PAUL TISDALE All photos by Jim Steele unless otherwise stated

ood afternoon and welcome to The Lamex Stadium for this afternoon’s game against Walsall. We have had a positive last few weeks in many ways, although we have only got one point to show for it in terms of results on the pitch. That draws me to a couple of things. One is that we are disappointed only to have that one point because our last three away performances have warranted more. Four or five points would have been a fair reflection of the performances and the chances created. We are aware of the need to convert performance into results, but it is a positive that we have been performing well.

“OUR PERFORMANCES, THE NEW PLAYERS AND MORE TIME IS HAVING A POSITIVE EFFECT” Secondly, there has been real decisive work and commitment off the pitch to refresh and align the squad to what is needed for the second half of the season. We have made significant moves in the transfer market, and that has shown in the environment at the training ground tangibly stepping up and improving. It is not just a technical improvement, but it has a feel-good impact on the rest of the squad when these players arrive. I have only been here for five weeks, and that is not a lot. The first few weeks didn’t give me much time to engage with the players considering the Saturday, Tuesday schedule, but now the last two weeks have given me the opportunity to connect

www.stevenagefc.com

and impact the squad’s direction on how we are going to move forward. We have to work hard, there is no question about that. Everything we need to do has to be fully aligned. We have to have an intent to what we are doing, and we are doing just that. The three areas of performance, new players and time are having a positive effect on what we are doing.

ood afternoon and welcome to the players and officials of Walsall. It is great to be kicking off 2022 with a stronger squad. Six days in and five new players signed – that is good business. It has been costly, but we have taken an aggressive stance to bring in the players Paul wants, as well as a new first team coach in Jimmy Ball. Firstly, on the goalkeeping front, Christy Pym is a top keeper that played 45 games in Peterborough’s automatic promotion to the Championship last season. He has worked with Paul and Mel for several years and we had no hesitation in meeting Posh’s payment requirements to secure him until the end of the season. Next in the door was Luke O’Neill, a solid, experienced League One right back that Paul highlighted. Michael Bostwick was flagged to us last week, Paul liked him and we acted swiftly to bring him back home on a loan until the end of the season with interest from several other clubs requiring us to act fast. Ed Upson is another that Paul brought to us, having worked with him before and we did the deal with Newport to bring him here. Laurie Walker is the fifth new recruit and another that Paul has worked with before. We quickly concluded a deal with MK Dons that now sees us with two very good goalkeepers. Going in the other direction is Elliot Osborne after we concluded a deal with Altrincham. We know we are not scoring enough goals and we are working hard every day to add that extra bit of fizz to our squad. It is early days in the window – often these types of players do not become available until the end of the window so, as hard as it is, we have to be patient. Paul is delighted with the signings we have made and the short time we have concluded them in. But we are not finished yet...

www.stevenagefc.com

Paul’s aim is to build a team that gets into the top ten of the 23 game ‘second half’ of the league programme that starts on Saturday. Once we achieve that, not only will we be safe but we can start in the summer to use that platform to create a promotion winning side for next season. It is probably worth explaining two things with regard to incoming players. (1) Every manager that has ever managed Stevenage decides on which players are signed. Never in my 21 years owning this Club has it been any other way. The job of myself and the Head of Recruitment is to do the deals and get the players the manager wants, whether that is players they already know or players agents advise are available. It is frantic, but it is fun. (2) We are not short of funds. We were in a very, very bad way financially in 2020 but we secured additional funding late in 2021 that means we can strengthen the budget and now, within reason, compete for any League Two player we want, whilst still making sure we maintain the over-riding, key element of keeping the Club solvent for fans of future generations to enjoy. I want to finish by welcoming all our new players and management. I hope they and everyone else enjoyed the festive season and I wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year. Stay safe and enjoy the match.

hat a time it was as Boro prowled among the big beats of League One, and after this romp over Walsall actually moved into second place in the table. Gary Smith and his side went into the game in confident form and went ahead early on when Robin Shroot fired home after a through ball from David Gray.

But the Saddlers hit back when George Bowerman’s header from Jamie Paterson’s cross found the net and the battle was on. The game turned however with a stunner when Greg Tansey lashed home a 30-yard strike to stun the visitors and the points were sealed when Lucas Akins volleyed in at the back post to end the resistance. BORO

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 08 JANUARY Bad weather or the way in which the festive period messes with the footballing calendar? Either way, this isn’t a date that we’ve seen much action on over the years. Just six occasions in 40+ seasons of senior football is our current tally – and it’ll be the first time in 17 years that we’ve played a league fixture on 8 January. The bad news is that we aren’t known for our good fortune on this particular date. On league duty, we started things off with a 5-1 shellacking at the hands of Desborough Town back in 1983; a result that completed a miserable festive period for Boro’. Not that it’s relevant, but we gained our revenge with a 5-1 win over Ar Tarn later on that season. To be fair, it’s the only defeat to our name on this date across all competitions. Boro’s next three games on the eighth day of the first month ended all square. Goals weren’t in short supply as we shared six with Morecambe in 2000; Carl Alford bagging a brace. And Anthony Elding scored twice in 2005 as we claimed a point against York City. In cup competition, however, today has been a good day historically. It’s now 11 years since we met Newcastle United in our FA Cup R3 clash in front of ESPN

16

cameras. The swagger with which we ousted the Premier League side was a joy to behold. It’s also something that has been sorely lacking in successive Boro’ squads for some years now. How much you want to pay attention to our 1-0 triumph at Bristol Rovers in the Leasing. com Trophy two years ago on this date is up to you. It does mean that Boro’ come into today’s meeting with Walsall off the back of two wins on the bounce on 8 January. But taking three league points on this date is not something we’ve ever done before. The gauntlet is laid. 1983 Desborough Town 5-1 Stevenage Borough, United Counties League Premier Division (Gittings) 1996 Stevenage Borough 0-0 Farnborough Town, GM Vauxhall Conference 2000 Morecambe 3-3 Stevenage Borough, Nationwide Conference (Alford 2, Morrison) 2005 Stevenage Borough 2-2 York City, Nationwide Conference (Elding 2) 2011 Stevenage 3-1 Newcastle United, FA Cup R3 (OG, Bostwick, Winn) 2020 Bristol Rovers 0-1 Stevenage, Leasing.com Trophy R3 (MackailSmith)

YOU AGAIN? WALSALL So, what odds on a draw against the Saddlers today? If history is anything to go by, that could well be where the smart money is. In 10 previous meetings with the West Midlanders, we’ve shared the spoils on five occasions; averaging one goal FOR per game – and, would you believe, averaging one goal AGAINST per game. It’s almost completely balanced. The ‘almost’ is because our 1-0 defeat at their place earlier this season tipped the balance slightly in their favour. They have won three, we have won two. So, today is also a chance for Boro’ to redress that balance. On one hand, it’s a concern that our most

www.stevenagefc.com

recent win over the Saddlers came more than seven years ago. On the other, we’ve only played them four times since; three of which ended all square and the fourth being the aforementioned 1-0 away defeat. Look at it another way – that was Walsall’s first win over us since October 2013. So, they were in the same boat as us a few months ago. After claiming their first win in this match-up since the 2013-4 League One season, can we do the same? If our past record doesn’t inspire you that much, one thing we can say is that we’ve never lost to the Saddlers at the Lamex. All their wins in this fixture have come on their own turf. That’s despite even gifting them a freak lead inside the first 60 seconds when we met here last season. Now we’re past the festive period, there’s no need to be that charitable again this afternoon.

ACADEMY

ood afternoon everyone and on behalf of the Academy we wish everyone a Happy New Year. The end of year for the Academy was an excellent period with players transitioning to the 1st team and seeing a debut for 1st year scholar Owen Cochrane. The results at U18 under Chris and Ronnie have been excellent and the boys ended the season with a run of 7 unbeaten and we have moved into 3rd position following an impressive performance and victory v AFC Wimbledon. Our U16s currently sit top of their league as well to fill us with optimism for the future. We move into the New Year full of excitement not only with two league titles to play for but also pro contracts to earn. And earn is the correct word. It’s a tough world in League 2 and in many ways getting the opportunity is very difficult and rare to get. When these opportunities come along our job is to make sure our players are ready and can be trusted to step up and make the transition seamlessly. It’s a big ask and first impressions are everything especially when due to the current environment the academy squad train away from the 1st team. Behind the scenes we have been busy

making sure the group have all the support needed to give them every chance to succeed. Alex Revell has rejoined the Academy and will work with Ronnie and Chris on the pitch with the U18s and Luke O’Reilly has now joined us on a full time basis to work not only with the U18s but also our very talented schoolboy GK’s. The support from the board to be able to implement these changes has been incredible and it’s our job to make sure we underpin this support with producing players ready to jump in. As said earlier opportunity is everything and we have to make sure that the notion of when talent meets opportunity you get success comes true for the Club. THE BOSS Matthew Taylor was appointed as Walsall Head Coach in May 2021. He joined the club after a spell at Tottenham Hotspur where he had been part of the coaching staff at the Premier League club concentrating on the performance of Spurs’ young talent. He also had a brief spell as Swindon Town’s interim manager in 2018 after the departure of David Flitcroft. A year later, he acquired his UEFA Pro License. As a player, Taylor represented Portsmouth, Bolton Wanderers, West Ham United and Burnley in the Premier League, making over 300 appearances. He also had spells at Luton Town, Northampton Town and Swindon Town in the EFL.

ONE TO WATCH Walsall signed attacking midfielder Otis Khan on a short-term deal in October 2021 on a free transfer. Khan spent the 2020/21 season at Tranmere Rovers where he played 49 times and helped them reach the play-offs. He began his professional career at Sheffield United and enjoyed loan spells at Buxton, Matlock Town and Barrow during his time at Bramall Lane. In the summer of 2016, he joined Yeovil Town in League Two where he really kickstarted his career. He spent two years at Huish Park and scored 18 goals in 87 appearances. Khan’s form attracted the attention of Mansfield Town who signed him for an undisclosed fee in June 2018. He netted four times during his spell at Field Mill prior to a loan move to Newport County in January 2020. His spell at Tranmere followed before his departure from Prenton Park in the summer of 2021 and he remained a free agent until his move to the Banks’s Stadium.

LATEST NEWS WELCOME WALSALL This afternoon we welcome Matthew Taylor and his team, which is likely to prove to be an interesting and entertaining game. Who of you here this afternoon will remember Tommy Watson who used to play for Stevenage back in the early/mid 1960’s? We sold Tommy to Peterborough where he netted 20 goals in 75 appearances. Tommy then moved on to have 86 games over two seasons (1968-70), scoring 17 goals with The Saddlers.

STEVENAGE SA LOTTERY The year ended with a flurry of winners (8 in total) and Christmas really did come early for David Hulks when his number won the 2nd prize of £1,000. Launched in the autumn of 2020 and now in its second year the SA Lottery is averaging 2 winners every single week. It is proving a win-win for both players and the SA in the support for our Club. If you’re not on board yet come and join us, go to the SA website follow the links and for a minimum of just £1.00 per week. We would love to see you. Congratulations to David and thank you to everyone who has signed up so far.

50/50 TICKETS Don’t forget to get your 50/50 tickets from the SA sellers this afternoon. Strategically located throughout the stadium, the SA team will be glad to sell you as many tickets as you like. Drawn at half time, the likelihood of a ‘big win’ should be good today. Incidentally, this afternoon’s archive photo is that of our ticket sellers back in 1967. These young ladies were attired in the club’s colours of red skirts and white tops. They comprise

Sadly, we had to cancel the bus to Salford on December 18th due to insufficient numbers subscribing. Always a difficult thing to do, we simply cannot run a bus if it isn’t financially viable to do so. Details of the SA bus to our forthcoming away game at Hartlepool on January 22nd can be found here.
