THE CHAIRMAN

PHIL WALLACE

G

ood afternoon and welcome to the players and officials of Salford City. Our last game of the 2021/22 season could not come soon enough for me! To secure EFL status by having two teams worse than us over 46 games is not how I saw the season going. We had enjoyed a decent run at the end of the 2020/21 season and we started very well this season early on. Then the wheels fell off sometimes you do not know why it has changed. Perhaps a shift in style from management, perhaps injuries, perhaps loss of form, perhaps a number of things. But it resulted in me deciding to change management in November and being prepared to give the incoming management the players they wanted to climb the table. In January it seemed to have worked, but then once again the wheels fell off and we went into a dismal run of results. Changing managers again in March was not an easy decision for me to make. It is public knowledge that I wanted to bring Steve Evans and Paul Raynor into the Club in November, but that wasn’t possible for a number of reasons. I honestly thought in March that we - and by that, I mean myself, management and players - had made a collective mess of this season and that we were destined for relegation. Even though I cannot affect games, I can affect everything else and therefore it is my responsibility. All of us have endured a season of anger, anxiety and to a certain extent, shame. I have felt along with every fan and I apologise to each and every one for putting us through these last seasons of - let’s call it - ‘nonentertainment’. www.stevenagefc.com

I will do everything possible next season to work with Steve, give him the tools to do the job and create a new season of excitement and pride. We have a solid, stable club and, within our resources, new funds will be made available to bring us success. Let’s close the season with a win and I hope to see you all back again next season!

STEVENAGE

75TH ANNIVERSARY

A

t the end of 2021 Stevenage reached another milestone in its distinctive journey. As the very first of the British state-sponsored New Towns to be designated immediately after the second world war of 1939 to 1945, Stevenage achieved national and international fame. It may have been the first new town to be named officially, but it started life slowly and uncertainly before shooting towards its target size of 60,000 in the 1950s and 1960s. It is now an established community of approaching 100,000 and with a substantial catchment area for its many services and facilities across northern and eastern Hertfordshire. The new town programme of various Labour and Conservative Governments was scaled by drastically in 1976, effectively bookended by Stevenage in the beginning and Milton Keynes some twenty years or so later. New towns have always had their supporters and detractors. Perhaps what matters most is that those

10

Stevenage FC v Salford City FC

who actually lived in Stevenage and other new towns liked living there. Moving to Stevenage took some courage, and reflected the aspirations of the pioneer residents, their children, and today their grandchildren. The new town gave many people opportunities to get on and make a better life for themselves that would not have been possible if they had stayed in London. Of course as the town has grown, so has the influence of football in its history. From Stevenage Town, to Athletic, football played a big part, but it was always the dream of ‘Stevenage for League Football’ from Jim Briscoe which drove Stevenage Borough on from its founding back in 1976. After a few inauspicious years playing at the King George Playing Fields, Boro started life in the United Counties League back at Broadhall Way in 1980 and they have maintained that home for 42 years now. From non-league glory such as the Newcatsle FA Cup run and the Conference title, to the eventual success in 2010 and the finding of a home in the Football League, Borough has seen it’s

www.stevenagefc.com

own history inextricably tied to that of the town itself. The club is proud to be part of the very fabric of the town and to be featured in a recent book charting the history of the town, and a look ahead to regeneration and what promises to be an exiting future. k, so it’s no secret that when we dip into our archive we look for happier times. Perhaps it’s fitting that with Salford we have chosen this game, against this team, at this point in history. Let’s wind the clock back little over two years. Boro were set to face a Salford side they had always lost to (and it’s no spoiler here to say that we always have, 5 games now in total). It was a game which came as Boro stared relegation in the face as the drop seemed ever more inevitable. And of

Saturday February 15, 2020

Sky Bet League Two

course it was at a time when Covid was starting to gain more and more publicity a month later and the programme would be at a standstill. To the game then - and what is there to tell? Despite batting hard in shocking conditions it was Salford who claimed the first half, Brando Asante heading home past Farman on the half hour for the lead. Graham Westley (yes it wasn’t a dream, he did come back) rolled the dice in the second period and Charlie Carter came close, but it was to be yet another fruitless day for Boro against the Ammies. BORO

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 07 MAY The end of another season can be accompanied by a wide range of different emotions. Sometimes, we have reason to be upbeat and celebratory. Others, it’s a case of despair and dejection. And let’s not forget those campaigns that come to an end in a haze of indifference; asking the question ’when can we get to the beach’? For Boro’ this season, there’s a palpable sense of relief; our League Two status firmly assured after our home win over Tranmere Rovers two weeks ago. So, there’s nothing on the line on this final day of the season… and the beach awaits. Before on this day, the worst sensation we can claim to have is that one of indifference. Our 2-0 defeat at Stamford on 07 May 1983 saw us end in 12th position; our hosts finishing third that term, albeit hardly within touching distance of the two sides that would go on to create Rushden & Diamonds ahead of them. And what of the 2016 trip to The Crown Ground? Well, Darren Sarll had already comprehensively ensured our League Two survival after taking over the reins from Teddy Sheringham. Rocking up in 18th position at the final whistle, a 0-0 draw in Lancashire was notable for the fact that we had denied our hosts the automatic promotion they craved.

20

Accy would go on to fall short in the play-offs too. Of course, there has been delight on this day too. A bumper Broadhall Way crowd of 3,000+ witnessed Boro’ claim the Diadora League Premier Division trophy in 1994. The weather wasn’t exactly superb, but our on-field performance did much to warm the cockles as a fellow Borough – Harrow – were seen off with consummate ease. A ding-dong day on 07 May 2011 saw Boro’ go into a home clash with alreadypromoted Bury with a play-off place very much up for grabs. Our fortunes ebbed and flowed that afternoon. But it was a rare, yet crucial goal from Ben May just 15 minutes from time that secured a 3-3 draw and the allimportant point that set us on course for Old Trafford. The rest, as they say, is history… 1983 Stamford 2-0 Stevenage Borough, United Counties League Premier Division 1994 Stevenage Borough 3-0 Harrow Borough, Diadora League Premier Division (Simpson, Smith, Crawshaw) 2011 Stevenage 3-3 Bury, npower League Two (Laird, Reid, May) 2016 Accrington Stanley 0-0 Stevenage, Sky Bet League Two

YOU AGAIN? SALFORD CITY All things must pass. Not our words, but those of George Harrison. And we can only hope the former Beatle has got it right on that score, because our record against the Ammies is dismal. Since they broke into the Football League in the summer of 2019, we’ve notched up five encounters – and all five have gone in the wrong direction. Our 2019-20 season opener saw us travel to their place for a fixture that got the Sky TV treatment. The Ammies eased to a two-goal win and, well, it pretty much set the tone for our campaign. By the time the return fixture came round in February 2020, we were so far below the relegation line that it no longer looked like a line but a dot on the horizon. The Ammies won that day by one goal to nil. Being saved from relegation didn’t inspire a change of fortunes as far as Salford City were concerned, however. On 03 October 2020, we recorded a

www.stevenagefc.com

second straight 1-0 home defeat. Our second visit to the Peninsula Stadium on 10 April 2021 saw us do something we’d never done before against the Ammies – and that was to score a goal. Still, it was not enough to halt our losing streak. Bringing us right up to date is our trip to Greater Manchester earlier this season. You guessed it: same outcome, home win. And, again, it was by a solitary goal. Again, however, we drew a blank. And that’s no good when the oppo aren’t. But there’s perhaps a sense that a carrot is being dangled in front of our eyes. Apart from that first-ever meeting, our margins of defeat have always been by one goal. Maybe, as an end of season treat, the philosophy of your friend and mine – George Harrison – will ring true? And, in doing so, maybe we’ll finally take a point or three off the Ammies? By Pete Hayman courtesy of boroguide.co.uk

ACADEMY

G

ood Afternoon and welcome to the last game of a long season! It has been a tough season but the Gaffer and his players got us over the line. Thank you! Let’s enjoy this afternoon and go out with a bang, good luck to all involved and enjoy the game. This season has been testing at times and this afternoon is an opportunity for us to reflect on the progress we have made and from Monday, we will then begin the preparation for the new season. As you would have seen in our recent advert, Matteo Brunelli our lead physio is departing the club, Matteo has been nothing but professional since he walked through the doors on his first day, he is without doubt a very good physio who will go on to do very well and he leaves the academy leaving some of us upset but also very pleased for him. I would like to personally thank him for his service and dedication to Stevenage FC during the last testing couple of years. Chris and Ronnie have already begun the preparation for the new season by inducting the new intake of Darnell Bailey, Elliott Champness, Rylee Mitchell,

Ehy Harrison, Tyrique Tekasala and David Hicks as they had their League Football Education (LFE) Induction on Tuesday evening. Gavin Williacy from the LFE providing players and parents a greater insight to the education side of things whilst Chris gave them a detailed outline of the football provision. All the staff have worked tirelessly over the last season to ensure the academy continues to grow and be better year on year and my sincere thanks to every single one of them for their co-operation and efforts throughout. However, a HUGE thank you to all our parents that have supported the players this year, they have done some mileage this season and without that support we can’t provide additional games against the likes of Man City, Liverpool, Swansea etc, hopefully the weather is nice, the Boro win and we can all enjoy a well deserve drink. I am sure there will be lots happening over the summer month, but one thing is for sure, we are in the Football League next year! Come on Boro. JORDEN GIBSON Academy Operations Manager

WOMEN

SEASON REVIEW It has been a difficult season for the club as we suffered relegation from the FA Women’s National League to the Eastern Region Women’s League for the 2022/23 season. By our standards, we started off poorly – there is no denying that – with a run of 5 straight defeats and a change in management was needed. It took us until the sixth attempt to win our first game of the season courtesy of a rocket from Louise Godden away to Enfield Town, as (at the time) Interim First Manager, Fadi Mazloum clocked up his and the team’s first three points of the season. From there, the team improved with each game as the squad stabilised and quality was added with Mazloum being appointed as fulltime First Team Manager. Under the management of Mazloum and Assistant First Team Manager, Dave Perry, the team started to enjoy their football again and were back playing with a smile. It is our aim to bounce straight back up to the National Leagues at the first attempt. Whilst the league campaign was disappointing, we had a lot of joy in the cup competitions. We progressed to the Second Round proper of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup before narrowly losing to Loughborough Lighting in the league above. It was a heroic cup run and one that as a club we are proud of. Next season we will be looking to go one

www.stevenagefc.com

better and progress through to the Third Round. The crowning moment of our season was to be crowned the Hertfordshire County Cup Champions – a competition that we are very fond of! For the past six seasons we have made the final, winning on three occasions and runners-up on one occasion. The past two COVID-19 affected seasons we made the final but the games were not played. Our aim next season will be to retain the trophy. As the season ends, there will be some departures from both the playing squad and behind the scenes staff. Stevenage FCW would like to thank Phil Woolger, First Team Goalkeeping Coach and Sam Piggott, Strength and Conditioning Coach for their efforts this season as they depart the club. Stevenage FCW will also be saying goodbye to a man who has worked with the club for 18 years and coached over 160 female footballers in that time; our U23s Manager – Dave Potter. Dave has been with the club from the very beginning and has overseen many changes. On behalf of everyone at the club, we would like to say a huge thank you for your years of unwavering service. You have single handed changed the lives of many female footballers in the local Hertfordshire area. You will be sorely missed. We look forward to seeing you next season. Come on you ‘Boro!

ith today being the last game of the season, the Foundation’s Football Development Officer, Melissa Edwards, would like to reflect on a fantastic season and say thank you to the staff that have all played a vital part in the success of our matchday fan engagement operations. Through our matchday experiences, we have been able to deliver 28 mascot packages, receiving feedback that has been nothing short of fantastic. Feedback such as “it was the best experience of my life!” and “he still has a smile from ear to ear” are incredibly rewarding to hear. A total of 32 Silver and Gold Matchday Packages were delivered, whilst 43 Bronze Packages saw a whole host of local grassroots teams invited down to watch games for free. In total, through these Matchday Packages we’ve had more than 2,700 people attend the Lamex Stadium

and enjoy a highly memorable experience. That’s in addition to the hundreds of other youngsters who have enjoyed our Kids Zone pre-match throughout the season. Special mentions have to go to Lucy Webster, Leon O’Brien, Dani Cook, Lucas Murley and Brandon Grimes for their efforts behind the scenes, working on Kids Zone, Mascot Packages, Matchday Packages, Half Time Challenges and any other tasks that the Foundation were asked to do. Their efforts have been pivotal in ensuring that the Club engages with its community as much as possible on a matchday. Finally, a massive thank you to the staff of Stevenage FC for all their help and to all the participants on our projects in what has been a very enjoyable and rewarding season for the Foundation. CLICK HERE FOR THE COMPLETE SQUAD LIST We welcome Salford to the Lamex today for a game which few thought would have nothing riding on it. The Boro story is well documented but the Ammies are disappointed to come to Hertfordshire four points outside the play-offs and thus unable to extend their season. An exciting 2-2 draw with play-off rivals Mansfield on Monday ended their hopes of a tilt at League One,

32

but the damage has been done in the last few months with a series of inconsistent results. Of course Salford put Lancs rivals Oldham down two weeks ago with that remarkable 2-1 win at Boundary Park, but recent defeat to Bristol Rovers and a draw with Barrow means five points which could have put them well into the mix have gone begging and we will both be preparing to face each other in season 2022/23.

DID YOU KNOW?

•T he Salford nickname of the Ammies stems from a name change in the 1960s when they switched from Salford Central to Salford Amateurs on their rise in the local Manchester leagues. • I n May 2019 Salford reached the Football League with a 3-0 National League play-off final win over Fylde. Just a year later they were due to face Portsmouth, again at Wembley in the final of the EFL trophy, but the game was postponed due to COVID for almost a year until Salford beat Pompey on penalties in March 2021 after a 0-0 draw.

Stevenage FC v Salford City FC

ONE TO WATCH Jordan Turnbull is a defender who also knows his way to goal. He has enjoyed a career which has taken in Swindon Town in two spells, Coventry, Partick and Northampton. He signed for the Ammies in July 2020 on a two year deal and was on target in the 2-2 draw with Mansfield on Monday.

THE BOSS Salford City signed Gary Bowyer on a two-year deal to become manager of the club on a permanent basis in May 2021. He arrived in the previous March on a short-term deal from Derby County Under-23s and inspired The Ammies to 20 points from the final 11 games, earning the Manager of the Month award for April 2021 too. His second season in charge has been a similar tale as Salford have been contenders throughout at the sharp end of the table but in the end have just missed out in the final shake up. Bowyer, who is the son of Ian the former professional player, played more than 50 times in a career which included Hereford and Rotherham. He has managed at Blackburn, Blackpool and Bradford ahead of his current role.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION

LATEST NEWS SALFORD On behalf of the SA, I should like to welcome the players, the officials, and most of all the supporters of “The Ammies” to The Lamex this afternoon. I’m not personally aware of any formalised supporters club or association of Salford City FC, but nonetheless welcome you all to our little corner of Hertfordshire.

SA PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD I should like to take the opportunity to personally thank committee member Andrew Mugridge for arranging and organising this season’s Player of the Year awards. This has been a most challenging year not only for the club, but also the Supporters’ Association. With a number of long-standing SA committee members resigning, Andrew has stepped up to the plate to take on the arduous role of secretary, transport organiser, events management and even having inside (intimate) knowledge about Boro Bear (!) Andrew, my most grateful and sincere thanks to you.

GOVERNMENT FAN-LED REVIEW The Government announced on April 25th that it would endorse the findings of the recent Fan-led Review and implement all of its recommendations – including the establishment of an independent regulator. No exact timeframe was given for implementation; however, a white paper is expected in the summer, meaning legislation could be delayed until 2024.

Lucy Powell MP fumed, saying “there’s no dressing up that this announcement will come as a massive disappointment to fans across the country. “After a government review and many previous promises to legislate, this announcement of a further consultation later this year, and a delay to legislation until at least 2024 is a kick in the teeth to proud footballing communities across England.” A predictable note of discord came from the Premier League who, in a statement on their website, said they would not accept an independent regulator. “We welcome the clarity from the Government about their position,” they said “And are committed to working with them during this next phase of consultation, although we will continue to maintain that it is not necessary for there to be a statutorybacked regulator.”

MESSAGE FROM THE SA CHAIRMAN Once again, a dramatic end to the season has seen Stevenage survive to live another day as a member of the English Football League. I think I speak on behalf of the members of the SA when I say “thank you”. Thank you to our squad of players who left it a bit late, but pulled it out of the bag right near the very end. Thank you to the management team, and to Steve Evans for his ability to motivate the players he inherited. Thank you to Phil Wallace, for keeping our club where we belong – in the EFL. And finally, thank you to each and every one of our supporters, without whom we would simply not have a club. Thank you. As someone very close to me was wont to say, from time to time – “Stevenage for League Football” LLOYD BRISCOE Chair - Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association
