ost of the football world decided that our untimely defeat on Tuesday spelled relegation for our club. My job was to return and make a positive difference to a difficult league position. 12 games later, I haven’t achieved that yet in results terms. Although, I have made important changes which will bear fruit. In the big picture, Tuesday did feel like being knocked to the floor in a boxing match. It was co-incidence that it was the 30th anniversary of Buster Douglas hitting the canvas in his fight with Mike Tyson. As Douglas rose from the floor and knocked out Tyson in round 10, we have to do the same. We are a small club and we are wounded. But we are a fighting animal. It is not about the size of the dog in the fight, it is about the size of the fight in the dog. We have 9 out of our final 12 games against bottom half clubs and some great high-pressure head to heads in there. It’s in our hands and there to be done. Today we play another tough opponent but I saw a lot of good in our first half up at Bradford as we earned our 1-0 lead. We built on Elliot’s goal at Cambridge to score four and we need to remember that. It is good though that we are now creating point-winning positions through goals. We just need to finish jobs off. How I see it is that we can accept everybody’s negative view on our situation. We sit in the National League as it stands. So, we have to use our 13 games to win a promotion. I know and you know, that we know how to do that together. We have to unite, we have to believe, we have to decide. All

our best teams were decided on what they were going to do. Our current players can be heroes too. There are very good people in our dressing room. There are men there that I trust; I trust that they care, I trust that they can do the job, I trust that they respect the pride that you all have in Stevenage and I trust that they are driven by reasons to succeed. Every single one of us needs to remember what Stevenage has proved before. That it can achieve and every single one of us needs to take on his/her responsibility. We can earn Football League status again as we did in 2010 with that win at Kidderminster. The opportunity will inspire some and scare others. It is up to us all to embrace the challenge, and up to me to take on the moment, back the men and win games now. Stand shoulder to shoulder with each other as we step on and let’s play for our lives. These are the times where men and mice get separated. Let’s show the ‘Buster’ in us all. Onwards and Upwards. www.stevenagefc.com | 5

ood afternoon and welcome to today’s Sky Bet League Two fixture against Salford City. I would like to extend a first time welcome to Salford City’s players, supporters and directors to The Lamex Stadium. Today marks an historic day in the club’s history as we welcome our North Stand Bondholders to the game, to celebrate the opening of the new North Stand 76 Lounge conference and bar facility. The opening of the 76 Lounge marks the completion of the stand and the end of a very lengthy process of hard work, determination and a never say die attitude. Whilst everyone involved would have loved to see the stand’s completion on time, due to a variety of unexpected and unforeseen reasons this hasn’t been the case. That said, what we now have is a fantastic facility equipped with a modern bar and state of the art conference and banqueting space. This week has seen the launch of 76 Events, our new events company which Stevenage FC v Salford City

will oversee the facilitation of celebration, conferencing, remembrances and match day events at the Lamex Stadium. We all know the vision to build the North Stand is one that the Chairman Phil Wallace has had for many years and it is fantastic that today that vision has been achieved. This would not have been possible without the support of the North Stand Bondholders and on behalf of the Club I would like to thank you all for your help in making the vision both a reality and a legacy. On the pitch we all know where we are, 13 cup finals remaining to secure our EFL status. During my time at Newport County AFC I witnessed one of the EFL’s greatest escapes of all time. During that period of time there was one key component, togetherness. I have highlighted the qualities of hard work, determination and a never say die attitude which helped us complete the North Stand and all of these will also be needed. However, it is togetherness which will be the special ingredient we will need to secure our status. Enjoy the match! www.stevenagefc.com | 7

t was 15 years ago when Boro were getting up a head of steam in their bid for the Football League and Scarborough came to town. In front of a crowd of 1,728 Boro, featuring Alan Julian, Jon Brady, George Boyd and Anthony Elding just edged past the visitors with the winner coming from Darryn Stamp. Little over two years later Scarborough FC, who had been formed in 1879, were no more, the club being wound-up to be replaced by Scarborough Athletic FC.

ACADEMY

I

t has been a great few weeks in the Academy with some really positive performances and progressions. Starting at the top we have continued to improve week on week and last weekend a mix of U16s and U17s travelled across the county to take on Watford and came away with a 2-0 victory. Not only the result but more so the performance was really pleasing with the players displaying a real identity in how we play that suggests we are getting closer to where we want to be. Further down the line our ‘U15’ squad travelled to Ipswich Town and came away 5-2 winners in the Floodlit Cup. What delighted us the most was the individual performances from within this group, we had some real standout, eye-catching performances and to top it all off we finished the game with 2 x U13 players and 4 x U14 players on the pitch which again underlines the great strides we are making. It was not so long ago that we were playing teams like this and Stevenage FC v Salford City

they would be fielding teams against us a year younger in order to make the games more competitive! Finally we then travelled to Spurs last weekend with a mix of U13 and U14 players and came away with a very convincing win. Once again individual performances delighted the coaching staff and showed once again how far we have come. To spectators and parents who watch our games the noticeable difference is how athletically and technically better our players are becoming. This has been, in no small part, due to the outstanding ground work done by the Lead Phase Coaches Jorden Gibson, Jimmy Martin and Ieuan Lewis and our own Athletic Development Coach, David Bass who between them have devised a really detailed and coordinated approach to the long term development of our young players. Enjoy the game !

WOMEN

S

tevenage FC Women manager Mark Dicker puts the spotlight on two more players from the squad.

Name: CHARLOTTE RYAN Nickname: CHAR DOB: 29/11/1995 Occupation: RESPIRATORY PHYSIOLOGIST Preferred playing position: CENTRE BACK Season Apps: 15 Joined Stevenage FC Women: 2018 Previous Clubs: WATFORD Char is a player who is very highly regarded and respected throughout the club with the staff and players. In Char’s 1st season with us we had to use her in positions she probably wasn’t too keen on, her natural position was centre midfield but she slotted so well into the defensive line we haven’t moved her since. As a defender Char’s reading of the game is superb, that with her playing and technical ability it’s a great combination. She has really struggled this season with an ongoing injury and she is pushing herself through the pain barrier week in, week out. She doesn’t want to miss a minute of football and that’s testament to her as a person and a player. Hopefully for Char we can look to assist her in playing pain free ASAP.

Stevenage FC v Salford City

Name: CARA BRECKENRIDGE Nickname: CARS DOB: 31/10/1990 Occupation: SPORTS COACH Preferred playing position: CENTRE MIDFIELD Season Apps: 15 Joined Stevenage FC Women: 2006 Previous Clubs: WATFORD Cara is a player that every manager would want in their team, her attitude and her professionalism are 100%. Cara had a pretty bad injury a few years back which kept her out of the game for a long period, when she came back to full fitness she was playing for the Development side. That was until I recalled her to the 1st team at the start of this season and she has been there since. Cara’s technical ability in centre midfield is exactly what we need; she also has a brilliant footballing brain which makes her outstanding in her positional discipline. What we can try to add to Cara’s game now is goals, when she does chip in with the odd goal they are always memorable.

SA COMMITTEE Your SA committee met last week to consider a number of significant issues. Prominent amongst them was the extent of support for the buses we arrange to away fixtures. At late notice, we have necessarily had to cancel travel arrangements to several matches this season - all due to lack of support. The numbers of fans travelling indicates that our current efforts are unsustainable. The committee recognises the merit and value for providing safe, efficient and direct travel for our supporters to away games and have agreed to facilitate buses to the remaining matches which involve Crawley, Crewe, Morecambe, Oldham, Macclesfield and Carlisle. The committee will re-visit this matter again in the close season and make its recommendations known at the AGM.

RUN OUT MUSIC Joe Headland and Dr Chris Stride of the University of Sheffield have been in touch, wanting to know what music Stevenage runs out to - and why. They’re compiling an academic paper on football history and this is one aspect they’re particularly interested in. Coincidentally, I too undertook a similar survey with colleagues on the Football Supporters Association about five years ago. From Everton’s “Z-Cars” theme to Leyton Orient’s “Tijuana Taxi”, it’s a great Stevenage FC v Salford City

topic of debate. Why do Chelsea run out to Harry J. All Stars “The Liquidator”?

AWAYDAY On Saturday February 22nd, we travel to Crawley - the 2nd New Town after Stevenage. Let’s make sure we all get right behind Graham and the team at Broadfield for this one. Cost is just £20, whether you’re an SA member or not, and the bus leaves Stevenage at 11:30am.

CLICK HERE to book your coach seat at our eShop. Or phone John Carrol on 01438 814285 after 6:00pm.

WELCOME

in the Football League in the club’s history. The Ammies have seen a huge upturn in fortune ever since the Class of ‘92 became majority shareholders of the club. After completing their takeover in 2014, the likes of Phil and Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and recently David Beckham have witnessed four promotions in five years.

LATEST FORM…

THE BASICS… The league’s newcomers Salford City were promoted from the National League last season after defeating A.F.C Fylde 3-0 in the Play-Off final which prompted their first campaign

32 | www.stevenagefc.com

After a slow start to their new lives in Sky Bet League Two the team found themselves in the bottom half of the table until the turn of the year. They lost their first two fixtures of the new year, but have only lost a further two games in their last nine in all competitions, and have progressed into the semi-finals of the Leasing.Com trophy for the first time and are 11th in League Two on 41 points. In their last game, the Ammies tasted defeat thanks to a stoppage time

ADAM ROONEY

winner from promotion chasers Plymouth Argyle when Ryan Hardie came off the bench to score in the 92nd minute - that after debutant James Wilson looked to have earned a point for Salford by making it 2-2.

STAR MAN… Adam Rooney signed from Aberdeen last season to much fanfare and finished as Salford’s top goalscorer; fourth overall in the National League as they secured promotion at the first time of asking. The striker has had a quite season in terms of finding the back of net and is again the club’s top goalscorer in which he has scored eight goals in 30 games in the league. The 31-year-old has over 150 career goals to his name and

has played in the Championship, League 1 & 2, Scottish Premiership and Europa League.

GRAHAM ALEXANDER

THE GAFFER… Graham Alexander was appointed as manager at the start of last season taking over from joint-managers Bernard Morley and Anthony Johnson. The 48-year-old started his managerial career at Fleetwood Town and guided the club to promotion from League Two after defeating Burton Albion 1-0 in the Play-Off final. The former midfielder began his playing career at Scunthorpe United, whom he later went on to manage and played for teams such as Luton, Preston and Burnley in the Premier League, before finishing up at Luton. He scored 107 goals in 833 appearances. by Taylor Catton
