THE CHAIRMAN

G

PHIL WALLACE

ood afternoon and welcome to the players, and officials of Oldham Athletic. Well, what a season that was! I’m not going to spend too much time looking backwards, but suffice to say that I’ve personally never worked so hard. Keeping our Club in the Football League as events unfolded over several months was a monstrous task and we have been extremely fortunate in that the EFL appeal against the sanction given to Macclesfield was upheld and points deducted this season, as we believe they should have been. We will take that of course, but we also recognise that relegation from the EFL this year for any club on PPG was cruel. Every club has fans that love their club and you always feel for them. From our side, we’ve had the biggest shock of our lives. We started off 2019/20 with the biggest budget – and probably the most players - we’d ever given to a manager in League Two. What we learnt as the season went on is that winning is less to do with the size of the budget and a lot to do with the character of the players. We tried hard to put that right in January, but it’s difficult to stop a ship from sinking when it’s already half way there and it tends to pull everyone down with it. However, that experience sent us down a new road. Alex Revell showed his determination early on to give us what we wanted – a new beginning, a new approach and a new culture. First we needed to add an experienced head to help Alex and provide the know how to win. That came with Lennie Lawrence and over 1,000 games as a manager. A massive step forwards for us and welcome Lennie! Keeping a fresh, rejuvenated Mark Sampson to assist Revs was another plus and a new squad was what we all wanted to see!

www.stevenagefc.com

Since July we’ve set about signing players that share our vision, our ambition and our culture. Alex has taken ownership of the new culture and drives it home at every opportunity, in every detail despite the financial restrictions we’ve got to face. It’s very early days of course but I feel uplifted by what I’m seeing at our Club. We really could be at the beginning of something very good. Only time will tell, but every ounce of effort all of us can provide – directors, management, staff and players – will be put on the line in an effort to regain our pride. We put our fans through a season of heartache, anger and frustration game after game and I apologise to each and every one for that. We’ve all learnt something and we can all move forwards together now. A new era, a new beginning. Welcome to all the new players - get us back to what we love best – watching our Club win football matches and entertaining us!

or some Boro fans the clashes against Newcastle, Sheffield Wednesday and Spurs are among the most memorable games seen at home. For a few though, this one, now 25 years ago, was a turning point in the history of this club. Cloughie had already built a team good enough to reach the Conference and in their debut season Boro had finished a creditable fifth. After a good early start in the 1995-96 season, Boro had slipped to 11th when old foes Kettering came to town for one of the Monday night classics. And what a night it was! Just look at the

team Boro fielded, a starting 11 crammed with classic names simply tore into the Poppies from the outset. It was a hammering and it showed Boro were not just at home in the Conference, but they had the ability to go on and reach the Football League. The rest of the season’s story is long, arduous, and oft told, but for now let’s reflect on the goals scored by Smith, Barrowcliff, Crawshaw, Browne and Marshall and a win which paved the way for the club we have today. The crowd of 2,033 was also the biggest until December 2 when guess who, Macclesfield, came to town... DARREN ISTED

ACADEMY

ike all academies across the country the start of pre season was a unique experience for players and staff alike. I have to say though the pre season was superbly managed by Jorden, David Bass and the entire academy staff, and the young scholars enjoyed an excellent pre season period with plenty of training, inductions and games to set them on their way. It was great to see young Samuel Tinubu, just 15 years of age making his 1st team debut v Luton and then Jack Smith made his first EFL start on Saturday v Barrow. We do feel we are getting better each season, the quality of player coming through improves each year and hopefully we can continue this trend. Our first two competitive fixtures for the U18s saw a 2-2 draw against Cambridge Utd courtesy of a Yasin Arai penalty and a delicate chip by Cain Keller. Tuesday saw us entertain Luton in the League Cup and run out 2-1 winners in a really

high quality match. An opening goal by Alfie Williams was quickly followed by an early goal of the season contender by Max Granville. A special mention must go to goalkeeper Timmy Smith who was excellent throughout the game. ROBBIE O’KEEFE – Academy Manager

FOUNDATION GIRLS’ PROGRAMME RETURNS Last week saw the return of our hugely successful Girls Development Centre. After two successful trial dates in August, we welcomed a massive 85 girls across 5 different age groups and a goalkeeper specific session. Our Development Centre has doubled in size since first starting in October 2018 and we are really excited about the upcoming season as the standard of girls we have within our Development Centre is excellent and the progression the girls are showing is evident.

emphasis on enjoyment, development, and performance. The centre will cause no conflict with players’ existing grassroots commitments and act as an additional session to develop players technical abilities, increase confidence and make friends in a safe and professional environment. The Stevenage Girls’ Football Centre runs on a Wednesday from 6-7pm at Shepalbury Sports Academy (SG2 8NP) and the Letchworth Girls’ Football Centre will run on a Tuesday from 5-6pm at Hertfordshire FA Community Football Centre (SG6 2EN). If you are interested in attending these sessions, please email lukew@stevenagefc.com LUKE WILKINS - Primary Education Officer

The sessions are coached by FA and UEFA qualified coaches and the centre is tailored to give players the best opportunity to progress technically as a footballer and to help them develop socially and psychologically. We are still looking for players in our U10, U14 and U16 age group, if you have a daughter in this age group and you would like them to trial please email lukew@stevenagefc.com In other news we are delighted to announce that our Girls Football Centre in Stevenage has returned, and we are opening a brand-new centre in Letchworth. Our Girls Football Centres are a direct pathway into our Development Centre and the sessions are player centred, revolving around technical and game-based scenarios with the

ith last season ending so abruptly it seemed an age for us to be able to get back to football, taking small steps to start with following the guidelines and procedures to get to now our first game of the new season tomorrow away to Actonians. Since being back and getting involved with pre season there seems to be a real positive energy, atmosphere and feeling in the club, which I hope will stay throughout the season. We were way off where we wanted to be last term so my main objective was to start from scratch and create a new culture and belief that would hopefully make an improvement on last season. We’ve managed to get a few friendlies under our belts, not as many as I would’ve liked but for one reason or another things

didn’t materialise in getting minutes. The games we did manage to play gave me a chance to look at some of our younger players coming through our development squad and some trialists, which was really pleasing to see. We have made some really positive signings with a good mix of young players and experience, but we hope to possibly get another 1 or 2 across the line before the first game. CLUB MATTERS It has been a turbulent time for Oldham who finished 19th in the curtailed season, but there were hopes a big name at the helm would provide some stability when former Boro boss Dino Maamria made his exit, to be replaced by Harry Kewell. There has also been a change in the running of the club, with former Bury CEO Karl Evans taking the same role, replacing Natalie Atkinson. There have already been a number of

26

changes among the playing staff, in have come Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Conor McAleny, Carl Piergianni, Sido Jombati and Ian Lawlor. But the revolving door has also seen some of the playing staff depart with Chris McCann, Zak Mills, Gevaro Nepomuceno, Jamie Stott and Desire Segbe-Azankpo all going. The 2020-21 campaign began well enough two weeks ago with a 3-0 home Carabao Cup win over Carlisle. Goals from new signings Ben Garrity, Bobby Grant and Conor McAleny sent the hosts on their way. That promise has been replaced by two straight defeats. On Saturday Oldham fell to an opening day EFL defeat at home to Leyton Orient, with the boss calling for better finishing after the home side were punished by an 89th minute winner from Danny Johnson for the Os. On Tuesday the Latics missed out on a Carabao Cup clash with Newcastle as they were edged out 1-0 at Morecambe in the second round. This time it was a first-half strike which did the damage and despite

Stevenage FC v Oldham Athletic

a late fightback, the visitors made their exit. Ahead of the clash with Boro Kewell said: “This is going to take time, we’re changing the whole philosophy of what they’re used to playing. No-one’s guaranteed a Harry Kewell

start, you have to perform every day in training and that’s what they’re getting used to.”

THE BOSS Harry Kewell. The 41-year-old Aussie has enjoyed a remarkable career in football, playing at the highest level of the game for club and country and also breaking a number of records along the way. On the club front Kewell lists Leeds, Liverpool and Galatasary among clubs played for, winning League Cup, FA Cup and Champions League honours. Kewell has also represented and scored for the Socceroos in a World Cup finals, earning 58 caps. He started his managerial career as the U21 coach at Watford in 2015 before becoming the first Australian to coach a professional side when he took the helm at Crawley in 2017. After guiding them to 14th with an attractive brand of football, Kewell made a surprise switch to bottom club Notts County the following season, but this stint lasted just 14 games before he was sacked. Kewell took the helm at Oldham on August 1 this year.

Zak Dearnley

Zak Dearnley. Keep an eye out for this 21-year-old who has already made three starts for the Latics this season. The forward began his career at Manchester United and although he didn’t make a start for the Reds he was on the bench in May 2017 and trained with the senior squad in the build up to a Champions league clash with Juventus under boss Jose Mourinho. Dearnley really made his mark when he netted four times in just eight games when he returned to Boundary Park for the last campaign after an earlier loan spell. During the summer of 2020 Dearnley committed to the Latics signing a two-year deal.

LATEST NEWS

W

ell we’re back in action but maybe not in quite the same way as earlier in the year. Thanks to the EFL we can look forward to a new L2 season after a delayed start. In the unprecedented last six months it’s been great to feel part of a community club that played a part in helping folk through lockdown. Stevenage FC rightly got the national coverage this deserved and Boro v Coronavirus on the fixture board is an image we’ll all long remember. The SA remains very much alive but obviously unable to perform its normal functions on match days. We really don’t know how long it will be till fans can attend matches once again but even then, social distancing will make the SA’s interaction with fans difficult. As you might expect with the uncertainty membership numbers are currently lower than last season although pleasingly, we have attracted 23 new members. The SA is grateful to the 241 who have joined already. But if you are one of the 300 who haven’t please consider renewing if you can. The majority of the monies that the SA raises each year is transferred to the Club – today’s photo is one from March,

www.stevenagefc.com

just before lockdown, when Mervyn and myself presented Alex with a £10k cheque. Obviously because of social distancing, 50/50 ticket sales will not be possible for some time and that is by far the greatest revenue earner for the SA. We are considering what else we might do in the meantime to raise needed revenue for the Club. What we also know is that we can’t hold our usual AGM. Our constitution says we must hold one before October 31st each year. So, this year we will be communicating with members electronically where possible, distributing officer reports and re-electing individuals to positions on the committee where necessary. What we have organised is our annual L2 Prediction Competition. This is a competition that is open to anyone. You don’t have to be a SA member. For just £5 you could win a cash prize if you can forecast where the 24 teams will finish the season. More entries mean larger prizes for the winners. The SA website has all the details. www.sfcsa.co.uk/home/ Do stay safe and continue to support Boro and your SA. GEOFF GIBBS – SA Secretary
