Tonight is all about progression to the next round and Wycombe will prove a strong test having started the season well and remain unbeaten. HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 24 AUGUST Based on our first three results on this day in history, you could make an educated score prediction for this Carabao Cup clash with the Chairboys. Once upon a time, Boro’ did nothing but win 2-1 on 24 August; posting three straight wins by the same scoreline on this date. It started with an early FA Cup encounter against Leamington in 1985 - and continued in 1991 and 1992 as we climbed up the Diadora League ladder. Even when we did go for a different scoreline, we simply doubled it when Morecambe came to visit us in 1996 when we were starting our Conference title defence. Barry Hayles scored twice that day as we put four past the Shrimps in an entertaining encounter. Sadly, it wasn’t a prelude to repeat title-winning success that season. Who knew that it’d be the last time for 25 years(!) that we’d play on this date in history on home territory? All five of the matches on 24 August that have followed, each one has been on the road. And all but a couple kept up a winning habit that we’d become accustomed to at Broadhall Way. It started with a 2-0 win at Sutton United in 1999 – a fourth win in four at the start of that campaign. Incidentally, that was the last time we paid a visit to Gander Green Lane – until later on this season. Moving on and we’ll skip neatly past a horrendous showing at Nuneaton Borough on this date in 2002; the only time we’ve lost on 24 August. That takes us onto 2007 and a two-goal win at Aggborough against a Kidderminster Harriers side we’d overcome to claim the FA Trophy just three months before. And then we have a 1-0 victory at Notts County in 2013 as James Dunne struck in injury time to secure the points in what would be a troubled season for us. The most recent outing on this date in

history came in 2019. If we thought the 2013-4 season was bad, then 2019-20 takes it to a whole new level. Still, a goalless draw at Mansfield Town is hardly the worst result we’d end up recording in the months that followed. It just wasn’t in keeping with the habit that we’d started back in 1985. So, Wycombe – a fifth home win out of five on this date? And what odds on the score being 2-1 come the final whistle? YOU AGAIN? WYCOMBE WANDERERS… One of our BBC 3 Counties stablemates, Wycombe Wanderers are a team against whom we’ve had a on-off type of relationship with. It all started in the 2010-1 season; Boro’ new to the Football League and the Chairboys long since graduates of non-league themselves. It started poorly for us, as we lost 2-0 at home in October 2010. But we didn’t dwell on it; overcoming Scott Laird’s red card in the reverse fixture to win

1-0 in March 2011. For a while, it seemed as if we did better on each other’s patch. After we rode their coattails to join them in League One, we again secured a one-goal away win, before having to settle for a point at the Lamex. Their time in the third tier, however, was cut short before ours – and that’s why it wasn’t until August 2014 that we’d meet again. It’s unsettling to think that it’s almost seven years to the day that we met them here in League Two. On 23 August 2014, Boro’ slumped to a 3-1 home defeat – despite taking the lead. We restored some degree of honour when we shared four goals in February 2015 (despite Chris Beardsley’s red card) – but it was the first time that we’d failed to pick up at least one win against them during a single season. Fortunately, our inability to win at home wouldn’t last. Going into the 2015-6 season, boss Teddy Sheringham needed something – anything – that’d cut him some slack. It came from a surprising source. Jesse Joronen, our onloan goalkeeper, scored a freak goal that took us some way to securing three points. And it delivered our first home win against the Chairboys too. The problem is that our decent away form against them was

surrendered; losing the next two games at their place by the same scoreline – 1-0. A 3-0 win in February 2017 is arguably the one occasion on which we well and truly got the better of our neighbours from Buckinghamshire. After that, we settled back down into a tit-for-tat exchange of close encounters. A 0-0 home draw and a 1-0 away defeat was our meagre return during the 2017-8 campaign as Wycombe secured promotion to League One – this time without us. And all that leaves us with our most recent encounter to date in October 2019. Our 1-0 win – there’s that scoreline again – gave Boro’ a slightly surprising, and perhaps fundamentally meaningless, victory in the Leasing.com Trophy across at Adams Park. With a head-to-head that swerves one way and then the next, who knows what lies in store when we come to this next chapter in our shared story. You can probably bet it’ll be pretty tight though.

ood Evening to Stevenage and Wycombe supporters, I hope your time at the Lamex for tonight’s fixture is an enjoyable one. In what has been a challenging and demanding 12 months within the EDP we can look back and reflect with a sense of pride and progress. We have seen a number of successes both in the classroom and on the pitch as we look forward to beginning another year of academic and football studies. We say goodbye to our second years who have excelled immensely through 2 lockdown periods. A number have left with Triple Distinction profiles and are now getting themselves ready for the next part of their journey at university. Others have secured jobs within various industries in sport and other sectors. It’s also great to see a number carry on their education with the club while undertaking the The HND (foundation degree) programme. We are also very proud of our Education Lead Mark Bentley who has been recognised for his fantastic work by being awarded the ‘VLUK Teacher of Year’. On the pitch we have made some fantastic strides with our students regularly attending Shep to train with the U18 scholars. It certainly lights the fuse of these young aspiring players to work hard and see the fruits of their labour being rewarded with sessions/games with Jorden Gibson and his group. We have seen players step up and enhance their development further in the men’s senior game; Reece Crowter (Ware) Corey Rodriguez (Canvey Island) Kade Bagge (Stotfold), Archie Sayer, Kyle Williams and Harry Clark (Arlesey Town), Morgan Dean (Eynesbury Rovers). Our first year cohort have also dipped their toes into the senior game with

Arley Barker (St Margretsbury), George Morrall (St Albans City), Matt Springett (Codicote), Joel Jeff & Matt Newman (Biggleswade United) However our proudest achievement has seen Timmy Smith awarded a professional contract with the club - Timmy has just finished his 2nd year with us and now embarks on life as a professional footballer. A real testament to Tim’s character and work ethic! Our domestic season was again cut short by covid, but our A team were sitting top of the EFL Community and Education South East 1. The B team in 3rd in the South East 2 and C team just below mid table in South East 3. Even though the league season was curtailed the National Cup competition continued. Our A team again showing the quality they possess by reaching the final at York City’s impressive new stadium back in June and narrowly missing out on silverware going down 3-2 to Macclesfield Town. Nevertheless, a fantastic achievement where clubs like Man City, Crystal Palace, Norwich City, Aston Villa among many others also competed. CHRIS WINTON – Education Development Program Lead

Can you tell us a bit about yourself? I’m 18 years old, I love football. I’ve been playing it from the age of 7, the love of the game grows every time I set foot onto the pitch! Can you tell us who your football idol or role model was whilst growing up? Growing up and watching football I never really had an idol, however, as I’ve got older, I really enjoy watching Lucy Bronze and the way she plays! She’s a very talented player and has had loads of success! How have you settled in so far at SFCW? I have settled into Stevenage Women well; everyone has made me feel so welcome from all the players to all the coaching staff. I feel really part of the team, it’s like being part of one big family! Very happy! You’ve represented England Colleges in a few games recently, how have you found this experience? I’ve recently just represented England Colleges, which has been a brilliant experience, playing with girls all over the country from

different colleges! We’ve played teams such as MK Dons’ first team and The RAF. Playing The RAF was a very good test and good experience as we were coming up against women that were older, very physical and fit. It was a good test and happily we came out with the win. What does it mean to you to represent England at colleges level? It means a lot to me to even be selected for the England Colleges team as it’s a great achievement. It means even more that I have started the games I have played with them, which means loads to me as it shows to me that the coaches have trust in me and believe in me as a player. This makes me feel more confident in myself. How proud a moment was it to receive your England cap? It was a very proud moment to receive my England cap, not only was it a proud moment for me it was a proud moment for my family and friends. Hopefully it’s just the start. What are our aims and goals for this season? This season I want to help the team climb up the table as I know this squad can do well! My personal goals for this season are to get as many minutes as I can under the belt and better myself as a player and fit in nicely into the senior side of women’s football. This is my first season in senior football and I want to do the best I can for this club!

ONE TO WATCH - Sam Vokes Striker Vokes joined the Chairboys last month and has featured in every game so far, netting the winner in the 1-0 victory over Lincoln.

Having come through the ranks at Bournemouth and appeared at Norwich and Burnley, he enjoyed great success at Burnley where he played for seven years, during that time also accruing a host of Welsh caps and helping the national side reach the semi final of Euro 2016, scoring the third in the 3-1 win over Belgium. He Joined Wycombe from Stoke where he stayed for two seasons.

After impressively reaching the Championship and giving their all in a battle for survival, Wycombe now find themselves in League One and among the sides looking to make a move back to the second tier. This season has started well for the Chairboys and they have won 4 and drawn one in five competitive starts. League wins over Accrington, Cheltenham and Lincoln see them

currently sit in second place in the table, just behind Sheffield Wednesday in top spot and ahead of Portsmouth in third, all three boasting 10 points. They reached this round of the cup in a similar fashion to Boro, edging past Exeter on a penalty shot out, although their clash was goalless after 90 minutes in Devon, the penalties eventually being won 4-3 after six rounds.

THE BOSS - Gareth Ainsworth After a playing career which has taken in all four tiers of the English game with Preston, Wimbledon and QPR, Ainsworth took the managerial hot seat at Adams Park via a player coach role in 2011. Having kept the Chairboys in the league in his first campaign on the final day of the season, he then showed the potential of the cub the following campaign with a play-off final appearance. Promotion for Wycombe finally came in 2017/18, as the Chairboys clinched League One football and a third-place finish with 84 points and the club then achieved their survival goal in their maiden season back in the third tier, finishing 17th. He would then go on to achieve the unimaginable, taking Wycombe Wanderers up to the Championship for the first time in their 133-year history, as due to COVID the League One season was voted overwhelmingly to end early, Wycombe, on points per game were

lifted to 3rd in the table and into the Play-Offs – with 1.74 the magic number. A 2-1 play off final win over Oxford saw them reach the second tier although this was to last just one season.

Brady began his career at Arsenal, making 235 appearances for the Gunners across seven seasons.
