ood evening and a warm welcome everyone to The Lamex Stadium for this evening’s Carabao Cup tie against League One Southend United. We were devastated with the late goal we conceded on Saturday in a close game that was looking like a nil-nil written all over it. We started the first half nicely, bright and on the front foot. Their goalkeeper made an excellent save after three minutes to deny Paul Taylor scoring on his debut and to be fair to Exeter, they had the experience required in their team to ride the storm and end up winning a game they had no right to win. They sensed the right moment to score the winner and we didn’t. That’s a moment of learning for us - good teams nick points without necessarily playing well. We got together over the weekend and we took many positives from the performance overall, which was a huge step forward from our first game at Salford. Although we clearly didn’t do enough to win, we certainly didn’t deserve to lose it. That happens in football and we will definitely win points we don’t deserve at points throughout the season – every team does. We were also pleased with the performance of our four home debutants on Saturday. Noor showed his qualities on the ball to make things happen. Soares fought for every first and second ball and kept it simple in possession. Stokesy defended well against a tricky winger and was effective going forward whilst Paul Taylor was the best player on the pitch. I am sure he is going to be a fan’s favourite with the Boro supporters. These boys are still not at a good level Stevenage FC v Southend Utd
physically but once they get fit and gel with the rest of the team, I am sure we will be a force going forward. It is a great chance to bounce back tonight with a performance and a result. Cup success is a fundamental part of our history and we will be going all out to win. Expect us to start fast and fiery with a competitive edge throughout the team. Our game on Saturday was one of those that you come away from and think ‘that wasn’t the right result’. I’m not saying that we deserved to win because one shot on target in 90 minutes is not going to win many games, but we didn’t deserve to lose in the last minutes of the game. But, what goes around comes around and I’m sure they’ll be games this season that go our way when they perhaps shouldn’t. So – onto the next one and tonight is an important game for us. We’ve not enjoyed a long cup run for a while and we’ve missed the excitement and the income that good cup runs can provide. I’m sure our opponents this evening feel the same way, so it should be a cracking game. Off the pitch we held our breath while we used our automatic turnstiles for Stevenage FC v Southend Utd
the first time on Saturday… we had some hiccups, but as people get to accept that you must buy a ticket in the ticket office if you haven’t bought before the game, then I’m sure we’ll iron out any problems and be all the better for it. Certainly the speed of entry was impressive and once the 4 new ticket windows open in the North Stand – which we hope to be in place by the next home game – fans will have more options to buy tickets for all areas. We’re also hoping the new LED screen will be in place by the end of the month. Now all the heavy lifting equipment is gone, we can start to plan that next stage of our stadium upgrade. Work under the North Stand is still frantic and we’re just getting close to fitting out toilets and a tea bar. We’re still hoping to open partially for the home game against Carlisle on 14th Sept, with the bar area opening in October. Back to the game and let’s hear you drive us into the next round tonight! ON THIS DAY Thursday August 13, 1981 Woolwich Trophy Stevenage 0 Hitchin 1 We have gone back in time to the very early 80s for our on this day look back - a period when the fledgling club were really finding their feet. This was the second game in the local pre-season competition which had already seen Boro lose 2-0 to Letchworth GC. There is scant information on the full team against Hitchin although we do know it included Martyn Thompson, Paul Peterson, Peter Gittings and Trevor Metcalfe and sadly Stevenage were to go down 1-0 against the old enemy. The season was the first in the UCL Premier after they had dominated all before them the previous year. ith a place in the Football League comes the League Cup and Boro begin their 10th season in this competition with a mixed bag of results. Over the past 9 campaigns we have played 11 matches, 7 at home (the first 5 in a row) and 4 away. Here we take a brief tour of all our matches played.
2010: First Round Stevenage 1 Portsmouth 2 In their opening Football League campaign Boro made their debut in the competition in a match where all the action took place in 36 first half minutes. Nadir Ciftci put the cash-strapped visitors ahead but Boro were back on terms when Darren Murphy saw a shot deflected home. Alas Pompey retook the lead when Michael Brown headed past Chris Day and there was to be no leveller.
2011: First Round Stevenage 3 Peterborough 4 A last-gasp extra time penalty saw Posh through in this thriller. Boro levelled a 15th 16 | www.stevenagefc.com
Greg Tansey takes a free kick against Southampton in 2012 minute strike from David Ball when Stacy Long fired in from the edge of the box. Ball scored his second of the game after the break but Michael Bostwick sent the game into extra time. Ex-Boro man George Boyd made it 3-2 but Chris Beardsley levelled for a third time, only for Lee Tomlin to hit the heartbreaking winner from the spot.
2012: First Round Stevenage 3 AFC Wimbledon 1 At last a win in this competition as Stevenage triumphed at a canter. After an own goal from Pim Balkestein and a tapin from James Dunne, the Dons did pull one back from Brendan Kiernan. But Mark Roberts made it 3-1 on the break and there was to be no way back for the visitors.
2012: Second Round Stevenage 1 Southampton 4 A fourth home tie in a row for Stevenage but they fell back to losing ways as they were outclassed by the Saints. Stevenage did dominate in a goalless first half but they were punished after the break when Tadanari Lee, Billy Sharp and Jason Puncheon all netted. Michael Thalassitis did pull one back for Boro but Ben Reeves finished the scoring. Stevenage FC v Southend Utd
2013: First Round Stevenage 2 Ipswich 0 Five home ties in a row and another First Round success as League One Boro beat the Championship side. After a goalless first half Filipe Morais drilled home from the penalty spot and the upset was sealed with 14 minutes to go when Jordan Burrow struck.
Everton 2 Stevenage 1 Remarkably it took six goes to play away in the competition and this proved to be a classic for Boro fans. After a hectic opening Boro went ahead when Luke Freeman poked home on 36 minutes but it was 1-1 at the break after Gerard Deulofeu scored. Following a battling second half Boro matched their hosts and the game went to extra-time. Marouane Fellaini, in the thick of transfer speculation about a move to Manchester United, was brought off the bench and he denied almost certain penalties when he netted the winner with just five minutes to go.
2016: Second Round Stevenage 0 Stoke City 4 Potters manager Mark Hughes brought a strong side to Stevenage and the class told as the Premiership side won with a brace either side of the break. 2013: Second Round
Championship side. After a goalless first half, Stevenage reached the second round for the third time courtesy of a strike on 53 minutes from Ben Kennedy.
2014: First Round Stevenage 0 Watford 1 Back home again and a first ever senior clash with Hertfordshire rivals Watford. Alas it was to be the Hornets who would claim the local bragging rights in a close encounter which was settled by a Lloyd Dyer strike on 52 minutes.
2015: First Round Ipswich 2 Stevenage 1 Drawn away for the first time, Stevenage were hoping for a repeat of their success over Ipswich two years previously and they made a great start when a Christophe Berra own goal on 34 minutes put them ahead. But it was to be a disappointing night for Teddy Sheringham’s men as second half goals from Josh Yorwerth and Jay Tabb proved enough.
2016: First Round Ipswich 0 Stevenage 1 Amazingly Stevenage were drawn away to Ipswich yet again and under the management of Darren Sarll they made it two wins from three against the Stevenage FC v Southend Utd
2017: First Round Millwall 2 Stevenage 0 Stevenage made the visit to the Championship side knowing they would be in for a tough battle and so it proved as in front of 3,096 at The Den it was a second half brace from Tom Elliott which proved to be decisive.
2018: First Round Norwich 3 Stevenage 1 Stevenage were drawn against another East Anglian giant when they made the trip to Norwich and came close to taking the Canaries all the way. Although Marco Stiepermann put the home side ahead, a stunning free-kick from James Ball was enough to bring Stevenage level. Sadly stubborn resistance from the visitors was broken on 83 minutes when Christoph Zimmermann netted and Teemu Pukki made sure with another a minute from time. www.stevenagefc.com | 17

elcome back to all the Stevenage FC Fans to what we hope will be a great performance from our senior side under the Lamex floodlights this evening. The Academy season is now up and running and there has been lots going at Shephalbury recently. Most immediately I’d like to congratulate Alex Revell and Ronnie Henry on collecting their first three points in the Youth Alliance League. The Youth Team saw off Gillingham at Bragbury End at the weekend 1-0 thanks to a well-deserved goal from left wing back Cadell Fraser-Robinson. Meanwhile back at Shephalbury our under 16 side provided spectators with a thrilling game against Gillingham coming back from 5-3 down with only minutes remaining to draw 5-5. Fin Johnson with a hat-trick in the season opener. On to coaching, we have no fewer than 9 Academy coaches enrolled on FA courses this coming season. 4 UEFA A Licence, 3 Advanced Youth Award learners and 2 coaches in the final stages of completing their UEFA B licence. In September we will be hosting a Hertfordshire FA CPD event for level 2 and 3 (UEFA B) coaches. Focusing on how our youth team are being developed at Shephalbury Sports Academy. More details will hopefully be released for all those interested on the club’s social streams in the coming days. Ieuan Lewis our Youth Development Phase lead coach is now the holder of his second level 4 FA coaching qualification (now holding the Advanced Youth Award for U12-U16 player along with the UEFA A licence). Ieuan works with a very special group of players in our Academy and is responsible for linking the younger ages (U9-U12 led by Jimmy Martin) to Stevenage FC v Southend Utd
the older players (who are coached by Revs and Ronnie). The skills required to create such a bridge are vital for our Academy. We received compensation from a Premier League club for one player in this phase last year but want to press on and create more pathways for these young players to play in our youth team and then eventually our senior side. Ieuan is part of a joinedup process that exposes players to the right game at the right time in the right position! This involves the senior side and like last season, recently a 14-year-old player took part in training with some of our senior players. We started three U16 players in the Youth Team opener on Saturday along with introducing the previously mentioned 14-year-old from the bench later in the game! I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Glenn Quirke (Academy Operations Manager) who sadly, is soon leaving the club to explore a new and exciting vocation within football. Glenn has been with the club since 2012 and behind the scenes has been an integral part of the Academy’s success. Back to tonight, good luck to Dino his staff and all the players. Enjoy the game

FOUNDATION Foundation Golf Day Returns Inspired by the historic Tiger Woods comeback at Augusta, Stevenage FC Foundation are announcing their own comeback with the return of their charity golf day in partnership with Mill Green Golf Club in Welwyn Garden City on Wednesday 18th September. The fundraiser is being supported by Stevenage FC players and staff who will be involved in the day. With 54 spaces available to the general public, businesses or other organisations. WOMEN MEET SOME OF OUR NEW SIGNINGS Highly rated Goalkeeper, Téa Oldroyd joins us from Garston Ladies. Téa has made several first team appearances already this pre-season and we’re all very excited to have Téa in the squad. The club welcomes Lisa Nixon from Luton Town Ladies. Lisa is a very technical centre midfielder who will bring a wealth of experience. Lisa has played twice already this season and we’re looking forward to seeing her in action throughout the season.
Goalkeeper Libby Trueman signs from Watford FC Girls. Libby is a young keeper who has great potential and will join up with the Development squad for the season. Welcome to the club, Libby! Tricky winger, Sofia Carpenter signs for us from Ashford Ladies FC. Sofia, who made several appearances at the end of last season is a pacey and skilful winger who will add flair to the side.
The club are delighted to announce that forward, Jenny Nagle has signed from AFC Wimbledon. Jenny has scored twice already in pre-season and will be a great asset to the team.
Mickie Palfreman has signed from Spurs Women. A strong, young defender, Mickie will join the Development team this season.

SA Membership now open Membership application for the 2019-20 season is now open. There are various ways in which you can join. Forms are available on match days from the manned SA points around the stadium, and they’re also available from the club shop. Students & under 18’s is £10 and family memberships are available at £30.

this Southend team was a goalkeeper who was told he was too short when he was at Southampton and then released by Southend, before returning to the club. Darryl Flahavan made two astonishing saves from Ronaldo to deny United at the end of the first half and then again in the second. Of course, the game is remembered more so for Eastwood’s winning goal, a sumptuous free-kick in the 27th minute.
League Cup History
Easily the most memorable game in the League Cup for Southend was the Fourth Round giant killing of Manchester United in 2006, sending the Blues to the Quarter Finals of the competition and the furthest the club had progressed in their history. Man United’s starting eleven consisted of 10 internationals with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Darren Fletcher and many more high profile names. Going toe-to-toe with them were Freddy Eastwood, Kevin Maher and Mark Gower. But the star of

Man United threatened Southend’s goal for large portions of the game but Eastwood’s strike proved enough at Roots Hall for the then Championship side to go through to the last eight and set up another huge encounter that Southend fans would be able to savour, whatever the result. Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane were the challengers this time, and if it wasn’t for a controversial Jermain Defoe extra-time goal five minutes from the end, Blues fans could conceivably be talking of another giant killing. They battled hard all game and were able to take the Premier League club all the way to the 115th minute, after another great performance from Flahavan, but a marginally offside Defoe denied Steve Tilson’s charges a penalty shoot-out, which was the least they deserved on the night. SHRIMPERS SEASON START The current manager of Southend United is Kevin Bond who took over the role initially for the remaining six games of the 2018/19 season with the Essex side in trouble at foot of the League One standings. Bond was then appointed manager on a permanent basis in May after keeping the team up on the last day of the season. The Roots Hall outfit will be hoping to avoid another season like the last which was littered with crucial injuries throughout the squad. Sam Barratt, Tom Hopper and Lewis Gard all suffered season-ending injuries, while Harry Kyprianou ruptured his Achilles in late November. Harry Lennon, Jason Demetriou and Luke Hyam also spent large spells out throughout the campaign. Stevenage FC v Southend Utd
It all meant the hopes of pushing for promotion quickly turned to battling for survival, but having achieved that in the most dramatic of circumstances, with Humphrys the masked hero scoring an 87th minute winner against Sunderland on the final day of last season, they’ll quickly forget about all that went before them coming into this season. So far in the summer Bond has brought in six new signings to bolster the squad. Prolific non-league striker Brandon Goodship, Australian International captain Mark Milligan, Dundee’s player of the season Nathan Ralph, Irishmen Joe Shaughnessy, full-back Andre Blackman and League Cup winner in 2011 Liam Ridgewell have all come in so far. Southend have had a difficult start losing both of their League One games, they fell one nil in the season opener against Coventry City in a game played at Birmingham and suffered a 3-1 reverse on Saturday at home to Blackpool. www.stevenagefc.com | 29
