A WELCOME FROM
EDDIE HEARN G
ood evening to everyone tuning in around the world live on Sky Sports and DAZN. We are so happy to be back, 2021 here we go! Even in a pandemic I feel like this is the strongest start to a year Matchroom Boxing have had in a long time. It’s going to be a rough ride over the next couple of months but with plenty of drama and excitement along the way. We have some thrilling main events and stacked cards that feature some of the biggest names in British boxing returning to action as we look to make a real statement in 2021. This is the biggest year yet for Matchroom Boxing as we go global. The start of twelve shows in eight
weeks, in seven different countries. We get underway back at The SSE Arena, Wembley for the keenly anticipated return of the world’s No.1 Featherweight fighter Josh Warrington. ‘The Leeds Warrior’ can’t afford any slip-ups against Mexico’s Mauricio Lara if he is to secure a mega fight later this year. Zelfa Barrett stepsup against Spain’s former World Champion Kiko Martinez, Leigh Wood and Reece Mould clash in a brilliant fight for the vacant British Featherweight Title, Dalton Smith looks to impress again when he takes on Ishmael Ellis, and there’s action for Featherweight prospects Hopey Price and Ibrahim Nadim. ■

J
osh Warrington is all too aware that he can’t afford to slip up against
Mexico’s Mauricio Lara if he is to secure
mega fights against the likes on Xu Can and Gary Russell later this year.
‘The Leeds Warrior’ (30-0, 7 KOs) makes his long-awaited return to the ring after a 16
month absence, live on Sky Sports in the UK and on DAZN in the U.S. and more than 200 countries and territories, knowing that a win will pave way to the biggest year of his career to date.
“The next fight is always the most important one,” said Warrington. “You can’t afford to slip up. For
my legacy as a fighter, I want to
be known as someone who went in there and beat the best. This is the pinnacle of my career.
Nobody in the boxing world ever thought I’d get to this stage.
All of the big fights are there in
front of me. I’m ready to take on the bigger names.
“It’s going to be good to get back. It has been mentally
testing. There’s been dates that have changed many times. It’s been last April, then last
May, last June, last August, last October and last December. It
won’t feel like I’m back until I step
through them ropes. It won’t feel like I’m back
until that first bell rings. It’s been frustrating but now I’m ready to go.”
Warrington has become accustomed to

turn and I look to the crowd. I get in the ring
beyond, but the Featherweight kingpin will ring walk in front of a handful of officials,
TV crew and promotional staff tonight, a
strange scenario that he has been mentally preparing for.
“For the last six or seven years, I’ve headlined shows in Leeds and
Manchester. I’ve always boxed in front of big
numbers. When I first
came through, it was
smaller crowds on the
small hall scene. I’ve had
a taste of that, but I’ve got used to fighting in front

They’re there with me. During the fight I can

“Without them there, it’s going to be different.
I understand that. But
ultimately, when that first bell rings, I’ve got a man
stood in front of me who’s trying to stop me from
going where I want to be, trying to take food out of my mouth, my kids’ mouth. I have to
just focus on beating that man and moving on. For the last couple of months, I’ve been visualising what it will be like to walk out in
the empty auditorium. You’ve still got to be able to switch on.” ■

BRONCO
M
auricio Lara says he is ready to go
to war with former IBF Featherweight World Champion Josh Warrington.
The 22-year-old from Mexico City is ranked
in the top ten in the world with the IBF and is
currently enjoying a ten-fight winning streak that stretches back to May 2018 when he
suffered only his second career loss at the hands of Eliot Chavez.
‘Bronco’ (21-2, 14 KOs) has only fought outside of Mexico on one
occasion, a win over Eduardo Estela in Argentina in 2019, but the

youngster is full of confidence and believes he can rip up the script by claiming the biggest scalp in the 126lbs division this weekend.
“Initially when I heard it was a World Title
fight, I was really excited and motivated,”
“I AM GOING TO WAR”
said Lara on a recent media call. “When the news came that it was no longer going to be a World Title fight
it didn’t change things. I
remained just as motivated. We’ve prepared to do a job
and that’s what we’re going to do.
“Recently becoming a
father to a daughter is an
extra motivation for me. It’s
always an extra motivation for me when I enter the ring, whether that is for training
or fighting. I’ve prepared to come and win.
I know that I am going to win. I’ve prepared really hard to go to war in the ring.
“I’m not concerned about the decisions of
the judges if it goes to points. We’ve come
prepared to win, whether that is by knockout, which would be ideal, but if not, I’m going to make sure it is a clear victory so it doesn’t
need to depend on the judges. Either way, I think they will do their jobs correctly. “It’s normal for fighters in Mexico to
begin their careers very young and
that was the case for me. I’m going
to use that to my advantage when I go into this particular fight. Josh
Warrington is seen as the world’s
number one Featherweight fighter
in Mexico, and he’s number one for a
reason. They also believe in me, and they
know that I am going to war in London on Saturday.” ■

BROWN

Z
elfa Barrett has promised to put on a “spectacular performance” when he
collides with former World Champion
Kiko Martinez.
‘Brown Flash’ (24-1, 15 KOs) was last seen
sensationally stopping Ireland’s Eric Donovan
with a huge one-punch knockout in the eighth
round of their clash at Matchroom Fight Camp last August, but the 27-year-old Mancunian
talent was far from happy with his performance. “I had to dig deep,” said Barrett. “Eric Donavan
is a good fighter, a wicked fighter. I’ll never take anything away from him. I had to dig deep
physically, mentally and emotionally. There was
a point where my uncle said, ‘look at this kid, he’s tired, change the game plan and go forwards’. “I just looked at my arm, grabbed my cup, put my hands together and thought, ‘let’s go’. That’s what I had to do. I’ve not thrown anything perfect like that before. Practice makes perfect though. We’ve been drilling every single punch we can think of. Nothing is a fluke.
“Credit to Eric Donovan. The finish was spectacular. The middle and the
during wasn’t, for my standards. I’m a lot
better than that. On
February 13th I’m going to put on one hell
of a performance. I believe I’m one of the best fighters in Britain, in any
9
weight category. I believe in myself and
prepared for that. I can’t switch off. I’ve got
Spain’s former Super-Bantamweight World
to do. I’m going to put on a spectacular
what I do.”
Champion Martinez (41-9-2, 29 KOs) shared the ring with Barrett’s sparring partner Josh
Warrington in 2017, and Manchester favourite Scott Quigg in 2015, so the British hope is all
too aware of the threat ‘La Sensacion’ poses to his World Title aspirations.
“He’s like a train. He’s just going
to come straight at me. I respect
him as a fighter, and where he’s been. I’m there
to do a job and
performance.
“We take every fight like it’s a World Title fight.
My Uncle Pat makes sure of that anyway. The only time we didn’t is the time we got beat.
When you compare that fight to other fights,
“I’M GOING TO PUT ON A SPECTACULAR PERFORMANCE”
that wasn’t Zelfa
Barrett. Every fight
is important, every day is important, every session is important,
every round is important.

I’m there to win, to look good as well. I’ve not
knockouts. That’s what you can expect
been disciplined. I’ve sacrificed my life to get
people want to see. If it’s going to be a
underestimated this guy whatsoever. I’ve where I’m at now.
“I know for a fact he’s going to come
guns blazing. He’s going to be there every
single second of every single round. We’re

to be focused on him. That’s what I’m going

S
pain’s former World Champion Kiko Martinez believes he can use his
experience to spring an upset on
Manchester’s Zelfa Barrett when the pair collide for the IBF Intercontinental Title.
Martinez, a 52-fight veteran who captured
the IBF World Super-Bantamweight crown in 2013, hasn’t had great fortune on British soil,
losing six of his seven fights in the UK against many top fighters including Carl Frampton and Josh Warrington.
Despite history being against him, the
Spaniard is the acid test for 27-year-old
Barrett who will need to be at the very top of his game to overcome the veteran.
“I’m here to make history,” said Martinez.
“I am very motivated, and I have trained
extremely hard for this opportunity. I’m going to give blood, sweat and tears to win this
fight. I’ve got the experience and boxing is in my blood. I can spring the upset on Saturday. I want to show the boxing world why I’m still here. I want to get the big fights!

“I’M GOING TO GIVE BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS TO WIN THIS FIGHT” KO artist Martinez, who has ended 29
of his 41 victories in the ring inside the
distance, did admit he was impressed by the left hook of Zelfa Barrett. A punch the
Mancunian landed perfectly to deliver one of the standout KO’s from the Matchroom
Fight Camp series last August against Eric Donovan.
“I saw Zelfa’s KO against Eric Donovan
and it was a great punch. I have to be
aware of his left hook, as I said he is a very good counterpuncher! Despite this, without doubt I will be a real
test for Zelfa Barrett, his toughest fight so far.
“Zelfa moves very well, he
punches very hard and is a good counterpuncher. He’s a typical
English fighter and is bigger than me also, he has that advantage, but he has never been in with
anyone like me. This fight is about
making history for me by winning a
belt in a third weight class. I need the
knockout in this fight, I want to get the
victory for Spain.” ■

eigh Wood is predicting an early finish when he collides with Reece Mould for the vacant British Featherweight Title.
Nottingham’s Wood (23-2, 13 KOs) narrowly lost out to eventual MTK Golden Contract
winner Jazza Dickens in February last year, but heads into his second attempt at
capturing the prestigious Lord Lonsdale
Challenge Belt with a new approach and full of confidence having linked up with trainer Ben Davison in recent months.
“New trainer, new place. It was
challenging at first but it’s without a doubt the best move I’ve
made,” said Wood. “The way I
view boxing, my perception of
things, I’ve started learning! I’m going in there with a game-
plan and I know exactly what I’ve got to do.
“When you look back at
my previous fights, I spent most of my time dancing around, not using my
biggest attribute which is
my power. One of the first things Ben asked me is,
why do you fight like that? When I watch back the
fight with Jazza Dickens
I’m shaking my head! It’s
almost cringey, it’s a hard
watch when I identify all the things I’ve been working on
now. I can’t wait to show the new and improved version of myself.”

REECE
MOULD
R
eece Mould has warned Leigh
Wood that his career will be over if he loses their clash for the vacant
British Featherweight Title.
The undefeated Doncaster man (13-0, 6 KOs) claimed the English Featherweight
crown by knocking down Sean Davis four times in four rounds at the Doncaster Racecourse in June 2019 before
becoming mandatory challenger for the British Title recently vacated by longreigning holder Ryan Walsh. Mould, who trains alongside
Featherweight kingpin Warrington, is hoping to announce himself on
the big stage with a career-best win over Nottingham’s Wood, and the
Sean O’Hagan-trained 26-year-old is
confident that he will have an answer for whatever ‘Leigh-thal’ brings to the table. “I don’t think he shows me any respect whatsoever,” said Mould. “I’m sure on
fight night I’ll get his respect. He’s a good fighter. You can’t take that away from
him. You can’t take away what he’s done, but I believe I beat him at whatever he
brings – whether it’s boxing or fighting. If he wants to stand in there and go toeto-toe with me I’m willing to do that.
“It’s just how he talks about me, saying my opportunity has come too soon. I
watched an interview with him saying
it shouldn’t be me who’s mandatory, it
should have been one of them who were fighting in the Golden Contract. I don’t
care what he’s got to say, I’ll do whatever
I need to do on February 13 and beat him.

“IF I BEAT HIM IT WILL BE THE END OF HIS CAREER” “This is going to be my breakout fight.
That’s what we’re looking to do. You could say that I’ve boxed under the radar even
though I have been on a few Matchroom
shows before. I’ve never had that pressure
of Sky Sports on my back like a lot of these young fighters have. This fight is going to really put my name out there.
“All of the pressure is on Leigh Wood.
He’s known and I’m not really known. I believe if I beat him it will be the end
of his career, and he knows that deep down. When I beat him it’s the end of
the road for him. I’ve got no pressure on my shoulders whatsoever.” ■

D
alton Smith will once again look to
demonstrate why he is rated as one of the very best prospects in British
boxing when he takes on late stand-in
opponent Ishmael Ellis over ten rounds.
‘Thunder’ (6-0, 5 KOs), who was originally
slated to fight Rotherham’s Lee Appleyard before the Stefy Bull-trained 33-year-old
was forced to withdraw from their contest after contracting Coronavirus, will be
hoping to build on a career-best win last
time out when he stopped Nathan Bennett with a massive one-punch KO in the fifth round of their Fight Camp clash. Smith, Sheffield’s most
successful amateur boxer of all
time, has made a perfect start to life in the paid ranks, winning all six of his bouts in impressive
fashion and stopping all but one opponent inside the distance, and the just-turned 24-year-
old talent has another golden opportunity to shine on this
weekend’s Josh Warrington
vs. Mauricio Lara undercard - Matchroom’s first show of the year.
“The Lee Appleyard fight was a fight that I was
massively up for and I think
it would have been a great fight at the
perfect time in my career,” said Smith. “It’s just one of those things. We’re still in the middle of a pandemic and people are
going to catch the virus. It’s a fight I was
looking forward to and I’m pretty sure we

“I’ve only had six fights but I’m
stepping up quite fast. You’ve got to make sure that you’re going
at the right pace. You don’t want to be rushed too fast. You’ve got
to get that experience in. I’ve got
a good team around me. We’re
every style out there, some of the best
kids in the world. I
was able to adapt.
If you become onedimensional, you’re not going to reach the top, especially
in the professional
ranks. I know that I’m
able to adapt. I’ve got the power to back it
up. I can fight and I can box. I know that I’m comfortable when I’m in that ring.
“They always say you can’t buy experience. I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world. There’s been a lot of situations where it’s
been uncomfortable – especially over the
Team GB camps. It makes you into a man.
When it gets tough in that ring, that’s when
the experience kicks in. If you’ve been there
before then you know how to deal with it.” ■

ISH B
irmingham’s Ishmael Ellis comes
into tonight’s clash with Sheffield Super-Lightweight sensation
Dalton Smith with a point to prove having
suffered back-to-back defeats.
The 29-year-old, who has twice challenged for the Midlands Area Lightweight Title,
took the step-up in November 2019 when
he fought then 9-0 Jack O’Keeffe but was outpointed.
Ten months later ‘Ish’ returned in another tough fight against unbeaten Craig Macintyre but suffered his
first stoppage defeat to the tough Glaswegian.
Not one to be deterred, Ellis has vowed to make the most of
his short-notice opportunity and cause a seismic upset against
one of the hottest prospects in British boxing.
“I’m 100% here to win this
weekend. A lot of fighters
have been turning these
opportunities down but us
underdog fighters can’t be turning
down these opportunities”, said Ellis.
“I do believe that I can give him a good
fight on Saturday night. I took that loss last year. It was my own fault. I wasn’t really
prepared for the fight; I was out of training.
The opportunity came and I was just eager
to fight. I just want to keep on going. I’ve had a bit more time to prepare for this one. I haven’t taken this fight just to go down in the first round and leave. I’ve come
here to prove myself and gain something from this.” ■

Ibrahim Nadim tonight takes the leap in the toughest test of his
professional journey so far.
The former England Boxing National
Amateur Champion moved to 2-0 in March
last year with a points victory over Stefan
Nicolae at Manchester Arena, three months after winning his professional debut at Bethnal Green’s York Hall.
Victory for Nadim over the rough and
rugged Jonny Phillips, who comes into
tonight’s fight full of confidence, will push
him onto more big fights in 2021 as young prospects continue to be fast-tracked
amidst the challenging times we find ourselves in.
‘Ibby’ is aware of the threat that
Phillips poses, after he proved at
Fight Camp last summer that he
can more than hold his own at this
level, taking the highly rated Hopey Price the distance at Matchroom HQ.
“I am so grateful to have this opportunity”, said Nadim. “I
have stayed patient and will
be ready for whatever Jonny
Phillips brings. This year has been frustrating, but I’ve used it to my
advantage to work hard in the
gym with Ricky, you have to look at
the positives of everything.

THE
MATADOR
J
onny Phillips is
planning on handing
Keighley Featherweight
prospect Ibrahim Nadim his first loss. ‘The Matador’, or ‘Mental Jonny
Phillips’ as promoter Eddie Hearn calls him, won fans over with his
crazy antics in the Essex bubble last summer ahead of his points loss to highly rated Leeds Featherweight talent Hopey Price on the second instalment of Matchroom Fight Camp.
Phillips jumps back in the ring with
another top youngster this weekend, Ricky Hatton-trained 21-year-old Nadim, who has won both of his
professional outings on points. The business owner from Sandhurst believes he will have too much
experience and size for Nadim. “I really enjoyed Fight Camp,”
said Phillips. “You’re having breakfast, lunch and dinner with the person
you’re about to have a tear up with. Seeing the person you’re about to
trade leather with every day is quite
weird. It was like a little holiday for me really – I loved the whole experience. “To be honest I never watch any of
my opponents. My coach does that because he knows more than me.
We’ve come up with a little game-

“I’M READY TO ROCK AND ROLL!” “Last time I had to cut a lot of weight, and
because it was around the first lockdown, I hadn’t been in the gym that much. I
haven’t left the gym since that fight really. Mentally, I’m ready for everything, and I
really think it’s going to be my night. I’m
going to go out there and steal the show for a second time.
“I’m ready to rock and roll. My team tell
me he’s a good amateur and he has a good jab. There’s a couple of negative things they’ve seen in him. That’s what
we’ve been working on. I’m not going to
take anything away from him. There’s no
bad blood there. I think Hopey is a little bit better than him.
“I’m actually stepping down another
weight so I’m going to be an absolute
monster in there compared to him. I just
don’t think he’s experienced enough. This is my eleventh pro fight now – I’ve been
in there with World Title contenders and British Champions.
“He’s had two fights against two bums,
and he couldn’t even stop them. I’m not
worried at all. He seems like an alright fella and he was a good amateur, but I think
I’m going to smash his face in for him. I’ve had four weeks’ notice and it feels like I’ve had a full camp. I just can’t wait to get in the bubble.” ■
