JOHN kATZ G

reetings, and welcome back to the Laithwaite Community Stadium for this evening’s matchup between your Cards and our visitors from Hemel Hempstead in the replay of Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round tie that finished level at 0-0. We welcome our visiting supporters and hope they enjoy the match. Should this evening’s score be level at full-time, there will be Extra Time and the potential for penalties to decide who will face Ramsgate away in the First Round Proper.

"It will be a big lift to the side this evening to have the likes of Rhys Browne and Charlie Wakefield available for selection, providing fresh attacking options at the gaffer’s disposal."

"For the first time in a long while, Darren will have real selection issues on his hands – a “problem” we’ve been hoping to have since August.

As we look ahead to Saturday, Alife Pavey returns to the fold as he was cup-tied to Farnborough, along with Lewis Walker, Timi Odusina and Zak Bradshaw. For the first time in a long while, Darren will have real selection issues on his hands – a “problem” we’ve been hoping to have since August.

The England vs Italy match will be on in the Cardinals Bar and in the Geoff Chapple Lounge, so be sure to pop in at half-time for a pint and a break from the cool weather outside. Thanks for your continued support. As always, it means the world to our entire Club.

AHeaD OF THE GAME The winner of this game pockets £9,375 with that going up to £41,000 for the winner of the first round tie, so along with the prestige of playing in the proper competition, there is a chance to make some serious money, as the Cards found out on their run to the third round in 2018/19.

Woking vs. Hemel Hempstead Vanarama National League 17th October 2023 19:45 Kick-Off

Woking will hope to progress to the First Round Proper of the FA Cup on Tuesday night when they host Hemel Hempstead Town in a fourth qualifying round replay. After nothing could separate the two sides on Saturday at Vauxhall Road, Darren Sarll will hope that his side can break their home form hoodoo; Woking are winless at the Laithwaite since late August. The Cards have made the first round in five of the last seven seasons, whilst their opponents haven't made it in nine seasons. OPPOSITION WATCH Bobby Quinton's side were excellent on Saturday, and their man of the match Kyle Ajayi; a 23 year old defender who combines football with a career in engineering will be hoping to help shut out the Woking attack once again. It should also be noted that the Tudors are now unbeaten in 10 games across league and cup, as they look to join the three National League South sides already through to the first round.

POTENTIAL FIRST ROUND TIE The victors of Tuesday night's replay will be rewarded with a trip to Ramsgate on the weekend of November 3rd. The Rams, who are currently 14th in the Isthmian League South East division, could be the lowest ranked side left in the draw should Sheppey United fail to beat Billericay in their replay, but amazingly both Ramsgate and Sheppey have played just three league games this season. Ramsgate have actually played 14 games in all competitions so far this season, and will have at least seven games in hand on some teams in their own division by the time the first round is complete, with Ben Smith's side also still in the FA Trophy, where ironically they beat Sheppey in the third qualifying round. Having already won six games to get to the first round, it's an incredible achievement for the side along the Kent coast, and they will be a tough opponent for either the Cards or Tudors. AROUND THE GROUND Ticket details are available here. It has been agreed that home supporters will be allowed to migrate from stand to stand during the match, but the Club reserves the right to cap capacity in the MKJ Kingfield Road End.

www.hemelfc.com THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ROUND The FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round is like a semifinal for non-league teams, you are so close to a potential money spinning, possibly televised, game that the pain of losing in this round becomes acute. Seven of Kingfield’s top ten attendances have come in the FA Cup, although it is the prize money and the television money that is more important these days. “There is no business I know of that can plan for absorbing a full year’s trading loss in the blink of an eye, or can resolve years of poor trading, then move into substantial profit with the pulling out of a numbered ball from a hat!” Phil Wallace, Chairman of Stevenage, 2004. It is the round that Woking appeared in on very few occasions up until 1998, primarily because of being knocked out in earlier rounds, but also because of byes to the first round, such as in 1959 after winning the FA Amateur Cup. That all changed from 1998

when most of the Conference National clubs joined the competition at the 4th Qualifying Round stage, rather than the first round, following Stevenage’s debacle with Newcastle United. EARLY YEARS Woking first entered the FA Cup in 1903 and their first appearance in the 4th Qualifying Round came shortly afterwards in 1907, during the famous cup run when the Cremators/Cardinals played Bolton Wanderers, securing the club’s future in the process. The 4th Qualifying Round game was away to Maidstone, with Woking winning 2-1 in front of 1,100 spectators. It took another nineteen years to reach this round again, when Leytonstone were drawn to visit Woking in 1926. Again, the round was won, this time 3-0 and Woking went on to play at Charlton Athletic, in front of 5,593 fans, losing 1-3 in the 1st Round.

Two seasons later, in 1928, Woking were given a bye to the 4th Qualifying Round for reasons unknown. The Cards won away at Tooting Town in front of 2,000 people, to set up a 1st Round tie in Newport which finished 0-7!

followed up at Wexham Park, in Tommy Trantor’s 50th game in charge, with a single goal victory for the Cards, scored by ex-Rebel Steve Hill. In the next round, Wimbledon managed to get their revenge with a single goal victory at Plough Lane.

THE YEARS GO BY A whole generation then passed before Woking reached the 4th Qualifying Round again. Fast forward a long, forty years to 1968 and Woking’s reward for beating Crawley, Addlestone and Wokingham was a tough trip to Plough Lane, Wimbledon. A club that had switched to the more professional Southern League from the amateur Isthmian League four years earlier. Against the odds, Woking put on a ‘tremendous performance’ and won 2-0 in front of 2,346 spectators. “Wimbledon could only resort to kick and rush desperation tactics.” Woking went on to lose 0-2 at Brentford in the next round. Shortly after semi-professionalism replaced the amateur game, the Cards again progressed through three rounds in 1976, to be drawn at home to Slough Town. An initial goalless draw was

FAMOUS MEMORIES Just two years later in 1978, Fred Callaghan took his successful Woking team to Margate for the 4th Qualifying Round and absolutely blew the hosts away 7-1, with hat-tricks for Alan Morton and Eggie James and another goal from Dave Alexander. The attendance was 1,092, including three coachloads of Woking supporters. This was of course the year that Woking beat Barnet, with Jimmy Greaves in their team, and then took high flying Swansea to extra time in a replay. An undefeated, six wins and a draw out of seven matches in the 4th Qualifying Round was ended the following season, when in 1979, Wealdstone, of the new Alliance Premier League, were drawn to host the Cards, ‘and after a poor performance’ Woking ‘were eliminated from the competition thanks to a goal midway through the first half.’

22

wokingfc.co.uk

EIGHTIES PROMISE Financial difficulties meant that Woking did not win through to this round again until 1986, when Geoff Chapple’s resurgent team excelled themselves by hosting, and beating, Conference side Weymouth, including past and future Card, Tom Jones. In goal for Woking that day was Chelsea legend Peter Bonetti. A late Mark Dawber goal, from 20 yards sent the 1,029 crowd ‘wild with delight’. Southern League Chelmsford City ended Woking’s run in the next round after a replay. Chapple was honing his cup talents again in 1988, when Woking were drawn to travel to the coast again, this time to Western League Exmouth in Devon. The hosts shocked the 937 attendees by taking an early lead in the 4th minute, and held on for half an hour, before “a bit of Tim Buzaglo magic down the right flank set up Mark Davis”. Further goals from Adie Cowler, Richard Buzaglo and a brace from his brother, Tim, saw Woking cruise through 5-1. Cambridge United, including a young Dion Dublin, were then to visit Kingfield and dish out a footballing lesson to the Surrey upstarts. Woking were on a run again the next year, 1989, when the Cards made the short trip to Berkshire to face Wokingham Town. At the time Wokingham were a division higher, in the Isthmian League Premier Division and were riding high in second place. As per the form guide the hosts took a first half lead, but shortly afterwards Gary Hall struck the equaliser. A few minutes before half-time a Tim Buzaglo crossshot “was slid home from a yard” by Stuart Mitchell. Woking sealed victory in the last minute with another Buzaglo goal. The attendance was 1,084, including approximately 400 from Woking. Woking made it past the 1st Round for the second time, before Cambridge United repeated the fate of the previous season, this time at The Abbey Stadium.

23

wokingfc.co.uk

THE MOST FAMOUS CUP-RUN Woking entered the competition at the 4th Qualifying Round stage for only the second time in 1990. A tough home draw against Conference side Bath City was played in front of 2,029 fans. In fact, only one place separated the clubs as Bath were bottom of the Conference and Woking were top of the Isthmian League Premier Division. Woking took a first half lead through Lloyd Wye. This lead was doubled in the second half by Dereck Brown, before a late goal from Bath set up an anxious last ten minutes. This of course was the first of seven games in the competition that season, culminating in the 4th Round game at Goodison Park, in front of 34,724 fans, which changed the club for good. Owing to these exploits Woking were given a bye to the 1st Round the following year. Promotion to the Conference and FA Trophy wins then meant byes to the 1st Round were granted subsequently for the following six years. Woking next had to qualify in 1998, again entering the competition at the final qualifying round stage. The Cards were drawn away to neighbours Aldershot Town, the long awaited, first competitive match, between the two sides since the Hampshire club’s re-birth. Woking were coming down from their peak years but were still a division above the Shots. A whopping 6,870 fans watched a stalemate in atrocious conditions at The Recreation Ground. Brian McDermott’s team triumphed in the replay at Kingfield, in front of 3,896, but only after Gary Abbott had put the Shots ahead. A second half fight back followed with goals from Scott Steele and Darren Hay winning the tie for Woking. Scunthorpe visited Kingfield in round one and narrowly won 1-0 to end another year’s interest in the cup. THE TURN OF THE CENTURY Conference teams were now regularly entering the competition at the 4th Qualifying Round stage and in 1999, Nigel Clough had developed one of the best teams outside of the Conference. His Burton Albion team came to Kingfield for the first time and had to settle for a 1-1 draw. Woking travelled to

wokingfc.co.uk

23

after a replay, on the way to a comprehensive 2nd Round defeat at home to Football League Kidderminster. 2004 saw Wessex League part-timers Lymington & New Milton hold Woking to a replay before bravely bowing out. The other Thurrock team were soundly beaten in 2005 but Woking missed out on a plum draw with Sunderland by losing to Northwich Victoria in round two.

Eton Park for the replay, still slight favourites, but after Darren Hay had pulled Woking level, on the hour, his penalty miss proved costly. Burton went on to score two late goals in extra-time against the ten-man Cards, to book a home tie with Rochdale. Woking were out at this stage for only the second time. In 2000, Colin Lippiatt’s team ‘produced a thrilling cup tie’ against Hereford United. ‘Both teams showed tremendous commitment and passion in difficult conditions.’ Jamie Pitman ‘scored an excellent, well worked goal’ in a 1-0 win. Carlisle away was the prize but the Cards whimpered out. In 2001, Woking’s lack of progress against Newport County, 0-0 and 1-3 in the replay, brought about Colin Lippiatt’s immediate resignation as manager. He stated, “I was deeply hurt and frustrated by the fact we were knocked out of the FA Cup. Following subsequent conversations, I have decided to stand down from my position of Manager of Woking Football Club.” MIXED FORTUNES CONTINUE A year later, in 2002 and Glenn Cockerill’s Woking team did well to earn a draw at Clive Walker’s (not that one!) Dover Athletic but lost the home replay to exit at this stage for a fourth time. In 2003 East Thurrock were beaten

24

wokingfc.co.uk

Subsequently, at this stage of the FA Cup, Woking beat Potters Bar Town, Hendon, Eastleigh and Boreham Wood but also lost to Staines Town, Ebbsfleet Utd (twice), Luton Town, Maidenhead, and only failed to make this round in once, in 2011, with a 3rd Qualifying round exit, again at Maidenhead, as a Conference South team. Despite a valiant attempt against League One leaders Brighton in 2010, Woking had not made it past the 1st Round for thirteen years, Garry Hill having a particularly poor record in the competition. Hill’s best run came in his last season, a home replay win against Torquay in 2016 and a fortuitous 1st Round win at Stockport was frustratingly ended, at home to a professional Accrington side in the 2nd Round. The FA Cup was the highlight of Anthony Limbrick’s only season in charge. A hard-fought replay win at Concord Rangers in the 4th Qualifying Round paved the way for memorable matches against Football League sides Bury and Peterborough. ExCard Jack Marriott helped to dump his old side out of the cup before the season went south. RECENT DREAMS DASHED Relegation meant that Alan Dowson was tasked with starting at the 2nd Qualifying Round stage. Wins over Tooting and Kempston Rovers meant a seventh consecutive match at this stage of the competition. A typically narrow victory over Steve King’s Welling followed. Of the twelve wins at this stage since 1998, only the Welling victory led to a

real money-spinning tie. Two further one goal victories at Torquay and Swindon finally saw Woking into the 3rd Round for the first time in a generation. Premier League Watford ensured the coffers were swelled and aided the Cards’ promotion attempt. There were high hopes of repeating the previous season’s heroics when rock bottom Ebbsfleet were drawn out of the hat in 2019, but only a late equaliser saw the Cards survive at a ground where they have never won. Garry Hill had been dismissed from Stonebridge Road only a week earlier, and an improving ‘Fleet side knocked Woking out of the cup at this stage for the third time in a disappointing replay. 2020 ironically saw the Cards drawn at neighbours Aldershot, twenty-two years after previously meeting at this stage. Normally a money-spinning match, but this time it had to be played behind closed doors. As before, it was Aldershot who took the lead, but as before, it was Woking who prevailed with two subsequent goals, setting up a 1st Round match at League One Gillingham where a two-goal lead was given up.

The defeat at Isthmian League Horsham, in October 2021, was particularly disappointing as the crowds had returned, and Woking had become a fulltime professional outfit. A stadium record, sell-out 1,972 fans watched an unlikely upset, as the Cards squandered numerous chances. That disappointing result went a long way to costing Dowson his job just four months later. Last season brought Southend United to Kingfield on 15th October. A fine Pádraig Amond free kick, his first goal for the club, opened the scoring, before former card Jake Hyde levelled shortly before half-time. Woking’s 82nd minute winner came from another player netting his first for the club – Ricky Korboa. Sadly, Woking were to be knocked-out in the next round, going down 1-2 at home against League One side Oxford United. On the thirty-five occasions that Woking have competed in the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup they have won through to the 1st Round on twenty-three occasions, so there is good reason to hope that the pulling of a numbered ball from a hat can aid Woking to “move into substantial profit” and contribute to the advancement of the club as it has in the past.

HIDDEN DISABILITY INITIATIVE

SUNFloWER laNYARDS

W

oking Football Club is proud to announce the launch of a hidden disability initiative for matchdays at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.

There will be a stall within the Fan Zone at this Saturday's fixture against Solihull Moors for supporters to access further information about the programme, raise awareness, and ask any questions.

Globally, one in six of us live with a disability. Whilst some disabilities are visible, many have non-visible disabilities that are not immediately apparent to others; the most widely known being Dementia or Alzheimer’s.

The Cards Trust has kindly provided 100 sunflower lanyards that will be made available free of charge to any supporters or their carers that request one, to help encourage inclusivity, acceptance and understanding. The lanyards will first be available within the Fan Zone and then from the club shop and reception.

Without a visual cue, it can be difficult for others to identify, acknowledge, or understand the daily barriers faced by people living with an invisible disability. For some people, this can make it hard to understand and believe that someone with a non-visible disability or condition genuinely needs support.

A sunflower suggests happiness, positivity, and strength as well as growth and confidence. The lanyards are universally known and supporters will already be aware of their promotion at airports, railway stations, shopping centres and more.
