irstly, I would like to welcome everyone from Oldham Athletic and John Sheridan to this afternoon’s game at The Lamex. Shez is a friend of mine, he has gone in and got a brilliant reaction from Oldham, then it fell away a little bit. We are not going to be determined what Oldham do, our future in League Two will be determined by what our players do. We need everyone to be focused on what we do for the next eight games, one game at a time. We now come up against an Oldham side who have got a lot of good players and an experienced manager. We need a good crowd here. We need the people of Stevenage to turn up and appreciate what we are all fighting for and that is our football league status. We want to be in League Two, and I want that opportunity in the summer to build a side

that is capable of the top group. For now though, our only job is to stay up. Us beating Oldham does not mean we will be in League Two next season. Oldham coming here and winning does not for them either. It is an important game mentally in terms of where the points go. We know how tough it is going to be, I think it will be tougher than Exeter. There will be more passion, more endeavour, more fight. Within all that, we have got to remember to play. Today is not about me, it is about the football club. It is about our players. We need our supporters to back the boys. If we go behind, we go again. If we lose, we go again. We need people to get right behind us. Let’s get out there and have a good performance, let’s get three points, let’s be together. This town needs its football league status. Saturday it starts.

“THERE WILL BE MORE PASSION, MORE ENDEAVOUR, MORE FIGHT”

DOMINIC JORDAN

BEHIND THE SCENES THE INSIDE TRACK WITH STEVENAGE FC CEO DOMINIC JORDAN I am delighted to be joining Stevenage FC and looking forward to getting going, working with a young, dynamic and talented admin team to drive the club forward. Whilst the team finds itself in a challenging position on the field currently, hit by multiple injuries and a recent Covid outbreak (I’m writing these notes whilst self-isolating myself), things are looking tough. But, out of adversity can come positive change and we will now see what we are really made of. With a new manager and eight games to go, we have it all to play for and your support will be more vital than ever now! In fact, it will make all the difference, the lift that carries the team through. We all need to come together, the fans and the town, to cheer the lads on and help get them across the line, especially over the four remaining home games. As the incoming CEO, I am directly appealing for everyone to rally their family & friends to come down to The Lamex Stadium and make the difference over these four games, be the twelfth man and help ensure that Stevenage FC retain their football league status. I can see that many changes and advancements have taken place over the past ten years or so at the Club, and much has been achieved on & off the field of play. Sometimes people can get anxious or left behind when change occurs, and it is my intention to make sure we bring everyone with us as we move forward. Reconnecting with all areas of our supporter base, businesses, residents and wider community to work together with

transparency and communication to make you our fans proud of Stevenage FC. Proud of what we stand for, and proud about how we go about our business. Talking about being proud, it is fantastic and right to be celebrating the amazing work that the Club through the Foundation and over 100 volunteers did within the community with the Careline campaign. Supplying over 15,000 sandwiches to 120 addresses across Stevenage, delivering over 400 prescriptions and made over 500 outbound phone calls to residents who needed support during the pandemic. The Club, Foundation and everyone who volunteered should be extremely proud of what was achieved with this wonderful initiative. We are also delighted to welcome our Match Sponsors Baumac Engineering and Match Ball sponsors Advanced Workplace Associates for today’s game. We really appreciate your support of the Club, as we do from all our valued partners. The commercial team and I will be looking to work even closer with our family of companies in the future to ensure we are taking every possible opportunity to engage and add value wherever we can. On the pitch, it was fantastic to see the Women’s team win Herts FA County Cup final beating Colney Heath in a convincing 3-1 win. A great achievement as the Women’s team continues to go from strength to strength. Finally, I want to thank the fans for your continued support home and away. It really does make a difference and everyone at the Club appreciates it. Get behind the team and enjoy the game. #TogetherforStevenage #TogetherforBoro

DES

GALLAGHER

D

es Gallagher is here in the 76 Lounge today; a very welcome guest. If you think that the journey from Perth is a long one, he went on an even longer one with Stevenage Borough. He had a few spells with the club but he was the only member of the team that played Newcastle United in those epic FA Cup ties in 1998 who had played for Borough, and Paul Fairclough, in Diadora Div 2 North. His Boro debut came in August 1985 in a 2-1 win against Bishops Stortford. Dessie racked up nearly 400 outings for the club. He won three league titles 1985-6 Vauxhall Opel League Division Two North; 1993-94 Diadora League Premier; and the Vauxhall Conference in 1995-96 that ill-fated title triumph that saw Boro refused their rightful place in the Football League. He did at least get to face League opposition in the FA Cup. There were wins at Leyton Orient, Cambridge United and Swindon and heroic defeats at Birmingham (in which he starred) and eventually to Newcastle, though Boro fans still say we only lost up there 1-1 as goalline technology (or a linesman who could see properly) would have ruled out Alan Shearer’s first at St James’ Park. Ever genial Des was a hugely popular figure with his team-mates and it has

www.stevenagefc.com

nothing remotely to do with his brother owning a pub in Luton. He disputes just how many games he played for the club as he says the figures don’t include county cup matches. But he doesn’t dispute that Boro are his club, despite spells with Dunstable and North Perth. They say you have to be a bit mad to be a goalkeeper. Des will be remembered for a few madcap things, such as wearing his wife’s vest under his shirt, posing naked in the Sun with just a Miitre Size 5 to protect his modesty. Then there was the famous incident when he didn’t have a game one Bank Holiday and went to watch another, at Vauxhall Motors, was a little ‘tired and emotional’ and with the action a little dull, he stripped off and ran onto the pitch, halting play as he skipped down the wing, earning himself an eight-match FA ban. It certainly was never dull when Des was about. But let’s not forget, you don’t play 400 games for Paul Fairclough without being a very good goalkeeper. The huge roll-call of defenders who played in front of him will attest to that. Des features in Paul Fry’s forthcoming book, with many others, in Paul’s forthcoming book, ‘We only lost 1-1’, on the Newcastle Cup-ties, due out at the end of the year, If you have memories or photos you’d like to contribute for inclusion, email him at paulmarkfry@ gmail.com

ldham Athletic travelled to the Lamex Stadium as the Npower League One season approached its crunch point. Boro had fought their way into a play-off push; however, they were winless in their last five games and in serious danger of falling behind in the race for promotion. It proved to be a long and nervy night for the Stevenage faithful. The first half drew to a close with the main events of note being Oldham’s Zander Diamond who was forced off for a 19-year-old James Tarkowski, now at Burnley, as both sides’ finishing was off the pace with misplaced shots from the visitors and Boro’s Michael Bostwick. The game sparked into life towards the closing stages as Stevenage started to persist in attack, utilising their bench as Agyemang, Lascelles and Myrie-Williams all

entered the fray. It was to no avail however and looked like they would make it four ties in a row. However, there was a hero to be made from this game, as the 2,453 fans inside the Lamex were sent into delirium as defender Lawrie Wilson dived in and used his head to convert Darius Charles’ cross, the goal came in the first minute of injury time; leaving Dickov’s Oldham with little to no time to respond. The game finally relieved Stevenage fans of their poor run of form and changing the play-off script once again as Gary Smith’s men closed the gap to Notts County in sixth to just two points, and with two games in hand it proved that Stevenage still had everything to play for in the final 12 games of the 2011-2012 Npower League One season. BORO

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 02 APRIL Now then, would you believe it – it is exactly one year ago today that a rare Scott Cuthbert goal earned us victory at the expense of today’s guests. Of course, that was on away turf; a sunny Good Friday trip north to Boundary Park. It does, however, bode well that we know how to get the measure of them on this particular date in history. That said, much has changed since then – notably our manager (twice). And we can say the same for the Latics! Elsewhere on this date, Boro’ have fared well in recent years. Since joining the Football League, we’ve won four from four on this date – including a deeply satisfying victory at Kenilworth Road and a healthy thrashing of Barnet. Speaking of that Barnet match, it’s one of three times over the years that we’ve hit four goals on 2 April. In 2001, we made light work of Hednesford Town at home, while Aylesbury United were comfortably seen off seven years before; Boro’ striding towards the Diadora League Premier Division title and, with it, promotion to the Conference. That’s not to say that we haven’t hit a couple of bum notes on this date. Hereford United’s tight win at our place was one chapter in our 2004-5 ding dong with the Bulls that culminated in our playoff success at Edgar Street. Meanwhile, two goals for Graham Cox

18

couldn’t stop us falling to defeat against Buckingham Town in 1983. A quick note on our goal in the 1-1 draw with Billericay Town in 1988. Boro’ wouldn’t score again that season until the final day – seven games later. In picking up one point in the following six (a 0-0 draw), we slid towards relegation from Vauxhall Opel League Division One. Let’s hope a similar fate doesn’t befall us this season. 1983 Stevenage Borough 2-3 Buckingham Town*, United Counties League Premier Division (Cox 2) 1985 Barton Rovers 1-2 Stevenage Borough, Servowarm League Division Two North (Shadbolt, Armsby) 1988 Billericay Town 1-1 Stevenage Borough, Vauxhall Opel League Division One (Cox) 1994 Stevenage Borough 4-0 Aylesbury United, Diadora League Premier Division (Clark, Crawshaw, Stein, OG) 2001 Stevenage Borough 4-1 Hednesford Town, Nationwide Conference (Armstrong, Morgan, Hamsher, Walters) 2005 Stevenage Borough 0-1 Hereford United, Nationwide Conference 2011 Stevenage 2-1 Bradford City, npower League Two (Mousinho, Charles)

YOU AGAIN? OLDHAM ATHLETIC Today’s meeting has all the hallmarks of a classic relegation six-pointer. For Boro’, the prospect of defeat is simply too grim to bear as we face off against our fellow relegation candidates. Do our past fixtures against the Latics give us any encouragement? In short – yes, but only just; Boro’ winning five of our 12 encounters to date, with our guests on four. Obviously, our 3-0 reverse at Boundary Park earlier this term is not a result we’d choose to look back fondly on. It also ended a run of five games without defeat against the Latics – and three games without conceding. One of those was a 3-0 home win on 19 September 2020, which was our first home win for some

www.stevenagefc.com

considerable time. Prior to that, our solitary meeting during the 2019-20 season saw us draw 0-0 at the Lamex. The season before that? A four-point haul, starting with a 3-2 home win in November 2018. We’d twice trailed during that particular game before Danny Newton came off the bench to head home a late winner. It was a win that put us into the top seven too. Oh for those days to return. Going back through the archives, Boro’ have lost just once to the Latics at the Lamex. You may well remember it too; a rollercoaster 4-3 defeat on the opening day of the 2013-4 League One season. It was a campaign that would ultimately end in relegation. You’d have to worry about history repeating itself if our guests score a second-ever Lamex win today.

ACADEMY

T

he next month is huge for all of us and everyone at the academy is doing our upmost to continue to support the club in any way possible. I wish the gaffer and his team the very best in today’s fixture v Oldham. I wanted to start with some real positives to come out of the academy, our U16’s age group, who has been led by Phase Lead Jimmy Martin for the last few years won their respected division for the first time in the academy history. Jimmy and Mark Hughes have worked tirelessly hard to ensure not only do the U16’s strive for excellence on the pitch, but they have also provided Chris at the U18’s with several young players recently. Although winning is not everything, it shows the great strides in the progress we are making in the younger phases. Well done to everyone who has been involved. Further to the progression on the pitch, Chris Agutter and Ronnie Henry have ensured we maintained our long-term development plans by providing those youngsters in the Youth Development Phase the opportunity to play in the U18’s. With plenty of planning and communication between the phases, we have identified several young

players and really aimed to push them to their max. Recently the U18’s has had a minimum of x2 U15’s and rest fulfilled with U16’s and U17’s. Merit League 1 is also difficult as we change our stance and go young, but we believe it has its long-term benefits. The last few weeks have been especially tough as the club made it decisions on who will be offered junior professional contracts and naturally, its never nice saying no to anyone, but our second years have been extremely mature and maintained their professionalism on and off the pitch. Many are out on loan and doing well whilst some are off to other clubs to earn themselves contracts at other clubs. One thing for sure is, we will do our upmost to ensure we do our best for them as they depart us. It goes without saying, thank you to all those that will be leaving, and we wish them all the very best for the future. We have offered a junior professional contract, and this will be announced in due course. Good luck to everyone today and let’s get the behind the lads, the Lamex is a lively place when it’s rocking, so come on! JORDEN GIBSON Academy Operations Manager

STEVENAGE FC

WOMEN STEVENAGE FCW – FOUR TIMES COUNTY CUP CHAMPIONS Having made the Hertfordshire County Cup final for the seventh time in a row stretching back to 2015, Stevenage FCW ensured their name was etched on to the trophy for the fourth time courtesy of a 3-1 win against Colney Heath Ladies FC. A warm sunny spring day set the stage at the Hertfordshire FA County Ground as cup final fever hit ‘Boro fans! With the ground packed and The Boro fans in attendance vocal and backing our girls, the game kicked off following the prematch formalities of being introduced to former England Lionesses and Arsenal Women’s footballer, Sian Williams. It was the visitors who started the game brightly with keeper, Te’a Oldroyd’s palm’s being stung in the early minutes of the game. Boro soon grew into the game with Amy Makewell being denied getting her shot away. It was a relatively even opening to the first half with both sides trading blows; first through Holly Greenwood, whose fierce shot was well saved by the Colney keeper and more good work by Oldroyd in the ‘Boro goal as she denied Colney Heath with a low save. It wasn’t long before The Boro opened the scoring through Emily Schofield on the 24th minute. A trademark precise through ball by Shianne Swarres in the middle of the pitch found Jodie Bellinger out wide on the left; Bellinger’s perfectly weighted cross found Schofield free in the area to sweep home for her first goal of the season. Cue celebrations and a roar of approval from ‘Boro fans. Much of the early exchanges fizzled out as Boro looked to establish their dominance in the game as the first half drew to a close. The second half started in similar fashion to the first with chances galore. The Boro, spurred on by their dominance

www.stevenagefc.com

began to create chance after chance and it was a matter of when and not if. It took until the 75th minute for ‘Boro to extend their lead through a rocket from full-back Kate French. A great ball played in from Dionne Manning to Frenchie allowed her to drive at the Colney Heath goal and unleash an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net, which sparked wild celebrations on the pitch and in the dugout. A couple of minutes later, midfielder, Ailish Straver ensured the game was put to bed as she looked to rival Frenchie for the Boro goal of the season contest. Following good close control by Amy Makewell, which released the ball to Straver who steadied herself and let fly with a pile-driver from all of 25 yards that beat the Colney keeper as the ball flew into the roof of the net. 3-0 to the ‘Boro and one hand on the trophy. There was still time for a consolation goal for Colney Heath as a well struck free-kick finally beat Oldroyd but the ‘Boro ran out comfortable 3-1 winners and lifted the County Cup for the fourth time. Attention now turns to the league with three huge games left to play to ensure we avoid relegation. Come on you Boro!!

Oldham’s 2-0 win at home to Orient on Tuesday, a success which snapped a four game losing streak, now puts Boro in the bottom two on goal difference but with a game in hand. With a run-in which includes Port Vale, Forest Green and Tranmere (away) and Northampton, Salford and Crawley (home) the Latics know a win is essential today - the stage really is set.

DID YOU KNOW?

•O ur visitors trace their founding back to 1895 when the team was first known as Pine Villa, partly named for a mill which stood nearby and also because Aston Villa were successful at the time and made the name Villa popular. •K en Bates, now 90 years of age, began his life in football as chairman of Oldham in the 1960s, he went on to famously buy Chelsea for £1. •O wls and Latics? The owl is on the club logo as it the crest for the town with the motto Sapere Aude (Dare to be wise). The term latic is simply a short form of Athletic.

ONE TO WATCH

THE BOSS John Sheridan is head coach at Oldham and has been in the role since January of this year when the club were sitting at the bottom of the league. This is his fourth spell with the Latics, a club with whom he finished his playing career in 2004 after 144 appearances over a six year spell. Sheridan made more than 600 league appearances with clubs such as Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, Birmingham and Bolton and played 34 times for the Republic of Ireland. His managerial career has seen him also take charge of clubs such as Chesterfield, Plymouth, Newport, Notts County, Carlisle and Fleetwood.

Callum Whelan joined Latics on a two-year deal in August 2020 after a successful trial with the club. He began his career at Manchester United, after his early days in his hometown of Barnsley. Being one of three players shortlisted for the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award in 2017, he spent a total of 12 years at United and during his time at Old Trafford had a brief spell out on loan at Port Vale. Whelan left the Red Devils and was quickly snapped up by Watford in August 2019. Making his professional debut in the fourth round of the FA Cup in January 2020, he came on as a substitute in a 3-3 draw with Tranmere Rovers at Vicarage Road, and also started in the replay a few weeks later. Before his release, the central midfielder spent a considerable amount of time with the first-team throughout last season, gaining valuable experience while also playing for the Under 23s.

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION

LATEST NEWS WELCOME

BON ACCORD

The ‘Latics’ are in town, for what will be a fiercely contested game for both teams. I bid welcome to Jim Booth who is the chair of the Oldham Athletic Supporters Foundation (OASF). Jim and his committee have had much to cope with at Oldham in recent years, and if I get to meet him I shall certainly stand him a pint. It’s people like Jim and his team that really are the heart and soul of football at our level. I confess too, to be excited at the notion of John Sheridan coming to the Lamex. His winning goal for Sheffield Wednesday against Manchester United in the 1991 League Cup final was an unforgettable “I was there” moment, for which, reader, I have to report, I was there!

My routine at home games on Saturday afternoons is to frequent the Broadhall Suite to peruse the ales and mix with good company for an hour or so before kick-off.

FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION (FSA) Boris Johnson has given his backing to an independent regulator for football, ahead of his own Government’s official response to the Fan-led Review of Football Governance. Last November’s review was welcomed by sports minister Nigel Huddleston and a formal response from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is expected in the next few weeks. During parliament on March 23rd, the Prime Minister said: “Yes, we should have an independent regulator for football” in response to a question from Graham Stringer MP. One of the key recommendations of the Fan-Led Review is to embed supporter organisations at the heart of all clubs. In recognition of this, our opposition today (Oldham) have a fans representative on their club board and on March 24th, Scunthorpe United announced the same.

Typical of such an occasion was our recent home game against Newport. The accompanying photograph depicts both Exiles and Boro fans enjoying a beer or three together. Camaraderie at it’s best. What a great way to spend an afternoon.
