“We need our supporters to be loud, proud & behind us on Saturday.”
Good afternoon and welcome to the players and officials of Walsall for today’s fixture at The Lamex Stadium. I’d also like to welcome both sets of supporters; it’s been a challenging week with the weather so I’m delighted so many of you have made it here for the match. I’d like to open my notes by saying how much I have enjoyed my first month with Stevenage and although it’s only been a short period, I feel I am really starting to settle into the role as CEO now. Over the last few weeks, I have been very grateful for the welcome I have received from the Chairman, Board, Staff and Supporters and I look forward to playing my part in driving this Club forward off the field and supporting the team on it. Over the course of time, I will be reviewing every aspect of how we run the Club across all departments and looking at what we do well and how we can improve on certain elements as I see tremendous potential at this football club and I’m keen for us to embrace this. Ultimately, we want to continue to build up our
fanbase, increase our match day crowds and ensure you our supporters have a great experience whether its on match day, purchasing tickets, merchandise or simply using all our media platforms for news and content about your Club. As a Club, we will be keeping a close eye on how discussions continue regarding the Fan Led Review and the Government’s recently released White Paper relating to an independent regulator overseeing the financial sustainability of the game - this can only be a big positive for us. The EFL have also recently gone out with a tender for the next set of broadcasting rights from the 2024/25 season which will shape how EFL matches can be consumed in the future.
Finally, I wanted to say a huge thank you for your support of the team at home and away. We’re in a fantastic position in the league and the team really thrive off the noise you generate every game. Get behind them again today and as we go for the home win.
Enjoy the match.

A big Boro welcome goes to our team of mascots for this afternoon’s clash with Walsall. Indeed we have four Boro backers hoping that they have the good luck needed to get our home campaign back on track. First up we say hello to Cain Pannell who lives in Stevenage and attends Marriotts School. Cain is 12 years of age but will be celebrating his 13th birthday next Saturday so happy birthday for then! He lists football and Xbox as his hobbies and his favourite players are Carl Piergianni and Danny Rose. Next we welcome Lucas Wojtas to the Lamex. Lucas is 11 and attends Giles School. His hobbies include both playing
and watching football and his favourite players are Mason Mount and Robert Lewandowski. Our third mascot this afternoon is Teddy Pickersgill. Teddy will be 11 on Monday so happy birthday for then! His hobbies include football and swimming. Last, but not least, we give a warm welcome to our final mascot of the day, Viktor Krasniqi. Living in Stevenage, Viktor attends Giles School and the 11-year-old marked his most recent birthday last week. His favourite player is Luke Norris. We hope all our mascots have a fantastic time with us and that we all go home with a smile after the game today!

Boro’ hosted a crowd of 2,973 for their final home game of the Sky Bet League One 2013/14 season and hadn’t tasted victory since March 8. As a result relegation to the fourth tier had already been confirmed.
The scoring was opened by the hosts as Okenabirhie chipped a cross into Jimmy Smith’s path, the midfielder then brilliantly controlled the airborne cross and volleyed a strike into the bottom left corner.
Boro held on to half time but the lead was short-lived in the second half as Walsall’s Mal Benning scored to make it 1-1 in the 46th minute.
Four minutes later, Walsall had turned
the game on its head as Romaine Sawyers unleashed a shot from distance, a shot which Chris Day could only parry out into Craig Westcarr’s welcoming possession as he tapped the ball home to give the visitors the lead. However, it became Stevenage’s turn to craft their own comeback, which was kickstarted by Joe N’Guessan whose run behind Walsall’s goalscorer, Benning, allowed him to calmly curl his shot beyond goalkeeper, Richard O’Donnell. This end-to-end game was then decided by Luke Freeman as he latched onto a loose chested pass across the box by Benning and passed the ball into the Walsall net to snatch three points for Stevenage.

FIRST GAME?
First game I can remember ever going to was away to Kidderminster in the 2009/10 season where we first got promoted into the football league.
WHICH SECTION OF THE GROUND DO YOU NORMALLY WATCH THE MATCHES FROM?
Always been in the east terrace. Best atmosphere and closet to the game.
BEST MEMORY OF SUPPORTING BORO?
It’s a tie between Stevenage getting promoted into league one via the playoffs at old Trafford and both Norris goals agains tranmere last season keeping us up.
FAVOURITE ALL-TIME PLAYER (AND WHY)?
Jon Ashton because he was the reason why I wanted to start playing at the back while playing Sunday league.
FAVOURITE CURRENT PLAYER (AND WHY)?
Norris because he’s from the area and always plays for the badge no matter what.
WHY DO YOU LOVE BORO?
Local team and was the first game of football I’ve ever seen live and always loved them.
FAVOURITE BORO SHIRT? 2013/14 home shirt.
It took us eight tries – but 2017, our most recent outing on this date in history, finally saw Boro’ end up on the correct side of the result. Before that, 11 March had tended to be a miserable affair for us. And we hope that our memorable two-goal win at Kenilworth Road six years ago is the start of a positive run – rather than being an exception to a rule. You could argue the tide may have turned three years before that too.
Jimmy Smith scored a last-minute equaliser at home to Preston North End; stopping us from posting what would have been a sixth straight defeat on 11 March. The draw itself even took us out of the League One relegation zone on goal difference. But that wouldn’t last. Such was our dismal form on this date in history that Burton Albion even gave us a two-goal head start on this date in 2006. Dino Maamria and Darryn Stamp had looked to have stopped the rot. But the Brewers hit back hard; leaving us on the wrong end of the scoreline and – ultimately – falling short in that season’s Nationwide Conference playoff race.
A win rate of 25% against the Saddlers seems less than ideal on the face of it. But three wins from 12 encounters is the return for both sides here today; the remaining six ending

Our most recent home outing against today’s guests delivered our most recent three points against them. And it’s also notable for having been Paul Tisdale’s first victory as Boro’ manager. Happier times for the exExeter City and MK Dons gaffer, we think it’s fair to say. But ultimately a rare highlight in his brief tenure with the club.
It had been around seven weeks since we’d last won a game. But we were gifted the ideal start when Rollin Menayese turned Luke O’Neill’s cross into his own net. The match was only 25 seconds old at that point. There were only another seven-or-so minutes on the clock when Chris Lines headed home from Jake Reeves’ cross to make it two.
Brendan Kiernan reduced the deficit with 20 minutes remaining; something that no doubt had the potential to cause a lot of nervousness around the Lamex. Luckily, it wasn’t the case and Jake Taylor sealed the points in stoppage time.
One of our most recent arrivals at the Lamex, Adam Przybek, reunites with his most recent employers before us today. Other players to have featured for both sides include Jamille Matt, Charlie Lakin, Scott Laird, Romeo Hutton, Alex Reid, and David Perpetuini. Go back even further and you can include Darren Rogers and Wayne Dyer too.

It’s been a busy period for the professional development phase here in the academy since I started full time at the beginning of January after moving from the U16’s. We started this calendar year a long way adrift in the league so we set the boys a big target of finishing in the top four to enable us to play in the new merit league one until the end of the season. They reached superbly to the challenge and earned 20 points out of a possible 27 and ended in third which was a real credit to their application every day in and around the building. We have now entered the new merit league and played our first game vs Plymouth Argyle last weekend drawing 0-0.
We have now put most of our second years out on loan at multiple non league clubs, Bedford Town, Arlesey, Cambridge City, Kempston Rovers, Hertford Town FC, Biggleswade Town and Potters Bar Town FC. This is a new and big challenge for our youngsters to go and compete in senior football for the first time and will add to their competitiveness, physicality and understanding of being around senior players.
Our schoolboys (U16’s) who are starting full time in with us in the Summer are now gradually being amalgamated into our current full time scholars group during training once a week to hopefully get them up to speed quicker than they may have previously done so.
I hope you all enjoy the day and we get those massive three points in our push for automatic promotion! Up the Boro!

Stevenage FCW advanced to the quarter finals of the Eastern Region Women’s Football League Cup after a comfortable victory over the imperious Barking Ladies, who have a strong grip at the top of the division below. Boro’, who currently sit atop the Premier Division, had shown tremendous professionalism in seeing off the challenge of the Essex side and secured yet another game against Royston Town Ladies – a side they will have faced no less than four times by the end of the season.
Boro’ found their rhythm immediately. Rosy Wodhams – the eventual Player of the Match - set the tone when she curled in a phenomenal right footed cross into the path of top scorer, Amy Makewell who could not quite stretch high enough to make contact with the ball. Five minutes later, Stevenage were ahead. Lucy Webster took a short throw to Makewell who turned and hooked a tasty ball into the eighteen yard box. Adella
Jackson called for the ball but could not claim it through the growing crowd and the ball dropped to the feet of Emily Schofield who would make no mistake from close range for her first cup goal since the County Cup Final of 2022. Schofield was on a mission from that point onward and the hard-working forward nearly doybled the scoreline with an absolute thunderbolt from her right foot that crashed off the crossbar to safety. At the opposite end Barking were spurred into action as they took advantage of a stray ball. Sarah Finch foreshadowed later events as she had two attempts in quick succession, both of which were bravely blocked by the consistent Nicole Farmer.
After a lull in opportunities Stevenage carved out another opportunity, this time down the left flank.
Wodhams put Makewell through, but she was unable to turn her marker. Instead she laid the ball off to Schofield at the edge of the box who received her reward as she expertly placed the ball into the bottom right corner, beyond Jackson. Barking were stunned into action. Their best chance came from a fantastic effort by Finch, that was turned behind by Mia O’Brien for a corner. The ball was swung in and Finch finally stuck the ball into

the net to reduce the arrears. Stevenage were determined to restore their advantage though. The continual energy of the team was on display as Wodhams won the ball back high up the pitch and advanced into the box. Her attempted pass deflected back into her path creating an opportunity which the young midfielder took without question, firing Boro’ back into a two goal lead. Webster saw an opportunity fly over the bar before the halftime whistle, but it was her shot after it that led to the final goal of the game. Her excellent run into the box gave her the perfect opportunity to shoot. The captain did exactly that but the goalkeeper could not hold it and as it squirmed through her hands, Makewell pounced to put the fixture to bed.
The rest of the match was notable for missed opportunities but also for a celebratory reason as Jess Poulter became the first player from the ETC (Emerging Talent Centre) at Stevenage to play for the first team. This was announced in September as the FA chose Stevenage to host one of the centres and this was a landmark
moment for the club.
Manager Fadi Mazloum was content at the final whistle as he said “We controlled the game well and didn’t give them the chance to play. Jess controls the game well at CDM for the development side and you could see that in some of the tackles she made when she came on.” Poulter herself remarked, “I was hopeful I could get some time to show what I can do. I really enjoyed it.” A feeling that was no doubt shared by the whole Boro’ team as they travelled back to Hertfordshire.
On February 24th February, Stevenage FC Foundation hosted their first ever CoSpace cup. Aimed at local businesses and adults, the tournament saw 9 times battle it out to be crowned the Co-Space Cup
2023 champions, with two groups, semifinals, and A tense final. Firstly, a huge shoutout to our teams:
• Unreal Madrid
• Bayern Brew
• Bracey’s FC
• FFF (Football for Fathers) Diamond
• Readie FC
• 24 on the 24th
• FFF (Football for Fathers) Gold
• Rebound FC
• Brazilliant
The day started with our group stage, which saw some great goals, saves and football on display, with 5 teams in group A and 4 teams in group B battling it out to finish within with the top 2 to qualify for the Semi-Finals.
Onto the semis, where Readie FC were narrowly beaten by FFF Gold and A few goals for 24 on the 24th saw them beat Bayern Brew shaping a very competitive final between the two. The final could have gone either way, and only saw one goal in extra time for 24 on the 24th who owe a big thanks to their goalkeeper who ensured it was kept that way and became our first ever Co-Space Cup champions!
Alongside this, we had a raffle to raise some additional funds for the foundation, increasing our total to just shy of £2,000. A big thank you to all the businesses and people that donated some amazing prizes, including Match tickets to a West Ham home game & Stevenage FC match tickets.
William Stokes, Co-Space CEO & CoFounder said “I am immensely proud of the fundraising efforts put in by Stevenage FC Foundation, local business teams and our Co-Space members. We believe strongly in community and it’s events like this that show what can be achieved when we come together and have fun. This was the first Co-Space Cup and after it’s success, we look forward to more to come!”
Foundation CEO, Joe Goude said “We’re so grateful to the team at Co-Space for organising a fantastic first Co-Space Cup. William and Jess have been really supportive of the work we are doing in the local community, and the money they’ve raised will help us to continue to do that work day in day out. A massive thank you to all the teams that took part, and we can’t wait till next year”.
Finally, a thank you to our refs, and helpers on the day and all the teams for coming together to raise the money for us. We look forward to Co-Space Cup 2024!

It really has been a mixed bag for Walsall this season, but what has been clear is that a propensity to draw games has cost them dear.
Back in the day going unbeaten was always a positive, but now with three points for a win, clubs will rightly swap a couple of draws for a defeat and a success. It is a sign that Michael Flynn is now getting his hands firmly on the role at Walsall after spending almost five years at Newport.
Starting his first full season at the club Flynn has seen his charges mix it with the best and has only just ended the Saddlers FA Cup run with a 1-0 reverse at home to Premier League Leicester. During the run Walsall won at Stockport and Wycombe and earned a 2-1 win at home to Carlisle. In the league a recent run of draws has seen their play-off charge stutter, but if the Saddlers can recapture the form from the turn of the year when they won four out of five, they could still have a major say in the battle at the top.
Creative midfielder Isaac Hutchinson joined the Saddlers from Derby County in June 2022.
The 22-year-old spent eight years in Brighton & Hove Albion’s youth system and attracted interest from Sparta
Prague before he joined Southend United in 2018. He made a dream start at Roots Hall, scoring on his debut in a 3-1 win over Cambridge United in the EFL Trophy. Hutchinson played 40 times for the Shrimpers and caught the eye of Derby who signed him in October 2020 and he made his Rams debut in the FA Cup against Chorley in January 2021. Later that month, he signed for Forest Green Rovers on loan and helped them qualify for the play-offs. He returned to Pride Park in the summer of 2021 and scored his first goal for Derby in a Carabao Cup tie against Salford City in August. Hutchinson was on the move again in January 2022 as he joined Crawley Town on loan and scored twice in 19 appearances, including a cracking strike against the Saddlers back in April.
Michael Flynn was appointed Walsall Head Coach in February 2022. He spent four-and-a-half years as Newport County’s manager where he reached two Sky Bet League Two play-off finals.
Flynn’s Newport also enjoyed good cup runs and faced the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City during his time at Rodney Parade. Born in Newport, as a player he had four spells with the club while also making appearances for Wigan, Gillingham, Blackpool Huddersfield and Bradford.

The fans and supporters of Walsall are represented by the board of the Walsall Football Supporters’ Trust. I bid a warm welcome to the board of the trust, whose members are likely to be here this afternoon, and comprise: Trevor Reece (chair), Bob Thomas (vice-chair), Ray Dale (sec.), Neil Ravenscroft (treas.), Helen Thorpe-Wood, Steve Davies and Nick Matthews. I hope all the Saddlers fans here at The Lamex have a great day out in Stevenage, and a safe journey home after the match.
As our season progresses, we have two cracking away games to a couple of our closest challengers coming up.
On Saturday March 18th, we journey all the way to Carlisle United. It’s a bumnumbing 550 mile round trip to Brunton Park and our bus departs at 8:30am. At a cost of just £40 each for members, who of you will come with us to the largest football stadium in England that is not all-seated?
Then, on Saturday April 1st, a much shorter journey beckons as the Stevenage “Six Hills Army” goes to Sixfields. Northampton is our destination. “Cobblers”, I hear you say – and you’d be right! £20 gets you there and back in the comfort and safety of the Boro Bus. Departing Broadhall Way at 12:00 noon, we need as many of you as can make the journey for this one.

Get thee there with Boro the Bear – and his mates.
The Football Supporters’ Association has teamed up with an organisation called Pledgeball. It’s all about doing our bit to tackle the climate crisis and improve things for match-going fans.
Many of you will remember our recent home game against Bradford, when the SFC Foundation promoted the “Green Football Weekend” initiative – the world’s biggest football campaign to tackle climate change. Pledgeball was the driving force behind this scheme and has already teamed up with many clubs and supporters’ groups to get the message across.
The FSA and Pledgeball believe that football can be an enormous force for good to drive positive change and reduce the game’s environmental impact. For example, Pledgeball challenges the notion of some games being broadcast live when it is impossible for match-going fans to use public transport. Pledgeball also cites the necessity for clubs to change their replica shirts every season, inferring that the “level of waste is staggering”.
The Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association is committed to working alongside Stevenage FC and the Foundation to realise its objectives to improve the environment.
This year, Stevenage Day is on Sunday June 11th. It is the largest free event of its type in Hertfordshire. Held on the King George V’s Playing Fields, over 30,000 people attended in 2022, and this year the themes include the King’s Coronation and Womens Football. Doubtless the senior club will be represented as per usual, and the SA is thinking of having a stall too. More details later.
