TUESDAY 15TH AUGUST 2023
KICK OFF: 19:45PM
Greetings, and welcome back to the Laithwaite Community Stadium for this evening’s matchup between your Cards and our visitors from Rochdale.
Saturday’s performance didn’t really look like “us,” did it? Despite two well-taken goals from Scott Cuthbert and Reece Grego-Cox, the rest of the match was atypical for how we expect the lads will look on matchday. You don’t have to look much past the character in our changing room to know that the players, the manager and the backroom staff that we’re a far-better side than what we have shown thus far. There is a period of adjustment at the start of the season, and we’ll be on the up soon enough.
As we meet at the Laithwaite for now the second time this season, I’d like to thank each of you for being s supporter of this amazing football
club. From myself and my partner Drew Volpe, along with the Club’s Board of Directors and shareholders… Thank you.
“You don’t have to look much past the character in our changing room to know that the players, the manager and the backroom staff that we’re a far-better side than what we have shown thus far."
For those of you who read the digital programme on the weekend, the next bit here will be repetitive as we remind our first-timers about the changes in and around the Club for this season.
As was the case last season, this season again will not come without changes. If you’re reading this, you already know what one of the first big changes is. We’ve made the shift to digital programmes for several reasons. Firstly, it allows us to distribute matchday programmes free to all fans in attendance. It affords our commercial partners the opportunity to use videos and hyperlinks in their own ads and will dramatically increase the number of people who get to see their ads. For those who like a keepsake of the match, we will have Matchday Collectables available for purchase at the programme huts.
Piloted at the Play-off, we’ve now become a more traditional stadium where you pick a seat to sit in or a terrace to stand on. The decision to launch the seating reconfiguration is a direct result of our growing base of support. With the new system, you’ll pick the area you wish to be in and will need to watch the match from the area you selected.
While this does stop migration into different sections, it does not restrict your ability to move about the ground as usual to enjoy the Cardinals Bar, the Fan Zone and the Club Shop.
It's important to note that this was done for safety reasons with the additional benefit of alleviating queues at the turnstiles by designating entry gates based on seating area to ensure a smoother, faster entry into the Laithwaite. It will take a bit of getting used to for sure, but bear with us as we grow.
Lastly, with our switch to Pro Direct, our kit has arrived late and shop inventory is low. As a thank you to our Season Ticket Holders, our 20% Season Ticket Holder shop discount will be extended through 31 August.
Always remember that the complaint (and compliment) line is always open. Just email me at john.katz@wokingfc.co.uk and we can take in your feedback. Or, as the kids say, you can slide into my DMs on Twitter at @jekatz33.
Best,
JOHN KATZ CHIEF EXECUTIVE"As we meet at the Laithwaite for now the second time this season, I’d like to thank each of you for being a supporter of this amazing football club."

19:45 Kick-Off
Woking will look to bounce back following Saturday's defeat to Altrincham when they welcome recently relegated Rochdale to the Laithwaite.
After conceding three goals on Saturday, Darren Sarll will hope that his side can find the adequate response to overcome a team who recorded their first win at this level on Saturday.
There were some positives, however, as Sam Habergham and Charlie Wakefield returned to the bench, with the former making his first competitive Woking appearance. Cards fans will hope that Josh Casey recovers in time for the game after an injury in training saw him ruled out of the Altrincham fixture, whilst news is awaited on the fitness of Rohan Ince after he went off injured in the first half.
Supporters are notified that roadworks are currently taking place on Kingfield Road, approaching Wych Hill, and encouraged to utilise
A League One side as recently as 2020/21, Dale are a side who have had their problems both on and off the pitch in recent years. An attempted hostile takeover of the club in July 2021 saw them deducted six points, albeit suspended for two years, and this was only settled in court in August 2022, whilst an 18th placed finish in 2021/22 was followed up by a rock bottom finish in League Two last season, finishing eight points from safety.
Three managers last season meant stability was hard to come by, but the last of those three, Jimmy McNulty has taken the club into this division, and has recorded one win and one loss from their first two games. A 1-0 defeat at home to newly promoted Ebbsfleet United in front of the TNT Sports cameras was followed up by Saturday's 1-0 victory at newly promoted Oxford City, with record goalscorer Ian Henderson providing the goods. The 38-year-old is enjoying his second spell with Dale, having rejoined the club in 2022, and only he and former Card Jimmy Keohane remain from the side that were relegated from League One.
New signings have included Harvey Gilmour from rivals FC Halifax Town, Kairo Mitchell from Notts County, Louie Moulden on loan from Wolves and experienced midfielder Adam Clayton from Bradford City, whilst forward Tyrese Sinclair enjoyed a superb loan spell at Altrincham last season, scoring five in eleven games. Former Woking star Tahvon Campbell will play no part for Dale until at least January, as he has been loaned to Wealdstone.
Surprisingly, these two teams have never met in any fixture, so history will be made on Tuesday night.

JIMMY MCNULTY
Jimmy McNulty (born 13 February 1985) played his professional career as a centre-back. Born in Runcorn, McNulty had trials at both Liverpool and Everton as a schoolboy before choosing to join the latter's academy set-up. McNulty then signed for Wrexham where he became their reserve team captain. After a brief spell at Bangor City he joined Caernarfon Town, in summer 2004. He made 63 appearances for the club over two seasons, scoring twice, whilst also reaching the position of captain.
In July 2006 McNulty signed for League Two club Macclesfield Town, but missed much of his first season there with a broken leg. In January 2008 McNulty signed an eighteen-month contract with fellow League Two side Stockport County.
During the January 2009 transfer window McNulty joined Brighton & Hove Albion, signing a 3½ year contract. However, on 28 February he ruptured his right kidney, which ultimately had to be removed, keeping
him out of competitive action until October 2009. After making another 10 competitive appearances McNulty joined Scunthorpe United on loan until the end of the season.
During July 2010, he re-signed for Scunthorpe on a further six months' loan deal, however after suffering an ankle injury requiring surgery, McNulty returned to Brighton in December 2010. In June 2011, McNulty signed for Championship side Barnsley on a two-year contract.
In January 2014, McNulty had his contract at Barnsley cancelled by mutual consent, and signed an 18-month deal for Bury. In June 2015, McNulty signed for Rochdale on a two-year contract and reunited with his old boss Keith Hill. Following a number of contract extensions, and after over 200 appearances, in August 2022, McNulty was appointed caretaker manager, following the sacking of Robbie Stockdale. He had another spell as Rochdale's interim manager following the sacking of Stockdale's successor Jim Bentley in March 2023, winning his first two games in charge, away at AFC Wimbledon on 1 April, and at home against Walsall on 7 April 2023. Following the club's relegation, McNulty was appointed manager on a two-year contract on 12 May 2023.
Adam Stephen
Clayton (born 14 January 1989), midfield.
Clayton’s professional career started at Manchester City. While a City player, he enjoyed loan spells at Carlisle United, with whom he reached the 2010 Football League Trophy Final, and Leeds United, where his loan spell was made permanent in 2010. Clayton then had further loan spells at Peterborough United and Milton Keynes Dons before becoming a regular in Leeds' team in the 2011–12 season.
He then spent two years with Huddersfield Town. During January 2014, Huddersfield rejected a £1
million transfer bid from Brighton & Hove Albion to sign Clayton. He ended the 2013–14 season by winning the club's Player of the Year award after making 42 league appearances, scoring 7 goals. He signed for Middlesbrough in 2014. While at the club, he was promoted to and relegated from the Premier League and formed a strong midfield partnership with Grant Leadbitter. He spent six seasons at Middlesbrough before leaving the club in 2020 when his contract expired, and then joined another Championship club, Birmingham City, where he stayed until November 2021.
Clayton signed for Doncaster Rovers in January 2022, and Bradford City took over his contract a year later.
On 10 July 2023, Clayton signed a one-year contract with Rochdale.
Clayton was a member of England's under-20 team at the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Clayton has made over 500 career appearances, mostly in the Championship with Leeds United, Huddersfield Town and Middlesbrough.
