KICK OFF: 15:00
2023/24 #10 Reece GReGo-cox V. SoUTHeND UNITeD PEACOCK CONSTRUCTIONGreetings, and welcome back to the Laithwaite Community Stadium for this afternoon’s matchup between your Cards and our visitors from Southend United.
It wasn’t that long ago that neither club knew for certain that this fixture would be played today. I think that the mettle shown by Kevin Maher, his backroom staff and their players has been nothing short of incredible. I’d also like to offer a special welcome to the Southend United supporters and congratulate you all on beginning the next chapter of your historic club under the stewardship of Justin Rees and his consortium.
"It wasn’t that long ago that neither club knew for certain that this fixture would be played today. I think that the mettle shown by Kevin Maher, his backroom staff and their players has been nothing short of incredible."
The highlight of Tuesday night for me – despite the result – was welcoming Reece Grego-Cox and Rohan Ince back to action after earlyseason injuries.
The results will come. It sounds cliché to say “trust the process,” but I do trust the process. We have been juggling injuries throughout the squad, and it seems as if one comes back to fitness, another goes off injured. This has been a period in which we’ve played 7 matches across a span of just 21 days – including our two longest trips of the year (away to Hartlepool and Fylde).
To bridge the gap, we are pleased to welcome two strategic loans that will be in today’s squad. Woking fans will remember Charlie O’Connell who made 13 appearances for the Cards last season in the midfield and the defence. We’re also happy to welcome emerging talent Morgan Williams who joins on loan from AFC Wimbledon who featured for the Dons in the EFL Cup vs Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Thanks for your continued support. It means the world to our entire Club.
Always remember that the complaint (and compliment) line is always open. Just email me at john.katz@wokingfc.co.uk and we can take in your feedback. Or, as the kids say, you can slide into my DMs on Twitter at @jekatz33.
Best, John Katz Chief Executive
"The results will come. It sounds cliché to say “trust the process,” but I do trust the process."
As a reminder, it is our goal to ensure that all supporters feel safe and welcome at the Laithwaite Community Stadium. To that end, on 11 December 2021, the Club launched the “In Safe Hands” programme to help our fans report racist, sexist, homophobic, or other abusive language simply and anonymously.
If you hear any abusive language, experience it yourself or if you or someone you see feels / looks threatened, you can text the Club anonymously and the message will be monitored by our Safety Officer during the match. Simply text WFC (followed by the nature of your concern and location) to 66777 and we will address your concerns. Example: If you hear racial abuse whilst sitting in the KRE, please send the following text to 66777: “WFC racial abuse centre section of KRE.”

15:00 Kick-Off
Woking will hope to get back to winning ways when they host Southend United at the Laithwaite on Saturday.
Defeat to FC Halifax Town on Tuesday night was a cruel blow for the Cards, as another flurry of chances went begging before their opponents stole the game at the death. However, the returns of Rohan Ince and Reece Grego-Cox from injury were a positive sight for Woking fans, and they will both hope to be in and around the squad against a side in form on and off the pitch.
Darren Sarll will also hope that Gillingham loanee Lewis Walker, who scored at Fylde last Saturday, will be back in the squad, as well as club captain Josh Casey, who missed Tuesday night with illness.
Ticket pricing and other details are available here.
Luton Town vs. Tottenham will be live in Cardinals
Bar from 12:30, with Happy Hour running until 13:30 on Carling, Madri and Cold River Cider.
It would be hard to discuss Southend United on the pitch without talking about Kevin Maher. Appointed in October 2021, with the Shrimpers sitting perilously inside the National League drop zone, the former midfielder guided his side safely out of the relegation zone and gave Southend fans hope for the future.
His side have been competitive in the National League ever since, despite well known off-the-field issues. An 8th placed finish last season saw them narrowly miss out on the playoffs, despite being under a transfer embargo since September 2022. That embargo is still in place for now, but Southend this week agreed a takeover by a consortium led by Australian Justin Rees, who has wiped out their previously perilous HMRC debt and will officially take over from the start of next month. This news has been widely received and praised across football, and we wish the Shrimpers all the best in the future.
On the pitch, it's been yet another incredible season so far for Maher's side considering their issues, but due to a 10 point deduction enforced for their deferral of HMRC debts, the Shrimpers currently occupy the final relegation spot in 21st place, having won six, drawn three and lost five of their 14 games so far, scoring 23 and conceding 17. Harry Cardwell has scored 10 of those goals, putting him towards the top of the goalscoring charts, and he is one to watch, along with Afghanistan international Noor Husin, who has impressed in the middle of the park.
Do not be fooled in the slightest by Southend's misleading league position; the Shrimpers would occupy the last playoff place were it not for their deduction, and celebrated the news of their takeover in style with a comfortable 2-0 win over Oxford City at Roots Hall on Tuesday night.
A Jack Bridge goal cancelled out former Southend loanee Marcus Dackers' opener as it finished 1-1 at the Laithwaite in April. This was the second 1-1 draw of the season in this fixture, with September 2022's fixture in Essex seeing Reece Grego-Cox's goal cancelled out by Dackers during his loan spell with the Shrimpers. Woking did get one over Southend in October 2022 in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round, with goals from Padraig Amond and Ricky Korboa enough after former Cardinal favourite Jake Hyde had levelled the tie.
In the previous season, following their relegation from League Two, Southend were beaten 2-0 by Woking at Roots Hall in October 2021; goals from Tahvon Campbell and Max Kretzschmar were enough to defeat Maher's side containing former Card Kacper Lopata. The reverse fixture in February 2022 went the Shrimpers' way, with a five goal thriller seeing Southend edge it 3-2 at the Laithwaite in front of the BT Sport cameras, with Harry Cardwell getting the winner.

In the late 1890s, several teams had "Southend" in their name. But Southend United was formed following a meeting in the Blue Boar on May 19th, 1906. Playing at Roots Hall, the club gained election to the Southern League Second Division, winning the titles in the first two seasons, and entering the FA Cup in 1907.
At the end of WWI, Roots Hall was unusable and Southend United moved to The Kursaal. The Southern League clubs formed the new Third Division.
At the end of 1933/34, the Blues moved to the Southend Stadium. They gave Tottenham a fright in the FA Cup of 1935/6, drawing 4-4 at White Hart Lane.
After WWII, the 1950s saw soaring crowds, high scoring matches and a run to the fifth round of the FA Cup. In 1955/56 the Blues moved into the new Roots Hall.
In 1963/64, a poor season saw gates down and significant debts. Next season, the club was relegated to Division Four. Second place in 1971/72 ensured a return to the Third Division. But in 1975/76 the Blues dropped back to Division Four. Another second place in 1977/78 saw them return to the third tier. Next season, in the FA Cup the Blues drew 0-0 at home to European Champions Liverpool in the third round, before losing the replay 3-0.
Southend were relegated at the end of 1979/80 but bounced straight back and finished seventh in Division Three in 1982/83. But troubled times followed. In 1984 former England captain Bobby Moore, a board member, took over as manager but could not prevent relegation. The club avoided having to seek re-election on the last day of 1984/85 while debts were growing. Promotion came in 1986/87, but relegation
followed two years later. Back-to-back promotions in the next two seasons saw Southend in the First Division (second tier). The arrival of manager Barry Fry and striker Stan Collymore ensured survival in the first season.
Despite a good start to the 1990s, 1996/97 was the first of two successive relegations, with 1999/2000 seeing a third narrowly avoided.
In 2002/03 and 2003/04, the Shrimpers reached the LDV trophy final. Promotion to League One came through the play-offs. In 2004/05 the team won promotion to the Championship.
Although Southend were relegated again in 2005/06, the 2006/07 Carling Cup saw them defeat Manchester United 1-0 to reach the fifth round. The side reached the play-offs in 2007/08 and the next season drew 1-1 against Chelsea at Stamford
Bridge in the FA Cup third round, before losing the replay 4-1. But 2009/10 saw relegation to League Two. In 2012/13 the Blues reached the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final. In 2014/15 they were back in League One via the play-offs. However successive relegations in 2019/20 and 2020/21 meant a drop to the fifth tier for the first time in their history. A thirteenth-place finish in 2021/22 came amidst continuing disquiet amongst the fans regarding the future of the club, its ownership, and its location. In February 2023, a £1.4m payment to HMRC at least offered some respite. But a run of poor results meant the club missed out on the end of season play-offs by three points.
The situation surrounding points deductions, court appearances and the ownership of the club is ongoing at the time of writing.
Previous clubs: Southend United U21s and U23s, Chelmsford City (Caretaker Manager), Bristol Rovers (Caretaker Manager)
Kevin played as a central midfielder for Southend United from 1998 to 2008, where he helped them win the League Two play-offs in 2004/05 and top League One the following year. During his playing career he scored 26 goals in 599 appearances, with 25 goals coming in his 454 games for Southend. Although born in England, he was eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland and made four appearances for their under-21 team.
In 2014 he started his coaching career at Chelmsford City but moved to Southend in 2015 to manage the U21s. In 2016 he became a first team coach at Bristol Rovers, taking on the interim management on two occasions. He returned to Southend as head coach in October 2021, replacing Phil Brown. Southend’s 2-2 draw at Rochdale last weekend was his 100th game in charge, 42 of which he has won. Other notable names on the staff team are John Still, who is Head of Football, and Stan Collymore, who is Senior Football Strategist.
Position: Forward, Number: 9, Age: 26
Debut: vs King’s Lynn Town, 21.01.2022
Harry Cardwell signed for Southend United in January 2022 for an undisclosed fee from Chorley. A former Scotland U21 international, Cardwell began his career in the youth system at his hometown club, Hull City, before joining Reading’s Academy at the age of 16.
In 2017, after five years with the Royals, Cardwell moved back up north to join Grimsby Town on a permanent deal and went on to make 53 appearances in the Football League for the Mariners before signing for Chorley in 2020. The 6ft 3 striker was instrumental in the Magpies’ historic FA Cup run in 2020/21, also scoring the equaliser in the 3-2 comeback win away at Wigan Athletic.
Cardwell then spent the second half of the 2020/21 season on loan at Stockport County following the curtailment of the National League North, featuring 19 times and grabbing six goals as the Hatters fell short in the National League play-offs.
In his fist half-season at Roots Hall, Harry scored three goals in 14 league appearances. He managed to remain fit for the second half of the 2022/23 season, netting seven times after the turn of the year, including two last-minute winners. This season Harry has got off to a prolific start, with 9 goals in his first 13 games, including both of his sides’ goals in last weekend’s 2-2 draw at Rochdale. Made 5 appearances on loan at Woking in 2015.

FA Cup Round One
15 November 1997
Less than a year after taking Coventry City to a replay, Conference side Woking were seen by many as favourites to beat a Southend team struggling in the third tier Division Two following relegation from Division One the previous season. It was perhaps a surprise to many then when Blues struck twice late on to win their first ever meeting with Woking 2-0. First Nathan Jones scored with a brilliant free-kick to put the Shrimpers ahead on 88 minutes, before Phil Gridelet finished from close range to put the tie beyond doubt two minutes later.
Southend went to Craven Cottage in Round Two but went out 1-0 to Fulham.

Vanarama National League
13th November 2021
The teams went in to their first league meeting with Southend still finding their feet in the National League following their relegation to the fifth tier for the first time in their history, and Woking struggling to find the form they had shown in early October.
The deadlock was broken in the 22nd minute with in-form Tahvon Campbell showing neat control before placing his shot perfectly in the bottom left corner, his 10th goal of the season. With Southend’s pressure not reaping any rewards it was Woking who scored to seal the victory. A Max Kretzschmar shot struck the arm of a
Southend defender. Kretzschmar convincingly slotted the penalty into the top left corner and celebrated with the buoyant 308-strong travelling support.
Vanarama National League
12th February 2022
The return fixture again saw a victory for the away team.
As early as the eighth minute a vicious shot from Callum Powell left Mark Smith unsure whether to stick or twist, and his palmed save saw the ball roll to Jason Demetriou for an academic tap-in to open the scoring, with the Woking defence scrambling to respond.
Within three minutes it was 2-0 to Southend. Powell claiming one for himself as the ball fell to him after a goalmouth scramble. His vicious low drive found the square foot of space at the base of Smith’s near post.
With the score 0-2 at half-time it was with surprise and gratitude that the Kingfield Road End welcomed a goal for the home side within a few minutes of the restart, as Inih Effiong fired a deflected shot over Steve Arnold to halve the deficit.
And then, just before the hour, it was level. Shaun Hobson’s foul on substitute Tarryn Allarakhia in the penalty area gave Woking a penalty which Effiong struck straight down the middle to level things up. The Cards’ best spell of the game then threatened a third without a genuinely clear-cut chance. And with their first real chance of the half in the 76th minute Southend found their winner. Harry
Cardwell beating Tyreke Johnson in the air and bulleting his header into the ground and past the despairing Smith.

Woking earned a point at Roots Hall in a 1-1 draw earlier this season.
The Cards’ front-foot start led to Reece GregoCox’s excellent 14th minute strike from the edge of the penalty area, but this was cancelled out by Marcus Dackers’ (now a Card) equaliser in the 66th minute, after sustained pressure from Blues. The result left the Cards in the play-off places while Southend dropped to 13th. 134 supporters made the journey to Essex and their applause to the Woking players was reciprocated in the usual manner come full-time.

FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round
15th October 2022
11 days after the drawn league fixture at Roots Hall Woking beat a determined Southend United at the Laithwaite Community Stadium on a changeable afternoon weather-wise where Spring, Summer and Autumn all made an appearance.
Pádraig Amond gave Woking the lead, with his first Cards goal, on 9 minutes, curling a sweetly struck 20 yard free-kick past the despairing dive of Nna Noukea in the Southend goal.
Southend equalised, albeit against the run of play, on 37 minutes. A free-kick routine of their own teeing up ex-Card Jake Hyde to fire past Craig Ross. Woking’s winner came on 82 minutes through Ricky Korboa’s first goal for the club, following good work from Josh Casey, and debutant Rhys Browne. Sarll’s substitutions making the crucial difference. However, Woking were knocked out of the cup by Oxford United in the next round.

10th April 2023
Something of a midfield battle this one, before a respectable crowd of 3,798. Marcus Dackers’ put Woking ahead in the 47th minute, only for Jack Bridge to equalize five minutes later.
The significance of this result, combined with results elsewhere, was that Woking had confirmed their place in the end-of-season play-offs – the first time in their history they had made this achievement.

Woking Football Club is proud to announce the launch of a hidden disability initiative for matchdays at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.
Globally, one in six of us live with a disability. Whilst some disabilities are visible, many have non-visible disabilities that are not immediately apparent to others; the most widely known being Dementia or Alzheimer’s.
Without a visual cue, it can be difficult for others to identify, acknowledge, or understand the daily barriers faced by people living with an invisible disability. For some people, this can make it hard to understand and believe that someone with a non-visible disability or condition genuinely needs support.
There will be a stall within the Fan Zone at this Saturday's fixture against Solihull Moors for supporters to access further information about the programme, raise awareness, and ask any questions.
The Cards Trust has kindly provided 100 sunflower lanyards that will be made available free of charge to any supporters or their carers that request one, to help encourage inclusivity, acceptance and understanding. The lanyards will first be available within the Fan Zone and then from the club shop and reception.
A sunflower suggests happiness, positivity, and strength as well as growth and confidence. The lanyards are universally known and supporters will already be aware of their promotion at airports, railway stations, shopping centres and more.
