After a home draw with Macclesfield and a narrow defeat to Bradford, Boro clinched success when a Charlie Griffin double saw them well on the road to victory. Things haven’t changed much as Boro added a third near the end through Michael Bostwick, a blistering left-foot drive proving typically, well, Michael CountyBostwick.did grab a late headed goal but it was organised Boro who took the deserved points. IT’S PETERBOROUGH UNITED AGAIN… Like us, Posh are staging posts along the A1. But a relatively quick and simple journey between the two is no promise of regular meetings. And that’s why we’ve been so far restricted to just five competitive fixtures over the seasons. It’s like we’re two circles of a Venn diagram

ON THIS DAY: 23 AUGUST Our exploits at Reading have earned us an unplanned early-season fixture. And, when it comes to 23 August over the years, we’d fared alright… up until more recent times. After all, it all started on this date in history for us with a win at the expense of British Timken Athletic. No – it wasn’t *that* win. Instead, goals from Trevor Metcalfe and Ken Morgan steered us to a more conventional 2-1 victory at their Afterplace.a duff result at Lewes on this day in 1986, Boro’ won the next four matches played on 23 August; three of which were on home turf. But it all went awry in 2008. Graham Westley’s second spell in charge had already got off to a dire start with a 5-0 thumping at Wrexham. Ebbsfleet United were in no mood to be charitable as we went into our fourth match of the campaign looking for a first win. We were again on the wrong end of a hiding. Wycombe Wanderers swept us aside in our only Football League match played on 23 August (to date). And, given our assignment tonight in Carabao Cup Round Two, the less said about our 2016 outing on this day. Peter Crouch netted a hattrick as Stoke City – then of the Premier League – recorded a four-goal win at the Lamex. Let’s hope we don’t have yet another ‘Peter’ coming to town on 23 August with the aim of ending our League Cup aspirations.

1980 British Timken Athletic 1-2 Stevenage Borough, United Counties League Division One (Metcalfe, Morgan) 1986 Lewes 2-1 Stevenage Borough, Vauxhall Opel League Division One (Driver) 1993 Stevenage Borough 2-0 Dulwich Hamlet , Diadora League Premier Division (Pearson, Venables)

that only a slight crossover point; the Posh more familiar with the top end of League One and the lower end of the Championship, us only briefly in League One before returning to League Two. We’ve managed just one season in the same division together. The 2013-4 campaign saw us trade 1-0 away wins in a bizarre reversal of expectations. Apart from that, Posh have now been twice responsible for putting us out of a cup.

ON BOTH SIDES… Back in the day, it wasn’t uncommon for Boro’ to be a future destination for Posh players. There are plenty of players over the years who turned out at London Road, before later arriving at Broadhall Way. And there were also the times that we’d take a lad or two on loan from ‘em. After all, lest we forget that Giuliano Grazioli is only a household name here at the Boro’ because the Posh allowed him to come and play for us for a bit. Even today, there’s at least one name who has followed that route south down the A1. Carl Piergianni, of course, has been elsewhere between London Road and Broadhall Way. But it proves that it’s still a path well But,travelled.let’s not forget there have been those who have done things in reverse too. George Boyd earned us a tidy wedge in 2007 when Posh came in for him. And, at the time, no-one begrudged Boydie the opportunity to take that step up. We also have a rare treat in the shape of Michael Bostwick… in more ways than one, of course. Is Bozzie the only guy to have ended up at Posh after establishing himself at Boro’, before then returning from London Road? Looks like it!

Price It was the perfect opening day of the season for Stevenage FCW as they began life in the Eastern Region Women’s Football League (ERWFL) with a victory. The first goal of the game in the 13th minute. A ball was released down the left channel, which found Amy Makewell, she latched on to the ball and drove towards the by-line. A precision ball whipped into the box cleared all the defenders and found Becky Shephard free at the far post and she had the easy task of slotting the ball into the back of the net to score on her second debut to make it 1-0 to the ‘Boro. It was roll on roll off subs and First Team Manager Fadi Mazloum had the luxury of spreading minutes across his squad. On the 24th minute, and following a triple change, two of the substitutes combined to good effect to double our scoreline. Dionne Manning picked the ball up inside the opposition’s half and strode forward carrying the ball before bending through a precision pass to Emily Schofield to the left edge of the area and she was able to sweep the ball home past the ‘keeper and 2-0 to the Ten‘Boro.minutes later and the hosts would pull a goal back against us. A free kick was whipped into the box and it was adjudged that the AFC Sudbury attacker was illegally bundled over in the box and a penalty was awarded and duly dispatched to make it 2-1. No more than two minutes later, the ‘Boro re-stablished their two goal margin courtesy of winger Jodie Bellinger. Some neat interplay in a tight space saw a ball over the top on the turn, which released Bellinger through the right channel. A spectacular cross-come-shot was launched towards the goal and over the keeper’s head to make it 3-1. A pulsating half saw Sudbury strike back just before half-time. A ball crossed in from the left was turned to make it 3-2 at half-time. It was a warm and humid day and Stevenage professionally closed out the game throughout the second half to make it 3 points gained on matchday 1. Our next match is another away game as we face Royston Town on Sunday 4 September, with a 2pm kick off. We would urge all ‘Boro fans to make the short trip to Royston Town FC to come and support us. Come on you ‘Boro!!

26 FCSTEVENAGE V UTDPETERBOROUGH STEVENAGE FC FOUNDATION FUNDING PARTNERS

Stevenage FC Women kicked off their 2022-23 campaign on Sunday with a 3-2 win away at AFC Sudbury. A big thank you to the Stevenage fans that travelled to support the team, some of whom were watching the team for the first time. Our Women & Girls’ pathway, is something that we are immensely proud of within the Foundation, not only because it is one of the best around but also that it has been created, over the last 5 years, by a Stevenage girl in Dani Toyn and is very much a pathway with the local female footballer at the heart of it. The pathway, does however face challenges in order to allow the Foundation to continue to offer our entry level opportunities in Wildcats and Girls Football Centres , the hugely successful Girls Development Centre, and newly licenced FA Emerging Talent Centre. You’ll have noticed last week that the Womens’ team published their 2022-23 team photo, and that their shirts still had space for a main sponsor. We’ll shortly be announcing a couple of sponsorship deals that have been secured, and are eternally gratefully to those businesses and individuals that provide us with resources to offer this pathway. We are still looking for that headline partner though, a likeminded business or individual that can help us achieve equal opportunities for local female footballers and empower these young women to be the best versions of Ifthemselves.youareinterested in discussing this further with us, then please contact Dani or I on JOEstevenagefcf.comwomenandgirls@GOUDE Chief Executive

It’s a clash of the form teams from Leagues One and Two in this Carabao Cup tie which should prove to be a Posh, cracker.just like Boro, have had a brilliant start to the season and currently sit second in the league with four wins from their first five league encounters. A spirited performance at Cheltenham where they went in 2-0 down at half time, only to turn it around and win 3-2, really has set the tone for our near Indeedneighbours.thetwo goals conceded at Whaddon Road have only been matched by two more which they let in at Home Park on the way to a 2-0 defeat at Plymouth, otherwise it has been shutouts all the way. Posh reached this stage of the cup with a 2-0 win against, yep you’ve guessed it, Plymouth, and their recent form showed no sigh of abating with a thumping 4-0 triumph over Lincoln on Saturday. But Boro need not fear this, along with our own powerful start (and some would say even better with five wins and a draw) we of course drew 1-1 with Posh in pre-season action with Luke Norris drilling home a penalty.

MEET THE BOSS: Boss Grant McCann joined Peterborough as a player from Scunthorpe in May 2010 and soon made his mark, being named as skipper and taking over the armband from one George Boyd. This was the start of a spell which saw McCann make 160 appearances for the club and then move into manager mode, being named as caretaker boss in 2015 before taking on a two-year stint in 2016. He has since had spells at Doncaster and Hull before coming back to London Road in February of this year.

Jack Marriott returned to Posh for a second spell in the summer of 2021 following his departure from Derby County, where he proved a big hit under Frank Lampard. Marriott’s previous spell at Posh lasted one season as he scooped the League One Golden boot before choosing Pride Park as his next destination following a summer of speculation. A supremely confident finisher, Marriott has pace as well as determination and netted his first goal in the Championship for the club in the defeat to Sheffield United before injury curtailed his progress.

Well, apparently a hundred years ago, a manager was looking for “posh players for a posh club” - and it Peterborough’sstuck! shirt badge has the moniker “On This Rock” depicted - in deference to the city council’s civic coat of arms. Analogous as to why Stevenage’s nickname is “The Boro” Themethinks.Posh Supporters’ Trust are chaired by Marco Graziano. On behalf of the SA, I bid welcome to Marco and his committee this evening.
