e have certainly got enough, we just have to find a way of converting that into a result. I like us, I like the team, I like the connections and I like the determination. We go onto the next one. On Saturday, you could see that we were snatching at things towards the end. That comes with the anxiety of our situation. That is two games now where I have been really pleased in the way we have committed to the game and each other. We have got enough. We have to trust in each other. They trust in me; I trust in the players. We have got enough. They have given everything, we are getting closer as a team. I am liking the respect they have got for each other and how they are going about their work.
As much as it is disappointing, I am seeing real evidence that we have got enough. We have got ten games to go, and that is certainly enough to play how we played on Saturday and get the results that we need. It is result driven, but I have got to make sure I temper how I feel about the players. We have to pull together and commit to Tuesday’s game. I am under no illusions that it is about where we sit in the league table, but we are getting the performances. We have to believe in that. We are looking forward to Tuesday. We are ready for it. The players are very respectful of each other, and all want to do it for each other. That is a massive compliment that I can give, under the pressure they are in they are really sticking together. Let us bring on Tuesday. That is how we all feel.

We are delighted to welcome two mascots to The Lamex tonight for our clash with Northampton Town. In the Boro corner we are delighted to welcome 16-year-old Chad Worboys to give us some good luck. A pupil at Etonbury Academy, Chad lives in Stotfold and lists football and spy ninjas among his hobbies. His favourite footballer of all time is Jordan Henderson. Giving their backing to the opposition tonight is Ben Coombs who will be hoping the Cobblers have the better of the match tonight. We hope both have a great night with us and enjoy the chance to watch an exciting game of football.

ust under six years ago Stevenage hosted the Cobblers in a classic nail-biting clash. Bira Dembele led the team out in front of 3,378 fans all inside of the Lamex Stadium, although Dembele would not have been best pleased with the start his side had. Despite being in charge for the majority of the first half, Boro had failed to make that dominance effective, as they fell behind to a goal from Northampton Town’s centre-half, Zander Diamond. However, the setback didn’t dampen Stevenage’s spirit as they replied midway into the second half as Chris Whelpdale headed one back for the

home side, spelling the end to his goal drought that lasted since boxing day. The game was edging towards a draw until Stevenage ‘keeper Chris Day denied O’Toole’s late effort on goal, allowing Stevenage to turn defence into attack as Simon Walton declared himself as the super-sub to net a late winner for Boro. Tensions even boiled over following Walton’s late winner as referee Peter Bankes dismissed Northampton’s Cresswell in the dying moments, rubbing salt into Northampton Town’s wounds as they left the Lamex empty handed. BORO
HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 15 MARCH In our most recent looks back ‘on this day’, Martin Gittings’ name had been strangely absent; perhaps a point of the year in which the goals didn’t quite flow. If there ever was a seasonal dry patch in front of the sticks, we’re happy to report that it was very much done and dusted by the middle of this month – 15 March returning four goals overall. The first of those was in addition to a Chris Myers strike away to rivals Vauxhall Motors (Luton) in 1986 as Boro’ kept their eye on the Vauxhall Opel League Division 2 North title. It certainly wasn’t set in stone either, with the battle for top spot going down to the final day. As history shows, Boro’ would clinch the championship by a single point! 1997 was also proof that nothing is usually settled at this stage of the season, even though it seems like we’re at the business end of the campaign. Boro’ battled hard on 15 March 1997 to overcome a stubborn Hednesford Town
14
team by three goals to two. It was our fifth straight win in all competitions. Sadly, our title defence fatally faltered two weeks later at home to Macclesfield Town (shush!!). From the seven matches we’ve played on 15 March, we’ve only lost once. That was almost 30 years ago when Hayes claimed a 2-1 win at Broadhall Way. At least it wasn’t our worst-ever home defeat against Hayes – but that’s another story for another day. Our hope is that today is another positive entry into the ledger for this date in history. 1986 Vauxhall Motors (Luton) 0-2 Stevenage Borough, Vauxhall Opel League Division 2 North (Myers, Gittings) 1993 Stevenage Borough 1-2 Hayes, Diadora League Premier Division (Gittings) 1994 Bishop’s Stortford 0-4 Stevenage Borough, Herts Senior Cup SF (Gittings 2, Crawshaw, Stein) 1997 Stevenage Borough 3-2 Hednesford Town, GM Vauxhall Conference (Barrowcliff, Soloman, Crawshaw) 2003 Stevenage Borough 1-1 Woking, Nationwide Conference (Richards) 2011 Oxford United 1-2 Stevenage, npower League Two (Own Goal, Reid) 2014 Carlisle United 0-0 Stevenage, Sky Bet League One
Stevenage FC v Northampton Town FC
YOU AGAIN? NORTHAMPTON TOWN If ever Boro’ had a bogey team in modern times, Northampton Town are surely it. With one win in 14 outings, there’s quite a bit of ground for us to make up; the Cobblers boasting a formidable return of 11 victories from all our previous encounters – including a crushing 3-0 triumph at Sixfields back in mid-October. Our last three fixtures against them have all been on the road for one reason or another. The aborted 2019-20 season saw them record two 1-0 wins at our expense; the second of which was at their place on New Year’s Day 2020. And to complete the hattrick of away days for us, there was our unsuccessful Papa John’s Trophy exploits at Sixfields last term; Boro’ losing 4-2 on penalties, having held the then-League One side to a goalless draw otherwise. The above shows that, not only are we often on the wrong end of the result
www.stevenagefc.com
against the Cobblers, we don’t score goals against them either. You have to go back to February 2019 for the last time we breached their defence; a 2-1 defeat at the Lamex. And December 2018’s 1-1 draw at Sixfields is the last time we got anything out of our meetings with them. Our last win? Indeed, our only win? That came nearly seven years ago as Graham Westley’s men closed in on a playoff place. It’s an awful run of results that now covers eight subsequent meetings as the Cobblers came and went from the league above on more than one occasion? For us, there’s a lot of historical baggage to break down this evening…

ood Evening and good luck to Tis and his team in tonight’s EFL fixture. A few updates from our pathway programme here at Stevenage F.C: Our pathway programme has grown significantly over the past few months, currently accommodating around 350 boys of all ages and levels, from 7 all the way to 16 years of age. Our academy pyramid comprises 4 tiers, tier 1 (Elite Academy squads), tier 2 (Emerging Talent – shadow squads), tier 3 (Advanced Development Centre) & tier 4 (Development Centre), including our pre-academy U7 & U8s. Training sessions for our pathway squads (tier 2-4) take place at Shephalbury Sports Academy while we have recently launched an additional ‘pathway centre’ session at the Valley Sports Academy 3G pitch which offers players the opportunity to receive an additional training session during the week. All players currently registered in our pathway programme undertake our academy curriculum, trained by our UEFA and F.A accredited coaches as well as sport science, sport coaching and football studies graduates. Boys currently registered with us benefit from a fixtures programme. Our Advanced Development Centre squads were away at Brentford
during the February half term break while our Shadow and Advanced Development Centre squads will be travelling to Coventry in April for games. We offer a complete pathway programme for players to develop as people and footballers whilst providing players with opportunities to progress. We have had players who progressed and went on to trial and/or sign with our Elite Academy squads or progressed from the bottom tier all the way to our shadow squads. We closely monitor and evaluate all the players in our system and continuously provide players with opportunities, when and where appropriate. WOMEN
I
t was a celebration of all things related to women’s football this past weekend. With Stevenage FC, Stevenage FC Foundation and Stevenage FCW announcing a partnership with #HerGameToo, aiming to raise awareness of sexist abuse in football, the weekend just gone was dedicated to the cause. The Women’s team were invited to the game and took part in several activities across the day; including an Instagram takeover of the men’s team account led by Stef Paci and Kristal Clarke, a Q&A session before the game in The 76 Lounge with Stef Paci and Sophia Sharos and a lap of honour around The Lamex stadium at half-time. On behalf of Stevenage FCW we would like to thank Stevenage FC and all the ‘Boro fans for your support and the fantastic reception. It was down to business on Sunday as we hosted Norwich City at The Hertfordshire FA County Ground in Letchworth. In the reverse fixture we beat Norwich 2-1 as we looked to complete the double against them this season and push us up away from the relegation spaces. It was a cagey start with the visitors starting the brighter of the two sides, however, it was ‘Boro who opened the scoring inside 10 minutes. A long ball floated into the box was chased by Amy Makewell who beat the ‘keeper and flicked the ball over her head and into the empty net. A huge goal that eased some of the nervousness. The away side seemed to be spurred on
www.stevenagefc.com
by the goal against them as they looked to make inroads into the ‘Boro defence. Some stout defending from Vicky Neal and Chloe Gunn at the heart of the defence repelled the Canaries attacks, until the 18th minute when a long-range strike from 20 yards beat Tea Oldroyd in the ‘Boro goal and flew into the top corner 1-1. A lot was at stake for both sides with several flash points set up the game for an intriguing second half. The ‘Boro made a change in personnel and formation as they started the half brightly. However, within 5 minutes of the re-start, a penalty was given against ‘Boro but the Norwich player found Oldroyd in inspired form as she dived to her right and palmed the ball away.
The game became somewhat heated with words exchanged between both sets of the players and the official, however, just after the hour mark it was ‘Boro who took the lead again. Jodie Bellinger received the ball in the right channel and threaded an inch perfect through ball to Makewell who finished low into the back of the net; 2-1 to ‘Boro. The result seemed never in doubt as the goal gave ‘Boro renewed confidence and probably could have scored more. It was important 3 points in our fight to avoid relegation. Our next game is this Sunday in the Hertfordshire County Cup final. Kick-off is at 3pm at Hertfordshire FA County Ground – please do come down and support us. Come on you ‘Boro!

Whilst early season form was mixed, two spells of four successive wins just before Christmas has truly set our visitors up for the run-in and away form has them in eighth place in the ‘on the road‘ table with 24 points from their 18 games played away from Sixfields.
DID YOU KNOW? •A s Southern League champions in 1909 Northampton contested the Charity Shield Final against league champions Newcastle. The Cobblers lost 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in front of 7,000 fans. • Manager for this Northampton team of 1909 was none other than Herbert Chapman, credited with being the first major tactician of the modern age who went on to achieve success at the top level with Huddersfield and Arsenal. • From 1897 to 1994 Northampton played at the County Ground which they Shared with Northants County Cricket Club. The ground saw a highest football crowd of 24,523 v Fulham in 1966 and a record low of just 942 v Chester in 1984-85 season.

ONE TO WATCH Northampton Town signed Mansfield Town striker Danny Rose in October 2020. Rose began his career with his hometown club of Barnsley, where he made 18 appearances, the majority of which came in the Championship, before he joined Bury on loan. After a successful loan spell, he made the move to the Shakers permanent, scoring 20 times in a two year stay before moving to Mansfield Town in the summer of 2016. He found the net 44 times for the Stags as he started 113 games. His performances at Mansfield led to him becoming a fans favourite and he was named the players player of the season in 2017/18.
THE BOSS Cobblers manager Jon Brady should be no stranger to Boro fans as played for Stevenage in a career which also saw him win the Conference for Rushden and Diamonds in 2000-01 and play at Woking, Hereford and Chester. He joined the Cobblers as Under 16 coach in 2016 and was promoted to Under 18 coach in 2017. He became caretaker manager of the first team, supported by Ian Sampson and Marc Richards, in February 2021, before being appointed manager in May 2021.

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION
LATEST NEWS WELCOME I bid welcome and good evening to our friends from Northampton. I was so pleased to learn last week that a big step forward has been taken towards the completion of the East Stand at Sixfields. The Northampton Town Supporters’ Trust is working proactively with the West Northamptonshire Council and supporters’ representatives to consider potential ways in which desired outcomes can be enabled, supported and funded. I wish Andy Roberts and his colleagues on the Trust much success in their endeavours.
WANTED The Supporters’ Association has acquired a significant amount of matchday programmes, mostly donated by supporters or from house clearances etc. I’m looking for an archivist who has the wherewithal to accommodate the collection and to catalogue it for ease of reference. We often receive enquiries (from all over the world) about a matchday programme for a particular game - a service that only the SA can provide.
If you feel that you would like to take on this responsibility, then do let me know. Happy to deliver and help set up. Email me at Lloyd@SFCSA.co.uk or phone me on 07587 038422 for details.
GOLDEN SHARE The SA were pleased to receive the offer of a “Golden Share” from club chairman Phil Wallace. The Golden Share provides that, in future, any change to the Club badge, red and white home colours, Club name or location of the stadium must have the approval of the SA or it cannot go ahead. We believe that this initiative could lead to the SA representing more fans than it currently does and becoming closer to the Board, which will make fans more aware of our issues and developments.
MR MARVEL Mr Marvel is back by popular demand in The Broadhall Suite on Sunday 3rd April 2022. With doors open at 4.15pm for a 4.45pm start, youngsters can enjoy an afternoon full of magic, laughter and surprises with Mr Marvel. With balloon modelling, a Punch & Judy show and a live magic rabbit, Mr Marvel’s party is perfect for kids aged 4-10 years old. Tickets can be booked both from the stadium at our SA points on matchday, or from www.sfcsa.co.uk . LLOYD BRISCOE Chair - Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association
