ood evening and welcome to The Lamex Stadium for tonight’s game against Scunthorpe United. I am excited and very much looking forward to the game. It is always a memorable game when it is your first game as manager at the home stadium. I am excited, but also very conscious of the fact that it is an important game for us. It is small steps at the moment. I have only been at the club for a week and taken a few sessions. The players are eager, there is a good attitude, they are willing and they are enthusiastic. That is a very good start. My focus is the decision making on the pitch, how we go about gaining clarity on the way we play and making sure that we are all doing the same thing at the
“The hard work starts now” same time. That is going to be hard work. It sounds simple but you have got lots of players playing their game independently and I have got to find a way of making them think the same thing at the same time. We have to find a way to do that quickly. You get results by having a real purpose and clarity as a team. It does not happen overnight. The hard work starts now. The next game is always important, no matter who you are playing. I do not think we should avoid the reality of the situation. It is an important game in terms of the league table. When I arrived I was well aware of where the Club was sat in the league, and now we are playing two opponents who would be desperate for the points as well. We want to take the points that are available. We have two home games, and we want to get some points on the board before Christmas.

ood evening and welcome to the players and officials of Scunthorpe United. Since my last programme notes I am pleased to say we have appointed Paul Tisdale to the position of First Team Manager. We have said our sincere thanks to Robbie O’Keefe, Chris and Ronnie for standing in so well whilst we sought to appoint an experienced EFL manager. They did a great job. Whilst Paul took the reins on Monday, he felt that Robbie was best placed to take the game at Sutton and he took the game away at Yeovil. We know the results of both of those games and it is difficult to accept we are out of both cups now. We dominated the game overall at Sutton but couldn’t score, losing on penalties and the same story repeated itself away to Yeovil, where their one shot on target found the back of the net after a series of defensive mistakes. Personally, I was bitterly disappointed at the result and felt we could have played with more intensity, given the occasion and difference in quality between the two teams. However, that is what the FA Cup is all about and Yeovil deserved their win for their application and desire. Now we are going into the league campaign with nothing on our minds other than climbing the table. This game is obviously vitally important to both teams and there will be a strong desire from us to win the game and take all three points. Other than Scott being suspended, I believe we now have almost a full squad for Paul to pick from and I am hoping each and every one of our lads will give everything they have for the next two home games so that we can start to move up the league. It is very tight and two or three wins will move any team quickly up the table.
Around the stadium, you will have noticed the new LED screen above the turnstile block in the northeast corner and this replaces the old fixture board which used to be in that position. Using this screen we will hopefully keep folks up to date with our upcoming fixtures and news. We do have plans to complete the North end with new fencing either side of the stand and that will be in place before the end of this season. Back to the game – welcome to Paul in his first home fixture for the Club. Let’s get behind him and cheer the lads on to a win, setting us up for another exciting home game on Saturday. Enjoy the match.

ANDREW
PARKER 14th September 1978 – 30th November 2021 IN LOVING MEMORY OF ANDREW WHO UNEXPECTEDLY DIED AT THE AGE OF 43 YEARS. Andrew grew up in Stevenage and attended Barclay school and had a passion for football from the start. Andrew began refereeing at a very young age, he supported Stevenage F.C. and Tottenham Hotspurs. He wanted to be involved in football but, in his own admission he was not the greatest footballer so decided to take up refereeing. He passed his Referee’s exam under the guidance of the late Jim Poll. It was immediately clear that Andrew had the enthusiasm and dedication to progress as a referee. Andrew joined the Southern League match officials list as an assistant in 1999/2000 and quickly became a very popular and highly respected member of the group. He was later promoted to the National List of Contributory league referees and was also appointed as an assistant on the Conference league. In no time he had been promoted from Level 7 to Level 6 and then Level 5 in consecutive seasons. As tradition dictates, when he achieved his promotion to Level 5, as a top marked referee he was appointed to referee the Herts Junior Cup Final, the youngest referee ever to receive that honour. Andrew met his wife Paula and moved to Essex which allowed him to carry on his refereeing in that part of the county for several years. Andrew has passed his passion for football on to his nephews Euan and Owen who will take pride in playing football for Andrew and of course watching “The Boro” Everyone who knew Andrew knew he

had a louder than life personality, but was kind, thoughtful, very friendly, and always had a smile on his face. Andrew, we are so proud of you and all you have achieved, a true inspiration. Your legacy will live on through your family and friends. We will always love you from your doting wife Paula, Mum, Dad, Kate, Warren, Euan, Owen and all of your family and friends x The Family of Andrew would like to express their gratitude and kindness to Stevenage F.C. for the courtesy they have shown at this difficult time.

BORO
HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 07 DECEMBER In the list of our past outings on this date in history, it’s no surprise to see a sprinkling of FA Cup Round Two games. ’Tis the season, after all. And one of them stands out in particular as one of our finest results (arguably) of that time. It was on this day back in 1996 that Boro’ travelled down to Leyton Orient. Goals from Neil Catlin and Corey Browne earned a famous upset and booked our place in Round Three for the first time ever. The Class of 2013 achieved that same outcome, albeit avoiding a potential upset at home to non-league Stourbridge. A 4-0 win on 7 December that year eased us into the next stage. History teaches us that it doesn’t always go our own way in Round Two as well; something we learned yet again at the weekend. Richard Howell may have got us back on level terms on this date in 2002 after a frantic start away to Darlington. But the Football League club stepped up a gear and left Wayne Turner’s men without an answer. Not as prestigious as the FA Cup, but a cup win all the same came our way in 1989 with a 2-1 home win over Vauxhall Motors (Luton). You might not rate the Televised Sports (Int.) Senior Cup as a high priority – but it did give us a trophy for the cabinet at the end of the 1989-90 campaign. And it continued our strong record against our Luton neighbours. Back on league duty on this date, our form
18
is the veritable mixed bag. The less said about our home defeat to Woking in 2004 the better, while Graham Harding’s goal gave us a 1-0 win over Ware in 1985. Our three other appearances on 7 December have ended all square – including our 1991 clash at Top Field in which Martin Gittings scored our goal in a 1-1 draw. We’re now even more convinced that Gitts has scored on every date in the calendar across his time with us… We’ll see if that’s the case in the next programme. 1985 Ware 0-1 Stevenage Borough, Vauxhall Opel League Division Two North (Harding) 1989 Stevenage Borough 2-1 Vauxhall Motors (Luton), Televised Sports (Int.) Sen. Cup R3 (Parker, McComb) 1991 Hitchin Town 1-1 Stevenage Borough, Diadora League Division 1 (Gittings) 1992 Stevenage Borough 0-0 Harrow Borough, Diadora League Premier Division 1996 Leyton Orient 1-2 Stevenage Borough, FA Cup R2 (Catlin, Browne) 2002 Darlington 4-1 Stevenage Borough, FA Cup R2 (Howell) 2004 Stevenage Borough 0-2 Woking, Nationwide Conference 2013 Stevenage 4-0 Stourbridge, FA Cup R2 (Zoko, Akins, Freeman, Morais) 2019 Stevenage 0-0 Crawley Town, Sky Bet League Two

YOU AGAIN? SCUNTHORPE UNITED We don’t have much time left to sample the delights of 2021. In three-and-a-bit short weeks, we’ll be switching up the calendars and moving into 2022 – a new manager at the helm, and new hopes of a life spent higher up the table. But it was today’s opponents that ushered us into this calendar year way back when; Boro’ bouncing back from an early goal on 2 January to win 3-1 and drag ourselves out of the bottom two. Elliott List’s second half goal saw us double down on the Iron as last season neared its conclusion. Our 1-0 victory up at Glanford Park is the first time we’ve claimed all three points on their patch. Not that you can call it a hoodoo as such. It was only our fourth visit as our record against Scunthorpe United isn’t exactly extensive. We’ve only managed three home fixtures, however. The aborted 201920 campaign saw us head north for a 0-0 draw – but the return at the Lamex never happened. Just in case you were wondering about the uneven home/ away split. And it was the 2019-20 season that saw us reunited with the Iron after a six-year
www.stevenagefc.com
absence. The main reason is because we kept missing each other. They were relegated from League One a year before we were, but secured an instant path back into the third tier as we came down. And they hung around up there until 2019. In that ill-fated 2012-3 campaign for them, we traded 1-0 wins on home territory. Greg Tansey got the decisive goal for us at the Lamex, while their 1-0 victory in February 2013 saw them actually move out of the relegation places. To round this up, we only need to step back one more season – 2011-2. Our first-ever meeting with the Iron took place at the Lamex in October. Goals in stoppage time at the end of both halves were enough for the Iron to head home with the points. Mind you, Josh Walker still managed to find time even later on to reduce the deficit. And it needed another late goal, this time from Darius Charles, to ensure we came back from Glanford Park with a point in January 2012.

ood evening and welcome to tonight’s academy updates. A warm welcome to the new manager Paul Tisdale and his staff, best of luck for tonight’s fixture and the foreseeable future. Chris Agutter got a chance to take charge of his first U18’s game on Saturday with a win against MK Dons. The players continued their fine form and 3 first half goals from Finlay Johnson, Harry Gilzean and Sam Tinubu got on the scoresheet to add 3 points to the league tally. Jimmy Martin’s U15s group will travel to Ipswich Town on Wednesday to compete in the U15 Floodlit cup to continue their progress after a 2-1 victory against Southend Utd last month. Tom Farr has been organising additional fixtures for his Foundation Phase, visiting Manchester United, Liverpool, Leicester City and Birmingham. These fixtures create experiences that they would not get in our EFL games programme. We have also appointed our new Elite Development Programme Lead Coach in Tom Malins. Tom is our U14 Academy coach and brings a wealth of experience to the programme having been Academy Manager at another Elite centre. Tom also
has huge experience in Norway having worked with the Norwegian national U15 squad. Credit must go to our EDP Assistant Coach Josh Caldicott-Steven who has been instrumental in the recent week in ensuring a smooth running. Chris Winton has moved across to become lead Tutor and Steve Barker our Head of academy analysis is also joining to support the coaching and provide the players with the opportunity to analyse their sessions/games. WOMEN Poppy Bennett DEFENDER
Poppy, back in the red and white of Stevenage, how does it feel? It feels good to be back it really does, I’ve missed seeing everyone on a regular basis and missed kicking a ball around! Can you tell us a bit about yourself? I’m 24 years old, youth football coach, massive Chelsea fan and love making the odd mix every now and then! For those who are new to following Stevenage, how would you describe yourself as a player? I’m very passionate about football in general so I tend to play with my heart on my sleeve! John Terry was my idol on the pitch growing up so being a centre-back I’ve always tried to play like him. I’d like to think I play with my heart on my sleeve, step up to the challenge and will always try to block anything goal bound that I can! You were thrown into the deep end straightaway playing 120 minutes in the FA Cup epic a couple of weeks ago. How would you assess your first game back? It could have gone a lot worse! I think I’m proud of myself mentally because initially I wanted more time to settle in and to get used to the environment again as I’d only been back for 10 days but I know we’ve got a lot of injuries at the moment, so when Fadi told me he needed me to play I was never going to let the team down. I don’t think the old me would have handled the pressure too well but I think I had a fairly good game which always helps. I haven’t played first team football
www.stevenagefc.com
for such a long time so to come back to a proper cup tie and when Coley scored the equalised in the dying seconds, I haven’t felt that kind of buzz for years! What was your reason for coming back and what do you hope to achieve with the team? I just missed everything. I missed playing, I missed the socialising and I guess I missed the routine also. I tend to struggle sometimes without a proper routine so with my partner playing also I had loads of spare time in the evenings and got bored very easily! When things didn’t work out first time round I kept in touch with some of the players and staff, then a few familiar faces returned so it made my decision a lot easier when I got the call from Fadi asking me to come back. There’s been a lot of changes since you took time away from football, what are your impressions of the squad and the work that’s taken place? I think there is a really good team spirit around the club at the minute, some great relationships have been built between staff and players and it just seems like everyone is willing to put the work in for each other on and off the pitch. Everyone seems positive and motivated and I think that’s shown in recent games. What are your goals and expectations for the rest of the season? My personal goals are to start more first team games and to push myself to get even fitter, so I’m hoping if I can continue to put in the work it’ll happen. It’s unfortunate there are more teams getting relegated this season so I want to help the team out as much as I can in our battle to stay in this league.

something of a steady ship, the Iron winning one, losing one and drawing three of their first five league games. Their maiden victory was at home against Tranmere in August and their second victory was also at Glanford Park, coming back on October 23 with a 2-1 success over Crawley. Since then they have lost twice in the league and drawn three times. They have also made two cup exits as well, losing to Doncaster in both the FA Cup first round and the FL Trophy where they finished bottom of their group.
DID YOU KNOW? • Scunthorpe’s record victory came back in 1965 when they whipped our near neighbours Luton 8-1 in the old Division Three. In the same match Barrie Thomas hit five, also a record for the Iron. •S cunthorpe’s record transfer business has a Scottish twist. Their record fee received is £2.5 for Gary Hooper from Celtic in 2010 while a year earlier they paid Hibs £700,000 for Rob Jones.

ONE TO WATCH Scunthorpe completed the signing of striker Jake Scrimshaw on a season-long loan from Championship side Bournemouth in August 2021. The forward joined Bournemouth in 2015 and has since experienced time out on loan with Poole Town, Eastleigh and, more recently, fellow Sky Bet League Two outfits Walsall and Newport County, where he made ten starts in total and scored five goals last season.
THE BOSS Scunthorpe appointed Keith Hill as the club’s new first team manager iat the start of last month. An experienced manager, with over 700 matches under his belt, Hill has achieved two promotions from League Two, and kept Rochdale in League One for five years. He also helped them achieve their first promotion in 41 years alongside their highest ever league finish. Alongside his 11 years in charge at Spotland, he has also managed Barnsley in the Championship, Bolton Wanderers and most recently Tranmere Rovers, where he achieved a play-off spot last season. His playing career saw him make over 400 appearances and play for Blackburn Rovers, Plymouth Argyle, Rochdale, Cheltenham Town, Wrexham and Morecambe between 1987 and 2003.

SA TICKET DRAW At every home game, the SA announce the winner of the Supporters’ Association match day ticket initiative. This is where a member’s number is drawn and he/ she wins two free match-day tickets for a future game. Yet another benefit for being a member of the SA. At the recent draw for the game against Colchester United, the lucky ticket was drawn by Nico, grandson of SA committee member Geoff Gibbs. Some of you may remember Nico’s dad, Harry, who for several seasons sold match-day programmes (the old-fashioned hard copy variety) around The Lamex.
DID YOU KNOW? That 100 years ago, the flu epidemic was rampant in North Hertfordshire and many football matches were postponed/ cancelled. When Stevenage played, key players were missing and spectator attendance was very low, drastically affecting the club’s income. Even the local ESA factory was forced to operate a 28 hour week, closing on

Mondays and Saturdays. A “Christmas Unemployed Fund” was organised where many groups and individuals made donations. Football too, played its part. A themed “Fancy Dress Football Match” was played at Hitchin on behalf of the fund. A team of women dressed up as men, played against a team of men dressed up as women at the Fishpond’s ground, home of Hitchin Blue Cross FC.

FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION (FSA) Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah was crowned Men’s Player of the Year at the Football Supporters’ Association Awards which took place in London on November 29th. With almost 400,000 votes cast, the FSA Awards are the largest supporter-led awards in the UK and Salah topped the fans’ vote, holding off competition from Chelsea’s Mason Mount, Man City pair Phil Foden and Rúben Dias, West Ham United’s Michail Antonio and Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans.
