A WELCOME FROM
EDDIE HEARN
W
hat an amazing couple of weeks we’ve had since the launch of Fight Camp! I didn’t think we’d see a better fight than Ted Cheeseman vs. Sam Eggington, but then came along Terri Harper and Natasha Jonas who went to war for the WBC SuperFeatherweight crown last Friday. It was another Fight of the Year contender here at Matchroom HQ and a brilliant advert for women’s boxing, but I believe this week’s card could be the best of the three so far from top to bottom, with plenty of 50-50 battles for you all to enjoy. Talking of Fight of the Year contenders, Felix Cash was involved in a thrilling toe-to-toe scrap last time out as he put his Commonwealth Middleweight Title on the line against Jack Cullen, he defends his belt again against former World Title challenger Jason Welborn in what is a huge fight for both men. Our new signing Zelfa Barrett has the potential to become Manchester’s new star following the retirement
of Anthony Crolla, he has a tough test on his Matchroom debut as he takes on Ireland’s undefeated former amateur standout Eric Donovan for the IBF Intercontinental SuperFeatherweight Title. It’s time for popular Watford SuperBantamweight Shannon Courtenay to prove that the hype is real and it’s a great chance for her to do just that, she faces the best opponent of her pro career in the shape of Rachel Ball, who has proved that she can mix it at world level. Heavy-handed Super-Middleweight menace John Docherty has a habit of ending proceedings early, but the exciting 22-year-old prospect has his work cut out this evening against the tough and game Anthony Fox, who is on a three-fight winning streak. The domestic 154lbs division is on fire at the moment and Kieron Conway believes that his name deserves to be right at the top of the mix, ‘Too Class’ will need to prove it as he takes on Rotherham’s Navid Mansouri for the WBA Intercontinental Title. Sit back, relax and enjoy the fights! ■

elix Cash says he will ‘deal with’ Jason Welborn in style before turning his attention to a shot at the Lord Lonsdale Challenge Belt. Cash (12-0, 8 KOs) puts his Commonwealth Middleweight Title up for grabs against former World Title challenger Welborn following his thrilling toe-to-toe battle with Jack Cullen last time out at Manchester Arena in November. Wokingham’s Cash, trained by Tony Sims in Essex, forced an eighth round stoppage to settle an explosive Fight of the Year contender with Cullen on the undercard of

Katie Taylor’s WBO Super-Lightweight World Title triumph over Greece’s Christina Linardatou. The 27-year-old is promising more fireworks this weekend as he takes centre stage at the top of a bill for the very first time in his career, looking to make a big statement against Tividale’s former British Middleweight Champion Welborn. “Every time he goes up against a top operator, he comes up short, and I believe I’m a top operator,” said Cash. “He might make it tough for a few rounds, but I’ll get him in the end. I’m zoned in, ready to do some damage and retain my Commonwealth Title. He’s been in with top names, so I’ll have a look at him during the first couple of rounds and then go to work on him. “He may have the experience over me, but I’ve got the skill. He’s going to need to be the very best he can be. He’s
going to have to raise his game, and I hope he does. He’s a tough, strong and game lad. He’s been around for a while and fought for World Titles. I’m here to take on all challengers and take them all out. It will be a good fight while it lasts. “I’m headlining for the first time and hopefully it won’t be the last. It’s a great platform for me to be on and a great show for me to put on a top performance and a clinical display. This will really raise my profile and get my name out there for more big fights in the Middleweight division. “I’ve got to deal with Welborn first but I want a shot at the Lord Lonsdale Belt next. It’s a lovely belt, it’s one of the greatest domestic belts you can own. I’d love to fight for that next and win it. I’ll fight anyone out there in Britain for it, and then anyone out there in the world for more titles after.” ■

ason Welborn says he was close to walking away from boxing after his controversial loss to James Metcalf last year, but the former World Title challenger has a newfound hunger ahead of his Commonwealth Middleweight Title clash with Felix Cash. Welborn (24-8, 7 KOs) was stopped with a left hook to the body in round eight when he took on Metcalf for the vacant Commonwealth 154lbs belt in Leeds. The Liverpudlian was warned by referee Steve Gray for straying low with his punches in the sixth, then, in the eighth, Welborn was given added time to recover from a low shot. Metcalf had a point deducted for the low shot before finishing proceedings moments later. Tividale’s Welborn was left seriously considering his future in the sport that has seen him win the British, WBC International and Midlands Area Titles but his desire to land the Commonwealth strap pushed him on to fight another day. “I dropped back down to LightMiddleweight in my last fight against Metcalf,” said Welborn. “I was disgusted with everything that happened in that fight. I was going to walk away from the sport. I thought ‘you know what, I don’t need boxing’. At the end of day, I’ve worked hard to get here, and these up-and-coming fighters are getting looked after with the refs, but I don’t want to go out like that. “It was my wife who made me get back

into it. She said, ‘that’s my belt, go and get it’. She knows what I’ve done to get here. My work is really successful at the minute and I could put all of my time into that if I wanted to, but who knows what more I could achieve in boxing. I’ve got more to give the sport and there’s something out there waiting for me. I’m not going out until I know what it is.” Armed with a full training camp after plenty of notice, Welborn is confident his preparation will help him pull off an eyecatching win over the highly-rated Matchroom fighter, who he feels has had it easy with backing from a major promoter. “He’s been with Matchroom as soon as he turned pro. He’s had the luxury

of long camps and plenty of notice. When I’ve been working, I’ve had a calls off Errol Johnson at two weeks’ notice sometimes. When Nav Mansouri pulled out against Liam Smith I stepped in at two weeks’ notice and did what I could at the time. “Life changes and I’ve got lucky with sponsorships and I’ve moved forwards. I’ve won a British Title, if I walked away from the sport now I’ve got nothing left to prove. Not many people have done what I’ve done for the Black Country. He’s had it fed with a silver spoon. If I’d have had his backing, I’d have probably been a World Champion. I’ve always had the heart and the hunger for boxing. I’ve just never had the backing or the support where I can train full time. “I’ve had good notice for this fight and I’m feeling good up at Middleweight not having to worry about the weight so much. It’s business and at the end of the day I’m coming to do a job, the same as him. I think it’s going to be a scrap. By the time fight night comes around I’ll be ready for a good hard 12 rounds. I’m topping the bill and I’m going to make a good statement in this fight.” ■

elfa Barrett insists that he was more than happy to jump at the opportunity to make his highly-anticipated Matchroom Boxing debut behind closed doors against undefeated Irishman Eric Donovan. Barrett (23-1, 14 KOs) inked a promotional deal with Eddie Hearn in March and immediately secured a spot on the undercard of the blockbuster Dillian Whyte vs. Alexander Povetkin show at Manchester Arena that was heading for a complete sell-out before being postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Instead of making his debut under the Matchroom banner in front of thousands of fans at one of the most iconic fight venues around the world,
‘Brown Flash’ will now look to impress Sky Sports and DAZN viewers from the unique outdoor setting at Hearn’s old family home in deepest Essex. “I’m very excited because all eyes are on the fighter,” said Barrett. “There’s no crowd, so everyone will be turning in to watch it on TV. The viewing figures are going to be huge. A fighter will fight anywhere. A true fighter will fight anywhere. People say, ‘some fighters need crowds’ or whatever but to me it’s all rubbish. “When you put those little gloves on, and you put your shorts on; you’re in a fight. No matter what anyone else says, you’re in a fight. You get that same feeling with one person watching or 50,000 people watching. Those fans

can’t help you when you’re in the ring. “You might hear the crowd when things are going good, but you won’t hear the crowd when things are going bad. You’re in a fight, you’re there to do a job and you’ve got an opponent on the other side of the ring. A fight is a fight.” Nephew of former European SuperLightweight Champion Pat Barrett, Zelfa is regarded as one of the hottest prospects in British boxing. He picked up the Commonwealth Title against Lyon Woodstock at the First Direct Arena in Leeds before halting Jordan McCorry in nine rounds in his first defence of the belt. The Manchester native who trains out of the renowned Collyhurst and Moston ABC isn’t short on confidence and hopes to kickstart a World Title push in the 130lbs division with a standout performance against

‘Lilywhite Lightning’ Donovan in front of his new promoter. “I have to put on a performance because all eyes are on me. It’s not like another show is taking place on the same day. It’s just our show. Fighters are entertainers as well as fighters. I’ll put on a performance no doubt. I don’t train this hard and live a fighter’s life to not put on a performance. It’s my dream to fight live on TV and put on a performance. “The opportunities are endless with Eddie. You’ve just got to be ready. I’m like a Josh Warrington or a Kid Galahad - I live in the gym. I’m a gym rat. There’s so many opportunities out there in my weight division. Confidence is everything. You can have all of the ability in the world but if you don’t believe in it then you’re not going anywhere. I believe I’m one of the best fighters in Britain.” ■

LILYWHITE
LIGHTNING E ric Donovan finally has his big breakout opportunity as he takes on top Matchroom prospect Zelfa Barrett for the vacant IBF Intercontinental SuperFeatherweight Title. Donovan (12-0, 7 KOs) is undefeated in the paid code since making the decision to turn over in 2016 following a standout amateur career in which he won five Irish National Championships, as well as representing his country, winning bronze medals at the 2009 European Union Championships and the 2010 European Championships. As an amateur, ‘Lilywhite Lightning’ faced some of the best fighters on the planet, locking horns with Olympic, World and European

Champions. Despite winning the Irish National Featherweight Title last year, the 35-year-old has yet to be properly tested in his pro career, but feels his clash with Manchester’s Barrett could be the fight that propels him towards more title action at 126lbs or 130lbs. “I don’t believe I’ve been tested truly,” said Donovan. “I don’t believe my character has been tested, I don’t believe my mental or physical ability has been tested to the maximum. You need that stress in front of you. You need that threat of someone trying to take your head off. “If I don’t perform to the best of my ability, then Zelfa Barrett will beat me. That’s why I’m up for this fight and that’s why I know you’re going to see the best Eric Donovan on August 14th. I have an opportunity to salvage a career.
To make something of my career. To go out and finish off my boxing journey with a bang. To finally say I’ve done it my way. “I’m absolutely delighted to be here and I’m very grateful for the opportunity. I think in life if you want to be successful, no matter what, you have to take risks. You also have to be able to back it up. You have to be good enough and you have to prepare well. When this opportunity was presented to me, I knew that chances and opportunities for me are few and far between. “Nobody has the balls to fight Zelfa at Super-Featherweight in Britain. So when Mark put it to me I said, ‘yes Mark, I’ll step up to it and I’ll take that because I see an opportunity’. If I can perform to the best of my ability on Friday night I think I can do enough to win. I can see holes in Zelfa Barrett that I can exploit. Destiny awaits me on August 14th.” ■

S
hannon Courtenay says she is ready to justify her hype when she takes on Rachel Ball over eight rounds in a Super-Bantamweight contest at Matchroom Fight Camp. 'The Baby Face Assassin' turned heads with five wins on the bounce in her first year as a professional, fighting across London at the Copper Box Arena, York Hall and The O2 in Greenwich, now the hugely-popular 27-year-old takes a leap up in class to face Ball in her toughest assignment to date. "This is going to be a fight where you can actually see what I’m about,"

said Courtenay. "Some people think that she might win, so I feel like I’m going to prove a lot of people wrong and I’m looking forward to making a statement. I perform well under pressure. When you put me in sparring with better girls, I perform better. You’ll see that on fight night. "I'm going to shock a lot of people. Nothing worth having comes easy and I’ve worked so hard. I think every fight was a learning curve. Every fighter that I’ve

come across was very different. I’ve learnt with every fight. It has been a bit of an apprenticeship for me. Now is the right time for me to step up, have a tough fight and show people what I’m all about.” Three-time kickboxing World Champion Ball has been in a fiery mood since arriving at the official fighter hotel on Monday, questioning how the untested Courtenay will cope when she has a live opponent with 'monstrous' height in front of her. Watford's Courtenay has warned Ball that she would be a fool to underestimate her punch power. "This was the first fight that was offered to me for Fight Camp and there was no hesitation in taking it from me. I’ll be honest with you; I didn’t know a great lot about Rachel. I know that from the day I had my debut, she was Tweeting about me non-stop. I’ve been living in her head rent free for at least a year now, so that’s fine by me. "I had a little watch of her afterwards. She’s tall, but there’s nothing that worries me about her. I’m confident going into this fight. I think I’ll be too strong. She's around a foot taller than me. She might think someone this small might not be able to hurt her. Let me assure you, I carry power and she will feel it, 100%.” ■

achel Ball is preparing to give fight fans the “shock of their lives” when she takes on popular Watford prospect Shannon Courtenay. The three-time kickboxing World Champion racked up four wins on the bounce after switching to professional boxing in 2017, including a points win over Eftychia Kathopouli in an all-out war at the Banks’s Stadium that saw both fighters touch the canvas. Her first loss came against current Interim WBC Super-Featherweight World Champion Katherina Thanderz last year when she travelled to Norway at short notice to take on the former European Champion over eight rounds in Arendal. Despite Thanderz stepping in heavy on the scales, the fight went ahead and Ball pushed ‘Katy’ all the way in a close points loss. Having proved she can mix it with world level fighters, Ball has questioned how the relatively untested Courtenay will cope in her first real step up. “Fans are going to have the shock of their lives,” said Ball. “They’re going to see a tall skinny ginger girl from Walsall coming in and smashing it up in Eddie’s back garden. I can’t wait and I think everyone is going to enjoy it.

“I DON’T MIND HAVING A GOOD TEAR UP” It’s going to be a brilliant fight. “People say keep it long and I’m sure I will, but if it comes down to it, I don’t mind having a good tear up. I’d love that. That’s not a problem. How will she cope with someone who throws back at her? How will she cope with the pressure?”
Ball, the only woman to win the BBBofC Midlands Area Fight of the Year Award, heads into her showdown with Courtenay as the underdog with the bookies, a tag that she happily owns as she looks to announce herself on the big stage. “A lot of people have me down as the underdog. I’m only the underdog because people don’t know me. It’s not a reflection of my skills or my ability to fight. I’m sure they’ll see that come fight night. The underdog tag spurs me on because I want to prove to people how good a fighter I am. “As soon as the fight was announced and it was out with the bookies I had people putting money on me. People back at home have been betting on me. If I win, I’m going to be really popular on August 14th! Hopefully it will be a good pay day for everyone watching at home.” ■

ieron Conway will put friendship aside when he takes on former sparring partner and MTK Global stablemate Navid Mansouri for the vacant WBA Intercontinental SuperWelterweight Title. ‘Too Class’ (14-1-1, 3 KOs) is in a fiery mood as he looks to land his first professional belt after having to settle for a draw against former British 154lbs Champion Ted Cheeseman in a close battle at the famous York Hall in June of last year. Two wins against Konrad Stempkowski and Craig O’Brien followed for the Northampton talent who will now look to make his mark in a red-hot SuperWelterweight division that contains the likes of Matchroom stablemates Kell Brook, Scott Fitzgerald, Cheeseman and Anthony Fowler. “My job is to win and that’s all I’m focused on,” said Conway. “I feel extremely confident. ruthless. I’m hitting harder, I’m hitting faster and I’m fitter. I just don’t see anything other than me winning this fight. “I’m here with hard intentions. I’m not here to mess around or make friends. I’m here to win whatever it takes. I’ve watched every fight that I can find of Nav 100 times. I must watch them every day. I never used to watch my opponent’s fights and I think that was a downfall for me. I just went in there with my plan and that was it. “I’ve studied all of his fights. Yeah, he might come in a different guy. You never know what he’s doing but I’ve watched all them fight and I’ve seen mistakes, patterns and everything. I’m really confident with this one. My training camp has gone really well. I believe in my process 100%. “Nav is a nice guy. I remember I went over to Marbella January time a few years ago just before my first pro fight. We did a few rounds. I can’t remember if we sparred once or twice but we got six or eight rounds in. From what I remember he wasn’t in good shape so I can’t take much from it. “Like I say, he’s a nice guy but I’m not here to make friends. I’m here to win and I’m here to completely dominate. I’m young and I’m early on in my career. Nav is older than me and has had a lot more fights than me but it’s come to the point where age isn’t going to be a factor for me anymore. If you’re good enough, you’re good enough.” ■

avid Mansouri believes his ring craft will be too much for Kieron Conway. Former English Champion Mansouri (20-3-2, 6 KOs) hasn’t fought in the UK since July 2017 when he
decisioned Jordan Grannum over six rounds, his first fight in over two years after an Achilles injury ruled him out of his scheduled British and Commonwealth Title fight with Welshman Liam Williams.
21
Rotherham’s Mansouri made the decision to base himself out of Marbella, Spain, where he began to rebuild his career with three wins in 2018. ‘Nav’ lost out in a close decision for the IBF Intercontinental Title to Jorge Fortea in February 2019 before travelling out to Rotterdam to face Stephen Danyo for the WBA Continental belt, where he fell short again. Despite his losses, 31-year-old Mansouri is convinced he will have too much in the tank for Northampton’s rising star ‘Too Class’ Conway on his big return to UK soil. Since making his pro debut in 2017, Conway has boxed 87 rounds in 16 bouts, compared to Mansouri’s 143 rounds in 25 bouts. “I think they’re overlooking me,” said Mansouri. “They think Nav is done, but this fight just brought me back to life. I need this win. I’m desperate to get this win. It puts that little bit extra fire into

it. I’m confident. I’m well-schooled and experienced in this game now. We never stop learning. I think I’ll have too much experience for Conway when it comes down to it. “We shared some rounds a few years ago in Marbella but I can’t take anything from that. I can’t remember too much from the spar. It was a long time ago and he’s come on loads, and I’ve come on loads since then too. I was injured back then as well. He’s a really nice kid but this is business and it’s my chance to shine again in the UK. “We kind of box in similar ways. We’ll set traps for each other and it will be an intelligent fight. That’s the way I see it going. It’s all about the timing and speed, and the work rate we’re going to put into it. He’s tough and slick, it will be a great fight to watch. I haven’t boxed in the UK for a few years, now is the time to make a statement.” ■

ohn Docherty says he needs to beat Anthony Fox “in style when they clash over eight rounds in a Super-Middleweight affair. The heavy-handed Scot has a habit of ending proceedings early, with six of his eight wins to date coming by way of knockout, but the fast rising Tony Sims-trained talent has his work cut out this weekend against the tough and game Fox, who is currently enjoying an impressive threefight winning streak.
25
“I’M HERE TO DO A JOB ON HIM AND KNOCK HIM OUT” Docherty was taken the distance for the first time by Middleton journeyman Darryl Sharp in August 2019 and saw the final bell again against Lewis van Poetsch in October, but ‘The Doc’ has no intention of completing the full eight rounds against Fox as he looks towards a first Title shot in his next fight. “Anthony Fox is just above journeyman level,” said Docherty. “I’m not going to say he’s great. not going to say he’s not good. I’m here to do a job on him and knock him out. Me and Tony have been through our game plan and we know what we’re going to do. We’re going to walk through Anthony Fox and look good doing it. “I’ve taken Anthony Fox seriously. He’s like a British Champion to me. I’ve left everything in the gym. I know I’ve done everything right in this camp. Tony has been there pushing me on the whole way through. You’ll see on the night. I’ll be a completely different fighter. I’ll put on a top performance. “I would love to make a statement with a knockout. He’s on a good run of form and we all know how tough he is. He can box a bit too. If he comes to fight me I think I’ll knock him out very quickly. If he comes to box, then he’ll survive for a bit and he might make it through a few rounds.” ■

nthony Fox remained tight lipped at this week’s media events, not giving much away at Wednesday’s press conference despite the best efforts of promoter Eddie Hearn. Clearly a man who prefers to do his talking in the ring, Wesbury’s Fox finds himself in a rich vein of form with three wins on the bounce stretching back to October 2018. Fox’s red-hot run of form began with a win over former Commonwealth Super-Middleweight Champion Luke Blackledge, a win over Welsh Area Champion Morgan Jones followed in March 2019 before ‘The Matador’

Tough as old boots, Fox has been in with the likes of British and Commonwealth 168lbs Champ Lerrone Richards, former English 154lbs ruler Jack Flatley and former Midlands Area 154lbs Champ Craig Cunningham, and the 25-year-old should prove to be a great test for John Docherty. “We’re focused on this fight,” said Fox. “That’s it really. I know he hits hard, but I hit hard as well. 100%, I don’t think it’s going eight rounds. Either I’m getting stopped or he’s getting stopped. That’s it.” ■
