Controlling

Comparison, Envy & Fear It’s very easy to sit here and write a bunch of advice to people every month, quoting some zen philosophy and New Age jargon at people. Sometimes, it can be difficult to identify with gurus and coaches who give advice like “it’s all soooo easy” and as though their own lives are paved with lilacs - when every single day in your own life is a trial and every single moment presents as many opportunities, risks and mini-plot lines as a “choose your own adventure” novel. I may be a coach but I’m a seeker, just like you. Many of the things I write about in this column are trials that I go through and what I took away from that lesson or mistake...which I almost always seem to learn the hard way. I recently went through something that kind of forced me to take a step back and review patterns in everything from my thoughts, the way I react, my core beliefs and wants, and the reasons that some things go very well and others, go not-so-well (because of the way I perceive or react to events as they happen). When I stepped way back to try and pull the least common denominator, I found that the lessons that presented themselves reduced down to envy, fear and comparison. I think that if you simmer those down just a bit further, you can reduce them to a simple fear of not being good enough. 14 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

It ties back to our opinions of ourselves, or lack thereof, and it ties back to a fear that in some way we are not what we say we are, we are not good enough, we are not worthy. It starts with comparison. It moves into a form of envy and then we internalise it until we become fearful. If you want a quick ticket into the rabbit warren of sef-destruction, then these emotions are the fastest way there. I see these all around me, in offices, in clients and as I’ve said, even in myself. There are two exercises that I have found that help me get my head out of the clouds and centred, and I want to share these with you in the hopes that maybe you can identify what you’re feeling and intervene before you send yourself into a cycle of emotions that ruin your day, your projects, or relationships with others. Even if they are your competitors or expartners or people who have burned you. The first, is to take time to notice and improve your breathing. Are you taking in enough and are you releasing it fully? If you’re anxious or angry, it will be shallow. If you want to connect breathing with your thoughts, visualise breathing in compassion, and breathing out love. The second is to take 2 minutes to identify objects around you and feel thankful they are there. “I am so thankful for the ceiling in this room - millions of people around the world have no ceiling” always helps if you’re struggling to start. Once you do, you’ll find that you actually have achieved more than some. Filling up your own “love tank” in this kamikaze way can help bring about accidental feelings of compassion, and those feelings can and will bring to you peace BEFORE your melt down.

“I love jewelry. I am happy for women to make a connection to a piece that can reflect their unique sense of self. I want to encourage women to get what they want! Long gone are the days of waiting for occasion or reason to be recognized. There is no need to ignore our own wants.” 18 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

When I left my steady job for maternity leave I never imagined that as the months ahead played out that this would be the last steady job I would see with security for the next decade. Being left without an income and relying on my spouse left me feeling financially vulnerable, worthless, purposeless and desperate. I was an art teacher at a middle school. It’s not a perfect job, but when you graduate with a Bachelors in Fine Arts there are few options for a secure future. This was the one option. I came alive to engage students and have them think about ordinary things in an extraordinary way, to see them unfold into expression and use their creativity. As the business of education shifted, many special area teachers have had their positions eliminated. I am not alone. There is little consolation to think that all those years in the best art schools in the country, and no one ever mouthed a word about creating a living or turning your talents into careers. The romantic notion of the fine artist was never burst, never challenged. The unspoken fantasy of being ‘noticed’ and being made famous or rich by a stray gallery representative was as unlikely as a high school baseball player in the United States having no other plan than to be discovered and swooped right off to the major leagues. All that tuition paid and here I sat unemployed and unprepared. Shame on them, shame on me. There was no plan B. I would never pay for my children to go to art school. Nope. I love art, art is a necessary and vital component of a country and its culture throughout all history. It is how we define ourselves. It also cannot alone pay the bills. Others I ran into over time would shake their head in disbelief that even with all the talent they knew I had that there was no one willing to give me a job. frustrated the hell out of me. As far as creatives go I found the public also has no realistic idea of what viable skills we offer. But that was right, no one was going to pay me to sit in my studio and paint all day or create jewelry. I ask you, when was the last time you bought an original painting from an artist for your home? Enough said. Before I graduated with a Bachelors in Fine Art I spent my early years as a jewelry major learning metal smithing and setting stones. I have always kept my hand in creating jewelry for myself. Surely there was a tangible plan here to create an income. Women buy jewelry all the time. This was my inspired thought and I jumped in with both feet. So in 2006 I spent a few hundred dollars and bought bag of semi precious stones and decided I was going to sell jewelry at craft fairs and solve my cash flow issues. Apparently this was also the plan of 90% of the vendors at every craft fair I had ever stepped foot in. Over the years I built up to working fairs and exhibits from April to October, almost 30 a year. It was an awful plan.

“I literally gave up for a few years on craft fairs and tried to settle into my fine art painting. I am not sure what was harder. ” Can you think of a worse business model? My daughter was 3 and my son 7. I decided I was going to voluntarily work the most precious family hours of the week and holidays and be off when they are away at school and work. I don’t mind putting the nose to the grind stone but my determination and physical persistence burnt out. For the little extra money I was able to accumulate my family and life was out of balance. The kids didn’t see both their parents in the same room for months. My husband was in, I was out. When I was home, he was at work. Communication diminished and the routine of daily life was in turmoil. Craft Fairs and other Cover Story: April DeMarco - Her Life & Business •

exhibits like these are no guarantee. Maybe I should have been a promoter? Rain or shine, crowds or crickets, these guys get paid. I can’t tell you how many times I loaded the car with my entire wall display, tent, tables and wares, and drove far in the dark of the new day before the sun came up and stood in fowl weather, cold, hungry, dehydrated, wet, and over exhausted, only to pack up and come home again in the dark of the end of the same day without making a dime.

I literally gave up for a few years on craft fairs and tried to settle into my fine art painting. I am not sure what was harder. Let’s talk about the social art scene for just a moment. Did you enjoy high school? If you say you did then I am likely to think you might have been one of the cool kids. I was not one of the cool kids, and so high school was not so enjoyable in the way of feeling like one never belonged. Have you walked into a gallery in the past ten years? If this industry were like any other in the sales industry there wouldn’t be a single gallery left in the world. The last gallery I walked represented many. I walk in. The person at the desk at the back of the room does not raise their head to acknowledge my existence, or out of sheer politeness addresses my presence with a greeting. Right away I am made to feel as if I interrupted their space. I look around at the art and try to settle in. I make directed communication with the human at the desk and inquire about the art and the artist. I am pointed by the flip flaccid hand to a copy of paper with titles of artworks on them. Ok, I play along. There are no prices for the work listed! Are they or are they not trying to sell this art? How hard do they have to make it for one to be enticed to spend money. Heck, Walmart tries harder than this to get me to throw dish soap in my cart and bring it home. Now I have to insist based on sheer merit, so I brazenly address the human again, “Excuse me, what is the price of this painting?”. The human raised her finger up as if to request I wait a moment and went into the abyssful “back”, not to return for 20 minutes. I left. 22 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

I wonder what the ‘human at the desk’ would make of this, now? 23

If you think that getting your work into a gallery is anymore inviting. Think again. Local arts organizations will have members who pay dues and fees and invite them to a group show once a year and we all pat ourselves on the back telling each other how great we are... in this prefabricated bubble. Sigh... I close down my studio in town after living this unfulfilling game and try to reconcile that surely there is a gift in being home unemployed. I am sure so many women would cut off their right breast to be able to stop working and keep house, attentively watching their children grow. After several years we surely learned to get on without my additional income. What more did I want? What was wrong with me? Why wasn’t I happy? I was depressed. I felt no pride in perfectly pressed linens. In the meantime there were sadly droves of others from all areas of life feeling the pain of the recessions’ corporate downgrading, from the top dogs to the bottom rung. People were down and out all over, realizing they too had been duped in the security of a pay check that once served them and reminded of the obvious neglect for a backup plan.

“Women were told to be gentle in our expectations of our man’s ability to even perform in bed during this time. Holy freaking crap, did I really hear that? You bet. I guess society never really had any expectations for me as the woman...” What irritated me most was the constant sympathization for the male ego, and what it did detrimentally to a man’s sense of self and identity to not be bringing home the paycheck to provide for his family any longer. I am all down with that but trust me, each time I saw a morning news segment with a panel of therapists to

talk about coaching oneself through joblessness, it made me throw up because it flat out ignored that women have these feelings too. Women were told to be gentle in our expectations of our man’s ability to even perform in bed during this time. HOLY FREAKING CRAP, did I really hear that? You bet. I guess society never really had any expectations for me as the woman, once I had children anyway, to be an equal contributor to the family in the way of finances. Do I have to work? YES, yes I do. I am a worker. Is the grass green? It is something you know about yourself in one fashion or another. I thrive on the workplace purpose, being able to contribute and see my affect. I am alive in this frame of identity. More maternal, devotional women in my family who take care as full time mothers tried their best to console me of the noble and meaningful role I have. God bless them all. Full time caretaker is like death by house arrest for me.

This only seemed to make me feel more that I had no feeling of belonging or purpose. All that jazz I get from being productive in a career amounts to zilch?

2013

I kept a ceramic jar on top of my dresser where I kept all my spare cash from rogue sales here and there of art and jewelry I had made. My system was akin to that of a seven year old saving for the ice cream man. It wasn’t sophisticated but it was my jar of hope. I took the few thousand dollars I had in there and invested it all madly to find out what I didn’t know. What didn’t I know all along about making a living doing what I love? What didn’t I know about taking my talent and turning it into a business? Why had I spun my wheels all this time while I sat and listened to fables of masters in

the marketplace, on the internet finding a way to reach people from their studios and mail-off packages while collecting an income? I cannot tell you how mad this drove me. I was certain there was

“I want to encourage you to stop being cheap, if this is your underlying affliction, as it was mine for many of the years that I could not get ahead to have my own thriving business.” a trick being played on me and the answers everyone else seem to find were always slipped and passed by me like the ball at a school yard game of keep away. I was tired and I had it. I was done with asking and begging and imposing on the kindness of friends and strangers to take me on and help me figure out the elements to essential entrepreneurship, that I had not yet acquired in my path. I was never going to make it until I seriously paid someone to teach me what I did not know. If you are going to hit up a favor from a friend to create your website, you will come last after their paying customers, you will not get what you want as it is impolite to insist and be demanding to someone who is helping you out, and it possibly still won’t function for you as you needed. I am sure you have been there; maybe you are in that position right now. I got so flipping tired of being stuck that I finally freed myself with spending all I had. Do you know what happened next? Being a paying client comes with such unimaginable power that charity does not bring. From the beginning of my new paid for education in business, I was given the respect of the long full explanation to the detailed know how and the step by step play to create a plan that was all about me. I want to encourage you to stop being cheap, if this is your underlying affliction, as it was mine for many of the years that I could not get ahead to have my own thriving business. Picking Passion

Over Security

In a career, can you really pick passion over security, and should you? This is a question EVERY entrepreneur faces at least once if not regularly. Let’s face it, if we knew without a doubt that we would soar instead of crash and burn or that we would be in a position FIND ME ONLINE HERE

to financially support ourselves while we pursued our passions we would, no questions asked or contemplated. We would probably leap head first off the cliff into our passion but sometimes it isn’t really the smartest way to begin. Let’s break it down and see if we really can follow our hearts and pursue our passions without being classified at girlfriend book club as “a little woo woo” and “off your rocker” a bit. So often I hear women describe the art or act of following their passion as something extra, as something playful and without substance or worse as something distracting. It has a tendency to get lumped into a category of an extra or something that is only reserved for the free spirit or the ultra creative. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Passions are necessary, they are not trivial and come from your soul. Passions are parts of who you are and are deeply embedded into your joy maker.

“Passion (from the Latin verb patī meaning to suffer) is a term applied to a very strong feeling about a person or thing. Passion is an intense emotion compelling, enthusiasm, or desire for anything…” Who doesn’t want to be enthusiastic about their work or have a compelling feeling as they contribute to the world? The answer is no one! So before you go reading on and figuring out where you land with following your heart and passion let me just sum it all up by saying YES and resounding YES, you MUST follow your passion. This doesn’t mean call in and quit your job or sell all your possessions to go make art in the woods. What it means is that your heart’s longing, the stuff that bubbles up in you and creates joy for your soul, your passion, is NECESSARY for you to become who you are supposed to be! Picking Passion Over Security •

Let’s take a “responsible look at passion for a moment” There are a few places you can find yourself, you can either be new to the world of entrepreneurship, you can be smack in the middle of it but feeling unfulfilled, or you can be cranking it out and feel fulfilled but possibly feel as if you are being pulled to go in a new direction. Let me break each scenario down for you and leave you with some insight.

New kid on the block

If you are new to the world of entrepreneurship it is easy to believe that you can follow your passion and when you do the money will follow. Chances are this is not how it will work out for you. No matter what, as with all entrepreneurs, you need to have a solid business plan in place. There are three questions you will need to ask and answer for yourself before you leap off the cliff.

1 2 3

What is my passion and how does it translate into value for the world? Who is my market? What unique value sets me apart from others in this or a similar market place?

Entrepreneur “off” You are smack in the middle

of pursuing your entrepreneurial dreams but something is off. Typically, when I hear an entrepreneur say this to me it is coming from one of two places, and sometimes both. One, is either a lack 30 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

of income coming in for them and or two, is that they are over extended. If you find yourself in this place what is it for you, one or two? Let’s take a time out for a moment and get back to your roots. What was it that made you want to become an entrepreneur? What was your ideal impact and contribution to the world going to be? Where did you get off course? Many times my clients got off course because they simply did what we have all done. They started listening to too many “experts”. STOP doing that. If you have been cranking it out for a long time and at one point had your game face on and were rocking it then you know it is there. It is inside of you already. Your business plan was working. Go back on the time line where you began, adding, deleting, listening to others rather than yourself, pinpoint that shift and begin from there. In my kids recess they call this a “do over”... you know how to play the game so don’t get freaked out, just simply slow down, stop listening to outside influences and start listening to the key influence and know-er in your life... you. Please hear me, I am not saying don’t seek advice from wise and respectful counsel, like a coach. BUT what I am saying is stop letting others and their ideas or thoughts trump yours. Don’t let them drown out your own voice. You’re head smart and your body is smart, it will lead you down the right path.

Eek, I am being pulled Are you LOVING your

work and your contribution into the world but feeling exhausted; physically pulled? If yes, chances are you are off track with your passion seeking mission and you are saying yes much more than you are saying no. Kudos to you if you are fulfilled in your work. Statistics say not many are. Consider yourself one of the lucky ones. However, if you Picking Passion Over Security •

31

are feeling physically depleted, tired, not quite yourself or maybe a little uncreative when you need to be more so, then you are most likely off track with what your really passionate about.

How do you feed and nurture your passion?

1

2 3

Go back to the beginning. Can you even articulate

what your passion is? If you haven’t done this in a long time or you can’t then take some time to sit with yourself and think about what you remember you were once passionate about. When was the last time you spent time focused or working on that passion? It is likely that you haven’t practiced or participated in your passion for sometime. Set an appointment, one that can not be broken by anything or anyone and work on your passion. The time will be well spent as your creative soul will begin to get fed once again.

Listen to your body. Your body has an amazing ability

to try to direct you back to your passion. Back to the things and activities that bring you joy, enthusiasm, that compel you create. I have known this first hand many, many times. I have had to learn to not jump into making decisions about my work quickly but to take in the information, let it sit with my soul and body and see what bubbles up. If it isn’t right my body knows before my head. I feel it. You will too.

Meditate. Sounds simple enough but for most it is hard.

If you are a “doer” I would suggest two things. Start by trying a walking meditation. Go alone. No pets, no kids, no friends and no cell phone. Second, if you find that you can not turn off your brain, try listening to a meditative app. I like Napuru – the ocean waves.

4

Set new boundaries for yourself. Each day for one month ask yourself what you can delete from your “to do” list or work and what you can add into your life that supports your passion pursuit.

Following your passion is AWESOME and it does offer massive security. Maybe not security the way you or others have thought about it, but it does offer ample benefit. The security doesn’t always show up in the form of a set schedule, a cubicle, parking space no. 9, health insurance, or knowing what you will earn every two weeks. Sometimes security shows up as peace within, as less stress, as joy, as feeling like you matter, contributing to the world, and that you are getting to call your own shots. You are the only one that can decide how to pursue your passion and gain security at the same time, but it can be done.

Filling up the well of your soul and pursuing your passion, wether it is full time or part time, is essential for you to show up in this world as the person you know you are, the person you want to be, and to have an impact for others. Picking Passion Over Security •

Link Love: How to display chosen image icons for links posted online, especially on Facebook

FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Katie Geddes 34 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Pretty Links = Engaged Readers

Ever been frustrated by posting a link on Facebook or elsewhere online and having the icon for the link come up awfully wrong? Or blank? I’m going to help you solve this small piece of online torture. It’s important no matter whether you’re linking to your own beloved website, opt-in page, fantastic article or pie-eating contest you just won. You need people to know what you’re talking about, not get some random, irrelevant, incorrect image or be confused. Make cute links. It’s worth it. As an entrepreneur, you’re likely putting a lot of time and heart into your creations. Make sure your valuable message gets seen as you intend it.

Clarity is Key

Have you heard this wisdom: “a confused mind doesn’t buy.” When people are confused, they turn away. It doesn’t just apply to buying situations. It applies to any time you’re looking to engage your audience. And if you think about it, aren’t you always looking to engage your audience? Why else would you put information out there? I want your charm to show. So let’s get you pretty links now. Embody Your Sexy Geek: Link Love •

35

There’s Art in Your Heart Consider going one step further by creating beautiful, fun link icons that will delight your audience even more than a default image from your post. Show some love for your audience, why not? Once you’ve created your desired icon, here’s how to get it to show up correctly when you post your link online.

Image Size & Format Your link image must be in a .png, .jpg or .gif format to display properly online. Facebook requires your icon to be at least 200 x 200 pixels.

Sexy geek bonus tip: I’ve had it act buggy at 200 square so go for 222 x 222 pixels for no problems. Facebook will insert its own sizing rules depending on where you are posting but the source image requires this minimum sizing.

“Open Graph” Tag For curious, budding sexy geeks, the solution in coding is to create “open graph” or “og” meta tags. You’ll be telling search engines and Facebook to find the right tag for your links using this code. It’s easy.

How to Do It: Using Coding For those comfortable with HTML/CSS and if you know how to edit the code of your site, here’s all you have to do. Place this “open graph” code between the “head” tags on any page you are linking to: 36 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

<meta property=”og:image” content=”http://URLto-your-image-file”> You can repeat this for multiple images, which is wonderful if you’ll be linking to this page often. This means you’ll have a choice which icon to use every time you post this link.

How to Do It: Using Wordpress Plug-Ins

With Wordpress, it’s widely recommended to use a plug-in to accomplish the correct linking. You could edit your theme’s functions.php file and paste the code within the php tags. But many WordPress users are not programmers so plug-ins make it easy. There are numerous plug-ins that accomplish your goal of greatlooking links, in free or paid versions. Either way, no more link shame. Here are a few options:

Yoast

Facebook Open Graph Protocol Mimetypes Link Icons

SEO Friendly Images

See It Instantly on Facebook

If you don’t complete this part, Facebook will pick up your links when they crawl the web every few days but there’s a delay. Go to Embody Your Sexy Geek: Link Love •

37

this link, click “debug” and your changes will be instantaneous: https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug Enter the site or page you’ve created a link for and voila, debugged. This tool is called the Facebook URL Linter. Awesome for people frequently updating pages. There you have it. Go forth and link.

Clarity

In Caves

FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Sandra Cunningham 42 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Late last year, as winter was approaching, I decided there was only one thing for it. It was time for me to go into my cave. That’s metaphorically speaking, of course. You see, as years go, 2013 was more challenging than most, both personally and professionally. By October, and although I seemed to be functioning, I was at a very low ebb. I was stuck and yearned for a way out. Yet I couldn’t see any escape. I was lost, bewildered and frankly, fed up. This sort of thing happens in all of our lives... Yes, coaches too!

Trusting in Nature This time, I thought I would do more than listen to my own advice. Nature can teach us so many lessons. And it was with this in mind that I decided to play with the idea of hibernation and restoration. Instead of struggling through as I would do normally, I stopped pretending. I stopped trying so hard. I stopped listening to the incessant voices chattering in my head. I stopped trying to have it all figured out. I allowed my natural instincts to guide me, and in their truest wisdom, they let me know what was needed. I slowed down. I rested. I travelled. I spent a lot of time in the natural outdoors. I tended to my own needs, and to my development. I spent time with inspiring people, and especially those I love, and I started once more to see and feel appreciation for my life and the opportunities it holds. Eventually, amidst a new sense of calm, I began to hear my intuition speaking to me, more loudly and clearly than Clarity in Caves •

43

ever. This time, there was no mindless chatter. No ambiguity, no doubt, and no fear. With renewed energy, focus and confidence, I felt like ‘me’ again, and I was finally able to make choices that just felt natural, easy, and right.

Coming Home As of January 5th, I have now moved back to my home country after 16 years away, and I have re-connected with my life’s dream. This time, more fully and authentically than ever before. Sometimes, just as it is for the trees, plants and animals, the signs are there, screaming out to us that all we need is to ‘go away’ for a while, find calm, do our work, tend to our needs and ‘re-enter’ when the timing feels right. We can then come back to ourselves. We re-discover who we are, and we remember what we’re really all about, and once again, we really are ‘home.’ This time, renewed, revitalised and ready to take our dreams into the world. Let me ask, where do you go to find your clarity? Do you have a ‘cave’? Maybe you meditate. Walk in nature? Lie on a beach?

Sending you my warmest wishes until next time.

When Intent

Is Confused I wonder how easy it is to expect others to know our intent, without us making the right efforts to share that intent at all. It’s something I’m very guilty of. I have full and complete expectation that unless I’m being serious, you will appreciate that most of what I say is meant lightly and low in seriousness. It’s a massively unfair expectation because when others misunderstand what I’ve said, I know it’s because of how I’ve said my piece. It’s really easy to believe you’re acting with the right intent, but how do I recognise your intention if I don’t know you?

FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Sukh Pabial 46 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

It’s a very real problem facing anyone who wants to send out a message of some sort. The message needs to relay the intent of the person and/or organisation. It’s also a very real problem facing anyone dealing in customer service. How do you show positive intent when dealing with an irate customer? I heard something interesting the other day that if you get past the noise, then you can focus on the intent. That’s a real challenge if you’re facing a range of emotions that you have to deal with. So for me there’s something about honesty and authenticity in this thing about showing up. I show up when I’m having conversations – but if I’m not displaying the right behaviours, using the right language, and being true to myself, how can you know what my intent is? It’s why corporate messaging in corporate speak doesn’t work and falls on flat ears. It’s why e-learning gets such a bad rap when it’s poorly designed. It’s why people get irate with each other when they’re trying to achieve things. It’s why the performance management system is broken. It’s why employee engagement gets a regular hammering. The intent is always the right thing to do, but the actions and behaviours don’t chime, and it all becomes more difficult. There’s also something for me about my own self-awareness, self-regulation and how mindful I am of my current situation. That combination of awareness means I should be able to better show up and display my intent in the desired way.

I’m no closer to a round up of thinking on this one. It’s just a selection of thoughts. When Intent is Confused •

These People Imagine a time and a place where People will only

love themselves, their money and the things they can acquire. Imagine a place where everyone is boastful and proud. A place where people mock God and the things of God. Imagine a time where kids are disobedient to their parents and totally ungrateful. Nothing would be off limits to these people. They would be unloving and unforgiving. They tear one another down and have no self control. The people hate what is good and they are rude and mean. They turn their backs on one another and lack any sort of loyalty. The people are filled with pride and lust and they crave their own pleasure and lack any sort of passion for the Lord - the I AM. The people will be “religious”— even claim the title of Christian—but they refuse to submit to the Power that sanctifies their hearts and glorifies their Creator. These kinds of people should be avoided! These are the kinds of people

who captivate those women whose hearts are blind to the Truth and are quick to “...we have to stop seek out new teachings. excusing behaviors These counterfeit teachers and actions that have deceitful, evil minds. They desire to lead others the Bible never down the broad path and has and never will through the wide gate. excuse.” Some day—perhaps one day soon—these people who hide behind their masks and smoke and mirrors, will be exposed as they stand naked in the shadow of the cross. (2 Timothy 3:1-7, Katie’s version)

We are taught in 2 Timothy 3 to avoid these people, but these people are saturating our culture. WE ARE

THESE PEOPLE. Precious Body of Christ, we have to stop excusing behaviors and actions that the Bible never has and never will excuse. Instead, we seek out a religion that feels good and unoffensive. We sugar coat, omit and edit a genuine relationship with Jesus. We don’t want God’s Word to sound too convicting, so we rephrase it, redecorate it and rename it to make it comfortable and appealing. But the gospel is convicting. Jesus’s audacious, crazy love for me makes me uncomfortable at times. He came for the sick, the dirty, the sinful and spiritually disgusting - and I am one of the filthiest people I know.

As a mom, I adore watching my babies grow and develop. I imagine our Father adores watching us grow

and mature, too. When Mercy was born she had issues eating and even one ounce was an accomplishment in the first few hours of her life, but now the baby who needed to be trained to eat, chugs down milk like a hungry pig. All babies love milk because it meets their needs, satisfies their appetite, and takes away the hunger Christian Columnist: Katie Clifton - These People •

and ache inside them. But as babies grow, so do their appetites and they require more and more to fulfill them. Somehow we have become a society and generation who is just spiritually content with the “milk.” There is so much more the Lord has for you and I, and we were created for more. There is nothing transformational about being stagnant. You can not move staying still and you can not grow if you are not planted in Christ. Friends, go back with me to 2 Timothy 3:7:

“Such women are forever following new teachings, but they are never able to understand the truth.” Knowledge is the weapon that destroys deception. We have become this generation of women that seems to be content with riding the comfortable, culturally mainstream current of conveinece rather than to allow ourselves to be pounded, reshaped and made new by the fountain of living water. Our Creator is a pursuing God. He interferes with our

lives in beautiful ways. He meets us in our brokeness, rebellion, shame, and pride and interjects Himself into our lives. He barges into our lives because He is full of love and absolute rightousness. The Lord is pursuing a generation of women who will not follow convienent Christianity. He is calling out to a generation of women who will love the world He created, with reckless abandon while being anchored in His Holy Word so that they will live among the lost, yet not live like the lost.

54 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Sweet friends, it is time to give up the milk because we have

been made to crave the bread that was broken and the wine that was poured out for us. We cannot serve two masters. There is a deluding influence in our lives and the stench of the enemy upon us...lingers.

“Don’t waste your time on useless work, mere busywork, the barren pursuits of darkness. Expose these things for the sham they are. It’s a scandal when people waste their lives on things they must do in the darkness where no one will see. Rip the cover off those frauds and see how attractive they look in the light of Christ. Wake up from your sleep, Climb out of your coffins; Christ will show you the light! So watch your step. Use your head. Make the most of every chance you get. These are desperate times!” (Eph 5:11-16 MSG)

Move past the milk. He has prepared a feast. It takes surrender. He requires your obedience. The passionate gospel of grace will hurt your feelings. Your toes will get stepped on. He will comfort you. Life will get messy. He will anchor you.

Amen x

What Are You

Afraid Of?

Everyone gets scared. Even the most spiritual, successful

people we know face their moments of fear. The key is to not be defined by your fear, but rather by your mastery of it. Enclosed are my favorite quotes about conquering fear as you move towards your dreams.

“I will not die an unlived life. I will not live in fear of falling or catching fire. I choose to inhabit my days, to allow my living to open me, to make me less afraid, more accessible, to loosen my heart until it becomes a wing, a torch, a promise. I choose to risk my significance; to live so that which comes to me as seed goes to the next as blossom and that which comes to me as blossom, goes on as fruit.” Dawna Markova

“The amateur believes he must first overcome his fear; then he can do his work. The professional knows that fear can never be overcome. He knows there is no such thing as a fearless warrior or a dread-free artist.” Steven Pressfield

Freshly Scrubbed

For Spring! I’m overly optimistic in March. Ignoring the reality of cold, drizzly days, I turn my thoughts to the warmer weather around the corner. I want to lighten up, warm up, eat fresher foods and get ready to show some skin!

That’s why March is the month for a good scrub. Body, face, feet - what part of your body couldn’t do with a little buff and polish to get glowing for Spring? The idea of a scrub is simple - it scrubs off the outer layer of dead, dry or flaky skin, revealing the newer, smoother skin underneath. The exfoliation action happens either through a physical scrubbing action (ground up nuts, seeds, little beads or a rough cloth) - or through a chemical exfoliaton action (alpha-hydroxy acids or their more natural cousin, fruit acids.) By Amanda Cook 64 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

However you do it - a scrub should leave your skin glowing and soft - not red and irritated! You don’t need to scrub vigorously or with a really grainy, rough scrub to get good results. Gentle exfoliation a couple of times per week is the best approach for most people.

Here are some of the scrubs I’m loving this spring Organic Surge Skin Perfecting Face Polish This creamy scrub includes finely ground olive stones to gently exfoliate, even for sensitive skin. It contains rosemary and lemon essential oils to purify the skin, chamomile to soothe and almond oil to rehydrate. RRP £6.49

EDITOR’S FAVORITE: Herbfarmacy Exfoliating Cleanser This is my favorite scrub of the spring. A creamy exfoliating cleanser, it contains soft jojoba beads and white clay which give a silky-smooth feeling - not scratchy or rough at all! This cleanser includes organic extracts of marshmallow and calendula as well as apricot kernel oils. And it’s made right here in the UK. What’s not to love? RRP £15.00 Freshly Scrubbed For Spring •

65

Polish Sugar Exfoliating Buff This sugar-based scrub by Authentic Skin Remedies is more scrubby than the previous two. Instead of a daily cleanser, I’d use this as a weekly deep clean. Apparently men also love it as a face scrub to prepare for shaving! I used this as a body scrub, and it worked really well. Nice texture that doesn’t dissolve too quickly, but rinses away clean. RRP $39.00 USD

MVO Exfoliating Moisture Mask This is the luxury exfoliating mask. It has a lush texture (thanks to the avocado butter), and is completely smooth when you put it on - the exfoliation comes from lactic acid. Massage it onto your face and let it sit for several minutes before rinsing. This mask smells divine and gave me a nice smooth glow in less than 5 minutes. RRP $90 USD

Smooshed in a middle seat in the deepest, darkest corner of Economy on a plane is a far cry from the golden age of travel.

natural

health & beauty.

I love to travel. I hate flying. It’s a problem. (Especially living an ocean away from my family!). Part of my hatred is because I still can’t believe that planes can fly, and am convinced we’re going to crash at the slightest turbulence. The other part of my hatred is because of the hassle of airports, security, endless waits, delays, expenses and the fact that I always seem to catch a cold from a long flight! Why do we seem to catch a cold on a plane flight? Two reasons: dry air, and lots of people in a confined space. At high altitudes, the air doesn’t have as much moisture in it, which dries out your respiratory system and makes it more susceptible to germs.

What can you do to stay healthy while flying? As a last touch, being the product junkie that I am, I now bring a homemade facial mist. In my less-green days I used an evian facial spray, or even more expensively, one of the fancy face spray products made for plane travel. But now I make my own. It’s super simple, you can customize the scent, and packs a double-punch of being antibacterial AND relaxing.

Victoria’s Secret Angels, Alessandra Ambrosio and Behati Prinsloo, visit LA during Los Angeles Fashion Week to celebrate Victoria’s Secret 2014 Swim Collection on March 11, 2014. Alessandra and Behati went from blowing kisses to waving their arms in the air as they walked by their fans who stood in the line at the Victoria’s Secret Store in Beverly Center, Beverly Hills, California. Before the event kicked off, the models snapped a couple of selfies with their fans and posted on Victoria’s Secret twitter and instagram accounts. As DJ Lindsay Luvs spinned beats throughout the evening, I got a chance to interview the international Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com •

supermodel Alessandria and Behati about LA Fashion Week. For the past eight seasons, LAFW has increasingly gained attention from celebrities, stylists and magazine editors. Since LAFW is fairly new, I was eager to find out how Victoria’s Secret models feel about it and what their thoughts are. “I love LA Fashion Week” replied Alessandra with a smile. “I actually attended a couple of the shows and absolutely loved it!” Meanwhile, Behati looked at me agreeing with what Alessandra mentioned and said “...Love LA Fashion week!”

I must say, it’s always nice to get an endorsement on LA Fashion Week from the hottest Victoria’s Secret Supermodels. Alessandra (32) and Behati (24) displayed their playful sides as they posed to take a picture with me. Naturally, I couldn’t wait to post it to my Facebook, Twitter and Instagram account. As for the Victoria’s Secret 2014 Swim Collection, my best swimsuit pick goes to “The Gorgeous” swimwear. This is definitely

a trendy hot pink and made-to-be noticed swimwear. Not only does it add 2 cups of halter top, but it also features supersoft padding for the maximum lift and cleavage for the Fashionistas who want to go two sizes up. The perfect push-up and bikini feature flirty peek-aboo keyholes for added allure. I wrapped up the evening by doing a bid of shopping of my own from Victoria’s Secret and purchased “The Gorgeous” swimwear.

Alessandra Ambrosio was the first ambassador for the Victoria’s Secret Pink line, launching the brand at a nationwide tour in 1999. She has also been the brand ambassador of many notable fashion brands including Dolce and Gabbanna, Loewe, Mischino, GUESS, Revlon, Christian Dior, Giorgio Armani, Armani Exchange, Rolex, Oscar de la Renta, Escada, Calvin Klein and Raulph Lauren. She has walked in shows for some of the biggest designers in fashion including Dolce and Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, Prada, Louis Vuitton and Giles Deacon. Alessandra has been featured on the cover of Elle Magazine, her first of 70 international magazine covers. She has also appeared on Love, numerous Vogues, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Elle, Russh, Numero, Rolling Stone, GQ and Marie Claire, to name but a few.

Behati Prinsloo is the face of the Victoria’s Secret sub-brand Pink and Victoria’s Secret Angel.

Spring Forward With PowHERful Living!

By Charlene SanJenko

We all want to look and feel our very best. We want to belong, to feel needed, respected and remembered. We’re goal-driven, purpose-driven and mission-driven. So how do we ensure our lives our lives are powHERful? And what can we do this Spring to stay in the flow or as we call it, The Practice? And what’s the correlation to feeling powHERful physically as well as in other areas of our lives? According to author John Izzo, Ph.D., knowing is just the beginning. It’s not enough to know. We must put it into practice.

“Think of all of the things we know and fail to act on… For example, consider the research findings about patients with coronary artery disease (blocked arteries). After having procedures to save their lives, or even having near-death experiences, these patients are asked to make rather a stark choice: Change or die. Faced with the almost certain knowledge that blocked arteries will kill them if they don’t change their lifestyle, almost all of them, we think, would change. Change or die is a pretty straightforward choice. But the research shows that over 70% fail to make changes.” This tells us that for many of us it is at least as important to know how to live powHERfully as it is to know the aspects involved. In our online transformation, PowHERful Living explored a progressive 90 day program in lifestyle and leadership. We begin with the most fundamental building blocks. We start at the beginning. I believe that when you boil it all down, women want three things: Spring Forward With PowHERful Living •

What are your values? What values are most important to you? How do they show up in your life? What do you need to experience in your life on a consistent basis in order feel fulfilled?

I encourage you to give this some thought this Spring. Make your own Values Star and leave it up where you can see it. Allow it to guide your weekly planning and daily actions. Part of developing good taste is becoming aware of the characteristics of the stuff we see and buy and use. Become conscious of color and form and function. Learn to spot the designer’s hard work in simplifying things. It’s the big reason Posh Brats products are so loved and coveted: good, simple, elegant design. I also think it’s one of the main reasons why so many people are flocking to Etsy and buying handmade items....they are just classier and more beautiful than mass-produced crap.

“If you mention taste nowadays, a lot of people will tell you that - Made in feels England “taste is subjective.” They believe this because it really that way to them. Overfed But Undernourished

9 Signs You’re

Nutrient Deficient

As a nutritionist, I know one thing’s for sure: the road to chronic disease often begins on our plate! While many people turn to pills for relief, the downside of this strategy is that meds often address symptoms rather than treat the root cause(s) of disease.

Here are nine signs that your lack of health and happiness might actually be a nutrient deficiency: FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Nathalie de Ahna 78 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

1. You’re suffering from anxiety and depression

According to the National Institutes of Health, about 21 million American adults suffer from a mood disorder every year. A deficiency in the following nutrients may be linked to anxiety and depression: B vitamins, biotin, vitamin C, vitamin D, calcium, chromium, selenium, omega-3 fatty acids, and iron.

2. Your bones are weak

No matter how old you are, strong bones are vital to feeling fit and healthy. If you have troubles in this department, you might be lacking: vitamins A, vitamin C, vitamin D and vitamin K, copper, chromium, zinc, magnesium, and molybdenum.

3. You have brittle hair & nails, or hair loss

It doesn’t matter if you’re male or female, beautiful hair and nails are really nice to have. If you’re not too happy with yours, you could be needing vitamins B5, B6, B12, biotin, or chlorine.

4. You’re tired all the time

Do you sometimes feel like you want to do so much but are just too tired to do anything? Fatigue is a huge problem for many of us and keeps us from living life to the fullest. If you’re lacking energy, you might be missing: vitamins B1, B3, B11, B12, vitamin C, vitamin D, biotin, iron, potassium, or magnesium.

5. You’re experiencing hyperactivity/ADHD

Sometimes meds are necessary to help you calm your mind. But maybe you’re lacking attention and calm “simply” because you are deficient in: vitamins B1, B2, B5, E, omega-3 fatty acids, iron, magnesium, or zinc.

6. You have poor immunity, or you experience infections often Nobody wants to be sick all-the time or constantly deal with

inflammation or infections. A strong immune system can fend off a lot and help you heal. If your body’s defense is constantly letting you down, however, it may be calling for vitamins A, C, D & E, chromium, selenium, magnesium, or zinc.

7. You have skin troubles

Acne, rashes, eczema and age spots can be very annoying and undermine our self-esteem. There’s a lot we can put onto our skin, but if you want to heal your issues from within, it’s good to know that skin troubles are often caused by a deficiency in: vitamins A, B3, biotin, B8, C, E, omega-3 fats, copper, selenium, or zinc.

8. You’re dealing with digestive issues

If you don’t digest and absorb your food properly, the best diet in the world is pretty useless. If you’re suffering from poor digestion, constipation, diarrhea, bloating or other GI tract troubles, you might be lacking: vitamin B11 & iron, B8, B12, C, D, E, K, selenium, magnesium, or zinc.

9. You can’t sleep

Did you know that 90% of people who suffer from sleeplessness also suffer from other chronic conditions such as diabetes, stroke, heart disease or high blood pressure? They are also more likely to feel depressed or gain weight. If getting enough zzz’s seems impossible, you could be deficient in: Vitamins B11, E, calcium, magnesium, or zinc.

What to do if you’re worried that you’re nutrient-deficient Keep a diary and note down when exactly you experience which symptoms. Once you’ve got a good overview, call your doctor to schedule a comprehensive blood test and, if possible, discuss the 80 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

results with someone experienced in orthomolecular therapy. Also, make sure to eat a balanced diet, rich in a rainbow of colors. Aim to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

Some ideas to help you do this: • Have “liquid salads” (aka green smoothies). • Put a bowl with fruit on every table in your home. • Keep containers with a mix of veggies in your fridge to take with you when you leave the house. • Dehydrate veggies. • Make your own veggie chips. • Schedule actual fruit breaks in your agenda (with reminders). If our body and mind are out of balance, there is a lot we can do ourselves to make things better. Start slowly with simple and real food, find alternatives for coffee, alcohol, and white sugar (because these affect the absorption of nutrients), and learn about a holistic approach to health and happiness.

Affirmations can be really helpful to us when

we want a specific result or experience in our lives, because they focus on thinking in a particular way and this therefore creates a feeling associated with our outcome, which in turn triggers a vibration that matches with what you want. The universe then picks up this signal and sends you experiences, people and situations that match this frequency, drawing to you what you are thinking and feeling about and in resonance with. When you buy a new car you suddenly see it everywhere, and this is because the feeling of having that car is resonating with you and you draw to you examples of this.

People use affirmations to deliberately change what is coming into their life, but it’s important to create your affirmations the right way. First of all they have to be in the present tense, in other words, as if your outcome is happening right now. If you focus on something happening in the future, then this will have the energy of the future and always be out of reach for you. Secondly, they have to be positive in order to draw in the good experiences that you desire. Thirdly, they have to trigger a feeling within you that feels as if the outcome has happened. It’s the feeling part of this that is magnetic, the whole idea of the affirmation is really to get you to the feeling. Using emotive language will help you and also visualising your outcome as you use your affirmation. For example “I am living in the house of my dreams now, I am overflowing with joy and gratitude for this lovely space that is perfect for me.” “I am part of a loving and connected relationship, that affirms that I am precious, unique, loveable and valued.” Once you start to work with affirmations you will also become aware that everything that you think and say is actually an affirmation! It’s really important to be an observer of your conscious mind and have an awareness of what you think and say, especially, repeated thoughts are going to be affirming feelings to you that may not serve your greatest good. Do a quick audit of what you think about yourself, your life etc, and see what you could change so that your thoughts can start to help you to create what you want...

...and stop drowning in what you don’t! Affirmations •

Our emotions are so strong and amazing, that most of the time we are unaware of its capacity. It’s natural for us to journey through dense, deep and dark thoughts. When we realise it, we feel guilty and try to hide our feelings. Why? Now, by no means am I suggesting to run up and down the street like a lunatic and shout down everyone’s door. Realise how you are feeling. Take stock. We take note of the silliest things, sometimes giving cognisance to aspects that play no part significantly in the future. Yet we prefer to hide our emotions. Positive, good, bubbly emotions are just as easy to feel as negative emotions. Recently, there have been many people around me feeling empty, with a sense of misery, frustration and endless despair. Some have tried everything short of going to a Voodoo practitioner in South America. The question still remained. Why do I feel so distant from reality? I feel as though I am never going to meet with nor be with someone who fits perfectly into my life. Will I ever be happy? I have read self help books from here to Kathmandu and back, but I can’t connect? I’m on a journey but feel like I am not attracting anything positive? Sometimes we read the right books, listen to the right audio, and attend the right workshops. But the question therein is ‘is it right for me or just right according to the world?’ If you are not feeling emotionally switched on nor receptive, nothing would work. It would take you as far as you can throw a baby elephant. There has to be a time when you have to stop investing in self help books and start investing in yourself. Someone else’s man might seem perfect and you might feel cheated that your love Mystic Sisters •

life is as flat as a white sheet, but that does not mean you are in a race to get there. It means you need to ready yourself for the correct and unique future and destiny that belongs to you. I know in theory it sounds hard. But realistically, if all you really wanted was a caring man, why have you put certain people in a friend zone and others God knows what zone you placed them in.

It is about you. Take charge. Focus on awakening that sexy, sultry, wild passion within you. If you are not happy to go out for coffee alone, why the hell would anyone want to go out for coffee/dinner/ movies with you. Get your positive energy going inside. Think of yourself as this fabulous tree trunk (I know it sounds completely unsexy), but if it’s not nurtured and loved now, it will not have healthy branches nor offerings in the future!

Good luck and shake that fabulous ass! 86 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Hi darling, Many people keep their options open and so are you. He adores you but has become mentally lazy in this relationship. He won't walk away unless you do. I do see a new man in 2 years. Yes it is deceptive but mostly to yourself as the world sees you as an attached woman. You would never carry a dead horse about, why carry this? You are witty, loving, naughty and gorgeous. Get out there and seize the world!

It’s not unusual to hear children say strange things. Most of the time what they say makes no sense to the point that when they do say something with any amount of intellect in it, parents tell anyone who will listen that their child must be a genius. I think we can credit a lot of it to their boundless imagination, something we seem to leave behind as we add more candles every year to our birthday cakes. The essence of their pure and innocent nature makes it possible for even some of their more disturbing disclosures to still be considered funny or cute. It doesn’t matter what age a child is, you can bet that inevitably at some point they will string together various words forming a thought that as an adult has never crossed your mind. There are many other discoveries that I have uncovered since becoming a mother. Sometimes I sound just as strange as the children when I talk. I hear myself saying unusual phrases, things that I never dreamt would come out of my mouth. Most of these are in reply to the kids questions or actions, and yes I am putting all the blame on the children because I never had to say these things before my children were born. Sometimes after I utter one of these weird sentences I play it over in my mind and just stand there and shake my head. I never thought I would hear myself say, “Please stop licking the window.” Not only have I said it, I have had to say it numerous times and to multiple children. I don’t understand the fascination, there’s no flavor on the window there isn’t even a texture to feel funny on their tongue. I just shake my head and remember to use non-toxic environmentally friendly cleaning solutions. There is the ever-popular saying “Do NOT stick that up your nose!” There have been instances of Fruit Loops, marbles, beans, french fries, small toys, crayons, coins and even macaroni. But the one that gets my stomach turning is when they have their finger Did I say That? •

crammed in up to the knuckle, at that point I’m afraid of what is going to come out along with their finger.

“My son came up to me one day with a black and lacy piece of lingerie and asked if he could use it for his costume. My reply was ‘No, you can NOT use my bra for Spiderman eyes.’” All kids seem to like jewelry I think because it’s shiny and something they normally aren’t allowed to run around with. I would occasionally let my son play with my watch because it wasn’t expensive and the only thing I had to worry about was him putting it somewhere and never finding it again. If something did happened to it I could just go back to the dollar store and buy another one. He found it amusing to put it on and take it back off over and over again. One day during lunch he asked to play with it again, he was sitting at the table so I figured he couldn’t get into any trouble with it so I agreed. At one point he got way to quiet, which always lets me know he is doing something that he shouldn’t be doing. I looked over and had to tell him “Get my watch off your tuna sandwich, would you like some lettuce instead?” A couple years ago two of my sons went through a Spiderman mania phase. We had Spiderman pajamas, dishes, action figures, masks, movies and video games. They would constantly run through the house pretending to spin webs and catch the imaginary bad guys that seem to be lurking around every corner and doorway of our house. This obsession led to one of my favorite strange sentences. My son came up to me one day with a black and lacy piece of lingerie and asked if he could use it for his costume. My reply was “No, you can NOT use my bra for Spiderman eyes.” With all my sons I had to constantly tell them “Get your hand out of your pants!” What is it with little boys are they worried it’s going to fall off or something? 96 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

We have always had animals even when the kids were young. I wanted them to have the experience of a family pet and it was a good way to teach them how to treat animals and to be kind to them. I should have seen this one coming... “No we don’t sniff strangers butts to say hello, only dogs do that.” Every mother knows that even in the bathroom they can not be guarenteed alone time. Within moments of sitting down they usually hear “Mommy what are you doing?” as the door swings open and in they walk. I know they are trying to be helpful but once again I find myself saying something I never thought I would have to say... “No I can wipe myself thank you.” Not all the strange sentences that come out of my mouth are negative though. There are the times when your child actually does something they are supposed to do, like use the potty. You know you have reached full-parenthood status when you are genuinely excited to say, “Yahoo, you went poo-poo!”

I have found that every aspect of motherhood brings unexpected experiences, some that I want to remember and others I would pay to forget. From the moment a woman finds out she is pregnant she begins her journey down that long and twisted road where children are living proof that truth is stranger than fiction.
