THE CHAIRMAN

G

PHIL WALLACE

ood afternoon and welcome to the players, and officials of Scunthorpe United. It’s always good to write at the start of a New Year and my best wishes to everyone for a happy and healthy 2021. It’s also good to finish your year with a win, so all of us were delighted with the win over Cambridge in midweek. We played with an intensity and desire that was great to see and I felt the win should have been more comfortable than it was. Actually that’s been the case so many times in 2020 and our lack of goals for has been the single reason why we’ve ended 2020 in a relegation place as I believe our defensive record is top six material. So, clearly, you can imagine where our efforts to strengthen the squad this week will lay…. I said before that we hope to bring in 4 or 5 new players and that’s still the target so hopefully after this game we can look forward to some new faces at the training ground during January. Our result in midweek brought our points total over the last 6 league games to 9, having been beaten just once in those 6 games. There’s any number of ‘look back’ stats to form an opinion, but the last 6 games provide an accurate pointer of where we’re going. I’m happy with that 1.5 points/game ratio – for the moment – but we know full well that we have to get that closer to 2 points/game for the remaining 27 games, including today. Continuing our existing 6 game form over the remaining 27 games would almost certainly see us safe but, really, we’re better than that. Much better. I had this same feeling in January 2011, after we first arrived in the EFL. On this day in 2011 we had 24 points from 20 games and it looked as if the step up was bigger than we thought. But we adjusted, strengthened and made the play offs in the last game of the season,

www.stevenagefc.com

then won those play offs to get promoted. Anything can happen in football, which is why we love it! Looking back to our start this season, we didn’t have the time or opportunity to get it right in the summer. If we’d known in May or June that we’d be in the EFL I have no doubt we’d have been able to sign the players we wanted and be pushing for a promotion place now. But we didn’t know until 11 August, when most of the targets were signed by others and so we are where we are. But the only way to achieve anything is to learn from your mistakes and look forwards, which is all we think about. One thing is for sure, none of us at Stevenage FC will give anything less than 100% to get us back up the table and create the excitement of previous years for our fans. Happy New Year!

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 2 JANUARY It feels as if there’s a psychological element to the first game of a brandnew calendar year. It’s a chance to put a poor first half of the season behind you – or build upon a good one to date. And it can be a springboard for the second half of the campaign too. We’ve played on New Year’s Day plenty of times over the years. But we’ve seen our fair share of fixtures on the 2nd too. And, to begin with at least, we made a habit of coming out on top. The first four occasions saw us win to nil on this day – although the fourth was a Southern Combinations Cup fixture at Royston Town. In the grand scheme of things, it wouldn’t have been the biggest priority for Cloughie in his first season as Boro’ boss. But it does go down as our biggest win on this day; two goals for Shaun Marshall helping us to a 4-0 win. Our record after that, however, becomes slightly patchier as we lost our 100% record. In 2005, we suffered our first defeat on this day - and in the Hertfordshire derby of all matches. A late Andy Woodman error led to a corner from which Barnet took full advantage to nab it 2-1 at the death. A 3-1 victory against Cambridge the following year (2006) had us back on track as far as ‘today’ is concerned. Except we couldn’t maintain the winning form we hoped we’d rediscovered when our next fixture on this day came around; this time as a Football League side. Two losses either side of a 2-2 draw with Leyton Orient (2016) means it’s now 15 years since we last won ‘on this day’. That seems like a round-enough figure to end what has been a long wait on.

YOU AGAIN?: SCUNTHORPE UNITED The Iron are still quite an unfamiliar proposition for Boro’. With the exception of Salford City (3), Bolton Wanderers (1) and Harrogate Town (1), we’ve played none of the current League Two cohort fewer times. Our five meetings with the North Lincolnshire side are splattered across a period now stretching back more than nine years to October 2011. And it was only because we’d achieved a historic double promotion from the Conference to League One that set us up. Maybe it’s because we’re still quite new to one another, but the collective goal tally so far isn’t massive. We’ve scored

www.stevenagefc.com

three in five, while the Iron edge it with four goals. The first match between us and Scunthorpe United saw us lose 2-1 at the Lamex – the only time our games saw what the bookies call Over 2.5 Goals. The Iron got their goals in stoppage time at the end of the first and second halves. Our consolation came even later in second half stoppage time. In all, we met four times in League One before the Scunthorpe United were relegated at the end of the 2012-3 season. It was the campaign that gave us our only victory to date against them too; 1-0 at the Lamex. But as we made our own way back down to League Two at the end of the following season, the Iron were heading back up. And that led to a six-season gap until we’d meet them again; a 0-0 draw at Glanford Park before the 2019-20 season came to an early end.

new year always brings new opportunities and after a tough 2020, the Foundation is looking forward to helping our community get back on its feet and provide even more opportunities for people to get back on track. There is so much to be optimistic about, NCS will return in the summer providing opportunities for over 100 young people to have an amazing summer and make memories that will last a lifetime. Our biggest cohort in our Girls’ Development Centre will return, offering 88 girls weekly coaching opportunities to represent Stevenage FC. Just before Christmas, we were notified that our Tackling Loneliness Project had secured a further 3 months’ worth of funding from the DCMS, allowing us to continue this work and support people into the Spring. Our flourishing relationship with the Herts Sports Partnership will see our Strength & Balance classes, continue to be offered right across the county, as well as online until at least June. Later this month, we’ll be offering trials for our new Girls’ Football Education Programme, a post 16 football offer for girls looking to combine academic

studies with high level football coaching, delivered in partnership with Marriotts School. Adding this to the GDC pathway and the progress that Stevenage FC Women have made, reinforces our commitment to providing a high quality pathway for local female footballers to achieve their potential. By March, we’ll have a brand new traineeship offer to support local people to find work, particularly after the impact the pandemic has had on the job market, offering vocational qualifications, alongside practical support to get back into work. As restrictions lift, our normal face to face activity will resume, something the team are very much looking forward to. Behind the scenes, the Foundation is working on a new strategy to steer us for the next 3-4 years, listening to what our community wants and needs from us, as well as key partners such as Stevenage Borough Council, Public Health Hertfordshire, the Police, Citizens Advice, Mind in Mid Herts, East & North Herts NHS Trust, Hertfordshire FA and many more. We look forward to launching the new strategy in the middle of the year and telling you all what we intend to do to support our local community for years to come.

irst of all a big Happy New Year to everyone and in particular our Academy players and parents who like so many have had a really difficult time with the stop start of the season - many at really important times in their development. 2021 will no doubt bring many more challenges however we are determined to get as much football in as we can in a safe and developmental environment. Flexibility will be key, from staff, players and parents as we will no doubt suffer from last minute changes but the number one priority will be to get our boys playing every week and adding layers to their game. Our scholars go into the New Year off the back of some really promising performances as they enter the final stretch in their quest to gain that first professional contract and patience will be key for them. Careers won’t get decided in a game rather than in a series of high

WELCOME CLUB MATTERS Scunthorpe United come to play Boro day with a fascinating history which includes a couple of home grounds and a couple of names as well. Founded in 1899, originally it was just Scunthorpe United in the non-league set-up, but in 1910 the club merged with local side North Lindsey United to form Scunthorpe and Lindsey United.

As the conurbation began to grow with the rise of the steel industry, the emerging Football League was the eventual goal of the club. At the this stage the Show Ground (later to have the word ‘Old’ added to it) became the new home and Scunthorpe and Lindsey United pressed ahead with their ambition of reaching the senior level. The end of the second world war proved auspicious as they tried yet again on a number of occasions until in 1950 they were finally elected to Division Three North. In their first season Scunthorpe and Lindsey United finished in 12th place After a steady period in the lower reaches

they built a side successful enough to win promotion to the second tier and in 196162 finished fourth (the highest position to date the club has reached). By this time the name Lindsey had been dropped by the club and Scunthorpe United settled into an era between the third and fourth tiers. The late sixties and seventies were marked by the nurturing of soon to be world superstar Kevin Keegan, who was sold to Liverpool in 1971 for a then generous fee of £35,000. Scunthorpe were to gain footballing headlines again at the end of the 80s when, in the wake of the fire at Bradford City and subsequent regulations, they decided to build a new ground. In 1988 they moved from the Old Showground to the newly created Glanford Park, and fortunes have seen a number of highs and lows since then. The Iron have certainly had a stab at life back in the second tier, playing four seasons at that level this century, while closing the 2003-2004 season just four points from dropping into the Conference. In the past 10 seasons the Iron have

played seven campaigns in Division one, with three in Division Two. Their last season in the Championship was in 2010-11.

THE BOSS Scunthorpe United appointed Neil Cox as the first team manager in August 2020. He arrived from Notts County, where he was assistant manager to Neal Ardley. Cox is well known to Scunthorpe fans, a local lad, he has come through the ranks. He made 26 appearances, scoring one goal, before a move to Aston Villa in 1991 for a fee of £400,000. The former defender, who won caps as an England Under-21 international, went on to also play at the highest level for Middlesbrough, Bolton Wanderers and Watford before ending his playing career with Cardiff City, Crewe Alexandra and Leek Town. Cox made a total of 652 senior career appearances and scored 42 goals. He started his coaching life with a management stint at Leek Town before a six-year spell as assistant to Neal Ardley at AFC Wimbledon before moving on to Notts County.

WATCH OUT FOR

Mark Howard - Scunthorpe United completed the signing of goalkeeper Mark Howard on a free transfer in October 2020. Howard started his career with Arsenal. Cardiff City, St Mirren, Aberdeen, Blackpool (twice, and his last club before the Iron), Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers are also amongst his permanent clubs. He’s also been on loan with Falkirk, Swansea City and Salford City. In total, Howard has made almost 300 career appearances, and brings a wealth of experience to the squad, making 13 appearances so far this campaign.

STEVENAGE FC

COMMERCIAL As with every Club in the land, we’ve been starved of a vital income stream, after all, who wants to sponsor a match they can’t attend, hire an executive box they can’t access or sponsor a match ball that nobody will see? But we are ready for business. As soon as we’re allowed to reopen we will be there for you. Hopefully this current set of restrictions will have the desired effect and infection numbers will fall significantly

enough for us to be allowed to restart, most likely with a limited service similar to what was offered for the recent game against Grimsby Town with around 100 people being admitted to the North Stand, before a more general opening of the stadium as time goes on. For the very latest information, or to make a booking please log on to www.stevenagefc.com In the meantime, keep well, we hope to see you soon.

LATEST NEWS

SCUNTHORPE UNITED The first time I ever watched Scunthorpe United was on April 27th 1993. It was here at Broadhall Way in a “friendly” game, as part of the deal involving our Neil Trebble joining “The Iron”. Happily, Neil returned home three seasons later, and still remains to this day – as part of the match-day commentary team for BBC Three Counties radio. Scunthorpe’s manager is local lad Neil Cox. Neil was born, raised and bred in Scunthorpe. I’m not sure how many other EFL clubs can currently lay claim to such a fact, but we used to have our own Darren Sarll, who was from Stevenage. I bid a welcome to the players and officials of Scunthorpe here this afternoon.

HISTORY OF STEVENAGE FOOTBALL IN 100 OBJECTS – NO.2 This afternoon I present to you the Stevenage Town FC Supporters’ Club lapel badge with season bars. Issued in the 1960’s it comprises a large circular gilded brass example inlaid with red and white cloisonne enamel. The centre displays the club emblem of a tiger, along with their nickname at the time – “The Stripes”. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only variant of badge that the Stevenage Town FC ever produced, but I should love to be proved wrong. It came in either of two types of fixing, the shapedmetal buttonhole type, or the ‘brooch’ variant (pin and hook). Traditionally, the current SA has endeavoured to produce a new badge for most seasons as a life-long memento for collectors and fans alike.

CHAIRMAN’S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE By now, all current SA members will have received a copy of my Christmas message for 2020. I won’t go into repeating extracts from the prose, but for three poignant words - “Keep the Faith”. Happy New Year everyone. LLOYD BRISCOE SA Chairman

HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY FOOTBALL AT HOME The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform your garden into a proper footy pitch.
