FROM THE

ARCHIVES

Stevenage were unbeaten in their last four games in all competitions as they readied themselves to host a Telford United who weren’t in such a strong vein of form: only collecting seven points across their last six games. Stevenage were battling on four domestic fronts; the Endsleigh Trophy, FA Cup, FA Trophy as well as of course, the Conference. The busy fixture congestion was starting to catch up with ‘Boro as it was their third game during the course of just a week. The Telford defence would have been quaking at the prospect of facing Stevenage marksman, Carl Alford, and rightly so. The striker scored his fifth goal in just four games as he netted against Telford. Alford wasn’t the only Stevenage attacker to be

continuing his superb scoring streak, as Michael Love grabbed ‘Boro’s second goal of the game, a goal which would make it his third in just as many games. Stevenage were doing a good job of late of not only being free scoring, but also shutting out the opposition. The hosts had only conceded one goal across their last four matches, Telford capitalised perhaps on the fatigue creeping into the home team as they scored two goals of their own to complete an enthralling game at Broadhall Way which finished as a 2-2 draw. Stevenage manager, Paul Fairclough, didn’t realise that this game was one of his last as ‘Boro head coach, as he was sacked just a month later in a huge shock to players and fans as his team sat in third place in the league. Stevenage would end the season sixth and remain in the Conference. Telford would narrowly miss the drop and finish 17th . ALFIE NICHOLSON CLICK BELOW TO CHECK OUT THE PROGRAMME

BORO

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 02 DECEMBER

The second day of December is one that, traditionally, hasn’t been short on drama if you’re a Boro’ fan. We have seen some chunky wins, goals aplenty, and some tempers frayed. So, that sets a pretty high bar for this afternoon’s fixture! We’ve won four out of nine previous games played on 2 December, and each one has been a biggie: 4-0, 4-0, 5-2, and 5-0. The fourth and most recent of those came exactly one year ago today; blowing Barrow away in a rare Friday night outing under the Lamex lights. Boro’ also hit five on this date five years before that – in the very same round of the FA Cup as we find ourselves here today. Swindon Town had no answer as we cruised into Round Three; Danny Newton’s brace capping a fine outing on that afternoon here. A similar performance today would go down very well indeed. It’s hard to ignore the fact that Boro’ have recorded as many red cards on this date as we have wins. Even stranger is the fact that all four

dismissals were spread across just two games. And, to add an extra layer to that, we didn’t even lose when finishing those matches with nine men; picking up points against Donny and Oxford United respectively.

IT’S PORT VALE AGAIN…

It’s barely six weeks since we last met the Valiants; our goalless stalemate here on 21 October taking us to 18 previous matches between the teams. To bring you right up to speed, We sit on five wins and our guests are on four – with nine draws making up the rest. But one stat we might want to do something about this afternoon is our lack of a win in our past four encounters. Another troublesome stat is our zero wins in three cup clashes between us and them. 17 November 2009 – FA Cup R1 (replay)

0 STEVENAGE FC 1

PORT VALE

It was heartache for Boro’ in the culmination of our first-ever meeting with the Valiants; our visitors edging our Round One replay at the Amex. Over the course of 180 minutes plus stoppage time, the two sides were evenly matched. And it served as a useful test run for a Boro’ side that’d go on to win the Blue Square Premier title that season. A year later, we’d be in the same division as each other. Back to the tale of this FA Cup tie, however, and our hopes were nearly ended at Vale Park in the original tie – despite an encouraging performance at Vale Park. It needed a late Charlie Griffin leveller to bring us back to the Lamex. But it meant we had home advantage and high hopes of progressing to Round Two. Alas, we couldn’t find a way past a resolute Vale defence. It was perhaps an early insight into the tests we’d face when we went up to the Football League. The decisive moment came in the first half; the result of an uncharacteristic error by captain Mark Roberts. An attempted back pass fell short and, despite the best efforts of Chris Day, Louis Dodds took full advantage. For all our possession afterwards, chances proved few and far between – and Vale saw the tie out.

ON BOTH SIDES…

To play today?: No ex-Valiants in the Boro’ squad at present, but our guests bring with them midfielder Tom Conlon and forward Ryan Loft; both of whom have turned out for us here at the Lamex in years gone by.. Best of the Rest: Steve Guppy, Lawrie Wilson, Darren Murphy, Tyler Walker, Calum Willock, Kurtis Guthrie, and Daryl McMahon are among the players to have featured for both Boro’ and Port Vale at one point or another in Steve Guppy history.

BORO’ AT THIS STAGE…

FA Cup Round Two So, here we are again – sitting within reach of FA Cup Round Three and all the potential glamour ties that might await us. First, though, we need to complete the task at hand. And this will be our 16th attempt at reaching the third round. Our current record at this stage of the competition is finely balanced as things stand too – eight wins, seven defeats. Our first appearance in an FA Cup Round Two match came back in 1996 – a famous win away at Leyton Orient earning us a “trip” to Birmingham City. We repeated the trick a year later as we defeated Cambridge United after a replay. But our luck ran out in 1998 as we were easily beaten at Lincoln City – starting a run of five straight defeats at this stage of the tournament (1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005). It wouldn’t be until 2010 when we would reach Round Two again. The good news is that our fortunes picked up – and, starting in 2010, we’ve won six of the eight second round matches we’ve played. The two other results were both 1-0 defeats – and both were at the hands of Yeovil Town. It’s a strong record and one that we can hopefully maintain. By Pete Hayman courtesy of

Amy Makewell forward

YOU’VE BEEN WITH US FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS OVER A FEW SEASONS, OVER THOSE 100 GAMES, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST HIGHLIGHTS? I think the County Cup has always been a big memory for the club. It’s a competition we’ve done so well in over the years. I’ve always managed to get a few goals in the tournament, so that’s always been a highlight. In the last couple of years we’ve done well in the FA Cup.

YOU WERE PART OF THE PROMOTION TEAM IN 2016 – WHAT WOULD YOU MAKE OF THAT TEAM COMPARED TO NOW? We were a very good side, we were all very good friends outside of football which helped with the bond as well. You can’t really compare it as such, the game has grown so much over the years, and the way we play now is completely different to the way we played then. We move the ball around so well now and we’ve got so many good players now than we did then. YOU’RE ON 48 GOALS NOW – ARE THERE ANY THAT STICK OUT FOR YOU? Every goal’s a goal and they all count. ANOTHER 100 GAMES TO LOOK FORWARD TO? Haha – I don’t think so!

FOUNDATION FUNDING PARTNERS

S

tevenage FC Foundation and Stevenage Football Club have teamed up once again with local food bank, the Foodshed, to support their Christmas campaign to collect over toys and treats for children and young people aged 0–18-year-olds in our local community, that may go without this Christmas. Donations are being requested for new and unopened toys and Christmas treats, such as selection boxes, for children of all ages that will be collated by the Foundation and donated to the Toyshed on Monday 18th December, so they can reach local families in need during the festive period. Supporters wishing to make donations can do so the following ways: • Bring your donations to The Lamex Stadium during the week and drop at the Foundation office, located in the South Stand • Bring your donations to the Stevenage FC Academy next to Shephalbury Park, and the

Academy staff will be collecting from parents of children in our pathway too • Bring your donations to the Stevenage FC home game at The Lamex Stadium before Christmas and drop them at the KidZone located in West Stand Car Park - vs Exeter City on Saturday 16th December, 3pm KO Foundation Chief Executive, Joe Goude said: “It is great to be able to return with our annual request for support from our amazing fan base, to support those in our community who need a little bit of support at Christmas. We’ve been through a health pandemic, and the cost-of-living crisis that began last year continues to make it hard for all within our community, but particularly those that are already in a position where they are having to make difficult decisions about where they spend their money. “These types of campaigns not only ensure that those most in need get something that could

27

make the world of difference on Christmas morning, but also reinforce the message that no one in our community should feel alone and that we are all there for each other throughout the year, not just during the festive period. This is echoed by the incredible donation that our Supporters Association make to the Bluebell Children’s Ward at Lister Hospital, which will be taking place the week of Christmas and supported by players from both the men’s and women’s teams at the Club. “We’re all part of a Boro Family whether you

come to The Lamex on a matchday, attend a community session, know someone associated with the Club, or simple drive or walk past as part of your day-to-day life. If we can replicate the generosity and support that we’ve seen in previous years, I know that we can make a huge impact this Christmas and beyond.” If you’d like to learn more about the Foodshed, run by Stevenage Vineyard, and the work it does in our community please visit www.stevenage-vineyard.co.uk

Meet the boss

Andy Crosby joined the Valiants on a permanent deal in June 2021, after spending time supporting Manager Darrell Clarke at Vale Park during the latter stages of the 2020/21 Sky Bet League Two campaign. A defender in his playing days, Crosby made 715 career appearances scoring 43 goals, with his first foray into coaching coming in 2006 when he was named player-coach under Nigel Adkins at Scunthorpe United. In 2010 he was appointed as the Assistant

Manager at Southampton under Adkins. Crosby would follow Adkins as he took charge of Reading, Sheffield United and Hull City before separating from him, when Crosby made the move to the Northern Ireland Under-21’s where he was appointed assistant to Ian Baraclough. Crosby has played a central role at Port Vale since his permanent arrival at Vale Park, with both Manager Darrell Clarke and Director of Football Dave Flitcroft emphasising how important he is to the football club. In February of the 2021/22 season, Crosby took charge of the first team in the absence of Darrell Clarke who was on compassionate leave due to a family bereavement. Crosby led the team for 17 matches, winning nine and drawing four as helped the team to achieve a Play-Off finish. As an act of gratitude towards Crosby, Manager Darrell Clarke selected him to lead the team out at Wembley ahead of our PlayOff Final victory over Mansfield Town to secure promotion to Andy Crosby Sky Bet League One.

LATEST NEWS

It’s the FA Cup 2nd Round , and it’s Port Vale – again! We only played you guys six weeks ago, and a blistering 0-0 draw ensued. Really looking forward to this afternoon’s game, and hoping to see more than the 542 Valiant fans who came to our previous encounter. Always happy to break bread and share beer with our friends from the Potteries.

STANLEY MATTHEWS

Stanley Matthews was the manager of Port Vale in 1967. On February 7th 1967, he brought his team down to Broadhall Way to play in what was effectively a “friendly”, in support of a seriously cashstrapped Stevenage Town FC. George Curtis, the manager of Stevenage Town was a close, personal friend of Sir Stanley, and to this day, the gesture has never been forgotten. Mowlem Construction (now Carillion) kindly sponsored the game, which resulted in a 4-3 win for Stevenage. The 52 year old “maestro” graced our Broadhall Way turf for the full 90 minutes, effectively gliding over the infamous mud which the ground became notorious for. Over 2,000 souls witnessed Sir Stanley Matthews CBE in Stevenage that night, supported by O’Neill, Richards, Broomhall, Lintern, James, Gibbons, Mudie, Georgeson, Chapman and McKensie for Port Vale, and Ray Peacock, Peter Robinson, Hugh Pratt, Delvin Stevens, Ray Freeman, Colin (Paddy) Powell, Peter Walker, Robin Chandler, Johnny Brooks and Dicky England for Stevenage Town.

BORO BUSES TO BURTON AND BARNSLEY

Next Saturday (Dec 9th), Boro Bear will be boogying on down to Burton. Who of you will be joining him on the Boro Bus to the Pirelli Stadium? It’s a 10.00am departure from the Lamex at a cost of just £25 for members. We’ve Exeter at home the week after (16th), but the week after that (Dec 23rd) it’s our first ever visit to Oakwell, the famous home of Barnsley. The Boro take on The Tykes, deep in the heart of South Yorkshire on the Saturday before Christmas. Luncheon on bowl of pie and peas, or partake in a slab of Parkin. Whatever your pleasure, we’ll get you there for just £20 a member. We leave at 11:00am. “Ah tha comin?” CLICK HERE for details.

FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION (FSA)

Congratulations are in order to members the Official Accrington Stanley Supporters Trust (OASST) who have been awarded a King’s Award for Voluntary Service – the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK and equivalent to an MBE. Volunteers at OASST operate various projects such as an Accrington Market Hall shop, local foodbanks, social evenings, and a free children’s Christmas party alongside a wide range of fundraising events – and of course they run coach travel to away fixtures. And now the trust’s tireless work to strengthen the bond between the football club, its supporters and the local community has received Royal recognition. Peter Leatham, chair of OASST, said: “On behalf of our Trust Board, many members, and our forefathers in our supporters’ clubs, we are deeply honoured to be selected to receive the King’s Award for Voluntary Service.
