f not the greatest day in the history of the club, this has to be the greatest win witnessed by Boro fans. And what a win it was, Football League new boys Boro were sitting in 13th place in Division Two, just getting used to their new found status when Premier League Newcastle came to town. A thumping would have damaged their fragile confidence, but Boro had revenge in mind for the fourth round headlines made 13 years previously. And revenge they got, as Graham Westley’s men put in a remorseless performance, looking the more likely to score in a goalless but

thrilling first half. Stacy Long opened the scoring when he forced the ball in off Mike Williamson on 50 minutes and five minutes later Michael Bostwick doubled the advantage. Newcastle struggled to find a way back into the game and when sub Cheik Tiote was sent off all looked lost. In a feisty finish Joey Barton did lash the Toon back into the game however but as the visitors went in search of a leveller, it was Boro who had the last laugh, Peter Winn running through to guide Boro into the next round. BORO
HISTORY FA CUP ROUND THREE: A BORO’ LOOK BACK FA Cup Round Three. For so many non-league teams, this is almost like a footballing holy grail. It’s the chance for the so-called minnows to go up against the big sharks. If the draw is kind to you, it can be a huge money-spinner. And we were once in that position. Not only did Boro’ have to get through the qualifying rounds, we’d also have to dodge the old hands in the lower reaches of the Football League – just for a chance to pull a Premier League side out of the hat. In 1996-97, we started our FA Cup run in September’s First Qualifying Round with a win at Arlesey Town. By the time we were drawn at home to Birmingham City in Round Three, we’d played eight games – needing replays in two of the rounds. But we didn’t get our big day on home turf. For safety reasons, we switched the tie to St Andrews. Not that it would deter the Boro’ faithful from making ourselves at home for the afternoon. Sadly, the result didn’t go our way. One year later, we repeated the feat; this time heading west to Swindon Town, who had been sitting at the top of the second tier not so long before our arrival. In the howling wind and icy gales, Boro’ put in a display that now counts as one of our most glorious days. Who can forget Fraser Digby’s goal kicks being sent back towards his goal by the wind; one of which ended at the feet of Giuliano Grazioli to send us through to the Fourth Round for the first time. It was a while before we’d make it through to Round Three again after that. It was 13
16
years, in fact. But it was worth the wait in our opinion. First, there was the amazing 3-1 home win against Newcastle United in front of the ESPN TV crews. And the following season, it was our 1-0 win at Reading’s Madjeski Stadium that made up for our Round Four defeat to the Royals the year before. In an incredible era for our club, these were both two standout highlights. Even when our fortunes started to slide, we still managed to come away from Doncaster Rovers with a Round Three win in January 2014. At the time, you could even regard that as a mini-upset too. Donny were battling at the wrong end of the Championship, while we were running into our own struggles at the bottom of League Two. It’s the most recent time we’ve come out on top at this stage of the competition though. In our most recent Round Three outing now three years ago in 2018, it was Reading again(!) who came calling. Back then, the Royals were struggling in the Championship – much like Donny in 2014. Sadly, it wasn’t an opportunity we took. After a goalless draw at the Lamex, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson scored a hattrick in the replay to send us packing. It’s actually our worst result at this stage of the FA Cup. And, on reflection, maybe that isn’t so bad for our humble club?
ON THIS DAY: 09 JANUARY It feels like the fixtures can come thick and fast at the start of a new calendar year. But the ninth day isn’t a traditional hotspot in the footballing schedule when we look back over the years. Today’s FA
Stevenage FC v Swansea City
Cup tie against the Swans is only the sixth time Boro’ will have walked out into the field of battle on this day; the last occasion coming back in 2016 when a goal from sub and loanee striker Armand Gnanduillet couldn’t stop us losing 2-1 on the road at Mansfield Town. You then have to go back into the previous century for the second-most recent fixture on this day. It marked the start of Richard Hill’s reign as Stevenage Borough manager. But the result isn’t one he’ll want to remember; a 1-0 defeat at Farnborough not getting his time in charge off to the ideal start. But today hasn’t always been a day of defeat for Boro’. Nor have we always been away from home. It just needs us to go a little further into the archives to find the wins - and the home games. It starts with our 2-0 FA Trophy Round One win over Bath City in 1993. Going back a few years into the late 1980s, we also registered two league wins in as many years (1988 and 1989) to ensure that we can at least reflect on a spotless home record on 9 January. 1988 Stevenage Borough 2-0 Worthing, Vauxhall Opel League Division Two North 1989 Stevenage Borough 3-0 Vauxhall Motors (Luton), Vauxhall Opel League Division Two North 1993 Stevenage Borough 2-0 Bath City, FA Trophy Round One 1999 Farnborough 1-0 Stevenage Borough, Football Conference 2016 Mansfield Town 2-1 Stevenage, Sky Bet League Two
YOU AGAIN? SWANSEA CITY How times have changed in the last 18 years. By the end of the 2002-03 campaign, Graham Westley had steered Boro’ off the relegation rocks and into
www.stevenagefc.com
the relative safety of mid-table. In the old Division Three (now League Two), however, Swansea City went into their final day clash with Hull City needing a win to avoid joining us in the Conference. They did so; winning 4-2 and sending Exeter City down instead. But it’s the closest we’ve come to being in the same division. Not that we hadn’t already met for the first time, you understand? Earlier that season, the Swans arrived at Broadhall Way in the LDV Trophy Round One. For all our difficulties in the league, goals from Kirk Jackson and Richard Pacquette allowed Boro’ to spring a surprise on our Football League opponents. It felt as if the cup gods had got a thing going for us and them at the time. The following campaign, it’d be our turn to make the long trip along the M4 as the FA Cup Round Two draw took us to the old Vetch Field. Both sides were seeing better fortunes on the pitch after the worries of the previous season. And a spirited Boro’ team took the match to our hosts. An inspired Lee Trundle had no plans on losing that day, however; guiding the Swans to a hard-fought 2-1 win. We’ll skip past the decision to rule out Boro’s late equaliser that afternoon for a dubious offside, though. For a long time after that, we had no reason to meet again. By the time we were promoted to the Football League, the Swans were on the cusp of – and then reached – the Premier League. In pyramid terms, we were now as far apart from one another as we’d been since the 1990s. But, out of nowhere, the cup gods shone on us again in 2018. Well, that’s if you reckon the Checkatrade Trophy counts towards our head-to-head record? Our group stage match against the Swans was technically against their U21s, which we comfortably won by five goals. It might not matter as much as other competitions in the grand scheme of things. It does, however, mean we come into this latest cup clash with the Swans with two wins from two on home turf.

ast year, the Burger King® brand announced it was sponsoring Stevenage FC with the goal (no pun intended) of turning a realworld League Two team, into the biggest club in the online gaming world... The Stevenage Challenge campaign was a huge success and now, the home of the Whopper® is doing the same with the club’s women’s team. To support inclusivity in the sport, the Burger King® brand is sponsoring Stevenage FC Women under the same terms and conditions, and at the same level, as the men’s team. As part of the sponsorship, Burger King created the Burger Queen® logo, symbolising the sponsorship of the women’s team of Stevenage FC. The new logo will be proudly displayed on the team’s kit throughout the 20/21 season and to celebrate the launch of the sponsorship, the site of the Stevenage Burger King® restaurant has been rebranded to ‘Burger Queen®’.

Playing for Stevenage FC is hard. Playing for the women’s team shouldn’t be harder. To show support, fans can purchase the limited-edition Burger Queen kit from the official Stevenage FC store at stevenagefcshop.com. “After successfully spotlighting the talent of the Stevenage FC men’s team last year, we wanted to do the same for the women’s team in 2020,” said Soco Nunez, Marketing Director of Burger King® UK. “The women’s team faces the same challenges and hurdles as the men’s team and it’s only fair that it receive the same support from our brand with an equal sponsorship.” “We are thrilled to be continuing our partnership with Burger King® and the support that the brand is showing for the women’s team is unmatched,” said Stevenage FC CEO Alex Tunbridge. “The sponsorship from Burger King® will be used to help grow the women’s program and support the team.” Purchase your Burger Queen Shirt now by vising www.stevenagefcshop.com

HOW DID YOU GET INTO FOOTBALL? My mum and I are massive Chelsea fans so I was watching and going to games from a very young age. I guess she wanted me to get an experience she never got as a child but luckily for her I fell in love with it and still am! From then I started playing at primary school and have been playing ever since.
WHO INSPIRED YOU TO PLAY FOOTBALL? I think my mum obviously had an influence but just the enjoyment I got out of it from a young age was incredible. I think in a way I inspired myself. I already enjoyed playing with the boys at primary school, so when I joined Tottenham Ladies at the age of 9, playing with other girls who were in the same position as you was a whole new board game. I think that was also the age when I started watching and going to women’s football so I was definitely inspired by seeing some legends of the game up close and personal. It was something I’d never experienced before, it was different but a good different as all I’d ever known was just playing with the boys at break times! From that moment I knew I wanted to keep playing and enjoying my new chapter to see where my football journey would take me; plus no other girls used to play football so I quite enjoyed the spotlight and boasting about my games against some of the ‘big teams’ to all my class.
24
Stevenage FC v Swansea City
WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE FEMALE FOOTBALLER AND WHY? Steph Houghton. It hasn’t changed since the last time I got asked this question about 5/6 years ago! I think she’s an incredible player. Defenders never used to get as much recognition as they do now as I’ve always been a defender since I started playing so I guess I saw her more of a role model than some other players in different positions. I just think every aspect of her game is quality. Her leadership, strength those last ditch tackles, her reading of the game is just everything I still aspire to be now when playing. And she strikes a wicked freekick, which I may need to work on!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOTBALL MOMENT AS A PLAYER? There’s been so many! A few cup finals I played in when I was younger are up there but it has to be my first year of senior football at Tottenham Ladies in the Development Team. We were 5-0 down at half-time in the league cup and we managed to make it 5-5 in the second
www.stevenagefc.com
half then went on to win 6-5 in extra-time, it was something you’d do on Fifa and not in real life!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE YOUNG GIRLS STARTING OUT THEIR FOOTBALL JOURNEY? Make sure you enjoy it! It doesn’t matter what ability you are, just make sure you are having fun is the main thing. Be patient with yourself and keep practicing, even just setting yourself mini targets when you practice really does help! There’s much more opportunities now at every level in the women’s and girl’s game from professional to non-professional, so don’t give up! And even if you decide that playing football isn’t for you but you enjoy it, there are still so many ways to be involved in football! I’m lucky to have the pleasure of being a football coach as well as playing so I’m sure there is something for you out there! Enjoyment is the key one for me. FOLLOW THE WOMEN:

WELCOME CLUB MATTERS Founded in 1912 as Swansea Town, our visitors today have enjoyed one name change and two home grounds in their history. After formation, they joined the Southern League along with a number of other Welsh clubs and played their home games at the Vetch Field. The Swans benefited from some chaos at the end of the First World War as the
loss of a number of clubs and the axing of the second division saw them in the First Division of the Southern League. In 1920 they then benefited from the expansion of the Football League and financial issues elsewhere as they earned a place in the newly formed Third Division that year. This was followed by a place in Division Three (South) the following year. They made quick progress, reaching the Second Division of the Football League for the first time in 1925 and a year later the semi-final of the FA Cup, losing to eventual winners Bolton. Either side of the Second World War Swansea maintained their place in the

second and third tiers of the Football League set-up but were never able to reach the highest level. After Swansea gained a new status as a city the club changed its name to Swansea City to reflect this in 1969. From 1977 to 1986 Swansea enjoyed a remarkable rise and fall when John Toshack took over the reins of the side in the fourth division. Almost successive promotions meant that just four years later in August 1981 Swansea took their place in the top tier for the first time in their history. They opened the campaign with a 5-1 win over Leeds courtesy of a Bob Latchford hat-trick and finished the season in a creditable sixth place. Sadly a combination of on-field failures and financial problems off the field hit the club hard and by 1986 they were back in the bottom division. A series of takeovers and boardroom unrest dogged the club in the intervening years before the move from The Vetch to the newly built 20,000 seat Liberty Stadium in 2005. Theee years later in 2008, under Roberto
Martinez, the Swans reached the second tier for the first time in 24 years and in 2011 under Brendan Rogers they reached the Premier League for the first time in their history, also becoming the first Welsh side to play in the newly reformed league. In 2013 Swansea won the League Cup, beating Bradford 5-0 in the final and earning a Europa League campaign the following season which was only halted by Napoli. After seven successive seasons in the Premier League, Swansea now find themselves back in the second tier though they have started well this season, currently sitting in second place, four points behind leaders Norwich. In the cup they have a poorer record, having exited the League Cup at the first stage with a 2-0 defeat at Newport.
www.stevenagefc.com
THE BOSS Steve Cooper was confirmed as Swansea City’s head coach in June 2019, taking over the reins following Graham Potter’s departure to Brighton. The 39-year-old left his position as coach of England’s World Cup winning Under-17 national team to sign a three-year contract at the Liberty Stadium. Former defender Cooper – the son of ex-top-flight referee Keith – was on Wrexham’s books as a youngster before joining the club’s academy coaching setup, going on to achieve the UEFA Pro Licence coaching certificate at the age of just 26. After becoming Head of Youth at Wrexham, the Pontypridd-born coach moved to Liverpool in 2008 and became Academy Manager in 2011. He led the Young Lions to the final of the 2017 European Championship, where they lost to Spain on penalties, but they gained revenge later in the year by coming from 2-0 down to beat the same opponents 5-2 in the World Cup final. The England side that day included the
likes of Phil Foden, Rhian Brewster, Morgan Gibbs-White and Callum HudsonOdoi, while Jadon Sancho was also in the squad for the tournament.
WATCH OUT FOR
Jamal Lowe - The 26-year-old striker has been almost an ever-present for the Swans this season as they have powered their way up the league. With eight goals to his name, the former Wigan and Portsmouth front man has also made his name closer to home with appearances for Barnet, Hemel Hempstead and St Albans.

LATEST NEWS
WELCOME Well, “hello” to this afternoon’s guests, Swansea City in the 3rd round of the FA Cup Round. How well I remember travelling to the old Vetch Field stadium in 2003, the last time our two clubs met in this competition. My memories of that visit still angst me to this day, and can best be described in just two words: “LEE TRUNDLE”. A warm welcome to the players and officials of Swansea in what is sure to be an exciting game.
TOMMY DOCHERTY I was most saddened to learn of the passing of Tommy Docherty last week. “The Doc” was one of those really great football managers who I looked up to in my formative years, alongside the likes of Bill Shankly, Don Revie and Brian Clough. I remember Tommy Docherty coming to Stevenage. It was during a winter’s evening in the late 1980’s (I think) and he had come to give a talk to members of the Stevenage Borough Social Club, which at the time was located on Broadhall Way. As events turned out, the weather progressively got worse and worse and only 17 people turned up. Irrespective, Tommy asked all those attending to sit in a horseshoe arrangement whilst he sat on a table – and entertained us for almost a couple of hours. I was both enthralled and captivated throughout. Memories are made of such things. RIP Tom.
HISTORY OF FOOTBALL IN STEVENAGE Firstly, may I take the opportunity to thank those of you who have taken the trouble to contact me regarding this new initiative. It gives me enormous pleasure to realise the interest this has generated
www.stevenagefc.com
amongst the Stevenage faithful and I encourage you to maintain the dialogue. This afternoon, I present to you the actual contract of a Stevenage footballer. In this case, the incumbent is Jose Whishaw. Jose joined Stevenage Athletic, attaining a 1st XI spot at just 15 years of age back in 1968. He went on to appear for Athletic on over 250 occasions until its demise in 1976, returning again to play for Boro in the 1980-81 season. Every player must be ‘contracted’ to play for the club, and this example is dated July 14th 1972. It came to me from the family of a life-long Stevenage fan (since deceased) who’d previously had the document mounted and framed – hence the faded writing effected by years of sunlight. If you have anything similar which you’d like to share, do contact me at Lloyd@SFCSA.co.uk LLOYD BRISCOE SA Chairman
