PHIL WALLACE

Good afternoon and welcome to the players & officials of Salford City. Our visitors sit in seventh place and - like us - have taken ten points from their last six games. We’ve put in some great performances over the last few games, and I thought a win at Carlisle would have been a fair outcome, but it wasn’t to be. We had the better chances but just couldn’t take them so settled for a draw. We’re all feeling that positivity that comes from winning the two games leading up to that long trip to Carlisle. We’re delighted to be back at The Lamex and looking forward to a cracking game against one of the big spending, highly fancied teams. Every game is a cup final now as we do everything we can to claim one of the three automatic promotion places. The players and management have had a great week on the training ground and we’re hoping they can deliver a win to keep up

the pressure on teams around us. Off the pitch we are slowly building our new admin team under new CEO Mike Pink. We have corporate deals wrapped up for new shirt sponsors and we’ll be announcing that shortly, along with a reveal of our new 2023/24 home and away kits which we’re hoping will be with us in June. We’re in the process of arranging refurbishment of all our pitches – the stadium pitch, the Academy pitch at Shephalbury and the four training pitches at Bragbury End – to start in May and that triggers the usual round of maintenance work at all three sites. It’s a busy time yet everyone has their eyes on the results and the league table as we head towards an exciting climax to the season.

If you’re going to the game, let’s hear you really get behind the lads.

Enjoy the match

Our first very warm welcome goes to Isabelle Edmends. Isabelle is 7, lives in Stevenage and attends Featherstone Wood School. She lists her hobbies as dancing, playing football and squishies and her favourite Boro players are front two Danny Rose and Luke Norris. Living in Sandy and attending Laburnham School in the town, Callum’s hobby is football, playing for Sandy Tigers and his favourite Boro player is Danny Rose. Last but by no means least its a big Boro hello to Samuel Edmends. Samuel is 11 and attends Barnwell School. FROM THE ARCHIVES

Boro boss Gary Smith was left purring while Blades manager Danny Wilson bemoaned the fact his side had saved all their errors for one match as Boro recorded one of their greatest ever league wins.

And of course somewhere hidden in that post match analysis there was also a good Boro performance which was headlined by a Dani Lopez hat-trick. The Spanish striker had only been recalled from a loan ahead of the clash and made an early impact netting from inside the box.

He then made it a quick fire treble following a pass from Gavin Mahon for the second and a well drilled shot from the

edge of the box for the third.

Shellshocked United stemmed the flow but Lucas Akins made it four and sealed what was remarkably the Blades’ first defeat in eight games.

Afterwards Gary Smith said: “It’s a wonderful result, and of course Dani Lopez’s performance will make the headlines and rightly so.

“Today was really the highlight of the season at home - terrific result and a great performance, four goals and a clean sheet. “We’ve seen today that he [Lopez] has got bundles of ability, he’s got two very good feet. And if you can get him in and around that penalty area what he will do is he’ll work an angle and get a shot off.” DARREN

FIRST GAME? YEAR, SEASON?

It took a while for me to catch the Boro bug consistently, I remember big moments like Wembley and Kidderminster Promotion at Old Trafford. But didn’t go consistently until 15/16, but would say the love at first sight game was the FA Trophy final v Kidderminster.

WHICH SECTION OF THE GROUND DO YOU NORMALLY WATCH THE MATCHES FROM?

Middle of the east, bit lower down, immerse myself in the atmosphere in one of the best stands still existent in the Football league. Can’t see myself changing anytime soon.

BEST MEMORY/MEMORIES OF SUPPORTING BORO?

I could name so many just from this season! Aston Villa away I doubt will ever be beaten for me. Two goals in the last five minutes at Villa Park vs Unai Emery’s Aston Villa to win the game, I’m still not over it now. But even

the 100th minute goal away at Walsall was special.Overall Newcastle, playing at White Hart Lane, beating Portsmouth 3-0, Luton in the last minute. So many special memories. Even away trips with good friends like winning away at Morecambe away in the last minute remain special.

FAVOURITE ALL-TIME PLAYER (AND WHY)?

John Mousinho was the first player I loved. He just was everywhere and could do any job you wanted him to do. And quite often did it all. Was the centre of the team and scored one of the biggest goals in Boros history. Shoutout Mark Roberts for obvious reasons and shoutout to Mr Underrated Darren Murphy.

FAVOURITE CURRENT PLAYER (AND WHY)?

Reevesy is a special footballer. Watch Reeves and you’ll watch the game. Huge miss whenever he’s not playing. Run huge games for us repeatedly. You can’t not love Mr Big goals Jamie Reid either. Danny Rose also incredibly enjoyable as he knows how to win and annoys everyone not on his team.

WHY DO YOU LOVE BORO?

Two main reasons. There is nothing like going all over the country (and Jersey) supporting your local team, laughing with your best mates and feeling like you belong and feel invested in a team who are doing you proud. Secondly the feeling of being the little guy and punching above our weight, the siege mentality. It’s just something I love being a part of.

FAVOURITE BORO SHIRT?

This is tough. I really do love this seasons kits, especially the purple. The 20/21 away kit was lovely. I love the 14/15 Maroon away kit but I have a retro DJ Campbell Boro yellow collared top, 2001 third kit I believe. Id probably edge towards that if anything.

ON THIS DAY: 25 MARCH

Busy, busy, busy; late March is a time when matters are starting to become settled and games in hand are made up in earnest. On 25 March, Boro’ have played 12 times – just twice in the Football League, and in successive years on three separate occasions. The stories to be told? Well, there’s no shortage of them…

Let’s start with a 3-2 win at home to Barnet on 25 March 2002. The 20012 season was the first in which we’d met the Bees on an equal billing. This match was due to take place live on Sky on New Year’s Day; a week after we’d won 3-0 at Underhill. But cold weather put paid to that. And what a treat the cameras would ultimately miss out on.

If nothing else, the game is best remembered for Jean-Michel Sigere’s mercurial goal in which he deftly lifted it over a hapless Barnet defender, before drilling home from the edge of the area. By the by, Siggy also saw red in that game. It was also a lot closer than needed. Boro’ were 3-0 up on 58 minutes. By 75 minutes, the Bees had their two back.

The following year, Boro’ saw off Kettering Town at Broadhall Way. Just three months before, the Poppies had beaten us at Rockingham Road to put us bottom of the table. Now, however, GW had come in and steered us to the safety of mid-table. Our guests ended

HISTORY

the campaign bottom and would be relegated.

And, back in 1996, Boro’ would lose on this day to a Hednesford Town side enjoying an impressive campaign. It was a blow to our title hopes and two days after an inexplicable FA Trophy exit against Hyde United. It was the first of three straight away days too; a run that yielded three points. Next time we were at home? Easter Monday against Woking. All in all for 25 March, Boro’s return is seven wins, two draws and three defeats. At home, it’s five wins from five.

IT’S SALFORD CITY AGAIN…

Boro’ are on the road next weekend; travelling up to legit bogey side Northampton Town. So, it’d have been nice to have a “safe” game this week. Sadly, that’s not the case. Salford City are themselves staking a similar claim; arriving this weekend with a record of six wins from our seven previous encounters. And clean sheets in five of them…

MAGIC MOMENT:

07 May 2022 – Sky Bet League Two

shortly after the interval; Nozza’s powerful effort going in off the underside of the crossbar. Not that having the two-goal ad-vantage meant one-way traffic. Salford reduced the arrears on 66 minutes through Corrie Ndaba’s header. Thankfully, Elliott List put the game to bed with 10 minutes left and to secure a historic first win against Salford City.

ON BOTH SIDES…

We’ll keep this brief this week… because there’s not much to report. Carl Piergianni is most obvious name on this list; spending three years with the Ammies between 2017 and 2020. To our knowledge, there are only three other names to mention: Bruno Andrade and Harry Worley are two, while George Boyd completes the set. Having started out with us, our wing wizard bookended his career by calling time after a brief spell with the Ammies that ended in June 2021.

It’s not a hard choice to pick out our magic moment against the Ammies. Our 4-2 win on the last day of last season stands out as the only time we’ve been successful against them. It’s also a result that accounts for 80% of the total number of goals we’ve put past them so far.

For Boro’, it was the perfect way to sign off from a troubled campaign. But it didn’t start off well; Salford taking the lead after 14 minutes when Christy Pam couldn’t hold a shot and the rebound falling to an opposition forward. We were back on terms nine minutes later when Jamie Reid slotted home after Boro’ laid siege to the Ammies’ goal. Reid doubled his tally and put us ahead on 43 minutes with a bit of a beaut, before Luke Norris got in on the action

Good afternoon and welcome to the Lamex for today’s fixture with Salford City. It has been a busy period for us at the academy, and the Foundation Phase has been no different. The fruits of the changes we made at the start of the year are starting to show with the technical and physical gains from our new Futsal programme which have been clear to see in training and the schoolboy fixtures on a Sundays. The boys that have participated have been loving it and we have now started to implement Futsal fixtures with local Futsal teams in and around Stevenage. In line with new changes to our Under 8s programme, enforced by the PL & EFL, our pre-academy games programme is now in full swing. Our young players have already created some fantastic memories playing at some of the best facilities in the country with them travelling to Wolves, Sheffield United and Leicester to name a few. These games allow us as coaching staff to get a really good eye on the next up and coming superstar that we can offer ready for next season and

we are delighted with how this group is unfolding.

Lastly we are inviting local grassroots football clubs to take part in our fourth annual Lamex Cup tournament. Taking place at the home of Stevenage Football Club - The Lamex Stadium –between Friday 5th and Sunday 7th May 2023, The Lamex Cup is the most prestigious six-a-side grassroots football tournament in Hertfordshire this summer. With competitions from Under 7s to Under 13s, The Lamex Cup is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your team and take part in a memorable day at the home of Stevenage FC.

WOMEN

Shianne Swarres MIDFIELD

Shianne has made 39 appearances for the club and has scored 5 goals whilst receiving just one yellow card.

Two of those goals came last season against London Seaward in the League and Hackney in the FA Cup. This season, Shi has made 15 appearances with 3 goals and an assist to her name, not counting two beauties in preseason! Her competitive goals came against Wormley in the County Cup and Needham Market and Royston in the league.

Swarres dictates the play whenever she is on the pitch and has an eye for the spectacular. Her goals are always a contender for Goal of the Month! This was recognised last season as Shi was voted both the Player’s and Supporter’s Player of the Year.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN OUTSIDE OF FOOTBALL?

I chill with my friends, go for walks and I work a lot, coaching kids quite a bit and I run my own football team so that takes up a lot of my time as well!

DID YOU DRIVE INTO TRAINING AND IF SO, WHAT MUSIC DID YOU PLAY?

Yes! It is a mixture to be fair! Sometimes a bit of old school or a bit of Ed Sheeran or Drake, but mostly old school!

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO GET TO TRAINING?

It takes 40-45 minutes – Wednesday is a bit longer!

WE’RE GOING FOR DINNER – WHAT ARE YOU HAVING?

Nando’s is a good shout to be fair. Love a Nando’s – filo pitta and halloumi!

24 STEVENAGE FC V SALFORD CITY FC STEVENAGE FC

WHAT DRINKS ARE YOU ORDERING?

BEST PLACE YOU HAVE BEEN ON HOLIDAY AND THE PLACE YOU WOULD MOST LIKE TO GO TO?

Today we are celebrating the winners of our Boro Bear’s Book Club Competition! After over 150 entries, our four winners Noah, Jessica, Poppy, and Eliza are finally being presented with their prizes after writing a short story about Boro Bear’s Holiday. Their stories included Boro Bear meeting the Chicago Bears, flying in a bath, going on safari and meeting Santa!

Scan this QR code to read the winning stories.

A huge thank you to Ken Follett who has joined us today to present the prizes and has personally included book tokens in the winners goody bags! Ken Follett is one of the world’s best-loved authors, selling more than 188 million copies of his 36 books. Follett’s first bestseller was Eye of the Needle, a spy story set in the Second World War. In 1989, The Pillars of the Earth was published and has since become Follett’s most popular novel. It reached number one on bestseller lists around the world and was an Oprah’s Book Club pick. Its sequels, World Without End, A Column of Fire and The Evening and the Morning proved equally popular, and the Kingsbridge series has sold more than 49 million copies worldwide. Follett’s new book, The

Armour of Light, will be published on 26th September and completes an eightvolume cycle of novels that chronicle the history of Western civilisation for the last thousand years. Follett lives in Hertfordshire with his wife, Barbara. Between them they have five children, six grandchildren, and three Labradors.

“I am delighted to support Stevenage F.C. Foundation’s work to help local children live an active, healthy and positive life. Books allow us to travel the universe, use our imagination, and see the world in the eyes of someone different from us. As part of Boro Bear’s Book Club, hundreds of junior Boro fans submitted tales about Boro Bear’s travel adventures. Congratulations to the winners and I hope all Boro fans continue to read, write, and tell great stories for everyone to enjoy.”

Thank you to everyone who entered and thank you to our partnered schools who supported the competition again this year, making it a huge success! We look forward to reading more exciting stories next year!

FORM GUIDE

It feels like every home game for Boro is a cup final, but this afternoon’s visit of Salford really is a crucial and unpredictable clash.

Both sides have 10 points from their past three games, with Salford in third and Boro in fourth in the form table courtesy of the Ammies’ 15:9 goal difference. They have thumped Mansfield for five and hit three against Doncaster, Crewe and Newport in that run to rack up the goals. But perhaps the achilles heel is at the back where they do leak a fair few, their 4-3 reverse to Crewe a case in point.

Salford sit in the final play-off place in the league, some eight points behind Boro and with a game more played. But it is only a mid season drop in form which has set them back, they began the season with three straight league wins, including a rare 1-0 defeat for Boro back in August.

In the cups Salford were thumped 5-1 by Bolton in the Carabao Cup and lost 3-0 in a replay at home to Peterborough.

MEET THE BOSS:

Neil Wood was appointed as Head Coach in May 2022, his first senior appointment in the EFL after eight years at Manchester United. During the last three of those Neil was Head Coach of the Under-23s, winning promotion from PL2 Division 2, reaching the UEFA Youth League Quarter-Finals and pushing on 17 players to make their first team debut for the Old Trafford club.

As a player, the Stretford born midfielder came through the United academy and had loans at Burnley and Coventry City before moves to Blackpool and Oldham Athletic where a serious injury curtailed his spell. After overcoming injury, Neil played over in the Bosnian league before returning to the UK and moving into coaching with Aston Villa, eventually returning to United.

ONE TO WATCH:

Scottish midfielder Stevie Mallan signed a two-year deal with The Ammies in June 2022 after returning to the UK.

The 26-year-old had spent the last season and a half in the Turkish Super Lig with Yeni Malatyaspor, after leaving Hibernian in January 2021.

Born in Glasgow, Stevie is the fourth generation of Mallan to play football and started his career with St. Mirren. He made over 100 appearances for The Buddies before joining Barnsley in 2017, but he moved back to Scotland a year later with Hibernian.

Long range goals and set pieces have become a trademark for the midfielder, who showed glimpses of his potential in pre-season.

Previous Clubs: St. Mirren, Barnsley, Hibernian, Yeni Malatyaspor.

LATEST NEWS

WELCOME

Today I wish a warm welcome to the fans and supporters of Salford City FC. I confess that I don’t know much about the organisation representing the fans of Salford, but (in my research) I do note that the Salford City Supporters Club (SCSC) are members of something called the Internet Football Association (IFA). This was all new to me, and I thank the SCSC’s Facebook page for bringing this to my attention.

INTER-CITY BORO

On Saturday April 1st there is a train strike. Yes, I know it’s April Fools Day, but the fact remains . . . On Saturday April 1st, the Stevenage “Six Hills Army” also goes to Sixfields. Northampton is our destination. “Cobblers”, I hear you say – and you’d be right! £20 gets you there and back in the comfort and safety of the Boro Bus. Departing Broadhall Way at 12:00 noon, we need as many of you as can make the journey for this one.

Given the likely congestion on the road to Northampton, the Boro Bus is by far the best way to get there.

Go to the SA’s website page to book your tickets now: CLICK HERE

Advance Warning: There are then only four more away games (after Northampton) for the rest of the season. These are to Hartlepool on Easter Monday (April 10th), to Mansfield on Saturday April 22nd, to Swindon on April 25th, and to Barrow on May 8th. Be sure to book early for these vitally important games. Details in the forthcoming programme v. Colchester on April 7th.

RAY PEACOCK

Ray Peacock was the probably the greatest goal-keeper ever to play for Stevenage Town FC. He was something of a club legend back in George Curtis’s team during the 1960’s. Ray

currently lives in Milton Keynes and this afternoon he’ll be somewhere on the East Terrace with his son. If you see him, be sure to say “hi” – he’d welcome the chat.

THE BROADHALL WAY PITCH – 1967

Fifty-six years ago, the pitch at Broadhall Way was in a really terrible condition. It was so bad, the groundsman took to using it to grow a crop of potatoes. He used to have a stall outside the ground to sell his produce to raise funds for the club! By heck, times were hard.

It took many years to resolve the problems with the drainage of the old pitch. In fact, it wasn’t to improve for another twenty years or so. Compare to the amazing condition of the playing surface this afternoon to the paddy field in the accompanying (staged) picture. How times have changed – for the better.

FINALLY

My grateful thanks to Pete Johnson for recently providing me with vital copies of paperwork relating to the old Stevenage Athletic. Pete’s been a fan of Stevenage longer than I have (!)

If you have anything worthy of appearing in the club’s archive, then do contact me here at Lloyd@SFCSA.co.uk
