THE CHAIRMAN

G

PHIL WALLACE

ood afternoon and welcome to the players, and officials of Salford City. Our visitors have started their second season in the EFL after being promoted from the National League and have made some strong signings as they hope to win promotion to League One. Having come into the EFL from the Conference ourselves and going up to League One the very next season, the momentum created throughout the whole club – in fact, the whole town – from those winning times will never be forgotten. The fans and everyone involved with Salford must know what that feeling is like and I have nothing but admiration for the way their owners have funded a small club and steadily improved the infrastructure of the club at the same time – as indeed we did once we’d achieved EFL status. That EFL status was nearly lost season as we got almost everything wrong. We signed the wrong players at the start of the season and once we’d made those commitments for 12 months it’s hard to change them. Events off the field made a mockery of trying to build team spirit and unity, but at least we know what not to do now. Looking back, it wasn’t hard to see what was wrong but it was really hard – nigh on impossible – to put it right, given contractual situations. We got lucky and we survived. Lesson learnt. Coming into this season we were able to reshape the whole Club. Alex Revell is completely in tune with what we want from everyone at the club and is the most enthusiastic supporter of our new DNA. The fact that we only kept 4 players from last season says it all about what we thought of our collective spirit and togetherness last season. We now have a fresh start and have been very

www.stevenagefc.com

careful with our signings, making sure that team spirit and good characters came very high on our list of priorities when recruiting players. We’ve got 4 points from the first 3 games. We’re all a little bit disappointed with the 2-1 loss at Bradford last week, but the lads and management had a lot to contend with; no training since Wednesday, positive covid tests, the cancellation of the coach and hotel on Friday at the last minute, sitting in the car park Friday waiting for Covid tests and an early start Saturday morning all meant we were likely to be below par. Not so today – we’ve had a great week with Alex, Lennie Lawrence and Mark all working with the lads who will be absolutely rearing to go. We’re keen to get that freshness and intensity back today and start making a positive impact on the season. Enjoy the game and don’t forget to watch us on the live stream!

the Boro. This was the half season of the Teddy Sheringham reign and after a fanfare from the national media everything started to head south. Ahead of this match Boro were on a run

of three straight defeats, indeed they had only won twice in 11 league outings. Already out of the League Cup, the Cumbrians came down smelling blood and in a close game they held their nerve. Boro could have won it, they squandered a penalty when Brett Williams saw his shot saved and then fell to a sucker punch as the visitors clinched it with eight minutes to go. DARREN ISTED

ood Afternoon. Strange times in football and I know the majority will be reading online rather than in the stands cheering our team on this afternoon. Pre season has been different, but at the same time really enjoyable and it’s great to have football back. We started Stage 1 training back in August, which included small groups of training between myself, Ronnie Henry and Robbie O’Keefe. As a staffing group we felt this was more beneficial compared to the ‘normal’ pre season couple of days where players just get tested so it was nice to have the footballs out from day one. The physical side was excellently delivered by Dave Bass. Our league season has started well opening the season with a 2-2 draw to Cambridge United. We then followed with victory against Luton Town in the EFL Cup which is always a nice moment. We then beat last seasons’ champions Peterborough United.

20

Last Saturday we were brought back down to earth with a defeat to MK Dons . Three players who have been excelling in recent games were selected to travel to Bradford City away in Alex Revell’s First Team squad. They were second year Scholars Mackye Townsend-West & Yasin Arai as well as first year Max Granville. They would have gained huge valuable experience being around the squad. In last Tuesday night’s victory against Southampton U21’s in the EFL Trophy we were proud that 15-year-old Samuel Tinubu was included in the First Team squad. This is a great testament to our Academy who have all worked tirelessly in achieving our goal of promoting young players to the first team squad. I was fortunate to spend the evening watching the game with a very proud mother and family members. We have real high hopes for Samuel and his future career alongside many other players within our Academy. Enjoy the stream! Come on Boro! JORDEN GIBSON

n Sunday we had our first home game of the season at Letchworth County Ground. We welcomed Wimbledon Ladies, a side that is a very well established and well organised team. We knew we were going to be in for a tough game before kick-off. We seemed to hold them at bay for the first 20 mins without really putting into practice the things we’ve been working on so it was a fair start from ourselves and I hoped we would grow into the game. Unfortunately the end result was against us, as it was the week before, but in comparison to the two performances there were lots more positives this week. But we don’t want to hide the fact we have a lot to work on still and are still a way off where we want to be.

www.stevenagefc.com

We have a relatively young and new squad so if we keep making improvements week by week then I’m confident the we can start picking up points. Last week the squad had a really good evening spent at the Lamex, the main purpose was for Joe to relay all the new Covid legislations and practices, but it also worked out well as a team bonding session. Something that was my main objective going into the new season was to build a new culture and having time spent together as a squad away from football is only going to help. Thanks again. WELCOME

11th on the PPG method. There was a little more success in the cups as Salford did make the final of the EFL Trophy although of course this year it did not take place due to the coronavirus. This season Salford have started steadily with two draws and an away win in EFL action. After a 2-2 opening day draw at home to Exeter they then thrashed Grimsby 4-0 away before a 0-0 stalemate against Forest Green on Saturday. They have also notched their first EFL Cup win with a penalty success over Rotherham before a second round exit at Everton.

CLUB MATTERS Salford’s remarkable rise continues and many at Moor Lane have high hopes that this season will see them make further progress up the leagues. Boro fans won’t want to be reminded of Salford’s opening game in the EFL, the hosts took their time but coasted to an easy 2-0 win over a toothless Stevenage. This set them on the way for a good start to life in the EFL although a drop in form saw them eventually finish a disappointing

24

Stevenage FC v Salford City

THE BOSS Graham Alexander Alexander has enjoyed an excellent two years at the helm of Salford. Since taking over in May 2018 he guided them out of the National League and into the EFL at the first time of asking, thanks to a penalty shoot-out success over Fylde in the play off final after a draw. His 11th place finish last term had given full credence to his managerial credentials in a career which started back in 2012 when he took the top job at Fleetwood. There he guided the Highbury side from Division Two into League one although a poor start in 2015 cost him his position. Less than a year later and Alexander was in the Scunthorpe hotseat where he narrowly missed taking the League One side into the Championship. Although placed fifth at the time, Alexander parted company with the Iron in March 2018. His playing career has seen a remarkable 833 appearances for four clubs with more than 100 goals scored. Alexander started his career with

Scunthorpe before moving on to Luton. He made little over 100 appearances for each before playing 352 times for Preston in his first spell. After a 118 game spell with Burnley Alexander finished his career back with PNE. He also made 40 appearances for Scotland.

WATCH OUT FOR Ian Henderson The front man has caught the eye for the Moor Lane side - grabbing headlines as he netted a hat-trick in the 4-0 romp at Grimsby. Now 35, he is enjoying a renaissance with Salford, the prolific striker scored 112 times in 297 appearances for previous club Rochdale across a seven season spell. Henderson also lists Norwich, Luton and Northampton among a host of other clubs played for.

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION

LATEST NEWS

T

his week the Supporters’ Association launches its weekly lottery. Committee member Andy Mugridge, step forward and take a bow. Andy has worked relentlessly on this initiative and the fruition of his efforts saw the launch of his brainchild earlier this week. Administered by Unity, the scheme is designed to recognise the short-fall in income which we usually received from our match-day 50/50 ticket sales.

CLICK BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION

Here’s what it entails: • £1 per entry • 50% of every £1 goes to the SA with the other 50% going to Unity and split between admin and prize fund • Weekly Draw that’s drawn every Friday • Pay by either Direct Debit or Debit Card • Four prizes up for grabs: - 6 number match = 1st & £25,000 - 5 number match = 2nd & £1,000 - 4 number match = 3rd & £25 - 3 number match = 4th & 5 entries in the next draw It’s really easy to subscribe, and for just £1 a week you’ll be supporting the Club in these difficult, challenging and unprecedented times - as well as the SA. For details, click on the link to the right. My appreciative thanks to Andy for getting this off the ground. Let’s all make sure his efforts are recognised and the new SA Lottery is a great success. My thanks also to Boro fan and supporter, Dale Allardyce. Dale was once actively involved in the editorial and publication of the match-day programme here at Stevenage (back in the 80’s). Recently he has donated his back catalogue of all his old programmes, enhancing my ability to conduct accurate historical referencing of the club. A very welcome gesture Dale, from a grateful recipient. As we embark on our 11th season as a club now established in the Football League, it’s vitally important we remember and recognise our history. As custodians of such material, we owe it to our descendants. LLOYD BRISCOE SA Chairman
