THE CHAIRMAN
PHIL WALLACE
G
ood afternoon and welcome to the players, and officials of Southend Utd. We were desperately unlucky not to bring back all 3 points from Walsall in the week, with a penalty being awarded against us in injury time. But these things happen over a season and I’m sure we’ll benefit from one going in our favour another day. This past week was about changing the management structure so that we can put more hours into creating a winning environment. Lennie Lawrence, who was helping part time, has therefore left us and we’ve brought in Joe Dunne as Assistant Manager. Joe has extensive experience at this level and a great reputation, so we’re excited at this positive move forwards. Our recent form has been significantly better and we now need to start grinding results out to climb the table. The games are coming thick and fast now and this is the first opportunity to welcome back fans into the stadium since attendances were stopped last season. Financially, the COVID restricted
www.stevenagefc.com
number of fans is a backwards step for us since the number of stewards required to create a safe environment, as required by our Safety Group, has increased significantly. It means that we are losing even more money by playing in front of a restricted crowd than behind closed doors…. For that reason, I’m hoping that we will very soon be allowed to lift the restriction but notwithstanding that, it’s 100% better to have fans back. Even our reduced Covid number of 1,500 will add greatly to the atmosphere and the support will be a massive boost. Today is the first step – we’ve reduced the number to around 1,000 – but I hope that we can move that number up on a continual basis until we can reach the tier maximum. Big game for us today. We have a tough job ahead of us this month, but we know what we have to do. Those of you able to attend the game socially distanced and wearing masks, let’s get behind the lads to urge them on to a win, making sure we don’t fall foul of the rules on shouting and singing. What strange times. Enjoy the match.

here certainly weren’t any signs of that ‘difficult’ second season as Boro made themselves more than at home in the GM Vauxhall Conference. Heading deeper into December Boro found themselves in fourth place in the table and welcomed an inconsistent Bromsgrove Rovers side. It had been an eventful month leading up to this as a week earlier the home

team had smashed Macclesfield 4-0 at Broadhall Way while in previous weeks they had also romped past Runcorn 8-0 and enjoyed their first FA Cup first round foray, a 2-1 defeat at Hereford. There were goals here as well, but although Barrowcliff, Lynch and Hayles were all on target, Bromsgrove were more than a match for the hosts’ defence and the 1,565 crowd went home disappointed with just a point. FOUNDATION
“
As the second national lockdown came to an end this week, the Foundation has been working hard to get ready for the return of much of our faceto-face delivery. The engagement we’ve had with the local community through our digital sessions has been incredible and we are focused on continuing to offer that support for those that are either having to continue to shield themselves or that are not confident about returning to our face-to-face sessions. From Monday 7th December, we’ll return to a number of our local primary schools delivering curriculum and extra curricular sessions that support the schools to develop their pupils not just through sport but by getting them active with their classmates and using sport as a topic to deliver other subjects such as numeracy and literacy. Our schools work has been the cornerstone of the Foundation’s work since we began
www.stevenagefc.com
in 2010 and we can’t wait to be back delivering to local pupils. Alongside our schools work, our community & health sessions will return with sessions available for everyone aged 2-92! Whether it be Active Tots, Back in the Game, Premier League Kicks, Intro to Exercise, Walking Football and more, we’ve got something for everyone to get you active and connected. You can find the details for all our sessions by visiting our website – www.stevenagefcfoundation.com Finally, last month we were delighted to welcome Leah Casali and Jamie Mincher to the Community & Health team and are now equally delighted to welcome Scott Weald who joins us as our NCS Admin Officer. We’d also like to welcome Aaron Cox who officially starts with the Foundation Monday 7th December in a new role, as our Employability & Skills Officer. Aaron joins us from Fulham FC Foundation and we’ll be announcing more about how Aaron’s work will support our local community in the coming weeks.”

WOMEN POSITION Centre Midfield and Captain.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO FOOTBALL? My dad’s a big football fan, so from a young age I would watch games with him. I was always interested and spent most of my childhood playing football with the boys; either in my local park or school.
WHO INSPIRED YOU TO PLAY FOOTBALL? David Beckham.
WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE FEMALE FOOTBALLER AND WHY? Steph Houghton – she is a born leader, both on and off the pitch, an excellent professional footballer, she shows great commitment and determination and works hard for her teammates.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOTBALL MOMENT AS A PLAYER? Back in May 2014 when I played against Arsenal Women FC in the Continental Cup. I was a player for Watford Women FC at the time; the experience was amazing, the crowd and the atmosphere. To get the opportunity to be able to play against world class players like Kelly Smith, Casey Stoney and Alex Scott, it’s a feeling I will never forget.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG GIRLS STARTING OUT THEIR FOOTBALL JOURNEY? FOLLOW THE WOMEN:

ood afternoon and welcome to the Lamex for our return to League action following the FA Cup heroics. A continuation of current form would be just the ticket as we enter the busy festive period. These are my first programme notes of the season and also the first of my tenure as the Academy Head of Coaching, a role I accepted in July. We have in this convoluted season made a number of alterations to our staffing, playing philosophy and coaching syllabus, doing so with the same intent of developing the very best young players and people for our 1st team and the wider community. Jamal has settled in to his role as Foundation Phase Lead, Jimmy continues his fine work but now with the Youth Development Phase and we have also welcomed a terrific addition to the team in Matteo as the Academy’s Head of Sport Science & Medical. I am fortunate enough to not only work across the age groups with our talented, hard-working players, but also the committed and passionate part-time coaches who dedicate so much time to their age groups on and off the pitch. It is testament to them that we have quite clearly showcased the style of play we insist on, irrespective of the challenges
www.stevenagefc.com
thrown at them by opponents week on week. Finally, we are delighted to have offered two more of our U16’s their 2-year apprenticeships with us at the culmination of this season. Jake and Harrison have been with the Academy for 3 and 8 seasons respectively and join Sam, Owen, Freddie and Harry as an exciting cohort of young players seeking to break in to the 1st team one day. All the best to Revs and the team today, come on Boro! IEUAN LEWIS – Academy Head of Coaching

CLUB MATTERS Founded in 1906, Southend entered the Football League in 1920 and have never been relegated from the league set-up, even though much of their history has been spent in the bottom two tiers. Southend reached the second tier for the first time in their history in 1991 and spent six years at this level. After being relegated back to the fourth tier they rose again and in 2006 they were promoted to what had then been

renamed the Championship, although this lasted just a season. The campaign is remembered by many for the exploits of striker Freddy Eastwood and his part in November of that year as Southend beat Manchester United 1-0 in the League Cup at Roots Hall. In 2010 Southend faced a winding up order due to unpaid tax bills and the issue has dogged them for the past 10 years, although just over a month ago a bill was settled and this issue is now hopefully resolved. Its not just this season which has been difficult for our visitors, the horrors of 2020 has been mirrored in their results as well as they have managed just four wins in all competitions in the calendar year. They were relegated from Division One on the Points Per Game (PPG) method in 22nd place, some 16 points behind Wimbledon who were saved in 20th place. And the poor run continued as the Shrimpers only managed to grab their first win of this campaign at the 17th
time of asking when they earned a 1-0 win at Walsall in mid-November. Prior to this they were on a run of six straight league defeats and they have only drawn twice this season, both times in the league. Many may not know that the club have had a number of big name former players managing such as Bobby Moore, David Webb, Alvin Martin, Barry Fry and Peter Taylor.
THE BOSS Mark Molesley was appointed boss of Southend in August of this year on a three year deal, though the former defender will be familiar with Boro fans for an 11 game spell in the 2007-2008 season. In a playing career which took in semi-pro games with more than 100 appearances in the Football league, Molesley served with Bournemouth, Plymouth, Exeter and Aldershot before managing at Weymouth and in the Bournemouth youth set up. This is his first appointment in the Football League.
WATCH OUT FOR Midfielder Timothee Dieng signed for Southend after turning down a contract offer from Bradford City in 2018. Dieng, who can also operate in defence, made 78 appearances for the Bantams in two seasons. Prior to his move to the Yorkshire outfit Dieng was at Oldham Athletic who signed him from French side Brest for two years. The Frenchman was made captain under former manager Sol Campbell as well as showing his versatility with some fine performances in the centre of defence. He has appeared in the past 13 games.

COMMERCIAL As with every Club in the land, we’ve been starved of a vital income stream, after all, who wants to sponsor a match they can’t attend, hire an executive box they can’t access or sponsor a match ball that nobody will see? But we are ready for business. As soon as we’re allowed to reopen we will be there for you. Hopefully this current set of restrictions will have the desired effect and infection numbers will fall significantly
enough for us to be allowed to restart, most likely with a limited service similar to what was offered for the recent game against Grimsby Town with around 100 people being admitted to the North Stand, before a more general opening of the stadium as time goes on. For the very latest information, or to make a booking please log on to www.stevenagefc.com In the meantime, keep well, we hope to see you soon.

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION
LATEST NEWS
WELCOME A big Boro welcome to all those supporters who are allowed back into the Lamex Stadium this afternoon. Welcome too, to the players and officials of Southend United, our guests from neighbouring Essex. It’s always a lively game when The Shrimpers come to Stevenage.
ARCHIVES I was pleased to receive a couple of old scrap-books from the family of a Stevenage supporter recently. The family were clearing the family home of their recently departed father, and wondered whether I would be happy to entertain his old collection of Stevenage memorabilia. The scrap-books related to the mid & late 1990’s and took in the classic FA Cup games against Newcastle United. Although pretty value-less from a commercial perspective, they were very much valued by the previous owner – and by me too. So, an appeal. If you have (or know of someone) who has paraphernalia related to football in Stevenage – especially from the ‘Town’ and ‘Athletic’ eras - then do get in touch with me at Lloyd@SFCSA.co.uk The BBC and the British Museum once contrived to document the History of the World in 100 objects. I’m thinking of doing the same sort of thing about the History of Football in Stevenage.
FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION (FSA) Last week, a number of MPs called for the Government to fire up its “fan led review” of football governance in a Parliamentary debate attended by the sports minister Nigel Huddleston.
www.stevenagefc.com
The MP for Bury North (James Daly) told the meeting that Bury FC has been “abandoned to the wolves by the footballing authorities.” The MP for Coventry South (Zara Sultana) said that the issue of Coventry City supporters having to follow their club from the Ricoh Arena to other towns was “absurd and ridiculous”, and Justin Madders MP cited the notion that money was haemorrhaging out of the game to owners, such as the £1bn dividend paid to themselves by the Glazers at Manchester United. The sports minister responded by saying that the review had already started “informally” and assured the meeting that it has no intention to kick the issue into the long grass.
SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION Recently, I informed of what other clubs supporters’ groups were doing in these bizarre and unprecedented times. My first review focussed on Crawley, but today I look at Southend United. The Shrimpers Trust are closely involved with community initiatives and I was interested to note their “Off the Streets” campaign and fund-raising initiatives for the homeless – especially at Christmas time. I was also interested to read of their Christmas Card idea being promoted by the Southend United Ex-Players Association. Never one to shy away from what is a good idea, your own SA will continue to monitor what other clubs are up to – with interest... LLOYD BRISCOE SA Chairman
