Stevenage were aiming to make it three wins in their last three as they welcomed a Swindon side that hadn’t won in their last three. However, the start to the match suggested the two teams’ form would have no impact on how this match unravelled.
Swindon started strongly and whipped in a cross towards the far post, although Matt Ritchie opted to nod the ball to the other side of the box, allowing midfielder Raffaele De Vita to spin and put Swindon 1-0 up within 17 minutes. Swindon’s lead doubled as Matt Ritchie
shot goal wards, nutmegging Boro’ goalkeeper Steve Arnold. The visitors then extended their lead even further before half time as Miles Storey was left unmarkedto head the ball in.
It ultimately became damage limitation for Stevenage in the second half, but in the 62ndminute Swindon’s had the final say whrn John Bostock threaded a pass through to Adam Rooney who drove his shot in making it 4-0 to Swindon, an almost unimaginable result at the start of the game.

F
or today’s Fan Focus, we had one of the most recognised supporter faces at the club.... Sir Matthew Farley.
FIRST GAME? YEAR, SEASON?
Myself and my Dad had been to a few Boro games in the early 2000’s.
From memory I still remember standing in the old North Terrace as a 10 year old boy watching Boro play Rochdale in the FA Cup back in 2004. I really fell in love with the football club after watching Boro play Hereford the season later in the Conference Play Offs. Me and my dad sat in the main stand for that game.
WHICH SECTION OF THE GROUND DO YOU NORMALLY WATCH THE MATCHES FROM?
I sit in the new North Stand. I absolutely LOVE IT. It feels like home. I made a promise that I would go in the new North Stand when it was first built and instantly fell in love with that stand. It’s such a different view at the club and has such a nice community of people that sit in there.
BEST MEMORY/MEMORIES OF SUPPORTING BORO?
Wow, what a question. There’s been so many. Seeing the club promoted to the EFL on that special day at Kidderminster will always be the standout, followed by winning at Old Trafford the year later in the League Two Play Off Final. But recently I’ve enjoyed some fantastic memories at Boro over the past 5 years. The 2-1 win at Portsmouth a few years back, the 2-1 win at Morecambe when Luke Wilkinson scored and even this season when Danny Rose scored in the 100th minute!
FAVOURITE ALL-TIME PLAYER (AND WHY)?
Again, such a difficult one to ask. I used to love watching Antony Elding, Steve Morison, George Boyd etc. But for me, it would have to be Mark Roberts. He just epitomises everything that we are as a club. What a leader, what a club legend, what a man.
FAVOURITE CURRENT PLAYER (AND WHY)?
I love the players we have at Boro this season and actually this team is one of my favourite Boro sides. My favourite player is Carl Piergianni. Ever since I watched the documentary on Salford a couple of years ago, I always thought he’d be a perfect fit for us. What a signing in the summer and has been such an integral part to our success so far.
WHY DO YOU LOVE BORO?
Honestly, Boro is my life. I’m so grateful to my dad for taking me all those years ago when I was a kid. I’ve been a supporter for 20 years and the football club has pretty much been my whole life. I live and breath Stevenage FC. I’ve been fortunate enough to have made so many friends through the club and when Boro play away we enjoy some city weekends. I’ve also been fortunate enough to host a Live show for the club through the COVID season and currently I’m host of The Stevenage FC Podcast. I go to absolutely every single game even if it’s the Herts Senior Cup, I love it. It’s my main hobby and is so good for my mental health as well.
FAVOURITE BORO SHIRT?
I’m actually going to say both shirts this season. The home kit has so much history from the style being the strip that was worn back in the 1990’s. It’s got a modernised image about it. I actually think this seasons away kit is the best one I’ve ever seen at the club. The purple is quality and to go along with that, we’re actually able to see the team win this season whilst wearing our away kit!
Black History Month is a cause close to Roland Butcher’s heart. It helps that he was a pioneer: the first black man to play cricket for England. And it is a great source of pride to the Barbadosborn man who came to Stevenage as a teenager but went on to win county titles for and all-conquering Middlesex side led by Mike Brearley.
His Test debut on March 13, 1981, was both an inspiring moment for youngsters up and down the country as well as an emotional return to his homeland where his love for the game was established. He grew up in a female-dominated household, among Butcher’s first experience of cricket came aged 12 when his cousin Monica took him to watch Australia take on the West Indies in the Aussies’ 1964-95 tour. He watched Bill Lawry and Bob Simpson become the first opening pair to score double centuries in the same. “I would play morning, noon and night with my peers, the bigger boys,” he told The Cricketer. “The household was all women, my grandmother, aunts, etc. They liked cricket, but in terms of knowing much about it not so much. His grandmother eventually submitted to his desire for greater freedom. His
parents had fled to England as part of the Windrush generation during the 1950s and were keen that he and sister Margaret joined them. Come 1967, they made the move across the Atlantic.
“I arrived in England and it was a strange place,” he said. “In Barbados the sun shines 365 days of the year, it is warm and it is very much an outdoor life. I arrive in England and it is, even though it is May, absolutely freezing and that was a culture shock.
“I had no friends at all and there was only me and my sister. My family in England there were another four children. We didn’t know each other apart from pictures.
“I didn’t play any football in Barbados but as I started to make friends in the area I very quickly gravitated to their passion and fell in love with that too. It was through that that I got back into cricket, through football. “
He was kicking about with his mates at a Stevenage park when the town cricket team set up for a third XI match and were a player short. He dashed home, got some whites and that was the start of his rise to stardom.
He had 16 years with Middlesex joining at the age of 20 ahead of the 1974 season and a career that would see him earn
three England test caps and play in three ODI games in 1980/81. He made 251 firstclass appearances for Middlesex, scoring 10,935 runs at an average of 31.69
Roland has since moved back to Barbados, where he has been involved in cicket and football. An Arsenal fan, he got into coaching and worked for Brendan Rogers at Reading. He also ran soccer schools for the Gunners and has written coaching manuals. This summer he has been in the UK for some commentary work up and down the country as well as running some diversity and inclusion seminars – and speaking out loudly on black sportspeoples’ issues. He was very vocal about the racism scandal at Yorkshire. “Talk is cheap and promises are a comfort to a fool. I want to see action,” he said. “They’ve got a lot of
work to do, a lot of people are very much on their case because a lot of people feel that they really have had their head in the sand but they’ve got a great opportunity now to put things right.
“They can really set the tone for the future and not just send a message for cricket but lead some of the other sports who at this moment in time will be struggling with their own problems with diversity. “You’re going to have persons from all walks of background involved in sport. If you can get a level playing field for everyone then everybody can benefit from that.” You can read Roland’s story in Town’s Got Talent, on sale in the club shop and at the Museum. The book highlights the many sports stars associated with Stevenage.

HISTORY
ON THIS DAY: 08 OCTOBER
It’s a topsy-turvy date in history for the Boro’; the results on 8 October over the years throwing up a real mixed bag of fortunes. Even on home turf, we’ve had all outcomes in matches we’ve played on this date. And that leaves us with an overall tally of three wins and four losses from nine. For the mathemagicians among you, that gives us two draws too.
Two of those wins have come in some of our more recent outings on this date – and in the Football League Trophy. A Ja-son Cowley strike earned us victory at Wycombe Wanderers in 2019, while Francois Zoko and Filipe Morais bagged the goals that saw off MK Dons at the Lamex. But what about the bread and butter of the league?
Sonny Bradley wanted all the action for himself on 8 October 2016. After putting Plymouth Argyle at the Lamex, he’d then score our equaliser – before grabbing the Pilgrims’ winner. To date, it was our fourth league outing on this date; none of which have yet delivered three points. There’s a first time for everything, though, and hopefully that’s today.
IT’S SWINDON TOWN AGAIN…
Painful lows and soaring highs – with bits and pieces in-between. our home record against Swindon Town has many sto-ries to tell. It goes without saying that our iconic FA Cup win in 1998 is where things all started with us and them. But it was October 2012 when Paolo Di Canio brought the Robins to our place for the first time.
1983 Stevenage Borough 4-1
Waterlows , FA Vase Preliminary Round (Metcalfe 2, Lear, Gittings)
1988 Tilbury 1-0 Stevenage Borough, FA Vase Preliminary Round
2001 Stevenage Borough 1-1 Telford United , Nationwide Conference (Wormull)
2002 Doncaster Rovers 0-0
Stevenage Borough, Nationwide Conference
2005 Burton Albion 3-1 Stevenage Borough, Nationwide Conference (Elding)
2011 Huddersfield Town 2-1
Stevenage, npower League One (Laird)
2013 Stevenage 2-1 MK Dons ,
Johnstone’s Paint Trophy R2 (Zoko, Morais)
2016 Stevenage 1-2 Plymouth Argyle, Sky Bet League Two (Bradley OG)
2019 Wycombe Wanderers 0-1 Stevenage, leasing.com Trophy Southern Group G (Cowley)
Honestly, we wish he hadn’t. Boro’ were comfortably beaten on that occasion –losing 4-0. Of course, this meant we could only get better and January 2014 saw us win by two goals – a rare treat in a season that saw us relegated from League One. Since then, we’ve had two more home wins and one more defeat – plus last season’s 1-1 draw.
Away from home? Nothing much to report since 1998 on that front yet…
MAGIC MOMENT: FA Cup R2 – 02 December 2017
Boro’s biggest win against the Robins came as Christmas loomed over the horizon in 2017. After smashing Nantwich Town by five goals in Round One, we repeated the trick in Round Two – albeit conceding two goals to the Robins.
Alex Samuel set us on our way with a neat finish on 18 minutes, before Matt Godden doubled the advantage a mere five minutes later. But Boro’ didn’t have it all our own way and it actually looked as if we’d go into the break on level terms after the Robins scored twice. Thankfully, a stoppage time goal from Tom Pett restored our advantage. After the break, there was no way back for the Robins – even though Luke Norris came very close to another leveller for them! Danny Newton came off the bench to score twice; first in the 72nd minute and again five minutes later. By clinching an emphatic victory, we marched onto Round Three… only to limp out after a replay against Reading.
ON BOTH SIDES…
The player links between Boro’ and the Robins go all the way back to our very beginnings. Paul Peterson is one of the men who gave the newly-formed Stevenage Borough the foundations on which to thrive in senior football at the start of the 1980s. Swindon Town, however, would be his first port of call after leaving Leeds United in 1971. Bringing things right up to date, meanwhile, we have our own Luke Norris. Before he joined Colchester United in June 2018, Nozza was on the books at the County Ground. In fact, the Robins had activated a clause to extend his deal with the club prior to his move to Essex. In a two-year spell with Swindon, Nozza scored 20 times in 84 appearances.
Let’s not forget current midfield maestro Jake Reeves – signing for Swindon on a short-term deal in 2014. Other notable players to play for both sides include Giuliano Grazioli, Steve Berry, Scott Cuthbert, and Dean Hooper.
By Pete Hayman courtesy of boroguide.co.ukGood afternoon Boro fans and welcome to The Lamex Stadium for this weekends fixture with Swindon Town. Our current home form, and form in general, has been outstanding so a huge congratulations to the manager and his team for what has been an excellent start to the season.
The Elite Development Programme at Stevenage FC has taken some big strides in the last several months and no bigger than our recent move to the Hertfordshire FA County Ground which will now host our education, training and match days for the student athletes who are with us on the EDP. For those who are not so aware of our role within the club, we provide further educational and footballing pathways for 16-19 year olds with the opportunity to study both a Level 2 and Level 3 BTEC in Sports Development and Coaching. One of the biggest assets we have currently on the EDP, alongside some
of the excellent student athletes, are our members of staff. Chris Winton has been doing an outstanding job in tutoring our students to gain vital qualifications for their next steps within the sports industry. Josh ColdicottStevens is a young aspiring coach who has supported the programme and our players beyond his remit of work and is a credit upon to himself for what he has done so far. We would also like to welcome some new faces to the programme, but not to the club. Academy U13s coach Chris Barrell and Head of Academy Goalkeeping Louis Hrebeniak have now come onboard to support our ever growing site. With wins so far against Brentford, Southend and Watford, we aim to continue our good run of form next week in the National Cup and hopefully we can match that of the first team. Make some noise and enjoy the game, COME ON YOU BORO!

Subs not used: White, Schofield
Goals: Makewell x 2
A brace from Amy Makewell was not enough to steer Stevenage FCW into the next round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup as Boro’ failed to repeat the heroics of the previous week in Essex.
Bowers & Pitsea came out of the blocks quickest and tested Celine Ray in the Stevenage goal early on, producing a fabulous save from the young goalkeeper. Boro’ grew into the game and Makewell could have had her name on the score sheet earlier had she connected properly at the far post.
The misses proved costly as Anna Re argued that she had got the ball, but a free kick was awarded on the Bowers left hand side. From 25 yards, Captain Danielle Sillitoe fired the shot high and over Ray to open the scoring. Just seven minutes later, Ray saw the ball soar over her head again, this time from a sublime shot from distance. With the ball surrendered in the midfield, Mollie DeBell connected well with the loose ball and left Ray with no chance from a well taken and unexpected shot.
The only yellow card of the game was issued to Mollie Debell for a late challenge in what was a feisty contest. However, Stevenage reduced the
arrears in injury time. Becky Shephard shot from distance and Margot Farnes could not hold the ball. It fell invitingly for Makewell to hammer the ball home and set up an interesting second half. Amy Gooderham saw her early effort saved down low but Bowers had a further obstacle for Stevenage to climb. A corner came in from the Boro’ left and was headed into the net by Maddie Thomas. Despite calls for a tug of the shirt, the goal stood and Stevenage had to go again. It took five minutes to respond as Makewell cut inside from the left only to lose the ball. She worked hard to win it back and in so doing, was well placed to fire a shot from the edge of the box that Farnes could not keep out of the net.
Moments later, Stevenage reintroduced Captain Lucy Webster to the team, who added a new impetus. Stevenage battled hard with a shot cleared off the line and a late chance for Gooderham headed wide, but despite an additional eight minutes Bowers held on and sent Boro’ out of the cup at the earliest opportunity.

FORM GUIDE
Swindon come to Boro this afternoon on the fringes of the play-off zone and eight points behind the second placed hosts. After seasons of promotion, relegation and then play-off disappointment last term, Swindon will surely be in the mix again, although they began their campaign in badly.
Indeed after starting with an opening day 3-0 thumping at Harrogate, Town took six attempts in all competitions before they got their first win. This run included two defeats and three draws, including a 2-0 EFL Cup exit at Walsall.
While they have also suffered two reverses in the EFL Trophy, their league form has picked up and since their first win at home to Rochdale they have won four in seven. Away form is also fair, since their opening day defeat they have been unbeaten on the road with two wins and four draws in six.
LAST 5 SEASONS
MEET THE BOSS:
Scott Lindsey returned to The County Ground in August 2021 as Assistant Manager.
Lindsey first joined Town in 2014 as U18s Manager following spells with Lincoln City and Tamworth, before joining former Town Boss Mark Cooper at Forest Green Rovers as his Assistant Manager.
Lindsey was part of the Rovers team that clinched promotion to the Football League, but returned to Wiltshire in order to join Ben Garner’s backroom staff.
In June 2022, Scott was appointed First-Team Head Coach, taking over from Ben Garner who departed for Charlton Athletic.
ONE TO WATCH:
Welsh born Luke Jephcott has shown an appetite for goals in his short career so far, indeed he grabbed the vital clincher at home to Newport on Tuesday evening. The 22-year-old first signed for Plymouth in 2014 and made his senior debut four years later on his way to 106 appearances, scoring 33 times in the process. After a spell on loan with Truro he joined Swindon on similar terms at the start of last month. He has also played internationally for the Wales U-19 and U-21 teams making a total of 19 appearances for both.

LATEST NEWS
WELCOME
A warm welcome to the players, directors, staff and especially the supporters of Swindon Town to Stevenage this afternoon. A special welcome to Chris Kyle and the committee of the Swindon Town FC Official Supporters Club, some of whom will be sharing a pre-match pint (or two) with our own SA committee in the Broadhall Suite.
FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION
The official ‘up-to-date’ UK Gov statistics for football-related arrests and banning orders were released on September 22th. They are the most analytical since they were originally conceived. Affording a cursory glance through one of the many statistics contained therein, it was interesting to note that a compilation of the seasons 2014/15 through to July 2022 has the figure for Stevenage totalling 13. This might be compared to the likes of Forest Green Rovers on just 1, whilst Grimsby attained 218. Details of the data can be found here It was shocking to note that the most reported types of incidents were related to pyrotechnics, and the SA implores anyone who sees someone with a flare to report it immediately to the nearest steward.
ENERGY CRISIS
At the time of writing, the SA have become aware of a proposal that between the months of November 2022 and March 2023, all EFL games played on a Saturday should be brought forward from a 3:00pm kick off, to a 1:00pm kick off in an effort to save energy and power.
Bradford City AFC have already commenced a consultation initiative with all their supporters. I too, am anxious to see what Stevenage fans might think of this proposal. Is it a
good idea, or is it a change too far? Let me know. Email me at Lloyd@SFCSA. co.uk
SA AGM
The SA would wish to register its thanks to both Chris Ross and Stuart Dinsey for their support at the SA’s AGM om Tuesday September 28th. Attendant members were treated to a greater understanding and insight as to what is happening ‘behind the scenes’ at the club, its ambitions and aspirations. A very interesting and enjoyable evening was had by all.
KENTISH MAN OR MAN OF KENT
Either way, we’re off to Gillingham on Saturday October 15th. The SA bus costs a very reasonable £20 for members and departs The Lamex at 11.30am. You can get more details and book on line here. Come one, come all as Priestfield beckons. (p.s. Gillingham is on the east bank of the River Medway, so, they are “Men of Kent”).
50/50 TICKETS
We’ve experienced a fantastic response to the rejuvinated 50-50 initiatve after the long interruption due to Covid. Jackie Berners has returned, normality has been restored and takings are rapidly approaching pre-covid figures. Thnak you to everyone who purchases a ticket on match days, it’s so important to our finances.
We still need ticket sellers though on match days. If you want to help, then please contact Jackie Berners via any one of the ticket sellers on match day. Alternatively, contact the SA here: contact@sfcsa.co.uk

‘LOVE FOOTBALL. PROTECT THE GAME’
A message about anti-social and criminal behaviour
To mark the new season, we want to make you aware of new measures being taken across all of football to ensure everyone can have a safe and enjoyable experience. We are supporting strong action from the FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle anti-social and criminal behaviours that put all of us at risk.
This reflects the seriousness of the risks to fans and staff – pyros can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius and cause lifechanging injuries, while entering the pitch endangers players, managers and match officials.
We know those who commit these illegal acts do not represent the majority of supporters.
WHO ENTERS THE PITCH WITHOUT PERMISSION AND THOSE CARRYING OR USING SMOKE BOMBS OR PYROS WILL NOW RECEIVE AN AUTOMATIC CLUB BAN.
