It left Boro a point inside the play off zone with two games to go, the Valiants were 6 points adrift and the dream was all but over. DARREN ISTED

BORO
HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 21 AUGUST All in all, Boro’ come into today’s game with a pretty formidable record on this date in history. And it can either inspire you… or make you fearful that something has to give. We’ve played seven times in total; winning five and drawing two – conceding just once along the way! It started with a goalless draw at Sutton United on the opening day of the Diadora League Premier Division season. Most recently, another stalemate saw us pick up a point at the New Lawn in 2018. In between, it’s a run of wins – and an impressive one at that. Junior Samuels and Carl Alford got the goals as we beat Telford United in 1999 to make it three out of three in the Nationwide Conference. Two years on, it was two from two as two from DJ Campbell secured a two-goal victory away to Hayes. That’s a lot of twos. Both of those respective wins kept up unblemished starts for Boro’ at the time. Not that anything became of those campaigns in the end. So, a 100% record at this stage of the season is no guarantee of success. And perhaps that’s just as well after our 4-1 defeat on Tuesday night… Fast forward three years and we recorded our biggest-ever win on this date (so far, nudge nudge); slamming five goals past Accrington Stanley without reply. After two straight defeats at the start of the 2004-5 campaign, it was a stunning jump start to a season that’d ultimately see us get to the playoff final. So too was our 3-1 home win at the expense of Stockport County in 2010; our first-ever three points in the Football League, which came at the third attempt. Elsewhere, Lucas Akins’ goal settled matters on this date in 2012 as Boro’ picked up the points at Leyton Orient. And to end our round up of results on 21 August where we started; a goalless draw on our travels – like at Sutton in 1993
16
– as neither ourselves nor Forest Green could break the deadlock. But the most important lesson to take from here, maybe, is that nothing is decided this early on in the season – but there’s nothing wrong with being on the right path. 1993 Sutton United 0-0 Stevenage Borough, Diadora League Premier Division 1999 Stevenage Borough 2-0 Telford United, Nationwide Conference (Samuels, Alford) 2001 Hayes 0-2 Stevenage Borough, Nationwide Conference (Campbell 2) 2004 Stevenage Borough 5-0 Accrington Stanley, Nationwide Conference (Quailey, Hanlon, Goodliffe 2, Flack) 2010 Stevenage 3-1 Stockport County, npower League Two (Griffin 2, Bostwick) 2012 Leyton Orient 0-1 Stevenage, npower League One (Akins) 2018 Forest Green Rovers 0-0 Stevenage, Sky Bet League Two
Stevenage FC v Port Vale
YOU AGAIN? PORT VALE… If history tells us anything when it comes to the Valiants, it’s that our encounters – more often than not – tend to be tight affairs. Our goalless draw at Vale Park in February was the eighth time in 15 meetings to date that honours had finished even. But a 2-1 win in our home encounter last season tipped the balance otherwise in our favour; Boro’ on four wins, Vale on three. Hopefully we can repeat the trick today and put some daylight between our win counts. Our biggest wins against our visitors from Stoke-onTrent have actually come at Vale Park. Our 2-0 home win on 30 September 2017 is the biggest margin of victory we’ve enjoyed at the Lamex. Overall, we’ve had mixed fortunes at home – winning three, drawing two and losing once (in the 2019-20 season). Well, it’s technically two defeats. But we’re not counting our FA Cup Round
www.stevenagefc.com
One replay defeat in 2009-10 as we weren’t playing as equals back then. Not that we had to wait long, of course. It’s probably acceptable to regard our 1-0 home League Two defeat in January 2020 as the anomaly in our head-to-head form against Vale at the Lamex. Almost everyone beat us that season (well, not Cambridge United). But you’d also be wise to use it as a warning that we aren’t invincible against the Valiants on our own patch. And we wouldn’t want it to start becoming a familiar sight as we’ve still got a relatively decent record to protect at the moment.

ACADEMY
G
ood afternoon and welcome to the Lamex for today’s fixture with Port Vale. As you may be aware there is a lot more that goes on just up the road at our Shephalbury site than just our Academy squads. Below this we have a detailed Player Development Pathway which is a pyramid that includes 3 tiers with our Development Centre groups, our Advanced Development Centre & our Emerging Talent groups, all of these groups follow the same philosophy, coaching syllabus & playing style as all the academy teams as well as all the sessions being coached by young enthusiastic academy coaches who understand the values of not only the academy but the football club as a whole to ensure that we don’t just develop players, but people for the community as well. We pride ourselves on development of players, and try to push as many players through the pathway as we can, following a strict review and report process. Over the course of last season we saw over 25% of players in our Emerging Talent group appear in an academy fixture, these players managed to total 140 appearances between them which is the most players ever! This just goes to show the strength and the great work of everyone at the academy, especially in the pathway, and what it is doing developing these young players to give them amazing opportunities. Some of these players had the chance to play at Premier League clubs training grounds such as Chelsea’s Cobham training ground and Liverpool’s brand new academy base. We look forward to bettering this

again this coming season, which kicks off in September with new progressions and developments made to the pathway ready for this coming season. If you would like to know more about the pathway or register your interest please email Tomf@stevenagefc.com I hope you enjoy the game, make some noise, and COME ON BORO! TOM FARR – Pathway manager

WOMEN
I
t was a difficult start to the season last Sunday, as SFCW went down 0-6 in our first league game against QPR. With several key players missing from the matchday squad, SFCW never really took charge of the game and unfortunately started with a loss. The girls have been hard at work training this week to ensure that they will be ready for their next game on Tuesday 24 August under the lights. This will be our first home game of the season and we would welcome as many Stevenage FC fans as possible to be in attendance and support us. Our home games are played at the FA County Ground in Letchworth, with kick off on Tuesday at 19:45. Please do come and show your support, with season ticket holders getting in for free. In other news, First Team Manager, Karl Davy, recruited several more new signings; flying full-back, Ronnie Harrison joining from Charlton, attacking midfielder, Shakeela Hussain put pen to paper after impressing during open trials in addition to Jodie Southby and Ailish Straver who had both been training with us during pre-season. SFCW are also delighted to confirm that Lucy Webster will be the club captain for the 2021-22 season, as she steps up from her role as vice-captain from last season. Karl Davy had the following to say after confirming that Webster would be club captain; “Lucy has shown natural leadership skills since I’ve come in. She’s a Stevenage fan through and through. She plays with her heart on her sleeve and does everything she can to make the club a better place on and off the field, she deserves to lead this team in a new era”. Up the ‘Boro!

Stevenage FC v Port Vale
THE BOSS Darrell Clarke joined the Valiants in February of this year following a switch from Walsall. He had been at the Bescot since May 2019 and before that was the fourth longest serving boss in the EFL after a four year spell at Bristol Rovers which took in relegation to the Conference and then instant promotion to the league set-up. His playing career saw him play 159 times for his home town club Mansfield along with 127 appearances at Hartlepool before ending at non league Salisbury where he started his managerial career.
DID YOU KNOW? •H e was a Potteries legend and Port Vale also have a claim to fame with the great Sir Stanley Matthews as he once managed the Valiants. • Many lower division clubs cite reaching the FA Cup final years ago as a high point but Port Vale have the unusual fact that they were finalists in the Anglo-Italian Cup, losing to Genoa in 1996. • I t’s a record which may not be broken, the Valiants have spent 41
seasons in the second tier, more than any other club without reaching the top division. • At the planning stage Vale Park was intended to have an 80,000 capacity and to rival any ground in England. It opened in 1950 but with a capacity of half that. • Roy Sproson holds the record of 842 appearances for the Valiants, but longevity is a family affair as his nephew Phil clocked up 500 appearances, also in all competitions at Vale Park.

LATEST NEWS PORT VALE On behalf of the SA, I should like to welcome the players, the officials, and most of all the supporters of The Valiants, to The Lamex this afternoon. A special welcome to Mark Porter, my counterpart at Port Vale, and the rest of his Supporters’ Club committee who have made the journey from Vale Park.
UNIVERSALLY CHALLENGED Whilst writing these notes, I have one ear on Jeremy Paxman hosting University Challenge on the telly in the background. A question he posed to Reading University was about the latin motto of English football clubs – (i.e. What club has “Consilio et Animis” as it’s motto? Answer: Why, Sheffield Wednesday of course!). Now, did you know that Stevenage used to have a latin motto too? Oh yes we did. Let me know here at Lloyd@sfcsa. co.uk if you know it. Otherwise, I shall enlighten you in a future article.
INTER-CITY BORO Who of you reading this came with us to Bristol last Saturday, or to Bradford on Tuesday? It’s great to be back, isn’t it. Our next sojourn sees us sampling the delights of Walsall on August 29th. Come with us to the Bescot Stadium. Come see the amazing view of the M6 and the huge freight marshalling yard beyond. More importantly, get thee there for Revell’s Rovers. At £25 for members and £30 for nonmembers, the bus leaves The Lamex at 10:30. You can book online via our website or you can phone John on 01438 814285. Let’s get behind Alex and the lads – it’s going to be a great season!

FAN FOCUS BETTY VALE It gives me so much pleasure to introduce you to Betty Vale. As we’re playing “The Vale” today, I thought it would be appropriate. Stevenage owes so much to Betty and her late-husband Ken, that a book could be written. Ken was the club’s chairman from 1987 to 1993 and Betty was his able assistant. At one point, Betty used to run the tea bar here and the famous “Betty Burger” was the talk of the Isthmian League! There’s evidently something in the genes when I say that Betty’s daughter, Carolyne, runs the company that now supplies all the catering for Cambridge United. Sadly, Ken passed on three years ago, but Betty is supported by her four children, eleven grand-children and twelve great grand-children. Betty is a life member of Stevenage and attends whenever she can. Should you see her in the main stand, do say “hi”, and you’ll be assured of proper Yorkshire rapport.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
