Why Boutique Businesses

Are Booming

When I say “boutique”, I’m sure it conjures an image of a small clothing store, but a “boutique business” can be any type of company that is small but well-formed, lean and mean, and, above all, dynamic and forward-thinking. Alright, I take on board the criticism: that it is simply a nicer way of referring to a small company; but there is something more to it than this over-simplified, broad-brush statement can capture. It’s something of quality. Something exclusive that delivers above-bar, simply because that’s how your brand rolls! Guess what? Boutique businesses who offer services are actually starting to win the game on corporate preferred supplier lists, the world over! Know why? I bet you would like to know; it’s certainly encouraging news! My industry, management consulting, is a fine example. For a long time, Big 5 consultancies have dominated the 14 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

PSLs and despite price tags of millions of dollars and track records that show landing overly-complicated and poorly executed projects and deliverables, they were successful at winning big accounts purely on the basis of client perception that they could supply the people, framework and expertise for the job. If times got tough - they simply throw more people at it until it worked out for everyone (P&Ls managed like a tightrope walker, yes, but still profitable across the board). For a very long time, this was true. Consultancies had large, carefully-managed resource pools to ensure that salaried employees were chargeable as much of the year as possible. To try to balance things, most of the tenured, salaried consultants had a sales target to help maintain the work coming down the pipeline not just for themselves but for others in the resource pool, too. This meant that if you hired me in code testing but then asked me to take on a slightly different role as the project progressed or wanted to add on to my accountabilities, I would then “sellâ€? you another person from my Big 5 firm against the rate card we attached to the contract when we negotiated the deal. I hit my sales target, I got my bonus and promotions. However, the recession left no industry untouched and a dirty little secret of the industry is that the Big 5 (and the longer list thereafter) use contractors/freelancers just as often as companies do, themselves. The unpalatable truth being that companies grew tired of paying double and triple the market rate for these resources while sacrificing control over delivery decisions and finding themselves agreeing Letter From the Editor, Michelle Fitz •

to more and more people on site to deliver their original project or programme. If it’s true for my industry, it’s even better for everyone in retail, business to consumer services and even in training. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if it were true for everyone in any industry. I wanted to write about this so that you boutique owners could take heart. I wanted to remind you that small is often better. Yes. I said better. I wanted to also remind prospective clients out there that a choice to support boutique business is a choice that is going to pay you big returns. Let me be more direct - we’ll save you some big money. We can make you happier than you ever thought you could be through the service and quality we provide, without outside pressure diluting our ability to perform for you, carte blanche. We’ll take on only what we can truly deliver. We won’t paint a false picture that some senior manager has made up, or allow a preconceived notion to float simply to maintain the politics within our disjointed beast of a culture. If we need to renegotiate or add services, we will do so openly, accept challenges and explain why. Most of all, if you still tell us “no”, we won’t hide it from you, tell you lies and do what we wanted to do, anyway, hiding behind carefully concealed data which many of the bigger firms easily do. We can deliver pragmatic solutions, quality goods, original 16 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

and fresh ideas, beautiful designs, things that WORK, etc all at comparatively “cottage-industry” rates that the bigger guys simply can’t touch. Why else have we seen huge shifts in the handmade space via sites like Etsy, NotOnTheHighStreet and countless home-grown websites with Shopify accounts? Why are energy firms and governments working with smaller digital agencies? We serve our customers better, give excellent value and we’re clever. Where I come from, we’d call this “doing a damn fine job and looking damn fine while we’re at it” ... plus, we are just small enough to still deeply care about things when it doesn’t turn out quite as promised and we’ll do everything we can to keep those promises. Why? Because our businesses are just small enough to still reflect on our own reputations. We are close enough to the day-to-day runnings that we are still affected when we win the bid, when we make you overjoyed at what we produce for you and we are gutted when we hear you’re disappointed. Chin up, boutique business owners! The world is wide open for the taking and that small budget and big can-do attitude is exactly right for where the world is, right now. Go get ‘em!

As the Style Editor for Hat Trick Magazine, I love being able to chat with successful entrepreneurs, especially women, and share their story with all of you! For this issue of Hat Trick we have the lovely Hat Trick Contributor, Marina BerBeryan. Marina is an accomplished Fashion Stylist who’s styled everyone from celebrities to fashion designers. Learn more about Marina and her work as a Fashion Stylist below.

1. When did you first know that you wanted to be Fashion Stylist? I have always had passion for fashion, ever since I can remember. When I was a little girl, I was first inspired by my mother and my grandmother, followed by supermodels, magazines and fashion shows.

2. How did you get your start? It all started when I won my first fashion stylist competition at the age of 6.

3. Who are some of your go to brands when it comes to styling your clients? I work with both high profile designers and upcoming designers. I also work with showrooms and department stores. It really depends on the client and their budget. 22 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

4. How much say do your clients have in what they wear? My clients and I decide on a look together. My client’s opinion is very important to me. I want them to feel comfortable, confident and beautiful when they wear the chosen ensemble. They have a message to relay to the world and that message is also conveyed through what they wear. My job is simply to enhance their personal style.

“I love styling my clients whether it’s a mega-superstar or a housewife and mother of six. I don’t mind if it’s a red carpet event or a simple business meeting. Everyone wants to look their best and I make that happen!”

5. Why do celebrities and people in general choose to use stylists? I think they all have different reasons and it really varies. Some will want to use my services because of my extensive experience and keen eye for details. While others just want to have a makeover with a fashion professional who knows what’s in and what’s not, and what works for their bodies and what doesn’t. There are so many reasons to work with a stylist. A good example of having a stylist: Having a legal issue and having to go to court to defend yourself without an attorney. 6. Do you have a preference when it comes to styling an event, red carpet, TV, or music video? No, I don’t and I don’t have a favorite when it comes to my clientele. I love styling my clients whether it’s a mega-superstar or a housewife and mother of six. I don’t mind if it’s a red carpet event or a simple business meeting. Everyone wants to look their best and I make that happen!

7. How do you build trust with brands that you pull from? There are several critical factors to consider when pulling a gown from a designer, and yes, trust is the key component.

Always follow the designer’s policy. Take good care of the items pulled. Return items on time. Maintain a good relationship.

8. We love that you style for everyone, but of course, we have to ask: Who are the famous people you have styled in your career? I have worked with many! A-List actress Claire Danes, members of the Hilfiger & Parisi family, Americas Next Top Model and Miss California Natalie Pack, Gretchen Rossi from Beverly Hills Housewives, GQ & FHM model Carissa Rosario, Mega-Superstar Armenian Artist Armenchik, successful Sony Executives & famous fashion designers. I’ve also styled for magazines, malls, LA Fashion Week and more. Confessions of a Hollywood Style Mogul •

“I strongly believe in helping others. I have my own charity , Sima’s Wish, benefiting the National Breast Cancer Foundation. It’s dedicated to my mother-in-law who was a victim of breast cancer.”

9. How do you go about obtaining style gigs? As an established fashion stylist in Hollywood, I receive many offers to participate in different gigs and style clients where I am able to pick and choose. Mostly, gigs are based on recommendations from previous and current clients.

10. Who’s in your ‘wishlist’ of clients to style? I would love to style Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie.

11. Tell us more about your work with charities. I strongly believe in helping others. I have my own charity , Sima’s Wish, benefiting the National Breast Cancer Foundation. It’s dedicated to my mother-in-law who was a victim of breast cancer. I also teach my children the importance of helping others. They actually have their own charity, called Kids Helping Kids, benefiting Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and the Rose and Alex PiIibos

School. In the past I have supported and continue to support numerous charities including The American Heart Association, The Lancaster Opera House, S.A.F.E., Project T.O.U.C.H, We Care for Humanity, and Armenian Telethon, along with other various fundraising events and activities.

12. Do you have any go to fashion tips? Know Your Body: Know your measurements before you

shop. It cuts down the time you spend trying on clothes & helps you choose outfits that fit your body perfectly. The most important body parts to measure are your chest, bust, waist and hips.

Don’t Go Too Loose or Too Tight: I can’t stress enough

how important it is to dress for your size. You have to make sure the clothes aren’t too tight or too baggy.

Try On Three Different Shoe Sizes, Not Just One:

Shoe sizes vary among designers and brands. First, try on your normal shoe size, then try on one pair that’s a half-size smaller and a second pair that’s a half-size larger. And when in doubt, buy the shoes that are a half-size larger.

Know Your Colors: It’s crucial to know which colors flatter

your skin tone, either warm or cold. For instance, women with cool undertones look best in shades of blue, white, gray, silver and black. Women with warm undertones look fabulous in shades of yellow, green, red and gold.

Double-Sided Tape is a Miracle: That is my personal

must have whether I’m styling a client, dressing myself or even my children. The tape keeps the plunging necklines in place and prevent any fashion mishaps. Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com •

13. Do you only style women or have you styled men too? I style both women and men. In fact my last male client was an Armenian superstar, Armenchik. 13. Favorite Designers? I have many favorite designers. Avant Garde fashion designers include, Zuhair Murad, Stephane Rolland, Christian Dior, Ellie Saab amongst many others. I also support the upcoming designers who are very talented and need the recognition. After all, it is extremely challenging making in the fashion industry.

4 Ways to Crush List Building, Fill Programs,

& Increase Profits...

...With Tele-seminars FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Andrea Sullenger 32 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Crush out list building, fill your programs, and increase your profits…sound good to anyone? Can you really do all of that with something as simple as your telephone? The answer is yes. Tele-seminars are like ice bergs. From the surface you

see a small portion of their actual mass. The reality is that if you were to dive down into the frigid water you would find a huge ice mass that is far weightier and goes deeper than what you can merely see from the surface. The same goes for tele-seminars, which is why some people brush them off, they are only looking at them from the surface and not digging in and seeing all that they can be used for and all that they can produce for the entrepreneur. Tele-seminars seem fairly straight forward and maybe not as fancy or tech savvy as other modes of communication and marketing. However, tele-seminars are a simple yet powerful way for you to leverage your time and talent to help you build your list regularly, set you apart from all the rest in your industry niche, give you a leg up when filling your programs and they are a sure fire way to increase your profits. I don’t know if you use tele-seminars to leverage your talent and time, if you do, kudos to you and if you don’t, why not? What I usually hear from entrepreneurs that haven’t yet jumped into the pond of hosting tele-seminars is that they are waiting until their list is big enough to market to or until it is big enough for them to get more than eight or ten people on. Can I give you a piece of advice? Don’t wait. This is exactly how you are going to get your list built up and bigger. This is how you are going to build your confidence muscle so that when you do have a list of 10,000 plus you will be hosting tele-seminars with ease and grace, verses panic and hives! Don’t compare yourself to other tele-seminars Tele-seminars •

33

that you have attended where you get on and you hear a zillion beeps proclaiming that there at least 100,000 people on this very call and that the person hosting it has far surpassed anything you could ever know or achieve. Everyone has to start some place and I promise that most of us did start with tele-seminars and when we did, yes there actually were only five, seven or ten people on. We had to build up just like everyone else. Since you took that advice so well let me throw out another for you, start before you think you are ready. Pull the trigger, jump in and just go for it. Seriously, it really is a phone call and even if you bomb it you will survive. Just think, if only five people show up on that first one, and four are your relatives, then you only bombed in front of one actual potential client. How do you begin? Really very easily. First just pick a date that you will host this event. Pick a time. Pick a topic. The topic needs to be good…the title needs to be spectacular. If the title doesn’t tell your select audience what to expect then it really will be you and the phone operator. Title is important. It needs to be focused on solving a problem that your target market currently has. Brainstorm a few, bounce them off of three people and then just pick one. This is a learning experience and you won’t learn unless you dive in. Next you need to get yourself set up. You can use all sorts of fancy technology or you can just keep it simple. My suggestion is, at least in the beginning, keep it simple. Many people like to use free services and I would highly suggest that. The only thing that is really imperative is that you have the ability to record the call. You can also use as a backup Audio Acrobat. It is fairly inexpensive and very user friendly.

“…you MUST deliver value and powerful content but you do not deliver everything you have ever learned on the topic in the last twenty years.”

You have moved mountains just doing those action steps. Now comes the fun part, the part where you create your content. Remember that a tele-seminar is not designed to be an intensive course or VIP session. It is designed to highlight a problem or challenge your target market faces, why they face it, the consequences of them not solving the problem, and then you share the freedom and release they attain, once the problem is solved. What most entrepreneurs do is they write out the outline for their call and then they cram it so full of content it would be a four hour call if they actually covered it all. The whole purpose of a tele-seminar is to introduce people to you, your style of work and communication and to lead them into, at the end of the call, your next offering. So yes you can write out a packed full outline but then go back, whittle it down and come up with the skeleton model of what you will cover. That is what you deliver. Please don’t hear that or read that wrong…you MUST deliver value and powerful content but you do not deliver everything you have ever learned on the topic in the last twenty years. Don’t forget that your introduction of the call of you and of your topic needs to be profound and powerful. Some like to have this done for them by a colleague. That is fine or you can do it yourself, but in all cases make sure it is written out and concise. Your intro is the time when your audience wants to hear the emotion behind you, what makes you so great, and the stand out in this area. Why should they really pay attention to you.

Just as your introduction needs to be powerful so does your close or offer. Your offer needs to include: Tele-seminars •

35

How their life will change from taking you up on your offer – select three things and highlight those What benefits will they receive Recap – Thank them, review what you shared, review the offer, explain the investment, offer any bonuses (there must be a limiter on the bonuses and the offer).

4 WAYS TO LEVERAGE THE TELE-SEMINAR 1. Use tele-seminars to build buzz around a new program you will be launching. Do this as a preview call for the actual program or product. Offer value and great content that can be leverage and used even when someone isn’t taking you up on your end offer. You can then turn this tele-seminar into an information product. A great tool to turn the call into an actual handout product is called Vervante.com. They do great work and allow you to leverage this one call into a hard copy workbook or CD. You can then turn around and use it over and over again at things like speaking gigs. A hard copy product has a much higher perceived value than an MP3 download. If you were to turn this one piece of work into a workbook and audio program that you could then sell over and over again at your speaking gigs from the back of the room for $97 how fast would that be a pay off for you? Pretty darn fast I am betting. 2. Use a tele-seminar as bonus training on a program or product you already offer. 3. If you are a speaker, use tele-seminars to help build attendance for the event. Do a quick check in with the speaker 36 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

coordinator and offer to do a pre-event tele-seminar on a topic that coincides with the event and or your speaking topic. Tell him/her that you are happy to offer that at no additional cost and it will help to build the over all attendance. Bonus‌.the speaker coordinator will be a great referral source for you down the road and will direct people to your specific breakout session or training. 4. Use tele-seminars to create a mini tele-summit. Don’t make this a huge undertaking. Just find three people that would be great JV partners with you and have larger lists than you. Ask if you can interview them and if they will then share the interview with their list in a solo email at least once and share it with their social media outlets. Keep your tele-seminar fun, upbeat and as light hearted as you can. Your audience does want to hear from a professional that knows their stuff but they also want to know you are a person with failings and challenges also. Share the stories that are relevant to your topic that show this. Play fun music at the beginning of your call. Read a fun quote or testimonial. The last piece of advice is to be consistent. Don’t just host one and be done with it. Nope, you gotta learn as you go. Host at least two a month. Start this month, you have nothing to lose.

Be yourself, roll with it, have fun and offer great content. If you take the challenge and just jump in you will build your list, fill your programs even faster than before and your profits will dramatically increase.

How to plug into great sound online FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Katie Geddes 38 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Sound Affects (Not Effects)

Sound affects us on a deep, feeling level. Clean, pure sound makes us feel welcome. It’s a beautiful thing. Use it to your advantage. The quality of your sound can affect your bottom line in real ways. It’s just as important as the image you present of your business. The good news is that it’s never been easier to sound good. Here’s a little guidance I hope may “resonate” with you (warning: puns are easy with this topic).

Sound Matters

How you sound matters. As entrepreneurs grow increasingly sophisticated in their abilities and demands, the desire for great online sound presents itself. Whether you’re creating podcasts, having fun sharing recorded voice messages and music with Embody Your Sexy Geek •

friends, delivering webinars or recording videos and in-depth presentations, how you sound is an important aspect of your message and it creates a strong impression.

Built-in Mic vs. External Mics USB & XLR -- Huh?

Your computer, Mac or PC, usually comes equipped with a built-in mic. If you have a desktop system, it’s possible that you don’t have a built-in mic, in which case you need to get one if you want to use things like Skype (allowing you to connect worldwide) as well as recording and exporting sound. To demystify some of the language, USB, with which you’re likely familiar, is the name for one standard connector used with many external devices for your computer. XLR is the traditional input connection on a microphone that looks like three little dots. Musicians will be familiar with XLR mics, while most business people won’t. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t care. You can get excellent quality mics that offer both connections. What’s great about this combo is that you can then use your mic for either computer recording or a gig, whether a speaking engagement or becoming the rock star you always knew you had inside of you. Can you say karaoke, anyone?

Options

First, you need to decide what fits your needs. Will you ever want or need to take your mic away from your computer, for instance, for speaking engagements? In that case, you’ll want a USB / XLR combo mic. 40 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

If you’ll only ever be recording voice, that doesn’t mean you want to scrimp on sound quality. Voice matters as much as music sound quality and I want to help you GAIN — (pun intended: gain in a live PA (public address) system means signal strength) — every advantage possible for your business. Think how much time and attention people put into their music setups. Your business’ vocal quality deserves at least some of that consideration. Following is a list of top runners in the external computer mic department that I found when comparing current options, speaking to fellow entrepreneurs and consulting audio sound professionals.

What People are Liking

Blue Microphones is the clear frontrunner manufacturer for high quality USB pro sound level mics at affordable prices, while there are other good options. Great picks include the following.

Blue Microphones Spark Price Estimate: $199 Note that this model comes in two variations; the orange one doesn’t come with a desk mount and isn’t iPad/iPhone compatible (also has sound differences) whereas the newer blue one does and is. Hailed as Blue’s first serious, studioquality microphone that also attaches to the iPad and iPhone, this latest Spark mic garners much praise from audiophiles.

“This is the best bang for your buck USB microphone on the market today. I recommend this to everyone for talking or singing. It’s great for both.” John Ferretti, Guitar Center Audio Dept Embody Your Sexy Geek •

41

Blue Microphones Yeti & Yeti Pro Price Estimates: $129 & 249 The Yeti comes in two varieties and price points. The pro offers stereo XLR outputs.

“If you live in a noisy household, a condenser mic (like the Yeti and Spark) may NOT be the way to go. These babies will pick up everything, including the hum of the refrigerator. But if “up close” sound is what you need, you will likely fall head over heels for the Yeti USB or the Spark.” Chel Hamilton, Entrepreneur

Rode Podcaster Price Estimate: $229 Rode has created the Podcasterin answer to the onslaught of computer recording. Well-received for voice recordings, this mic is not intended for recording singing or music like many of Blue’s offerings and is therefore less versatile but not less expensive.

“Very easy to set up and excellent sound quality. I got the shock mount to cut down on noise and that was a good move. I didn’t pick up on the background noise until I heard the difference between my laptop mic and the Rode.” Suzanne Gray, Art Consultant 42 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Blue Snowball Price Estimate: $69 Works with the iPad. Widely reviewed as fantastic at this price point.

Blue Microphones Blue Bird Price Estimate: $299 Similar to the Spark but agorgeous USB / XLR combo option. There are many more expensive options if you want to go even more studio quality with your computer setup.

Mounting Details

You’ll need a mount of some kind for your mic, whether standing or a swing arm. Based on your working space layout, how you speak comfortably and your budget, be sure to consider this when choosing your mic. You’re definitely not going to want to hand hold your mic for optimal sound and comfort.

My Choice: The Blue Spark

My choice that will make you sound like the pro you are is the Blue Spark. I chose not to get the Blue Bird USB/XLR combo because I already own great XLR mics so didn’t need the flexibility. The sound quality is excellent. Setup is simple. It looks great. Embody Your Sexy Geek •

43

For those familiar with voice recording, a “pop screen” attachment is available for all Blue mics but I haven’t found it necessary, which is nice. I’m very pleased with the sound quality of this mic. Up your game and sound fantastic.

Setup Tips

It’s worth noting that 90% of the time, setup issues are “operator error.” I learned after an hour on the phone with Guitar Center that I needed to reboot for my system to have it recognize my new mic. When in doubt: unplug and reboot. You’ll be good to go. Be sure to check the “input” and “output” settings on your system preferences and choose your new mic. Same within each and any recording software you’re using. Webinar software stumped me until I clicked refresh and it recognized my mic. Click options and you’ll get it right. Test your system before any important recording dates.

What to Do When

Crisis Strikes One of the inevitabilities of life is that every so often, a crisis will occur. Crisis affects all of us differently. And depending on the degree of severity, dealing with it effectively, whilst meeting other important obligations, can be extremely difficult and challenging. If you have a business to run, a mortgage to pay, or a family to bring up, there’s no question about it – you’ll feel the pressure, possibly the desire, to keep functioning, no matter how you feel inside. FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Sandra Cunningham 50 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

So how can we make it possible for ourselves to carry on, to keep functioning and stay productive, when all the time it feels like our whole world is shattering around us?

Crisis can strike in many forms: the death of someone close, the loss of a job, a partner’s infidelity, the discovery of an illness, the sudden dawning that we’ve somehow lost our way… It might hit you out of the blue, or it might have been lurking on the horizon for some time. But, often when it happens, the event itself delivers a sharp and sudden blow, leaving you bewildered, shaken and uncertain about how to cope. As it all sinks in, you’re likely to experience a whole range of feelings and emotions, well before any silver lining appears. Shock, disbelief, bewilderment, pain and sadness, accompanied by stress, anxiety and sheer exhaustion are just for starters. There may be moments when all you want to do is, hide under the duvet and stay there. Or, maybe you’re more the keep-up-abrave-face-and-carry-on type, good at pretending that things are absolutely normal – and you’re fine! Let’s face it, we Brits are not exactly famed for our emotional dexterity. And sadly, western business culture has limited patience for the weak, the vulnerable and the fragile. Accepted. The show must go on. And personal crises aside, there’s work to be done, life to go on living, and responsibilities to fulfil. However, keeping a lid on your emotions is not the answer. Just like closing the valve of a pressure cooker, sooner or later, it’s liable to explode – massively – causing one, big heap of a mess. What to do When Crisis Strikes •

51

So carry on, you might. But deal with your crisis, you must.

Here are seven tips to help you keep your wheels turning after crisis hits, while allowing your healing to progress, so that you will emerge stronger and even better equipped to deal with life’s setbacks whenever they appear. Allow time for feeling. Let’s be under no illusions. We’re talking about going through a stressful and traumatic event. It’s natural and necessary to let yourself feel any pain, anger, disappointment and sadness, and to accept your feelings as normal. Unless you do this, you will find it difficult to leave the past behind and open up fully to life as it is now or in the future.

1

So, it’s pointless and counter-productive to deny yourself from having this time. Even if you have children clamouring for your attention 24/7 it is important to find a way to withdraw quietly (or noisily!) for periods, give yourself private space and simply let yourself ‘feel’. Don’t rush. Your natural tendency may be to knuckle down and get on with things. But in the beginning, you may find that even the most minor tasks are harder to do than usual, and your interest in work or hobbies has diminished. It may be hard to concentrate and sometimes it can feel like your brain is just not connecting with the rest of you.

2

This is completely normal. And it is not the time to rush into anything new or make any major decisions or commitments. If you can, try to delay things like presenting yourself for job interviews, attending important meetings, impulsively selling up your house or starting a new romance. Your emotions are all over the place, so wait a bit until you feel 52 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

stronger and more clear-headed. How long this will take is very individual, but if it carries on for a very long time, then it might be best to seek professional help. Move gently. When it’s time for you to re-engage practically with your external world, you’re still likely to feel wobbly. It helps to adopt a slightly gentler pace than normal and to focus only on what needs to be done, rather than ‘being busy’ and filling your time with numerous, joy-less tasks. You can still ‘get stuff done’ – just be selective. (By prioritising in this way, some people even find they are more productive than usual, and so they take efforts to avoid slipping back into old ways once the crisis has passed.)

3

Work on achieving one or two goals per day – perhaps going for some easy-wins – and gradually build up from there. Do be prepared for the odd re-lapse here and there (that’s okay) and don’t expect to get back to motoring at 100 mph immediately. Honour and celebrate the past. Many people rush into a new job or relationship without giving a second glance at the experiences and events of their past. That’s a shame, as well as a missed opportunity. No matter how much pain and discomfort you’re feeling right now, it’s almost certain that you’ll have some great memories too, that are really important to cherish and hold on to.

4

As you look back, try to be a ‘compassionate witness’ to your own life, minimising any inclination to judge, criticise or blame. Not only will it help you to get a clean sense of closure, you might even get some mind-shifting insights that you weren’t able to access until now. You will also have some great lessons to draw from, that What to do When Crisis Strikes •

53

will make you better equipped to face the next crisis whenever it arrives. Take care of your own needs. Coming to terms with a major setback can be exhausting and deflating. Make sure you channel a decent amount of your energy into activities that will nurture you, and help you to build yourself back up – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually – so that you become ready to take on the world once more.

5

Plan small treats, take a short trip, perhaps even do some weeding in the garden. It’s very helpful and healing to have some light and pleasant distractions at times. By the way, this is NOT selfish. If you are unwell or way out of kilter, you are no good to anybody or anything. So get plenty of sleep, exercise moderately and eat well. Try not to over-indulge in alcohol or anything else that’s bad for you in excess. And be kind to yourself. Free your mind. It’s important NOT to beat yourself up about why things didn’t work out as you wanted. It’s easy to get caught up in endless thoughts about “what-if“, and “if only” at a time like this. While it’s understandable to feel some regrets, this is fruitless, energy sapping, crazy-making thinking, and it only sabotages your own recovery process.

6

So, don’t indulge in it. Recognise that there are certain things which lie outside of your control (and the control of others) and that perhaps what’s happened is all just part of a larger pattern. Reclaim Your Assets. Getting to grips with your situation on a number of practical fronts, is an important step towards putting you back in control of your life after having been thrown off track. For example, you can review your financial situation, get a health assessment, get up to date with your friends and close contacts, review your knowledge-

skill base. You might be amazed at the amount you have going for you, despite how awful you feel. Doing this work can be a great morale and confidence booster. And it will help you to plan forward too when you’re ready to take some definitive action.

By definition, a crisis is a sudden and major turning

point. No matter how much you’d like to, you can’t go back after a crisis: you feel different to how you were before; others perceive you as different. And now the future looks different.

So go easy, be kind to yourself, and trust that you will get through it. There are opportunities awaiting you in this next phase. And you may even come out smiling.

When Two Rights Make a Right True organisational development takes place when you bring together two groups of people, solve a problem together and then follow through on those actions when you’re carrying out your day to day. Given? Maybe. You have to take the stance that there is something inherent in the way these two groups which is actively working against the grain. I used to work for a TV shopping channel. There used to be very regular debates about the products selected for prime spots, the level of detail provided for them, how much airtime they received, and pricing points. On one end of the argument you had the broadcasting team wanting to improve the on air experience.

FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Sukh Pabial 56 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

On the other you had the merchandising team who wanted to optimise the sell. They were both right in their assertions. What was missing was they weren’t having those discussions together. It took some honest dicsussions with the directors of both departments to help them see and hear each others points of view. It took a joint away day with their top teams to ensure they were hearing these myths and assumptions together. Ultimately they realised they all needed to be present at the product selection meeting that took place every week because that was the forum for these discussions. The saying it can be hard to see the wood for the trees comes to mind here. For both groups, they had valid points of view and were both right. That’s an important appreciation from an OD perspective. If I’m to resolve conflict I have to have true empathy with both parties. Their reality drives their behaviour. If I dismiss it or belittle it, I can’t help them because I’ve already decided they’re wrong and they don’t know what they’re talking about. This is also the kind of situation where anecdotes are highly useful. There are a good many people who would argue that you need data to make change happen. The fact is, you only need data to support your position because there is a lack of trust in your word. That may not be intentional, but it’s true.

When I trust that what you’re telling me has value and is honest, I’m willing to have that conversation about change. When I don’t and ask you to prove it, is the right atmosphere for conflict to take place.

Brad Pitt. Beyonce. Angelina Jolie. Marilyn Monroe. Heck, Barack Obama. All of them have something in common. They are magnetic! Like them or not, we can’t take our eyes off of them. FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Gina Hussar 64 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

The term charisma has two definitions: compelling attractiveness or charm that can inspire devotion in others, and a divinely conferred power or talent. I am going to give it a third definition. Charisma: crazy, sexy hotness. So how do you get there? Well it isn’t by doing 150 crunches a day or by spending hundreds of dollars on professional blonde highlights. (Though those things feel pretty great too!) What I am talking about is completely attainable for everyone reading this. Because you see, charisma—or crazy, sexy hotness—isn’t about how you look. It’s about you feel; how you feel about yourself and how that feeling inspires others to feel about you. It’s a ripple effect. How you feel shoots out a special energy that touches other people and influences their feelings about you. If you beam out a negative energy, they will feel negative around you. If you beam out positivity, self-assurance, love and light, that is exactly what you will bring forth from them. How cool and powerful is that?

How people are attracted to you is a direct result of the energetic messages you are beaming out in their direction. Here are 4 things you need to emanate that awesome, attractive energy that makes you irresistible. A PASSION: Years and years ago when I was working in theatre and choreographing a show, I was telling my boyfriend at the time how excited I was about the project. He said “I love when you talk about this. Your whole face lights up and your eyes literally sparkle and shine.” (Looking back, WOW he was cute!) The point is when we have something we feel passionate about, our face truly does look brighter. There is a spark in our eyes and a zest and intensity that pour out of us and that’s hot! What do you LOVE? What makes you feel that rush of energy 4 Steps to a Sexier You •

running through your veins? Message it sends: I am capable of intense rapture and devotion….everywhere. ;) A GOAL: We all need a purpose. Something we are fired up about and moving towards. Something that revs up our engine and fuels our souls. We need to have work that doesn’t feel like work. Friday night with no plans? Great! It gives you a chance to spend time with your vision, working towards your desired outcome. Nothing is more boring than when we ask someone what’s new, and in return we get a shrug, an empty stare and a “not much. Get a goal; the kind that you lose yourself in. The kind of goal that is so exciting to you that you cannot stop planning for it. Message it sends: I am never bored (or boring) because I have something AWESOME going on. And you will want to be a part of it. BOUNDLESS RANDOM LOVE: Hold up. I’m not talking one night stands with random bartenders. What I am talking about is choosing to love every single person you encounter, knowing deep down that you are divinely connected to them in some way. Sometimes when I am just walking down the street and I pass someone I will find myself wondering what moves them. Are they happy? Struggling? Feeling “less than?” I will quietly bless them, silently say “I love you.” It feels incredible to be filled with that much love for everyone and everything around you. It makes people feel good in your presence. That same old boyfriend nick named me “Bell.” He said it was because when I walked into a room it was as though a bell rang, and everyone woke up and gravitated towards me. (Maybe I should have held onto him ;) Message it sends: I have boundless rivers of love within me and therefore, an endless amount to give. In my presence you will feel forever loved and special. (And who doesn’t want that?!) YOUR LITTLE BOOK OF RULES- Know thyself. To thine own self be true… The guys who wrote all that were on to something. Who in the heck are you? What do you stand for? 66 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

What are your values? What are your non-negotiable needs and expectations? What will you NEVER tolerate? Answer those questions for yourself and hold fast to the answers. When you get comfortable with your rules, and live by them as guidebook, your confidence will soar. I had no confidence at all growing up. I had no idea what I wanted or what I stood for. I spent many, many years watching my friends go on dates while I sat home with my parents. But in my late 20’s something shifted. I began to love myself. I learned my answers to the questions above and I never wavered. I also never sat home again on a weekend! You see when you know exactly what you want, don’t want, what you always expect and never tolerate a few different things will happen. The opposite sex will be grateful that you’ve removed the tiresome guessing game and they will be inspired by your sense of identity in such a way that they will openly communicate theirs. Message it sends: I know who I am. And who I am ROCKS. And you cannot help but want to dig deep and find out more.

So there you have it. Four steps to a sexier you. What’s great about these is that it doesn’t matter how bad of a hair day you’re having, or much money you’ve lost or how many pounds you’ve put on. These four steps are totally within your power. Use them. Feel them. Live by them. And watch the love roll in

4 Little Lifestyle Tweaks

For a Better Summer

Everyone talks about eating seasonally. It’s the way humans ate for millennia (we didn’t have a choice!), and suddenly, it’s trendy. But what about the rest of your life? Do you make seasonal adjustments? (And I’m talking about more than just swapping out your wardrobe!) FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Amanda Cook 72 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Ok at first glance, adjusting your routine and lifestyle for the season might seem crazy! I’ve finally figured out a routine that works for me, and now you want me to change it?! But stick with me here. Adjusting your life for the seasons makes a lot of sense. That’s how humans lived forever (until very recently when our modern food supplies, electricity and careers enabled us to do, eat and be exactly the same, every single day.) I’m all about modern conveniences, but there’s something quaint and comforting about living in sync with the seasons; it just feels right, and I believe that if you just make a few small adjustments for the coming summer season – you’ll feel better too. Here’s how.

Summer Tweak no.1 Eat more cooling foods. This is partially eating seasonally (what is available), and partially common sense. You know this, intuitively. In the summer, do you want to eat heavy stews and chilli with cornbread? No. Your body craves light, water-filled, crunchy, crispy, cooling foods (and the occasional cool, creamy ice cream!). Thinking about foods as cooling and warming has been around for thousands of years. The traditional medical system in India (Ayurveda) spends a lot of time looking at the properties of foods, and which foods work for different people and different seasons. There’s a similar system of cooling and warming foods in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and also in the traditional European system of ”humors’ in Galenic medicine, but you don’t need to know any of that to eat cooling foods.

4 Little Lifestyle Tweaks For a Better Summer •

73

This summer, when it’s hot outside, simply choose foods that are fresh, light and crunchy – and filled with water. Good choices for cooling foods are lettuce, cucumber, watermelon, (most vegetables, apart from root veg like potatoes and carrots), and sweet fruits. (If you live in London and we get another sudden summer cold snap – feel free to disregard this and resume eating your warming soups and stews!) Just tune into your body. It will tell you what foods you want to eat!

Summer Tweak no.2

Enjoy the longer days (and sleep less?) Here in London, it stays light until 10pm in the summer. (As opposed to getting dark at 4pm during the winter!) It feels amazing, and unless you live on the equator, you’ll get longer days during the summer too, so really make an effort to appreciate them. The summer gives us extra ‘found’ hours of daylight, so don’t waste them in front of the TV! Get outside and do something. Spend as much time outside during the summer as possible (even 10 extra minutes during your lunch break!). Drink your morning coffee/tea outside. Eat dinner outside. You may feel like sleeping less in the summer, but that’s ok. Go with what your body wants.

74 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Summer Tweak no.3

Drink some summery herbal teas Put down the chai! Summer is not the time of year for warming, spicy teas with ginger, black pepper and chilli. Instead, add some cooling herbs to your daily tea. (Or if you’re not in the habit of having herbal tea everyday, why not try adding a cup – hot or iced – this summer?)

Tasty and cooling herbs include: chamomile, peppermint and rose. Here are some ideas: Chamomile & rose for relaxation and emotional balance Chamomile to help you sleep Chamomile & peppermint to boost digestion Peppermint for an invigorating tea (especially good iced!) Black tea & peppermint (really stimulating with the caffeine. DELICIOUS iced!) Green tea and mint – Moroccan inspired – and they’re experts in what to drink when it’s hot outside! Green tea and rose – for a gentle, floral lift. Would also be delicious iced. 4 Little Lifestyle Tweaks For a Better Summer •

75

Summer Tweak no.4 Try new things. Summer is the time of the year for growth and expansion. If you think about the cycle of the year from an energetic perspective: Summer is the time for growth, change and high energy. Autumn is about ‘reaping what you’ve sown’, reassessing and weeding out what doesn’t work in your life. Winter is about nourishment, restoration and reflection. Spring is about cleansing, planting new seeds and starting fresh.

So this summer, go with the energy of the season. Get outside, try new things, push yourself a bit out of your comfort zone. That might mean trying a new sport, travelling to a new location, growing a new plant in your garden, trying a new food, finally going to that museum you’ve always wanted to visit…whatever feels right to you! 76 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

By Marina BerBeryan 78 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Leading fashion designer Sue Wong, who designed and launched a high-end dress line inspired by Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, debuted her Fall 2014 Collection at her Los Angeles Atelier on Friday April 11 2014. This year’s collection was called “Edwardian Romance,” dedicated to Beauty, Magic and Transformation. “What good is fashion unless it stirs up genuine emotion? Love and beauty have magical, transformative power,” explains Sue Wong. The evening was filled with Hollywood socialites, fashion stylists, bloggers, magazine editors and many other guests. Some of the celebrities that walked the red carpet were Grammy Award winning recording artist Omar Akram, football players Dale Moss and James Anderson, Swedish actress Britt Ekland, actor Ric Young, Actress Hélène Cardona, Actress Maitland Ward Baxter, recording artist Vaja Alani, TV personality Daphne Wayans, international model Carissa Rosario, producer Jennia Fredrique and others. The runway had a unique set up featuring two different catwalks on an elevated platform. The fashion show started with Sue Wong welcoming her guests and introducing modern master of the Indo-Nepali-Tabetan Buddhists, Maestro Romio Shrestha, followed by a performance from Collier Landry. Sue Wong’s Edwardian Romance 2014 Collection was inspired from the period costumes of Downton Abbey, the poetry, the paragon of beauty, and the haunting nostalgia affecting the present and the future. Sue Wong draws her inspiration from The Belle Époque era and interprets that in her sophisticated designs. The collection palette included neutrals such as sandalwood, taupe, ivory, and platinum and jewel tones such as sapphire, turquoise and amethyst, combining with Fall colors chocolate, red and black. Sue used a variety of lace, tulle, chiffon, taffeta enriched with embroidery, appliqué, hand bead work, sequins and seutache. The gowns were accented with novelty elements including handknotted beaded fringes, cascading tiered skirts and Grecian draping reminiscent of Old Hollywood Glam, Parisian Elegance and 1920’s Shanghai. Further adornment beckoned jewelry by Vilaiwan designed by Joe Polthakorn. For Sue Wong’s fashion show, I showed off my style credentials in an Azure Blue empire waist gown featuring an amazing 80 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

embellished neckline from Sue Wong’s Spring 2014 Jazz Babies Collection; bringing Spring to Sue Wong’s Red Carpet this year wearing her exclusively made one-of-a-kind gown from its collection. I paired my Carmen Steffens heels with my flowy gown for a slimmer and leaner look. As for my beauty-glam, I opted for a crisp make-up with a beige and peach shade along with a light smokey-eye look, adding a bit of sophisticated drama. The lipstick was a combination of gold and light-rose lip gloss, bringing out the vividness of my face without overdoing it. My blonde locks have always been my trademark ever since I can remember, so big blonde hair with a focus on soft, shiny waved curls ruled the night.

Upon the grand finale of Sue Wong’s Edwardian Romance Fall 2014 Collection, and for a moment there, I actually felt the “Beauty, Magic and Transformation” from The Belle Époque era. It was just so astonishing!

Part of developing good taste is becoming aware of the characteristics of the stuff we see and buy and use. Become conscious of color and form and function. Learn to spot the designer’s hard work in simplifying things. It’s the big reason Posh Brats products are so loved and coveted: good, simple, elegant design. I also think it’s one of the main reasons why so many people are flocking to Etsy and buying handmade items....they are just classier and more beautiful than mass-produced crap.

“If you mention taste nowadays, a lot of people will tell you that - Made in feels England “taste is subjective.” They believe this because it really that way to them. When they like something, they have no idea why. It could be because it’s beautiful, or because their mother had one, or because they saw a movie star with one in a magazine, or www.poshbrats.com because they know it’s expensive. Knowledge vs Practice As you begin your Spring training regime, you’ll see many, many promises of diets, programs and memberships that will ‘get you fit’. If there are so many answers out there, why are there so many people who haven’t found success with their goals? Why are there rising rates of obesity, depression, debt? The answers are out there – the knowledge, info and expertise but what we haven’t mastered is the application of this knowledge into our daily lives. We’re not ‘doing it’. We aren’t practicing what we need to on a daily basis to get what we want. How can we keep this practice so simple, easy, fast, effective and seamless that it becomes a habit, not an effort? At PowHERhouse, we continually and consistently focus on the Practice of PowHERful Living… over and over and over again!

Master these three keys to success and you’ll be well on your way. Without them, it will be yet another failed attempt: Understand the WHY: Getting clear on the nucleus of your motivation exponentially multiplies your chance of success. Goal-setting is great but most people fail because they aren’t clear and passionate about the WHY. Keep It Simple: Simplify your system! Use no more than three techniques or actions at a time, master them and move on. Any more than three causes overwhelm and inefficiency. Reconnect and Recommit Daily: In order to filter and focus on what you most want and keep it a priority in your 86 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

life, you need to reconnect and recommit to it daily. Within the PowHERhouse community, we offer a special private social media group that allows us to share, connect and stay accountable, daily.

EFFECTIVE EATING The Simple Structure Here are the Top 3 Habits to master in terms of eating effectively to produce goals. Once you master these three principles, then move onto The B List.

The A List 1. Drink more water: Minimum 1 litre per day. If you’ve been drinking 1 litre, double it. 2. Eat smaller meals more often: Ask yourself, what’s the protein in this meal? What’s the fibre? Follow the ‘never hungry’ rule. 3. Cut the crap: Allow yourself one cheat meal per week and 1 treat (ice cream, candy, chips, whatever your ‘junk’ is). Other than that, cut all the empty calories. And yes, sugar is the devil.

The B List 1. Replace one meal per day with one protein shake. 2. Start vitamins. 3. Eliminate ‘fluffy’ carbs and focus on ‘fibrous’ carbs.

How I Manifested the Partner, Job & Life I’ve Always

Wanted

Sooner or later we all come to a point when we realize

that some things in our life aren’t going that well. Fifteen years ago, I suffered from depression, I had an eating disorder, I was codependent, and a bacteriophobe. Plus, I almost married a guy who wanted me to be a Stepford Wife. Believe me, I know how exhausting it is to struggle without getting anywhere. I know how our limiting thoughts can stand between us and our happiness. Because at that time in my life, I felt totally stuck and powerless to change my situation. FIND ME ONLINE HERE

But do you want to know what I learned? If we really want to change our life, we can. It’s not a walk in the park, but it’s possible. Today I’m a specialized nutritionist, mindfulness coach, and life vision stylist and I’ve managed to turn my life around. One of the key strategies I used (and still use!) is visualization. This is how I turned from dreamer to go-getter:

I cut off the nasty little voice in my head I used to hear it every single day. The voice telling me that I was fat and not attractive enough, that I would never succeed, never work my way up, and never improve. This voice always made me focus on two things: Failure and disappointment. And because I was so used to listening to it, that’s exactly what I attracted: failure and disappointment. I know it sounds funny, but this nasty little voice is often a lot more present in our lives than we think. It’s looking right back at us from the blackhead we’ve just spotted in the mirror. It’s laughing at us from our computer screens when we just seem unable to figure out how something works. It’s pointing fingers at us from magazine covers, shouting at us during meetings with bossy colleagues, and it’s just mean when we’re trying on new clothes seeing ourselves in the mirror! I realized that if I wanted to get out of my own misery, tuning out this voice was the first thing I had to do. And I did so by religiously practicing self-love and meditation exercises every single day. How I Manifested... •

I visualized exactly who I wanted to be After managing to correct my negative self-image, I started to define goals. What did I want in my life? How did I want to feel? How did I want to look? Who did I want to be with? I put everything on paper in great detail and divided my big goals into realistic short-term goals. I wrote my own meditation scripts, created my own worksheets, and improved my focus. Because what you visualize, you attract! (Just make sure you practice regularly and imagine that you already have what you want—that’s the trick.)

I reaped the benefits of my new routines and took action After practicing my new skills every day for a few weeks, not only did my mindset change, but my actual reality started to transform. So far I had:

Reduced my stress levels while boosting my ego and mood. Gained clarity on what I wanted. Strengthened my creative potential, which helped me define necessary action steps. While I used to be stuck not knowing where to turn, always attracting troubled men and unhealthy friendships, I was now 92 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

able to let go of relationships that didn’t serve me. I consciously surrounded myself with people who made me feel good. Because I was oozing a different energy, I was inviting completely different people into my life. The man I’ve been with for the last 10 years, for example, is nothing like any other partner I’ve ever had: he loves and accepts me for who I am, he knows how to give and not just take, and he is positive and balanced. By painting the life I wanted in the brightest colors, I realized I still had to:

Detox my body and mind. Develop a mindful attitude (i.e. live in the present moment). Accept setbacks and use them to fine-tune my goals. Love myself unconditionally. I know “visualization and manifestation” can sound a little woowoo. But just like constant advertising makes us buy things we don’t need, constant positive visualization helps us achieve things we really want! Today I have a life, a job, and a partner I love, and I couldn’t be happier.

Again, no healing journey is a piece of cake. But through my transformation, I’ve learned that my mind is an incredibly powerful tool. And so is yours. We’ve all got dreams. Let’s go catch ‘em together!

Be Who You Are.

We all have different personas when we are in different situations. Different personality traits come to the fore and play out when we are in different social groups. Lets face it, the stuff that you discuss over a glass of wine with your girlfriends is not going to come out of the bag around the family dinner table in front of great grandma. FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Kate Spencer 94 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

We wear these different hats on a daily basis and move

between being a partner, daughter, parent, friend, business owner and other aspects without even noticing the transition most of the time. It’s when we are in situations where there is more than one social group present that this can get uncomfortable. Imagine being at an event where you were in the company of your friends and your work colleagues, as well as senior family members and your children...everyone knowing a different side of you and expecting a set of traits and behaviours that they are used to. This is when different faces and social masks become hard to juggle, and you can sometimes lose your own identity in the process. I have experienced this on occasions and cringed when a good friend F-bombs within earshot of my straight laced manager, or when my kid brings up something embarrassing in front of their teacher.

So what do we do? We all have to be a different version of ourselves at different times, so much so that we can lose who we really are some days.

I have found the answer to this is to be as authentic as

you can. Now that is scary when you think about it for a moment. It means being who you really are, warts and all, and not hiding your truth. It means admitting when you make mistakes and showing your human side, knowing that you are not perfect but that you are a perfect work in progress. People comment nowadays that I am authentic, and I am glad about that, but it took a lot of work. It took healing some deep wounds and starting to foster a feeling of being “good enough” even when I was having a bad day. It has been a journey of self Be Who You Are •

forgiveness and finding out who I really am, what I stand for and what I want. And you have to be ok with yourself before you can share this real version of you with the world at large. I am not there completely, I still have moments where people drop in for a coffee and I die a thousand deaths that the authentic version of me has not done the dishes from last night’s dinner.

I worry sometimes that people will think I should have a

bigger house or a better car. I think the difference is that I know that these are patterns from aspects of me that are not quite there yet, not quite integrated and cool with who I am entirely, parts of me that are still wounded and fear judgment.

The more authentic you can be the better. You are sending

out a message to the universe through law of attraction that you are great just as you are and that you do not need to pretend to be anyone else. This opens up your flow in all ways imaginable, and you no longer have to pretend that you really do like Opera instead of Eastenders, or Pino Grigo instead of Lambrusco.

Be who you are, and love who you are. The universe will bring you more of the people who get you and like you once you like yourself and you are comfortable in your own skin, and you’ll be open for random visitors far more frequently.

Love Kate

Hi darling, Many people keep their options open and so are you. He adores you but has become mentally lazy in this relationship. He won't walk away unless you do. I do see a new man in 2 years. Yes it is deceptive but mostly to yourself as the world sees you as an attached woman. You would never carry a dead horse about, why carry this? You are witty, loving, naughty and gorgeous. Egg Sald One of the great things I like about Easter is all the good leftover eggs. Yep, I actually love having different colored eggs rolling around my fridge. No, really. I kind of miss that vibrant pool of color during the rest of the year. We always have boiled eggs. One of my daughters tends urban chickens that keep everyone in the community supplied with eggs, and we make all kinds of items; deviled eggs, tuna salad, potato salad, and egg salad These are great for after school snacks, but before you freak out, I will let you know a trick to keeping egg salad digestible.

By Tanya Jackson 102 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Method!

Ingredients

• Smash peeled eggs, or get a hand chopper (like you see « 3 hard boiled eggs peeled (I save the shells for on TV) ‘cause kids love those my compost pile) things! It’s really fun watching « 1/4 cup mayo (Hellmans them take turns pulverizing is the best) those eggs. Take pics. Life is « 1/4 cup chopped green happening n.o.w. What are olives with pimentos you waiting for? « Salt & pepper to taste • Dump eggs into bowl. Add « Saltine crackers mayo and olives. Mix together. • Now here is the key to great tasting and stomach pleasing egg salad: • Add juice from the olives. Mix into an easy to use mixture. • The vinegar in the juice will counteract the eggyness. Yes, dill pickles and olives help the eggs to digest more evenly. • Toast the saltine crackers. I love egg salad on bread, but the crackers give the egg salad a nice yummy crunch. It’s also fun for you, ‘cause those kids aren’t going to be so “grungry” - you know, grumpy AND hungry. What great memories you’ve made. Food always makes us think of home. Make it a good one!

Throughout history brothers and sisters have had love/hate relationships. There are countless stories of the trials and tribulations siblings endure at the expense of each other. Every brother and sister can recount times from their childhood, most with no less than exceptional clarity, of how they were tortured almost to the brink of madness. Being the oldest child in a family had its privileges such as being able to stay up later than all the other kids or going places with friends without parental supervision. The younger kids would groan when they would hear over and over again “when you’re older ....” and until then they had to go to bed earlier or have mom and dad tag along on their outings. It did not however, exempt you from the feeling of frustration at the hands of your younger siblings.

“When I was growing up if you looked in the dictionary under “pest” you would have seen my younger brother’s picture.” There is an unwritten law that surrounds family, no matter how bad your brother or sister bugged you or how strong the urge to throttle them became, if someone else said something bad about them watch out! It is ok for me to torture my brother or sister but God help anyone else who does. When I was growing up if you looked in the dictionary under “pest” you would have seen my younger brother’s picture. He did everything in his power to drive me crazy. There were days were Sibling Rivalry •

he would repeat everything I said. No matter where I went to try to get away from him he would follow me. I attempted to act like it wasn’t bothering me but not even a Tibetan Monk could have kept his cool for very long under those circumstances. As I began to sweat and lose my cool he would savor every iota of my frustration.

I would walk into my room after school and no sooner did I place my books down onto my bed he would jump from the closet screaming like a B movie actress in a horror film. He would pull the old “I’m not touching you” bit with his finger one millimetre from my nose or cheek. Even the thought of it now makes me want to hit him. I remember one time he was in my room and no matter what I said or threatened he would not get out. Finally at the end of my rope I grabbed his feet and attempted to pull him off my bed. He grabbed a hold of my bed and as the sheets and comforter gave way he clenched onto the mattress with strength I can only surmise was a result of pure adrenaline.

“I had it! Revenge was in order; it was time to think up something good to teach him a lesson. Not long after my parents asked me to watch him while they went out to dinner. Oh yes...” So there we are; I am holding onto his ankles pulling with all that I’m worth and he is totally stretched out half on the bed and half off when the mattress can no longer stand the tension and slides right off the box spring. In his surprise he lost his grip but as I stumbled backward, my grasp on his ankles only tightened as I tried to regain some type of balance. As I tumbled back into the hallway 106 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

he had no choice but to follow. I had it! Revenge was in order; it was time to think up something good to teach him a lesson. Not long after my parents asked me to watch him while they went out to dinner. Oh yes he knew he was in trouble. I could see the fear in his eyes as he wondered what I had in store for him. I let him sweat for half an hour or so and then I tackled him, hogged tied him with some duct tape and laid him in the front yard in the rain. Oh the glorious justice I felt was indescribable. I savored the victory as I enjoyed the peace and quiet. After a while and long before my parents returned I set him free with a warning of the possibility of a reoccurrence if he didn’t stop bugging me. When we watch videos of those days we have a good laugh and he agrees with us that at times he was unbearable. I credit him for the patience that I have with my children, growing up with him made dealing with anyone else easy. My older sister and brother had their fair share of sibling conflicts as well. When my brother got his first car he was allowed to drive to high school. This was a big deal because we lived in the country and the bus ride was usually an hour long not to mention the “cool factor” of having his own wheels. He refused to give my sister, who was two years his junior, a ride until my mother stepped in. It wasn’t until later that she discovered every time my brother drove my sister to school she not only had to ride in the back but was required to lay down flat on the seat so that whenever he drove by people on the sidewalk no one could see her in the car as he drove by. This wasn’t a surprise to my sister who endured more than a little aggravation at the hands of our older brother. His reason was nothing more than the fact that he did not want to be seen with her in public. So if by some horrible twist of fate they had to walk somewhere he insisted that she walk at least ten feet behind or in front of him so again no one would know they were related.

Every family has their stories and each story seems to have three sides, his side, her side and somewhere in middle is the side that is the truth.

Although most brothers and sisters start life fighting and arguing and praying for the day they can move out and get away from each other things will change. As they grow they will come to realize that family is one of the most important things in this world and one of the only things that you can truly count on in this life.
