ood afternoon and welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Port Vale. Delighted to get the win at Bristol Rovers on Wednesday night, my only complaint being that, once again, I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the final whistle, when we could and should have been 3-0 up and comfortable. We’ve now progressed to the last 8 in the EFL Trophy and are just 2 wins from a Wembley appearance which, given our season, seems strange. Very welcome, but strange. Mind you…when you consider that 12 of our 25 games have been draws, with 8 of those 12 draws 0-0 and 3 of them 1-1, you can see that we’ve not exactly been prolific scorers this season…. That’s what GW is focused on in this window – we want to add substance to our striking and creative options and, whilst that’s not easy in our present position, I’m confident we’ll get the right players in and kick on in the remaining 21 games. Stevenage FC v Port Vale
I thought we were outstanding against Colchester; playing with 10 men for 70 minutes against a decent side is not easy and we did well to see the game out at 0-0. Against The Gas I thought we looked a very good outfit; confident, professional, athletic, assured. Each of those adjectives is, I think, a reasonable description of our performance and I’m sure the dressing room was a great place to be after that win. But today it’s back to the important stuff. We’re keen to finish the game at 5pm with 21 points and set ourselves up nicely for another home game here on Tuesday night – this time against Oldham. If we show the confidence and desire we showed on Wednesday I’d back us against any team in League Two. What’s needed now is fan power to help make home advantage count. Let’s hear you getting behind the lads and making the difference. Enjoy the match! www.stevenagefc.com | 7

MIND FOR BETTER MENTAL HEALTH
HAVE YOUR MATE’S BACK
W
e are Mind, the mental health charity. We are the charity partner of the EFL – you may have spotted our Mind squiggle on the back of the club shirts. Using the power of football, we aim to raise awareness of mental health, to help improve the approach to mental health in football through delivering training to clubs and to raise funds to deliver our life changing services. Our latest campaign ‘Have Your Mate’s Back’ asks fans to look out for their friends and check on their mental health. With 1 in 4 people experiencing a mental health problem each year, we all know someone who needs support. We want people to drop their mate a line, ask if they are ok and let them know they are there for them. It can make a big difference. As a demonstration of support for our campaign, we are encouraging everyone in the football community to wear their football shirt backwards, drawing attention to the Mind logo. Why not wear your shirt backwards today to show your support for better mental health in football? You can also show support and help raise vital funds by wearing one of our Mind Pin Badges, which Graham Westley is wearing in your club colours for today’s game. The limited-edition badges can be brought from our online shop or in your club store. Mind is a national charity with a federated network of independent, local charities. fter putting themselves in a strong league position 15 years ago Boro had lost and drawn their previous two over the New Year period and GW’s side needed a win in this one to make up for some lost ground. Alas, despite a brace from Anthony Elding, Boro failed to take all three points as York struck twice in front of a crowd of 2,044.

ON THIS DAY Saturday January 11, 1992 Stevenage 2 Yeading 2 Boro were firing on all cylinders in this superb Diadora League Divison One season and in a campaign in which they won 3/4 of all league games, this was unusual as they could only draw at home. A crowd of 737 saw Duncan Hardy and Steve Cox net for Boro and although they also fielded other big-hitters such as Richard Wilmot, Paul Bowgett and Martin Gittings, Cloughie’s side could not grab the win. FOUNDATION
tevenage FC Foundation in partnership with Mind in Mid Herts are using the power of sport to tackle mental health problems in the local community. Local mental health charity Mind in Mid Herts has been awarded funding by Sport England and the National Lottery to help people to try new sports and activities to help improve their physical and mental health. Through this work, Mind in Mid Herts will be supporting people experiencing mental health problems – such as depression and anxiety – to build their confidence to join in with a variety of activities, including sports clubs, yoga swimming, and in partnership with Stevenage FC Foundation, new Walking Football Sessions. Physical activity can play a vital role in the lives of people with mental health difficulties, reducing the risk of depression by up to 30%. Unfortunately, we also know that many people who do want to participate in sport are being held back by their mental health; whether that’s feelings of low self-confidence, exhaustion or fear of crowded spaces. Through the exercise sessions, Mind, Stevenage FC Foundation and other partners will be supporting people with mental health difficulties in the local community to enjoy the benefits of getting more active. Sharn Tomlinson, Chief Executive of Mind in Mid Herts said: “We are so thrilled to have been awarded the funding from National Mind and the English Football League to deliver the Get Set to Go program. The research is strong that physical activity improves people’s mental health and also that poor mental Stevenage FC v Port Vale
health effects people’s physical health. This programme is bringing mental and physical health together and part of the project is to raise awareness that we need think about both in a recursive way. What is also helpful is bringing people together to do something they all enjoy – making new friends is great for people’s mental health. We hope that the taster sessions will support people to have a go at something new. It may not be for everyone but you won’t know unless you try.” Hannah Marsh, Healthy Lifestyles Manager at Stevenage FC Foundation said: “It is a privilege to be in a position where we can we can help local people improve their mental health through the programmes that we run, where we take a focus on promoting positive health and wellbeing. The Get Set to Go programme is a fantastic example of partnership work between the Foundation and Mind in Mid Herts, giving those who may be suffering with mental health difficulties to access free, friendly exercise sessions that offer support to those who need it.” The Walking Football sessions will be starting at the end of January 2020, times and dates to be confirmed. For more details on the session, please contact Callum Kwasnik, Outreach Worker at Mind in Mid Herts on Callum.Kwasnik@mindinmidherts.org. COMMUNITY TRUST
S
tevenage Football Club are pleased to announce a fantastic new partnership with Stevenage Community Trust this season. The Trust has been chosen as their main beneficiary for the current campaign and the focal point of this project is a match on Saturday February 1 at home against Leyton Orient in which Stevenage will play in a specially designed Stevenage Community Trust kit. This will be a first for the club, they have never previously utilised their third kit for an outside organisation and this will provide massive UK-wide publicity for the Trust and for the activities which they undertake. Only 250 of these limited-edition shirts have been produced and they will be sold to raise funds for Stevenage Community Trust, with the profits made from the sale of these shirts donated directly to the Trust. Shirts worn by the players themselves in the game on February 1 will also be available as they will be auctioned off at the end of the season for supporters to bid for. Both parties are now calling on the people of the town, supporters of the Trust and the Boro to back this initiative in a number of ways - the simplest will be to buy a shirt to keep and wear it at the Boro!
Commenting on the project, Alex Tunbridge, Chief Executive of Stevenage FC said: “We are delighted to be supporting Stevenage Community Trust by raising awareness and funds through wearing our first ever third kit at our match against Leyton Orient. We hope the club’s supporters and members of the local community will show their support for the fantastic work the Trust carries out in our town by purchasing a shirt and supporting the campaign.” Sharon Brown, vice-chairman of Stevenage Community Trust said: “This link between ourselves and Stevenage FC shows just how powerful organisations and businesses can be when they work together for their community. The project to produce a third shirt is unique in the Football League and at a local level will go a long way to help our work to support charitable groups and individuals at greatest need in the town and the surrounding villages. We are grateful to the club for working with us in this groundbreaking scheme.” Shirts costing just £40 are available to purchase from the club shop. You can also purchase shirts using the following online club link.

SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION
LATEST NEWS WELCOME It’s really great to have The Valiants back here in Stevenage. It gives me great pleasure to welcome the committee members of the Port Vale Supporters’ Club to The Lamex. This afternoon, I dedicate the SA’s page to my old friend, Billy Bannister.
BILLY BANNISTER It is with much sadness that we heard of the passing of Billy Bannister. Billy joined Stevenage Town in November 1967, having been signed by manager Tommy Bickerstaff. His first game for the ”Stripes” was on November 14th 1967 away to Barnet. Despite at one stage losing 2-0, Stevenage went on to win the game with Billy scoring the winning goal in his debut match. His performance went on to make him an “ever-present” in Bickerstaff’s side, displacing Roy Cutler and making the no.9 shirt his own. Billy scored 20 goals (in all competitions) for the remainder of the 1967/68 season. Billy featured in Stevenage Town’s very last League game, a 0-0 draw away to Hillingdon Borough on May 11th and he was one of the eight ex-Stevenage Town players who followed Bickerstaff to Cambridge City for the 1968/69 season. On December 16th, Billy even scored the only goal for City in the game against Jimmy Briscoe’s newly-formed Stevenage Athletic. Billy was born June 20th 1948 in Seaham, County Durham. At 18, he joined Brighton and achieved 1st team squad status. His clam to fame was playing in front of 22,229 at the old Goldstone Ground against Notts Stevenage FC v Port Vale
County in a Football Combination fixture. Billy had also been with Bristol Rovers prior to his arrival at Broadhall Way. It was here in Stevenage that he met and married his wife Sue. They raised a family (Nicola and Stephen) and Billy went on to coach Stevenage Borough youth teams during the 1980’s, proving to be one of our best coaches during this period. Our thoughts and prayers are with Billy’s family at this time.

The Valiants were relegated to Sky Bet League Two in 2017 after finishing in 21st place, one point below Gillingham who avoided the drop. Since then, they have endured relegation battles
Vale witnessed a frustrating Christmas period, picking up four draws in their last six league games. They also suffered a home defeat for the first time this season at Vale Park after Walsall’s Elijah Adebayo stole the show with the only goal of the game. That spell did include a 2-0 win against table toppers Swindon Town however. The Valiants have also been dumped out of two cup competitions in the space of one week. After going behind away at Manchester City in the FA Cup, Tom Pope caused havoc at the Etihad after equalising in the first-half before being beaten 4-1. They also lost 3-0 to Salford in the Leasing.Com Trophy.

THE BASICS…
TOM POPE
STAR MAN… Tom Pope is no stranger to the Valiants fans and has faced up with Boro on many occasions, having first played for the club in 2010. He did leave for Bury in 2015, but returned two seasons later for his second stint. The striker has scored over 100 goals for Port Vale and was influential in their promotion campaign to League One in 2012/13, scoring 31 goals. The 34-year-old kick-started his career at Crewe Alexandra, but wasn’t offered a professional contract and was forced to ply his trade in non-league with Biddulph Victoria and Sunday League side Sneyd. He has also played for Barrow and Rotherham United.
THE GAFFER…
JOHN ASKEY
John Askey is the man in charge at Vale Park and replaced Neil Aspin who left the club in 18th place last season. The 55-year-old started his career at Port Vale but never made an appearance for the Club, whilst playing his whole playing career at Macclesfield Town having played over 500 games for The Silkmen - scoring over 100 goals. The former winger has had two spells at Moss Rose as a manager, but his biggest achievement came in his second homecoming when he guided Macclesfield to the National League title in 2018. by Taylor Catton
