ood afternoon, It’s great to be managing for the first time at the Lamex today in front of our own fans as we welcome Walsall. Looking back from our earlier encounter with Walsall it was an evenly matched game and we will have to be ready for the challenge today. Words can not express my gratitude to everyone since taking over as manager last week. The response has been amazing and all I can say is I am going to give absolutely everything for this very special football club. I feel proud when I walk in each day to manage this group of players and I know we have what it takes to turn our fortunes around. It’s always tough when a manager leaves a football club. I would like to thank Graham on behalf of the football club for all his efforts and commitment. He is a great person and character and we would like to wish him all the best for the future. We cannot hide behind the fact its been a disappointing season so far but we have to look forward. Since taking over, myself and the coaching staff have been very clear and consistent with our message to the players. We need hard work, passion and belief. Belief not only in themselves but in each other as a team. We all know there are no easy fixes in football but I believe to give ourselves the best chance we have to demand 100% effort and commitment every day and have a team spirit that is unbreakable. When you build a strong team mentality and a work ethic that is relentless, passionate and committed all the other skill sets will unlock. Myself, the coaching staff and each individual

player, are all ready to rise to the challenge of the next 10 weeks and give everything we have to this football club. Reflecting on my first game last week against Crawley I felt there were both positives and negatives to take away from the game. I felt that our possession and attacking play showed some real signs of quality but our final ball was lacking and we failed to make the most of some excellent football. Defensively as a team we need to be more solid and organised when we are in possession, as a defender you must always think about the worst case scenario, that is the team will break on us if we lose the ball. We have worked hard in training this week on being more organised on the pitch and improving our final third entries and attacking play. The players have grown in confidence and if we can translate this work into our game today we will have a real chance at winning. I would like to thank you the fans who, in a difficult period have been amazing showing your continued support even though results have not gone our way. You are our twelfth man and with your continued support we can succeed. Enjoy the game. www.stevenagefc.com | 5

fter a season which had started with six straight wins, Boro boss Richard Hill was fast running out of time following a poor

run of form. Somehow the early season success had gone and despite major names fielded such as Carl Alford, Ryan Kirby, Dean Martin and Chris Taylor, Boro once again fell to defeat. A crowd of 1,940 watched this and alas the form wasn’t due to improve any time soon.

ON THIS DAY Saturday February 29, 1992 Stevenage 2 Uxbridge 0 A home clash with Uxbridge may not seem exciting but until today it has been a unique fixture in the history of the Boro. That’s because until this game it has been the only leap year Saturday match played by the club, and so far we have a 100 per cent record on this date, the win coming in the Diadora League Division One thanks to goals from Dave Brown and Shaun Marshall. The attendance was 678 on that day and the Boro juggernaut moved remorselessly to success. Information kindly supplied by www.boroguide.co.uk

ood afternoon and welcome to the Lamex, Firstly, let me start by wishing Alex Revell, his staff and the players the best of luck in today’s fixture v Walsall. Let’s get behind them, I thought the support in the last game was excellent. This month we started our Merit League 1 campaign with a 3-2 defeat to South West champions and Premier League opponent AFC Bournemouth, we travelled down in windy condition but the game itself was very rewarding with some excellent football being played and narrowly losing by a single goal. Within that game we had 6 U16’s and 2 U15’s. The following week was another narrow defeat this time to South East champions Northampton. For anyone who keeps an eye on our results, this league is about promoting from within and an opportunity for younger academy schoolboys to have the chances to go toe to toe against full time apprentices. Although, we all enjoy winning, the long term development gain is the key and we have seen that with the likes of Ben Wilmot, Arthur Iontton and Liam Smyth all being rewarded from this. This morning we are away to Swindon in another tough test for our young lads. In other news, we have rewarded another two U15 schoolboys with a job in the industry they love. First, Harry Giroud who has excelled in recent months and seen him perform for the U18’s. Sam Tinubu, who you will get the pleasure of seeing at half time has also agreed his scholarship and will being signing the final paperwork today with our YDP Lead Ieuan Lewis. Congratulations to both. In loan news, Joe Leslie returned from Stevenage FC v Walsall FC

Biggleswade FC and will now join up with Kings Langley. Jamie Jellis is set to extend his Loan period with Wingate and Finchley and Jack Smith and Liam Smyth have also had their loans extended at Conference South Braintree Town FC. All of these players will benefit hugely from the experience of playing against men daily. They are now joined by another academy graduate Arthur Iontton who has gone out to get additional minutes. I have always kept an eye on former apprentices who I have coached over the years. Former captain Charley O’Keefe is also at Braintree with our current crop and another former captain Zak Guerfi has recently joined following spells in Sweden and Tunisia where he got a call up to the Tunisian national side. Others doing well in football include the likes of Paul Field and Theo Sackey Mensah who are thriving at Loughborough University. Next week Louis Yam Fam is coming in to visit before he heads out to Germany to start a new chapter in his career. I am also pleased to report Harry Draper a first year professional, who suffered a nasty ACL injury is now on the mend after a successful operation. Finally, please lets get behind the lads and drive us on to three points! Come on Boro!

elcome to todays game against Walsall FC. Today we welcome Stevenage FC Women and our Girls Development Centre as part of our Women in Football themed matchday. Our Girls Development Centre currently engages with 65 girls across 4 age groups. Wednesday 19th February saw us host Watford FC and Norwich FC in Girls Development Centre fixtures. Three of our four age groups were in action. U10’s - Across two teams, our u10’s played 8 games, losing just once. The girls played confidently and looked calm and composed on the ball which has been a real focus of the coaches. The girls continue to improve and the teams defended really well and also scored some great goals. U12’s – Our two teams played 12 games

Stevenage FC v Walsall FC

in total, losing just one. The girls played some superb football with some great patterns of play. Both teams looked like they play competitively together every week which is a credit to the way they’ve bonded. All girls were comfortable and confident on the ball and worked well together to score some great goals. U14’s - The u14’s played one game vs Watford FC and a hat-trick from Lilia led them to a 3-1 win. The match showcased another Stevenage side who looked confident in possession and dominated the game. Our defence stood strong to deal with the Watford attacks superbly. The team worked really well through the thirds and again looked great when trying to play football on the floor sliding passes in behind the Watford defence for our strikers to run on to. n Sunday we had a long trip away to league leaders Ipswich. It was always going to be tough against a team of their quality, but getting the game even played proved to be hard as on arrival there were several parts of the pitch that were underwater. Full credit to the ground staff who worked extremely hard to get the game played. We started the game with a plan to hold our shape and make it compact, hoping this would make it difficult for Ipswich to play through us. We executed this pretty well for periods of the 1st half, but the quality of the opposition told and it saw them net twice and go into half time with a 2-0 lead, although were it not for some great Grace Brooks saves it would have been more. I felt we were still in the game at half time but we knew we were in for a tougher second half as they had the advantage of playing with the wind. We certainly didn’t start the second half as well as the first and and our problems stemmed from the fact that we seemed to be inviting more pressure on ourselves. A goal on the hour sealed the win and then as the pitch started to really deteriorate the home side took full control as strikes on 62, 70 and 83 minutes made it 6-0 before scoring was rounded off in added time. The final score finished 7-0 to Ipswich which was tough to take especially as we started the game well. There were positives to take from the game and we’ll be working on those going into next week’s game against Leyton Orient. Stevenage FC v Walsall FC

SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION

LATEST NEWS WELCOME Good afternoon everyone and a special welcome to our good friends from the Midlands. Walsall resonates with me because of a player called Tommy Watson. Back in the early 1960’s when the ‘new town’ of Stevenage was still being constructed, 19 year old Tommy left his home in Lanark to come help build our town as a labourer. Playing for one of our local park teams, Tommy was ‘discovered’ and introduced to Stevenage Town manager George Curtis - who immediately signed him up.

regional meeting will be held Sunday March 1 at Champion Hill, the home of Dulwich Hamlet. Commencing at 12:00, agenda items to be discussed include election of officers (it’s our AGM) and club reports from all the attending members. You’re welcome to join me if you’d like to attend. Just let me know at Lloyd@ sfcsa.co.uk

CHRIS DAY No, not Chris the goal keeper, but Chris the ardent Boro fan who, like me, is researching the ancient history of senior football in Stevenage. Chris has designed and built a website which endeavours to account for every game, every player, every result and every league table since the reign of Queen Victoria. Both Chris and I have spent very many hours at the British Library researching, and the results of our efforts will slowly appear on the following site: www.stevenagefootballarchive.com/ The early data is still embryonic, but bear in mind there is a lot of input work to be done.

BORO BUS A couple of seasons later, Tommy was sold to Peterborough, and later on to Walsall. It was with the Bescot club where Tommy went on to play 106 games and score 22 goals for the Saddlers.

FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION (FSA) As the Stevenage delegate to the FSA, I should like to inform that our next Stevenage FC v Walsall FC

THE BASICS‌ The Saddlers are back in Sky Bet League Two after a disastrous campaign last season when they finished 22nd ending their 12-year stint away from the bottom division. Walsall fans can draw on successful, past experiences when last competing in League Two. Under the guidance of manager Richard Money, the team were able to capture their second fourth tier title in their history when they beat Hartlepool by one point after the final game of the 2006/07 season.

WES MCDONALD

LATEST FORM‌ Since the Saddlers last met Stevenage in a goalless draw in November, the team have had a mixture of results which started with just one defeat in seven games, that coming against Carlisle, which lifted them away from any potential relegation battle. But after four defeats in six games since the turn of year, the squad have conjured up a four-match unbeaten run in the league with two wins and two draws. Walsall have had home advantage in their last couple of games, conceding four goals in 32 | www.stevenagefc.com

JOSH GORDON

that time whilst still being able to come away with four points against Northampton (3-2) and Port Vale (2-2).

STAR MAN… Josh Gordon has played a leading role in the recent run of good form with three goals in his last four fixtures which has contributed to their unbeaten run. The 25-year-old has scored nine goals this season, beating last season’s goal tally of seven. The striker started his career at Stoke, before joining the youth set-up at Newcastle. After loan moves at Rhyl, Nantwich Town and Stafford Town he scored 11 goals in 18 matches and caught the eye of Leicester City. But having failed to break into the first team, Walsall came knocking at the start of last season to sign him permanently.

THE GAFFER…

DARRELL CLARKE

Darrell Clarke was appointed as manager in May this year following their relegation. The 41-year-old has a wealth of promotion experiences whilst at Salisbury and Bristol Rovers. In his job at Salisbury, Clarke was on hand to guide the club from the Southern Football League to the National League winning two Play-Off Finals in 2011 against Hednesford Town and Dover in 2013. He eventually moved to the Memorial Stadium as Assistant Manager the following season and was named manager halfway through the campaign but was not able to avoid relegation. Clarke was able to oversee back-to-back promotions to League One that included another play-off victory against Grimsby Town in the 2015 Conference Premier Play-Off Final. by Taylor Catton Stevenage FC v Walsall FC
