THE
STEVE EVANS
Firstly, I would like to welcome everyone from Sutton United and Matt Gray to this evening’s game at The Lamex Stadium. Every point in League Two has to be earned, nothing is easy. Crawley have got a talented squad so we knew it would be tough in advance. We have a very talented group of lads and the desire each of them to play and win is fantastic. I am so proud of them. It is interesting when you compare the league at a similar stage last season. Barrow and Harrogate were up at the top end early last campaign before they both finished lower down the table so there can be no room for complacency. No team can or should think about anything over than trying to get three points in the next game.
I have huge respect for Sutton United as a club, the manager and the players they have. They are a team who can and do beat the best teams regularly, so we need to be focused on everything we do.
The boys are full of confidence.
Competition for a place in the team is fierce, and whilst everyone is fit that is also the case with the substitutes.
Playing at home is always beneficial and our supporters are more than playing a big part.
The lads get told every week that three points now is the same as three points towards the latter stages of the season, but perhaps it just feels more.
In all honesty, we can only focus on Sutton United and take it one game at a time.

CHRIS ROSS
Welcome to The Lamex Stadium for our Sky Bet League Two match against Sutton United.
After another incredible month on the pitch, the team led by Steve Evans and his management team sees us occupy third in the table with only three points separating us from the top.
We return from Crawley with a fantastic hard-fought victory thanks to a Jordan Roberts stunner and a late Luke Norris penalty.
Hopefully tonight under the lights here at The Lamex we can keep our winning run going and continue to take our momentum into a busy run of fixtures through October.
A reminder that ahead of tonight’s game you can visit our Club Shop from midday
and The 76 Lounge from 5.30pm all the way up to kick-off.
The Club has been developing off the pitch too. Over the last couple of weeks, we have announced new & exciting partnerships which can be read in more detail on our website with popular retailer Footasylum and local esports specialists NEWVU Gaming.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the Club already this season and we hope you enjoy the game!

FROM THE ARCHIVES
It was the first home game of the new season for Boro and while clashes with local rivals the Poppies normally proved blood and thunder affairs, this petered out into a goalless stalemate. With either side poised to make a challenge for the Football League as favourites for promotion, this was a disappointing affair as chances proved few and far between.

Black History Month is a cause close to Roland Butcher’s heart. It helps that he was a pioneer: the first black man to play cricket for England. And it is a great source of pride to the Barbadosborn man who came to Stevenage as a teenager but went on to win county titles for and all-conquering Middlesex side led by Mike Brearley.
His Test debut on March 13, 1981, was both an inspiring moment for youngsters up and down the country as well as an emotional return to his homeland where his love for the game was established. He grew up in a female-dominated household, among Butcher’s first experience of cricket came aged 12 when his cousin Monica took him to watch Australia take on the West Indies in the Aussies’ 1964-95 tour.
He watched Bill Lawry and Bob Simpson become the first opening pair to score double centuries in the same. “I would play morning, noon and night with my peers, the bigger boys,” he told The Cricketer. “The household was all women, my grandmother, aunts, etc. They liked cricket, but in terms of knowing much about it not so much.
His grandmother eventually submitted to his desire for greater freedom. His
parents had fled to England as part of the Windrush generation during the 1950s and were keen that he and sister Margaret joined them. Come 1967, they made the move across the Atlantic.
“I arrived in England and it was a strange place,” he said. “In Barbados the sun shines 365 days of the year, it is warm and it is very much an outdoor life. I arrive in England and it is, even though it is May, absolutely freezing and that was a culture shock.
“I had no friends at all and there was only me and my sister. My family in England there were another four children. We didn’t know each other apart from pictures.
“I didn’t play any football in Barbados but as I started to make friends in the area I very quickly gravitated to their passion and fell in love with that too. It was through that that I got back into cricket, through football. “
He was kicking about with his mates at a Stevenage park when the town cricket team set up for a third XI match and were a player short. He dashed home, got some whites and that was the start of his rise to stardom.
He had 16 years with Middlesex joining at the age of 20 ahead of the 1974 season and a career that would see him earn
three England test caps and play in three ODI games in 1980/81. He made 251 firstclass appearances for Middlesex, scoring 10,935 runs at an average of 31.69
Roland has since moved back to Barbados, where he has been involved in cicket and football. An Arsenal fan, he got into coaching and worked for Brendan Rogers at Reading. He also ran soccer schools for the Gunners and has written coaching manuals.
This summer he has been in the UK for some commentary work up and down the country as well as running some diversity and inclusion seminars – and speaking out loudly on black sportspeoples’ issues. He was very vocal about the racism scandal at Yorkshire. “Talk is cheap and promises are a comfort to a fool. I want to see action,” he said. “They’ve got a lot of
work to do, a lot of people are very much on their case because a lot of people feel that they really have had their head in the sand but they’ve got a great opportunity now to put things right.
“They can really set the tone for the future and not just send a message for cricket but lead some of the other sports who at this moment in time will be struggling with their own problems with diversity.
“You’re going to have persons from all walks of background involved in sport. If you can get a level playing field for everyone then everybody can benefit from that.”
You can read Roland’s story in Town’s Got Talent, on sale in the club shop and at the Museum. The book highlights the many sports stars associated with Stevenage.

ON THIS DAY: 04 OCTOBER
It used to be goals galore on this date in history for Boro’; four wins out of the first five and a return of 17 goals for – and, yes, that include our Bob Lord Trophy faux pas against Farnborough in 1994. Higham Town, Kingsbury Town and Marlow were all duly dealt with in sweeping fashion, before Gateshead rocked up in 1997 and were given a tonking.
But what happened? Did someone say or do something to upset the footballing gods?
In the five matches played on 4 October since we demolished the Heed at the Lamex, Boro’ have lost five out of five. OK, that includes a little bit of artistic licence as it includes two matches we lost on penalties. “Lost”, however, is very much the operative word. Both were cup games and both produced a winner for admin purposes. At least the upset that saw us out of the Football League Trophy to lower league AFC Wimbledon was a proper cup tie…
In amid that, we’ve been on the wrong end of the result on the road at Halifax Town and Torquay United. At home, a late Alex Wall winner saw Luton Town go home happy on this day in 2014. Not a sight you usually want to see, is it?
So, to the Class of 2022 – can we get out of our 4 October rut here tonight?

IT’S SUTTON UNITED AGAIN…
Our head-to-head record against Boro’ failed in three attempts to defeat Sutton United last season. It’s the first time since 1991-2 that we’ve not been on the right side of the scoreline at least once – and, back then, we were one division below them. More importantly, last season’s results ensure we come into today’s match with the head-to-head looking relatively balanced. In 11 past en-counters, both sides have four wins to their name. In addition, the goal count is 14 for and 14 against. Of course, this all depends on whether you count our Papa John’s Trophy exit on penalties to be a defeat or a draw –based on the 0-0 scoreline that preceded spot kicks. If it’s the latter, make it three defeats and four draws.
MAGIC MOMENT: Diadora League Premier Division –13 February 1993
ON BOTH SIDES…
It’s a captain’s edition this time around – our look at players who wore both shirts taking us back back into Boro’s non-league days. You could put two full line-ups out with the lads who turned out for them and us. It’d mainly be forwards and wingers – and there’s only one stopper that we can think of at the moment (Alan Julian). But the two names you’d expect to take the armbands in that combined exhibition match are Paul Barrowcliff and Jason Goodliffe.
In the case of the former, Sutton United was one of Barrowcliff’s previous clubs before he arrived at Broadhall Way. It was a brief stay at the Us wedged in between spells at Kingstonian and Aylesbury United.
Of course, it wouldn’t quite be as successful as his title-winning time with Boro’. But that’s how it goes.
Up until the 1992-3 season, our only encounters with Us had pitted us against a stronger opponent. But this is the time when the balance of power in our own private tete-a-tete started to truly shift. For the Us, the 1990-1 season ended in relegation from the Conference. For us, meanwhile, we secured promotion to Diadora League Division One. And it was followed by promotion to the Premier Division, where the Us had tried – but so far failed – to return up. Mark Smith was Boro’s match winner as we overcame the Us for the first time. It was our fourth meeting with them – and the first at Broadhall Way. Symbolically, however, it could be said to be the moment that our respective paths had crossed. We may have ended up finishing below them in the table come the end of the season. But the following year saw us land the title… and promotion to the Conference. It wouldn’t be until 1999 that the Us made their return.
On the other side, we have Jason Goodliffe – a loyal servant to the Boro’ as player and as coach. More than 150 games was his final haul by the time he moved on for good (as a player) in 2007 after six years with us. After joining Rushden & Diamonds, Jase moved to AFC Wimbledon for a couple of years. His next step in 2009? Sutton United.
There’s one more former Boro’ captain who has turned out for both sides, by the way. Steve Watson. Remember him?

Good evening and welcome to the Lamex for tonight’s fixture with Sutton United. Let the winning home run continue. Firstly, I want to start with a massive welcome to our new Under 9s here at Stevenage FC academy, A Michael, C Michael, J Robinson, J Lincoln, F Coke, O Scarr who were the core 6 that we committed to from the end of their under 8 season. on top of these 6 we have 2 recent additions to the group J Sharland & A Campbell who have impressed all the staff at the academy to earn themselves a registration with us.
Secondly as with most Football clubs turnover of staff can be high and this summer has been no different as stated in my previous and in new Academy manager Jorden Gibson’s last programme
notes we have had a lot of changes to the staffing at the academy. So, I would like to introduce to the Foundation Phase Rob Yates who returns to the academy after a period away and will assist Matt Pring with the Under 9s, Spyros Mylordos has been recruited from our fantastic and ever-growing Pathway programme and will take our Under 10s. Christian Leite joins us to take the Under 11s for the 22/23 season and another progression from the pathway Joshua Newman takes on our under 12 group in their last year as foundation phase players. I am really excited with this group of young coaches who as well as the players are keen to learn and develop their craft of coaching. Now we are just over 6 weeks into the season we are now starting to ramp up the fixtures on our young players with Fixtures West Ham, Watford, Aston Villa & Bournemouth coming up following up from our preseason fixture already hosted by Tottenham Hotspur all they fixtures give us a chance to test ourselves against the best in the country as well as give invaluable experiences to our coaches and players
I hope you enjoy the game, make some noise, and COME ON BORO!

FCW
Stevenage FCW picked up their second win on the road this season after a solid day’s work in Essex against Bowers & Pitsea Ladies. With the bulk of the hard work completed in the first half ‘Boro moved up from sixth to third in the league as they attempted to keep leaders Luton in sight. It took only eight minutes for Stevenage to break the deadlock. A throw in from Anna Re was contested by Amy Gooderham, who won the ball for Kelsey Millen to break into the box on the right hand side and square a succulent ball for Amy Makewell to fire high into the net from twelve yards. It was her first goal of the season and Millen’s first assist for the team. Stevenage were rarely troubled in the early parts of the game, but they did require a selfless block from Nicole Farmer to ensure Ray remained untested. Following an opposition corner, Stevenage rallied and Becky Shephard set off a counter-attacking move, which Gooderham led down the right flank. After running the length of the pitch and rounding the defender, she crossed low for Jodie Bellinger to turn home her fifth career goal for Stevenage at the far post.
Celine Ray was called into action on
the half hour mark with a stunning save from Eloise Ives, whose powerful shot looked certain to ripple the net. Instead, Stevenage increased their lead to three when Shianne Swarres won the ball in midfield and once again set the impressive Gooderham free to beat her player and pull the ball back for Shephard to rifle home. Hannah Nebbitt had two excellent opportunities from free kicks in dangerous areas, which came close to extending the lead further, and Ray had to save down low from Maddie Thomas in a rare golden opportunity for the opponents. Instead, it came down to Shephard to steal the headlines yet again. After Gooderham was fouled on the edge of the box, Shephard sent a low free kick into the back of the net, via the far post, for her sixth goal in five games. The only blot in the copybook came when Ray saw her clearance collected by Millie Isherwood who reacted quicker to send the ball into an empty net. These two teams will do it all again this weekend, when they meet in the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round.

FORM GUIDE
Sutton have had a mixed start to the current campaign and sit in 14th place as they visit Boro tonight.
Prior to their postponed visit last month
they were heading to Boro on a run of three straight wins but that form has dipped. They have now lost four of their last five, the most recent a 1-0 reverse at Gillingham.
After their impressive debut season in the EFL last term, this looked to be the difficult second campaign as they began with two defeats and a draw in their first three games.
A 1-1 opening day draw with Newport and a reverse at Doncaster was followed up by a 1-0 Carabao Cup exit at MK Dons.
The Us finally broke their league duck with a 1-0 win at home to Barrow and lost just once on their way to a 2-1 home win over Harrogate.
Tellingly however our visitors don’t look too good on their travels so far, losing six and drawing one of their four road trips in all competitions so far.
LAST 5 SEASONS
MEET THE BOSS:
Matt Gray was appointed to his first managerial role at the beginning of May 2019 following the resignation of Paul Doswell, having originally joined the coaching staff the previous December, his second season in charge saw Sutton earn promotion to the EFL as National League champions, and he then guided U’s to an 8th placed finish in League Two last season as well as a Wembley appearance in the Papa Johns Trophy final. He previously had spells as assistant manager at Eastleigh, Aldershot and Crawley, while as a player he began his career with Tottenham and played for Cardiff, Hayes and Havant & Waterlooville before being forced to retire early through injury.
ONE TO WATCH
Harry Beautyman is an attacking midfield player who rejoined Sutton in January 2018 from Boro, he originally joined U’s in summer 2011 after being released by Leyton Orient, where he had been reserve team captain, and went on to score 24 goals in 105 games over the next two seasons, winning the Supporters’ Club Player of the Year award in his first season and earning recognition at England C level. He joined Welling in 2013 and subsequently earned a move into the Football League with Peterborough the following year. He spent the 201617 campaign with Northampton before joining Boro at the start of the following season. His seventeen goals from midfield three seasons ago earned him a clean sweep of the club player of the year awards for which he was eligible, and he was twice named in the National League Team of the Season.

LATEST NEWS
WELCOME
It was only nine months ago that I composed my previous notes about the visit of Sutton United, and here they are, back again on their sojourn to our part of North Hertfordshire. I bid a warm welcome to Gareth Miller and the rest of his committee who comprise the Sutton United Supporters’ Trust (SUST). Hope you guys all have a pleasant visit to Stevenage this afternoon. Did you know... that former Prime Minister John Major was born and bred in Sutton?
NEWS FROM THE FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION
West Ham United supporters are boycotting food and drink at the London Stadium in a stand against unprecedented price hikes introduced by the ground’s caterers. A boycott, organised by the West Ham United Supporters’ Trust (WHUST) has seen concession stands go unused at matches. The club too are unhappy with the prices, which are set by their landlords, the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC), and catering partner Delaware North. £2.85 for a bottle of water, £3.45 for a cup of tea and £5 for a coke in what is the second poorest borough in London has made fans fume.
West Ham United’s move to the London Stadium was a controversial one and the lack of independent pubs, shops, street vendors and other matchday mainstays around the new ground has exacerbated this season’s problems with food and drink. Sue Watson, the chair of WHUST stated: “We’re in dialogue with the club to improve the walkways to the ground. We want them to reflect the history, heritage and culture of the club more distinctly. The whole atmosphere and ambiance around the ground has to improve.”
MEMORY LANE
Taken on the pitch at Broadhall Way, who of us can forget the ‘imposing’ south end with its steep grassed bank behind the goalthe one that young children used to love to roll down, particularly during a boring game! Note the team, which comprised two future Boro players, Mark Vooght and club legend Martin Gittings. Now, here’s a “where are they now” poser. If anyone can contribute, then I’d love to hear from them. Do contact me here Lloyd@ SFCSA.co.uk if you can help.

‘LOVE FOOTBALL. PROTECT THE GAME’
A message about anti-social and criminal behaviour
To mark the new season, we want to make you aware of new measures being taken across all of football to ensure everyone can have a safe and enjoyable experience. We are supporting strong action from the FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle anti-social and criminal behaviours that put all of us at risk.
This reflects the seriousness of the risks to fans and staff – pyros can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius and cause lifechanging injuries, while entering the pitch endangers players, managers and match officials.
We know those who commit these illegal acts do not represent the majority of supporters.
