CHAIRMAN
PHIL WALLACE G ood evening and welcome to the players and officials of Peterborough United for today’s Sky Bet League One fixture at The Lamex Stadium. I think the players and fans of both clubs have been looking forward to this fixture for some time. I know I have. The fact we’re in fourth place and Posh are just one place behind in fifth adds even more drama to the game. Both clubs do, of course, know each other well. We’ve played each other numerous times, sold players to Posh and bought players from them so there’s not much we don’t know about the way they operate and the way they want to play.
They have a respected manager in Darren Ferguson, who has overhauled the squad this season in an attempt to win promotion back to the Championship. This objective is important to Posh as the financial benefits from the league above are significantly higher than in League One, and, having been relegated from the Championship in 2022, they would have a legacy of those higher costs to a certain extent. One thing Posh have done better than most in the EFL is the way they’ve traded players in and out for financial gain – whilst gaining success on the pitch. You do have to stand and admire their transfer business over the years as the combination of Darragh and Barry Fry has proved so successful in buying, developing and selling players, and this has been the foundation of their success since they teamed up. In turn, we’ve changed our mindset in the last two seasons, whereby we’ve moved from counting youth team minutes to only focusing on winning. That doesn’t mean to say we won’t put a youngster in when it’s appropriate – as shown by the debuts Steve has given to some of our Academy lads – but the name of the game is winning, and we’re not interested in anything else. Making winning a relentless part of our DNA took a little time and a change of personnel, but our recruitment last season and this season into that new philosophy has been outstanding. Off the pitch, we continue to invest in facilities, and upgrading of our Academy, Bragbury End and the Stadium continues as we pursue excellence in everything we do. There is a limit to where we can go, but we have a lot to achieve yet. It’s an exciting ride – people are taking notice. Our gates are increasing, and we want to win every game we play. Our managerial team, led by Steve, are bringing joy to so many Boro fans and long may that continue. I suspect we’re in for a cracking game, so whether you’re playing or watching – enjoy the match!

B
roadhall Way welcomed 2,007 Stevenage fans on the 29th of November, as the two of the most in-form teams in the Conference met. Exeter had won four out of their last five matches in the league; a feat that Stevenage had also achieved, rather impressively as Graham Westley’s side started to kick into gear; fans of the Boro were starting to watch Westley start to turn around the clubs’ fortunes, after flirting with relegation a year before this fixture. As many would have predicted, the game sparked into life quickly. Exeter had netted eight goals in their last three league games, it was no surprise therefore that they opened the scoring within thirteen minutes via Santos Gaia, making it his third goal of the season.
Saturday 29th November 2003
Nationwide Conference
After a lot of back and forth between the sides, it was Exeter who doubled their lead as James Coppinger scored in a third consecutive game, he and Exeter was seemingly finding their rhythm. That was until Anthony Elding pulled one back for the hosts in the 67th minute, providing a lifeline for the home faithful. It was Elding once again who scored in the 78th minute to complete an impressive Stevenage comeback against a high-flying Exeter side. Elding’s brace was a familiar sight for Boro’ fans as the striker had scored a winning brace against Accrington Stanley in the teams’ last home game. Despite both sides efforts, the game finished 2-2, a result that the home fans would walk away happy with, considering the fact that they were trailing by two goals up until just over the hour mark. As for Exeter, the game was a frustrating result which left the team in fourth. ALFIE NICHOLSON CLICK BELOW TO CHECK OUT THE PROGRAMME

BORO
HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 28 NOVEMBER
You’re thinking it, we’re saying it; how on earth are we already in the final stages of November? For this particular date in the diary, we’ve not had it all our own way over the years. But we can at least say with total confidence that we have (so far) always found the net on 28 November before. We can only hope that doesn’t change this time around. As things stand, Boro’ are on a run of two straight wins on this date; a streak that –`to be fair – stretches back 14 years! It started with a hard-fought win on the road at Salisbury. It was followed up six years on with our only Football League outing on 28 November until now; Chris Whelpdale with a hattrick in a remarkable 4-3 home win over Morecambe. Four goals in our favour on this date last time out then – and the same first time out too; Danny Dance with a brace all the way back in 1981. In total, we’ve turned out eight times on 28 November; winning three, drawing three, and losing two. To be honest, you could happily write off those two defeats as being in lower-priority competitions too. But we couldn’t say the same if Posh have ideas of ending our current winning streak on 28 November this evening…
IT’S PETERBOROUGH UNITED AGAIN…
The Posh our one of our nearest league neighbours this season – but competitive meetings haven’t exactly been too common over the years. Our first such encounter came at the start of our first League One campaign in August 2011; Boro’ losing 4-3 after extra time in our League Cup Round One meeting. Since then, however, we’ve only played them six more times – and only once before have we actually been in the same division as each other (2013-4). As things stand, Boro’ have won the last two games between the sides – a Football League Trophy group stage fixture last season at London Road, following up our League Cup
1981 Stevenage Borough 4-1 Wootton Blue Cross, United Counties League Premier Division (Whishaw, Dance 2, Her-ring) 1983 Stevenage Borough 1-4 Stansted, Courage Floodlit League (Lear) 1989 Rainham Town 1-1 Stevenage Borough, Vauxhall Opel League Division Two North (Williams) 1992 Harrow Borough 2-2 Stevenage Borough, FA Trophy R3Q (Hann, Gittings) 1995 Kettering Town 2-1 Stevenage Borough, Spalding Cup R2 (Bates) 1998 Stevenage Borough 2-2 Telford United, Football Conference (Love, Alford) 2009 Salisbury City 0-1 Stevenage Borough, Blue Square Premier (Griffin) 2015 Stevenage 4-3 Morecambe, Sky Bet League Two (Wells, Whelpdale 3) Round Two home win… a week beforehand last season!
BORO’ AT THIS STAGE…
Gameweek 20 Time flies when you’re having fun – and here we find ourselves fast approaching the league campaign’s halfway mark. We’re not quite there, but we are at least in fine fettle; the 2023-4 campaign representing our 11th best points return after 19 games (35). It’s also the only season in our senior history where we’ve been on this points total at this point. If we compare and contrast with past League One efforts, we’re two points better off than 2012-3 – and seven better off than 2011-2. We need not mention our ill-fated 2013-4 season at this point. Our best-ever showing at this point of a league season? It’s at this point our recordbreaking 1990-1 campaign started to get into its strides. After 19 games back then, we’d won 15 and lost just once; scoring 55 and close to a half century of points (48). Our 2019-20 season, naturally, is our worst showing after 19 fixtures – two wins and a mere 15 points.

MAGIC MOMENT
Carabao Cup R2 – 23 August 2022
1
STEVENAGE FC
0 PETERBOROUGH UNITED As this is our only competitive home win over Posh to date, it’s an easy pick for this evening’s magic moment. And it’s one in which we perhaps saw the early emergence of the legend that is Big Goal Reidy. Both sides came into this cup tie on good form at the top end of the season; us in League Two and having knocked out Reading to reach this stage, while Posh were on a decent run in League One. Chances came and went to both teams as the game progressed, with our visitors even having a goal ruled out for offside. Late on, it felt like matters wouldn’t be settled within the regulation 90. Aaron Chapman saved well twice in the last 10 minutes to keep us level, before BGR popped up in stoppage time to sweep home the winning goal. By Pete Hayman courtesy of
boroguide.co.uk
ON BOTH SIDES…
To play today?: It’s only Boro’ tonight who have the option of featuring lads who have turned out for both sides; Ben and Nathan Thompson the two notable examples, having arrived from London Road in the summer. But we also have Carl Piergianni, Jordan Roberts, and Harry Anderson – all of whom were at Posh in the early stages of their careers. Best of the Rest: This is a bit of a glitzy list all told, with a number of iconic Boro’ names to have also played for Posh at one stage or another. George Boyd, Michael Bostwick, and Matt Godden each made a move north from Broadhall Way to London Road, while Charlie Lee and Chris Whelpdale both came to us from Posh (via Gillingham). Let’s not forget either that it was Posh who gave us a lend of Giuliano Grazioli back in 1997.

ACADEMY T hank you for reading these match day programmes notes and taking an interest in our academy. As I always start, I would like to wish the gaffer and the team the best of luck in the weeks busy schedule as we host Peterborough and then Port Vales in the FA Cup.
FA YOUTH CUP
Last Thursday evening, we unfortunately went out of the FA Youth cup R2 against a strong AFC Wimbledon, narrowly losing out 2-1 with our goal coming from Tyrique Tekasala. Despite the result, the performance was pleasing especially the second half display where we dominated for large spells but just could not score. What was most pleasing about the whole evening was the impact that our U16 pre scholar players made, we finished with 4 x U16’s and this continues to give me great hope in the direction of the Academy.
LOAN WATCH
OWEN COCHRANE has completed a spell at Kettering Town and joined National League South side Aveley and has started in his first two games. THEO ALEXANDROU has completed his spell at Cheshunt FC and we will now continue to look for his next steps. DAVID HICKS enjoyed an impressive spell at Potters Bar Town and was awarded their Player of the Month award for October.
KYMANI SKYERS is enjoyed plenty of game time at Cambridge City in the northern premier.
HEAD OF COACHING
As some of you may be aware, Ieuan Lewis a long-standing academy coach is departing the club at the end of this year. After 9 years at Stevenage FC and 4 years as the Head of Academy Coaching, he is moving onto a new and exciting challenge that will enable him to spend even more time with his family. He has been a huge inspiration to many coaches and will be sorely missed in our environment. Over the years we have worked together, we have enjoyed many healthy discussions, shared many hours of laughter and even had the odd disagreement! Ieuan is a valued member of staff and trusted friend. I wish Ieuan and his wonderful family every success as he now can enjoy even more family time! We are in the middle of receiving applications and the deadline closes on Friday 8th December. I
t was a debut to remember and forget all at once for Katie Boyle, who helped Stevenage FCW to a single goal lead before being stretchered off with a leg injury and the team surrendering the three points to Bowers & Pitsea. Darcy Drewitt and Olivia Bilson with her first goal of the season overturned Kelsey Millen’s opener to send Boro’ home with nothing for the third game in succession. It had all started so brightly for the ladies. Mathilda Fidler saw her first effort fly just wide of the post, before her second effort – which appeared to cross the line – ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper. Amy Makewell tried her luck from distance and although close, didn’t trouble Hannah Stone in the opposition goal. After seventeen minutes though, Boro seized control. There was an element of fortune for the finish, but the pressure exerted by the triumvirate of Amy Gooderham, Kristal Clarke and Kelsey Millen saw Bowers dispossessed high up the pitch. Millen took advantage with a dink to the right before unleashing an effort that was on target, before being deflected past Stone. It was no more than Boro’ deserved. But within ten minutes joy turned to despair. Boyle, playing up after impressing in the Under 23s this season and filling in the gap left by Grace Brooks’ suspension, rose brilliantly to block a ball into the box. Upon landing awkwardly, she was unable to get up and the game was halted. After a few minutes it was clear that Boyle would need emergency attention
and the game was suspended to allow for an ambulance to attend. (Katie is absolutely fine and was well looked after and is now recovering at home.) It took nearly an hour for the final seventeen minutes of the half to recommence. Hannah Nebbitt was next to try her luck, but her first effort went inches wide from thirty-five yards out, while her free kick required a finishing touch to be applied that was not forthcoming. The half concluded with an effort at the far post that clipped the post as Gooderham headed the ball goalwards from a superb Millen cross. The second half started how the first ended as Nebbitt tried her luck from distance again with a slightly easier collection for Stone, but Bowers began to show signs of life. Whitney Locke was first to come close. After lifting the ball over Celine Ray, she attempted to do the same to the onrushing defence only to see the ball bounce narrowly wide. Makewell was next to test Stone as excellent work down the right again – this time from Gooderham – saw a superb ball into the box for the striker. Her volley looked destined to make the net bulge, but Stone had positioned herself well to save. Five minutes later, Bowers were level. It began from a throw in where Boro’ sportingly gave the ball back to the goalkeeper. From there, Bowers earned a free kick which was pumped towards goal by Olivia Harris and crashed off the crossbar for Drewitt to smash home. The game entered a period of back and forth as both sides battled for the three points. Makewell saw another effort inside the box drag just wide in response to an effort from Millie Isherwood from the opposition. Fidler had one last chance to put Boro’ ahead, but the ball was always rising. Then Bowers delivered the hammer blow. Whitney Locke saw her shot deflected wide and from that corner, captain Bilson rose highest to head the ball into the net for the turnaround. Gooderham and Nebbitt both had late opportunities that were not taken and the whistle finally blew, some three hours after the first whistle had initially been blown. Once again Boro’ saw a game of chances that were not converted cost them the win. The team is waiting for something to click in these kinds of games, they will have to wait for another week as St Albans City are welcomed to the County Ground this Sunday.

Meet the boss
Darren Ferguson is the most successful manager in Peterborough United’s history. He has masterminded four promotions as the club’s manager across five (four really but five if you are being pedantic) spells in charge and also brought major silverware in terms of the EFL Trophy back in it’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy guise in 2014. Ferguson and chairman Darragh MacAnthony
Darren Ferg
uson
have a pretty unique relationship, arguably one of the most unique in the EFL - who would come back after a sacking? Who would hire a manager after he left? Ferguson, son of Sir Alex Ferguson has had managerial experience away from the Weston Homes Stadium at Doncaster Rovers and Preston North End, but it is fair to say, he has at home in PE2. He has managed over 700 career games and has chalked up over 300 wins with a 42 per cent win ratio as he prepared for the 20232024 campaign.

Josh Knight joined Posh on a permanent basis after previous successful loan stints with the club and his versatility has been an important part of his game. He can play as a centre back, as a central midfielder and his marauding runs has also made him useful in the right full-back position. Knight started with Leicester City and had a successful loan spell in the Championship with Wycombe Wanderers, but he couldn’t keep the Chairboys in the division.

Kwame P oku Kwame Poku joined Posh in the summer of 2021 from Colchester United following in the footsteps of Sammie Szmodics and Frankie Kent to the club and has since continued to develop and hone his skills, whether that be a as a wide forward or as a number ten. He has trademarked the ball roll and is one of the trickiest opponents to come up against at Sky Bet League One level. He is determined to improve his goal contributions this season and has been among the goals in pre-season ahead of the 2023-2024 campaign. Poku already has over 100 first team appearances under his belt in his career and will be looking for another successful campaign.

LATEST NEWS
“Steve and Pete are going for it on Tuesday night” was a voice heard in an Old Town pub last week. They’re right too. It should be a cracking game this evening and I’ve no doubt that our near neighbours from up the A1 will bring hundreds of ‘Posh’ supporters to the Lamex. And very welcome they are too. The Posh Supporters Trust (PST) is chaired by Marco Graziano and fulfils a similar role to that which our own SA provides here at Stevenage. Interestingly though, the PST is under-pinned by the fact that it is registered as a Society under the Co-operative and Community Benefits Societies Act. So, a big warm welcome to Marco and his fellow board members who comprise Dene Butler, John Henson, Sue Butler, Barry Bennett, Peter Lloyd and Ray Cole. Ray is the curator of the Posh’s on-line museum, so doubtless he and I will be catching up for a chat in the near future.
can’t do it again this evening. The SA’s volunteer ticket sellers are situated at strategic points all around the ground and they’re all ready, willing and able to help you procure a ticket. If you don’t buy a ticket, you can’t win the 50-50 draw.
ON-LINE VIRTUAL MUSEUM
Most of the Premier League clubs and many EFL clubs are now realising the importance of their own individual heritage, not least the significance and value within their own representative communities. This evening’s opposition realised this some time ago and have supported the Posh Supporters Trust on-line museum since it started in 2014. Here at Stevenage, exploratory discussions have started with key proponents of such a scheme with a view to establishing our own variant.
BLACKPOOL
I was pleased to note that the Lancashire Police have secured an image of an individual who they would very much like to speak to in connection with the incident concerning the SA bus on its recent away trip to Blackpool. This image can be seen on the website of the Comet newspaper. If anyone can help in this respect, I urge them to contact the Lancashire Police, whose details are appended within the newspaper’s article.
BURTON ALBION
On Saturday December 9th, Stevenage journey up to Staffordshire to take on Dino Maamria and John Dreyer’s Burton Albion. It’s a 10:00am departure from The Lamex at a cost of just £25 a seat.
