henever times are tough, it’s always good to look back on a happier season. And what better booster than 1990-91. Was it really 30 years ago today that Boro destroyed yet another Herts rival with ease? Well the 4-0 thumping that ensued was on the cards. Cloughie had only taken the helm some few months earlier and his impact was immediate. Indeed Boro went into this game on the back of a run of nine wins and one draw from the previous 10 matches in the league, they were clearly the team to beat that campaign.
Saturday November 24, 1990
Vauxhall League Division Two North Stevenage 4 Berkhamsted 0
Two goals from Colin Cardines and one from Dave Brown saw Boro take a firm grip while sub Rob McComb came on with 10 minutes to go and added to the scoresheet. Perhaps the only disappointment on the day was a crowd of 452, good for that level but not for an ambitious Boro. And on the subject of disappointments Boro had also suffered cup reverses in the previous month when the admittedly tougher local rivals of Hemel Hempstead and Hitchin Town had stopped them claiming any silverware in the FA Vase and Floodlit Cup. Oh how times change! DARREN ISTED

WOMEN
We recently saw the return of the Women’s Football Weekend following its successes from the previous season. With an opportunity to capitalise on the international break in the men’s season, the FA announced that all FA WSL and FA WC fixtures would be broadcasted live. As a club, Stevenage FCW are very proud to support and champion equality, diversity and inclusivity and we fully supported this year’s Women’s Football Weekend. Whilst it was disappointing that we did not have a match to play, due to the current suspension of football from Tier 3 downwards, we celebrated the occasion by speaking to some members of our First Team and Development Team about their football inspirations, heroes and memories. You might be forgiven for thinking that the squad would be taking things easy during the current break in football, however, this is not the case. The squad (and staff!) have been put through their paces with a series of fitness challenges
www.stevenagefc.com
devised by our Fitness Coach, Laura Lupo-Gunn. With the squad divided into several teams and appointed a member of staff as a team captain, each team has been working hard on their fitness and accruing points through completing lockdown workout challenges alongside a weekly zoom fitness session taking place every Tuesday evening. Keep an eye on the Stevenage FCW Instagram page to see how the squad and staff are getting on and to see which team scores the most points at the end of the lockdown period. Although there are some dubious submissions of walks to accrue points from our more senior members of staff, morale, confidence and team spirit is at an all-time high and we are all looking forward to the return of football so we can start pushing on up the table. As a squad, your support is so important and the interaction of our fans does not go unnoticed. We need you to be our twelfth player as we look to kick on in the second half of the season. Thank you for your fantastic support so far!

ACADEMY A warm good evening to everyone, I want to firstly wish the gaffer and the boys the very best of luck for this evening’s fixture. It’s honestly been fantastic to be back here in familiar surroundings, in a somewhat different capacity being Foundation Phase Lead which is overseeing the u9-u12’s. It’s been a strange few weeks for everyone I’m sure, but it’s great to have the Academy back up and running and have all the boys in working hard and enjoying themselves again. Although I oversee those age groups, I take the u11’s personally and they’ve been absolutely terrific in both training and games. They’ve shown fantastic work ethic and eagerness to learn which is a pleasure to coach. We’ve picked up 3 wins out of 3 against MK Dons, Northampton and Gillingham respectively and deservedly so, the latter playing without a goalkeeper. The boys showed a good attitude as they had to take it in turns going in goal which showed togetherness and a desire to win. The u9’s 10’s and 12’s have also been very good in their application and desire to do better and be better in taking on information from all the coaches to progress. I’ve also been lucky enough to be working
www.stevenagefc.com
closely with Jorden, Ronnie and the u18’s the past few weeks to also help with not only their development but mine also. It’s almost given me the best of both worlds being able to bounce between the younger ones and the ones pushing to be professionals. The u18’s are probably the most honest group of players I’ve worked with, they all go that extra yard which is vital in football without having to be told. I’ve been so impressed with how they apply themselves day in day out, and although the results have not mirrored this, their performances over the last couple of weeks have been very impressive and now it’s just building on them to turn the results around. What’s most impressed me on my return to the club, is that the Academy is not results driven. Where it’s clear that we all want to win football matches, there’s a clear message that we focus on development and not results. Our Academy Manager Robbie deserves plenty of plaudits for this as it can be a long road especially when results don’t go your way, it can be easy to turn the focus. You only have to look at the last few years and the amount of players the club has produced. JAMAL CAMPBELL-RYCE – Foundation Phase Lead

CLUB MATTERS We welcome Port Vale to the Lamex this evening and it’s interesting to note that having first played each other in 2009, when paired together in the FA Cup, we have gone on to clash a total of 13 times since then. Indeed despite Vale winning two of our three FA Cup clashes, their 1-0 win back in January this year at The Lamex was the first time they have enjoyed league success against us.

Stevenage FC v Port Vale
Our clashes have come in Division One and Division Two and although no strangers to these leagues, Port Vale hold the record for the most seasons (41) in the second tier of the English game, without ever playing in the top flight. Their last season in the second tier ended in 2000 and since that time it has been 20 years spent between the bottom two divisions. In recent times the club has rebuilt and started to challenge once again, the purchase by current chairman Carol Shanahan in May 2019 leading to greater stability, although hopes of promotion last campaign were dashed when the season was cut short and Port Vale missed out on the Points Per Game (PPG) method. In this campaign October saw a run of three consecutive wins, over Oldham (2-1), Cheltenham (2-1) and Southend (2-0), but Vale also showed a fragile side with defeats to Cambridge and Carlisle. It has been a mixed spell of late. Prior
to the weekend the Valiants fell to home defeats against Scunthorpe and Tranmere although there was the mixed fortune of a 4-2 EFL Trophy win over Liverpool U21 before a shock 1-0 home exit in the FA Cup at the hands of King’s Lynn of the National League. Indeed it really has been a case of win or lose for the Staffordshire side who have drawn just one game (0-0 at Harrogate back in September) in a total of 18 competitive games this campaign.
THE BOSS
John Askey: Born in Stoke-on-Trent and with a youth career which started at Port Vale, Askey played more than 500 games for Macclesfield Town from 1984 to 2003. His managerial career began at Moss Rose as well where he had two spells, with the highlight coming in 2018 when he guided them back to the Football League. After a brief stop at Shrewsbury in 2018 which lasted little more than five months, he joined Port Vale last year.
WATCH OUT FOR
David Worrall: The 30-year-old has been a firm favourite with the Valiants crowd for the past three years, claiming the player of the year title last season and being named as their best winger for the 2010 decade. In a career which has seen in excess of 300 appearances across nine different clubs, the attacking midfielder has made an impact at Vale Park, signing a new two year deal in February. This campaign he has played in all but two games and although he has scored just once, his record for completing key passes is second to none.

COMMERCIAL As with every Club in the land, we’ve been starved of a vital income stream, after all, who wants to sponsor a match they can’t attend, hire an executive box they can’t access or sponsor a match ball that nobody will see? But we are ready for business. As soon as we’re allowed to reopen we will be there for you. Hopefully this current set of restrictions will have the desired effect and infection numbers will fall significantly
enough for us to be allowed to restart, most likely with a limited service similar to what was offered for the recent game against Grimsby Town with around 100 people being admitted to the North Stand, before a more general opening of the stadium as time goes on. LATEST NEWS
PORT VALE A big, warm Boro welcome to the players and officials of Port Vale to the Lamex on what will be a cold, autumnal evening here in our little corner of north Hertfordshire. Personally, I’m particularly looking forward to seeing Tom Conlon and Harry McKirdy again.
BABY BORO I am delighted to announce the latest member to the SA’s ‘Baby Boro’ scheme. She is Louise Auburn and is the new granddaughter of proud committee member Geoff Millman and his wife Belinda. Louise was born at the Lister Hospital on October 21st to parents Emma and Mervyn. On behalf of the SA and Stevenage FC, I’d like to offer my hearty congratulations to Emma and Mervyn on the birth of their beautiful, new daughter.
HOME-GROWN POLICY Did you know that the Yorkshire County Cricket Club was founded in 1863, and one of the primary rules of the club was that no one could play for Yorkshire who wasn’t actually born in the county. Back in 1939, the old Stevenage Town FC embarked on a similar policy of only allowing players into the club who actually came from around the Stevenage area. Whether this policy proved a success or not will never be known because of the outbreak of World War 2. Now, consider the current squad of our
www.stevenagefc.com
visitors this evening, Port Vale. Dan Trickett-Smith, Tom Pope, Alex Hurst, Tom Conlon and James Gibbons are all Potteries lads. Given that this season’s Valliants consist of a squad of 26 players, to have almost 20% of them ‘home-grown’ is something their fans can be enormously proud of. A cause for celebration in its own right. Coincidently, Tom Conlon’s great grandad and his great-great grandad both played for Port Vale too. Talk about ‘keeping it in the family’!
“FOOTBALL WITHOUT FANS IS NOTHING” The above quote (from the late Jock Stein) has a poignancy which deeply resonates, especially in these uncertain times. The Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association is endeavouring to embark on new initiatives so as to maintain a dialogue and a connection with all Stevenage fans - everywhere. Given that every other club is in the same position, I tend to keep a watching eye on what other club fan organisations are doing with their supporter base. The one club I do tend to benchmark ours against is Crawley. The reasoning behind this is because their history and demographic is so similar to our own. We were the very first ‘New Town’. Crawley was the second. So, what is the Crawley Town Supporters’ Alliance up to currently. Well, it probably won’t surprise you that they too have launched their own, new lottery scheme. Called the “Reds Rollover”, its objective is to fill the void of loss of income that their match-day raffle used to bring in. Just like ours. More ‘rival’ club initiatives in future editions.
