tevenage were looking for a winning return to league action as they sought to continue their run of three successes out of their last four games in the Conference. Graham Westley’s men returned to Broadhall Way after being dumped out of the FA Trophy at the fourth round away to Hornchurch. Boro’s visitors, Telford, were still marching on in the competition as they dispatched Weston-Super-Mare 4-2. In the end Telford got as far as the semi-finals. The opening half of this clash was largely uneventful as both teams struggled to break the deadlock. But with chances at a premium, the visitors

finally went ahead in the 56th minute, courtesy of Tony Naylor. The veteran striker, who was to retire months later after a 469 game career, decisively found the net for the Bucks. In the reverse fixture in late September, Boro strolled to a 2-0 win courtesy of goals from Bunce and Elding. This time Telford held on to the one goal victory and made it honours even. The visitor’s season ultimately fizzled out, they ended the campaign languishing in 12th, a position that spelled peril for the club as they folded shortly after due to financial troubles. HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 06 FEBRUARY
If Boro’ are to come out on top today, we’ll have to go against the prevailing trend for this particular date in the diary; the number of wins achieved trailing the number of red cards we’ve received on 06 February by three to two. First, the highlights – and we start in 1993 where Shaun Marshall’s goal was enough to secure three points at home to Chesham United. We now jump ahead 14 years after that for a 3-0 home win over Morecambe. That was an FA Trophy Round Four replay brought about by a goalless draw at Christie Park three days beforehand. It looks handsome written down, sure. But it did require an extra half hour to be played in order for Boro’ to come through the tie. Boro’ were also in FA Trophy Round Four action on this date in 1999. Luckily, a red card for goalkeeper Chris Taylor did not have any major repercussions as we earned a replay at Broadhall Way. Sadly, we’d end up losing that on penalties. A double dismissal blow befell us on this day

IT’S READING AGAIN…
Tonight will see the Royals pay a visit to the Lamex Stadium for the first time in more than six years. Since that goalless draw in the FA Cup Round Three, we’ve been to their place three times – losing the FA Cup replay and our League One encounter earlier this season. Sandwiched in between the two is our 2-1 Carabao Cup victory last season. How can we forget our FA Cup win at the Madejski Stadium in late January 2011 too? But the stark truth is that Boro’ are looking to achieve a ‘first’ – and that’s to beat the Royals on our own turf. Granted, we’ve only had two opportunities so far, both as the lowerleague opposition. Still, not a habit we want to continue…
BORO’ AT THIS STAGE…
Gameweek 29 With 28 matches now under our belt, it feels like this League One campaign is starting to get long in the tooth. But we still have just under 40% of the current season to go! Lots still could happen between now and the end of April too. In contrast, there were only four fixtures for us left to play when we reached this point of the 1980-1 United Counties League Division One season. Our record to this point 43 years ago was strong; 20 wins, six draws and two defeats (not to mention the 93 goals for!). Had it been three points for a win back then, we’d be on 66 points. And yet it still pales into comparison when up against the 1990-1 season. We were two-thirds of the way through that campaign after 28 fixtures; records tumbling as we went. But, actually, the 28th league outing of that season threw up a defeat – only our second all season to that point. As for this season’s squad, it has been our strongest League One campaign to date. So far. No matter what occurred at the weekend against Blackpool, we’re still ahead of our like-
for-like points haul in the 2011-2 season – when we made the playoffs come the final reckoning. Mind you, what was enough back then is not guaranteed to be the same now.
ON BOTH SIDES…
To play today?: At the moment, there is a grand total of three players to have turned out for both sides tonight – and who are currently on the books at one or the other. That said, we’ll only possibly be seeing one of them tonight; Boro’ signing a certain Terence Vancooten from Reading way back in 2017. Nesta Guinness-Walker is the second – but can’t play today due to the terms of his loan deal. Goalkeeper Jökull Andrésson is the third, but he’s on loan at Carlisle. Best of the Rest: Well, the list of historic players to feature for both us and the Royals is quite the mixture. There’s the recent likes of Jake Taylor and Jobi McAnuff, together with older names like Kevin Dillon and Ray Houghton. There’s a bit of a globetrotting feel to the list too – mainly from Kiwi striker Tim Stevens, who came to us in 1997 after a trial at Reading failed to land him a deal.

I’m delighted to welcome back Glenn Quirke to the team as our new full time safeguarding lead. Throughout the recruitment process, Glenn demonstrated a range of knowledge, experience and expertise that will prove to be a valuable asset to both the Academy, and wider Football Club. This is an important role and another exciting appointment to our academy at this exciting time for the club, as we progress working with committed staff, players, and parents ensuring football is safe and fun for all. Glenn has worked as an Academy Operations & Safeguarding Officer with over 15 years of experience and is passionate about safeguarding, football, and inclusion. Stevenage Football Club is committed to being inclusive and providing a safe and positive experience for everyone involved in activities at the club. The club recognises its responsibility to protect its members by embedding Safeguarding practice through proactive work, training, and the provision of clear policies and guidance. tevenage FCW moved into seventh place in the ERWFL Premier Division after knocking AFC Dunstable for six in a highly entertaining league fixture at the Herts FA County Ground. A first half Amy Makewell
hat-trick was equalled with a brace from Kelsey Millen and a Sophie Hendy single in the second half to ensure Haile Richard’s goals would remain a mere consolation for the visitors from Bedfordshire. The start of the game was slow with no chance of note for almost a full fifteen minutes as both sides felt their way into the contest. Chloe Gunn began her mission to score – and a duel with the right hand goalpost – as she sent a shot from the edge of the box just wide of the upright. This was immediately followed by a Hannah Nebbitt free kick that fell kindly for Grace Brooks in the box, only for the defender to send over from close range. Makewell attempted to turn provider for Gunn in the next episode of the Gunn-Fire, but once again the ball flew narrowly wide. Halfway through the first half, Makewell opened the scoring. Hendy began the move, showing some excellent hustle to win the ball high up the pitch. Lillia Dempsey had a sight of goal blocked and rolled the ball to Makewell who shifted onto her right boot and sent a precision shot off the post and in. Gunn had two more efforts – one with each foot – that saw both whizz past the same post which appeared to be living a charmed life. With ten minutes of the half remaining, Boro’ saw the opportunity to double the advantage. Dempsey again cut into the box and attempted a cross as Georgia Miller dropped to the floor and handled the ball. Billy Houghton pointed to the spot and Makewell converted high to the ‘keeper’s left for her second of the game. Dempsey had a chance of her own held as she attempted to recreate her goal against Needham Market, while Gunn finally saw a shot on target, but held well by Isobel McDonald. On the stroke of half-time, Makewell saw her attempt at a hattrick from close range slip wide. Within seconds, Kelsey Millen was chopped down in the box and Makewell changed direction to net her third of the game and fifteenth of the season. The second half saw Boro’ extend their lead after eight minutes played, following an effort that was sent wide by Hendy. This time, Millen worked hard down the right, after receiving the ball from Emily Schofield, to send an inch perfect cross for Hendy to nod back across goal and into the net.

It was looking good for Boro’ but after a quadruple substitution, Richards found herself running almost the width of the pitch to send a left footed shot past O’Brien. It could have sparked a revival but the game petered out for twenty minutes, until Millen was brought on to the left. Within seconds she received a sublime through ball from Hannah Bodily. Millen slotted the ball home, although McDonald got a hand to it and the four-goal cushion was restored. With a minute to go of normal time, Richards collected the ball and rounded O’Brien for a second goal of the game, Boro’ replied
immediately from the kick off as Chloe Gunn went direct to Millen who collected and shot early to catch McDonald at her near post. Rebecca Edge could have added to the tally deep into time added on, but her first effort was blocked and the second was sent wide. Nonetheless, Boro had completed the mission for the day and had fired themselves to within six points of second place. “We’ve played some good football. We’ve been doing that for a while, but the results are starting to match the performances and I am really pleased for the girls with all the hard work they are putting in,” Boro boss David Perry said afterwards. With unbeaten Real Bedford on the horizon, more hard work will be required – something this side has never shirked away from. Meet the boss
After working as an assistant all over the world, including in Greece, Russia, and Azerbaijan, Ruben Sellés took the reins at the Select Car Leasing Stadium ahead of the 2023-24 season after spending three months managing Southampton in the Premier League. Born in Valencia and a boyhood fan of football at the Mestalla, Sellés finished a master’s degree in Sports and Physiology before qualifying for his UEFA Pro Licence at the age of 25. Rubén soon embarked on a career in coaching the beautiful game, initially in Greece with Aris Thessaloniki but soon returning to his native Spain to take a role with Valencia. In 2018, the Spaniard joined the Danish club Aarhus as assistant to David Nielsen and, having helped the Whites qualify for Europe, Sellés helped the club achieve its best league finish for more than 20 years. Last summer, Sellés arrived on UK shores for the first time and settled quickly into Premier League life on the south coast as assistant to Ralph Hasenhüttl at Southampton. Having made his impact quickly at St Mary’s he
Ruben Sellés was given the caretaker manager role when Hasenhüttl departed in November, presiding over a 1–1 draw and a penalty shootout win over Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup. He was entrusted with the manager’s hotseat once more following the exit of Nathan Jones in February and he won his first game at the helm - a 1–0 win over Chelsea coming courtesy of James Ward-Prowse’s winner on the stroke of half-time at Stamford Bridge. He was intially announced as manager on 26 June 2023, albeit subject to a successful visa application. This was soon approved, with Rubén officially taking the reins on 14 July 2023.

LATEST NEWS
The supporters of Reading are most fortunate in having an incredible organisation behind them. It’s called the “Supporters’ Trust at Reading”, or STAR for short. STAR was set up in 2002 and is currently chaired by Sarah Turner with a board comprising some fifteen members. Sarah’s team clearly have their work cut out given the current issues at their club, and the Supporters’ Association of Stevenage FC sincerely hope that a resolution is forthcoming soon. We wish STAR and the fans of Reading FC the very best of fortunes in the current perilous climate at the Madejski.
ARCHIVES
Some of you reading this article may be surprised to learn that Stevenage maintained a close working relationship with Reading as far back as the early 1970’s. A youngster called Johnny Harley was released from Cambridge United and transferred “on a free” to Stevenage in 1969. So good was Johnny’s first season at Stevenage, that he went on to Reading for a fee of some several thousand pounds – Stevenage Athletic’s very first ‘sell-on’. Stevenage’s Roy Mackenzie (goal-keeper) also trialled with Reading at this time – such was the strong ties between Jim Briscoe (Stevenage manager) and Jack Mansell (Reading’s manager).
FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION (FSA)
Latest news from the FSA is commentary about the swathes of empty seats in the home ends at Craven Cottage the other weekend when Fulham hosted Newcastle United in the FA Cup. This was because of a boycott by Fulham fans as the issue of ticket pricing at the club came to a head. Protests
by fans originally started back in November when Manchester United came to town. Tickets for the Newcastle game started at £40, with no sale window or reservation options for season ticket holders. Travelling Newcastle fans applauded their Fulham counterparts, expressing their support at the boycott. The Newcastle United Supporters’ Club went on to say “£40 for a Saturday night game that is also on TV is crazy and takes advantage of supporters.”
50-50 TICKETS
As part of the SA’s drive to raise funds for the Club, the Stevenage Football Club Supporters Association has a well established half-time draw, more commonly known as the SA’s 50/50 draw. • Tickets cost just £1 • 50/50 ticket sellers are situated all over the stadium, close to the turnstiles • 50% goes towards the Cash Prize, whilst the other 50% goes towards the SA. • Draw made at half time, usually by the referee • Everyone over the age of 16 welcome to take part
INTER-CITY BORO
So, we travel away on the next two consecutive Saturdays. On February 10th (this coming Saturday) we go to Port Vale. Departing The Lamex at 10:00am, the cost is just £25 for members and £30 if you’re not. The week after (Feb 17th), we go to Derby County’s Pride Park stadium. As with the Port Vale bus, it’s £25 a member seat and a 10:00am departure again. We’re nothing if not consistent! Get thee there with Boro the Bear and join the club – our club.
