THE CHAIRMAN

PHIL WALLACE

G

ood afternoon and welcome to the players, and officials of Walsall FC. As we go into Saturday’s game, we do so on the back of another away win and another 3 points. I was absolutely delighted for the players and management when Elliot Osborne’s wonderful strike hit the back of the net ! The pressure has been – and still is - non stop, with no time for training or rest, but the response from our lads has been magnificent. Now they have to deliver again and keep it going. Our points tally over the last 6 home games is automatic promotion form and over the last 12 games – a decent chunk of our season – just under 1.6 points/game, which isn’t far from a play off place if we’d had a decent start. The point is that we knew we had work to do at the end of 2020 and we did it. Better players, stronger management, improved team spirit and the results of that are beginning to come through. We’re not where we want to be yet, but we are a long way further forward

www.stevenagefc.com

than when we started the season. We’ve transitioned from being a poor side to being a decent side. What we need to do next is transition from being a decent side to being a free scoring side that competes for titles. I’m confident we’re on the right path and that we’ll do all we can to keep improving. In a couple of days’ time we’ll all have a better idea of when life will begin to return to normal as the government release their roadmap to normality. Having fans back for the end of the season would be simply magnificent. We’ve missed you! Whether that will happen or not we’ll have to wait and see but until we know we’ll keep doing everything to the best of our ability on and off the pitch. It’s hard for us all to encourage our lads and get behind the team, but the streaming service has been very welcome to watch the action live and we are keen to improve that service by presenting our own pre-game show. More on this later. Enjoy the game. COYB…

TERENCE VANCOOTEN NAMED GCIS JANUARY PLAYER OF THE MONTH Stevenage supporters voted for the 23-year-old defender as the winner of the award, beating out fellow nominees Elliott List, Charlie Carter and Luther James-Wildin. Since coming into the side at the start of December, Vancooten has nailed down a regular starting spot in the heart of Boro’s defence, playing 90 minutes in each of the last 12 league games and helping keep 5 clean sheets during that spell. His performances have seen him rise up the WhoScored (official statistics partner of the EFL) rankings and is currently 15th out of all Sky Bet League Two players, with an averate rating of 7.15. “I am really happy to receive this award,” Vancooten said. “I would like to thank everyone that voted for me as it means a lot on a personal level. Most importantly though, as a team we have been picking up some really good results so I am just delighted that I have been able to help contribute to that.”

e go back to a Tuesday night game in front of the lights and supporters (remember them?) as Boro entertained Canvey in Conference action. The home side came into this game in fourth spot and made light work of claiming the three points. With just 16 minutes gone the writing was on the wall when Dino Maamria headed home for the lead from the first real chance of the game.

Despite a lively midfield of Miller, Bulman and Boyd, Boro had just a single goal lead at the break though they doubled this on 54 minutes when Jefferson Louis headed in following a neat Eric Obinna cross. Louis again came close as Boro did all the running before they finally grabbed the decisive third two minutes from the end, George Boyd finding the net with a strike from 18 yards which sent the crowd of 1,403 home happy. BORO

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 20 FEBRUARY It took long enough for Boro’ to get into the winning habit on this day in history. And, even then, we haven’t been able to make it stick. Two wins from eight matches is our return on 20 February; the first of which came at the sixth time of asking in 2007. That came at Stafford Rangers in the Blue Square Premier, with Steve Morison scoring twice in a fixture that had been pushed back from early January when the weather intervened. Fresh from breaking our duck on this date, Boro’ doubled up three years later when Workington came to town for our FA Trophy Quarter Final. Again, one player seized the initiative with a brace of goals to see us through to the win. This time, it was Stacy Long; the midfielder steering us past the stubborn resistance put up by our lower-league opponents that day. And it’d be a near(ish) neighbour of the Reds we’d play next on this date – albeit a long six years later. On 20 February 2016, then-caretaker gaffer Darren Sarll took us up to Carlisle United where Jabo Ibhere’s second-half strike proved decisive. Ryan Hedges could and maybe should’ve have earned us a point late on, however. That defeat is one of three on this date. The first, in 1988, also ended 1-0 to our opponents. Back then, it was against Hampton FC (years before they added Richmond to their name). We welcomed the Beavers to Broadhall Way a week after being thrashed 5-1 at the Beveree Stadium; a game that did, to be fair, end a run of four straight league matches without a goal. Boro’ drew a blank again in the home fixture, however, and the Beavers won it by a single goal. As well as the two wins and three defeats, there have also been three draws – all by the same 1-1 scoreline. The first, in 1982,

16

saw us and Irchester Eastfield cancel each other out in the UCL League Cup. It proved costly for a Boro’ team who were the reigning cup holders and now a division higher than the Romans. Four days later, we were knocked out; losing on penalties in the replay at Alfred Street. Who knew it’d be 25 years before we’d finally win on 20 February? 1982 Stevenage Borough 1-1 Irchester Eastfield, United Counties League Knockout Cup Quarter Final 1988 Stevenage Borough 0-1 Hampton, Vauxhall Opel League Division One 1993 Harrow Borough 3-1 Stevenage Borough, Diadora League Premier Division 1995 Yeovil Town 1-1 Stevenage Borough, FA Trophy Round Two 1999 Leek Town 1-1 Stevenage Borough, Football Conference 2007 Stafford Rangers 1-3 Stevenage Borough, Blue Square Premier 2010 Stevenage Borough 2-1 Workington, FA Trophy Quarter Final 2016 Carlisle United 1-0 Stevenage, Sky Bet League Two

YOU AGAIN? WALSALL Our head-to-head record against the Saddlers is almost perfect symmetry;

Stevenage FC v Walsall FC

Boro’s nine goals to Walsall’s eight is all that you can really draw between the two clubs. We’ve played eight times since our first encounter in 2011. We’ve won two and so have they. The other four, as you’ve probably now guessed, ended in stalemate – including our two most recent meetings. But that doesn’t mean we don’t have plenty of stories to tell from our time with the Saddlers. In December 2011, keeper Jimmy Walker was the Saddlers’ hero as he repelled the Boro’ attack and earned his team a goalless draw. In the return game at the Banks’s Stadium, it was our turn to need a hero and Michael Bostwick obliged with a 25-yard leveller on the hour mark. Neither of us was going to get the better of each other that season. Fast forward past the 2012-13 season to our ill-fated 2013-4 League One campaign when Craig Westcarr came back to haunt us at their place; putting the Saddlers’ two goals up in a match we’d go on to lose 2-1 and have Lucas Akins sent off. We did have our revenge in the return fixture. By then, however, it was too late to save us. Luke Freeman

www.stevenagefc.com

scored a late winner as we ended a run of 11 games without a win – one that had already confirmed our return to League Two. That’d be that between us for five years. Not until the 2019-20 season would we meet again, with the Saddlers losing their own battle for League One survival. We only managed to squeeze in one meeting before Covid-19 struck, though. And it summed up our efforts last season too. Uninspiring in front of goal, we had to call on the woodwork to save us deep into stoppage time to earn a point that hauled us off the foot of the table. It was downhill from then on. And so this season, renewing acquaintances at the Banks’s Stadium in December. Ever the story to be told, Boro’ had a three-point haul in the grasp of our hands; a first away win since Cambridge United in January. It wasn’t to be. If we’re able to take anything from this fixture, it’s that we love a draw. And that’s just what Josh Gordon’s 91stminute penalty earned after Aramide Oteh had put us ahead on 50 minutes likewise, from the penalty spot.

Char McLucas Full-back

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF? I grew up in Enfield playing football on the streets with the boys and then moved when I started secondary school. I’ve been a big Spurs fan all my life and my dad finally took me to my first game when I turned 7. WHAT CLUBS HAVE YOU PREVIOUSLY PLAYED FOR? I started off playing for St. Mary’s boy’s team and then joined Spurs when I was 7 until I was 21 when I got injured and took a year out, before joining Stevenage. WHAT IS YOUR DAY JOB OUTSIDE OF FOOTBALL? I work in HR for an Independent Boys school and Girls school. HOW DO YOU FIND JUGGLING FOOTBALL, TRAINING AND YOUR DAY JOB? Football and work don’t usually clash because I mainly work standard office hours. Football is my escape so having that to look forward to and break up the week helps. It doesn’t usually take long to get to training so doesn’t cause any problems. CAN YOU TELL ME WHO YOUR FOOTBALLING IDOL OR ROLE MODEL WAS WHILST GROWING UP AND WHY? From a young age my dad was always my idol, he would take me over the park lay out some cones and have me practice. Even in the garden he would have me working on my first touch and score it out of 10. I would always look to him for advice and was lucky enough to have him as my manager at spurs for a few years with a very successful team.

26

Stevenage FC v Walsall FC

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE FEMALE FOOTBALLER AND WHY? Alex Scott has to be my favourite female footballer definitely, she was an incredible defender and she’s done so much for the women’s game, she’s an inspiration. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHT OR ACHIEVEMENT THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF? I’ve had so many highlights, I was lucky enough to be a part of a very successful Spurs team, but for me one of the best moments was being able to play alongside my sister in the Spurs senior team. We had grown up kicking the ball around together, so to get the opportunity to play on the same team was a feeling you never forget. IT HAS BEEN A STOP START SEASON SO FAR AND AFTER LAST SEASON BEING DECLARED NULL VOID. HOW DO YOU FEEL THE SEASON HAS GONE FOR YOU PERSONALLY? I think it has been frustrating for all of us as all any of us want to do is just play. I was so excited when the season restarted again so for it to be put on hold again was just disappointing. I’m just trying to keep myself fit and excited for the season to get under way again. HOW HAVE YOU BEEN KEEPING FIT AND ACTIVE DURING LOCKDOWN? I owe a lot of my lockdown fitness to our coaches they set up a competition for us during the 2nd lockdown to keep our fitness levels up, and I’m very competitive so it gave me the motivation to keep active whether

www.stevenagefc.com

it was zoom workouts with the girls or dragging the dog out for a run in the mornings before work. HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR MATCHES AND WHAT DOES YOUR PRE-MATCH ROUTINE LOOK LIKE? I don’t have a specific routine, but I’ve always had pasta the night before a game from a young age and make sure I’ve sorted my kit bag. I usually take one of the girls to the games so the journey to games is always entertaining. DO YOU HAVE ANY PREMATCH SUPERSTITIONS? I wouldn’t say I have any superstitions I just like making sure I leave with enough time and not rushing. if I’m late and rushing I feel like it negatively effects my performance. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FOOTBALL TRICK OR SKILL MOVE TO PULL OUT? I remember when I used to go watch Spurs play and Billy Wingrove would come on the pitch at White Hart Lane at half time, he would do all these cool tricks including catching the ball on his neck. Well he had 3 and I thought it was so cool so I would practice flicking the ball up and catching it on my neck and doing press ups. WHO MAKES YOUR ULTIMATE DREAM TEAM XI [OF FEMALE FOOTBALLERS]? Christine Endler, Alex Scott, Lucy Bronze, Steph Houghton, Leah Williamson, Fran Kirby, Nikita Parris, Delphine Cascarino, Rachel Yankey, Kelly Smith, Vivianne Miedema. FOLLOW THE WOMEN:

elcome to todays’ game against Walsall. It is great to see the upturn in results, this was only a matter of time with the players and characters within the dressing room and we’re hoping for another 3 points today to carry on the surge up the table. Now time to talk about Academy life and the great work that goes on. During these challenging times it has been a credit to the football club and the Academy to remain running as smoothy as possible and keep life for our Academy as close to normal as possible at the moment. During the last couple of weeks we have had another really competitive U23’s fixture against Brentford FC B Team at Hanwell FC. The game was an opportunity for players to get minutes in their legs and get closer to first team football. The success of these games was evident after Elliott Osborne’s 84th minute winner against Crawley Town and Harry Draper’s inclusion in the squad. One pleasing factor was the attitude and application of senior players who have come into these games and taken it as an opportunity to get fitter and sharper and hopefully make inroads into Alex Revell’s

www.stevenagefc.com

first team. The fixtures have allowed myself, Jorden and other senior staff to bridge the gap between youth team and first team. These games are competitive and we are seeing the benefits for Academy players to come up against higher calibre opposition to give them a better chance of getting closer to the first team where winning is important. Going forward we are continually working hard behind the scenes to get fixtures to enhance our games programme as decisions on players’ futures gets closer we need to ensure we are providing them with the best opportunities to showcase their abilities to earn a professional contract either here or elsewhere. One bit of sad news is the departure of our Academy Operations Manager Amy Ganderton who is leaving to join Tottenham Hotspur, we thank her for all her hard work and wish her the best for the future. Finally, I know it’s been difficult times not being able to come and watch your Football Club but we will hopefully be able to welcome you back soon! Stay safe and enjoy the game!! WELCOME CLUB MATTERS Walsall FC trace their history back to 1888 and the founding of Walsall Town Swifts, a club which was itself the amalgamation of Walsall Town and Walsall Swifts. They made quick progress in the nonleague world and just four years later in 1892 they were admitted to the newly formed Football League Second Division. Within three years however they were to

fail re-election and left the league set-up for a season. In 1896 they changed their name to the simpler Walsall FC, a good omen which saw them gain their place back in the Football League set-up. Indeed things have never been better than the 1898-99 season which saw them finish in sixth place in Division Two, still the highest place finish in their history! Despite this success they soon failed re-election again, indeed Walsall hold the record for the club with the most failed re-elections in their history, seven in total. The creation of the Third Division North in 1921 saw Walsall back in the Football

League and they have held their place since that time. The Saddlers spent the bulk of their time in the third tier, except for two seasons in the old second division back in the sixties. At this time Allan Clarke also came through the ranks, on his way to England appearances and a league title with Leeds United. After one more season in the second tier in 1988-89, the club hoped to keep their place at that level for the opening of their new ground, the Bescot Stadium, in 1990. Sadly Walsall were relegated once again and since that point have spent the bulk of their time in the third tier. History was made in 2015 when they reached a Wembley final for the first time in their history, losing 2-0 to Bristol City in the Football League Trophy. This season has been one of fits and starts for Walsall although there was a shock on Monday of this week when boss Darrell Clarke made the switch to Port Vale, to be replaced by head coach Brian Dutton.

A total of seven draws in their first 11 games meant Walsall failed to get enough points on the board for a strong start, and although they won four straight in December, they then followed this with a run of three defeats on the bounce. Since then they have won one, drawn one and lost three and sit four points ahead of Boro and seven off of the play-offs.

THE BOSS Brian Dutton was named as head coach until the end of the season on Monday of this week after the shock move of manager Darrell Clarke to Port Vale. The 34-year-old took charge for the visit of Cheltenham. He came to the club with former boss Clarke from Bristol Rovers in May 2019, having had a playing career with Salisbury, Weymouth, Havant and Eastbourne among others. In his time at Rovers, he worked as assistant Under-23 squad coach and played a role in first-team and setpiece coaching, as well as overseas recruitment.

WATCH OUT FOR Josh Gordon finished as Walsall’s top goalscorer with 12 goals in the 2019-20 season. He joined the club from Leicester City in 2018, scoring nine times during his first campaign. The 25-year-old spent eight years with hometown Stoke before taking in spells with non-league clubs Newcastle Town, Nantwich Town and Stafford Rangers, as well as Welsh side Rhyl. He landed a dream move to Leicester in April 2017 and scored six goals in 27 Premier League 2 matches for their Under-23s in 2017/18. Gordon featured against Valencia and Lille in pre-season for the Foxes but was allowed to join the Saddlers on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee in August 2018.

MORECAMBE Back in the early 1960’s a young Scotsman came to Stevenage to help build our ‘new town’. He loved it here and joined a local Sunday football team. He was offered a trial with Stevenage Town and soon earned himself a first team place. Such was his skill and talent that he quickly attracted the interest of a number of League clubs. Stevenage succumbed and in 1965 sold him on to Peterborough where he went on to appear on 75 occasions, scoring 20 goals. In 1968, The Posh sold him on again, this time to Walsall where within two years he’d made 106 appearances scoring 22 goals. He soon became a firm favourite of the fans from Bescot. That young Scotsman was Tommy Watson. Whenever we play Walsall, I always relate to Tommy who, as a spritely 77-year-old - walking 5 miles a day - now enjoys a healthy retirement in Lesmahagow (Lanarkshire), the town of his birth. I bid a cheery welcome to the players and officials of The Saddlers, to our corner of Hertfordshire.

LOCKDOWN LETHARGY Everyone is really fed up with lockdown, and, recognising this, a number of senior football clubs are doing something about it. In collaboration with their supporters’ groups and their own in-house foundations, a number of interesting initiatives are underway. For example: ‘Wolves at Home’ involves welfare phone calls from players to over 2,000 registered supporters to-date.

TOMMY WATSON ‘Pompey PE’ has a series of live workout videos featuring Portsmouth 1st team players targeting supporters in their 7-16 years old age range. Derby County operates virtual primary school lessons for those who are home schooling as well as being a significant hub for the local food bank. Birmingham City are offering free downloadable activity packs to keep their younger fans amused. Football clubs are at the very heart of the communities which they serve, and the examples above illustrate how the clubs need their fans - and the fans need their clubs, especially in unprecedented times such as this. HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY FOOTBALL AT HOME The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform your garden into a proper footy pitch.
