A WELCOME FROM

EDDIE HEARN

T

his is it. The final week of Fight Camp. It has been just the most remarkable project we’ve ever been involved with. The return of big-time boxing has been an overwhelming success. We’ve had a wonderful three weeks so far with some of the fights of the year. This week is really the first major card, the first major names to return to the sport of boxing since the pandemic. It’s a thrilling fight card and a fitting way to bring the curtain down on a special four weeks at Matchroom HQ. Every single fight is a pick’em fight. Dillian Whyte has been patiently waiting for a shot at the WBC Heavyweight World Title for over 1000 days and he can finally secure a shot at the famous green and gold belt by overcoming Russian dangerman Alexander Povetkin. This is a Heavyweight thriller and so important to the landscape of the division. Dillian sits as Mandatory Challenger to Fury and while the wait is frustrating, Dillian continues to take high risk fights and that’s why he is such a fans’ favourite. The scariest thing about Povetkin is his level all the time - from when he fought Joshua, Hunter, Price - I have not seen him deviate. Not even the tone of his voice. He is a machine! He is programmed

to destroy. He will do everything in his power to do that. Since their epic Fight of the Year contender at MSG last year, everyone has wanted to see Katie Taylor and Delfine Persoon lock horns again and now we have it. I’m very proud to stage this fight, especially at such a critical time for our sport. I can’t give enough credit to Katie and Delfine for agreeing to do it again. Luther Clay and Chris Kongo are two of the most exciting Welterweight prospects in the country and they will both be looking to make a statement to secure further opportunities on the big stage. Tempers have threatened to boil over between Alen Babic and Shawndell Winters in the bubble this week, but luckily both men have just about kept a lid on it. This has all of the makings for an explosive Heavyweight war between up-and-coming star Babic and experienced warrior Winters. Jack Cullen returns to the ring up at SuperMiddleweight following his toe-to-toe war with Felix Cash last time out in Manchester. ‘Little Lever’s Meat Cleaver’ won’t have his fanatical support behind him as he goes to war with Fulham’s Zak Chelli in what promises to be another barnburner. So for one last time… Sit back, relax and enjoy the fights! ■

THE BODY

SNATCHER

D

illian Whyte has warned Alexander Povetkin he can launch into an explosive assault at any moment of their crucial Heavyweight showdown at the top of the Matchroom Fight Camp finale. The Brixton Heavyweight (27-1, 18 KOs) made his brutal intentions clear to his Russian opponent during the fight week press conference, as he prepares to put his Interim WBC Heavyweight crown on the line. Povetkin, a former WBA World Champion, has only suffered defeat at the highest level to Wladimir Klitschko and Anthony Joshua, but ‘The Body Snatcher’ is confident that he has more

than enough fire power to produce an explosive knockout. “Povetkin is the most technical fighter I’ve fought,” said Whyte. “He has beaten a lot of top guys. He’s an Olympic gold medallist. He’s only lost two fights. When the bell goes it doesn’t matter if there’s 100,000 people there or 100 people. You are zoned in. “When I’m in shape, you’ve got problems, because I can do what I like to do. I don’t mind blowing up because I can recover, go again. Whatever he wants to do, I’m cool with it. I don’t like to make predictions. He is very experienced and can look after himself. He’s a tough guy. But listen, if I land early?

WHYTE VS POVETKIN

It is night night early. But he can do the same, as well. Whyte insists he is fully aware that Povetkin can derail his plans to challenge for the WBC belt, which is currently held by Tyson Fury. “The story of my life is pressure. I’ve been under pressure my entire life. This is just another puzzle. There is more pressure because of the future, but that’s in the future. I’m fighting a consummate professional so I’m not bothered about Tyson Fury. I’m bothered about Povetkin. “I deal with pressure well. I could have taken an easier fight. These are the fights you need to grow. This guy has seen everything, probably 20 guys like me. To beat him, I will bank his experience. This motivates me. I will have to think more than I normally do. It gives me an extra edge. “I had two fights last year but my mind wasn’t right. I put weight on. For my last fight I was nearly 20st. I got myself in shape slowly. I knew who I was fighting, and what it would take. I got into shape. “I’m ready for chaos and violence. I am focused on Povetkin. I will try to hurt him from the first bell. It will be war - that’s what he does. The great thing is that we both do similar things. It’s up to me to do things to make the fight in my favour, and I am capable of that. He is more experienced but I know how to fight, which isn’t something anyone can teach.” ■

“I’M READY FOR CHAOS AND VIOLENCE” 5

RUSSIAN

VITYAZ A

lexander Povetkin is out to prove that he is still a force to be reckoned with in the Heavyweight division by derailing Dillian Whyte’s World Title hopes. Russian dangerman Povetkin (35-2-1, 24 KOs), an Olympic gold medallist and former WBA World Champion, reminded everyone of his credentials in 2019 with a win over Hughie Fury in August and a split decision draw with rising Heavyweight contender Michael Hunter in an all-out war in Saudi Arabia. With the WBC Interim and Diamond belts on the line, and a shot at the winner of Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder 3, Saturday’s clash is crucial for both men, and ‘Sasha’ insists he won’t be looking past Whyte.

6

AUGUST 22 2020 | WEEK 4 FIGHT CAMP

WHYTE VS POVETKIN

“I’m not even thinking about potentially fighting the winner of Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder, all my focus is on Dillian Whyte,” said Povetkin. “He is my motivation. I always love boxing in the UK. I hope that this fight with Dillian will be another fantastic fight for everyone tuning in at home around the world.” “When I got the news the fight was cancelled we had just finished the conditioning stage of camp, I was disappointed but it was what it was. For me the most important motivation is fighting the best fighters possible right now, I respect Dillian as a fighter as he only wants the toughest fights. “I don’t think that Dillian’s left hook is his only dangerous shot, his right hand is also very good. He has many different attributes as a fighter. I don’t care that this is behind closed doors, the most important thing is that we have a good opponent and we have a ring.

“I DON’T LIKE TO MAKE PREDICTIONS BUT IT WILL BE FIREWORKS...” Nothing else matters! “When I boxed Hunter I didn’t box to the best of my ability, I made some mistakes and against Dillian I need to improve my defence, that is the main thing we have been working on. I have taken responsibility to train for this fight, understanding how serious it is. You have to take Dillian seriously. I don’t like to make predictions - but it will be fireworks...” ■

THIS TIME K

atie Taylor says she will silence her critics by putting on a “dominant performance” when she defends her WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO and Ring Magazine Lightweight World Titles against Delfine Persoon in a huge rematch at Matchroom Fight Camp. The undefeated Irish star (15-0, 6 KOs) captured the WBC crown with a majority-decision victory last June in New York, which was greeted with dismay by Belgium’s Persoon after ten thrilling rounds that had the MSG crowd on their feet throughout, and they will renew their rivalry this weekend in the biggest women’s rematch in the history of the sport. Taylor is looking to get a more definitive win over Persoon before moving on to further legacy fights as she continues to cement herself as one of the best female fighters of all time. A second fight with newly-crowned

“THIS FIGHT HAS BEEN HANGING OVER MY HEAD FOR A YEAR” 9

Undisputed Welterweight ruler Jessica McCaskill could be on the cards after the American caused a huge upset against long-reigning champion Cecilia Braekhus over the weekend. “I’m in this sport to create history and leave a great legacy,” said Taylor. “These are the kind of fights that are going to leave a great legacy in my career. The first fight was too close for my liking. It has been hanging over my head over the last year, so I was delighted when the rematch was nailed down. I’m looking forward to putting on a more dominant performance on August 22nd and shutting up everyone that has criticised me over the last year. “I did watch the fight back and it was obviously a very close fight. That’s why there is a rematch. I definitely couldn’t have given her more than five rounds, so for people to say it was a disgraceful decision or it was a robbery, is a

disgrace in itself. I felt like I deserved to win the fight even though it was very close. I wanted this rematch. At the end of the day, I want to be involved in the biggest fights and the fights that people are interested in. This is a huge fight for me and for Persoon. It’s a huge fight for the sport. “I think I’m going to be a completely different fighter on August 22nd. I think people are going to see a completely different performance and a completely different fight from my perspective. I got drawn into a bit of a fight in the first one and sometimes that happens. I’m definitely going to be a bit more disciplined in this fight. I’m going to be ready for whatever Persoon throws at me. I’m completely prepared for this fight. I’ve been training for a big fight since January so I’m more than ready to step in and put on a dominant performance.” ■

REVENGE MISSION “EVERYBODY D THINKS efline Persoon has admitted her surprise that Katie Taylor embraced a rematch after their controversial first fight in New York. Taylor won the Undisputed Lightweight World Titles at Madison Square Garden last year by beating Belgium’s Persoon via a majority decision, and they will meet in an edgy second fight on Saturday. Persoon (44-2, 18 KOs) was disgusted with the decision, storming out of the ring after their Fight of the Year contender on the undercard of Andy Ruiz’s huge Heavyweight win over Anthony Joshua. Irish star Taylor puts her WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO and Ring Magazine Lightweight crowns on the line against Persoon after Amanda Serrano pulled out of

their scheduled showdown, and the 35-year-old is ready to seize her golden opportunity. “It’s up to me to prove that I also deserve the Titles,” said Persoon. “In New York, for us, it was not the correct decision. Everybody thinks I won the first fight with Taylor. It’s good there is a rematch. We will see who the best fighter is. We didn’t think Taylor would grant a rematch. We were very surprised Katie is taking this risk. For her, it is a big risk. If she loses, it isn’t good for her career. “A war? This is boxing. Punch, punch back. It is not a war. Grabbing and holding is not boxing. Boxing offensively, jabbing and working, is the way to box. I respect her style. I must prove my style, like I did in New York, but even better. But I like to box in front. Boxing with my heart can be a problem, sometimes I forget to use my brain. I must not give her time to hold me. Don’t give her the time. “I could see I am bigger than her. I have to start the fight faster than last time, with a higher tempo. But I can’t change the whole thing. My way of boxing is with pressure. I can box also on the back foot but, a lot of the time, my opponents don’t pressure me. But I can do it. I spar with guys in Belgium who are stronger than me. They give me problems and I find solutions. Against a girl, I always feel stronger because I train with men.” ■

THE BLACK

PANTHER

L

uter Clay has warned Chris Kongo that he will be looking to end their WBO Global Welterweight Title fight early as he looks to continue his climb up the rankings in the 147lbs division. Bracknell’s Clay (13-1, 5 KOs) is enjoying a rich vein of form after snatching the WBO ranking Title from Italy’s Dario Morello in Florence last September with a shutout points win, he then defended his belt for the first time against Freddy Kiwitt with another impressive unanimous decision victory at York Hall in December. ‘The Black Panther’ is determined to prove he is one of the brightest prospects in the country by handing a first loss to Bermondsey’s former Team GB amateur standout Kongo,

WHYTE VS POVETKIN

“THIS FIGHT HAS TO END IN A KNOCKOUT” who will also be looking to impress in his debut appearance as a Dillian Whyte fighter. “I’m excited to be on such a great show and I’m ready to fight,” said Clay. “2019 was a good year for me. I won the Title in Italy and then defended it against a good fighter. I celebrated that period but stayed focused. I was ready to fight Chris in March and I’m ready now. “It goes without saying, the better the opponent, the more you’re going to focus and the better your performance will be. I’m so happy to be fighting and making another

appearance on a big show. This is history, and I’m glad to be a part of it. These are the nights we work to be a part of. “I’m more excited about fighting someone that everyone rates because when I beat him, I will take that shine. There has been a lot of hype about him coming from Team GB. He’s a good boxer who is tall and rangy and well-skilled all round. I can’t really replicate a sixfoot Welterweight in sparring, it’s hard. We know what we’re facing, and we’re prepared. “It’s a challenge but one I’m really looking forward to. Him being confident is good but I’m coming to win this fight. I don’t care about his reputation; I’m coming to fight. Whatever he thinks doesn’t matter to me. I feel like I’m going to stop him. I don’t know how, and I don’t know what way, but it will happen, he will fold. This fight has to end in a knockout. Chris said that I’m a terrible finisher, but I’ve been working on that for him, and I’ll knock him out on Saturday.” ■

‘2SLICK’

KONGO

C

hris Kongo is planning on announcing himself on the big stage by “ripping” Luther Clay’s WBO Global Welterweight Title away from him in his first Sky Sports Box Office appearance. Bermondsey’s Kongo (11-0, 6 KOs), a former Team GB amateur, has found opportunities hard to come by since turning professional in August 2016, facing mostly foreign journeymen on the small hall scene, but ‘2Slick’ was finally handed a golden ticket after teaming up with Heavyweight contender Dillian Whyte earlier this year. Not short on confidence, the 27-yearold immediately targeted fights with Matchroom men Conor Benn and Josh Kelly, looking to propel his name to the top of the 147lbs domestic scene.

“IF HE WANTS TO BRING THE PRESSURE, TRUST ME, WE’RE GOING TO MEET HEAD ON” 16

AUGUST 22 2020 | WEEK 4 FIGHT CAMP

WHYTE VS POVETKIN

Kongo is determined to avenge the hotly disputed defeat he suffered to Rio Olympian Kelly in the ABA finals in 2013 but must first deal with the in-form Clay if he is to attract the attention of the division’s bigger names. “I took the fight straight away,” said Kongo. “I didn’t even have to think about it. I’ve been waiting for the opportunity and it’s here now, so I’m going to take it with both hands. It has been a long time coming. I’ve come up the hard way in the sport of boxing and there’s fire in my belly. I’m going to rip the belt from him. I’m not taking any chances. I’m not leaving it to the judges. We’re going to rip the belt off the champion. Guaranteed. “I believe I’m coming to take the title regardless of what Luther does. I believe this is my time. When it is someone’s time, it doesn’t matter what happens, you can’t stop it. I believe this

is the moment Chris Kongo is going to be announced as one of the top Welterweights in the division. I need to prove that I am the number one Welterweight in the country. I know my level. That’s why I believe I can be at the top table. “He’s going to try and bring the pressure because he thinks I’ll be rusty due to my time out of the ring. They’re going to be in for a big shock. They will try to put pressure on me and wait until the later rounds. It’s probably the worst thing they can do. We all know what kind of shape Jim McDonnell is going to have me in. “We know he’s not going to try and out skill me or outbox me because he can’t do that. His greatest attributes are always coming from the front foot. If he wants to bring the pressure, trust me, we’re going to meet head on. I’m a big Welterweight. I’ll be ready for that.”. ■

THE

SAVAGE

C

roatia’s explosive Heavyweight contender Alen Babic lit a fire under his clash with Shawndell Winters – and he’s ready to back up his fiery words with another big KO. Babic (3-0, 3 KOs) can enhance his growing reputation as ‘The Savage’ when he faces American Winters, and the 29-year-old has had the best possible preparation sparring with his manager and headline attraction Dillian Whyte in Portugal. The pair may only be fighting over eight rounds but there will be huge interest following a tense

18

press conference between the pair that almost spilled over – but now Babic wants to focus on the business at hand, proving that he can become a major force in the Heavyweight division. “There’s no way he doesn’t get KO’d by me,” said Babic. “I don’t want to sound too cocky, but I’m too good,

“THERE’S NO WAY I DON’T KO WINTERS!”

fast and strong for him. Joseph Parker did him in five rounds so I am going to try and do it in three or four rounds. “Shawndell, I will shut your mouth, first round. You’ll see. You’re slow, you’re easy. I am ready as ever. If I lost to Shawndell Winters I’d quit boxing. I’m in the best shape. You’re just a stepping stone for me. I’m going to knock you out. I’m never going to lose to you. Never. “This means a lot to me, to be on a big stage like this is huge, so many people will get to see me, they hadn’t heard of me before but now they will see me. “I am not here by accident, I trained for ten years for this, I’m ready now for everything so I don’t need to wait. Dillian is a very good manager and he understands that I don’t need ten easy fights to start with, I will just knock them out with in 50 seconds, it’s not worth it. “I know Shawndell is tough and that’s why I like it. My last three fights have been over fast, I know that Shawndell will come to beat me and that’s why I like this fight, we’re going to entertain the fans. It’s critical for me to put on a good show, not just beat him up and KO him, but to entertain. I want to show people that I know how to box too. “I love sparring with Dillian, it’s pure joy. I do my rounds with him and just enjoy it, we know what each other can do and we just go for it. He is harder with me in sparring than anyone else! I love that - I tell him to go all out because I am a sparring partner for him, so I want him to be at full power, I would be upset if he wasn’t, I’d have to punch him in the throat or something to make him angry!” ■

WINTERS IS COMING

H

eavyweight Shawndell Winters has told Alen Babic in no uncertain terms that he’s bitten off more than he can chew for just his fourth pro fight. Winters arrived from Chicago to meet the Dillian Whyte managed Babic at the final installment of Matchroom’s Fight Camp, and their eight round Heavyweight battle has become one of the most talked about fights on the card following a spicy press conference on Thursday. Babic has yet to hit the third round in his three fights to date, but Winters represents a huge step up in class, as the American enters the bout on the back of tackling former World champion Joseph Parker in Texas in February, and as the 39-year-old enters his 17th pro bout, he believes experience will be key. “He ain’t the first person in the gym or on the streets to say he’s gonna knock me out,” said Winters. “I’m still alive! Am I mad? No, he’s supposed to say that. They made a good mistake bringing me over here because it will propel me. When I beat him, when I show him how to fight, he will understand. I was 3-0 with three KOs once. I’m 13-3 now. I was where he was, I understand. I’m known for bringing the smoke! You’ve fought three cab drivers and never been hit by a punch.

21

“The integrity, the moral compass I have? If I say to a man ‘I will knock him out’ then when I see him, that’s my energy. He plans on coming forwards. That’s what I love. He’s a kickboxer, an MMA fighter. All he can do is come forwards. He doesn’t know anything about establishing a jab.” “I found out about the fight a while ago, but I knew it was a possibility and the reality is I’ve been in the gym. I don’t have a 9-to-5 job, this is my job, so I’ve been training all the time, so you are never going to pop up and catch me off guard, that’s never going to happen. “I expect him to come forward and try to do what he said, he wants

to KO me, so I expect him to come forward with pressure and throw a lot of punches, and try to break me down. He can expect me to bring my speed, fast hands, it’s different to be fast AND quick, and strong. That’s what he’s getting from me.” “I will fight King Kong or Godzilla. The Joseph Parker fight? I wasn’t 100 per cent. Babic will get a rude awakening. The reality is that I like to fight - that’s what I’m known for in Chicago. I was an 180lbs amateur beating up World champions in the gym in Chicago. I’ve got more knockouts than Babic has had fights! It will definitely be about the experience. My skills are certified. He thinks he will beat me but that ain’t gonna happen.” ■

MEAT CLEAVER

J

ack Cullen has moved up to Super-Middleweight to chase his dreams of winning British, European and World Titles – but must beat Zak Chelli to prove he belongs at 168lbs. Former English Middleweight Champion Cullen (18-2, 9 KOs) was involved in a thrilling toe-to-toe war with Fight Camp week three headliner Felix Cash at Manchester Arena in November last year, falling short in an explosive battle for the Commonwealth Title. Both men will be looking to impress on the big stage and kick on in a red-hot 168lbs domestic scene that contains the likes of British and Commonwealth Champion Lerrone Richards, No.2 rated WBO contender Zach Parker and heavy-handed Scot John Docherty.

“I’M BIGGER AND BETTER AT SUPERMIDDLEWEIGHT” 25

Cullen had been preparing to face Jason Quigley but has had to recalibrate to tackle game Londoner Chelli and knows that the clash is mustwin for his career, but that won’t mean he’ll take a backwards step, and he expects the fight to catch fire. “I think that this is the hardest I’ve ever trained,” said Cullen. “I was really excited about the Quigley fight but I think that there was talk about him being in the running for the Canelo Alvarez fight and any fighter is going to hold out for that as that’s the dream fight. He did what’s right for him and good luck to him, I’m just glad I’m fighting, I couldn’t be on a better show and Zak is a very good test. “I don’t feel under any pressure, I’ve got myself in great shape to fight and I just have to go out there and do what I do best. I’ve watched a lot of Zak, he’s a good tough lad who comes for a fight, and I’m the same - so it’s

going to be a belter. “He likes winging it in and he’ll think he’s the bigger man in the ring, but on fight night he’ll see how big I am. He’s going to have a big shock. Moving up to the weight I’m feeling bigger, better and stronger. I don’t just have to make weight, make weight, make weight “I think that the time is right to move up to Super-Middleweight. I still have to make weight, it’s not like I am putting weight on to make 168lbs, I’m like every boxer, I’ll be cutting weight and then refueling, and I’ll be more than a SuperMiddleweight in that ring, and he’ll feel that. It’s been good for me though as I’m not just concentrating on making weight, which is what happened in the last two fights, that’s all we were doing in the gym was making weight and not working on things to get the edge in the fight. It’s been totally different for this and I’ve benefited so much.” ■

ak Chelli says he’ll provide the fireworks on the last night of Fight Camp as he aims to KO Jack Cullen. Chelli stepped up to Light-Heavyweight in September to tackle the hotly-touted Kody Davies at York Hall, and more than threatened to upset the Welshman after putting him on the deck on the second round with an uppercut. The 22-year-old has no regrets stepping up in weight against Davies and believes that putting him over proves that he has power, and a punch that he’ll bring back down to 168lbs to put Cullen away in style inside the ten rounds and set up more big opportunities. “You’re going to see fireworks – knockout fireworks,” said Chelli. “As soon as the bell goes, I can test him out inside the first ten seconds and then we’ll know what to do, if it’s going to go the full ten or if it can go early, but I am planning to take him out. “I like his style because it suits mine, he likes to come for a war, and I like to hurt people and have a war too. “He’s had 21 fights but he’s not really fought anyone. I beat Umar Sadiq and he’s fought for the British Title, Kody is a former Team GB podium boxer, and I’ve boxed a lot of other guys with winning records. So even though I’ve had less fights, I think I have the better record and I know I have had better sparring

with Joshua Buatsi, George Groves and Chris Eubank Jr, and I’ve treated them more like learning fights. “I won the Southern Area Title at just 21 and was Mandatory for the English title after that but unfortunately due to COVID that never came. This opportunity came along and I’m the type of fighter to take opportunities with both hands. It’s a great platform too in the Matchroom Fight Camp on Sky Box Office, and one that I intend to make go well and open up even bigger chances for me. “I think I was right to take the Davies fight. I did drop him in there, but he was more of a Cruiserweight in there - I dropped a Cruiserweight in round two so imagine what I’ll do in this fight. Jack is not going to have the power of a true SuperMiddleweight, and especially not one like me that can put over Cruiserweights.” ■
