ood afternoon and welcome to The Lamex Stadium for today’s FA Cup match against Peterborough United. I would like to wish a warm welcome to Darren Ferguson and his staff, as well as the Posh players and supporters. Last time out at home we picked up a big win for the club. I thought the team handled everything fantastically well. The conditions, the changes to the team and the pressure. They showed great grit to keep pushing and find a way to win. The players and the staff are putting the work in. Hard work is non-negotiable if you want to achieve success in any form of life. That hard work at Bragbury is starting to bear fruit on the field. Our tactical organisation, our belief, our physical and mental intensity are all starting to get somewhere near to the levels I expect and demand. We have a long, long way to go and we are only 11 games and 6 weeks into the team building process but the signs are there. That team building process can only grow with time but along that road we need to win football matches. Four wins and only one defeat from our last seven show there is significant progress. But we want more - our mentality must be to fight to win every game. But I challenge myself and the players to look for the good. I believe wholeheartedly that if we chose to look for the good rather than the bad, there is a lot to get excited about. Today is our first experience in the FA Cup this season and it is a special competition that we are proud to have enjoyed many memorable experiences as a football club in. The games against Newcastle and Tottenham, amongst others, are incredible memories that many people connected to our football club still reflect on and share stories of those special matches with

tremendous pride. Today is an opportunity for this team to write their own chapter of FA Cup success for the football club. Off the field chairman Phil Wallace provided an update in relation to the opening of the North Stand which will unfortunately not be open for today’s fixture. As a group of staff we are working relentlessly to ensure it is open as soon as possible however, with stakeholders including Hertfordshire Stevenage FC v Peterborough Utd

Building Control and the Safety Advisory Group. Since Wednesday’s update we have made further progress over the past few days and will be seeking to reengage the appropriate authorities’ assistance early next week. In other areas the new digital turnstiles in the centre of the East Terrace (turnstiles 10 & 11) have now been fully installed and are operational today. Work has begun on the footpath to link the West Stand Car Park with the North Stand and the installation of 36 new stadium TV’s which will provide commercial revenue streams and live coverage of our home fixtures in all bars and hospitality areas has been completed. Back to today and a reminder it is our dedicated Remembrance fixture which will see the club pay its respects to those that have died in the line of duty. BY GEORGE! WELCOME BACK TO A BORO LEGEND

hen a former player returns to a club there can often be some trepidation about the response they will receive. What was their time like at the club, what were the circumstances of their departure, did they even get on with the fans when they were there and are they returning to ‘get one over’ on their former employees? There can be little doubt that there will be a very positive response to the return of George Boyd at the Lamex, whether he plays or as has been suggested misses the game through injury, there may be more than one tear in the eye among some fans. From his introduction to the club in 2001 on the EFCO youth scholarship linked to North Hertfordshire College, to his sale in early January 2007 to Posh for a fee of £260,000, Boyd grew gradually into the legend status which he still holds to this day. We spoke to George just ahead of the game and it’s little surprise that he looks back fondly at his days with Boro saying: 14 | www.stevenagefc.com

“I have happy memories of my time with Stevenage. It really was a fantastic grounding in the game for me and it was where I truly grew up in the men’s game.” Brought to the club by Wayne Turner, Boyd rose through the ranks and continued to learn on and off the field. “When I first made my debut I was probably a bit too young, certainly physically and I needed to develop a little more. This was the case on and off the pitch as I also had to learn to live way from home and in digs which was tough in the beginning. The club was great for me though and by the time Mark Stimson took over I was seen as a front man and that’s when my game really took off and I got the move to Peterborough.” Built on the back of a talent which grew game by game in front of the eyes of Boro supporters, a workrate which was only truly revealed years later as Championship and Premier League stats showed his true contribution – and most importantly the fact that he was just a decent person, Boyd and his legacy have Stevenage FC v Peterborough Utd

always commanded respect at the Lamex. When he left some 12 years ago he did so with the very best wishes of the club and the faithful, safe in the knowledge that there were some great memories to savour. But despite his remarkable contribution, it actually took some years to truly get off the mark, Boyd scoring his first goal in April 2004 against Northwich after a spell where he had become used to sitting on the bench or making sub appearances. The 2005-06 season was one which showed the true potential, a 30-yard screamer against Paul Gascoigne’s Kettering in the FA Cup put him in the spotlight and he also scored against Northampton in the following round. Of course he scored these goals as a midfielder rather than as a striker although this changed when Mark Stimson put him up top from 2006 onwards and Boyd went on to flourish, scoring three against Stafford and four against Merthyr Tydfil in a purple patch. Goalscorer, creator and man who simply put in the miles on the pitch, Boyd was a true Boro legend for his all round contribution and his departure really came as little surprise. Indeed the only shock in this amazing ride is the fact that Boyd failed to hit the top flight sooner. His six year spell at Peterborough saw him linked to a number of clubs and have a few loan spells, most notably at Nottingham Forest, before he finally signed for Hull in the Championship in early 2013. Reflecting on his leap to the higher echelons of the pyramid, Boyd confirms that it was always an intention saying: “I set my heart on playing at the highest level but I truly believe that my start at Stevenage and then move to Peterborough left me so well grounded it kept me in the right frame of mind when I finally got into the Premier League with Hull. People always ask how different the football is but in truth I was the same person and the same player, it’s just about Stevenage FC v Peterborough Utd

belief in how good you really are or how good you can be.” The move suited both and Boyd was soon making his Premier League debut in 2013 after their promotion to the top flight. On September 1, 2014 Boyd then made the move to fellow Premier League side Burnley after the Clarets had been tracking him for some time. And at the end of that campaign he was not only ‘Player of the Season’ but also averaged 7.45 miles per match, the highest of any in the top flight that season. Further spells with Burnley in the Premier League and championship followed before Boyd signed for Sheffield Wednesday and eventually found his ways back to Peterborough, joining Posh on a free on July 15 this year.

Always keen for more success, Boyd is certainly not one to rest on his laurels and predicts more silverware saying: “I believe we can really achieve with this current Peterborough team and I am excited for the future that we have. I look ahead to my current playing days and career and I know I certainly want to stay within the game somehow.” Having already returned for the Ronnie Henry testimonial in the summer, there won’t be anything but love for Boyd when he comes to the Lamex with his Peterborough side. And while we no doubt all wish them the very best in League One this year, here’s hoping it’s Boro who will be breaking hearts and who will make progress in the cup. www.stevenagefc.com | 15

he U18 squad have been in great form recently registering not only consecutive wins in the League but also putting in some real high quality performances that have been so pleasing to watch. Working within an Academy environment it’s really important not to get too high and not get too low but it’s also really important to acknowledge excellent performances from both the team and its individuals. Certainly the last 4 weeks has seen a real upturn at U18 level, with players returning to full fitness and also with two very successful current loans in operation with Jack Moriarty getting his first experience of men’s football at Biggleswade FC and Jamie Jellis getting some valuable game time at Aylesbury Utd. Weirdly both players came up against each other in a league match recently and it was really pleasing to see both boys play such a prominent part in the game for their respective teams. You often read nowadays about the importance of loan periods for young players and indeed, we have seen the value of this at 1st team level however we have to find ways, much younger Stevenage FC v Peterborough Utd

and further down the pyramid, to see our players being challenged in a senior environment. Choosing the right club, working with the respective managers, ensuring the playing style suits the player in question, getting a Individual Learning Plan set up for the player, receiving feedback and monitoring the outcomes are all part and parcel of a loan period and vital for the development of a young player. Over the seasons we have got much better at this and feel we have set up a platform for the boys to have the best chance of being succesful. The past week has seen all the U18 focus turn to the FA Youth Cup and our tie against Brentwood. At the time of writing we are unsure whether the game will fall victim to the weather however our preparation has been very good, very detailed and the players themselves go into the game full of confidence and on a real high in terms of performances. We have developed a really strong reputation in the Youth Cup over the years and this season’s crop aim to emulate the performances of last season.

FOUNDATION OUR STORIES - TREVOR Two years ago, Trevor Prowse, who was overweight and suffered from severe anxiety, never thought he would be able to do everyday activities like playing with his grandchild or talking to a stranger on the phone. It wasn’t until he was referred by his GP to meet Healthy Lifestyles Officer Hannah Marsh at Stevenage FC Foundation, when his life turned around. Hannah said “When I first met Trevor he told me our meeting was the first time he had left his house in a week due to his anxiety. He agreed to try our ‘Introduction to Exercise’ class and thoroughly enjoyed himself and hasn’t looked back since.” Stevenage FC Foundation’s Introduction to Exercises classes are designed for people with long-term medical conditions (both physical and mental) and are mainly circuit based. The sessions also incorporate other activities like Soccercise, Pilates and Boxercise and have a strong element of social support with the group regularly opening up and sharing their experiences and struggles with their health. In the two years that Trevor has been involved, he has lost a remarkable 6 stone and his blood pressure has dropped, to the point where he no longer has to take medication. Talking about his experiences, he said: “I started suffering with severe anxiety from my early 20’s. It effects your whole life and makes you so self-conscious, to Stevenage FC v Peterborough Utd

the point where you can’t even leave the house. “Taking that huge step to take part in the sessions at Stevenage FC Foundation was such a life-changing decision for me. I’m doing things now I never dreamed of – last weekend I even went sky diving! It’s also the little things that make all the difference. I recently became a grandad for the first time, and when I was overweight I wouldn’t have been able to do very much. But now, I can be active and it means so much. Anxiety has been a part of my life for so long – but those simple things are really what make all the difference.” The 58 year-old credits the sessions for not only helping him physically, but mentally, as he no longer dreads meeting new people and looks forward to classes each week. He added: “Stevenage FC Foundation, the course they run and Hannah are all superb and I would recommend it to anyone. There are people there of all ages, all levels of fitness and everybody is there for their own reason. We controlled the game for the first 20 minutes taking the lead through Amy Makewell. We soon doubled the lead with Lucy Webster picking up her first goal for the club. Kent then started to create chances of their own and probably should have scored, but Hannah Vandersluis in goal for us kept them out with some very good saves. We then made it 3-0, Chloe Lupo-Gunn getting her first senior goal since coming back from an ACL injury with a sensational strike. Kent’s persistence was then rewarded and they brought the score back to 3-1 before half time. In the second half we needed to manage the game and we did that effectively, finally making it four and getting out of sight. Erin Pope did the damage, scoring her second free kick in consecutive weeks. Amy Makewell then added our fifth before Kent got some consolation with a second towards the end. Overall it was a pleasing result and pleasing performance although there are still some areas we need to work on. Picking up the three points was a priority however. Stevenage FC v Peterborough Utd

LATEST NEWS WELCOME It’s the FA Cup and it’s fantastic for Stevenage to be entertaining Peterborough United here at The Lamex. A big Boro welcome to all fans and supporters of “The Posh” this afternoon. How I love the FA Cup. I still hark back to the time in 2012 when we had our best run ever in this competition. Stevenage had knocked Newcastle United out in round 4 and had drawn Harry Redknapp’s Spurs in round 5. Drawing at home 0-0 with Tottenham meant that we were also still in the hat for round 6 – the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup. Unbelievable! I remember the date, February 19th when the commentator on the telly said - “Stevenage or Tottenham Hotspur shall play Bolton Wanderers”. I had goosebumps on goose-bumps that day.

FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION “This is the first time that an FA Cup winner has been expelled from the Football League.” Tom Greatrex is vice-chair of the FSA and these are the words he used when he addressed a Select Committee at the Department of Digital, Media & Sports (DCMS) on October 21st. He was referring to the demise of Bury FC and he had his guns squarely trained on the EFL and the FA. Representing the EFL, Stevenage FC v Peterborough Utd

Executive Chairman Debbie Jevans responded by stating that it had been an incredibly difficult decision to expel Bury. Jevans went on: “We have to understand what has happened and learn lessons from that.” Damian Collins MP (Select Committee chairman) was particularly damning of the EFL’s failures, saying that: “Fans of Bury FC will be thinking that the EFL has failed in its duty.” Greg Clarke, chairman of the FA contributed to the discussion: “It’s difficult for the FA to be close enough to any competition to spot the latest tricks being used by unscrupulous owners.” The DCMS Select Committee continues its investigation.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY Herbert Day, Harry Ward and Owen Abbiss. Three names that are engraved on our War Memorial on the Bowling Green in the Old Town. All three played for Stevenage Town FC. Harry and Owen were both killed in 1944 in unrelated incidents during the Normandy campaign. Herbert lost his life at Passchendaele in 1917. The Supporters’ Association will be represented at the Remembrance Day parade and laying a wreath. Join us if you can, at the War Memorial in the High Street from 10:30am tomorrow morning.

The attacking threats of Ivan Toney, Marcus Maddison and Mohamed Eisa have seen them score over 30 goals between them. Manager Darren Ferguson orchestrated back to back promotions from League Two to the Championship 11 years ago. IVAN TONEY were their worst enemy when they scored two own goals in a 4-3 defeat. Three days later, the club were beaten once again, away from home against Shrewsbury in an unsatisfying 1-0 defeat at New Meadow.

STAR MAN… Ivan Toney has been the star striker of their dangerous front three in this campaign with 12 goals in 17 games. The 23-year-old joined the Club at the start of last season and bagged 23 goals in his debut season. Toney came through the Northampton youth system and was later snapped up by Premier League outfit Newcastle United – playing just two games. He was sent on loan to Barnsley, Scunthorpe and Wigan, where he picked up a League One winners medal with The Latics.

DARREN FERGUSON

Darren Ferguson is now into his third spell at the London Road Stadium after first taking charge in 2007, and has been instrumental in their last three promotion campaigns, twice promoted to the Championship. He has also gone on to manage Preston North End and saw Doncaster promoted in 2017 after finishing 3rd in League Two. The son of ex-Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, the former midfielder was a part of The Red Devils first of many Premier League titles in 1993. His spell at Old Trafford lasted four years which saw him playing just 27 times and he was sold to Wolves for £250,000. by Taylor Catton
