CITIZEN EDINBURGH CITY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME 2023/24

v ANNAN ATHLETIC Saturday 28 October 2023 3.00pm

MANAGER MICHAEL McINDOE On October 9th we signed Michael McIndoe as our new manager following the departure of Alan Maybury. Michael, who is 43, was born in West Edinburgh, although it wasn’t until the very end of his playing career that he was with a Scottish club. A midfielder, he made almost 500 appearances in the Football League and scored 80 goals. He was capped twice for Scotland B. Michael signed for Luton Town’s youth section in 1996, making his first-team debut at the age of 18. After two years he moved on to Hereford United in the Conference, moving on to Yeovil Town for £25,000 following a bidding war. His time with Yeovil was very successful – he was appointed captain on a number of occasions, and Yeovil won the Conference in 2003 for the first time. In the vote for Nationwide Conference Player of the Year he received the votes of every single manager in the competition. A £50,000 transfer to Doncaster Rovers followed. He made 142 appearances for the Yorkshire club, scoring 35 goals and being selected for Scotland B. Rovers won the Third Division and Michael was voted PFA Player of the Year for the Division. In the 2005/06 League Cup Rovers beat Aston Villa and Machester City before going out on penalties to Arsenal in the semi-final – Michael scored in all of these games. After a loan spell at

Derby where he helped them avoid relegation, Michael moved to Barnsley for £125,000, to Wolves for £250,000, and Bristol City in 2007 for an undisclosed fee believed to be half a million. His final seasons as a professional were with Coventry City in 2009-2011, after which he retired. In 2018 he made a few appearances for Clydebank and Stirling Albion. Michael returned to football in 2022 he took over as manager of Gretna 2008, where he steered the seemingly doomed Raydale Parkers clear from relegation last season.

CHAIRMAN JOHN DICKSON Good afternoon everyone, and welcome to Meadowbank for today’s visit of Annan Athletic. We met Peter Murphy’s men at Galabank back in August, a match that typified much of our season to this point. We showed some fine forward play and got ourselves into a commanding position, but were ultimately undone by some bad luck and nervousness at the back. In saying that, the Galabankies had their tails up, and showed terrific intensity to storm back into the game and win it late on. I am sure they will be equally firedup ahead of today’s game. We will need to match that to get the result we are so desperate for. Since my last programme notes we have installed Michael McIndoe as our new manager. Michael and his team of Kirk Crichton and Liam Robertson have been exceptionally professional in all aspects of their approach, from training to match days. Michael has brought the intensity he demonstrated throughout his stellar career and it was terrific to see him get a positive result at Hamilton last Saturday. Today Michael, Kirk and Liam take their places in the Meadowbank dugout for the first time, and I hope you will all get right behind him and the team. We remain at the wrong end of the table, but Michael clearly has a plan and I will back him to the fullest extent as he sets about improving our League position. Away from the first team, I would like to acknowledge the work being done by Adam Cairnie and our under-20s, who have edinburghcityfc.com

WELCOME DERBYSHIRE CITIZENS

We welcome to Meadowbank this afternoon a stag group celebrating the nuptials of Jake Hampshire and his bride-to-be Lorna, who will be married in Sheffield on the 11th of next month. Organiser Matt Clements tells me that the group title is a deliberate deception - the whole party of eleven are almost

6

all Sheffield men (with the occasional Barnsleyite) and although 31-yearold mortgage advisor Jake lives in Dronfield, just south of the Steel City, and supports Sheffield United, he is in fact a Chesterfield man! (That’s in Derbyshire, if your English geography is a bit feeble.) The lads have mostly known one another since secondary school days, and in some cases since primary school - with one or two relatives or mates thrown in. If there are any members of the group who do not support either The Blades or The Owls, their names have been left in decent obscurity. Jake will be wearing Fat Lad #23 when he attempts the Crossbar Challenge at half-time (if reading this is the first he has heard about it, you’re doing the Crossbar Challenge at half-time, Jake.) Hope you all have a great weekend, folks, and all the best for the wedding and the future from all of us to Laura and Jake.

WELCOME TO MEADOWBANK

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, and welcome once more to Meadowbank Stadium for our crucial cinch League 1 fixture with Annan Athletic. As you will see from the League table on page 50, Annan Athletic and Edinburgh City are respectively in ninth and tenth positions. OK, so the season is not even one-third finished, but we in particular have to avoid being isolated at the foot of the table. Even if we win this afternoon we will still be bottom, but at least we will be closing the gap. If we can replicate last week’s performance at Hamilton over the next few matches, we will surely get enough points to move us out of the basement. edinburghcityfc.com

The most important news in this issue is the appointment of our new manager Michael McIndoe, with his team of assistant manager Kirk Crichton and goalkeeping coach Liam Robertson. Michael takes charge of the team for his first home game thus afternoon. The Citizen knew about our new gaffer before the Kelty Hearts programme went to press but held back the news, meaning I was scooped by Neil McGlade of the Evening News. Lord, it would be nice to break a story for once. We introduce Michael, Kirk and Liam on page 3 of today’s issue, and hope to feature a regular message from the gaffer from the Montrose programme onwards. ➤

NEWS AND COMMENT “This is the first time this season I’ve left a ground with a smile on my face,” remarked one of my colleagues as we exited the ZLX Stadium in Hamilton last weekend. Last season there were several occasions on which we left Meadowbank or a number of away grounds – Falkirk, Dunfermline, Montrose, Clyde, more than once at Airdrie and Kelty – where the performance and often the results were enough to give us a spring in our collective step as we headed back to car or bus. That’s been sadly lacking this season; but last weekend the team achieved a deserved draw against one of the two frontrunners for the title. A great boost after the disappointment against Kelty Hearts, and something we hope will continue today and in subsequent weeks. Incidentally, if Accies’ directors were dismayed about stumbling in their neckand-neck title struggle with Falkirk, they didn’t let it show after the game. Bad feeling behind the scenes is very rare at any level of the Pyramid, but the Accies directorate showed friendliness and sportsmanship of the highest class. Of course they, like we, realise that there is still more than two-thirds of the season to play. Sponsorship of all sorts - especially player and shirt - has suffered because of the circumstances of the change of ownership during the summer. Many companies had already worked out their sponsorship budgets for the year by the time it was announced that the club were not going to be folding during the close season; and although we were gratified at the increase in

8

season ticket sales, the take-up of shirt sponsorship by individiuals and companies has been a bit disappointing – not only because of the time of the year but some residual resentment regarding the F.C. Edinburgh era. Still plenty of time to get your player sponsorship or Foundation membership in, though.

We can announce new shirt sponsors, though - on the opposite page we welcome ABC Executive Coach Hire, who are our new front-of-shirt sponsors, and whose debut was at Hamilton last week. (No relation to our medical coverage, ABC Paramedic Services.) We also have new sleeve sponsors in Heritage Electrical. We’ll introduce both our new sponsors in more detail in upcoming issues. Finally, my apologies for publicising in last week’s programme a nonexistent City Cup semi-final with Bonnyrigg Rose. The fixture appeared on the East of Scotland F.A. website, but no-one at the E.S.F.A. thought of getting our agreement. We’ll let you know when an authorised date is confirmed. WELCOME ANNAN ATHLETIC

■ Our last meeting, in August: Callum Crane and Aidan Smith

The cinch League 1 season has rolled into the second quarter and we are hosting our old friends from Annan Athletic once more. It seems like only yesterday that we were promoted to the SPFL, although at my age the football seasons go past a bit more rapidly than all you young fifty-somethings. This will be the 26th time our sides have met since 2016, including a Scottish Cup tie and a couple of Play-Offs. Following the second leg of that particular Play-Off (Galabank, Friday 13th May 2022, 7:45 kick-off)(I think) we found ourselves on the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline - God knows what the score would have been if Brian Schwake hadn’t been in goal - but as we had a two-goal cushion

14

from the first leg (and Brian Schwake) there was no need for us to despair. Annan Athletic found League 2 a dismal place without Edinburgh City, and in the 2022/23 Play-off final decided to give Clyde a 5-2 aggregate smacking and come up to join us once more. Since joining the SPFL we have had a good record against the Galabankies – 14 wins to 9 – although we are happy to admit that some of these wins should have by rights gone to Athletic. We have won only three of our last eight encounters, though, and a win is something we both desperately need. Our sides occupy the bottom two places in cinch League 1. We have only taken one point at home this season, and Annan have secured a single point Edinburgh City v Annan Athletic | 28-10-2023

WELCOME ANNAN ATHLETIC away from home. They have, however, notched up two wins, both at Galabank - 3-0 against Stirling Albion on 16th September, and a 3-2 win over our good selves, on 26th August. That was a habit we had back in August – taking a lead and throwing it away. Although short of players we were two up after 33 minutes, with goals from Kieran Offord and Innes Murray. Dom Docherty pulled in back to 2-1 in 27 minutes, the same player made it two after some midfield comedy antics, and Tommy Goss got a free header three minutes from time to retain all the points at Galabank. About the only good point was a (second) Edinburgh City debut for Aidan McAdams.

Annan Athletic’s start to the season has been better than ours – but then again, so has everyone’s. League Cup defeats might have been expected against Kilmarnock, Dunfermline and Raith, although they could have done better than lose 3-1 at home to Albion Rovers. Following League defeats to Falkirk and Montrose they beat localish rivals Stranraer in the Challenge Cup, before losing to rather more local rivals Queen of the South. A two-match unbeaten spell saw them beat us at home and draw away at Kelty, but they exited the Challenge Cup to Peterhead. A win over Stirling and a draw to Alloa were followed by three defeats to full-time Hamilton, Cove and Queens, their most recent matches.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS We are no longer the new boys of the SPFL – four sides have joined since we were promoted in 2016 – and we are increasingly likely to be opposing teams we first met in our non-League days. We have met Annan Athletic on 62 previous occasions since November 1987, but only 25 times since we joined the SPFL; the other encounters have been in the East of Scotland League between 1987 and Athletic’s elevation to the SFL in 2008. And now Spartans are in the SPFL, and we must have played them at least 60 times in the East of Scotland and Lowland Leagues; more still if we count the meetings between 1966 and 1986 between Spartans and the side eventually

16

absorbed into the Social Club as our new football section, Postal United. But I’ll tot up those stats when I need to. Annan Athletic joined the East of Scotland League in 1987 because the South of Scotland League wasn’t a challenge any more; as a First Division team they took four points out of six from Premier Division us in the 87/88 League Cup and went on to become one of our bogey teams, winning the Premier title four times before being elected to the Scottish League in 2008 in place of neighbours Gretna. The Black and Gold were our superiors in non-League days, 18 wins to 10, but in the SPFL the balance is City 14 wins to 9 - but Annan have won the last two games.

SUPPORTERS @ClubCitizens

LATEST CSC PODCAST On 5th October the Citizens Supporters’ Club released Episode 22 of the CSC Podcast, the very unofficial voice of our support, starring the Reverend Boaby Love, Citizen Neal and the returned Mr Moncs. The team discuss Alan Maybury’s departure, give him the credit he is due and consider all the circumstances. The current performance of the squad is evaluated, and the Development and Women’s teams reviewed. There are good words to say about the Alloa

delicacy “pie on a roll”, and Boab has some very cogent things to say about admission prices. A great listen. The CSC Podcast can be found on Spotify, Apple and other hosting sites – you can get links from CSC Twitter, @ClubCitizens. AWAY DAY FALKIRK Our drawing with Hamilton Accies last week meant that, at the time of writing, Falkirk are two points clear at the top of the table; although who knows what will happen over the next fortnight? The Bairns beat us fairly easily back in September, although neither of our sides will forget that the last time we visited The Falkirk Stadium the three points went back along the M9 with us. HOW TO GET THERE - ROAD Satnav - Stadium Way, Grangemouth, postcode FK2 9EE. Distance is about 29 miles. M9 to junction 5, then follow the A9 (first exit from the roundabout) to the ground. The Stadium is visible on your right after you pass the fire station. Parking at the ground is permit only - use Forth Valley College on Grangemouth Road, or West Mains Industrial Estate. Stewards will give directions. HOW TO GET THERE - RAIL Four trains an hour from Edinburgh

20

Waverley to Falkirk Grahamston. Journey takes 50 minutes and the cheapest day return is £11.50. The ground is a 30 minute walk from the town centre. From Falkirk Bus Station in Newmarket Street, buses 2, 3 and 4 go to Stadium Road End. HOW TO GET THERE - BUS McGills service X38 runs twice an hour between Edinburgh (Regent Road) and Upper Newmarket Street. The journey takes about 90 minutes. From Falkirk, services 2, 3 and 4 go to the ground. THE GROUND The last time we were at Falkirk Stadium our supporters were in the stand behind the goal (to the left of the main stand), although with our numbers they may just put us in the main stand - more details in the Montrose programme, if required. The prices are usually adults £21, concessions £16, under-18s £11, under-12s free.

COMMENT GUEST WRITER MIKE SMITH There is something of a paradox in Scottish football these days. In fact, not just Scottish football but football in general. There are numerous clubs in the UK whose shirts are emblazoned by the name of a betting company of some kind of another. In the cinch Premiership, Celtic and Rangers currently promote betting companies on their shirts and, in Scotland, there are seemingly no plans to stop this, despite the Premier League in England banning the names of gambling companies on the front of team shirts from season 2026/27.

Wellbeing organisations and charities have been concerned for some time about the effects of gambling addiction on the young (and not so young), and the fact that it is now easier than ever before to place a bet on just about anything you can think on. The internet has seen a huge increase in online betting through various apps. Most of the betting companies who run these apps not only make it far easier edinburghcityfc.com

OfficialFCEdinburgh

than it should be to gamble on your smartphone but actively encourage you to do so by bombarding you with email messages on a daily basis. It makes for a reasonable argument to suggest that promoting these companies on football shirts encourages impressionable young adults to gamble.

Some football clubs have started to move away from taking the “gold” on offer from said betting companies. This is to their credit, and it seems any form of gambling is now persona non grata at an increasing number of football clubs around the country. It doesn’t seem that long ago that you could use betting facilities at Tynecastle and Easter Road, for example. The hut in the Wheatfield Stand at Tynecastle which was a mini betting shop (not illustrated) has been closed for some time now, but it used to be a hive of activity on match days. And it’s not just the betting shop which has disappeared from Tynie. For years, ➤ @EdinburghCityFC

COMMENT GUEST WRITER MIKE SMITH I was accustomed to parting with my hard-earned cash to the auld fella at the turnstile (sound familiar, Citizens?) before having my ears subjected to “get yer half-time draw tickets!” being bellowed from a person or persons armed with a fifty-fifty draw ticket. For a mere pound you had the chance of winning an untold fortune (well, enough to get a few rounds in at The Diggers after the game) I recall visiting Firs Park, home of East Stirlingshire a few years ago, at a time when the Shire were still in the Scottish Football League (albeit perennial strugglers in the bottom division). I was so impressed by a fella doing his fiftyfifty half-time draw ticket sales pitch – “this could change your life forever” – that I parted with a pound and stuffed my part of the ticket in my pocket. It was only upon leaving the ground at the end of the game that I saw the winning number nailed to a hut by the exit gate. It was my number. I duly collected £125 and felt a tad guilty that I was taking money from a club for which every penny was precious. Although not guilty enough to give them it back… (you do surprise me – Ed) Along the road from Firs Park, was Brockville Park, former home of Falkirk F.C. I remember my father taking me there in the late 1960s/early 1970s and buying a “goalden goal” ticket (do you see what they did there?) For the price of a shilling (for those under the age of 50 look it up on Google) you got a perforated piece of paper which, upon opening, contained any time between 0 minutes and 90 minutes. The idea was if your ticket had the time of the first goal of the game you won a cash prize. I still

30

recall my father throwing away one of his tickets in disgust after it revealed ‘0 mins, 14 seconds’… In fact, the terracing at Brockville Park always seemed to be festooned with discarded “goalden goal” tickets.

Nowadays, with the internet giving instant access to the world on one’s smartphone – and the world of online gambling – there isn’t quite the same anticipation with buying a half-time draw ticket or the much missed “goalden goal” ticket. I like a bet as much as the next person (no kidding – Ed) but I do appreciate the dangers of addiction which can lead to serious consequences. But I do ponder if the fact that Celtic and Rangers have a gambling company as their shirt sponsors will really influence wee Johnny sitting at either Celtic Park or Ibrox to bet his life away at an online bookmaker. In life, people really have to take responsibility for their own actions. But do they? Don’t bet on it…

MATCH REPORT

ALLOA ATHLETIC 1 EDINBURGH CITY 1 Cinch LEAGUE 1. Pictures by David Glencross (AAFC)

Alloa, 16 September 2023 – An away match at the Indodrill Stadium and a second consecutive draw. We are still at the foot of the table, but both the result and the performance against one of the best part-time sides in the country were encouraging. Sadly, this game was to be the last for which gaffer Alan Maybury would be in charge. Following his injury Innes Murray was unavailable, and was replaced in midfield by Robbie Leitch; otherwise the line-up was the same as that which had performed so well against Cove Rangers. The Alloa line-up included Taylor Steven, son of former City gaffer Shaun Steven. On a dull and blustery afternoon City lost the toss and Robbie Leitch kicked off towards the Clackmannan Road end. The visitors had an early chance when Shanley darted in to meet a good cross by MacDonald, but his right-foot flick was edinburghcityfc.com

just off target. In six minutes Shanley’s turn-and-shoot from outside the box forced Ogayi into making the first save of the match. The ball flashed from end to end, with both sides having good chances in an entertaining first half. In 12 minutes Alloa’s Roy shot over from the corner of the six-yard box, and a minute later City were claiming that McLean was held as he tried to collect a loose ball after a Shanley shot. In 18 minutes Spence put a lovely cross into the box but McLean couldn’t turn it in. Back to the other end, and a rocket shot from Buchanan in 29 minutes hit the woodwork and bounced away. City came close again in 34 following a Handling free-kick, Shanley missing by inches; Alloa also had a great chance with a Taggart shot in 37 minutes, but McAdams reacted instantly to slap the ➤

ball to safety. Five minutes before the break a Shanley header practically scraped the top of the crossbar, and just on the whistle Taggart, in a great position for the home side, shot just wide. The Wasps took the initiative at the start of the second period and City were being pressed hard. In 49 minutes Debayo found Ally Roy with a cross and his header looked netbound until Aidan McAdams conjured an astounding reaction save, while the keeper also stopped attempts from Taylor Steven in the 56th and 59 minutes. But the first goal of the game was scored at the other end of the park. Steven was caught in possession by Spence who tapped forward to Robbie Leitch on the 18-yard line. Leitch evaded Roberts’s

32

tackle and his beautifully-placed shot, beyond Ogayi’s reach, glanced off the left-hand goalpost and into the net – his first goal for City. Offord had a shot touched over a few moments later, but the next goal went to the home side. Enjoying an extended spell of possession Athletic pushed City back and back, and in the 68th minute Steven and Debayo created a crossing opportunity for Devenney on the left. His diagonal ball, goalside about eight yards out, was headed on by debutant Wasp Ally Roy, just inside the right-hand post, Aidan McAdams diving but not getting within a yard of it. In 72 minutes the gaffer made a triple substitution, not something that’s often seen at City, and the final moments of

Shanley supplied Spence, and again the attempt was just off target. At the other end Sammon was unable to force home an Alloa winner from short range, and in 90+4 Ogayi tipped Mercer’s free-kick over the crossbar. The Wasps keeper got to the kick but dropped the ball, but recovered instantly to hold just as MacDonald shot from close range.

the match developed into a dingdong battle. 73 minutes, and Stevens’s shot beat McAdams but Lee Hamilton was there to clear off the line. Donnelly and Sammon came close for the home side, before Offord sprinted out of defence and his shot was only inches wide of the post. Shanley was tormenting the Alloa defence and in 88 minutes he laid off the ball to Spence but the shot was wide. A minute later Alloa Possession

SNIPPETS THE RAMBLING REPORTER Welcome to the English non-League pages where we’ve been focussing on all the clubs with silly names and stuff like that in the FA Cup qualifying rounds. Well, the qualifiers have come to an end now, and the remaining non-League clubs have been joined in the draw by the Leagues One and Two sides. There’s a fair few non-League clubs left in for me to look at, though. My personal favourite name of the clubs left is Cray Valley Paper Mills, who have been drawn to play away at Charlton Athletic (live on BBC2. Sunday 5th November). A big ask. But as I recently covered them I must look elsewhere for inspiration. The lowestranked team is Alvechurch, so let’s start there!

ALVECHURCH F.C. are from Worcestershire, alluded to by the three pears on their badge taken from the county flag. Alvechurch is essentially a large village/small town of approximately 5,500 people, lying about 11 miles south of Birmingham. The football club, who play at Lye Meadow which they bought for £1000 in 1957, folded in 1993 but the supporters brought the club back the following year. Lye edinburghcityfc.com

OfficialFCEdinburgh

Meadow has a capacity of 3,000 but the record attendance was for a match against Enfield in 1964-5 season. 13,500 was the official attendance! Alvechurch play in yellow shirts with red trim, black shorts and socks in the Southern League Premier Division Central which, I believe, is level 7 of the English football Pyramid. STOP PRESS: - The researcher for this piece (i.e. me) obviously read an old article on the F.A. website because Alvechurch have been eliminated from the Cup! Sorry, but at least you know a little bit about Alvechurch now!

Equally low down the Pyramid lie RAMSGATE F.C. Founded in 1886, this Kent side play their football at Southwood Stadium, a 2,500 capacity ground in a town of just over 40,000 Ramsgatonians. Plenty room for all, here! Playing in red shirts with white trim, white shorts and red socks, although this year’s jerseys appear to have been attacked by someone with white paint on a roller, Ramsgate have a home draw in Round One of the F.A. Cup against either Hemel Hempstead or Woking, so let’s have a quick look at them.

SNIPPETS THE RAMBLING REPORTER

HEMEL HEMPSTEAD TOWN F.C. are known as The Tudors and have a very long and chequered history. You can check out their informative website for more information, but they’ve been in existence since 1885 in one form or another finally becoming the Hemel their supporters know and love in 1972, and have played at their Vauxhall Road ground since then. They play at the giddy heights (well, giddy heights for this column anyway) of the National League South in an all-red strip. The New Town of Hemel Hempstead is famous for its “Magic Roundabout”, where its almost 100,000 residents can get suitably confused by being able to turn right at a roundabout. You really need to experience it to get the full experience! And finally, a look at WOKING F.C. I like Woking. It has a good selection of decent pubs, and mad seagulls who try to steal your fags instead of fish and

36

chips! Well, they did mine, anyway! Woking play even higher up the Pyramid in the National League, from where they could get into the English Football League proper if they can do better than their 13th place finish last term. They wear red and white halved jerseys, black shorts and white socks, and play at the Laithwaite Community Stadium. Their nickname of the Cardinals in nowadays shortened to the Cards. A tough ask for Ramsgate, whoever they play.

That’s it, folks. Cheers for now. Enjoy the game and safe journey home.

MATCH REPORT

EDINBURGH CITY 1 KELTY HEARTS 4 Cinch League 1. Pictures by Tommy Lee Photography

Edinburgh, 7 October 2023 – Back down to earth with a bump. We should have beaten Cove a couple of weeks before, and might just have snatched a win at Alloa the previous week, although we would hardly have deserved it. But this game ... a downer from beginning to end. It was an interregnum game, with Alan Maybury having left during the week and Michael McIndoe’s appointment not yet announced. Mark Kerr and Adam Cairnie took the team, and had to work around some quite severe problems of availability – Innes Murray and Calum Crane were injured, Liam Fontaine and Russell McLean were in the squad but did not come off the bench, and a number of others played although not fully fit. There were several other circumstances which worked against this being a truly enjoyable way to spend a Saturday afternoon. The weather was utterly vile,

40

cold, windy and with constant teeming rain. The Hearts-Hibs match was on at Tynecastle while in the Rugby World Cup Scotland would face Ireland in Paris later that afternoon. All right, we don’t tend to lose many supporters to televised rugby, but “walk-ups” are a significant part of our gate; and although our results had shown an upturn, people who weren’t hardcore City looked out of the window and decided to stay in the dry and warm. Thank God for two hospitality groups and a sizeable travelling support from Kelty, or the match attendance would have been even more embarrassing than it was. City won the toss and decided to shoot with the wind towards the Portobello end. Kelty attacked immediately, earning a corner in the first minute, and from this McAdams had to be alert to hold on to a short-range header by Johnston. At another corner, in 5 minutes, McAdams Edinburgh City v Annan Athletic | 28-10-2023

MATCH REPORT

punched the ball into his own net but the referee was well placed to see the foul on the City keeper. City’s first attack came in eight minutes when some smart passing set Handling up for a shot from outside the box, but Gourlay saved comfortably. By now City were giving as good as they got, but neither strikeforce troubled the keepers much – not until the 25th minute, when the visitors opened the scoring with a well-taken goal from Tiwi Daramola. Walker chipped a short ball into space at the corner of the box and Daramola reacted first, sprinting into the box and shrugging off a challenge from MacDonald to slide the ball under McAdams. The visitors doubled their lead in 32

minutes. Moore’s shot was headed out on the six-yard line by Jacobs, and from the resultant corner to the back post Adam Corbett’s angled header was too fast for McAdams, while Jacobs’s attempt to block on the line was unsuccessful this time. City had practically faded away as an attacking force by this time, and bar a couple of abortive attacks the traffic was towards Aidan’s goal. Four corners, a superb save, three shots off target and a couple of balls across the goalmouth, but thankfully no goals, filled up the time to the interval. City were more active at the start of the second half but didn’t trouble Gourlay over-much, and Kelty Hearts extended their lead in the 68th minute. The visitors

surged out of defence down the left wing, and City were unable to clear their lines. Corbett chipped the ball into the six-yard box but Bavidge couldn’t make contact, Ewen blocked Johnston’s shot and the ball rolled loose, whereupon Alfie Bavidge prodded home from a yard out. Video seems to bear out the City players’ protest that Bavidge was in an offside position when Johnston shot. Offord and Handling had shots saved, Edinburgh City

but Kelty made it four in 76 minutes, Ross Cunningham getting the ball on the centre line and running unchallenged down the right wing to put the ball through McAdams’s legs. Jack Wilkie got a consolation goal two minutes from time, his first for the club, neatly volleying home a cross from Mahon.

CITY UNDER-20s

Both our SPFL side and our Women’s team are going through lean spells at the moment, but that isn’t the case with the Deveopment side. On 6th October the 20s recorded an important win over East Kilbride, 3-2 at home, and a week after that came away from bottom-placed Cumbernauld Colts with a 2-1 win. The three points were more important than the goals – on the same evening Spartans lost 2-3 at home to Stirling University, meaning City leapfrogged the Ainslie Park side to go top of the SLDFL for the first time this season, with a game in hand. Last week the youngsters were due to play Vale of Leven away in the Challenge Cup, but Storm Babet put paid to that. We don’t yet have the score for last night’s SLDFL home match with Stirling. That game in hand could be crucial. We edinburghcityfc.com

OfficialFCEdinburgh

top the SLDFL at present but are barely ahead of Spartans and East Kilbride – in fact, if Kilby hadn’t had three points deducted for an ineligible player they would be in pole position. The Development side supplied the players for the recent Challenge Cup match with East Kilbride’s senior side, and some supporters described this as “Alan Maybury throwing the twenties under a bus.” Adam Cairnie (below) disagreed, calling the experience 100% worthwhile, and insisting the squad learned lots of lessons – and results appear to bear that out. Expanding the set-up is always in our minds, as some of the squad are reaching the end of their time in under-20s football; and at some point in the future a ‘B’ team, possibly in the East of Scotland League, may be formed.

MEET THE REFEREE STEVEN KIRKLAND Once more we extend a warm welcome to Meadowbank to this afternoon’s match referee, Steven Kirkland of the Ayrshire Referees’ Association – a Category 1 referee since 2014. We first met Steven even before then: he was the man in the middle in our 2012 Scottish Cup-ties with Shotts Bon Accord. At that time he was on the Category 2 (Development) list and was thus too senior for East of Scotland League matches, and we didn’t encounter him again until we joined the SPFL in 2016. Today will be the fourteenth time he has refereed one of our matches, and the first time this season. Steven will be assisted by Calum Doyle, a Specialist Assistant Referee from the Edinburgh & District Association, and Clyde Buchan, a category 3 official from Moray & Banff.
