HISTORY | ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROJECT 4
HISTORY
People in the early days planted varieties of root vegetables and crops. Agriculture was a nourishing sector in Alifushi. For live stocks, chicken was widely used in Alifushi.
The earliest settlers in Alifushi were Maldivian boat travellers and their families. The population started from the northern part of the island opposite to where the waves broke down. This is a common trend in the settlers of Maldivians. There were mainly two architectural styles in the early days. Housed were made from the leaves of coconut palms or coral stones though they were very rare. This is the traditional architectural style that is seen around Maldives.
Alifushi thrived in fishing and it was one of the main source of food for the islanders. They exported dried fish to the capital city of Maldives, Male’ and traded the basic necessities needed like flour, rice and areca nuts. A bahtheli with three sails was used to travel. Apart from fishing, kissaru vadain and thedhuvi vadain (carpentry) were another source of occupation for the people. People used to go to other islands to make Dhoni’s and work on other small carpentry related works. When one has the capability to build their own boat, they build it in the nearest beach. Boatyards were built in the late 1900’s

Kandugeri is a myth that is derived from an incident that happened in Alifushi during 1940’s. It is now a bedtime story that told told to the children in Alifushi for obedience.
Tabrizi monument is a shrine that is built for Abu Al Barakat Yoosuf ul Barubary otherwise known Thabreyzugefaanu. He is a great scholar that visited alifushi. It is said that he predicted a great fishing year for the islanders and thus makin2g him a privileged person in Alifushi
Theft increased drastically in Boduthadhu which was caused by the Cold war. As a punishment, they were sent to ‘naibuge’ or a court to finalize a verdict. Dhurain and Andhangondi were two main forms of punishment.
Boduberu and Mangalan dhandi are traditional activities that are held in special occasions and ceremonies and for entertainment use since the earliest times in Alifushi.
Hondaidhoo Alibe was a convicted criminal for murdering two men. He was sent to Alifushi as a source of punishment. He worked as a blacksmith to earn money and lived in Alifushi until his death.

HISTORY | ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROJECT 4
REVIVING THE HISTORIC BOND One of the most distinguished feature found in the history of Alifushi is the architectural formation created by the early settlers. It created a strong bond between the surrounding neighbours creating a benevolent and a lively environment. The Master Plan for the community centre is derived from the lifestyle of early settlers in order to revive the historic bond and relive it in the present. This is achieved by eliminating all boundaries and creating new spaces that allows to connect with the history of Alifushi with the present. The masterplan is designed to ignite the historical spirit which can embark a stronger bond between the islanders.

As i stepped on the soft soil of R.Alifushii was expecting to see the spirit of boat building all around me. I was expecting the proud people of Alifushi to boast about this talent of theirs in every house i visit. But that wasnt the case. There wasnt a trace of this throughout the island except in the boatyard. It was just like any other island in Maldives. This unique talent and pride of boat building and carpentry needs to be restored. The moment someone steps foot on this island they must be curious enough to be lead to explore further. They need to be Site is disconnected from the area where inspired by the beauty and the hardwork the people live. DIVIDED UNITY
As said by the architect Denise Scott Brown “Architects can’t force people to connect it can only plan the crossing points, remove barriers and make the meeting place useful and Attractive. Based on our Community Centre masterplan, it comes inclusive with recreational areas, auditorium (learning centre), guest accommodation and shops. My focus is based on the dormitory building with a public restaurant. The purpose of this design is to remove the concrete wall that stand between dormitory students and the society. There are already two spaces created. One is private space which is; dormitory and another is a public place (restaurant). Since the restaurant is categorised as an economical building, the connection with the student & the society is not up to its maximum. So for the whole society to connect there was an additional space. This space will be the main attraction point where people can cross points, which would also create a space that will create opportunity to engage in spontaneous social encounters. Through this space, the dormitory students and the society can interact more, which would make them feel like they belong within the society. In this design intent there are main three spaces, the form of the building is driven from this three points, which forms a triangle.

WEAVING MEADOW
Walking through the weaving paths of the learning center one experiences inspirational spaces that are permeable to the community and nature. By outspreading the physical learning environment and the unique talent of wood working from the learning center to the broader community it inspires the community to participate and learn the unique skill of the island. The people in this island were free people. Went anywhere they want. In any route they please. Through the paths of old town. Through the backyards of houses. Even through the houses. There were no complains. In fact they were invited. The bond between the islanders were this strong. They were in absolute peace. Until recently. When robbery increased and people’s privacy meant almost nothing. The boundary walls started rising. The routes created through decades of walking, vanished within a few years. The old pleasant way of living needs to be re stored. Even if we cannot restore this exactly how it was before we can try to create a similar feeling. Make it more open and permeable by some other means. Perhaps by making openings which acts as permeable pockets. Through transparent and interactive spaces which are connected through weaving paths, this design aims at obscuring the boundaries between teachers, students, and local community.

RETRIEVE
The Museum serves the purpose of reflecting the life and Craftsmanship of R.Alifushi people and their forefathers’. As a focal point in the center of the community center symbolizing a floating building resembling a fishing boat (Mas Dhoni) which will be showcasing culture and craftsmanship of R.Alifushi people and their forefather’s. The form of the structure is inspired from the original form, taken from FISH and Dhoni . Wood will be used as main material to cover the façade along with glass to represent Alifushi rich tradition of boat building materials. As the top layer of translucent glass with polyvinyl filter to absorb destructive ultraviolet rays. The ground floor will have photographic historical hallway and an Exhibit hall for the events and actives arrange by school, council or any other privet sector. First floor will be occupied by a library collection of range from educational, historical, and boatbuilding related books. As Alifushi and their residents are famous for their creativity and best knowledge for boatbuilding in the past, building different type of vessels, which do not have much involvement of the locals. Outside companies have started business in these yards using cheap foreign nonprofessional labors. It seems that with few years of time the locals will lose all the credibility’s of their forefathers works done in boatbuilding in the early days. This Museum will provide a platform for the local to interact with the boatbuilding facilities and provide resources to bring out the creativity, inspiration and competiveness among themselves and overtake the major involvement in the boatbuilding Sector

BADHAHI HIYAA
Concept is based on early settlers of R.Alifushi and their lifestyles. this building connect with local and regional economy with a touch of modernism where it offers new option for leisure and recreational and ,visitors accommodation that sensitively connect with the neighborhood .this building is design to become pedestrian friendly ,and the mix used of residential and commercial building achieve this. it has architectural element such as interacting balconies ,roof gardens, courtyard and typical social space .this building strives to be socially vibrant building. Alifushi is a part of R.Atoll which stands on a detached reef of their own with a very deep water. The island id distinguished for its carpenters and boat builders. Even though the island is isolated modernism did strike the place. But still there is a part of Alifushi which is described as the old town of the island is still as it was before. This was the place where they made their first settlement. Initial settlers, made shelters in the form of huts using materials that were locally available from their environment. This evidence can still be seen from the remnants of ancient houses. Most of the old town sheltering homes were not in a regular shape. This might be the result of the decisions made as to how the first boundary lines were decided. Document records of the ancient time suggests that early settlers had an idea of a close knit community, thus be in need of constructing their houses close-by. An unpredictable circumstances of this, along with first settlers having no plans for the future, is that these close-by houses still remain and future generations now have to deal with conventional space limitations of habitable space and narrow roads.

KISSARU
The approach of the design is to welcome and allow maximum interaction between its users by uninterrupted visual connection. To contribute by educating the locals and creating awareness of the islands traditional value and its vanishing culture. Also by opening opportunities for the elderly and most experienced to pass the skills to the younger generation. The circular form and the absence of straight lines of the structure gives respect to the “Kissaru. while the exterior of the structure gives respect to the development the boatbuilding industry have achieved while the interior creates awareness of what the locals are losing.

HEART
Design: The diverse people in the community is brought together which leads to interactions that will support in developing the community. The form of the design is originated from how a community is formed. In the floor level rectangles are used to representing people. Many people come together in order to form a community. People are formed from same concept but how we see each other and how we treat each other differentiates people. In order to show the diversity among people, the rectangles are extruded in different ways showing different shapes. Windows used are different from on another to represent the difference of personality among people. So as we see the design from out side the people will see four different views from four different angles. But as the person enters the design the illusion they had in their mind would be changed. The inside of the building is simple and linear.

CONNECTIVITY
The design used for the boat building school and accommodation is connectivity. It is evolved from the famous boats of Alifushi. A boat can be made through a lot of connections. One thing is universal when it comes to boat. They all have hull. The hull of a boat consists of internal network of frames that extend from side to side (Transverse) and that run the length of the boat longitudinal, covered by an outer shell plating usually made up of fibre glass. Without the hull there would be no boat. The purpose of the building is to create a strong boat building school with extra facilities while addressing the needs of the people and incorporating a sustainable design. The form of the design is achieved by using the hull and thwart of a boat. It is arranged on site by observing and preserving the features of context such as the existing trees. The outer shell of the structure is inspired from the thwart of a boat which helps people to circulate from one place to another and for storage. The thwart is used in such a way that spreads to the ground which eventually turn into benches. The building is designed in such a way that where the public and the students and interact with each other and create connections in between them.

DREAM INDOOR SPORT COMPLEX
“I have a dream, that one day this nation acts as a shelter, a source of strength which binds together our community together by sports. I have a dream that our community brings out its actual values, becomes transparent and lets out its true colors. The colors of the nations which rises through the thrill and love for sports. I have a dream...” Dream is a sports complex which functions through any type of weather or during any time of the whole day. Which means it must be very publicly open. It shouldn’t be hiding behind a set of cement walls. A complex which welcomes the community and shelters it. Alifushi is full of sports enthusiasts and sport loving residents. Sporting can be witnessed in Alifushi, the whole day and night. What’s missing in Alifushi is only a complex which binds this community together and revives the thrill and spirit of sports. Sport is the universal language that binds humans and brings all races, religion and countries together. Not only does it create a healthy life-style it also reduces crime and anti-social behavior. An enveloped complex that doesn’t obstruct views or natural light. This ENVELOPE (represents the spectator community) wraps over a SOLID structure (represents the athletic community) and gives the solid a covering, protection and strength. Here a Metal frame is used because of its strength and flexibility, metal is the ideal material to create the enveloped structure that binds the solid. For the solid structure, the most ideal material is concrete which itself has metal foundations to give strength to it.

Free flow inspired by the movement and behavior of people in Old town. A continuous flow is created by merging volumes together to create a world of continuous fluid movement. People move in all directions and through the houses as there are no boundary walls or planned paths. As a result people are more friendly and connected. This movement is best shown by the flow of water. Water flows freely in all directions unless restricted. When restricted water becomes destructive .To maintain a continuous flow, flowing volumes are created without corners or abrupt transitions that break the fluidity of its regular composition. The interior courtyards are a reflection of old town where courtyards create an internal world of continuous open spaces. Here, the architecture is no longer composed of rigid blocks, but instead comprised of volumes which merge to create a world of continuous mutual adaptation and fluid movement between each building. Large apertures for the main entrance and windows offer an appearance of tactility, creating a sense of intrigue on the street as the visitor approaches. Semi-enclosed spaces can be viewed through openings in walls. As a result, the visitor never feels enclosed in one space, but can always see beyond it into the space through overlapping and cutaway forms that enable a pleasing permeability to the spaces. Spaces flow from public to private while infusing interior spaces with air and natural light. It welcomes people and activity, creating a sense of restfulness and well-being while creating a sense of community. This complex aims to be a catalyst for reinvention and regeneration giving Alifushi an excellent opportunity to further develop and showcase their skills as the spearhead of boatbuilding.

A stream of water flowing through the organic stones, I sat on a boat floating, which sailed me around those stones. Some days were rough and the other days were calm. However I finished my journey through the twenty six atolls. Yes, is was the little floating object which connected me to this twenty six nodes. Boats have played a huge role in our lives for being who we are today. The idea of sailing through the atolls is translated to a physical form to convey a phenomenal vibe to the user. This iconic building is a form of micro demonstration of a macro context. The upper level demonstrates a boat passing by through the atolls without harboring. The lower level will allow the user to physically go into the spaces and experience it. The two void will address both rough storms and the bright sunrays which hits the boat while sailing. The organic form of separated spaces speaks the atolls and island formation of the Maldives. The building components of the complex will be of glass and concrete. Lower level ground will be a green free planned ground. The upper level is also a green platform which is a soft surface, used to contrast the hard material (concrete). R. Alifushi is well known for their skills and contribution in the profession of boat building. This will be most reciprocal land in the Maldives to place such an iconic structure which will be appreciated by both locals and foreigners. This iconic structure will preserve the knowledge of boatbuilding and its connection to us.

SCATTERED MAZE
A maze is created and spaces are arranged in the maze in unorganized irregular shapes. These spaces generate courtyard and gathering spaces within the building making the place more open and boundary less. The walk ways of the pedestrians are the paths formed in the old town. These are created by the pedestrians and the arrangement of the houses. The houses are arranged in an unorganized scattered pattern creating a huge maze within the old town. When looking into the early settled area the buildings are set in a way that it creates small courtyards between houses. These scattered organization, courtyards and maze is incorporated in the design in a form of the building.

MAJOR VESSEL MUSEUM
This dwelling is dominating center spacing and circulation of fishing vessel with main one structural support and the view gives the way that a person can see in fishing vessel. The Museum is divide in to three main zones, (exhibition and information area, activity area, office or privet area). These three zones are visually connected to the three-different area of the site, (exhibition and information area is connected to educational zone of the site, activity area is connected to the recreational zone of the site and privet area is connected to the main road of the site. ground floor has the two type of benches, (education and recreational). First floor has all privet spaces, like office, lobby etc. because the main entrance staircase is connected to the first floor. The second floor has all the exhibition and informational spaces because the masterplan, second priority gives to the educational zone. Third floor has the recreational activates because to connect all this with through activates. However, in Maldives 99% is ocean and boat is become major traveling vessel. R. Alifushi is first boat building island in Maldives. Boat building is one of the economical and major work of R. Alifushi. In early days fishing boats are the first major vessel built in R. Alifushi, it is used for fishing and traveling.

EDEN OF ALIFUSHI
Within the early settlers in Alifushi, prosperity and peace flourished the island making it a joyful and a tranquil place for the islanders. From the arrangement of the settlers to their beautiful gardens and agricultural land, the people Alifushi never had to depend on any other island. However, this is not the case in the present days in Alifushi. It has become a dependent island for fruit and vegetables and a more enclosed place within the individuals creating a boundary within each other. Due to the development of the island, more lands are used for buildings and structures making the once beautiful agricultural space destroyed leaving no shade and no sense of calmness in the environment in Alifushi. . A concept is derived from the reflection of the early settlers living lifestyle bringing a heavenly feeling to the islanders by designing an agricultural nursery in order to bring back the once serene atmosphere in the island. A place where people can gain knowledge about plants and trees and how to maintain them giving the benefit of everlasting production of fruits and vegetables within the islanders. A shop is designed which one can pluck their own fruits and vegetables to their own liking by walking on a glass walkway giving the sense of excitement and a feeling of walking in the air. This is a new experience for the islanders and also can be a tourist attraction which can gain income to the island which can in the future expand the agricultural sector within the island. An outdoor botanical garden is provided where one can relax and enjoy and interact with the nature. With different types of trees and flowers in different sections, it creates an enjoyable and a welcoming atmosphere. A stream of water passes through the botanical garden creating a cool atmosphere. The breath-taking scenery reflecting the idea of a heaven will bring the utmost peace in every aspect for the people in Alifushi.

First half of the project which was making a master plan for Alifushi thought me which factors to consider while designing a spatial layout for a land use plan. This will most certainly prove to be beneficial to me in the future. Since this portion was carried out as a group work, i have learned how to manage a group in a more organized manner.

Moreover its is to be noted the way of collecting information and method we applied were discussed in a group ,we chose the design space for each individual independently the concept exploring process was then done after choosing “social connectivity “ as a concept. After exploring the concept i decided to design visitors accommodation , caffe’ and shop as a part of my design. Through this process I have learned work with group ,and create master plan for a community .in addition i have learned exploring concept and design throng research and tutorials from lecturer. - HUSSAIN GASIM
Throughout the semester I have learn a lot, after a long break from the studies, it was a bit difficult to follow up, it took some time me to understand the design procedure. I have learn the different between space and place, how to derive the concept and develop the form using different approach. - AHMED LIFAQ AMIR

Since this was our first time designing a masterplan I learnt a great deal about the processes and important factors that has to considered while making the masterplan. I have also gained much knowledge about how a building can be sustainable. Also since there were a lot of different spaces, I have a better understanding of arrangement of spaces and designing experience within them.- AIMINATH NAJAHA

community and the project is divide in to three phases. First, we have to study the site and create site analysis and design a master plan for the given site. Site analyses and mater plan is a group work. After that we have to take a one building of the master plan that we design and developed, it is individual work. The aim of the semester is learning to work together and create something creative. Thought all this I learn the importance of team work and new methods that can used for when we work in a team, as in architecture life. This semester has been a very productive six month for me giving me a new sense of perception and clarity about architecture. This has been one of the most interesting project that I have done by designing an agricultural space for the people in Alifushi. With a lot of consideration, I chose to go with the concept of creating a heavenly feeling with the interaction vegetation, water features and materials used in the building. From the Gardens by the in Singapore to the quotes in the Quran about Heaven, ive designed a place that can provide the peace and tranquillity that the early settlers in Alifushi experienced which now lacks in the present hence the design. With the research that i did for this particular assignment, it expanded my knowledge in different aspects in architecture and life making me yearn more to seek and understand what more there is that architecture can give me in order for me to follow the dreams that I have to be a successful architect. One of the most important aspect that I have learnt is time management. How vital it is to manage time as an architect student. Hopefully, this experience will make me a better student and a better architect in the future. - FATHIMATH ZAHA ZUHOOR
During this semester I have expanded my knowledge in architectural design development through new approaches. Now I know how to develop a strong concept and use that concept to develop a form without limiting by the constraint of pragmatics. I have gained a new insight in sustainability and how it will affect the design after placing it in its context. - ISMAIL MURUSHID AHMED
