ood afternoon and welcome to the players and officials of Swindon Town. Our season has started okay but we are in an improving and learning phase, so the last few games have not produced the results we would have liked. We were unlucky not to have seen off Wycombe in 90 minutes with a spectacular performance, so to lose on penalties after being by far the better team was a blow. We then put in a subpar performance at Walsall, and it is this inconsistency that we have to remove from our game. A league is won over 46 games, and you cannot afford to be outstanding then poor in the space of two games. However, our squad is hand-picked. Every single lad has a part to play, and we are delighted with the blend of youth and experience we have put together. Adding Bruno Andrade and Max Melbourne late in this window has strengthened us even more, whilst
www.stevenagefc.com
now having players back from injury or sickness has also been a plus for us this week. So, we are ready to go! Some of the football played this season has been simply outstanding and worth every penny of the entrance fee. That is what we want to give you - we want you on the edge of your seat. We want you coming back for more. We may not win every game, but we are determined to play fast, and relentlessly push for a top three place. It is great to have you back. The new North Stand, when filled, makes the stadium look and feel so much better than it has ever done before. So, make your noise and let’s see what we can achieve together! Enjoy the game!

MARTIN GITTINGS Taking place at The Lamex Stadium, a Benefit Match in aid of Martin Gittings has been announced for Sunday 5th September with a 2pm kick-off. Gittings scored a record 217 goals for Stevenage Borough between his debut in 1981 and his final game in November 1994. The potent goal scorer also played for the likes of Hitchin Town, Hendon and Barnet during his playing career, with the latter agreed as suitable opponents for a benefit fixture given the two sides’ competitive history. Sadly, earlier this year, Martin was diagnosed with the incurable and irremediable condition of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA). The condition is closely associated with Parkinson’s disease but with rapid deterioration of nerve cells in the brain. Martin currently receives 24-hour care at home, and any money raised from the benefit match will be split between specialist care and an MSA charity. BORO
HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 04 SEPTEMBER Out of August and into September, this is the time when seasons really start to bed in. Early gains are to be built on, while poor starts need putting right. And, sometimes, the direction of a campaign can turn on a sixpence. That was most definitely the case on 4 September 1999. After Dickie Hill’s Boro’ had marched to six wins from six in August, a home match against Kidderminster Harriers scared no-one. But the bubble burst; Michael Love sent off as we lost 2-0. With the 100% record shattered, we only managed to win two league games in the next two months. No other Boro’ results on this date saw such a seismic shift in the direction of our season. But that Kiddy defeat isn’t the only time we’ve finished one man light on this date. It didn’t hold us back in 2007 when we cruised to victory on the road at Droylsden (Stuart Lewis sent off). But a 10-man Boro’ side had to settle for a point three years later when Crewe Alexandra came to town in League Two (Stacy Long sent off). Meanwhile, it was on this date in 1990 that Paul Fairclough returned to Hertford Town for the first time since taking charge of Boro’. If there were any fireworks expected, they never materialised; the two teams playing out a goalless draw at Hertingfordbury Park. And to think we went on to score 122 league goals that season too…

Stevenage FC v Swindon Town
YOU AGAIN? SWINDON TOWN You can’t think of our next opponents without evoking memories of our iconic FA Cup win at the County Ground in 1998. It remains etched into Boro’ folklore – the howling wind, torrential rain, and (of course) the Giuliano Grazioli winner. If only more of our meetings with Swindon Town were as memorable, right? Sadly, that isn’t the case. In fact, there are some encounters we’d much rather forget. In our 13 previous games against the Robins, we’ve registered just four victories. The other nine have gone in their favour. And some of those have been quite humiliating. That includes our first-ever meeting as equals back in 2012; Paolo Di Canio’s side routing us 4-0 in what was our heaviest Football League defeat to that point. To double down, Boro’ lost 3-0 in the return fixture at the County Ground that season as Dani Lopez saw red. It hasn’t all been bad, of course. Strangely, we chose our 2013-4 relegation campaign to buck that losing trend; our two-goal
www.stevenagefc.com
win on 14 January 2014 a rare highlight that season. And it seems we can always rely on the FA Cup to get our way against the Robins. Nearly exactly 20 years after that memorable day at the County Ground, Boro’ smashed five past the Robins at the Lamex in Round Two. To end this less-than-uplifting recap, you might remember that our last You Again? – against Wycombe Wanderers – included memories of when goalkeeper Jesse Joronen scored from his own half. In a weird twist, it’s also happened to our next opponents. Ilias Chair capped a 2-0 home win on 12 March 2019 with a speculative strike from inside his own half. If it takes something that spectacular for us to beat the Robins, you can see why our record isn’t so great!

ood afternoon to everyone ahead of today’s fixture versus Swindon. Since our last league game at the Lamex, we have welcomed back our U9-14 schoolboy players to the Academy from a well-deserved five-week break over the school holidays. Whilst the players will be champing at the bit to return to a full-throttle games programme, providing the boys (and of course their equally committed parents!) with some time off and a chance to just be kids, is important to us and something that we find increases their hunger to learn, develop and play football. With the beginning of a season comes the seemingly inevitable changing of the guard when it comes to staffing, with two of our pathway coaches, Steve and Jesse, progressing to become age group leads and Chris joining us from a Premier League talent ID programme. I’d like to personally welcome them on behalf of the football club and we look forward to supporting them through their development as educators for the betterment of our young athletes. The relationship between Academy and 1st Team is continually becoming closer, not only in terms of graduates and apprentices having opportunities on the bench of late, but even more so with regards to our philosophy and style of play. The playing identity of the football club should at this stage be evident to you as the fan, and we as an Academy
20
have adopted the formation and use of language to ensure that any player who is called upon by the gaffer, at any moment, can slip seamlessly into the group without needing extensive re-education upon arrival. Just last weekend, we won at both U16’s and U18’s away to Northampton, snapping what the players themselves call ‘the Moulton College’ curse. We dominated possession and left opposition staff perplexed at how to cope with not only our movement but equally important, our intensity. The 1st team staff have had an open-door policy for our coaching team, encouraging us to attend sessions, meetings and games in order to ensure synergy between us, whilst they themselves have been in attendance at numerous Academy fixtures since the start of the season. Long may this relationship continue to strengthen and bear fruit. The coming months will see our Academy coaches work tirelessly with the young players to progress them on their journey and we will be there along the way to support with observations, cocoaching, CPD and external education opportunities. I look forward to updating everyone, not only on the fantastic work our young players are producing, but how our coaching team themselves are leaving no stone unturned in developing the next generation of stars to grace the Lamex Stadium. Enjoy the game, come on Boro! IEUAN LEWIS – Academy Head of Coaching

WOMEN Lucy Webster Defender
Lucy, congratulations on your appointment as Stevenage FCW captain this season; what does it mean to you to be captain? It’s massive for me and definitely the biggest achievement in my football career so far. Being a big fan of the club, it’s just nice to know that the manager trusts you to take the club where it needs to be. How would you summarise yourself as a leader? I think I have a good balance between being a friend and being serious about taking the club where it needs to go. It’s good to have that balance so the girls can come to me for either football or social life. Being a Stevenage fan, what does the club mean to you? A lot! I mean it’s something that me and my Dad have been coming to since I was a kid. My first memory of football was going to a Stevenage game. It’s just massive – the club is everything to me at the moment. What are your expectations for the season as captain? Definitely get the club where it deserves to be in the league; I don’t want us to be a team that’s fighting relegation. I want to take this club right to the other end of the table.
www.stevenagefc.com
It’s been a difficult start to the season with three defeats from three; how would you assess things so far? It’s been tough I think for everyone at the club; management and players. It’s just been a tough start but I think it’s going to show a lot about us as players and management to show that we can actually get back on track and kick-start our season properly. What do you feel needs to change to ensure a turnaround in results? I think looking at Sunday’s game that was a good turnaround. Although we lost, it was a good step forward with the change in formation and how we played was much better. As captain, what responsibilities do you feel are required to get that first win? I think it’s important to just keep the girls motivated and keep them happy with a positive mind-set so we can get the win and push ourselves up the league. Away from football the girls have been doing some team bonding activities – how would you assess team morale at the moment? I think it’s good despite the results and maybe for outsiders looking in will probably think it’s not great at training but I think we’ve just kept positive, wanted to improve, we’re happy, we’re enjoying each other’s company and I just think it’s better than it seems on the pitch.

GIRLS DEVELOPMENT CENTRE 2021/22 Back in July, the Foundation held trials for our 2021/22 Girls Development Centre and shortly after sent offers to successful girls in our u10’s, u12’s, u14’s & u16’s age groups as well as girls who trialled specifically for our GK session. Over 90 girls registered to trial and the new crop of around 70 GDC players will be starting their season on Monday 6th September. Players will take part in weekly development centre sessions based at Shephalbury Sports Academy and have the opportunity to represent Stevenage FC in fixtures during the school holidays. The centre is a supplementary training and games programme and allows all girls to still compete for their grassroots clubs. All of the new Girls Development Centre players will be invited to our upcoming home fixture vs Forest Green and we’re really excited to be welcoming them into the Women and Girls pathway. Last season saw development centre graduate, Poppy Fletcher become the first GDC graduate to sign for the women’s team which was a great

success for the centre as a whole and hopefully provides girls in the centre with an ambition to follow in Poppy’s footsteps. During the off season, we saw two players leave our Development centre after being accepted into Spurs’ pathway and we are extremely proud of both of these players. Congratulations to Anaise and Lily on their moves to Spurs and we wish you all the best. THE BOSS Ben Garner was appointed head coach of Swindon on July 21 this year and he has made an impressive start so far with a 50% win ratio. The 41-year-old has been widely tipped to make an impact on the managerial side of the game with an early career which has seen him work with the Crystal Palace first team and as assistant head coach at West Brom. In 2019 he was appointed to manage Bristol Rovers but after 19 defeats and just 6 wins in 33 games he was relieved of his role.

This afternoon we welcome Swindon back to The Lamex. My abiding memory of Swindon was on January 3rd 1998. It wasn’t so much that we won 1-2 in the FA Cup tie at the County Ground, but the incredible storm of biblical proportions which ensued, and the ribald banter emanating from the Stevenage faithful in a terraced stand with no roof! Such things memories are made of.
Welcome to Denise and Steve Rawlings, who have occupied the same seats in the Lamex now for over 10 years. Moving to Stevenage in 1987, Denise (who hails from Darwen) and Steve (a son of Doynton, near Bristol) commenced their love affair with the Boro after taking their son Richard when he was just 4 years old. Steve taught Mathematics at the Hitchin Boys School for over 25 years, whilst Denise specialised in teacher-training, rising to become Associate Dean at the University of Hertfordshire. Following Stevenage both home and away, one of their objectives is to visit every away stadium that Stevenage have played at - and they’re well on their way to achieving it too (but we shan’t mention Accrington or Grimsby. Proud grandparents to Joe, be sure to say “Hi” to Steve & Denise next time you happen by them in the Main Stand.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
