Where did I travel?

M A H A M AT A D O U M H A S S A N E I'm 21 years old junior architect from Chad Republic. I always had an interest and passion for Architecture, and therefore, I have recently graduated with a Bachelor of science (Architecture Studies) (LAM Part 1) from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in Malaysia. Besides Chad, I lived most of my life in France, UAE, USA, Ethiopia, Malaysia and currently living in Khartoum, Sudan. I would like to involve in the field of architecture in order to gain experience and learn new skills to create real designs. Architecture to me, is about improving conditions: environmental, social and also serving others through the design of the built environment.

BBQ WATER-EDGE ENSEMBLE Location Class Type Roles Level Duration Intake

: Dengkil, Malaysia : Architecture Design 3 : Academic (Individual Project) : Concept Designer : 3th Semester : 8 Weeks : August 2017

My design to build a Water-edge Ensemble dining pavilion that have open spaces structures which is allowing natural ventilation and lighting around the building which create eco friendly environment supporting by nature. Visitor will get relax and feel comfortable. The main building designed to give a feeling of stunning to visitors. Private dining pavilion area is special area for guests which is designed in a way that enables visitors to choose the good place for siting and enjoy the view.

CONCEPT Normal Cube

Gathering & Barbecue is my concept design. I chose this activity and cooking method to create forms and spaces adapted from them. 01

ARCHITECTURE

For gathering activity, I create spaces with open areas and different levels hight using six set spaces typologies. Framing the best views on the site. all of this let visitor of families or friends enjoy their outdoor activities.

Modified Form

Opening & Walkway

Structure

Final Space

I quote this building form from the barbeque cooking method or the meat cooked this way. The structure of the building taken from roasting and grilling signs. the form is taken from the shape of the meat and put them together. Shapes with sharp corners in walls and roof translated from The pleasure of eating grilled meat and enthusiasm in the event that visitors enter the building and the extra activity in the place.

SWOT ANALYSIS

DINING PAVILION

Strengths

Opportunities

The site is located next to a lake surrounded by a lot of vegetation which provide better air quality with good small from trees which good for make bigger openings.

The site is big enough to accommodate and build spaces with multiple openings and have a good view of all sides. It is in a quiet area which gives more privacy to visitors.

DINING PAVILION

MAIN BUILDING

Concrete Foundatio n

Physical Condition

Wind Direction

The floor of the buildings will be higher a little bit from the ground because of the water flow direction to the lake. Use an Anti-moisture concrete foundation in this clay soil.

The wind direction of the site is from south to north crossing a lot of trees and come to the buildings. For that, I make openings for nice ventilation.

Sun Orientation

Views

As it is shown in the 3D diagram the sun goes from east to west in a vertical way. For that put service spaces and building in east area. Use shading device in west area.

Best view in the site in the west north area in lakeside because of that putting dining pavilions and waterfront on that side. Lock-Out Tower have a 360° degree view.

SIX SET SPACES

Weaknesses

Threats

The weaknesses of the site is that clay soil needs strong and deep foundations. There no natural shading element in the east area of the site.

One of the threats of the area not good for night activities because is far from downtown. The main facilities are far away from each other.

This project is designed to introduce you to six formal typologies and use them to six different buildings. These are; linear, spine, serial progression, cloister, courtyard, and centric. The linear and centric typologies being the extremes. Linear is has a clear sense of direction encouraging movement, while centric, as the name suggests, emphasizes a stopping point or point of gathering. The spine and serial progression are derivatives of the linear where as the cloister and courtyard are derivatives of the centric.

This is a theoretical project. It is about exploring the idea that what we build to live in may simply be a re-imaging of the world that already surrounds us. And also exploring a series of landscapes, to develop an understanding of those landscapes and then to create a series of new 3 rooms each creating a spatial resonance related to a specific part of Sungai Pelek province. Each room is conceived using a set of principles abstracted from my understanding of a site context. As interior landscapes that construct whole new worlds founded on the qualities of the original landscapes.

BAGAN LALANG ECO LODGE Location Class Type Roles Level Duration Intake

: Bagan Lalang, Malaysia : Architecture Design 4 : Academic (Individual Project) : Concept Designer : 4th Semester (Final Project) : 8 Weeks : February 2018

My design is to build an eco-lodge in Bagan Lalang on the beach in Sungai Pelek town that has open space structures that are allowing us to understand the natural and cultural environment that is sensitive to the site. Use of local culture, products, communities and services as well as ventilation and lighting around the building which create an eco-friendly environment supporting by natural. Visitors will get relax and feel comfortable. The fundamentals of design will be locally beneficial, ecologically sustainable.

CONCEPT My design concept is taken from the tree branch's natural function. When someone sits under a tree, it is covered him from the heat from of sun. It brings psychological comfort when the wind comes and manipulates with the branches of the trees then feel the cold air. This is what applied in the eco-lodge building with its adaptation to the surrounding environment of ventilation openings and natural lighting. 13

ARCHITECTURE

Making a curved curtain panel roof in brown color starts from the midpoint in red color in site to the exterior part spaces. The wind comes to the blue color area to the whole building. It also works as a shading device using special glass on roof cover from the sun hit. That is the skylight in the daytime will come in but the temperature will not get higher. That also is a natural resource of light. Use less electricity in the day time.

Playing of natural light one of conmen ideas in poetic school of thought but it rare compared to the other school of thought in architecture. This building will be the future booking office for recreational community center. The idea of the designed this building is controlling or pass the natural light in the building by making openings with curtain walls and apertures in roof. Faced to east area to control morning and noon light. At the same time this opening will bring cool wind in evening.

CONCEPTUAL DIAGRAM

Make the reception roof aperture have multiple triangles which is one of sharp forms to give feeling of movement, delight or friction

21

ARCHITECTURE

Make the curtain walls face to east to give the direct light of sun.

Why I use triangles as sharp form and make it messy in the roof aperture because of my recreational community center.

Make light aperture direct to morning sun light.

The wind direction in morning and noon come from south and west. In evening come from east..

Controlling the natural light in the building

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

The design starts with very basic cube and faced to east.

Insert another thin cube to it as passage.

Make the basic cube taller to make the aperture a little bit up.

Shape the building to be convenient with light.

Make the apertures in this building facing the east.

PLAN N.T.S RECEPTION The roof aperture have multiple triangles which is one of sharp forms which give feelings of movement, delight or friction.

PASSAGE When you enter the light shape inside the passage gives feeling contrast element between light and shadow.

Community centers are public locations where members of the community meet together to do activities or social support or public information so I chose to make something that will be recreational for people. This site is a commercial area and schools and universities, so this is the idea of making community center in sports. The concept of this design is curiosity, it's fast becoming my most valued professional attribute. Curiosity inhibits frustration, It motivates and energizes creativity. Curiosity can undermine the invisibility of assumptions. Design the building with a little bit of shape different like irregular forms. CONCEPT FRAMING VIEWS FRAMING VIEWS: IMPROVING THE USER EXPERIENCE OF SPACES We, as users of the built environment, spend most of our days in heavily cordoned off spaces, Attempting to both be productive during our work day and to turn-off the hustle and relax after work hours. Framing a view is a common device in garden design. The unpleasant truth is that we do not have enough time to be outdoors and experience what nature has to offer. With the prevalent introverted construction style being applied to most new developments, It is essential for us as practicing architects to attempt and breakaway from this stereotypical construction method.
