CEO NOTES

JOHN kATZ G

reetings, and welcome back to the Laithwaite Community Stadium for this evening’s matchup between your Cards and our visitors from Chesterfield. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I’d like to welcome the Board and supporters of Chesterfield to the Laithwaite. This match comes at a difficult time for the Cards, as Chesterfield is off to another impressive start under Paul Cook. This will be a challenging match for the boys, so let’s be sure to throw our support behind them. While we all hope for an instant response from the lads, we’re still a week or two away from being back to (almost) full strength. Jermaine

AHeaD OF THE GAME

Woking vs. Chesterfield Vanarama National League 21st November 2023 19:45 Kick-Off

Woking face the toughest challenge of their season yet when they welcome runaway leaders Chesterfield to the Laithwaite. After disappointment against Oldham on Saturday, hosting the Spireites, who also lost on Saturday at Southend, is set to be a tall order for Ian Dyer and his squad, who have just two wins in their last ten league games and no home win since August Bank Holiday. However, one positive was the debut for Alexis Andre Jr in goal on Saturday after Will Jaaskelainen was ruled out with illness, so he will be looking to back up an excellent performance with another one against the league's most potent attack, whilst Dyer might mix up the squad following the return of Sam Habergham and Timi Odusina to the bench against the Latics. AROUND THE GROUND Ticket pricing and other details are available here. The Club reminds supporters, in light of the forecasted weather, that pointed umbrellas are not permitted in the ground. Smaller, nonpointed umbrellas are.

OPPOSITION WATCH Following playoff heartbreak at Wembley, losing on penalties in the final to Notts County, the Spireites sought out to make the title theirs this season with a number of big signings. Tom Naylor joined from Wigan and the infamous Will Grigg came from MK Dons, and Naylor from midfield already has six goals, with Grigg having scored ten. Other signings included loanee Everton keeper Harry Tyrer, Ryan Boot from Solihull Moors, James Berry from Macclesfield for a six figure fee and Michael Jacobs from Portsmouth. However, their player of the season thus far is arguably Liam Mandeville, with the right winger also being deployed at right back by Paul Cook and scoring five so far this season whilst providing countless assists. No one has scored more than Chesterfield's 48 goals, and with eight players having contributed three or more, it's no wonder this team is flying at the top. Before Saturday's 2-1 loss at Southend, Chesterfield hadn't lost since the 26th August, and they've won 15 of their 19 league games, drawing two. They have the best away form in the league with 22 points from 10 away games so far, so it will be a tall order for the Cards to break their own duck at home. LAST TIME OUT A penalty from Ollie Banks gave the Spireites all three points at the Laithwaite in March, as they would eventually pip Woking to third place. However, the reverse fixture in early February was a memorable one for the Cards, as goals from Padraig Amond, James Daly and Jim Kellermann secured a 3-1 win in Derbyshire. The sides have played each other seven times, with Woking winning three, Chesterfield winning three and one draw.

A HISTORY OF MANY CHANGES At least five teams have been called Chesterfield. An 1864 newspaper reported a game between ‘Chesterfield and Norton’. Chesterfield FC was created as an offshoot of Chesterfield Cricket Club in October 1867. Both clubs played at Saltergate from 1871. However, a souring of the relationship led to the closure of the football club in 1881. In 1884 another Chesterfield FC was formed, again playing at Saltergate. As Chesterfield Town the club turned professional in 1891 and entered the FA Cup in 1892. For 1892–93 the club wore a strip of dark blue with a Union Jack across the shirt! Chesterfield joined the Midland League in 1896, and moved to the Second Division of the Football League at the start of 1899–1900, finishing seventh. After finishing bottom three years in a row, the club failed to gain re-election in 1909 and returned to the Midland League, becoming champions in 1909–10.

The club was liquidated in 1915, but reformed as Chesterfield Municipal in April 1919. They re-joined the Midland League and finished as champions in 1919–20. STABILITY AT LAST The club was renamed Chesterfield FC in December 1920, and became founder members of the Third Division North in 1921–22. They marked 1930–31 by winning the title, but only managed two seasons in the Second Division before relegation. They won the Third Division North title in 1935–36. However, they were relegated again in 1950–51. Future England international goalkeeper Gordon Banks made his professional debut for them in November 1958. The Spireites were relegated from the Third Division in 1960–61, but won the Fourth Division in 1969–70, and the AngloScottish Cup in 1980. After relegation in 1982–83,

they again won the Fourth Division in 1984–85, but were relegated after five seasons. They returned with a win in the 1995 play-offs, earning promotion to the redesignated Second Division. The 1996-97 season saw Chesterfield beat six clubs including Premier League side Nottingham Forest to reach the semi-final of the FA Cup for the first time. The semi-final match against Middlesbrough was contentiously drawn 3-3 after extra time; Chesterfield lost the replay 3-0. RELEGATION FROM THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE The Spireites were relegated in 1999–2000 and made an immediate return, but they were relegated again in 2006–07. The club departed Saltergate at the end of 2009–10, and moved to the new B2net Stadium. They won League Two in 2010–11, but were relegated the following season. In 2011, Dave Allen took ownership and oversaw two League Trophy finals; winning in 2012 and running-up in 2014. The ground was renamed the Proact Stadium in 2012 (now the Technique Stadium).

Chesterfield were champions of League Two in 2013–14 but remained in League One for just three seasons. Two consecutive relegations saw the club drop to the National League at the end of the 2017–18 season, falling three years short of what would have been a centenary in the Football League. PLAY-OFF CAMPAIGNS In August 2020, Chesterfield FC Community Trust bought the club from Allen, after the Spireites had narrowly avoided relegation, finishing in 20th position. In the 2020-21 season they finished 6th but lost to Notts County in their play-off Quarter-Final. In 2021-22 they finished 7th but lost to Solihull Moors in their play-off Semi-Final. Last season saw a 3rd place finish, but defeat on penalties (having led for a large part of the game), to Notts County in the playoff final.

MANAGER PAUL COOK

ONE TO WATCH OLLIE BANKS

Previous Clubs: Southport, Sligo Rovers, Accrington Stanley, Chesterfield, Portsmouth, Wigan Athletic, Ipswich Town

Position: Midfielder Previous Clubs: FC United of Manchester, Chesterfield, Oldham Athletic, Tranmere Rovers (loan), Swindon Town (loan), Tranmere Rovers, Barrow

Paul returned to the club for a second spell in February 2022, seven years after leaving to take charge at Portsmouth. During his first stint with the Spireites, Cook guided the club to the League Two title and the League One play-offs. After two years at Portsmouth, during which time they won the League Two title, Cook was named manager of Wigan Athletic. Three years with Wigan included a League One title win. He later had a nine-month spell with Ipswich Town, which ended in December 2021. In his time at Sligo Rovers he managed Pádraig Amond, and in the 2021-22 season he managed Jim Kellermann. As a player, Cook was a creative midfielder who played for various clubs including Wigan Athletic, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Coventry City and Burnley. After an impressive start to last season which saw Chesterfield sitting top of the league at the end of the first month, and Cook awarded the National League Manager of the Month award for his efforts, the Spireites finished 3rd, only to be defeated on penalties by Notts County in the playoff final. This season Cook has his team on course for automatic promotion, sitting top of the league after a recent run of five straight wins, including victory over closest rivals Barnet. As well as being on an FA Cup run which has seen them knock out League One leaders Portsmouth.

22

wokingfc.co.uk

Banks rejoined Chesterfield in the summer of 2022 after leaving Barrow. In his first spell at the club, he was instrumental in helping Chesterfield win the 2013/14 League Two title, as well as reaching the 2013/14 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final and the 2014/15 League One play-offs. Banks joined Oldham Athletic in a spell that lasted two years – including loans at Tranmere Rovers and Swindon Town. He joined the former on a permanent basis in 2018 and helped Rovers win promotion from League Two via the play-offs in 2018/19. Banks moved to Barrow in 2021 and was handed the captain’s armband, playing a big part in helping Barrow secure their League Two status for the 2022/23 season. Ollie was named as the Vanarama National League Player of the Month for October. The midfielder helped the Spireites win all five matches played during the month, scoring four goals in the process. Commenting on his award, Ollie said: “I wasn’t expecting it, to be honest. It’s been a while since I’ve won something like this. It’s always good to get recognised for doing well. The team is flying as well so we’re in a good position at the moment.”

Chesterfield Drop Out of Football League In 2018, just three years short of their centenary of being a member of the Football League, the Spireites were relegated, along with Barnet. Hostilities with Woking did not commence for another year, as unfortunately Woking were relegated from the National League that same season. As Chesterfield stabilised in mid-table, Woking gained promotion at the first attempt. In 2019/20, top of the table Woking started the season with seven wins from eight games, the third of which occurred at the Proact Stadium. Two contrasting second half goals put Woking in control, Ibrahim Meite stumbled and backheeled the opener whilst looking the other way, not knowing where the ball was. Then eight minutes later, Dave Tarpey ‘unleashed a sumptuous, curling’ free kick, which floated over the wall and into the top corner of Jalal’s goal. The deficit was halved five minutes from time, when Scott Boden rose to head home a cross from the right. The Cards held on to extend John Sheridan’s winless start to the season. Unfortunately, the return game was not played, as the season was curtailed due to Covid. Chesterfield only just survived the drop, as Woking missed out on the play-offs after a defeat in their last match, against Barnet.

Behind Closed Doors The 2020/21 season was played behind closed doors, and again Alan Dowson’s side travelled to Derbyshire early in the season. “We have the unusual situation of supporters being in the hospitality lounges at the stadium, watching the match on the screens via a live stream.” It was all change at the Technique Stadium, with the Club’s ownership changing two months earlier, John Pemberton had replaced Sheridan as Manager, and his side took an early lead through ex-Card Tom Denton. Despite that Woking dominated large parts of the game without being able to score. On 81 minutes Dowse ‘rolled the dice’ with an attacking change but it backfired. The Spireites took advantage of defensive gaps to score three late goals and put a gloss on the scoreline. At the other end of the season, with the announcement of no relegation, Woking were on an unwanted Club record run. For the eleventh of fifteen winless matches Chesterfield visited Kingfield for the first time, with yet another Manager in James Rowe. In contrast, the Spireites were chasing a play-off place, and again scored an early goal, from captain Gavin Cunning. This was followed by a second from Dinanga. Charlie Cooper reduced the arrears with a penalty,

wokingfc.co.uk

before Malachi Napa found himself through one-on-one, with the chance to equalise but dragged his shot wide. At the other end Dinanga did likewise before George Carline gave the visitors some breathing space. Jack Clarke scored a late fourth, as Chesterfield qualified for the play-offs but defeat at Notts County ended the promotion dream. Woking Go Full-Time In the Summer of 2021, Woking became full-time, thanks to the backing from Americans Final Third Sport. This time, undefeated Chesterfield had to travel south to Surrey for the early season encounter. Yet again there was an early goal, with Saidu Khan looping a cheeky shot from inside his own half, catching Craig Ross off his line. Tahvon Campbell then showed the ability that earned him a move to the Football League; First he sprinted through the Spireites defence to equalise midway through the second half, then his sixth goal of the season put the Cards ahead with three minutes remaining. There was still time for Inih Effiong to complete the scoring from close range, as Woking completed their best run of the season.

Early goals have been a feature of this fixture and Pádraig Amond and James Daly duly obliged again, as the Cards were two up within seven minutes. The Spireites then came into the game only to be denied by Woking’s defending. A Covolan error ended with Jim Kellermann heading in a third before half-time. Just four minutes after the break, a bullet of a strike from Liam Mandeville reduced the arrears and lifted the home crowd. However, Woking saw out the match to increase their claim on the important third place position, in pursuit of a first-ever playoff spot. The return on 18th March presented Woking with the opportunity to tighten their grip on third place, but Chesterfield came away with three points that were to be significant in the final standings. Chesterfield’s goal, after 37 minutes, came from the penalty spot, Ollie Banks converting following a foul by Jim Kellermann. Things may have been different if Amond’s lobbed goal had not been wrongly disallowed for offside, but it was Chesterfield’s players who were celebrating come the final whistle. Previous Meetings

This high point was followed by more disappointment, that eventually cost Dowson his job. Darren Sarll was appointed as his replacement, and he took an improving side to the Technique Stadium for the final game of the season. Rowe had been dismissed and replaced by Paul Cook, and his side only needed a point to qualify for the play-offs for a second time. A goalless draw was duly played out, with Jim Kellermann playing against the club he would move to in the summer, and after overcoming Halifax, Solihull prevented a place at the London Stadium Final. Last Season Darren Sarll’s new look squad were jostling with Chesterfield for third place when they visited Derbyshire in February 2023, and they produced arguably their best performance of the season.

HIDDEN DISABILITY INITIATIVE

SUNFloWER laNYARDS

W

There will be a stall within the Fan Zone for supporters to access further information about the programme, raise awareness, and ask any questions.

Globally, one in six of us live with a disability. Whilst some disabilities are visible, many have non-visible disabilities that are not immediately apparent to others; the most widely known being Dementia or Alzheimer’s.

The Cards Trust has kindly provided 100 sunflower lanyards that will be made available free of charge to any supporters or their carers that request one, to help encourage inclusivity, acceptance and understanding. The lanyards will first be available within the Fan Zone and then from the club shop and reception.

Without a visual cue, it can be difficult for others to identify, acknowledge, or understand the daily barriers faced by people living with an invisible disability. For some people, this can make it hard to understand and believe that someone with a non-visible disability or condition genuinely needs support.

A sunflower suggests happiness, positivity, and strength as well as growth and confidence. The lanyards are universally known and supporters will already be aware of their promotion at airports, railway stations, shopping centres and more.

oking Football Club is proud to announce the launch of a hidden disability initiative for matchdays at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.

WOMEN'S REPORT

SENSATIONAL SEcoND HALF SENDS caRDS THroUGH IN cAPITAL CUP

A

second-half comeback from Woking saw them progress into the Third Round of the Capital Women’s Cup. Goals from Gracie Price, Helen Ogle, Sheena Nichol and a brace from Trudy Bryan-Kerr helped convert a two-goal deficit at half time into a dramatic late win. It took a while for the first real chance of the game to fall to either team but eventually, ten minutes into the game, Welling had that opportunity and would have been disappointed not to have scored after they smashed the underside of the crossbar from just a few yards out. Just five minutes later though, they made their second chance count and took the lead when a powerful shot from just inside the box beat Amy Jenkins in goal. The hosts didn’t stop there either as straight away from the restart, they won possession back and made it two after squaring the ball across goal for the striker to tap in. Fran Cotter was clearly barged off the ball in the build-up to the second goal, but the referee waived the claim away and within the space of a minute, the Cards found themselves two goals behind, just under 20 minutes into the game.

It took 21 minutes for Woking to register their first major attack on goal as Efrosyni Theocharous managed to get a shot off in a tight area, but the ball went over the crossbar. Sheena was next to have an effort and this time tested the goalkeeper with a low-driven shot, but it was pushed away from danger. Woking continued to find more space in the final third towards the end of the half but wasn’t able to finish off any of their chances, the first of two major threats coming from Sheena working her way into the box well and finding Trudy, but the former's effort went wide and then Bianca Underhill finding Helen with a great cross, but the number seven headed just wide. HT: Welling United 2-0 Woking Anthony Rosenberg-Murray made three changes at the break, replacing Sian Hardaker, Sophie Burgess and Bianca for Kaitlin Howard, Amy Richards and Gracie. It only took two minutes into the second half for the visitor's first chance as Kaitlin did well down the right-hand side but was desperately unlucky to see her eventual shot rattle against the post.

It was all Woking, with Amy.J not having much work to do in the second 45 minutes, but yet the away side couldn’t find a way to break Welling’s defence. On the occasion where they did, Helen could only find the side netting after going on a great solo run down the left-hand side. But on the stroke of an hour, the Cards pulled a goal back thanks to substitute Gracie after she got on the end of a scrappy clearance in the box to tap home and get her team back into the game. It was the young 16-year-old's first goal of the season.

The first of the two came from a brilliant run down the left-hand side from Helen.O finding Gaby whose first-time pass was into the feet of Trudy to tap home in a well-made team goal. The second was then a little less magnificent to the eye as Trudy’s shot towards goal took a deflection and the bounce caught the defenders off guard before an attempted clearance was actually kicked into the back of the net. With the initial shot being on target, Trudy ran away in celebration and claimed her second goal in the space of three minutes. FT: Welling United 2-5 Woking

In the 72nd minute, Helen Brown came on to make her debut for the club, replacing Laura Mitchell in defence. Directly from that substitution, a throw-in down the right was intercepted by Sheena who then only took a handful of touches before playing a beautiful pass in behind the Welling defence to Helen.O who chopped back onto her right foot and fired the ball into the bottom left-hand corner. That’s now nine goals in nine games for her. The confidence these two goals had given the team had clearly shown and it was nearly three when the team countered well and created a shooting opportunity, but Gaby Hobday’s effort was well saved by the ‘keeper. With the clock ticking down, it did at one point look as though the game would be going to penalty kicks, but that was before what can only be described as a dominant eight-minute period. In the 90th minute, a fantastic, floated corner from Gaby found the head of Sheena who nodded the ball home to send the team and everyone on the sidelines into jubilation. It had seemed at that point that she had won the game there and then for her side, but two more goals followed in injury time.

42

wokingfc.co.uk

The never-say-die attitude of the team to go from two goals down at the break, then get back on level terms and not settle for penalties and then not sit on a one-goal lead either, is quite simply a huge credit to these players. At no point did they look to give up and played the game to the very last whistle. That’s now seven games unbeaten in all competitions and a place in the next round of the Capital Cup. Attention will now turn to next Sunday’s Southern Region Women’s Football League Division One South fixture against Rushmoor Community, away from home. Woking Starting XI: Jenkins, Burgess (46), Cotter ©, Mitchell (72) (90+6), Underhill (46), Theocharous, Nichol, Hardaker (46), Hobday (90+6), Ogle, Bryan-Kerr Subs: Howard (46), Richards (46), Price (46), Brown (72) Attendance: 19 Player of the Match: Amy Richards

AcaDEMY T

Notable academy graduates in recent history include Woking legends Craig Ross and Joe McNerney, Wrexham's Ollie Palmer, and exChelsea and now-Reading's Jayden Wareham.

For the 2023/24 season, the youth and academy setup runs in three stages; a pre-academy for six to nine-year-olds, a youth academy for nine to 16-year-olds, and a full-time academy for talented young players above the age of 16, including an education plan.

PRE-ACADEMY The Pre-Academy is for the very youngest players, covering U7s, U8s and U9s. Meeting once a week, players train and learn in a fun and friendly environment under the watchful eye of our coaches. Players that show real talent have the opportunity to progress to Woking FC Academy Youth.

he Woking FC Academy has been operating in its current format for over a decade with the aim of helping talented young footballers make progress into the club's first team set up or in their sporting careers whilst continuing with their academic studies.

The Academy works with the Football Club's partner charitable and community organisation, Cardinals in the Community (CITC).

The Pre-Academy trains at The Winston Churchill School in Woking, Thursdays, 17:00 - 18:00.

YOUTH ACADEMY Starting with U9s and progressing through the age groups right up to U16s, players train with our Academy coaches and have the opportunity to play competitively in the Junior Premier League. Training is held twice weekly at CITC’s sports hub, within the grounds of Woking College, and matches are played on Saturdays. At this level, players are able to continue playing for their grassroots clubs. As with the main Academy, players receive a progress report twice per season, which helps identify areas of their game to work on and improve. U16s players are assessed throughout the season with a view to being invited to join Woking FC Academy. WOKING FC ACADEMY Woking FC Academy is a National League licensed academy. We aim to develop each and every player to reach their full potential, instilling ambition and a professional attitude. We work as closely as possible to Category 3 Academy standards, creating a professional environment in which players thrive. Players train 5-6 hours per week at CITC’s sports hub. Their development is supported by video analysis of training and matches, group workshops and strength and conditioning sessions. One-to-one reviews are held twice every season, along with player reports so that both the coaching staff and the players themselves have a clear focus on individual development. Woking FC Academy plays competitive matches in the U18 Isthmian League, U19 National League and also have the opportunity to play in U23 fixtures. Players in our Elite Development Plan (EDP) compete in the Tactic League and National B League. Cup competitions are a feature of the fixture calendar. Pre-season training includes friendlies and there are opportunities to travel abroad for football tours and tournaments, including the Gothia Cup. Our football timetable is planned in conjunction with players’ education. Academy players can
