From the Editor
Every professional life coach will tell you not to wait for perfection – simply get stuck in and let your message evolve. The last several years, you have witnessed my own personal evolution. You’ve seen me go from seeker to cheerleader for those who want to change their lives through a mix of learning, inspired storytelling and behavioural modification. What you may not have seen, in the background, is the redefinition of my sense of identity, self-worth, a commitment to physical transformation and above all else, a deep change in my heart and spiritual beliefs. 8
• Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
I am in the process of reimagining Hat Trick. This publication has always been an extension of our coaching practice and a byproduct of my own growth and learning. At Hat Trick, no matter where you are starting from or your history, we believe that you can change your life. It’s time to give it new structure as we transition to a more openly spiritual and heart-centred brand. So for 2016, I want to encourage you to really think about the things that no longer serve you. Whether this is an old standby product, colours in your home, people in your life, or even old feelings and attachments that are just simply ready to release. No matter how much you’ve committed in the way of that image, décor, branding, or maybe even some kind of unilateral way of thinking, if it isn’t a representation of your highest self, it’s time to let it go. So many times, we get really invested in these things and caught up in a past representation that frankly isn’t who we are anymore. Be bold! Step into the person and the energy you have grown into now. Don’t wait for the end state – just evolve as you go and make your focus all about honouring yourself exactly as you are, right now.

alance. Academic, language and cultural advocate, mother, sister, friend, aunt and even grandmother and wife, Laura Grizzlypaws has gained education and cultural knowledge, broadening her understanding of the significance in maintaining personal wellness based on the notion of wholeness and inter-connectedness, celebrating the fundamental Indigenous concept of balance. Now she travels, teaches, dances, sings and shares with others.
Describe your Mission. I am on a mission to advocate powHERfully for the cultural survival of distinct identities by honouring self-determination, empowering individuals through political leadership, and demonstrating resilience as a woman. 12 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
Why do you do what you do? I honour my own self-determination through cultural traditions, education, politics, and leadership and my own personal health and wellness. Breaking the stress of oppression means living through our values, beliefs and philosophies. Culture is not in the past. It is now. It is not stagnant. It is alive. It is not in a museum. It is vibrant, full of stories, experiences and knowledge systems. My mission is to advocate for the rights of Indigenous peoples in their self-determining expressions for cultural and even political survival: It is my hope that people will demonstrate an understanding, awareness and appreciation of Indigenous relationships with both land and natural resources; and, that awareness and appreciation for Indigenous cultures and values will grow. Individuals will have the opportunity to understand cultural practices of a unique Indigenous culture, participate in cultural practices, understand the significant value of Indigenous languages, understand Indigenous people’s relationship with nature, and also then have the ability to reflect on themselves and their relationship with the world and each other. Laura Grizzlypaws •
13
Cultural survival is a shared vision of my people, my family and my community. It is about empowering, living, feeling, breathing and bringing it to life. Cultural survival for all of us should be a vision of a future where we – as a people – live through our inherent rights, deeply woven into the landscapes of our territory through our language, song, dance, art, oral traditions and spirituality. We must uplift, empower and encourage one another to walk in balance in this world in which we live, balancing ancestral ways in a modern world that we have been conformed to.
What is your ultimate dream for your Mission and where you would like to take it? 14 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
My ultimate dream is honouring our ancestors. Grizzly Bears, according to our creation stories, taught women how to give birth, how to raise their young, and how to live in harmony with the natural ecology. The St’át’imc way of life is inseparably connected to the land. The lessons of living on the land are a large part of the inheritance passed on from countless generations. The Grizzlies were selected as an appropriate species to protect the web of life in the St’át’imc Territory because they require large areas to meet their needs. If we look after our Grizzlies, everything else will be looked after; therefore, taking care of the Grizzly is like taking care of our ancestral footprints. It means protecting cultures, heritage and ecology of the land. As I dance, it is an expression of the creative metaphorical relationship of the spirit of the bear and the art of walking in two worlds, balancing the physical with the spiritual. “I walk where the Grizzly Bear dances. I feel his pleasure, excitement and freedom on the earth and in the wind that carries his ancient messages from the past. I dance where the Grizzly Bear danced. His steps united with mine, and he leaves his ancestral footprint on the land like a cellular memory in my blood. His face is a shadow that calls to me. The Grizzly, he sings his songs as we unite under his skin. I hear his prayer. I feel his pain. I am his anger. I am his hope. I am his faith. He dances upon the earth, only where I leave my ancestral footprints.” My vision is to ‘Dance around the world’! I pride myself in the role that I carry, and I dance for the Grizzly Bear in honour of my ancestry and the natural ecology. I dance for the children, and for my Xwísten Bear Clan community. I also dance for you and the ones in need, that we (Grizz and I) may share enlightenment, joy and healing with you. I celebrate the joy of culture and travel the world to instil the hope of cultural survival for present and future generations. Laura Grizzlypaws •

Describe 'Success' It is time to move forward within an ethical space and with a common understanding of urgency. Accelerated efforts are required as is shared responsibility of all people through engagement; the Indigenous and non-Indigenous placing accountability onto individuals, families, communities and organisations through gained knowledge and a cultural experience that are equitable by all members of society.
What is your biggest career highlight thus far? The biggest highlight of Grizz is rooted in community engagement. Realising the positive impact we are having in communities as they are culturally responsive and uplifted through our oral traditions, real life stories, health and wellness examples and interactive dance. We are witnessing a willingness of individuals to commit to improving their personal wellness and cultural standards and to revitalise their own ancient understandings and the traditional practices of their origin. Greatest joy in our work?
ww
Our (Grizz and I) ability to: Promote the development of knowledge and competencies that enables individuals to adapt the knowledge base of their own social and cultural practices;
ww
Teach and transfer knowledge through all forms of learning, including formal learning, non-formal learning and intergenerational learning;
ww
Travel the world and meet new people from all walks of life and experiences;
ww
Create awareness and understanding that cultures are diverse and distinct, each with its own uniqueness; and,
ww
Share common understanding of the challenges and obstacles encountered as we revitalise and restore Indigenous values.

Name one thing that you feel has been most pivotal or useful thus far in your work? Critique and feedback from community individuals. This has been most pivotal in my development as a cultural advocate, storyteller, singer, songwriter, even as a mother and educator. People who are kind enough to provide feedback and share their stories in return. The more I present and engage with community, the more I improve with confidence and courage. It doesn’t matter what your work is, outside influence can and will help you to hone it. The more I share my work, the more it grows powHERfully, both personally and professionally.

So you’ve been thinking it over for a few months and finally decided to hire a business coach. A coach can help you rediscover your spark and transform your business right before your eyes. You will be challenged to try new things and you’ll have someone to bounce your ideas off and discuss challenges. But how do you know who to choose as a business coach? This is your lucky day because I’m going to give you a heads up on exactly how to go about finding the best business coach or mentor for your needs. My top 5 tips will head you in the right direction: Know what you want to achieve. An excellent coach can help you become clear on your goals and get you moving in the right direction, but you need to have a good idea where you’re hoping to go in your business. Put pen to paper and think this out ahead of time. Be completely honest. Before you even start narrowing down to a specific coach, make up your mind that you will be totally honest and straight-up with whoever ends up being your coach. This is critical even in the initial interview. A good coach will ask some direct questions Boost Your Success With a Biz Coach •

“A good coach will ask some direct questions about you and your business ideas” about you and your business ideas. A coach can only help you if you are one hundred percent up-front with all your answers. Prepare yourself for discomfort. A good coach is going to move you from your comfort zone to a zone where you will be able to face your fears. You’ll start to realise that some discomfort can mean you’re moving ahead in a positive way. I can tell you from experience that moving forward in business means you’ll need to hit the terror barrier at full speed and be determined to make it through. It is absolutely necessary to realise up-front that a good business coach is going to challenge you, kick your butt, and also help you deal with your fear. Check credentials. Ask for references and experience. The best coach will mentor you based on their own successful experience in business, so ask them about their past business successes. You’ll want a coach who has coaching 24 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
experience, excellent training and a terrific coaching track record. A great coach will generally earn six figures a year or more from coaching. Ask if their earnings level is in the six figure ballpark. Be prepared to pay. An excellent coach will set you back some serious cash. Like anything, excellence does cost money. The better, more experienced coaches will help you raise your income level substantially, so don’t cheap out when you’re searching for a top notch coach.
So get moving. Ask your friends who they recommend as a coach. Go to networking events and meet coaches face to face. Inquire through your local Chamber of Commerce. Remember that your coach will not need to be in your geographical area. Most coaches make use of the many communication tools available including one or more of the following: skype, facetime, telephone, teleconferences and texting.
Once you start seriously searching for the right coach to fit your needs, you’ll be surprised how many possibilities start appearing on the horizon. Before long you will find a coach who is perfect for you and your business. In a year or two, you’ll be advising other entrepreneurs on how to find a business coach based on your own successful experience.

CLARITY IS KING This may be the missing piece to making more money and having more fun in your business! FIND ME ONLINE HERE
By Uchechi Ezurike-Bosse 26 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
You
often hear that clarity is king when it comes to growing and building your business; and I couldn’t agree more. If you want to make more money and attract ideal customers, then you need to be clear on who they are.
If you’ve taken any marketing programs, then you would’ve come across the concept of Ideal Customer Avatar (ICA). The work of getting ‘inside the skin’ of your ICA is one many business owners find difficult to do. However, getting to know them at this level allows you to really hone in on those you want to work with. Customer clarity helps you attract those who need and value your products and services the most. They are also more fun to work with. When you start to market your business without this clarity, you often attract people who are not the best fit for your business. Business is hard enough without you working with the wrong people. Another important part of knowing your ICA is that it helps you better market your business and communicate to them in a way they understand. Get to know what issues and concerns your ideal customers have, and how your business solves them. What need do they have, that you’re able to fill? Understanding your customers is key to growing them, because you are then able to tailor your products and services to solve their needs. A major mistake many business owners make is not using the same language their customers use to describe their concerns. The ‘language’ is the words your customers use to describe their wants, needs and desires? These are the same words Clarity is King •
27
“Build up your ‘know, like and trust factor’ and strengthen your relationship with them. It is through this connection that you are able to form lasting relationships.” you should be using in your marketing materials. Often times as business owners, we tend to speak as if we’re speaking to our colleagues, and our customers may not get it. You need to use the same words they use to describe the problems and solutions they’re looking for. This allows your ideal customers to understand the value of what you have to offer. An example I gave at a recent workshop on this topic was a personal trainer who used the word “functional exercises” in her marketing material. When I asked what this was, I was told, ‘it’s exercises that maximizes your time so your burn more calories in less time.’ I then said, use that in your copy! Instead of saying ‘functional exercise’ (which the majority of her target customers will not know the meaning of), she should have said something like; ‘burn more calories in half the time!’ 28 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
When getting clear on your ICA, you really need to dig deep and understand what is happening in their world. What are the biggest frustrations they’re looking for solutions to? Overall, it’s important to answer the following questions:
1
2 3
Who is my customer?
What does my customer need? How can I serve them?
You also need to find out where your ideal customers are. What websites do they frequently visit? What blogs do they read? What groups do they belong to on Facebook? When you have this information, you can then go where they are and offer valuable resources to them (i.e. guest blog, joining the Facebook group and contributing etc). Build up your ‘know, like and trust factor’ and strengthen your relationship with them’. It is through this connection that you are able to form lasting relationships. This relationship will lead them to know you’re the obvious choice for them. When you’re able to master this, you’ll be well on your way to making more money and having more fun in your business.

SELF CARE, RESILIENCE INDULGENCE FIND ME ONLINE HERE
By Sukh Pabial 34 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
It can seem like a real indulgence these days to talk about self-care. There’s far too much happening in global situations that are impacting us in various ways. And for many thousands of people, there are daily struggles that are being fought and battled. What place, then, does talk of self-care have amongst all this? You’re all smart people. The below is nothing revelatory. It’s a hard question in truth. But when you start to break down what we’re all up against, you start to see that a new way, or indeed an evolved way, of being is much needed. We’re all much busier these days. Gone are the days of January being a lazy start for the beginning of the year. These days, from the 2nd January, it’s all systems go. There is too much to do, too many places to see, too many things to experience. Bucket lists are a regular thing these days because of the ease of access we have to everything. The exponential growth in the development of technology over the last 100 years has seen us develop skills, thinking and businesses in ways we couldn’t have conceived. Self Care, Resilience & Indulgence •
35
Modern medicine means we are all living longer. The life expectancy for developing countries has improved because of modern medicine, so this isn’t a ‘first world’ fact, it’s a global fact. Education and access to education has improved dramatically. This doesn’t necessarily mean we’re all getting smarter, but it does mean we’re all developing those higher thinking capabilities on a much more even keel now. Modern science means we are developing theories and carrying out experiments that push the very limits of current human knowledge. Our cognitive thinking abilities are seriously advanced. We are able to debate and progress thinking to such levels that we’d need an interpreter into clear English (or language of choice) for the most serious of debates. Our physical bodies are capable of being developed into such physical conditions that the elite of the bunch can perform physical tasks that leave us in awe.
If we design learning well, and design thinking time and dialogue into the session, is that the art of good learning design? 36 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
Modern communication methods mean people are in such ease of contact that it’s almost a human right. It’s a big old world, and we’ve got all that either going for us, or going against us. So, taking the time to genuinely care for yourself, is a necessity these days. It’s hard to do. It’s hard to build in time for yourself where you carry out activities that are generative, positive and progressive. When we don’t, though, we know that our resilience is weakened. Finding the energy and motivation to push forward when things are placed in your way isn’t easy. We don’t tend to provide this focus for the people we work with. It tends to be a ‘get on with it’ attitude. Which is fine for some, but it can’t continue that way. We’re under too much pressure, all of us, to just hope people will be ok. Building that resilience, building that tenacity, building that emotional intelligence, building that empathy, are all important things to do. When we skip over those, for the interests of the business, or for self-interests, is when we reduce our ability to be better.
There shouldn’t be anything I’ve written above that you all won’t know about. Hopefully it reinforces some things you already knew. Self Care, Resilience & Indulgence •

The Price of Following Jesus
M
y heart is just so heavy today. While Christians around the world are being killed and persecuted, I am sitting in a home filled with books about Jesus and I have never had to pay a cost for loving Him. He only had to pay a cost for loving me. Following Him has cost me absolutely nothing. God wouldn’t let me sleep any longer today. I needed time with Him. I have needed His Word and time to cry to Him and time just to be still and listen.

By Katie Clifton, Christian Columnist 40 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
I couldn’t sleep much last night. My mind kept imagining people screaming as they were dragged away from their families. I saw blood. I saw fear and evil. My heart feels like it was flipped last night and I can’t seem to stop crying. Dreaming of evil is terrifying. I imagine starring at it face to face is an emotion I am unable to grasp. There is a price for following Jesus, but I have never had to pay it. Following Jesus clearly does not guarantee us an easy life. Believing His gospel doesn’t mean we also believe that everything in this life will be ok. But believing His gospel does mean that Jesus Christ is enough for us, even when we are scared and this world doesn’t make sense.
Jesus, won’t you come quickly?
Each one of the apostles paid a price for following Jesus. At least eight of them were martyred. Some were stoned, crucified, and beheaded. The persecution happening now to the bride of Christ, has always happened. Jesus said He was “sending (us) out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves.” He said, “Beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in synagogues. You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me. When you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the The Price of Following Jesus •

For it is not you who will be speaking - it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” (Matthew 1016-20) Jesus warned His disciples and He prepared them for persecution. His church is being persecuted now and I am terrified of raising a generation of believers who aren’t ready to die for their Saviour.
Are we a generation of believers who is willing to die for their Saviour? I don’t want to ever water down who Jesus is or the price it costs to follow Him. Now, it has cost me nothing. But there will be a time, where it could cost you and I everything.
Jesus, you are enough for us. 42 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
Jesus goes on to warn us by saying, “But don’t be afraid of those who threaten you. For the time is coming when everything that is covered will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all. Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in Hell. Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven. If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine. If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.” (Matthew 10:26, 28, 32, 38)
We have brothers and sisters in corners of this world, right now, who are facing persecution. My heart is so broken for them. I admit, I am scared. I am scared of evil. I know who overcomes it, and yet it makes me ache and feel sick deep in my stomach.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 6:6-7) “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.” (Ephesians 6:18)

Father God, You are good. In this broken mess of humanity, I know you are on your throne and you are allowing this to happen to fulfil the plans you have for your Sons second coming. Please, Lord, send Him soon. Lord, I know you see your children persecuted, beaten, beheaded and slaughtered because they belong to you. You said, You bless those who are poor and realise their need for you. You said you bless those who mourn, and they will be comforted. You bless those who are humble and give them the whole earth as inheritance. You bless those who hunger and thirst for justice. You said they will be satisfied. God, we are hungry for Your justice. Lord, you said you bless those who are merciful and they will be shown mercy. You said those with pure hearts will see you. You bless those who work for peace and You call us your children. You bless those who are persecuted for doing right and You said the Kingdom of Heaven is ours. You said great reward awaits us in heaven who endure this. Lord, reward your children as you welcome them into heaven. I am begging You, Father, to bind up this evil. Heal this fallen world. Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven. I am broken and pouring out my tears for my brothers and sisters who are pouring out their blood. Lord, please deliver them from evil. Deliver this world, quickly. And Lord, don’t let us grow weary in the waiting. You are a good Father. You are holy and divine and it is so tough for us to make sense of your plans. But we trust you. We love you.

THE SCIENCE OF How Food and Sleep Affect Your Skin and Health
FIND ME ONLINE HERE
By Rachael Pontillo 50 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
Whenever I’m asked for general recommendations on how to improve one’s skin and overall health, the first two always consist of improving one’s quality of food and sleep. Sometimes that disappoints people since they’d rather have some juicy miracle skincare ingredient or fast-acting cleanse–but what I learned in my own journey back to wellness and clear skin is that if food and sleep are lacking in quantity or quality, then little else you try will work for the long run. I’ve talked about this in many of my blog posts and videos, but I haven’t really delved into the science of how food and sleep affect our bodies. I know many people love learning the science and mechanics behind this stuff–and you should! It’s fascinating, and I think it’s also a reminder of what a perfectly designed and complex system the human body is. When we appreciate that, it helps us see the miracle that is us–human beings. To help shed light on how cool this stuff is, I decided to share a two-part series written by guest writer Hayley Irvin. Today’s is about sleep, and next week’s is about food. Enjoy!
WHY DO WE NEED SLEEP? The answer to this seemingly simple question has evaded scientists for many years. We know sleep is important, but the exact reason why is unclear. Although sleep is common throughout the animal kingdom, only mammals and birds experience changes The Science of How Food & Sleep Affect Your Skin & Health •

in brain waves during REM and non-REM sleep. Mammals tend to have longer cycles of REM sleep, usually lasting multiple hours, whereas REM cycles in birds last for only a few seconds at a time. This indicates that sleep may have its origins in our evolutionary history, a biological safeguard to protect against predators while simultaneously conserving energy, regenerating cells, and encouraging brain and muscle growth.
THERE ARE THREE MAIN SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT AS TO WHY HUMANS REQUIRE SO MUCH SLEEP. These are not mutually exclusive; indeed, our need for sleep may be the result of many factors.
1
Energy conservation theories suggest that sleep evolved in order for predators to conserve their energy during times when it was least efficient to hunt. Physiological evidence lends some credence to this theory – humans experience a decrease in body temperature, caloric demand and metabolic rate during sleep.
2
Restorative theories propose that sleep developed as a way to restore and rejuvenate what our bodies lose throughout the day. Furthermore, research has shown that immune health is closely related to sleep. Lab rats that were completely deprived of sleep experienced immune system failure in a matter of weeks. More recent

The next closest thing that has a similar effect is restorative yoga as studies showed it can help stress and the body and have similar healing effects like sleep – but clearly cannot replace it.

Brain plasticity theories posit that sleep is a vital component of neurological function. Recent research has indicated that sleep is crucial to brain development in infants, who often spend 7-8 hours per day in REM sleep. It is also helps maintain brain plasticity in adults as we age.
Sleep is critical to our mental and physical wellbeing. Anyone with a baby, a college degree or a full-time job can tell you that. Unfortunately, though most people know the value of a good night’s rest since sleep is often one of the first things we cut down on

when life gets busy. Indeed, it is estimated that more than 40% of all Americans do not get enough sleep. One night of poor sleep may not have many noticeable short or long-term consequences beyond irritability and fatigue the next day, but it’s important not to let it become a habit. Studies have shown that people who receive less than 6 hours of sleep each night are at an increased risk for car accidents, on-the-job injuries, depression, and many serious medical conditions.
HERE ARE FIVE WAYS SLEEP CAN AFFECT YOUR MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH: Sleepiness impairs cognitive function. Neurological research has shown an important connection between sleep and certain cognitive processes, including memory, reaction time and awareness. Scientists have learned that sharp wave ripples occur almost exclusively during our deepest sleep and are responsible for converting shortterm memories into long-term memories.
1
Fatigue can also affect our awareness and ability to make good decisions, too. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, driver fatigue is a contributing factor in more than 100,000 car accidents in the U.S. every year. Tiredness also affects worker productivity and leads to on-the-job accidents and injuries. 54 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
2
Lack of sleep contributes to depression. Though much is still unknown about the complex relationship between sleep and mental health, research has shown that the prevalence of sleep disorders often coincides with depression. According to a recent study, people with sleep apnea are five times more likely to develop symptoms of depression than those who receive adequate sleep. Worse still, insomniacs are nearly ten times more likely to develop depression than their well-rested peers. Inadequate sleep can lead to weight gain and many more serious health problems. Studies have shown that sleep is just as important to our physical wellbeing as it is to our mental. Indeed, sleep loss has been shown to stimulate our appetite and increase hunger – especially for foods loaded with fats and carbohydrates.
3
Furthermore, an increase in the consumption of fatty, carb-heavy foods may explain why sleep-deprived individuals are also at an increased risk for other more serious medical conditions including stroke, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure. Sleep loss decreases libido. According to researchers at the Stanford University Sleep Medicine Center, the double-whammy of low energy and high tension that occurs when we’re tired often results in a reduced sex drive in both men and women. Over time, this can lead to long-term sexual dysfunction. Additionally, men with sleep apnea produce less testosterone during sleep and often experience a decrease in libido and a reduced interest in sexual activity.

Poor sleep ages your skin. If poor physical and mental health and less sex don’t motivate you to get more sleep, perhaps vanity will. Research conducted at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, has shown a definitive connection between sleep and skin aging.
In short, because the skin of sleep-deprived individuals is less able to recover from environmental factors, people who do not receive enough sleep usually look older than people who receive plenty of rest. In addition to having more fine lines and wrinkles, sleepdeprived individuals also experience reduced skin elasticity and an uneven complexion. Without this recovery time, people with inflammatory skin conditions like acne or rosacea are also affected. Without adequate sleep, the skin’s immune function and wound healing process don’t work as efficiently.
It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the real world and let your sleep suffer. Many people boast about their ability to function on almost no sleep, but this pride is misguided. It’s like bragging about saving money by eating off of the McDonald’s value menu for lunch every day. It’s not impressive and ultimately, you’re really only hurting yourself. If you’ve been feeling sluggish or sad lately, try getting more sleep.
You won’t regret it! 56 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

“There is always someone worse off ” is something we tend to say when things are not going well for us, and it’s true on many levels. FIND ME ONLINE HERE

he world is full of people that are struggling financially, with health problems, with family issues, addictions and relationships. People that have terminal illnesses and people that are homeless, people that feel suicidal or are fleeing countries that are dangerous and hostile – literally risking their lives to try to find safety to raise their children. Thankfully most of us can look around and see these struggles, feel compassion and empathy and help if we can, with a prayer, a financial donation or act of goodwill. Seeing the struggle of our fellow humans makes us grateful, and let’s be totally honest, we're usually grateful that it’s not us.
WHEN YOU ARE AN EMPATH, A SENSITIVE PERSON OR ON A SPIRITUAL PATH YOU SOMETIMES OBSERVE THINGS DIFFERENTLY. We talk about law of attraction and how we attract in things and experiences that are in vibrational alignment with us, and I get that. It’s what I teach and I have seen it in action in my life many times.
Your Stuff is Big Stuff •

ut it’s when I look at the real struggles, that my faith is rocked. If I am really honest with you I don’t know how I feel about God and Law of Attraction when I see people in such strife, real life and death situations where it’s a matter of survival and personal safety. I know on a conscious level that no one would ever deliberately draw in this experience. No one wants an illness, or a situation that will put themselves or their children in hardship and danger – but this creates a real intellectual dilemma for me. I know that energy is magnetic and I know it finds a match, and I also know that I have had stuff show up in my life that I have drawn in but would not have chosen to in a million years.
SO WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? I know that we all agree to life lessons before we incarnate, and that these lessons help us to grow and evolve and my hardest lessons have been my greatest blessings. Maybe it’s because I have not been through something as bad as the things I see around me, that I feel that I have in some way dodged a cosmic bullet or managed to create some kind of karmic get-out clause with the universe. I do know that when I speak to people about my life that they are surprised that I have been through so much big stuff at only 39 years old, and that I have done well in healing my wounds (I'm still 74 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
All I know is that everyone’s 'stuff ' is 'big stuff ' to them, and we all have a different perception of this. working on this) and coming out of the other side of some horrible experiences. Maybe the view from the other side makes it easier to look back and think that what you went through was not all that bad? All I know is that everyone’s 'stuff' is 'big stuff' to them, and we all have a different perception of this – depending on what we have experienced in our lives and how conscious we are. To some people an unexpected bill for a few hundred pounds would be a real disaster, for others it would be a breast lump, yet for some the breast lump would be a blip. It depends on how you see things and what you tell yourself.
BE KIND TO YOURSELF WHEN YOU ARE GOING THROUGH BIG STUFF, BUT TRY TO RETAIN SOME PERSPECTIVE.

here are always going to be people that are worse off than you, but your stuff is important to you – and it’s OK to focus on that and have compassion and empathy for others at the same time. You can paddle your own canoe to the shore, and from there you can maybe throw out the odd rope to help others or light a fire to guide them in.
Also know that what you would take in your stride might be massive for someone else. Be kind. We are all fighting our own battle.

Are Your Pants

By Cherie DeBurger 82 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
"Don't eat the watermelon rind because it's poisonous!" As parents we are supposed to set good examples for our children. We are the ones who are expected to teach the kids between right and wrong and show them the way to be a productive member of society. This isn't always as easy as it sounds and that's why there is now a world-wide saying "Do as I say, not as I do." We all try our best but there are times when the difference between keeping your sanity and going rubber-lipped crazy is a little white lie. I remember some of the fibs my parents told me when I was young, some things so outrageous I look back now and laugh because they were things that only a child would believe. All this in an effort to deter my siblings and I from doing certain things. I wonder how many children panicked after accidentally swallowing an apple seed? Each one of them knowing full well it was only a matter of time before branches started growing out of their ears. "Don't eat the watermelon rind because it's poisonous!" this was another one I was told. I was always very careful not to bite into the green of the rind when I had some of that sweet summertime treat. Why Are Your Pants on Fire? •

Little did I know fibbing to my children was not a luxury, it was a survival strategy. on earth was I so gullible? My mother would come flying out of no where if I came within ten feet of something dangerous, why on earth would I think she would intentionally hand me something to eat that could possibly make me sick? I can't count the number of times my mother stopped me from doing something just in the nick of time. I remember getting ready to draw on my brothers face when he was a baby. Mum was busy in the kitchen and I, being the sweet little innocent angel that I was, continued to colour. Just as I was getting ready to add my artistic flare to his forehead I heard my mother say, "Don't you dare." I quickly looked up and she wasn't even looking at me, how did she know?! It was a mystery until she finally told me about the extra pair of eyes in the back of her head. a rule that you can’t tell is being broken. Luckily for my mum and dad, they found some special dye to put in the pool that would immediately turn bright red if it were mixed with pee, or so that was the way that story went. Then I grew up and had children of my own. I wanted to be honest with my kids, I wanted to have that bond of trust. Little did I know fibbing to my children was not a luxury, it was a survival strategy. It took no time at all for me to fall into the Fabulous Fibbing Club.
My sister, who had no children used her fibbing power on my kids and put her own twist on the red dye story; she told my kids if they pee'd in her hot tub they would get electrocuted. I didn’t realise they really believed it until I heard one of my sons tell his friend the same thing in our hot tub. As the day wears on so do I and there is more of a chance for fibbing. Before the kids could tell the time it was like I had a time machine. On the days when they really put me through the wringer I would call out "Okay time for bed!" and the kids would whine about it still being light outside. As they got better at telling time I would change the clocks and then put them back to the right time after they were sleeping. I don't now how many times after tucking the kids in I would lovingly look at them and say "I'll be back up to check on you" and get busy with something else, totally forgetting to go back up. Every child seems to get at least one really annoying toy. Sometimes we unknowingly buy it or it is given as a present (usually from the funny Aunt who gets to go home). When the batteries finally run out I have been guilty of telling them that certain toy has special batteries and you can't buy them at the store. What about those days when you can't stand to hear that talking toy one more time? The children are off doing something else and in that split second you grab the toy and throw it on a high shelf carefully checking to see if any of the kids are coming. Later when they are trying to find it I will move a couple of pillows, check in a few toy boxes and be just as baffled as everyone else about where the toy went. Are Your Pants on Fire? •

One day the kids were playing in the back yard, I was sitting at the kitchen table thinking about eating the leftover desert I had brought home from the restaurant the night before. I wondered if I would have time to eat it before anyone decided to come in, I was feeling lucky so I went for it. I swear those kids have some type of sonar. it was only a matter of minutes before they came running in.
I know I should share, it's the right thing to do, but just once I'd like to eat my own food. "What do you got Mum?" My mind shifts into overdrive, "Oh you guys wouldn't like this, really!" I know I should share, it's the right thing to do, but just once I'd like to eat my own food. "There is some really healthy stuff in it," I tell them hoping to discourage them. They continue on, all three of them wanting a bite. I see they're not going to give up so I play my ace and tell them there is alcohol in it so they can't have any. Disappointed they walk away and I savour every bite. Has anyone ever had a worm for a pet? We almost did but I finally convinced the kids that his family would miss him and would go out looking for hours and be very worried. How would they feel if someone took one of them for a pet, wouldn't they miss their family and want to come home? Every parent has had trouble getting their kids to leave a place when they are having a really good time. They 86 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
try everything until they are left with one last ditch effort. "If you don't get in the car right now I am leaving you here!" You know you would really never leave them, you may really want to but you won't. My kids were always insecure enough that they would come running after that threat. I'm not sure if I should be proud of that or not. That doesn't work at Nana's though, they just look at you like "Okay see ya later then. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Children bring out many emotions in parents, some good and some bad. Some feelings we didn't even know we could feel.
