I
would like to extend a warm Stevenage welcome to Keith, his backroom staff, players and everyone connected to Northampton Town Football Club. Saturday to Tuesday are always a quick turnaround but as soon as that final whistle went Saturday this whole group were ready for tonight. If it was up to us we would have played Saturday night! After a defeat you always want the chance to bounce back quickly and that is the opportunity we have tonight. I loved spells of our performance Saturday, but there were also spells I hated. We learnt some tough lessons the hard way with poor decisions costing us goals at key moments. But we know now the tweaks we need to make tonight to be far more effective in those moments as a team. We want to be an adaptable team where we can react to what the game needs tactically both individually and collectively to solve the problems the game gives us and ultimately find a way to win. The lessons we learnt on Saturday means we are now more prepared to achieve that objective. The Lamex Stadium on a Tuesday night is a special place. If this stadium could talk it would speak of famous wins over Newcastle United, Sheffield Wednesday and the like. To this day, Ashy, Joel and Revs reminisce of the special nights they have enjoyed under the lights here at our home. We need to make tonight another one of those special nights. Bring that huge emotional intensity and passion to produce a massive Stevenage performance. We need to see it in every aspect of our game and in the stands, every player fighting for each
loose ball as if it’s the last ball of their lives! Every supporter fully committed to this team standing together to create that special emotional connection between pitch and stands. They are the ingredients we need for a special, memorable night at the Lamex. In difficult moments it is so, so important to stick together, to show we are united behind these players and this club. I hope together we can share many more memories at this football club like the ones that are still spoken of now 20 years on. Let’s make tonight one to remember! www.stevenagefc.com | 5

warm welcome to the directors, officials, players and supporters of Northampton Town. I hope you enjoy your stay with us and have a safe journey home. Our game on Saturday was always going to be difficult. So much had happened off the pitch in the days leading up to the game and the new management team only had a couple of days on the grass with the players to get their ideas across. We played well but lost the game - but strangely enough that didn’t bother me too much. I saw signs I liked and this weekend we made further improvements to the management team by addressing the physio department and the sports science and fitness departments. The energy and enthusiasm at the training ground is fantastic and we can’t wait for better times. I don’t believe we’ve been bottom of any league since we found ourselves at the bottom of League One. Clearly, if you don’t win games that’s what will happen but I’m somehow calm. Perhaps because I can see the quality in the squad, how close we are to getting our senior players back to full fitness, the strength of the management team being built, the desire of everyone in the club to climb the table and put in a respectable shift. It doesn’t take much in this league to put back to back wins together and once you start that, it’s surprising how quickly you can climb the table. It makes promotion more of a challenge, but every team has a bad patch during the season - we had one last season and still finished one point outside the play offs due to 6 wins and a draw in our last 7 games. The point is nothing is over after 8 games. We have Stevenage FC v Northhampton Town FC
a league table to climb and an FA Cup to do well in. Hopefully it’s our turn for Lady Luck to sit on our shoulder from now on. I’m convinced that this group can repay the loyalty of our fans if we give them our support. Let’s not expect too much too soon, but let’s also never lose sight of the position we’re in and the fact that we need to do everything right for the rest of the season. Off the pitch we’re making good progress on the new North Stand and are on track for a ‘soft opening’ to season ticket holders for the Cambridge game. Enjoy the game and get behind the team tonight! www.stevenagefc.com | 7

ust five years ago and Boro were starting what was a year of rebuilding as they began in a season lower after relegation from Division One to Division Two, the first time they had suffered the drop since 1988. And it was a mixed start to say the least, two cup defeats added to three defeats, two wins and one draw in the league. At least this clash was to bring a positive outcome as Darius Charles blasted Boro to a 1-0 win in front of a crowd of 2,840.

ON THIS DAY Saturday September 17, 2005 Aldershot 2 Stevenage 2 On this day 14 years ago Boro were involved in a tight clash at the Recreation Ground in front of a crowd of 2,563. It was to be a battle which was to sum up their season as goals from Justin Gregory and Anthony Elding weren’t quite enough for the three points in a campaign where Boro were just to miss out on the play-offs, a last day no-show at Forest Green costing Graham Westley his job - for the time being. Boro also hit more headlines in the FA Cup with a victory at Paul Gascoigne’s Kettering before finger pointing fun with Northampton. Information kindly supplied by www.boroguide.co.uk

ontinuing the theme of trying to give an overview of all areas of the Academy we switch back to the U18s and how they are shaping up in the EFL Games Programme. With Alex moving up to the 1st team, the week has been different for the boys as they have all experienced for the first time in their professional lives, a meaningful change in their day to day activity. For them they will see their U18 coach move up to the 1st team and as we discussed with them on the Monday - how does that change affect them? During Alex & Ronnie’s first few months at the helm have they done enough to be in coaches’ minds? Have they performed consistently well over this time, on and off the pitch, to earn that all important trust? These questions may have come really early for some players, probably something they didn’t think they would need to consider in September however that’s where they are and each player knows how they have performed and what they need to do to become the next Academy garduate earning a professional contract. Cetainly Alex and Ronnie beat the drum every day about professionalism, standards, wanting to be the best etc and already, just a few months in, the Scholars are experiencing how Stevenage FC v Northhampton Town FC
important these words are. It’s been a real lesson for the young boys and their reaction to the news this week has been very good. We met as a group Monday morning and discussed what they have learnt from the past few months and where they feel they need to be as an individual and a group over the next few months. The training week was very good and really intense and that filtered through into a weekend win over MK Dons. Watching the game I was really impressed with the athleticism of the side and how players were prepared to work for each other. It was good to see Jack Smith and Liam Smyth, as 2nd year scholars but already awarded professional contracts, play without egos and work tirelessly for the team and their mates. The development plan of scholars who become pro’s is always at the forefront of our minds within the Academy as they move between 1st team and Academy environments and is something, with the numbers we are now getting through as young professionals, that we are looking to improve season on season. Finally good luck to the players and staff tonight and enjoy the game everyone.

WOMEN STEVENAGE WOMEN 1 LEYTON ORIENT WFC 3 At the weekend we played Leyton Orient WFC, a fixture that has always been a tough one. The game started evenly and after 20 minutes we were forced to make our first change through an injury. Just five minutes later we were forced into our second substitution, this time our goalkeeper who was injured following a collision. With no goalkeeper on the bench an outfield player stepped in and this hindered our momentum and Leyton grabbed a fortunate goal just before the break. Our third and final change had to be made due to yet another injury, three subs all used in the first 45 minutes wasn’t ideal, but we had to stay in the game. The start of the second half saw us dominate for 20 minutes, just the only thing missing was a goal. As in football against the run of play Leyton got a second although this didn’t seem to affect our work rate, we just couldn’t find that right pass in the final third to get back into the game. Leyton were far more clinical than us and grabbed a third, although we managed to get one back late on as a consolation through Amy Makewell. The changes that were forced upon us and and not taking the chances was the difference. We go again next weekend against another very good side in Ipswich Town Women. They’re in good form so we will need to perform better to get something from the game. Stevenage FC v Northhampton Town FC

SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION
LATEST NEWS WELCOME A big, personal welcome to all Northampton’s fans and supporters who have ventured the 47 miles to our corner of Hertfordshire this evening. Like our own SA, Northampton have their own fans’ team too. Called the “Claret Shoemakers FC”, the team routinely play home and away fixtures with fans of the 1st team’s opposition on Saturday mornings. Rob Ellam’s their manager, and I would like to wish him and his team much luck for the rest of the season.
SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION TEAM The SA’s own team is managed by Boro’s kit-man, Keith Bell. Founded some 14 years ago, the team comprises Boro fanatics who fight for the club on Saturday mornings and sing songs in the terraces in the afternoon. Last season they were crowned South East Cup Champions - as depicted in the accompanying photograph. Thrashing Gillingham IFA 4-2 at the home of Heybridge Swifts, the SA’s team are very much a force to be reckoned with. Perhaps one of the most poignant features of the team is their annual charity football match in memory of exStevenage player, Mitchell Cole. The 7th consecutive event took place at the home of Arlesey FC in May, where five Stevenage FC v Northhampton Town FC
other teams (representing Carlisle, MK Dons, Cambridge United, Luton and the Cole family) competed in a mini-league arrangement. A fantastic time was had and £2,520 raised for Cardiomyopathy UK.
BORO BUS Our next away game is on Saturday September 21st when we travel to Forest Green Rovers. The cost is just £20 for members and £25 for nonmembers, departing The Lamex at 10:00am. For further information and to book your place on the bus, please contact John Carroll on 01438 814285 (after 6.00pm).

WELCOME
LATEST FORM‌ Northampton were handed a massive boost in their last game after beating promotion chasers Newport County 2-0 at the Sixfields Stadium and move up the table to 14th. Andy Williams got them off to a flying start inside five minutes and former Stevenage player Sam Hoskins wrapped up the match in the second half. Prior to that victory, the Cobblers had a mixed start their campaign. They kicked off the season with one win in their first four league games. They did however, beat another promotion chaser Swindon Town 1-0 away from home and their other victory came in the shape of a 3-1 success against Plymouth. SAM HOSKINS
TAYLOR CATTON takes a look at our opponents as we take on Northampton Town at The Lamex Stadium.
WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE OPPONENTS‌ The Cobblers, located in the East Midlands, have been bouncing about between Sky Bet League Two and the league above ever since the early 2000s. They were last competing in League One in 2017/18, but unfortunately for them, that season finished with relegation to League Two after finishing 22nd. On their return last season they ended the campaign in 15th place. 28 | www.stevenagefc.com

ANDY WILLIAMS
STAR MAN‌
Pictures: Pete Norton
Andy Williams, who plays as a striker, has started this season in hot form with four goals in seven games and looks to be the main focal point in the Northampton attack. The veteran striker has been vital in scoring crucial goals this season which included the winner against Swindon. The 33-year-old bagged 13 goals last season for the Cobblers in his debut season and has a wealth of experience playing in the Football League. Williams has scored over 100 goals for Hereford Town, Bristol Rovers, Yeovil Town, Swindon Town and Doncaster Rovers.
KEITH CURLE
THE GAFFER‌ Keith Curle was appointed as manager at The Sixfields Stadium in October last year after taking over from Dean Austin. The previous manager left the club fourth from bottom of League Two last season and Curle successfully guided them away from the drop. The former centre back enjoyed a successful playing career that hit the heights with England when he was called up to Euro 92 and played the opening game against Denmark. Curle went on to play for teams such as Manchester City, Wolves, Bristol City and Wimbledon.
