HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 16 JANUARY Last time out, we mentioned how January often ends up being a hectic time in the footballing calendar. Like last week (09 January), however, the 16th is another date that hasn’t been the busiest for us over the years. It seems this pattern of weeks is the exception to the norm. That, or the deluge of new year fixtures is a bit of a myth. Either way, this is the sixth time in 41 campaigns that we’ve played on this date. And it’s a mix of league and cup exploits to reflect upon too. The last time we stepped out on 16 January was three years ago; a midweek jaunt to the Madjeski Stadium in our FA Cup Round Three replay against Reading. The Royals were struggling in the Championship at the time. But they didn’t pass up the opportunity here; emerging with a 3-0 win thanks to a Jon Dadi Bodvarsson hattrick. Two years before that, we were at Home Park for a League Two clash with Plymouth Argyle. A fast-paced first part of the match saw us trade goals, with the Pilgrims leading 2-1 after 17 minutes. The hosts added a third goal just before the break and, while Charlie Lee doubled up for the afternoon just after the break, the three points were theirs. To be honest, our record on 16 January isn’t fantastic. We’ve come out on top just once; a 3-1 FA Trophy Round Three win against Dover Athletic in 1999. Chris Pearson got two that day, with Carl Alford (who else?) with the other. But it’s also worth maybe noting that it’s the only time – until now – that we’ve been at home on this day in history. Omen? Our 1993 trip to Yeading wasn’t entirely fruitless either. Paul Bowgett and Noel Blackwell got the goals as we claimed a

14

share of the spoils. Whatever happens today, however, let’s hope it’s not a repeat of 1988. Not only did we lose 1-0 at Wembley, but it marked the start of a dire run of form. That defeat to the Lions was the first of seven on the spin – scoring just once on the way. For those who remember, we went on to be relegated at the end of that campaign! 1988 Wembley 1-0 Stevenage Borough, Vauxhall Opel League Division One 1993 Yeading 2-2 Stevenage Borough, Diadora League Premier Division 1999 Stevenage Borough 3-1 Dover Athletic, FA Trophy Round Three 2016 Plymouth Argyle 3-2 Stevenage, Sky Bet League Two 2018 Reading 3-0 Stevenage, FA Cup Round Three (replay)

Stevenage FC v Tranmere Rovers

YOU AGAIN?: TRANMERE ROVERS Looking back at our overall record against this weekend’s guests, it leaves a bit to be desired. In 10 past meetings, we have just two victories to our name; the most recent of which was the 3-1 win in early March 2014 that turned out to be our last in League One until our relegation had been confirmed. Before that, you’ll have to go back to the firstever meeting between our two clubs for the second – or should that be first – of our victories against Tranmere. Of course, our head-to-head record sounds bad when you put it like that.

www.stevenagefc.com

But is it actually worth feeling down about? Not really. The Rovers come into our latest encounter with three wins – one more than us. And we can chalk that one down to last season’s 2-0 defeat at Prenton Park. We didn’t get the chance to balance things out at the Lamex as the return fixture never happened. And based on how things have been so far, we could’ve expected at least a point. Neither of us have (yet) recorded an away win at the other’s expense yet. In fact, the last two encounters between us at the Lamex have ended 2-2. Both came either side of Rovers’ recent time in the National League. The first – in 2015 – was the last point our visitors earned before suffering a second straight relegation. The second – in 2018 – was their first match back in the Football League and saw them come back from two goals down against our 10 men. So, Boro’ have an unbeaten home record to protect and a head-to-head win count to even out here today. Let’s do it.

WOMEN POSITION: Left back/centre back

HOW DID YOU GET INTO FOOTBALL? Our family friends have the biggest love for football and Chelsea. They were so passionate about it, it made it impossible to not show an interest in it.

WHO INSPIRED YOU TO PLAY FOOTBALL? My brother, Elkanah. It started as proving to him I could do what he could do (classic sibling rivalry). He’s the reason I push myself and I owe him everything.

WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE FEMALE FOOTBALLER AND WHY? Danielle Carter, other than being an intelligent player on the pitch, the reason for her being my favourite is because of her strength throughout her injuries and perseverance.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOTBALL MOMENT AS A PLAYER? Whilst playing for Wales vs Iceland (u-19s), we were 2-0 down and I scored from the kick off. It was impossible and that’s what gave us another push, doing the impossible.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE YOUNG GIRLS STARTING OUT THEIR FOOTBALL JOURNEY?

FOLLOW THE WOMEN:

www.stevenagefc.com

My mum always told me three things before I got out the car to train or play in a match – “kick butt, play like a lion and aim for the netted area”. But most of all, she wanted me to enjoy myself, love what you do and you never work a day in your life.

WELCOME CLUB MATTERS It’s a happy anniversary to our visitors today as 2021 marks 100 years since they first joined the Football League set-up. Their history however goes back much further than that and started with another sport. Officially founded in 1884, they were named Belmont Football Club after two local cricket clubs joined forces to create a footballing arm. A year later the name was

changed to Tranmere Rovers, named after a then village in Birkenhead. In 1887 they moved ground to a site which had been purchased from a rugby club and in 1895 renamed it as Prenton Park, the club that we know today was really taking shape. After an early life in the Lancashire nonleague set-up, Tranmere were invited to join the newly formed Third Division North in 1921. In 1924 they saw the most famous player in their history take the field, a 16-year-old local lad called Dixie Dean who moved on to Everton for an eye-watering ÂŁ3,000. With the exception of one season in the second tier, Rovers spent all their time in

either Division Three North or the fourth tier until the late 1980s. In 1988 they made their first appearance at Wembley in the Football League Centenary Tournament while a year later promotion to the third tier was the base for greater success. In 1990 Tranmere lost 2-0 in the play-off final to Notts County but a week later were back at Wembley to claim the Leyland Daf Trophy with a 2-1 win over Bristol Rovers. Tranmere spent a remarkable 11 straight seasons in the second tier until severe financial issues saw a gradual slide down the leagues. Despite this their exit was swift, from a 21st place finish in the third tier in 2014 to a last place spot and banishment to non-league just a year later. Rovers were back in the league after three years absence and after instant promotion on their return in season 2018-19, they now find themselves back with Boro after their relegation last year on the points per game method.

THE BOSS Keith Hill was appointed first-team manager of Tranmere Rovers in November 2020.

Hill is best-known for his two spells at the helm of League One side Rochdale. First appointed in 2006, Hill remained in charge for a period of four-and-a-half years and achieved promotion to League One during his penultimate season at the club. The 51-year-old departed the Dale for Championship side Barnsley in 2011, where he helped the Tykes avoid relegation from the second tier before returning to Rochdale in January 2013. In his first full season back at the club in 2013/14, Hill guided Rochdale to promotion from League Two for the second time in his career by securing a third-placed finish with 81 points. Hill’s association with Rochdale came to an end in March 2019, with his next opportunity arising at Bolton Wanderers five months later. As a player, Hill featured as a central defender for the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Morecambe and Plymouth Argyle during his 16-year professional career but the majority of his time was spent at Rochdale.

WATCH OUT FOR

James Vaughan - Forward James Vaughan re-joined Rovers on a permanent deal in August 2020, following a successful loan in the 2019/20 season. Vaughan started his career at Everton after coming through the Toffees’ youth system to become the Premier League’s youngest goal scorer against Crystal Palace in April 2005, aged 16-years and 271 days. After 60 first-team appearances at Everton, Vaughan moved to Norwich City in 2011. Further stints at Huddersfield Town and hometown club Birmingham City followed for Vaughan before Bury was his next side in 2016. The 32-year-old secured later success, winning the third tier with Wigan Athletic in May 2018 prior to an EFL Trophy triumph in Portsmouth colours in March 2019. A move to Bradford followed in the summer of 2019, where he plundered 11 goals in 25 appearances for the Yorkshire outfit as captain.

COMMERCIAL As with every Club in the land, we’ve been starved of a vital income stream, after all, who wants to sponsor a match they can’t attend, hire an executive box they can’t access or sponsor a match ball that nobody will see? But we are ready for business. As soon as we’re allowed to reopen we will be there for you. Hopefully this current set of restrictions will have the desired effect and infection numbers will fall significantly

enough for us to be allowed to restart, most likely with a limited service similar to what was offered for the recent game against Grimsby Town with around 100 people being admitted to the North Stand, before a more general opening of the stadium as time goes on. LATEST NEWS

TRANMERE ROVERS Every time we play Tranmere, I can’t help but be reminded of actor Ricky Tomlinson playing Mike Bassett as the new manager of Wirral County FC in the hit comedy television series back in 2005. The scene of the team running out with the new shirt sponsor “Wirral Rubbish” emblazoned across their chests followed by their mascot “Wheelie Bin” still has me in stitches to this day. Brentford’s Griffin Park stadium doubled as the home ground of Wirral County and I know that a number of Tranmere fans were involved in the making. So, a big Boro welcome to Tranmere, their players and officials this afternoon.

STEVENAGE FOOTBALL ARTIFACTS An old schoolfriend of mine, Colin Armitage, donated this item to the archive. Colin’s dad (Cyril) was key to the success of the Stevenage Town Supporters’ Club back in the 1940’s.

As Social Secretary, Cyril used to organise dances and other functions as fundraising initiatives for the club. His predilection was “Master of Ceremonies” – or ‘MC’ at such events. On October 15th, 1949, Cyril married Enid Wilderspin at the St Nicholas church. During their reception held at the CIU Club in the High Street, Supporters’ Club chairman, Vic Folbigg, presented the pair with a Westminster chiming clock. The accompanying photograph depicts the clock along with an inscription plaque. Some of you may remember Cyril and Enid who went on to become ‘mine hosts’ at the Rising Sun pub in Julians Road. MY CITY, MY SHIRT Anwar Uddin is the Diversity manager for the Football Supporters Association (FSA) and Kick It Out. An initiative Anwar is currently promoting is an idea by Cardiff City fan, Yusuf Ismail, of holding a portrait photographic exhibition of individuals, representative of every creed, colour, faith and background of their local community – each one wearing their home club shirt. To quote Yusuf, the intention is “to normalise the idea of people of colour wearing their club shirt, as well as highlighting the diversity among the club’s fanbase and championing the multicultural nature of where you live”. If you would like to know more about the ‘My City, My Shirt’ project, then you’re welcome to email Anwar here: anwar.uddin@thefsa.org.uk. LLOYD BRISCOE SA Chairman
