ood evening and welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Oldham Athletic. This Tuesday evening against Oldham should be an interesting game, to say the least….. Not only are the 3 points crucial to both teams, but it pits our old manager Dino Maamria against our new manager Graham Westley for the first time. As most will know Dino worked as an assistant to GW for several years before he went out on his own, so this should be an interesting evening. Added to that, Dino was released from his managerial duties here at Boro and swiftly took up a similar position at Oldham. If that wasn’t enough, we have the added ingredient of Dino accusing our assistant manager of racism after he’d left and taking that to a FA hearing, the results of which we’ll know shortly. So there’s plenty of spice off the field for this one…. On the field I doubt the 2 teams will be interested in any of that and will conduct themselves properly, both Stevenage FC v Oldham Athletic
trying to win the 3 points on offer. We have 20 games to go and this January window is the first chance we’ve had to add and subtract from the squad put together at the start of the season by Dino. We’ve bought Jake Cassidy from Maidenhead for a 5 figure fee as GW likes an established number 9 and he’ll be a welcome addition to us up top. I don’t expect our signings to stop there – we are close to a couple of others but need to be careful at this stage of the season that we get the mix right – we need lads that are ready for a battle. We’ve looked good value in a lot of our games recently and we just need to start finding the back of the net. If we’d taken our chances on Saturday against Port Vale the game would have long been over by the time they were awarded a late pen. We’ll keep on battling and we hope you’ll keep on supporting our lads. We always focus on the next game, one game at a time. It’s about time we went on a nice little run of wins and there’d be no better time to start than tonight. Enjoy the game! www.stevenagefc.com | 7

In front of a crowd of 3,306 the hosts chalked up another success, goals from Simon Walton and Tom Pett seeing Boro home while subs brought on on the day included Charlie Lee and Calvin Zola

ood evening and welcome to the Lamex for tonight’s eagerly anticipated fixture with Oldham Athletic. Since I last wrote in the programme, an awful lot has happened within the Youth Development Phase here at Stevenage FC and we are really excited about the future of not only the Academy but in how we hope to see our young players progress in the future to represent the first team in seasons to come. We have once again added a number of fixtures to our games programme in order to stretch and challenge the talented players under our care, going to Category 1 and 2 Academies such as Spurs, West Ham, Norwich, Watford and Colchester. In matching up with these clubs, we are able to not only see where our individual players are against their Premier League and Championship counterparts, but how our teams can compete on a tactical level, something we see real value in. We are delighted to be able to share with you the names of the U16 players who have each earned their apprenticeships with the football club, a total of 11 players from this age group, the most we have ever offered by a margin of 5! Testament to the hard work of not only the players themselves but to the coaching, medical, recruitment and administrative staff who all play a part in developing our Academy players, as well as each of the boy’s families for their unwavering support. Congratulations to; Alex Aitken, Kwadwo Bugyei-Kyei, George Edgeworth, Max Granville, Cian Halpin, Finlay Johnson, Morgan Mahoney, Obi Onyeagwara, Ben Siggers, Teddy Stevenage FC v Oldham Athletic
Stevenson and Jack Wilson. We look forward to seeing how far this group can go and believe that many of them will grace our hallowed turf and beyond in the coming seasons. The second half of the season is well underway and upon reading this we will have taken part in and hosted various EFL and Premier League festivals since the Christmas break, which provides a competitive environment for our players to practice. Coming up shortly will be a trip to West Ham for our U13’s, Floodlit Cup action for our U15’s and the culmination of the ‘league’ fixtures for our U16’s. Enjoy the game, come on Boro!

FOUNDATION
A
fter a successful summer we were delighted to announce another three years of delivery of the NCS programme at the Foundation. Since 2012 we have been delivering this programme to over a thousand young people in Stevenage and Welwyn. NCS itself is a four-week summer experience taking away 15 to 17-year olds to gain new life skills. The programme has three key phases all with different opportunities and challenges for the young people. Within this it includes a week’s adventurous activities to develop team working skills. A week’s residential at University Halls to promote independent living and life skills. Lastly two weeks based in Stevenage providing an opportunity to give back to Stevenage’s community. Two weeks away from the parents always seems a popular attraction from the young people and parents alike! Last year 204 young people came away with us on NCS on three different programme dates. New for the year just gone was a knife awareness workshop run by Paul Hannaford. Paul shares his real-life story involving the dangerous consequences of drugs, gang culture and knife crime. I can safely say Paul made a huge impact to all young

people watching and moving a few staff members to tears. In addition to this, mental health workshops from Tic Box productions, plus a You vs Trains provided by National Rail and the EFL Trust. On our NCS programme we strongly believe it’s important to educate Young People on issues not directly involved in their curricular education to expand their awareness. The programme continues to make a difference to the local area with our Social Action Projects produced by our groups. We are very proud that we broke our fundraising record by one of our groups. A sponsored fancy dressed treadmill run in aid of the Keech House Hospice saw each member of the group running 2344m to represent the current number of patients. This year 55% of staff working on the programme were returning NCS graduates, providing exit routes and youth employment in the Stevenage area. Currently, we are looking to expand our NCS office team with the addition of NCS Business Administration Apprentice (Full Job Description online). This year we are looking to take 150 young people on the NCS programme over the Stevenage area. If you or anyone you know are interested in the NCS programme, please contact us at the Foundation and we’ll be happy to assist via ncs@stevenagefc.com www.stevenagefc.com | 27

n this programme we take a look at two players for Stevenage FC Women who we believe will make a big name for themselves in 2020.
Name: ASHLEIGH DEACON Nickname: BABS DOB: 30/01/1996 Occupation: RETAIL Preferred playing position: RIGHT WING Season Apps: 15 Joined Stevenage FC Women: 2017 Previous Clubs: ARSENAL, WATFORD, CAMBRIDGE Babs is a huge character at Stevenage FC Women. This is not just in her personality but also in her footballing ability. The biggest attribute of Babs is her dribbling skills and quick pace, she loves the ball at her feet and taking players on. This season I’ve lost count of the amount of assists she has, another part of her game she’s been working extremely hard on in training. One part of her game I know she wants to improve on is her goal scoring which I’m sure entering into the new year is something she can achieve.
Stevenage FC v Oldham Athletic
Name: ERIN POPE Nickname: POPEY DOB: 25/04/1996 Occupation: ADMIN FRAMING COMPANY Preferred playing position: N0.10 Season Apps: 13 Joined Stevenage FC Women: 2018 Previous Clubs: QPR Erin is a player with an abundance of footballing talent. Since joining Stevenage FC Women Erin has had to be versatile, filling in when injuries have occurred, having to play in positions she probably wouldn’t have chosen. With this it’s a huge credit to her that she would put in performance after performance. This season we have tried to play her more in her preferred position of no.10 and she is has found an extra confidence. Injuries have slightly hampered Erin this season but hopefully 2020 can be her year to develop even more.

SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION
LATEST NEWS WELCOME Tonight, it is my pleasure to welcome the fans and supporters of Oldham Athletic. Graham Westley and Dino Maamria on opposing benches – interesting scenario! My personal felicitations to Elaine Ganderton who is the chair of “Trust Oldham”, doing seriously good work at Boundary Park. It’s great to see you all here this evening. I hope you all have a pleasant time in Stevenage and a safe journey home after the match.
FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS FEDERATION “In an increasingly fragmented society, our professional football clubs stand out as beacons of identity and community, reaching beyond their obvious function as sporting businesses, to have family, social and outreach roles. They are institutions in our national life” These are the words of Roger Titford of Reading Supporters’ Trust in a clarion call to preserve the history of our clubs. Roger goes on to suggest that most lower League football clubs don’t have the resources to maintain and curate artefacts (photo’s, trophies, fans scrapbooks etc.,) but that the great bulk of material is held by “a very few private
Stevenage FC v Oldham Athletic
collectors – all male, all 50+ or older”. In my experience, I have to concur. Roger is endeavouring to engage with all club historians in the EFL (and beyond) to create a dialogue via the magazine “When Saturday Comes”. I will ensure Stevenage is involved, and if you should have anything to contribute (or donate) then please let me know. Meanwhile, click here to read Roger’s full article.

of rivals Oldham County. The Latics as they are known won the Lancashire Combination in 1906-07 and used this as a springboard to enter the Football League. Swift progress saw them win promotion out of the Second Division in 1909-10 and in 1914-15 they were second in the First Division. Always keen to make history, in more modern times Oldham are noted for being founder members of the Premier League in 1992 although they were relegated two years later. They also reached the League Cup final in 1990.

Oldham find themselves nine points ahead of the Boro but they have had a similarly tough season with an inability to get any real run of form together. Indeed in their last four games the Latics have taken just one point from a possible 12, that a 1-1 draw on Saturday with Macclesfield. Prior to that they had lost away to Cheltenham and at home

to Scunthorpe and Salford, conceding nine goals in those three defeats. Oldham are out of all the cups, losing 3-2 to Blackburn in the EFL Cup while in the FA Cup they followed a 2-1 win at Gateshead with a 1-0 exit at home to Burton.
STAR MAN‌ David Wheater. The Redcar born centre back, now 32, signed in August 2019 for Oldham and has appeared 23 times this season. With 140 appearances for Middlesbrough and 212 for Bolton, Wheater brings a wealth of experience befitting a player who has won England honours at U-16, U-17, U-18, U-19 and U-21 level. Having played in six Premier League campaigns in his career, 6ft 5in Wheater has proved a key player this season.
DINO MAAMRIA
THE GAFFER‌ Dino Maamria truly is no stranger to Boro. The Tunisian-born head coach of Oldham started his playing career with AS Marsa in his home country before moving to Burnley, Glentoran of the IFA and then joining Doncaster, then in the Conference. Maamria first came to Boro in February 2003 and although he left after 10 appearances, he retuned seven months later for a spell lasting three years. His managerial career has seen spells at Northwich, Southport and Nuneaton before he joined Boro in March 2018. Maamria took over at Oldham in September 2019.
