Oldham Athletic was one of the 22 founding clubs of the Premier League in 1992. Of the original 22 members, only six clubs have not dropped down into the football pyramid: Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Everton and Arsenal. Jimmy Greaves, a legend of both Tottenham and England, once said “football is a funny old game.” A bounce here or there. The rub of the green. A couple of results go your way. An injury. Several injuries. Any or all of these things happening together can turn a season.

Today, we return to the business at hand, which is getting results. A tough task this week for the lads as we see an improved Oldham side today and the league leaders in Chesterfield on Tuesday. As we approach next week, we anticipate the return to training and indeed matchday squads for some of our injured players which we believe will help our form and consistency improve, along with a bit of the swagger that Woking FC is known for.

Woking vs. Oldham Athletic Vanarama National League 18th November 2023 15:00 Kick-Off Woking will hope to finally end their winless run at home when they welcome Oldham Athletic to the Laithwaite on Saturday. After the news that Darren Sarll was relieved of his duties as manager on Monday, Ian Dyer will take charge of the team to take on the Latics, the first time he's been the main man in the dugout since March 2022. His record as caretaker was impressive, registering three wins, a draw and two losses with four clean sheets, and he'll be hoping that more of that is to come. Reece Grego-Cox returned to the squad defeated by Oxford City, and came off the bench in a positive sign, whilst other injury news will be eagerly awaited ahead of Saturday. OPPOSITION WATCH After an excellent second half to last season under David Unsworth saw Oldham finish in a comfortable 12th position, hopes were high going into the new season, with the Latics considered title challengers following some impressive signings such as the prolific James Norwood from Barnsley, centre half Shaun

However, after just one win in nine games, and following a 3-0 hammering at Bromley, Unsworth departed, and in came another big appointment in Micky Mellon. But since the successful former Tranmere manager arrived at Boundary Park, the Latics have just one league win in four games, also being eliminated by Newport County in the FA Cup. Norwood so far this season has scored 7 in 18 games, scoring two in Mellon's first four, whilst experienced midfielder Brennan Dickenson has 5 in 15 games; the former Carlisle man has already registered a couple of goal of the season contenders as well. All of this ultimately means that the Latics sit two points and four places above the Cards in 10th, having won five, lost five and drawn nine thus far. They've scored 27 but conceded 28, with 10 scored away from home and 18 conceded, picking up 10 points from their 9 away games. LAST TIME OUT A dramatic Nathan Sheron injury time winner gave Oldham all three points at Boundary Park on a freezing cold Tuesday night in March, as the Latics were 1-0 victors. Before that, the reverse fixture saw Woking win 3-0 at the Laithwaite in September, two goals for Tyreke Johnson either side of a goal for Luke Wilkinson, in what was to prove to be his last game in charge of the Latics before he got sacked. Before last season, the two sides had never met, so at present the head to head is one win for each side.

EARLY YEARS The history of the Latics (an abbreviation of Athletic) began with the founding of Pine Villa F.C. in 1895, a team that played in the Manchester and Lancashire leagues. When neighbours Oldham County folded in 1899, Pine Villa moved into their stadium, Boundary Park, and changed their name to Oldham Athletic. They won the Lancashire Combination title in 1906–07 and were elected into the Football League. They won promotion out of the Second Division in 1909–10, reached the FA Cup semi-final in 1913, and finished second in Division One in 1914–15, before being relegated in 1923. MORE UPS AND DOWNS Another relegation in 1935 left them in the Third Division North, which they won at the end of the 1952–53 campaign, under the legendary George

Hardwick, only to be relegated the following year. Placed in the Fourth Division in the 1958 league reorganisation, and after successfully applying for re-election in 1959 and 1960, they secured promotion in 1962–63, and again in 1970–71 after another relegation in 1969. In the mid-70s the club settled on their now familiar blue shirts. THE RISE TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE Jimmy Frizzell was manager from 1970 to 1982, winning the Third Division in 1973–74. His successor Joe Royle also had a 12-year spell in charge, which saw Oldham reach the League Cup final in 1990 (losing 1-0 to Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest), before winning the Second Division in 1990–91, taking them back to the top-flight for the first time in 68 years. They lost two FA Cup

semi-finals to Manchester United (both after replays) in 1990 and 1994. Oldham were founder members of the Premier League in 1992, but were relegated in 1994 and fell to the third tier by 1997. THE FALL OUT OF THE EFL The club ended a 21-season-long stay in the third tier – which encompassed numerous financial crises, including going into administration in the summer of 2003, – with relegation in 2018. The club began life in the fourth tier, for the first time since 1971, with a 14th-place finish in 2018–19. A succession of managers including Harry Kewell, Keith Curle and John Sheridan could not halt the club's slide. On 23 April 2022, relegation from League Two was confirmed and the club fell into the National League, becoming the first former Premier League team to play non-league football. Although some much-needed financial stability was provided with the November 2003 purchase of the club, recent years have seen very troubled waters. With HMRC winding-up petitions, threats of administration, an EFL transfer embargo, and the relationship between fans and owners increasingly distanced, to say the least.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE Following relegation, the club's supporters' trust started to campaign for a community takeover of the club. On 30 June 2022, after Club owner Abdallah Lemsagam and the Boundary Park owner, Simon Blitz, agreed to a sale, it was reported the sale could go through within the next month. On 28 July 2022, it was confirmed that the club had been sold to Frank Rothwell, owner of Oldham-based Manchester Cabins, and that Oldham were also at an advanced stage in negotiations to buy Boundary Park, a deal which was completed in March 2023. On the field, Oldham started their first National League campaign with just two wins from their first eight games, including the 3-0 defeat at Woking. Sheridan stepped down as manager on 17 September 2022 following a 3–2 defeat of Eastleigh and was replaced by David Unsworth. The side finished last season in 12th place. Unsworth was sacked on 17 September 2023 after a seven-match winless run, and replaced by Micky Mellon, who currently has his side in 10th place.

MANAGER MICKY MELLON DATE OF BIRTH: 18/03/1972 SIGNED: 13/10/2023 Manager Micky Mellon penned a three-year deal to become Latics boss in October 2023. The vastly experienced Mellon arrived at Boundary Park on a three-year contract, having achieved promotion on five occasions with three different clubs during a 15-year managerial career. He led Fleetwood to the National League title in 2012 having taken them up to the fifth tier two seasons earlier. He then plotted Tranmere’s return to the EFL in 2018 - part of a back-to-back promotion which saw him guide them to League One. Mellon’s playing career lasted 17 years, featuring two promotions and more than 500 senior appearances, most notably with Blackpool, Burnley and Tranmere. He earned his first managerial role with the ambitious Fleetwood, taking them from the National League North to League Two, achieving success through the play-offs in 2009/10 and the National League title two seasons later. He earned another promotion by leading Shrewsbury to League One, finishing the season with a run of eight wins from ten games, which was instrumental in helping them finish the campaign in second place on 89 points. After securing their place in League One, Mellon took over at Tranmere, leading them back to the EFL in his first full campaign, before completing successive promotions with victory in the League Two play-offs. He left the Wirral for his native Scotland, taking charge of Dundee United, before returning to Tranmere in 2021.

ONE TO WATCH ALEX REID DATE OF BIRTH: 06/09/1995 HEIGHT: 193 cm SIGNED: 02/12/2022 NUMBER: 25 Striker Alex Reid arrived at Boundary Park last season after his release by Stockport. A proven goalscorer and National League winner at Edgeley Park in 2021/22, the 28-year-old joined Latics after scoring eight goals on loan at Solihull earlier in the campaign and brings genuine pedigree to the forward line. Reid started out in the youth set-ups at Aston Villa and Walsall, before spending time with Rushall Olympic, which earned him a move to Fleetwood Town. The striker didn’t feature for the Cod Army, but did spend time on loan with Wrexham and Solihull, scoring seven goals in the process. Following a short spell with Stevenage in League Two, he featured for AFC Fylde, Ebbsfleet and Dagenham, netting ten goals. Alex signed for Stockport in the summer of 2020, and hit the 20-goal mark for the Hatters, as they finished 3rd in the National League. He rejoined Solihull for a second time last season, before his move to Oldham, where he scored 8 goals in 20 appearances. This season he has 4 goals, including last week’s equaliser in the 1-1 draw with Eastleigh.

Woking v Oldham Athletic Fixture History Last season was the first time the sides had met in competitive action. 13th September 2022 Woking 3 Oldham Athletic 0 Vanarama National League In Woking’s first ever competitive match against Oldham Athletic, on a wet and slippery Tuesday evening at the Laithwaite Community Stadium, the Cards stretched their unbeaten run to three games with a powerful and impressive 3-0 win over the mid-table Latics, moving them up to eighth in the National League table. Woking took the lead in the 19th minute, when Luke Wilkinson played a long ball into the right channel, and Pádraig Amond expertly pulled back for Tyreke Johnson, who skipped past a defender and finished in composed fashion, slotting the ball through the legs of Magnus Norman in the Oldham goal. Following another good save from a fine Jim Kellermann effort the pressure finally told and it was two in the 28th minute as Josh Casey’s perfectly flighted corner from the right was headed in at the back post by an unmarked Luke Wilkinson.

The game was over as a contest in the 54th minute as the Cards made it 3-0 as Johnson grabbed his second of the game. An incisive move down the left saw Ince play in Casey who had made a surging run - and his perfectly weighted cross into the centre of the box was expertly stepped over by Amond and drilled home by Johnson. Tuesday 7th March 2023 Oldham Athletic 1-0 Woking Vanarama National League Woking’s visit to Boundary Park on a freezing cold evening was to end in what felt like a harsh defeat. This was a game which the Cards dominated, although John Rooney did miss a very good goalscoring chance for Oldham midway through the first half. The lack of clear-cut opportunities continued until the Latics stole victory in the 93rd minute. A cross in found Nathan Sheron, and he headed the ball into the bottom corner, giving Will Jääskeläinen no chance. This was cruel on the Cards, who dug deep for much of the match but couldn’t get over the line.

HIDDEN DISABILITY INITIATIVE

oking Football Club is proud to announce the launch of a hidden disability initiative for matchdays at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.

There will be a stall within the Fan Zone at this Saturday's fixture against Solihull Moors for supporters to access further information about the programme, raise awareness, and ask any questions.

Globally, one in six of us live with a disability. Whilst some disabilities are visible, many have non-visible disabilities that are not immediately apparent to others; the most widely known being Dementia or Alzheimer’s.

The Cards Trust has kindly provided 100 sunflower lanyards that will be made available free of charge to any supporters or their carers that request one, to help encourage inclusivity, acceptance and understanding. The lanyards will first be available within the Fan Zone and then from the club shop and reception.

Without a visual cue, it can be difficult for others to identify, acknowledge, or understand the daily barriers faced by people living with an invisible disability. For some people, this can make it hard to understand and believe that someone with a non-visible disability or condition genuinely needs support.

A sunflower suggests happiness, positivity, and strength as well as growth and confidence. The lanyards are universally known and supporters will already be aware of their promotion at airports, railway stations, shopping centres and more.

Georgie is 9 years old and has been a Woking season ticket holder since she was 3. Her favourite player is Josh Casey. When she’s not cheering on the Cards, she enjoys doing crafts and her favourite school subjects are English and Art.

Alex is also 9 (they’re twins!) and has followed in his Dad’s footsteps as an Oldham supporter. He attended his first match when he was 5 months old…and slept through most of it. His favourite player is Joe Nuttall. In his spare time he plays football locally for Mayford Athletic.

oking took away a point on their first road trip in five weeks, as missed chances left a misfortunate taste in the mouth. Helen Ogle got on the scoresheet yet again, to take her tally to eight goals in eight games. The first effort of the game fell to Woking inside ten minutes when Sian Hardaker took aim from outside the box, but her effort went wide. Bournemouth Sports hadn’t really created any major threats on goal, only a handful of corners in the early stages, but they took the lead a quarter of an hour into the game when a ball over the top of the defence, found their striker who dinked the ball over Amy Jenkins in goal, to put the hosts in front. Sophie Burgess was next up to test the ‘keeper, as she took a shot from afar, but it was saved with ease. The hosts nearly doubled their lead when they worked well to create space down the righthand side, but their chance went just over the bar. But just shortly before the half-hour mark, the Cards were on level terms after a fantastic sliding challenge from Trudy Bryan-Kerr broke up the play and allowed Charlotte Keenan to find Helen

who fired into the bottom left-hand corner! She has now scored in each of her last four games. With the use of roll-on roll-off substitutions, Anthony Rosenberg-Murray made use of this rule straight after the goal and replaced Sian and Trudy for Alicia Christie and Gracie Price. Unfortunately, Alicia only lasted four minutes before being taken off due to an injury sustained to her foot and was replaced by Efrosyni Theocharous. Sheena Nichol, who was reinstated into the starting line-up this week, took on her well-known long shots over the course of the 90 minutes, with her first coming from a low drive outside the box but the goalkeeper managed to get to the ball and catch it firmly. She was at it again a little less than five minutes later, once again taking aim and this time with a brilliant spin in the build-up to escape her player, but once again the ‘keeper made the save. Just before half time, Bianca Underhill found Helen with a great corner, but our number 7 headed just wide of the post. HT: Bournemouth Sports 1-1 Woking During the break, Sophie made way for Ella Smith, in the only change made by the management team at that stage.

Young 16-year-old Gracie created Woking’s first chance of the second 45 minutes when she played a beautiful ball into the box, but unfortunately, no one could get to it in time. Laura Mitchell nearly stole the headlines with an audacious effort from just inside the Bournemouth half, however, the ball was captured with no real stress to the ‘keeper. In the space of three minutes, Bournemouth had two separate counter-attacking opportunities to put themselves back ahead in the game, firstly when they broke fast but blazed the ball over the crossbar, then secondly when they somehow managed to miss the target from close range after being one versus one with Amy. In the 72nd minute, Sian returned to the pitch, replacing Gracie in midfield. This substitution didn’t slow Bournemouth down though as their spell on top was met with another close attempt, this time Amy did well to claim the ball and stop the threat after the hosts had time on the right to fire the ball into the box. After this, Trudy came back on to replace Charlotte. The last ten minutes were where it could have gone either way, with tired legs on both sides being the deciding factor this time. Woking was desperately unlucky to see a well-worked routine from Efro and Helen end with the former rattling the bar, after their one-two had got them into a promising position. Next was Bournemouth’s chance to snatch all three points as their number 13’s first of three late chances saw her shot go just inches past the post. She was in once again moments later but this time put too much power on the ball and watched her shot go just marginally over the crossbar after working it well down the left-hand side.

It really doesn’t come closer than that. Sheena’s final effort came in the 90th minute when she stung the palms of the ‘keeper with yet another effort from outside the 18-yard box. The resulting corner though saw Bournemouth nearly steal it at the death after their number 13 picked the ball up on the halfway line and she saw Amy off her line but rather than sprinting towards goal, she took aim from miles out and watched her shot get further away from goal, to leave her team in disappointment. Sophie came back onto the pitch for the final few seconds, replacing Bianca, in what was the last notable action before the referee called time on the game. Full Time: Bournemouth Sports 1-1 Woking Anthony said in his post-match interview that the game was a bit like a “boxing match” and that the team had been “used to astroturf” for the past five weeks so it did take time for the players to get used to the grass and that they’ll need to adapt to it over the next couple of weeks. That point keeps Woking in fifth position in the league and they’ll now turn their attention to next week’s game against Welling United Women in the Capital Cup Second Round. Notable academy graduates in recent history include Woking legends Craig Ross and Joe McNerney, Wrexham's Ollie Palmer, and exChelsea and now-Reading's Jayden Wareham.

For the 2023/24 season, the youth and academy setup runs in three stages; a pre-academy for six to nine-year-olds, a youth academy for nine to 16-year-olds, and a full-time academy for talented young players above the age of 16, including an education plan.

PRE-ACADEMY The Pre-Academy is for the very youngest players, covering U7s, U8s and U9s. Meeting once a week, players train and learn in a fun and friendly environment under the watchful eye of our coaches. Players that show real talent have the opportunity to progress to Woking FC Academy Youth.

he Woking FC Academy has been operating in its current format for over a decade with the aim of helping talented young footballers make progress into the club's first team set up or in their sporting careers whilst continuing with their academic studies.

YOUTH ACADEMY Starting with U9s and progressing through the age groups right up to U16s, players train with our Academy coaches and have the opportunity to play competitively in the Junior Premier League. Training is held twice weekly at CITC’s sports hub, within the grounds of Woking College, and matches are played on Saturdays. At this level, players are able to continue playing for their grassroots clubs. As with the main Academy, players receive a progress report twice per season, which helps identify areas of their game to work on and improve. U16s players are assessed throughout the season with a view to being invited to join Woking FC Academy. WOKING FC ACADEMY Woking FC Academy is a National League licensed academy. We aim to develop each and every player to reach their full potential, instilling ambition and a professional attitude. We work as closely as possible to Category 3 Academy standards, creating a professional environment in which players thrive. Players train 5-6 hours per week at CITC’s sports hub. Their development is supported by video analysis of training and matches, group workshops and strength and conditioning sessions. One-to-one reviews are held twice every season, along with player reports so that both the coaching staff and the players themselves have a clear focus on individual development.

Woking FC Academy plays competitive matches in the U18 Isthmian League, U19 National League and also have the opportunity to play in U23 fixtures. Players in our Elite Development Plan (EDP) compete in the Tactic League and National B League. Cup competitions are a feature of the fixture calendar. Pre-season training includes friendlies and there are opportunities to travel abroad for football tours and tournaments, including the Gothia Cup. Match Reports and Results – W/C 6th November 8th November, National League U19 Alliance – Division E Woking U19B 1 Bromley Whites 4; Woking College Woking’s U17s (who usually represent the club in this division), started the game on level points with their opponents, but found Bromley, although similar in age, to be stronger on the day. As often seems to be the case at the college, the wind and rain did not help proceedings. The pattern of play was established as early as the 3rd minute, with Bromley’s Dawid Przybylo, who was notable throughout, forcing Bob Honey to tip his shot over the bar. Although Woking’s Jack Bashford had seen his shot well saved, Bromley had had a number of chances, and a goal disallowed for offside, before they took the lead on 34 minutes. Charlie Paye forcing home the rebound when his header from a corner was saved. With Woking’s resistance broken, Bromley were to be 3-0 up by half-time. Casey Hewett scored them both, first making the most of a chance created by Przybylo’s wing-play, and then giving Honey no chance from the penalty spot after a foul on Jeffery Okoro.

Half-time: Woking 0 Bromley Whites 3 Woking made changes both to personnel and positions for the second-half, and looked more secure with Aidy Silverstein moving from midfield to a more familiar centre-back role. Although they could have been better prepared, with Jayden Smith missing from action whilst he put in some shin-guards. The second-half was much more evenly contested, and Bashford was able to force a save from Harry Haines in the Bromley goal, before Przybylo hit narrowly over as he sought his own well-deserved goal. It was too late to make a difference to the outcome, but Woking did find a goal in the 85th minute, and a goal of quality too, James Olton dribbling through the Bromley defence and firing home. There was still time for Przybylo to get his name on the scoresheet, finishing confidently when played through on goal. And Bromley nearly had a fifth, with Paye shooting narrowly wide from the edge of the area. Woking will now need victories over the other teams above them if they are to rise above the mid-table positions in this 11-team division. 9th November, Surrey Midweek Floodlit Cup, First Round Woking U18 6 Raynes Park Vale U18 0; Redding Way, Knaphill FC Woking took a break from their winning start to the Isthmian West Division to welcome their opponents from the Combined Counties League East Division. With a rain shower dampening an already chilly evening, the shelter provided at Knaphill was very welcome. The sense that a lack of confidence was undermining Raynes Park grew worse as Woking took the lead on three minutes. Stanley Kyle crossing for Ellis Byrne to drive home from the edge of the area, with Freddie Ausling visibly seeking to encourage his teammates after the concession. Ausling nearly had an equaliser after 16 minutes, chasing down Bob Honey’s clearance and deflecting the ball over the bar. And on 32 minutes he cut inside his defender but pulled his shot wide. As it started to look like things might not be as straightforward for Woking as they first appeared, they had a second, and from a Vale throw-in. Louis Pask providing the finish to Byrne’s great wing play. It was only a few minutes until Woking had their third. Liam Manby’s excellent pass out of defence releasing Harvey Brook down the right, and his fine cross put the ball on a plate for Byron Mitchell to sweep home. It had perhaps been a bit of a scrappy performance by Woking’s standards, but the trademark passing and movement was still in evidence, giving Raynes Park plenty of reason to be doubting themselves. Half-time: Woking 3 Raynes Park Vale 0 The second-half continued where the first had left off. Pask forcing a save, and the referee cautioning the Raynes Park management for their over-exuberant encouragements. Raynes Park had lost their way, with Ray Benbow’s rash challenge on Lucas Boxall earning him a yellow card and a “well done” from a teammate. On 80 minutes it was five, Oliver Tully bringing Jacob Farr down, with Farr himself just squeezing his penalty under the ‘keeper. The sixth rounded things off with Tom Dryer starting and finishing another sweeping move with a fine strike from the edge of the area.
