Taking Change In Your Stride Can Lead To
Greater Things
Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life. What were you put here to add, expand or change in the world? What are you good at, what do you enjoy and what makes your heart swell with pride? Are you doing that? In fact, were you doing that and somehow has “that” thing that made you so happy ... changed? Maybe someone else changed and now you find yourself at the bottom of a very dark place evaluating the pieces that are left and wondering what picture you can build with what remains. This month’s cover story found herself in exactly that position. On the outside, her perfect life was the envy of many of her social circle, yet inside, Eva Serrano had yet to fully tap the scope of her creative and entrepreneurial abilities. Now a successful interior designer, this talented Spanish vixen spends her time creating couture interiors for some of the most inspiring properties in Britain, all while running her own highly in-demand shop based in Edinburgh and her own lighting brand. Women compromise a lot in our lifetimes. I’m not sure we 14 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
would have it any other way but I often wonder if a man really understands the breadth of sacrifice his partner is willing to give.
We leave our families for our husband’s homes, bear his children and give them his last name, put our own dreams on simmer (or often totally on hold) and we bend when otherwise perhaps we wouldn’t. All of this in the name of love and loyalty. Family and the sake of honour. In Eva’s case, she sacrificed her home country, fulfilled the role of a strong businessman’s wife and carved out her own niche which was both colourful and commendable. One day, she found that much in her world was not as it seemed and was forced to make a change. To use Eva’s words, she found herself forced to “evaluate who the (fuck) I was and what I wanted”. I couldn’t have said it better myself. She is a classic example of how far you can go if you choose to be yourself, push your strengths to capacity and take no prisioners. I hope you will enjoy reading Eva’s story and some of her eclectic and selfdescribed “quirky” designs from her shop. Eva is a shining example of how to #HatTrickYourLife and we welcome her to the team effective September 2014...

Cover Story
Redesigning Eva Eva was born in Spain in 1973. She is an Interior Designer with a “fever-pitch” passion for interiors and owner of “Casa Morada” (Spanish for “The Purple House” or “Homely Abode”) a home interiors showroom and interiors brand in the South of Edinburgh. She is a divorced mum of two children - Naroa, a 12 years old girl and Lewis, a 10 year old boy.

Eva Serrano
Eva developed a passion for art, interiors and architecture in her childhood, growing up in Granada, Southern Spain, an inspiring and enchanting town in Andalusia, deeply rooted in Moorish history, ancient symbolism, multicultural heritage, and world-famous for The Alhambra Castle. She moved to Edinburgh in 1992 and studied an Honours Degree in Business Management & Marketing at Napier University. After a stint in Marketing and Advertising, she stopped fighting and surrendered to her true passion Interiors. After the birth of her first child, she went onto study Interior Design, European History of Art at Edinburgh University, and Fine Art and Textile Design at the Edinburgh College of Art. This wider visual perspective gives Eva a much more “holistic” approach and unique ability to understand the full context of an interior space and its visual dialogue with all the interior elements that inhabit it, including lighting, furniture, art and textiles. Eva has exhibited in London’s top trade interior design shows, including Decorex and Designers Block. She has also been featured in top UK magazines including Hello Magazine, Real Homes, UK Lighting, A1 Lighting, Total Lighting, Hospitality & Leisure Design. She has made the front cover of The Scotland on Sunday “In Style” Magazine where she was christened “Lady of Spain” and is increasingly known as the “Queen of Eclectic” in the Scottish world of interiors. In 2009 she launched her own statement wall lighting brand, Kandabi, becoming the first female designer in
Scotland to design, manufacture and launch her own lighting collection. Kandabi was awarded 5 star product rating (the maximum score) by the prestigious UK Lighting Magazine. There are 9 different registered designs currently in the collection and bespoke commissions. It comes as no surprise that Eva’s interior design “fetish” is lighting. She is captivated by its powerful and transforming qualities in any interior space and believes it is the “fairy magic star dust” and secret ingredient in any interior space. Eva’s signature style can be best described as “Eclectic chic with a quirky mid-century twist”. With a “break all rules” and highly intuitive approach, Eva places a strong emphasis on injecting individuality and character in an interior space. Her aim is the creation of a relaxed aesthetic with a “lived-in” vibe and a touch of drama and surprise. Eva’s forte is to help you achieve a dream space that encapsulates who you are and what you stand for. Her personal interior design mantra is “Buy only what you love. An invisible line will join the dots”. The launch of Casa Morada in July 2012 was the culmination of her personal and professional dream to create a true “3D canvas to play with”, to finally unleash her interior design inner “beast”, and to inspire all visitors with a welcome “Mi casa es su casa” Mediterranean warmth. Showcasing a highly eclectic, quirky and unique mix of contemporary and midcentury furniture, lighting, textiles and accessories and celebrating its 2nd year Anniversary, Casa Morada is increasingly regarded as the most inspirational home interiors shop in the city of Edinburgh.
MY STORY
is about following your dreams, about finding your true passion, and above all about being true to yourself. I could talk about Casa Morada, my shop, my brand, my business goals, my signature style and bore you till the cows come home, but this is not about some big professional goal, or desire to ‘make it’, or search for validation, but a most personal journey that began after the epiphany that was my divorce. Eckart Tolle, one of the most enlightened spiritual teachers alive today claims that “if you have not suffered in life, there is no depth to you as a human, for suffering cracks open the shell of ego and thus becomes the end of suffering”. I had a wonderful middle class life, a big house beautifully 20 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
decorated to my very successfuland now ex-husband’s taste, two amazing kids, social status, nice clothes, and great holidays... I was “living the dream”. Then, thanks to my husband’s adultery (I really say it with gratitude, for it was unbeknown the best thing that could have happened to me) I found myself on divorce proceedings, utterly lost, lonely, craving the love of my family way back in Spain, financially struggling, self-identity gone, self esteem in tatters, and ego shattered. In other words... suffering. It was then that the epiphany happened, by a most unexpected twist of fate, I was forced to literally re-build, re-invent myself, re-evaluate my values, my beliefs, my boundaries, my dreams, and most importantly of all, forced to look in the mirror and ask myself for the first time who the (fuck) I was, and what I really, really, REALLY wanted out of life.
“It was then that the epiphany happened, by a most unexpected twist of fate, I was forced to literally re-build, reinvent myself, re-evaluate my values, my beliefs, my boundaries...” I realised that my mission in life was to bring happiness to others, to touch people’s lives in a positive way. I discovered that my true passion was “to create”, for my head is always exploding with ideas and interior design provided the 3D blank canvas that I craved in order to unleash the creative beast inside me. A beast that had been dormant and forgotten since childhood. Cover Story: Redesigning Eva •

Lacking God’s gift and fine art genius of my fellow Spaniard, Artist, and Father of Modern Art, Pablo Picasso, and lacking the technical brilliance of architects and interior designers (which I had worked in as a personal hobby) was definitely “my zone”. Then, guess what? The miracles started to happen...
I have learnt that when you align yourself with your true purpose and true passion in life, with mind, body, heart, and soul, your destiny then begins to unfold with ease. Doors start to open, co-operation from people is allowed in, and serendipity shifts to 5th gear. The events that unfolded after my personal and spiritual transformation are really nothing short of amazing. In March 2012, on my usual walk to the local park with my kids, and by then a fully qualified and experienced Interior Designer, I noticed for the first time this big street shop which apparently had been empty for months... and, you know what? It kept calling me. I had no idea about home interiors, about retail, or how to even run a shop, let alone money for the substantial renovation required, but I felt compelled to meet up with the landlord. Two weeks later, I had signed the lease. As I started the renovation myself, I quickly realised the naivety in thinking I could possibly turn I came to realize that every time around such a horror-show of derelict commercial space I described myself as a victim, I with botch jobs and disrepair all over the place. Then, 3 was taking away my own ability to weeks later, an email out of the blue came through from control my path. an interior designer I had met the previous year at the Decorex trade show in London... wanting to commission a 22 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
bespoke large neon lighting piece for The Royal Family in Jordan! “Yeah, right!”, I thought. Utterly exhausted, sleep deprived, and holding an industrial belt floor sander in one hand and tapping on my iPhone with the other, and barely time in my life to go to the loo (let alone bespoke Royal commissions) I found myself tapping a stupidly absurd sum of money in my disinterested reply. Well, 24 hours later, hair covered in Asbestos and having a fag break, a cheery email came back demanding immediate start of the piece and confirming full payment in advance had been wired. Minutes later, fag now hanging out of the corner of my mouth, eyes popping out of my sockets and somehow suspended in mid-air like a Keanu Reeves scene from The Matrix, I saw a “stupid sum” bank transfer, from the European Arab Bank, gleaming like a jewel in my bank account.

“The whole universe was continuously reassuring me, silently whispering into my ear: “You are doing the right thing”. And then, the big opening date came... Guess what?” The roll out of serendipity, accidental coincidences, and miracles did not stop there. All the right people, with the ‘right skills at the right time’, kept turning up out of nowhere. Then came the discovery of hidden architectural original features and gems in the shop. The whole universe was continuously reassuring me, silently whispering into my ear: “You are doing the right thing”. And then, the big opening date came... guess what? ‘Stupid sum’ had been fully spent, so I had no money to buy stock! Oh, Lord. So, I loaded up a van with my best personal belongings, beautiful and full of sentimental value. Furniture, accessories, and art pieces lovingly collected over the many years made their way out of my home, and into my shop. Yes, I had to reach for the hanky each time I sold a piece. The conversations with buyers usually went as follows: “Are you really, REALLY sure you want to buy it?” “You don’t want to sell it to me, do you?” “Oh, no, I mean, yes I want to sell it!” It was soul destroying. With each piece sold, a part of my past went with it, until, finally, there was nothing left. Cover Story: Redesigning Eva •

Gradually the word about Casa Morada spread, new stock was purchased, people stopped to photograph our window displays, regular customers and cult followers grew, staff and interns came on board, and home interior projects rolled in, follwed by commercial projects. Someone very influential in the Scottish interior industry said to me, “Eva, it takes balls of steel to do a highly personal and authentic eclectic look in the ‘play-it-safe’ land that is our beloved Scottish interior scene”. Yes, my signature interior style could be described as ‘eclectic chic with a quirky mid-century twist’. Yes, more London than Edinburgh indeed, local market unprepared, ahead of the time, eyebrows and curiosity on the rise, but hey, there is always a maverick in every field.
“My mantra is ‘Buy only what you love. An invisible line will join the dots’. You have a distinct personal visual and emotional filter, so be brave.” Casa Morada is here to help you embrace, celebrate and express your individuality. No, I am not saying “be whoever you want to be”. I am saying “BE WHO YOU REALLY ARE”; your true, innermost, unique, amazing, perfectly imperfect, most authentic self. Then, ensure your home and private sanctuary is a reflection of this True You by 26 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
surrounding yourself with things, colours, and textures that you are intuitively and naturally drawn to. My mantra is ‘Buy only what you love. An invisible line will join the dots’. You have a distinct personal visual and emotional filter, so be brave. So long as you love it, it will cohabit beautifully and with any other chosen elements in your space. And then, the magic happens... when there is true harmony in your interior space and it becomes a true expression of yourself, everything else in your life falls into place. No, it’s not just about aesthetics. Casa Morada believes in the art of harmonising your space for a more fulfilling, authentic, and happy living. Cover Story: Redesigning Eva •

As for me, I am enjoying this amazing adventure andt most personal journey, and continue to follow my dream. I have no idea where it will take me, but I am flowing with the Universe and loving every minute of it! Watch this space.

Fear...
Release it For Good
FIND ME ONLINE HERE
By Andrea Sullenger 30 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
Webster says Fear is this ~ “an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.” What do you say it is? Most anyone would admit that
fear has played some roll in their life at some point. How about as an entrepreneur, how has fear dictated what you will do and what you won’t do? Fear has a powerful force that can steer us away from what we really want if we let it. Or, if you can evaluate fear for what it really is, you can allow it to propel you into something magical.
Let’s break fear down and get some perspective
on what it is and what it is not. First, fear is a feeling or a sensation within you. It appears when we have a desire and a belief that conflict with one another. Fear isn’t always true or rational. Fear is simply a response. The majority of the time, if not all of the time, when fear arises within you, it is your brain talking, or sometimes yelling and not your heart. It is the brain resisting and blocking your soul and heart energy from flowing freely. It is your brain reverting back to habit of thought. It is your self talk you have rehearsed many, many times over bubbling back up to the surface. Your brain holds on to this self talk and belief as truth but so often it isn’t correct and we owe it to ourselves to evaluate and question the fear. Question the self talk, the belief that has become habitual about who we are and what we are capable of. Fear... Release it for Good •

Take a look at these 6 concrete steps to address, undo and release fear from your life for good. When you first feel the emotion of fear rise up step back. Move away from the pressure to address the situation or topic immediately. Remember that unless it literally is life or death you have time to step back and evaluate. Slow – down. This might be the hardest piece for most of us. The slow-down is the opposite response we generally feel when fear comes up. It is also the opposite of what society tells us to do. Today everything is at hyper speed and in-turn, the slow – down can feel awkward. That’s okay, it is necessary and once you begin to practice it you will adore this new tool. You will find that you begin to use it in multiple ways in your life and work.
“Your brain holds on to this self talk and belief as truth but so often it isn’t correct and we owe it to ourselves to evaluate and question the fear.” Ask yourself to get honest about the emotion of the fear you are feeling. What is the desire you have? What is the conflict you have? Is the self talk or belief you have (generally the conflict statement) really 32 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
true? How do you know it is true, do you have evidence to prove it? I find that this questioning or challenging of the assumptive belief can literally dissolve the fear immediately. I like to write my answers out but you may choose to do this verbally or written. Either way works, just get it out from your brain. Decide on your action. Again, I like to write my action steps out. They feel more concrete to me when I can see them written on paper. Take the action. Action always moves fear to a quiet space back in the corner. Acknowledge out loud or written what you had to become in order to get through the fear.
Fear doesn’t need to paralyze or rule over any portion of your life. Putting these fear rules into place and into practice will begin to serve you well and open new paths for you to journey down.

Entrepreneurs, this is a tough one. Do you know how to take time off? Summer conjures up images of sunny beaches, sand in your toes, gentle breezes and seductive cocktails. For some anyway. When’s the last time you took a vacay? If you’re good at scheduling time off, more power to you. Congratulations on realizing you need down time to stay focused during other times. For many entrepreneurs who struggle with how to balance time off and still forge ahead with grand plans, here are some tips, including a delicious time management tool.

Working Through As a business geek who gets ultra excited by the latest scheduling tool and similar things, I totally get— and celebrate — your passion for work. But here’s the thing:
Yin & Yang Need Each Other Life consists of yin and yang, the balance of energies. Yin and yang are not opposing forces. This is key. They’re two sides that together create a whole and neither is as strong or effective without the other.
It’s a beautiful thing. It’s the harmony of life. Do it for Ulterior Motives Allow yourself this in your working life. And not just because I wish you well but because it’s going to make your work feel more rewarding and be of better quality gleaned from new clarity. You’ll be able to focus better, probably the #1 most needed element for achieving your goals. So even if you feel 38 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
guilty taking down time, when you realize that it’s going to make you more productive and efficient, that could be the motivating factor you need. You’ll end up healthier and happier in the process.
You’re a Whole Human Entrepreneur or employee, you’re a whole human. You need many valuable things in your life besides work, no matter how dedicated you are to changing the world with your dazzling ideas.
When to Break it Up My brilliant (and extraordinarily accomplished) father told me to take frequent 15-minute breaks while working. It can feel challenging to stop and break when you’re an extreme type of personality and you’re digging into a task. Breaks during work days have been shown to lead to greater productivity. Here’s the best tool I’ve found for bridging that gap between driven focus and the benefits of breaks.
One Tomato or Two? Championed by many, the effective and likeable time Embody Your Sexy Geek •

management system, Pomodoro, is based on the simple principle of working in 25-minute segments with 5-minute breaks and seeing how many of these chunks or “pomodoros” (Italian for tomato — yum) any given task requires. Buy a cute pomodoro / tomato timer if the physical timer helps to motivate or inspire you. Get it here. Free online timers are here, for your choice of simple screen styles.

Details can make a difference in your motivation. Put it in a separate little window and dig in. The concept of 25-minute focused blocks is not arbitrary. It comes from studying human nature. Pull out this simple strategy when you need to get something done pronto. It works.
Go Bigger Big picture, the focus and break rhythm applies not just to 40 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
your work day but to your whole year, hence vacations. There are a million excuses not to take a vacation when you’re building a business. Vacations can feel as if they’ll interrupt opportunities, anger or turn away clients, cost money, require scheduling. What about the cost to your attitude, your life’s flow and your quality of life? You’ll find that the rewards are enormous. Clients respect you when you value your own work and play time. Your right clients will wait for you, the lesson of valuing yourself so you can properly value others. The experiences you’ll have will be savored for months and years to come. Vacation-planning experts advise everyone to plan their next vacation while still on a current one. This isn’t meant purely to drive tourism; it’s because looking forward to such getaways enriches our lives and gives us a fun future goal.
Try Baby Steps If planning a full-fledged escape feels too much for you right now, try this. Check out the fantastic www.airbnb.com and pick a pretty, intriguinglooking place within one or two hours from you. Book it and have a surprise long weekend. You’ll feel great and come away with lasting memories.

There was a time when Mindfulness was considered to be the ‘outthere’ stuff of wacky woo-woo land. Meditation too was seen as the exclusive domain of yogi’s, hippies and Buddhist monks. But attitudes have changed - and are changing. We now live in an age when high technology and need for speed seems to be taking over our lives; an uncertain economy and a volatile job market creates anxieties; and escalating levels of expectation put us under even more pressure. Against this backdrop, we can find ourselves all too often in a state of “too much to do; not enough time; and massive questioning of our life’s direction and purpose.” At the heart of it all, lies a yearning for peace of mind, mental clarity and a feeling of ease and contentment. And the simple realisation that our effectiveness, our growth and our long term happiness, depend on it.
ARE WE GOING MAD? For most professionals nowadays, working life is
full of challenges. Some of us are successful, satisfied and doing well. But too many of us are unhappy. We’re stressed Bring Mindfulness Into Your Worklife •

out and quite possibly confused. We may appear to be effective, but we’re churning up inside.
“We often forget that our mind contains limitless resources and possibilities - for creativity, kindness, compassion, insight, and wisdom.”
Turning away from work—or whatever else we think is the problem—is not usually an option, even if we wanted it that way. So we grit our teeth and get on with it. That’s not great for us, it’s not great for our work and it’s not great for our relationships.
We often forget that our mind contains limitless resources and possibilities - for creativity, kindness, compassion, insight, and wisdom. It has a huge capacity for energy and drive, and so do we. However, our minds also work against us: they can produce incessant and annoying, limiting chatter, and rule our lives like an untamed beast. And the constant images and noises that we see and hear around us in our external world, simply serve to amplify their effect. Eventually we can find ourselves trapped and battling with a tangled web of ruminative thoughts, repetitive, destructive
emotions, and impulsive and addictive behaviours. Sometimes we would like to just shut our mind down – switch off and go home! Sadly, my friend, this is one thing we cannot do. However, we can learn how to put our mind to good use instead.
SO WHAT EXACTLY IS MINDFULNESS? For thousands of years, Eastern traditions have
believed it possible to change one’s mental powers and emotional patterns by regularly experiencing meditative states.Through Mindfulness, we can train our minds to function in a more efficient and beneficial way. By training us to focus moment by moment on where we are and what we’re doing, mindfulness can help us to consciously choose what we will pay attention to and so how we will behave. It jolts us out of the repetitive cycle of negative thinking that traps us and prevents us from being more creative, loving and constructive in our thinking. This won’t just give us some relief from stress; it can improve our health and actually change, even transform, how we live and work.

increasingly compelling case for Mindfulness as a beneficial practice for us all. Take, for example, the field of neuroplasticity, which rests on the premise that the functioning and structure of the brain changes in response to experience. Studies have shown that the way we intentionally shape our internal focus of attention in mindfulness practice, induces a particular state of brain activation during the practice: an ability to be present to the sensory flow of here-and-now.
ADDITIONAL FINDINGS If you practise focusing attention on your breath or a mantra, the brain will restructure itself to make concentration easier. If you practise calm acceptance during meditation, you will develop a brain that is more resilient to stress. If you meditate while cultivating feelings of love and compassion, your brain will develop in such a way that you spontaneously feel more connected to others. With repetition, mindfulness can develop from being a habit or practice, into an enduring personality trait. 50 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
HOW TO PRACTISE MINDFULNESS There is a wide array of practices to choose from. You can experiment with them one at a time, or you can try combining them. The important thing is to create a practice that works for you, and do it regularly. Here are five of my favourites: MEDITATION is the traditional and best known,
although not always the easiest, tool you can use to access mindfulness. It does become easier with practice, but it need not be difficult for beginners. Simply find a comfortable place, free of distractions, and quiet your mind. The key with meditation is not to judge, and to simply notice what comes up... it’s all good!
BREATHE. Very simple and can be done as you go about
your daily activities. Focus on your breathing, drawing in from your belly rather than from your chest. Try to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Focusing on the sound and rhythm of your breath, especially when you’re upset, can have a calming effect and help you stay grounded in the present moment. A convenient method when you feel you don’t have time to meditate! Listening to music. Music therapy has become a popular Bring Mindfulness Into Your Worklife •

form of complementary medicine, and can also make a great mindfulness exercise. Play soothing new-age music, classical music, or another type of slow-tempo music to feel calming effects, and really focus on the sound and vibration of each note, the feelings that the music brings up within you, and other sensations that are happening “right now” as you listen. If other thoughts creep into your head, just notice, and gently bring your attention back to the current moment and the music you are hearing.
COMMUNING WITH NATURE. Walking, sitting or lying
down in nature brings a huge array of sensory experiences that help you to connect with the here and now, as well as appreciate, and connect with, the wonders and mystery of our planet - of which we are part. Listen to the sounds of nature, open your eyes to what you see, touch and feel the other species around you, excite your sense of smell, and taste the earth’s produce. Become aware of how your body responds, and notice how your sense of wellness gradually shifts.
OBSERVING YOUR THOUGHTS. Sometimes it can
be extremely difficult to stop focusing on the rapid stream of thoughts running through our minds and the idea of meditation can actually cause more stress! Rather than

working against the voice in your head, or getting involved in your thoughts, you can sit back and “observe” your thoughts. As you observe them, you might find your mind quieting, and the thoughts becoming less stressful. (If not, try journalling as a way of processing all those thoughts so you can decrease their intensity and try again.)

All different questions, all geared up for a similar set of answers. While I worked as a consultant to Ford Motor Co., I worked in the same building where they trained their apprentices in Dagenham. At the end of the two year programme, they produced fully ready apprentices ready to join the workforce proper. You know what was the single most important factor of this success?
The training. Nothing less, nothing more. You know what was the biggest challenge they had?
The training. Massively unpredictable even though there was a curriculum to work towards. In the L&D world, it is easy to get lost in the outputs of what we produce and forget about the outcomes. I’m very guilty of this. Performance support at work is all about providing learning at the point of need. This is the single biggest challenge facing L&D departments everywhere. There’s no silver bullet for this stuff. We have to doggedly work at educating the business into what that difference is. When they keep asking for stats on bums on seats and spend per head, that’s fine but it means very little. We need to be providing information on outcomes. That means things like: Outputs VS Outcomes •
55
A person’s time management and personal organisation improved because they understood how to make that happen A cohort of people completing a programme of activity ready to take on the next business challenge A fully trained group ready to join the workforce Improved performance by a team who undertook some proper team development Greater use of technology or systems because of improved literacy and education levels I look at that list and I know that those outcomes are what I should be focused on. But because it’s easier to describe the outputs, I lose sight of the outcomes. More pertinently, what I think happens is that we forget that we’re the experts in learning and performance support. That means we have a mantle on which not many others in our organisation can occupy. We may be able to argue the toss about which delivery method is better than another, but the challenge is how we help others to understand that we know how to achieve the outcome best. I’ve had many an argument with senior directors because of this.
It’s our single most difficult task we’ll ever have to do. 56 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Something has really been bothering me. It is keeping me awake at night. That something is... your dream. What’s bothering me is how many people are living halfway, on autopilot, and will never realize how much time they have wasted until their time has nearly run out. So many of you have a dream. You have a passion. You have gifts to share and people you’ve never met who desperately need you. Yet you stay covered. There is no worse feeling than regret. There is nothing more crushing than the knowledge that life is short and that you’ve squandered it away. You can wish, or you can act. You can wonder what life might have been like, or you can make it the way you dreamed it could be.
I am amazed at how many people contact me,
sit with me, talk to me, share their journey with tears in their eyes and longing in their hearts. I hear them, I feel their pain and confusion. They are lost, feeling like time is wasting away, unsure of the next steps but certain that they cannot go on one more day in their current reality of anxiety, uncertainty or financial strain. They want more.
So we paint a brighter picture. They tell me what they want. As they talk, they light up. They begin to picture their new life. They see themselves at

peace, healthy, abundant, with clear goals and a blue print for reaching them. Their faces change as they imagine a life that is joyful and fulfilling. They feel the warmth of having more control, more time, more freedom, more money. They are whole with the fulfillment that washes over them as they see their new life. And then the meeting is over. Real life resumes. And they vanish. I never hear from them again. Fear crept in and replaced their fire with selfdoubt and skepticism.
“I handed her a gift, and fear whispered to her “Don’t take it! It might work and then you would have to change!”
I had one woman who couldn’t afford to coach with me one on one. I respected the fact that the median income in her country was drastically different from mine. In fact, one month of coaching with me was MORE than the average monthly income in the rural, poverty stricken country she lived in. So I offered a major discount and customized payment plan. I offered several free resources. I made it impossible for her to refuse because after speaking with her, I could feel the difference she would make for people. But she bailed. She said if it were meant to be, she would be able to afford the regular price. If it were meant to be, her internet connection would be better. If it were meant to be I would live closer to her... I handed her a gift, and fear whispered to her “Don’t take it! It might work and then you would have to change!”

How many times have you talked yourself out of your own dream? Let me say this as gently as I can. I’ll be just fine. Whether you take a step or not, plenty of people will. So I’ll be ok. But what will happen to YOU? Well? Where do you stand? Will you be counted amongst the skeptics? The fearful? The people who say that life is hard and that success is impossible? Or will you be counted among the visionaries, the trailblazers, the beautiful creative souls who leap and soar and CHANGE? Watch this video. It is 6 minutes of your life. This video is circulating through the most powerful groups I know. It embodies the mindset I want each and every one of you to embrace. It is the core of my work and my program.

3 Tips For Choosing
Healthier Skincare
Products
This article was supposed to be about common skincare ingredients to avoid. You know the culprits; parabens, formaledhyde, SLS, BHA, triclosan…and especially our beloved fragrance! But as I tried to narrow down the list, to a few highly-memorable ingredients, I got stuck. FIND ME ONLINE HERE

Is ‘probable endocrine disruptor’ worse than ‘may be contaminated with known carcinogens’? What about skin sensitivities and allergens, if they don’t affect everyone? What about developmental disruptors which are clearly bad…but mainly of concern to pregnant women? And then even with my list, I started digging into the research. Oh my. Overwhelming. Aside from sorting through the science, you have to figure out if the researchers might have a bias (funding by a large cosmetics company, anyone?) It’s no wonder a normal person, who isn’t as interested in this stuff as I am, might feel overwhelmed and confused. It IS confusing. There is a ton of conflicting information about the safety of cosmetic ingredients, and a lot of marketing to distract us. Plus, no one has really studied the cumulative effect of exposure to all these chemicals…so there is a lot we just don’t know. I stopped in frustration. But while making myself a cup of tea (chamomile & peppermint!) I realized, it doesn’t have to be this complicated. In fact, I avoid most of this ingredient confusion in my own life by following these three tips. Give them a try. We could all use a little simpler, healthier living. 3 Tips For Choosing Healthier Skincare Products •
71
Three simple tips for choosing healthier skincare products
1
Use fewer products
One major grey area in questionable cosmetic ingredients is about cumulative exposure. While the amount of parabens in your moisturizer might be minimal, what about the total amount you’re exposed to everyday from your shower gel, shampoo, moisturiser, shaving cream, conditioner, and makeup? What happens when you get that cumulative exposure, almost daily, for several years? We just don’t know.
The simple solution is to reduce your exposure, by reducing the amount of products you use. Do you really need a body scrub and a cellulite cream and a shaving cream and a self-tanner and a foot cream and a body moisturiser? Could you get by with a loofah for exfoliating (or a body brush) and one good quality moisturiser? Or better yet, use a body oil (like some sweet almond oil with essential oils) in 72 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
place of your moisturizer altogether? What about your makeup routine? What about your haircare routine? Where can you simplify and streamline your products? There are so many benefits to using fewer products: Less clutter! Fewer products taking space on your bathroom shelves, cupboards and counters! Save time getting ready in the morning, by just using a few key products. Save time choosing, buying and replacing products. Save money by buying fewer, better quality products.
2
Use a few simple and effective DIY substitutions
I love DIY beauty, but I realize not everyone has the time, or the interest, in making their own beauty products. However, there are a few simple substitutions you can use to cut back on the amount of products you buy. Use sweet almond oil on a cotton ball as eye makeup remover.
3 Tips For Choosing Healthier Skincare Products •
73
Learn to love coconut oil! Some readers use it as makeup remover, face cleanser, moisturiser, to smooth hair frizzies, in the best DIY deodorant…and of course eating and cooking! Use a handmade soap (which you can buy) instead of shower gel. Worried about dry skin? Try one which includes shea or cocoa butter. Or just use Dr. Bronners Castille Soap in the shower. Make your own body oil using sweet almond oil or grapeseed oil, and a few drops of your favourite essential oils. This takes 2 minutes to make, and a bottle will last for months! You can also use this blend as bath oil. Cleanse your face with the Oil Cleansing Method. Again it takes a couple minutes to mix up (just pour the ingredients in a bottle) and it lasts for months! Use honey as a face mask. (No recipe needed, just apply the honey, wait a few minutes, and rinse!) Use pure rosewater or witch hazel extract as a facial toner. or make your own facial toner blend. Use a body brush or exfoliating glove instead of a body scrub, or make your own body scrub. 74 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
Here is a list of some of my favourite DIY beauty recipes, if you’re ready to try making your own!
3
Avoid fragrance
I’m sorry I had to include this one. Because I know how much we all love perfume, and how we love scented products! (In fact, I was a huge Bath & Body Works addict while living in the USA…but alas, they’re just filled with artificial chemical scents!) I’m not talking about all-natural perfumes. Please support all-natural perfume makers, and indulge in these delicious scents. I’m talking about the chemical ingredient labelled fragrance on cosmetic bottles. Because that one little word, fragrance, hides a multitude of potential dangers. Cosmetic companies claim that the formulation of their fragrance is their intellectual property – so therefore they can’t list the individual ingredients on the label.
That means, we don’t know what chemicals make up the fragrance in our products! One Environmental Working Group study showed that fragrance includes an average of 14 chemicals, including hormone distruptors and allergens. 3 Tips For Choosing Healthier Skincare Products •
75
Tips for avoiding fragrance Look for products labelled fragrance-free (as ‘unscented’ might mean the product contains fragrance-masking chemicals). Choose products made with essential oils, which will be included in the ingredients list. Buy all natural perfumes instead of synthetic. Give yourself time to adjust. After a few weeks of fewer artificial fragrances, your nose will get very sensitive to noticing smells – and you may even find that some of your previous favourite scents seem too strong for you!
Now I’d like to hear from you. Which of these tips are you going to try this week? What product can you give up, or find a healthier replacement for?

On June 10, 2014, the Etihad Airways celebrated the launch of the new airline service between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), CA, and Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH), Dubai, at the legendary Hearst Home Estate in Beverly Hills, CA. Hearst Home once belonged to the media mogul William Randolph Hearst. Today, Hearst Home is considered the most expensive house on the market in the entire United States, worth $165 million dollars. It is approximately 6.25 acres of land and 75,000 square feet of living space. Former United State President John F. Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline Kennedy honeymooned in this home. The home is a celebrity itself, having appeared in the movies “Bodyguard” and “Godfather”, graced the cover of Vanity Fair, featured in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, and has been leased by celebrities to celebrate everything from Rihanna’s birthday bash to a party for Prince Albert of Monaco. Upon the arrival, the red carpet was rolled out to its elite VIP guests and welcomed with a performance from the classical Arabian Ayala dancers. The H-shaped residence exhibits a perfect combination of Spanish and Italian style, with intricately carved ceilings and paneled walls, French doors, balconies, arched ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows, which overlook the famous cascading waterfalls to the pool and the Venetian columns beyond the pool house.
After the reception, the guests were escorted to their tables and each table had a name. It was named after the islands off the coast of Abu Dhabi. The Etihad Airways’ extravagance gala was filled with almost 500 guests including Yousef Al Otaiba, UAE Ambassador to the United States, Michael H. Permission To Be
PowHERful
I work with women of many different ages and stages in life, yet one thing remains constant across the board – our struggle to give ourselves permission to be powHERful.

By Charlene SanJenko
“All of us want to be powerful and successful. But if our drive to get and maintain power drains us and strains our relationships, we never truly enjoy our professional or material success and it’s simply not worth it. Living our life deeply and with happiness, having time to care for our loved ones – this is another kind of success, another kind of power, and it is much more important.” Thich Nhat Hahn, The Art of Power I recently read the amazing work of Thich N. Hahn. It was this paragraph that really landed for me. I pondered, pondered and pondered further greatly interested in what this respected author, poet and peace activist had to say on the subject of power – the very thing that has been my passion for years. But power from a different place, which is why I refer to it as ‘powHER‘ in my company’s name, “PowHERhouse“. In 2000 I decided that I was done chasing power and was ready to begin my journey to reclaim my PowHER. I wasn’t sure where to begin but I knew for me it was somewhere between leaving the corporate world to pursue my entrepreneurial mission and exiting the rat race of a busy urban centre with a move to a small rural community and a Permission to be PowHERful •

simpler life. Over the past 14 years, I’ve continued on this journey and guided hundreds of women on their own.
What I Have Learned The Art of Reclaiming Your PowHER… This is a process of slowly letting go and building on what is. As physical beings, we live in physical bodies throughout this lifetime. For me, the journey to reclaim my PowHER had to begin through a physical transformation – a deeper connection with my physical Self to improve on my sense of Self and my place in this world. The stronger I became through eating well, moving often and having a positive mindset, the stronger I became in other areas of my life. This transformation required a simple yet diligent Practice, a Practice I now teach to the women I have the pleasure of working with locally, nationally and internationally, The Practice of PowHERful Living Explored!
Deprivation Doesn’t Work For some reason there still exists a belief that in order to have one thing we must give-up something else. We have been brought up with an ‘either/or‘ mentality. Over the years, I have discovered the beauty in ‘both‘. First we
need to get super-clear on the essence of what we want (What’s the experience we’re looking for?) and discover a means to fulfil on that desire. Don’t feel like you can give up chocolate? Don’t. Find a yummy and satisfying low-sugar substitute like chocolate protein peanut-butter balls. The point is, we were not born to suffer through deprivation. It doesn’t have a place in a life where you are living deeply, fully engaged and consistently happy. Deprivation doesn’t work.
There is PowHER in Numbers Sometimes we obsess over the wrong numbers – those on the scale, in our bank account and or on our dress-size label. However, the numbers that are truly important – the most important ones – are those that measure our quality relationships. True powHER and ultimate potential lies in people. Our friendships, personal relationships, collaborative business relationships, strategic alliances and partnerships are the most important measure of our success – those with ourselves, with each other and with the Universe.
Clear Space To Be Great ‘Having time to care for our loved ones...’ is an important part of the quote above. Something crucial to remember: YOU are one of your loved ones. Most clients I work with have forgotten this. They’ve filled their lives with Permission to be PowHERful •
89
commitments, obligations and responsibilities around family and work, and have left zero time for claiming, maintaining and sustaining their own PowHER… until they are on the brink of it disappearing completely. It takes work and discipline, but it is important to clear space and understand that your self-care is a priority. The best thing you can do for your loved ones is role-model the actions you’d like them to take! Our ‘walk your talk’.
Gamechanger It is confidence in our bodies, minds and spirits that allows us to keep looking for new adventures, new directions to grow in, and new lessons to learn – which is what life is all about. Oprah Winfrey Most women have been brought up to believe that the role of fitness in our lives is to help us ‘lose weight‘. Period. PowHERhouse is out to change that. And we believe this will be a big change – a Gamechanger, in fact. Quite simply, we believe the role of fitness is to help us feel stronger, more energetic, confident and vibrant in our lives. As we grow stronger, we grow more attractive and magnetic – literally – to the people and opportunities we are aligned with to continue moving forward towards fulfilling 90 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
our purpose. We lovingly call this ‘The Muscle Behind Our Mission’!
It’s high-time we take the limiting blinders off. It’s time to get back to our basics, recognizing that we are physical beings and the first step to reclaiming our personal (and professional) powHER is by allowing fitness to fully and completely fulfil its role in our lives. It’s powHERful, and it’s a Gamechanger. I would love to hear about your experience on this journey. You can follow PowHERhouse on Facebook or me persoanlly via Twitter, YouTube or Linkedin.

My Favourite Vitamin Cures
For Gorgeous Summer Skin

In my work as a nutritionist specializing in vitamin cures, I often talk to people who are unhappy with their skin. Adult acne, extremely dry skin, a dull complexion, itchy and flaky skin, premature signs of aging, saggy skin, puffy eyes – there are so many ways our skin can give us a hard time. But the good news is that it doesn’t have to be like that! And the even better news: getting beautiful skin and a radiant complexion isn’t that hard or expensive! If you really want skin to die for, all you need is to provide your body with an abundance of natural nutrients used both internally and externally, and you’ll get flawless skin, a glowing complexion, as well as firm facial contours in return. Here are five of my favorite vitamin cures for gorgeous summer skin:
Protective Summer Oil Blend Of course you know that UV radiation causes lines and wrinkles. Do you apply sunscreen under your makeup every single day, though? Probably not. But why not simply mix 8 parts sesame oil with 1 part carrot and raspberry seed oil each in a little brown bottle, and use this blend as a moisturizer before you My Favourite Vitamin Cures For Gorgeous Summer Skin •

reach for your makeup and powder? This oil blend may not be able to protect your face for an entire day, but it’s perfect for when you’re on your way to the office, or when you take a short walk outside during your lunch break.
Anti-Aging and Anti-Acne Face Mask I love berries! Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries – you name it, I’ll have it. In fact, several handfuls of berries a day provide you with tons of antioxidants, which are crucial to feel and look younger. But don’t you hate it when berries get mushy? Good news! Simply blend them with a little bit of fresh cream or Greek yogurt, a tablespoon of honey and some ground oatmeal until you get a nice, thick paste. This face pack provides astringent and anti-inflammatory agents to fight acne, removes dead skin cells thanks to the salicylic acid contained in the berries, and the vitamin C will plump up your skin and give it a nice glow!
Happy Feet Treatment Because we hide our feet in thick socks and boots in the winter, many people forget to take proper care of them. As soon as the flip flop season begins, however, they realize 96 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
they need a cure for dry and callous skin, and they need it fast! Does this sound familiar? No reason to panic. Use my Happy Feet Treatment once per day for a couple of days in a row and your feet will be nice and smooth again: Puree 1 apple, 2 tbsp. warm honey and 1 tsp. sour cream until smooth. Apply the mask to your feet and wrap them in a towel. Put your feet up and relax for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water, dry your feet and apply some coconut oil. The ingredients in this foot mask promote new skin growth and are incredibly hydrating. This recipe yields more than one mask. Share it with a friend or your partner or store leftovers in the fridge.
Melon Slices for Puffy Eyes If it’s really hot outside I sometimes just can’t sleep. This might be OK for one night, but a couple of nights in a row take their toll: puffy eyes. Luckily, I always have watermelon in my fridge, and the dry part that forms on the top of the exposed watermelon heart (you can never eat an entire watermelon at once!) is exactly My Favourite Vitamin Cures For Gorgeous Summer Skin •

what you need when suffering from a lack of sleep. Cut it into super thin slices and put them on your face. Wait for a couple of minutes and your puffy eyes will be gone! (If you don’t like watermelon, used chamomile tea bags have the same effect if you freeze them lightly.)
After-Sun Tomato Wrap Although I always make sure that my skin never burns, it can sometimes feel a little taut after spending a lot of time outside. My vitamin cure? A tomato pack! Mix 4 Tbsp. tomato paste with the contents of 4 vitamin E capsules and 4 drops peppermint oil. Vitamin E accelerates healing of skin, peppermint oil has a cooling effect, and the lycopene contained in tomatoes not only protects against the risk of skin cancer, it also gives you a slightly tanned and glowing complexion! Of course, you can’t solve all your skin issues overnight. However, when I started using vitamin cures both internally and externally, I noticed incredible changes within a very short time, and my clients do, too.
Simply give it a try and you’ll be blown away by the healing power of vitamin cures. 98 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

You Are a Creator of your life thought by thought, feeling by feeling and moment by moment. There may be parts of you that feel uncomfortable with this and want to challenge the very idea. This is normal and is usually a part of you that is stuck, and is creating resistance. If you find this happening, and you start to get some internal chatter about this concept not being right, pause for a moment and breathe. Tell yourself this is a thought that does not serve you and that you honor it, but you are choosing to think differently now.
Once you are in a place on your own
journey where you are ready to take responsibility for what you are creating in your life, you can make the transition and become a conscious creator. This means that you can change the way you are thinking and feeling in order to deliberately send out specific vibrations to attract specific outcomes. This takes practice and at first can feel fake, but there is truth in the old saying ‘fake it until you make it’.
Affirmations can be really useful and
can help to program your mind to shift your perception and your vibration, you will have seen that I have written some for each lesson to get you started. The work of Louise Hay highlighted their importance in her truly amazing and timeless book You Can Heal Your Life. Affirmations are statements you can say out loud or silently in your own mind that affirm an idea or concept, and as such start to move your attraction field to be more in alignment with what you want to create. Affirmations must be positive and in the present tense, remember You Attract What You Are, so you Universal Magic: You Are a Creator •

need to trigger the feeling and therefore the vibration in the current now time in order to create what you want and draw it in.
When you find yourself in a holding pattern
in your life where circumstances keep repeating, or a situation that you want to change, firstly take a step back from your own mind and examine your thinking. Write down the phrases and words that you would generally use about this and have a look at how you are drawing in more like for like energy. For example, if you are a person that says or thinks “I am always tired” then there is little likelihood that you will be attracting more energy any day soon. Likewise “I’ve never got any money” or “He doesn’t understand me” would create similarly unhelpful energetic patterns for you in your life in relation to finances and relationships.
Once you have found the phrases and thinking patterns that are keeping you stuck, write them down. Now join up the dots between what you have been thinking and what you have been getting, and it should be obvious, if you have been honest, why you have been stuck or missing out on what you want. 102 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
You should clearly see the link between your thoughts and what you are drawing in, and if you don’t at this stage, then start to use some affirmations about having clarity and being able to easily see what you need to in order to make progress. After a day or two of affirming this you will find that you can return to this exercise with a different perspective.
Next take a moment to think about what
it is you do want to experience. Let this run through your mind as a conscious experience and start to think of some powerful, positive and present tense affirmations to support this. Write them as if this is happening right now, not in the future. Use empowering and inspiring language that makes you feel good. Don’t allow your ego to start butting in and say that you can’t have what you are asking for, and don’t worry about how it’s going to happen either. Create your affirmations and start using them in order to start drawing in the change you want. Visualization really helps when you are saying affirmations, it makes it easier to get into alignment energetically. If you are a person that struggles with this consider making a vision board or a vision book. Look for pictures and representations of what it is that you want to create and start to collate a mosaic of all of the things you desire. This can of course be a work in progress, and as you change your desire you can change the content.
Look at this regularly and affirm at the same time.
Some affirmation examples could be:
nce “I am blessed with an abunda ss.” e in p p a h d n a lth a e w , lth a e h f o
“I love myself unconditionally and my life reflects this back to me.” to “Money and opportunity flow me easily at all times, I always have more than I need.” “My life is full of strong and he althy relationships.”
“My body is strong and healthy.”
Although you are now on a journey to live
more consciously, many people in the world today are living unconsciously and would not accept the idea that You Are a Creator. They are on a type of human autopilot, going through their routine, day in day out and not necessarily being aware of their own thoughts, feelings and vibration. They may have a tendency to be influenced by other ideas that are not their own, such as the media or other people’s

opinions, and they may take little responsibility for what is being created in their lives.
“Sometimes we need to be able to see the contrast in life in order to know what we want, and now that you know You Are a Creator this will be valuable to you.”
These are the people who blame society,
the government, their spouse, and anyone else for the way that their life is turning out, they would rarely look within themselves in order to make positive change. When living life unconsciously, it’s easy to think that someone else should save you and people with this lack of awareness can end up having quite a self-orientated outlook on life. There is often a sense of entitlement with people who are living very unconsciously and they can find it challenging to be happy for other people’s success, as they often feel that life is unfair to them so why should others have what they want. This is a pattern and a way of living that keeps you stuck and, as we know, will attract more and more of the same energy to them until they change the way they look at life. In this case their beliefs and attitude are the Old Stuff that they need to work on releasing. None of this is said in judgment, there is a difference between this and observation.
It’s important to add here that just
because you are awake and setting your intention to live Universal Magic: You Are a Creator •

consciously, you are no better than anyone else. All of us have equal opportunity to awaken and live consciously and some choose it whilst some don’t. It is not your job to go around trying to get people to see things from your point of view or to rescue them into enlightenment. This would come from a place of ego as if you were living in a way that was superior to them, and this is not the case. You may be observing characteristics in these people who are living unconsciously that are being brought to you by The Law of Reflection, showing you aspects of yourself that you still need to work on. You may even have soul contracts with someone that they will not awaken in this life time in order to be able to share lessons with you that will accelerate your own progress.
Honor everyone’s journey and do not fall
into the trap of being in judgment, we are all where we are meant to be at this time and we are all equal and doing our own version of our best. Sometimes we need to be able to see the contrast in life in order to know what we want, and now that you know You Are a Creator this will be valuable to you.
Living your life as a conscious creator and being in
your truth will provide reflections for others. This may draw to you opportunities to signpost people and talk to them about ideas you have applied to your own life, and pass on information. As long as this is done with the intention
of supporting and not fixing, the exchange will have the energy of service rather than control. You will also have to let go of the outcome and realize that we all have our own free will. You may have planted a seed that will be nurtured for a while before it starts to grow. This all depends on each individuals desire to grow and change their perception and work towards overcoming their own limitations. You Are a Creator of your own life experience, embrace this concept and draw in what you desire.
What are you choosing to cre ate in your life right now? d n se to d e e n u yo o d y c n e u q e What fr is? out to the universe to create th
What do you need to release in order to generate this frequency? “I AM consciously creating a elf ys m r fo e c n rie e xp e e lif t n e c ifi magn now.”

Impossible Chicken n’ Broccoli Pie
This is one of my favorite recipes. I love it because it’s so easy and can be changed using whatever you have available in the fridge or cupboards! When you are busy with summer fun, fall school activities, winter hurry-hurry, or spring malaise, this will fix all that. I always have Bisquick on hand and of course, C.H.E.E.S.E! If you have leftovers, but not enough to make anything substantial, then use this recipe to mix them in and wa-la, you have a great meal. Have a salad on the side along with French bread or biscuits, and fresh sweet iced tea. Trust me, my Impossible Chicken n’ Brocolli Pie will get you great raves from the kids (of course it’s also good for them and easy to clean up). Besides, it’s fun to see the dish form its own crust!

I love to hear the stories my mom and dad tell me about when they were young. Even though it was only fifty years ago it sounds like they lived in a different world. My father remembers the shiny glass bottles filled to the brim with fresh milk being placed on the porch bright and early each morning. He remembers hearing the clickity clack clickity clack as the shoes on the horses hooves met with the road as they pulled the wagon with loaves of freshly baked bread. My mom tells us about the icebox that stood in her family’s kitchen when she was a girl. There was an ice truck that would drive around asking how much ice you needed. It amazed my mom how the man made it look so easy as he expertly chopped a big piece of ice off and it would be the five pounds that her mother had asked for. You can tell as she gets that dreamy look in her eyes that she has been transported back in time as she smiles and recalls the little kids following the truck and grabbing the pieces of ice that fell off as the ice man filled the orders. Grabbing the ice chips was such a treat for the neighbourhood kids and similar to when we would hear the chiming bells of the ice cream truck come around the corner. Doing laundry was an all day job starting with washing all the clothes by hand and then running them through the wringer washer. ironed. I used to consider how hard life must have been back then and how glad I was that I didn’t have to raise my five kids when washing was done by hand. The tides have turned once again, now I am the adult and my children love to hear stories of when I was young. The horror and shock that comes across their adorable little faces is hilarious as I tell them that personal computers were not invented when I was a child. They look faint when I share the fact that I didn’t get to work on a computer until I had reached high school. I remember having one home phone and we had to sit in the kitchen when we used it because the handset was connected with a cord. There were no cell phones and no video games. The television didn’t have channels that stayed on all night; they actually had an end of daily broadcasting when they played the national anthem. My kids have new found pride and amazement at how I survived those “dark ages”. They are baffled and even feel pity for me wondering what I did with all my free time if I didn’t have all the things they play with today. Technology has exploded over the last couple of decades. These new devices, whether we want to admit it or not, have become essential in our daily life. Computers have become so common that not only does almost every family have one in the home now the ratio seems to be one 116 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
computer to every person. You can’t look anywhere without seeing someone talking on a cell phone. I remember when I was young if you saw a person talking to themselves it was a sure sign of insanity, now it is just assumed they have a Bluetooth headset.
“Back then when we took pictures we had to buy the film take the pictures and wait hour’s sometimes even days to have them developed to discover if I had blinked when the picture was taken.”
All the teenagers, and some even younger, have a cell phone and e-mail. I remember going to Florida when I was young and writing letters to my friends and using the mail system that is now fondly referred to as “snail mail”. We would have to wait weeks to hear a reply. Back then when we took pictures we had to buy the film take the pictures and wait hour’s sometimes even days to have them developed to discover if I had blinked when the picture was taken. Just as I could not imagine growing up without a TV my children cannot fathom life without their mechanical luxuries. I used to threaten my son with changing the baby’s poopy diapers as punishment if he got in trouble but surprisingly grounding him from the computer was a Technology and Children •

hundred times more effective.
On the rare occasion that my daughter misplaces her cell phone, she will spend hours trying to locate it, exhibiting an unwavering determination unlike anything I have even seen until the phone is safely back in her possession. I have to admit these advances in communication have made certain aspects of parenting easier. The Internet is a great source of information when it comes to the kids’ school work. Sadly I have to admit I am not smarter than a Canadian seventh grader and the computer has been a lifeline for me when helping my son with his homework.
My daughter’s cell phone gives me the advantage of contacting her at any time no matter where she is. Anyone with a teenage daughter knows the pricelessness of this ability. These devices can also be helpful in situations that originally were not thought of. One day, when we were having a large gathering at our home, I heard the phone ring over all the talking and laughing. When I answered it 118 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
I was surprised to hear my daughters voice on the other end, only because moments ago she had been beside me in the kitchen. I asked her where she was and she calmly asked me if I could please throw another roll of toilet paper into the bathroom. I was tempted to enter the story into the “priceless Master Card moments commercials.
As with everything there is a positive side and a negative side when dealing with the advances of our cultures. Finding a balance of these new ways of life is the trick we need to master. As we grow and change it is important to remember how far we have come and that we are where we are because of those that paved the way.
