A WELCOME FROM

EDDIE HEARN

W

elcome to a blockbuster night of boxing. I’m very proud to be able to get this massive show over the line. This was an event that was supposed to happen in May in front of 17,000 people at The O2 Arena, but we have built something very special at The SSE Arena, Wembley where we will remain for the next six weeks for four huge nights, starting with Oleksandr Usyk’s crucial Heavyweight clash with Derek Chisora. It’s an absolute firecracker and a fight that’s so important to the Heavyweight division over the next few months. We saw a stunning victory from Povetkin recently to shake up the mandatory situation, can ‘WAR’ Chisora spring the upset and KO the undefeated former Undisputed World Champ? I know he will do everything he can to try and get the victory and this will be another night of Heavyweight drama! Lee Selby dreams of becoming Wales’ first ever two-weight World Champion, and he finds himself two fights away from achieving that goal. Tonight, he faces the supremely confident Aussie George Kambosos Jr for a shot at the IBF Lightweight World Title held by Teofimo Lopez following his brilliant win over Vasiliy Lomachenko.

Women’s boxing has never been stronger, with Ellie Scotney showcasing her talent last time out in Peterborough, and now we can look forward to three fantastic fights on tonight’s bill; an all-British battle between Savannah Marshall and Hannah Rankin with the WBO Middleweight World Title belt at stake, Amy Timlin and Carly Skelly meet for the Commonwealth SuperBantamweight Title and Ramla Ali begins her journey in the pro ranks against Eva Hubmeyer. Belfast’s Tommy McCarthy has turned his career around after his loss to Richard Riakporhe, earning a great win against Fabio Turchi in Italy last time out. A shot at the European Title was his reward for that win, but it won’t be easy against Belgium’s Bilal Laggoune. A victory here in London could put McCarthy in line for a World Title shot. Glasgow Bantamweight talent Kash Farooq is a fighter that I’m very excited about. He signed with us back in December 2019 and finally makes his debut with Matchroom against experienced Mexican Martin Tecuapetla, with one eye on a rematch with Scottish rival Lee McGregor. ■

krainian pound-for-pound star Oleksandr Usyk finally faces British favourite Derek Chisora in his first real Heavyweight test this evening, live on Sky Sports Box Office in the UK and on DAZN in all of its nine markets including the U.S. Usyk (17-0, 13 KOs) made the move to Heavyweight after dominating at Cruiserweight, ending his extraordinary spell at 200lbs as the Undisputed king with a phenomenal run of victories in his opponents’ backyard against Marco Huck, Mairis Briedis, Murat Gassiev and Tony Bellew. The 2012 Olympic Gold medallist began his assault on the Heavyweight division

by retiring Chazz Witherspoon in seven rounds at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago last October and continues his bid to become a two-weight World Champion when he faces an in-form Chisora (329, 23 KOs). “I have really missed boxing,” said Usyk. “I have worked hard in my training camp to show a spectacular performance on October 31. I expect a real test in Derek - he is strong, tough and resilient. He is a really big guy and he hits hard. “As a Cruiserweight, I reached the highest heights as Undisputed Champion and now I am following the same path as a Heavyweight. I need to test myself against world class Heavyweights on my new road to Undisputed and Derek stands in front of me. “Many people say that Derek is a monster, but deep down he is a kind man. I don’t expect to see that good side of him. I know that he wants to break me, but I am water, wind and fire all together. There will be no war. I bring peace - pure, clean boxing. “I don’t know why everyone is talking about a test at Heavyweight because, all of my life, I have been tested by Heavyweights. In the World Series of Boxing I was a Heavyweight - people wanted to hurt me but didn’t manage to. If the king of animals would be considered according to the size, then it would be elephant, not the lion. An elephant is a friend of the mouse!” ■

erek Chisora says Oleksandr Usyk is in store for the “fright of his life” when they collide in a huge Heavyweight Halloween blockbuster at The SSE Arena, Wembley tonight, live on Sky Sports Box Office in the UK and on DAZN in the U.S. ‘WAR’ Chisora (32-9, 23 KOs) intends on giving Usyk nightmares in his second fight up at Heavyweight, and the Finchley powerhouse heads into this WBO Intercontinental Title clash in terrifying form having scored big knockout wins over Artur Szpilka and

David Price at The O2 in 2019. “On October 31st, Oleksandr Usyk is going to get the fright of his life,” said Chisora. “He wants to claim he is at the top of the food chain, but if he wants to do that, he needs to box a true Heavyweight. It’s a fight, the guy is going to chuck the kitchen sink at me. I’m just going to bite down on the gum shield and let god take over. I am coming for war! “The fight sells itself; he is a good fighter and is loved by the English fans. Even people who don’t like boxing love watching him and he’s fighting myself. There is nothing bad about this fight, there’s not hatred, it’s all about the love for the sport. “He’s not scary, it’s a fight. He’s a man and I’m a man. The worst thing that can happen is you get knocked out. I will make sure that when Usyk gets out that ring he knows he has been in a fight. Seek and destroy, no mercy! That’s what we’re aiming for.” ■

ee Selby can take a step closer to becoming Wales’ first ever two-weight World Champion when he takes on George Kambosos Jr in a Final Eliminator for the IBF Lightweight World Title. Former IBF Featherweight World Champion Selby (28-2, 9 KOs) made the move up to Lightweight after losing his title to Josh Warrington at Elland Road back in May 2018, and the 33-year-old from Barry has won two in a row at 135lbs, most recently beating Ricky Burns over 12 rounds last October. Next up for ‘Lightning’ is a scheduled 12-rounder against Australia’s unbeaten contender ‘Ferocious’ Kambosos Jr, who had previously promised to retire Selby in front of his home crowd when they were due to meet at the Motorpoint Arena Cardiff back in May. “On social media he comes across quite outspoken and arrogant,” said Selby. “He’s saying he’s going to do this and do that. To look at him, he looks

“I’LL WRITE MY NAME INTO THE HISTORY BOOKS” like a very good fighter. He’s got fast hands; he looks like he can punch. He can box a bit as well; he brings a lot of pressure. He’s young, hungry and ambitious. “When we did an E-Press Conference earlier in the year he told me that every time he hit me in sparring, he rocked me to my boots. That in itself just gave me extra confidence, knowing that he’s making up tales about sparring.” A number of Welshman have had the opportunity to become two-weight World Champions, including Caerphilly’s

Robbie Regan and Newport’s Gavin Rees, but Selby is promising to go one better than his countrymen by dethroning Teofimo Lopez when he gets the chance. “If I come through this fight then I’ll be in another massive World Title fight,” added Selby. “Teofimo Lopez is within touching distance and a dream is close to becoming a reality for me. It will be life-changing for me if I can get through this fight. “I’ll become the first Welshman to become a two-weight World Champion. All I have to do is win two fights. Two fights and I’ve written my name into the history books. It would not only be massive for Welsh boxing, but British boxing too. You can’t put a price tag on that. My fans are going to see a Lee Selby win, by any means possible, whether the stoppage comes or it’s a 12-round decision – you’ll see a Lee Selby win” ■

eorge Kambosos Jr says he has been training ‘like a man possessed’ ahead of his crucial IBF Lightweight World Title Final Eliminator showdown with Lee Selby. ‘Ferocious’ heads into tonight’s chiefsupport bout with an unblemished 18-0 (10 KOs) record, last seen outscoring former IBF ruler Mickey Bey on two of the judges’ scorecards at Madison Square Garden in New York. The 27-year-old Australian plans on making a huge statement in his first fight in the UK and certainly hasn’t been short of confidence ever since the clash with Selby was first announced for May in Cardiff before the sporting world

was brought to a halt by the COVID-19 pandemic. “I’ve got to prove to everyone what I’m about, I want the world to know,” said Kambosos Jr. “I fought a former World Champion in my last fight, and I am straight away back in with another former World Champion, then I’m coming for Lopez. I’m hungry and ambitious, he’s had his time, it’s my time now. “Out with the old and in with the new, this is a young man’s sport. The young hungry lion is here. It’s not only the freshness, it’s everything that I’m bringing. The footwork, the power, the speed and the ferociousness are all going to trouble Lee. Despite their differing opinions on who won the rounds they shared in sparring at the famous Wildcard Boxing Gym in California, Sydney’s Kambosos Jr says it’s in the past now and all that matters is winning this weekend. “He knows what happened in the sparring, it was three years ago. This is 12 rounds! I had so many Welsh fans messaging me, so I’m disappointed that no one will be in there to witness the statement I’m going to make. As long as it’s me and him in the ring that’s all that matters. There are no ifs or buts, this is it, I’m a savage right now. “I had the boy running all over the gym, he was just trying to use his little jab. Every time I touched him; he was shaking in his boots. I got the upper hand back then, so he needs to understand what I am going to do him now. I’ve left no stone unturned in this camp. Enjoy these next couple of days Lee, you will retire after this fight!” ■

SILENT

S

avannah Marshall is trying not to weigh herself down with thoughts of the enormity of tonight’s World Title challenge. Marshall can make history in London if she can beat fellow Brit Hannah Rankin for the vacant WBO Middleweight belt. The 29-year-old, with eight wins from eight professional appearances, will start as the slight favourite at The SSE Arena, Wembley. Not only is it the only World Championship contest on the Sky Sports Box Office event, the ‘Silent Assassin’ can record a notable achievement. Victory would make her the first Briton to follow World Championship gold in the amateur game by winning a World professional Title … in the ring at least. Marshall’s friend and former Team GB colleague, Nicola Adams, did get her hands on the WBO Flyweight belt, but the Strictly star was awarded it as opposed to winning it inside the ropes. While the Peter Fury-trained star admits victory over the 30-year-old would be a “dream come true”, her focus is on beating her arch-rival rather than

“WE WANT SATURDAY TO BE MORE ABOUT SHOWING WHO I AM AND HOW I CAN PERFORM” thinking about what is on the line. “Me and Peter have been talking about this,” said Marshall. “Peter doesn’t think having the world on my shoulders is a good thing. We want Saturday to be more about showing who I am and how I can perform. “Yes, it’s a huge show and who wouldn’t want to fight on the Usyk-Chisora bill? But I’m just excited about getting the opportunity to box. After lockdown ended and the shows returned, I’ve had to sit and watch every female boxer there is get to fight, every one except me! “It’s a very good fight too against Hannah and one I can’t wait for. It is a fascinating affair which will be shown live on Sky Sports Box Office.” While Marshall has a cupboard full of medals from her time on the amateur scene, her opponent has a professional record of greater depth. The Londonbased Scot has won nine of her 13 bouts, with three of her four defeats coming in title contests, each against top opposition and all overseas. Unlike Savannah, who has not boxed for 12 months, Hannah got in a fight prelockdown, stopping Hungary’s Eva Bajic in three rounds in Paisley at the end of February. ■

here is no love lost between Savannah Marshall and Hannah Rankin, which is just as well because the fists are about to fly. Marshall and Rankin’s battle of Britain is more than a spat between two rivals, it’s a shoot-out in Wembley for the vacant WBO World Middleweight Title. The 29 and 30-year-olds clash on the undercard of one of the biggest Heavyweight cards of the year where ex-undisputed World Cruiserweight king Oleksandr Usyk puts his unbeaten record on the line against Britain’s Derek Chisora. Eddie Hearn has assembled quite a show, but Marshall vs. Rankin looks a beauty, as the English girl with medal

after medal on the amateur scene meets the battle-hardened Scot who has been in the trenches four times in World Title scraps. “It’s a perfect match-up,” said Rankin, who is confident of ending the unbeaten record of her opponent she has already indulged in some social media jabs with. “It’s been on the cards for some time and I think people are genuinely excited by a proper 50-50 fight.” Rankin believes the contest will eclipse the terrific tussle between new-kid-on-the-block Terri Harper and Marshall’s old Olympic teammate Natasha Jonas for the WBC

USYK VS CHISORA

“I THINK ME AND SAV WILL BE A REAL BARNSTORMER” and IBO world Super-Featherweight belts in August. “This is the first big fight at one of the higher weights in the UK, I don’t think there’s been a World Championship bout above Super-Lightweight before,” said the Glasgow star. “There’s not been anything like this before, we’ve been on a collision course for a while, we can both bang and there are a lot of things that can happen in this fight. I’ve been buzzing for this and think boxing fans are excited too. “I think me and Sav will be a real barnstormer and people know that and that’s why there was such a sense of anticipation.” It is a confrontation which has split some opinion. Marshall has won pretty much everything as an amateur, but her only 10-rounder as a professional was a one-sided points success over Yanina Orozco for the World Boxing Association’s Inter-Continental SuperMiddleweight Title. Rankin, on the other hand, has already had four World Title bouts and while she’s won only one, the others have gone the distance and has never been stopped. ■

he incredible story of Ramla Ali continues tonight as she begins her professional boxing journey. Ali’s family fled war-torn Somalia as refugees after her brother had already been tragically killed, and despite initially keeping her boxing a secret from her family, Ramla is now signed with both Matchroom and unified Heavyweight World Champion Anthony Joshua’s 258 management label.

21

“I WANT TO BE IN BIG FIGHTS AND BECOME A WORLD CHAMPION” In competing with Somalia as an amateur, Ali became the first boxer, male or female, to win an African Title for them and had set her sights on heading to Tokyo 2020 before the games were cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Trained by her husband and trainer Richard Moore, Ali hopes that fight fans will be entertained by her style as she looks to hit the ground running in the paid ranks.

22

OCTOBER 31 2020

“I’m really looking forward to making my debut,” said Ali. “There was a possibility of me turning pro in 2017 when I felt there was nothing left for me to do, but I wanted the experience of going abroad and fighting the best in the world. I wanted all those tough amateur fights to prepare me for this night. “There are no head guards, you’re wearing 8oz gloves! I have learned how it feels to be in the trenches and grit your teeth during a fight. I’m ready for the challenges that are ahead of me. “I want to be in big fights, and I want to be a World Champion. The pro ranks are different from the amateurs, now you’re here to hurt people. I hope in becoming a World Champion, people will also have a better view of Somalia.” ■

ommy McCarthy believes that winning the EBU European Cruiserweight Title against Bilal Laggoune will put him in line for a dream World Title shot. The Belfast man (16-2, 8 KOs) edged past Italy’s Fabio Turchi last October to land the WBC International Cruiserweight Title on away soil and believes his European Title shot against Belgium’s Laggoune has come at the perfect time. “I’ve been training for a long time and I’ve had a great camp,” said McCarthy. “We’ve had good notice for this fight. I feel like he’s made for me. To win this belt will open even more doors for me. The WBC Title opened doors; this will put me in the rankings with all of the governing bodies. Anyone who has come before me and won the EBU Title has usually gone on to fight for a World Title after. I’m looking at this as a World Title eliminator.

“I’M LOOKING AT THIS AS A WORLD TITLE ELIMINATOR” “This will probably be the biggest show of the year. It’s live on pay-per-view and topped by two massive names in Oleksandr Uyk and Derek Chisora. For me the plan is to shine on this show, all eyes will be on me. It will boost my profile and I could become a household name within boxing. It will catapult me to stardom.” McCarthy’s career took a huge blow in March 2019 when he was stopped in four rounds by Walworth’s bigpunching British Cruiserweight Champion Richard Riakporhe

at the East of England Arena in Peterborough, but the 29-year-old believes that loss was the making of him as a fighter. “Even when I was at the bottom, I always knew it would turn good because I have the talent. I had a terrible loss, an embarrassing loss, and I had to pick myself up from being at an all-time low. After I sat down and did some soul-searching, I phoned Mark my manager and I said, ‘look, that’s never happening again, so let’s get a fight as soon as possible’. “It doesn’t feel surreal or anything because I always had faith that it was going to end up this way. I believe that everything happens for a reason. When I was a kid, I wanted to become Ireland’s first black World Champion. My main life-long goal is to become a World Champion. If the history comes with it, it just makes it sweeter.” ■

A POINT TO

B

PROVE

elgium Cruiserweight Bilal Laggoune has vowed to go to war when he collides with Belfast’s Tommy McCarthy for the vacant EBU European Cruiserweight Title in Wembley. This will be the second attempt at the European Title for 28-year-old Bilal, who celebrated his birthday in the ‘bubble’ this week, after he drew with Dmytro Kucher for the vacant title back in 2015 in Ghent. Laggoune has fought all but one of his 28 professional contests in his native Belgium, his only fight abroad came in December 2014 when he outpointed Stjepan Vugdelija for the EBU European Union Cruiserweight Title in Split, Croatia. His sole career loss came against France’s former World Title challenger Doudo Ngumbu back in February 2017 down at Light-Heavyweight when he found himself on the wrong end of a split decision for the WBC Francophone Title. “I am very thankful to Matchroom for the opportunity to fight on this bill,” said Laggonue. “This is my time to shine. I have always wanted to show how good I am, and I think this is the moment. This is the time. I’m so excited. We’ve done everything we can and I’m happy to be here. “I don’t think this is going to be easy. I have studied Tommy McCarthy from A to Z. He is good and he has heart, but I think he has a lot of defaults in his boxing. I am going to war. You will see a war. This is my time to announce myself to the world.” ■

THE NEXT CHAPTER “I’M K BRINGING ash Farooq is promising to bring something different to the table when he finally makes his highly anticipated Matchroom debut against Mexico’s Martin Tecuapetla. The Pakistan-born Glasgow-based talent won the British Bantamweight Title in his home city in September 2018, blitzing Jamie Wilson inside the first three minutes to claim the prestigious Lord Lonsdale Challenge Belt. Three successful defences followed before 24-year-old Farooq took on his toughest challenge yet in the form of fellow Scot Lee McGregor, losing a contentious split decision after a pulsating 12 rounder. Despite suffering his first professional defeat, Farooq’s stock grew and he believes having the time off to reflect

and work on improvements will leave him in good stead moving forward. “I’ve kept myself active and busy during this period,” said Farooq. “Whether it’s running or doing circuits in a park, anything to keep myself active. I was hoping to box maybe three times this year but it’s just one of those things, I am just grateful to be back in the ring. “Having the break off has helped me. I’ve come back fitter, stronger and healthier so it has been good. I have taken a step back and worked on a few things, slowing things down and working on punches and technique. When you have a fight date sometimes you forget about working on the other things which is what I’ve been able to do.” Looking to get himself back in the picture for titles, Farooq is confident he is on the perfect platform to do so, and that the future of Scottish boxing will be bolstered with his eye-catching performance on the huge Usyk-Chisora bill. “All I want to do is continue to improve. I’ve had great sparring in preparation for this fight. This is the next stage of my career, it’s time to go to the next level. I’m looking forward to making my Matchroom debut in this next chapter. “Theres a good few Scottish fighters at the moment, all with good TV contracts, and I believe any of them could be topping a bill at The Hydro soon. I think everyone can expect a fan-friendly style from me with a lot of head movement. I’m bringing something different, that’s what people can expect!” ■

THE BABY FACE

omen’s boxing is thriving and Southam prospect Amy Timlin is hoping to announce herself as the latest star here in the UK by claiming her first professional title when she clashes with Liverpool’s Carly Skelly. The 20-year-old, trained by former English Champion Kieran Farrell and managed by Dave Coldwell, has made a promising start to her professional career with four straight wins, and tonight competes for the Commonwealth SuperBantamweight crown. “I’ve seen some footage of her,” said Timlin. “She’s fought two girls that I’ve fought recently. She’s aggressive, that’s all I know about her really. She comes forward and she likes a good tear up. In a ten round fight you can’t keep up that pace for every round, it’s near on impossible. That could be her downfall. “She’s going to be a challenge for me. I can’t wait to show what we’ve been doing in the gym. I’ve got a great team around me and that’s very important. You need people in your corner that know the sport. Kieran (Farrell) knows the sport better than most, so to have him coaching me is brilliant. “This fight is important to me and I don’t want to look past it. I’m only focusing on the girl that I’m fighting this weekend. When this fight is over, I’ll look ahead to bigger things but at the moment my sole focus is on this fight.” ■

The 33-year-old from Liverpool has won all three of her fights on points since turning professional in May 2019, and tonight takes a step up in class to face Amy Timlin for the vacant Commonwealth Super-Bantamweight Title. Southpaw Skelly, managed by Paul Stevenson and trained by Sid Sidankey, is employed part-time as a paediatric nurse and only took up boxing at the age of 29 after taking part in a charity event. “I have the same aggressive style as Amy, come forward, and I love to fight! It’s going to be a good fight on Saturday. “It’s a great opportunity, like Amy said, we’ve both been waiting for this fight for a long time. It has been on the cards for a few months now. “Nobody really knows me, but after Saturday that will change. I’ve had a lot of support from the likes of Derry Matthews and Darren Till. Liverpool is a famous fighting city that always gets behind its own.” ■
