THE CHAIRMAN
G
PHIL WALLACE
ood afternoon and welcome to the players and officials of Tranmere Rovers. I don’t feel I can start this column without first mentioning the sad news we received of the passing of Club legend Martin Gittings at the age of 61 after a long illness. It’s not often the term legend can be used without anyone debating that description, but it absolutely applies to Martin. His goalscoring feats happened before I came to the Club, but I used to watch from afar as he made his mark on non-league football. His goals were seemingly nonstop and when you are that influential that you have a fanzine named after you, that probably says it all. He was an incredible talent and a great guy. Boro was in his heart, and he will be sadly missed by everyone here. A real loss to us all and our hearts go out to his family. They will be so sad at his passing, but they can also be incredibly proud of his achievements as a player and know that he will always be with us here at Boro. The tribute today will be sad but uplifting for one of the great guys in life. Moving back to the pitch, we were so disappointed not to take all three points last Saturday after back-to-back wins against Colchester and Rochdale. I have rarely seen so many attempts on goal, but as frustrating as it was, the lads know they could and should have put another two points on the board, so today is a chance to make up for that. This should be a belter of a game. Tranmere are in the last play-off spot, and they will want a win to stay there. In turn, we have a chance to really put some pressure on Oldham and Barrow with a home win, as the three of us fight to avoid the last relegation spot. It is not at all where I want to be - or where I thought we would be when we

started the season so well, but I can’t say it is not exciting and demanding! In the same way that winning produces that great feeling and losing points leaves you flat, at this stage of the season and bearing in mind what’s at stake, those feelings are multiplied by about ten. It is the same for the players and management. This group want to deliver a win so badly for all of us and they have more chance of that if you can get behind them on Saturday, with as much noise as you can make! We have got four games to win the six points that makes us mathematically safe. Today is a great day to start! Enjoy the game.

n the end statistics and numbers can only tell part of a story. From the day he first played for Boro in July 1981 to his final game in 1994, Martin Gittings had 217 goals to his name. These were scored in four spells at the club and the games ranged from the United Counties League Division One through to the Conference. MATCHDAY MASCOTS There’s lots of great luck and good support coming for Boro today as we have three mascots for this game against Tranmere. First up we welcome Luke Ellett from Wimpole. Luke, 10, attends Steeple Morden School and lists football, cooking and making sports TikTok videos among his hobbies. His favourite Boro player is Luke Prosser.
Reggie Bradbury is our next mascot. Reggie is eight years of age and lives in Stevenage, attending Camps Hill School. His hobbies are football, Fortnite and history and his favourite Boro player is Jake Taylor. It’s back to the Ellett family we go for our final mascot of the day. A big welcome to 7-year-old Rhys Ellett who also lives in Wimpole and attends Steeple Morden School. Rhys is also a big fan of Football, trampolining and running and his number one Boro player is Luther James-Wildin. Here’s hoping all three have an amazing day with us and take us another step nearer to safety.

BORO
HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 23 APRIL Boro’ still have another couple of weeks until the current season comes to an end – but, over the years, today is a day in which matters have settled and obligations fulfilled. It’s also a rarity to be at home on 23 April too; just three of our 11 past outings on this date in history have been at Broadhall Way. And our travels haven’t usually been fruitful. Now, it tends to be the case that joining the Football League warps our record on a certain date in a negative way. It’s not the case here, however. On 23 April 2016, we made the long trip north to Morecambe – and returned home with an emphatic win as Darren Sarll lifted us further away from the danger zone. And it’s the only time we’ve won on the road on this date. The good news is that our home form on 23 April is strong. Those three games delivered seven league points – Hayes the first to fall in 1994 as we kept ourselves ahead of Enfield in the race for Conference football. Fast forward to 2005 and Leigh RMI were no match for us on the final day of the regular season; our 2-0 win edging us into the playoffs. Morecambe’s name pops up again as it was the Shrimps who lost out with their draw at Tamworth. And, speaking of Morecambe and draws, a 1-1 stalemate at Broadhall Way in 2001 completes our home record on this date… for now. It’s in direct contrast to the results that
18
preceded our Hayes meeting in 1994. Our 2-0 defeat at Dover Athletic in 1987 saw us beaten 3-1 on aggregate in the Knights Floodlit League semi-final. It remains a competition we never managed to win. And we can probably assume that we will never have that chance again? Lastly of note, our 1-0 defeat at Staines Town in 1988. Denny Tyler saw red as Boro’ made it a miserable seventh game without a win – not to mention a sixth straight game without scoring a goal. More significantly, it confirmed that we’d be playing Division Two North football in 1988-9 – a 1-0 win at Basildon a week later proving much too little too late.
YOU AGAIN? TRANMERE ROVERS Ah, Tranmere Rovers – what an unusual relationship we’ve had with them over the years. We first met after promotion to League One in 2011; trading home wins as our momentum drove us into the playoffs at the first attempt. The next season, we both raced out of the traps too – Rovers leading the way, Boro’ following behind at the start of the 2012-3 campaign. Of course, it wasn’t to last. Our form was the first to dip dramatically as winter arrived. Rovers still led the way when we met at the Lamex on 24 November 2012; a late Greg Tansey stunner rescuing a point. There was no such luck on Sunday 24 March 2013 as
Stevenage FC v Tranmere Rovers FC
we were easily beaten 3-1 in front of Sky TV cameras – presumably there on an early season assumption this would be a promotion ding-dong. It was not – Rovers ending up in 11th, us in 18th and under new management. The following season, we collected four points against Rovers – but it wasn’t enough to stop us joining them in being relegated to League Two. Having endured similar fortunes in those two League One campaigns, we decided to do our own thing once back in the fourth tier for the 2014-5 campaign. Admittedly, two 2-2 draws suggest a degree of parity between the sides. But the truth is we were on course to make the playoffs; Rovers, meanwhile, were hurtling towards a second straight relegation. It’d be three years before they managed to escape the clutches of the National League. And they came to us for their first game back in the Football League; sharing the spoils in a 2-2 draw on 4 August 2018. Boro’ lost the return by two goals at Prenton Park in February 2019, with Rovers now on their way straight through League Two and heading up. Tranmere returned to League Two in
www.stevenagefc.com
2020; condemned to relegation based on PPG when the coronavirus brought an early end to proceedings. But we had to wait to be reacquainted; our home fixture in December 2020 postponed due to the aforementioned virus - squeezing both our fixtures into a three-and-a-half-week period in early 2021. A 0-0 draw at home was followed up by a 1-0 win at Prenton Park; Danny Newton taking lessons from Greg Tansey in delivering a stunning winning goal with his first kick after coming on as substitute. Rovers got their revenge in the first of our two meetings this season, however – a game that too was pushed back as Storm Arwen damaged their ground. So, it seems we’ve packed more drama into 13 previous meetings than we’ve done with other clubs who we’ve played a lot more often. The current state of play? Four wins for them, three for us, and six draws in-between.

ACADEMY
G
ood afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Lamex for this crucial fixture in our fight for League 2 survival. This time is no less exciting for the Academy, although certainly less stressful, as we close out our season in style. The Easter break saw our schoolboy players compete in friendly fixtures home and away as well as in a tournament which hosted some of the biggest clubs in the world. There were games during this period against the likes of Man City, PSV, Marseille, Chelsea, West Ham, Spurs, Swansea, Brighton and Wolves, with our young players pitting their wits and skills against opponents in some great locations. Our phase leads continue to stretch, test and support the children under our care, not only with these wide-ranging fixtures, but in the training programme and game formats that provide different variations of our beautiful game and create opportunities to practice that excite and challenge their minds. For example, our FP lead Tom Farr hosted an event we refer to as a ‘conveyor belt’ programme, whereby the players of a certain age group compete against their (in the latest iteration, versus West
Ham) counterparts in 3v3, then at 5v5 and finally at 7v7, on different size pitches with different size footballs. Another example of excellent practice is in the training of our U18s, with Chris Agutter our PDP lead using different shaped practice formats to stimulate thought, increase cognition and improve the learning of his players, all whilst developing their own unique areas of strength and weakness. Jimmy Martin and his coaches have been provoking thought and self-reflection in a unique way OFF the pitch recently, with Tom Malins and his U14’s engaging in a ‘courtroom’ analysis session. We are fortunate in having a mix of experienced and young coaches who have all bought in to our environment, none more so than our long serving Steve Barker, who this week has flown to Texas to embark on a terrific adventure, coaching the young Houston Dynamos and developing their coaches. Steve has been a servant of this football club, as a volunteer, as an analyst and as a coach, he will be missed. Enjoy the game, come on Boro! IEUAN LEWIS Head of Coaching

A warm, sunny spring Easter Sunday set the scene for ‘Boro’s last game of the 2021/22 season against QPR. It has been a tough season for the girls with a switch in management after seven games instantly bringing in stability and confidence throughout the squad. It was a bright start to the game from the hosts as Jodie Bellinger drew a good save from the opposition ‘keeper inside 3 minutes. Bellinger didn’t have long to rue the missed opportunity as 3 minutes later she opened the scoring for the ‘Boro. A trademark driving run from the right flank into the box ended with a vicious shot that flew past the QPR ‘keeper into the roof of the net.
www.stevenagefc.com
Two minutes later the visitors drew level as a half-volley crept past Te’a Oldroyd in the stevenage goal. 1-1 inside the first 10 minutes and it was set to be a very open game. The first half saw Stevenage have several chances with Amy Makewell going close, Holly Greenwood heading over from a corner and Jodie Southby seeing an effort saved. The second half started in much the same manner as the first half with the ‘Boro creating the better chances but unable to find the back of the net. The game grew somewhat untidy with the referee reaching for her pocket on several occasions. In the 57th minute, Jodie Bellinger was taken out by the QPR ‘keeper who was given her marching orders and a penalty was awarded. Up stepped regular penalty taker, Holly Greenwood who calmly dispatched the ball into the net; 2-1 to the ‘Boro! A couple of minutes later, ‘Boro almost added more daylight as Makewell charged down the ‘keeper’s clearance and the ball bounced agonisingly wide when it looked destined to loop into the net. It was heartache at the death as QPR undeservedly equalised through a freekick. Stevenage FCW would like to thank you all for your fantastic support.

And while they sit top of the form table when it comes to home form (with a remarkable 48 points from a possible 66) they are way down in 17th when it comes to away from with a less than impressive 21 points (though of course Boro sit one from bottom with just 14!). In terms of the maths, Boro know that a win today and defeat for Oldham leaves us safe, for Rovers it’s a little more complicated, as they entertain Oldham and then travel to Orient in successive weeks with the automatic spot currently six points and a mountain to climb on goal difference away.
DID YOU KNOW?
•A lthough their date of birth is 1884, that was the year that two cricket clubs Belmont and Lyndhurst Wanderers came together to found a football club. The following year it was renamed Tranmere Rovers. • The nineties were probably the most successful period for Rovers who spent much of the time in the second tier. It culminated with the 1999-2000 season in which they reached the FA Cup sixth round and the final of the League Cup, losing to Leicester 2-1.

ONE TO WATCH Elliot Nevitt made the move to Tranmere Rovers earlier this summer, joining from non-league side Warrington Rylands. The 21-year-old scored a hat-trick at Wembley for Warrington Rylands in May 2021, as he helped the side to win the FA Vase against Binfield. Taking a chance to prove himself in the Football League, Nevitt has made 37 appearances so far scoring eight goals in all competitions.
THE BOSS Returning to the club after a year away, Micky Mellon was appointed manager of Tranmere Rovers in the summer of 2021. After guiding the side to back-toback promotions from the Vanarama National League to Sky Bet League One, Mellon spent last season in charge of Scottish Premiership side Dundee United where he guided them to a 9th place finish in the Scottish top flight. Earlier in his managerial career, the 49-year-old spent time as Fleetwood Town manager from 2008 to 2012, and then manager of Shrewsbury Town from 2014 to 2016.

LATEST NEWS WELCOME Tranmere Rovers are here, and I bid a warm welcome to the members of the Tranmere Rovers Official Supporters Club (TROSC). A special welcome to their chairman, Mark Bartley, and the rest of his board who comprise Gary Lewis, Ian Clare, Mark Moran, Danny Sadler, Steve Davey and Sue Rutter. Hope to meet up with some of Mark’s committee in the Broadhall Suite this afternoon where I will happily stand them a pint.
LAST WEEK’S ARCHIVES QUIZ The “Who” was the Stevenage Athletic squad in full training mode. The “When” was August 1969. The “Where” is in the playing field of the school next door to the Broadhall Way stadium (St Margaret Clitheroe Primary). The “What” is a question I’m really sorry I posed (!)
INTER-CITY BORO So, now we’re down to our very last away game of the season - and absolutely vital it is too. On Saturday April 30th, our last foray of the 2021-22 season is the long haul up to Carlisle. We depart Stevenage at 8:30am and the cost for members is £35. Who of you will join Boro the Bear on this vital end-of-season game? While you’re there, you might also want to check out the excellent statue of Hugh McIlmoyle outside the ground at Brunton Park. Booking details for this trip can be found here.
STATUES You may recall in a past article that I referred to the fashion of having statues erected at football grounds - an article that prompted some debate. This afternoon’s guests, Tranmere, have a statue of the late, great Johnny King at Prenton Park.

A recent check on the Sporting Statues website identifies that there are now some 122 football-related statues in the country situated in various locations. 37 league clubs already have them, with plans for another 8 clubs in the near future. Ok, Man United top the charts with 6, but in our division alone (along with Tranmere) we have Swindon, Carlisle, Port Vale, Northampton with statues and Bristol Rovers currently planning one too. Time for one at Stevenage? Who should it be, and why? Discuss. Keep the faith. LLOYD BRISCOE Chair - Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association
