From the Editor

TWO HALVES, ONE LIFE For the first time in nearly 11 years, I find myself on a plane headed not just for the United States but also a mere stone’s throw from my home state, Arkansas. If you follow my column, you’ll know this is where I spent the first 21 years of my life. It’s a place so salty that the Earth itself knows only flavour. You want to know salty? Try bluegrass mixed with southern rock and the blues. Try some of the fiercest contrasts of Bourbon, downhome, Southern hospitality and racist hatred and bigotry that one could find, the world over – each one just about as stout as the other. We are home of the Rockefellers, Bill Clinton, diamond and crystal mines, more rice than Japan, and the only state in the union where the Confederate flag is not just a racist symbol. No. By golly, it’s the 8

basis of our state flag. How can some place so beautiful be so ugly all at once? When I go wandering down memory lane, I choose to remember on the fireflies, the smell of magnolia trees, and sitting on top of my dad’s shed listening to the crack of baseball bats and applause in the distance, in 100 degree heat, drinking iced tea and carefully pulling / sucking honeysuckle until dusk fell. The truth was really far more bittersweet. Eleven years ago, this April, I sat on a plane with my two year-old and watched the lights of Illinois twinkle and fade away below me. I was leaving the States for the UK, indefinitely, having already felt I’d make it in the big city (for a small town girl). It was a poignant experience that I indulged the full flight, until we approached the Atlantic Ocean, at which point I broke down. I clearly recall my surprise. For the first time in a long while, I tasted that same salt, as it ran down my face and into the smile of insane hope and wonder. Hell, what was a kid like me doing on a plane to London anyway? I had in the not so distant past left a violent alcoholic who beat me. Whose mother, also Arkansan, complained that “in my day, we had enough pride to stick by our husbands” – oh that salty South. This memory danced in my mind for quite some time. Eight hours on a plane will do that. And then there was Katie. My sweet Katie. I could only pray I was doing what would prove best for her. Believe me, that is exactly what I did, pray that is, across the full span of the Atlantic Ocean. “God please if you can make something of my sorry life I promise you that I will never forget it, where I came from or take it for granted”. I wonder sometimes now, if I held up my part of the deal. Truth be told, I had nothing to lose then. We had nothing to lose. Kate and I. By the time we saw land, all grief faded and excitement entered. This was the beginning - for a naïve 23 year old anyway. Letter From the Editor, Michelle Fitz •

Now here I find myself, 35 years old, on the reverse journey of this trip – this time en route to Dallas but still close enough to my home turf that I am confronted with that salt again. People are calling me “ma’am” this time. I am complimented on my “transatlantic” accent and my scarf. It stops me because I recognise that am different now, in every way. For the first time I’m forced to look at myself. God, this is why I avoided the return leg. I’m reflecting on these people’s comments. Eleven years in Europe is kind of like the world’s most intensive charm school a southern girl could choose. I guess I do wear a lot of scarves these days. I mean disproportionately so. It comes with working with the French for so long. I cast my eyes down and every single thing about me is different. From my clothing to my demeanour, and I cannot help but wonder who I am, anymore. When I boarded, I had a good cringe about the guy in the Hawaiian t-shirt, the business class guys in their Dockers Khakis and the sheer volume of mid-40s gentlemen sporting the classic “dad jeans” with ‘70s porn throw back moustaches. I cringed as they spoke louder than necessary. At their Texas pendants (in gold, of course), and I resigned to the idea that this flight would be nothing more than an annoyance. I was wrong. My God, when did I become such a stuck-up snob who looked down my nose at people on a plane? Spend ten hours on a plane and you’ll find the time to do some reflecting. You’ll people watch, look for differences and if you’re resolute, you’ll soon spot the ways we are all just the same. This was a hard trip for me. I didn’t want to go. I’m due to head home to Arkansas in September. I promised my oldest friend that this year, this year I would really do it, but only in exchange for too much alcohol in Vegas thereafter to end it on a happy note. I do this after scary films as well – something funny to ease the emotional damage. I got some shit from family and friends. It is only a handful of hours’ 10 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

drive, but I just wasn’t ready. The closest I have been, by design, was Canada. They have every right to feel this way, and I own it fully. In 2000, I arrived in Chicago at the age of 21 with under $100 left over from my paycheck after purchasing a new backpack, a my Greyhound Bus ticket – an 18 hour journey which took me from downtown Little Rock to some 900 miles away, to a place I knew in my heart would be a world of “yes” for me. And it was. I used to be so embarrassed that my genetics were from a shackladen town called Malvern. That purely by virtue of my stepfather, I was plucked from poverty before I could walk and placed into one of the best-performing school districts in the state. He would take me on long walks, and stress the importance of good grades. We weren’t in poverty but I needed to get a scholarship. I used to hang my head in shame, quiet my voice on public transport and glaze over details of my humble roots. These days, I get a chuckle out of the journey I’ve walked, more often alone than not. Self-made, they call it. A survivor, if you ask those closest to me. As I sit here on this plane to Dallas, I realise that I was scared as hell to return home because I was too cowardly to face the ghosts and realities of my past, to embrace my full, now adult, identity. As I look around me, I wonder – how many more people, who just like me, are returning home – self-made, horizons expanded, anxious and excited to be taste that salt again.

Kelly Rutherford’s Custody Battle Help Kelly Get 100,000 Signatures by May 28 Here! By Michelle Fitz 12 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

KELLY

Rutherford married a wealthy playboy who has an allegedly bad reputation and is barred in the United States. He successfully painted her an unfit mother, bankrupted her with legal fees, and she ended up representing herself at The Hague as her own counsel. Going against the best lawyers in the world, facing alienation her from her children, and penalised for being a working mum whose income was project focused. As an actress, not only was she painted as unfit – people do not realise how much money he has, and the essential temporary nature of her work. We are asking readers to sign her online petition.

MOTHER OF TWO SMALL CHILDREN AND WELLKNOWN ACTRESS AND PHILANTHROPIST, KELLY RUTHERFORD, A NEW YORK RESIDENT, IS IN THE FIGHT OF HER LIFE TO RESCUE HER EXILED CHILDREN. In August of 2012, a Los Angeles judge issued a tentative decision ordering Kelly’s then-toddlers, now aged 3 and 7, to move to France and reside with their father, a German citizen, despite the father’s visa revocation for purported illegal activity. This decision became a final judgment in November, 2013. The judgment provides that the children would either a) reside in France/Monaco until the children’s father took proactive measures to successfully have his visa reissued or 2) the court found that the father was taking no proactive/good faith measures to have his visa reissued and as a result the children would be returned to New York to live with Kelly.

Despite the father’s visa revocation, despite the father’s refusal to answer questions at trial regarding said alleged illegal activity, and although the children have an American citizen mother and are American citizens themselves, the judge issued an overreaching and unconscionable decision forcing small children to move internationally, away from their primary caretaker mother, in order to facilitate a 50/50 custody timeshare due to the father’s inability to re-enter the United States at that time.

“...no court has ever before ordered American children to move to a foreign country to accommodate a non-American parent denied entry to the United States due to alleged illegal activity.” The judge, the evaluators and the children’s court-appointed attorney all found that Kelly was an exemplary mother. Notwithstanding this, the judge wrote that she believed the father’s intentions were to seek reinstatement of his visa and allowed him time to do so by uprooting two small children and ordering them out of America. Despite the father portraying himself as a victim, one evaluator concluded that the conflict in this case was created by the father and further found that the struggle and acrimony stemmed from the father. She determined that the father had no intent to become an American citizen evidenced by his refusal to provide paperwork regarding his visa application. While it is not unprecedented for an American family court judge to order children to “move away” from their primary residence 16 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

to live with a parent who resides elsewhere, no court has ever before ordered American children to move to a foreign country to accommodate a non-American parent denied entry to the United States due to alleged illegal activity. In the absence of proof that an American parent has been abusive, judges invariably allow American children to stay in their own country, as well they should. Kelly’s case is not only an aberration, it is the antithesis of what is fair and just under American law when a family court judge is asked to resolve a custody dispute involving American children of divorced parents from different countries. Notwithstanding the judge’s blatant disregard to investigate the reasons for the father’s visa revocation and how it relates to the best interest of the children, and despite the father’s refusal to answer questions about his visa status even to this day, the court did create one mechanism that could potentially bring the children home. This was an “immigration review” procedure, in which after two years, in 2014, the father was to prove what good faith efforts he had made to have his visa reinstated. If no good faith efforts had been made, the children would return to New York to live with Kelly.

In March

2014, the trial court ruled that despite the immigration review created by the court in the judgment, Kelly had no right to implement the immigration review and ask that her ex-husband prove his “good faith” efforts to obtain a new visa. The judge justified overruling and eliminating the court’s own procedure provided for in the court’s own judgment by finding that Kelly filed her papers on the issue too late, despite Kelly being forced to represent herself during this time and not fully understanding the legal process. Gossip Girl: Kelly Rutherford’s Custody Battle

17

This reckless decision by the LA judge struck down the only provision in the judgment that would bring the children home and essentially converted what was meant to be a temporary move away into a permanent de facto deportation of American citizen children. Kelly’s children are now stranded in exile, voiceless to demand that they receive the rights and liberties afforded to American citizens living in America. These young children have the right to grow up and attend school in their own country and be reunited with their loving mother in New York. The longer the children remain in France the greater the risk they continue to be alienated from American society and continue to be denied the protections afforded to all Americans. On March 18, 2014, the children’s father filed paperwork in Monaco in what Kelly believes to be an attempt to transfer jurisdiction to Monaco and further limit the children’s ability to return to America.

Kelly’s American-born children need help from American courts and the American public. They need help from the State Department and immigration officials so they can re-establish their citizenship in this country and return to their home in New York receiving the constitutional protections guaranteed to American citizens. 18 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Give your Business a Shot in the SEO Arm FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Andrea Sullenger 20 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

When was the last time you needed a service like a new nail salon, massage expert or travel agent? Clearly, if you’re like me, you headed straight for your phone or iPad and did a search. Right? If I were looking for your service or product on-line, would I find you? Take a minute and do some searches online just like you would do if you were looking for that same product or service. Make some notes about what search phrases were successful and what phrases were not. Make a list of the top ten search phrases you’d like to get found with. Let’s get one thing straight right here and now. SEO should not intimidate you. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and it’s far less complicated than people think. Don’t let it scare you. I’m here to give you a confidence boost and tell you that you can do some of your own SEO and it’s way easier than it sounds. Follow a few basic strategies and stick with them. Let’s get into action mode and start doing. Here are my five shot-inthe-arm ways to help make sure you show up in search results.

1. Write articles and blogs about your area of interest. Search engines these days are well aware of what you are publishing online. By search engines, I mean mostly Google. Every time you write an article or blog and publish it online, Google is Give your Business a Shot in the SEO Arm •

21

aware of it and essentially rates your work. Make sure your writing is original and not copied from anything else that is already online, including your own work. Write valuable content that people will learn from and appreciate. The more valuable, fresh content you publish on-line, the more chances your business will be found by Google. Remember that list you made of the top 10 search phrases? Use those ideas in your titles and opening paragraphs to boost your SEO.

2. Create a following on one or more social media choices. You’re likely already on social media. But do you actively engage a group of people who are or may potentially be future clients? Be transparent and share helpful bits of info about your business topic and you. Part of this is about building credibility. Don’t go overboard; just keep posting on a consistent basis to keep in touch with those interested in your topic area.

3. Comment on articles and blogs related to your field. This is a great way to show your expertise and you’ll get to know others in your field too. I can’t even tell you how much I’ve learned just by reading and commenting on articles by terrific writers who are out there. As a bonus, you’ll soon be known by many as the ‘go-to’ for your industry. 22 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

4. Join active groups and comment on the group discussions. Like tip number three, this is also a great way to get in front of people who are interested in your area of knowledge. Make thoughtful, intelligent comments and others will be likely to engage in the discussion as well.

5. Make sure your business is registered with Google. If you are a brick-and-mortar business, be sure to register on Google Places. This simple move will help to make sure you show up in search results. Be patient, It may take a few weeks, but it is well worth it. If you don’t have a store front, don’t worry, Google will still index your business. If you’re unsure how to do this, Google has lots of online help available.

By following these five basic suggestions, you will give your business a booster-shot to increased on-line credibility. Potential clients will start finding you through your fresh and valuable articles, intelligent comments and social media buzz! Give your Business a Shot in the SEO Arm •

What

are people more likely to look at, love and buy from? A beautifully designed website which immediately grabs you by the eye balls, triggers emotions and really stands out from most other online offers– or – a website that is dull and boring, with standard pictures, mismatching colours and plain brand fonts?

I knew you’d get it right! Now, even though the phrase “First impressions are the most lasting” has been chewed on, digested, and thrown up again way too often, it still holds a very true truth. Studies show that human beings – people you would like to help, work with and make insanely happy – retain 80% of what they see. (Opposed to only 20% of what they read, or a meagre 10% of what they hear).

That’s 20% of an irresistible Look & Feel. Another 20% matching Brand Colours. 20% smart Brand Fonts (today’s topic). And 20% of something we’ll talk about in next month’s issue.

So How Do You Choose Your Brand Fonts?

a b c d e

Randomly (and get a forgettable ugly website in the process). Not at all because you’re completely paralysed by way too many fonts out there (and risk living the “procrastination – frustration – fruitless business – oh my God I might have to get a corporate job again” nightmare). You pick something new every other day (and shoot the lovely baby called brand awareness in the leg before it can even walk). You pay for a graphic design class and spend lots of time learning lots of theory which you are not really into but which – maybe someday – might have turned out to be useful, if your business hadn’t gone down in online flames in the meantime. Or you choose your brand fonts strategically and efficiently, so that you can go on building your business and making the money the unfortunate people from category a) to d) will most likely never make.

Do you want to take the strategic approach? Then I’ve got two options for you… 30 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Option 1 Install free Google Fonts on your website (you can do that using plug-ins) and computer and pick a font combination following the basic rules of font matching:

Use Serif with Sans Serif. Don’t mix moods. Mix styles. Use contrasts. Use no more than three fonts. This option is perfect if you actually already know what you want, or are so bored that you just want to kill the time until your kids get back from daycare or school. With currently around 600 fonts to choose from it can still be overwhelming though.

Option 2 is for you if you want to: Take action right now. Finally get out of the overwhelm trap. Find a font combination that does not only look nice, but actually matches your brand. Rebranding 101: It’s All About Brand Fonts •

Save hours of fruitless research so that you can start doing what’s most important and growing your biz! Prefer to invest $9.95 in a fun and useful workbook rather than a mediocre pizza you’d only eat to comfort yourself after an unsatisfying business day (but carry around on your hips for at least until the end of next year).

Of course option 2 is also a lot prettier. It comes with: 33 pages filled with 30 beautiful font combinations for a) main header b) sub-header and c) body text: 20 Google font combinations, 5 Google font combinations which are also used on Canva, and 5 Canva font combinations. My secret resource for “real-life font tests. My proven strategy for finding the perfect brand font combination.

THE ART OF THE FACILITATOR

FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Sukh Pabial

At lunch yesterday with Jonathan Marshall, we were discussing face to face learning sessions and how these are evolving in their form. The art of the facilitator is moving from a place of ‘trainertainment’ to a place of joint discovery. As facilitators we’ve long known that it’s the discussion amongst the group that is the most powerful form of learning. People having proper dialogue with one another. It is an art too. There’s no defined way of being able to facilitate well. It encompasses so much about the human condition. Listening well, probing questions, challenging opinions, voicing what’s being unsaid, developing thought. For most people these types of skills are a challenge to understand at all. For facilitators we have to be mindful of so many factors too. What’s the context we’re in, who is in the room, who’s missing, what other agendas are at play, what are the pressure points, who’s directing behaviours, whose culture is being adhered to, where are beliefs coming from. These are all important factors, but not often taught. Not explicitly nor via instruction. The Art of the Facilitator •

37

“Certainly I’m seeing more that independent facilitators are using social media to be able to connect with others...” In the learning context, facilitation is moving towards a self-directed approach. Especially with technology enabling people to become savvy on topics in their own time, how do we facilitate highly effective learning sessions when the knowledge is already present in other forums? Respecting the people we’re with to be able to own their problems, own their solutions, own their thinking, own their behaviours, these are all beliefs we as facilitators need to hold true. Otherwise all we’re doing is being lapdogs. And there are many tools and techniques which support the facilitator to be effective. At the same time there are many communities of practise who keep this going with one another. Certainly I’m seeing more that independent facilitators are using social media 38 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

to be able to connect with others and find new and better ways of working with each other and for clients. Add to that the many growing theories of behaviour that are available to be understood better. Mindfulness. Positive Psychology. Neuroscience. Emotional Intelligence. 70:20:10. Time to Think. Vulnerability. What do we know of all these topics? What do they inform about the human condition? How can they help us facilitate better?

I learned a long while ago that facilitation takes time and it takes care. I’m a more confident facilitator today than I was yesterday. It’s a skill I hope to never lose. It’s a craft I deeply enjoy. It’s a way of working I find hugely enjoyable.

Mindfulness Retreat MINDFULNESS AND THE ART OF MANAGING ANGER & STRESS WITH MIKE FISHER, THE UK’S LEADING ANGER MANAGEMENT & STRESS GURU WHAT IS MINDFULNESS MEDITATION? We spend most of our waking hours in distraction and random, discursive thinking. Because we have never cultivated this ability of mind to simply be present, our ‘mindfulness muscle’ is weak, and we find we have little control over our thinking process. For thousands of years meditators from various traditions have known that by working with the simple technique of repeatedly bringing our attention back to the present moment, our ability to be fully present with our experience, both during formal meditation practice and in our everyday life, steadily increases. In recent decades extensive studies have confirmed this claim through the lens of scientific inquiry. Big, Grand, Exciting

News!

(And No, It’s Not Another Baby) Last year when I attended the IF Gathering in Austin, Texas I was wrestling with the Lord over church planting. I have confessed my struggle in a previous post. It was at IF last year that I was really crying out to the Lord. I desired to surrender and walk where He was leading my family and me. It was at IF that the Lord told me to get over myself, to throw my own agenda (of serving in Kenya) out the window because He had other plans for me and He needed me to shut up, give up, and trust that His ways are good and they are higher than my ways. He told me He had work for us to do locally and that, right now, we were called to live on mission, at home. He is so good in His plans… This year at IF I went praying for the Lord to speak to me again. A week before IF a new job opportunity had presented itself. It was as if the Lord had handed me the desires of my heart on a silver platter and told me to taste and see that His ways and His timing are good. Jared and I did not want to make a flash decision. We wanted to pray for two weeks. We wanted to listen to the Lord, not just talk to Him. I went to IF Gathering this year and through speaker after speaker the Lord kept saying He is doing something brand new. He kept saying to walk in faith. He said we are in a generational shift and new leaders need to rise. We need to lay down our fears and step out in faith. We need to follow Him. The Lord that led the Israelites out of slavery is the same Lord who is going before us now. This year at IF we studied Joshua. In Joshua 4:19-24, as the Israelites crossed the dry Jordan River, they collected 12 stones to be a visual reminder of the powerful work God had done in their lives. At this year’s IF, we took stones and each woman wrote the ‘thing’ God was asking her to step out in obedience with. I wrote on my rock and I was marking the moment where I was saying yes to God and no to fear, doubt, and insecurity. I knew then that God wasn’t calling me to walk on water, He was asking me to trust that He can dry the water so my feet can walk on solid ground. Big, Grand, Exciting News! •

Here is my IF Gathering rock: fter much prayer and guidance from the Holy Spirit, the Lord A presented an opportunity for me to serve in foreign missions while allowing my family to still reside in Arkansas, and we answered ‘yes!’

“ Our family desires to have an eternal perspective while we live on mission locally and globally.” This is truly an answer to prayer, since the Lord also called us to missions within our local community through church planting. I need to write an article about that soon as well, because the Lord has been so faithful to provide all that we need and send people for us to love and share Him with. If Jared and I have learned anything in our four and a half years of marriage, it is that God is always doing something brand new. The Lord has led my family to serve in Kenya twice and we were blessed to serve with ACO two years ago (and take our oldest twokids) and see first hand how the Lord is using this non-profit to fulfil His great commission. ur family desires to have an eternal perspective while we live on O mission locally and globally. I am now humbled and excited to share that I am the Missions Advocate for African Christian Outreach, a missions organization 46 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

that was founded in Kenya in 1971. The director, Tom Stickney, and board members chose to bring me on to their team, just as they are expanding their missions across East Africa. African Christian Outreach (ACO) has 3 primary focus areas we feel the Lord is currently calling us to:

1 2 3

Community Investments: We equip Kenyan college students to use their gifts and talents where the Lord plants them after university and we unleash them into East African communities to serve through orphan ministry, mentoring, church planting, agriculture development and medical care. Through discipleship, our desire is to grow in them an eternal perspective to share the gospel with intention as they live their lives. IN-Vestment: As we equip Kenyan college students in preparation of sending them out after graduation, we also desire for our students to serve in Kenya and other East African countries during their school breaks on short term mission trips.I would love for American churches and ministry partners to join these Kenyan students in serving others around the world. 5fifty5 Initiative’: ACO is looking to engage the next generation of US partners with our ministry. We are asking young professionals to give $5 per month for 5 years (and to ask 50 of their friends to join the cause) to act as sustainable support for ACOs move into Rwanda and South Sudan. We are excited and eager to expand the reach of our ministry, but more importantly we are excited to spread the Gospel that provides eternal salvation. Each of these ministry areas require mission partners. I am praying for churches, businesses, and individuals to financially support these ministries as well as send people to work in discipleship training, evangelism, and humanitarian efforts. I am praying for young professionals and college students to join us in our 5fifty5 Initiative. This partnership is just a $5 per month commitment for 5 years and you commit to recruiting 50 of your friends to partner with you. Together our $5 monthly gifts will expand ministry into South Sudan and Rwanda and will ultimately grow the Kingdom of Christ. I believe in this ministry and their investment in the lives of college students across 19 university campuses in Kenya. I love that ACO’s DNA has a local and global mission. I love that Kenyan students are being discipled, equipped, and unleashed to go and serve in their own country and beyond its borders across East Africa. I love that we are partnering with American families, students, and churches to serve alongside our African brothers and sisters. College graduates are currently being trained and sent to new campuses so that unreached people groups near the campus can have the gospel brought straight into their tribes. This is some serious fulfilment of the Great Commission and I am thankful and excited to be a part of what the Lord is doing in and through African Christian Outreach. I would love the opportunity to speak more specifically with you about these opportunities and how you can join us to impact East Africa for the Kingdom of Christ. I am available to come speak to your church, small group, sorority, fraternity, or business (please email me to schedule a speaking event).

I need partners of all shapes and sizes who share a common vision for Kingdom expansion. 48 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

So, what can you do to make a difference now? Become a 5fifty5 partner. Give up 1 coffee a week. Say no to a fast food hamburger. Drink two less sodas each week.

Your $5 now makes a great impact when you agree to recruit your friends and family to join you in this vision. Giving is simple and fast. Just click the link overleaf, then select the Automatic Billing button. I am praying that 250 of you reading this will go NOW and sign up to partner. If only a fraction of you reading this gave $5 this goal would be met today. I am believing it will. If the Lord calls you to give more, please do so! You are sending the gospel out by funding full time missions in Rwanda and South Sudan. Please contact me if you want to know more about our Community Investment projects and our IN-Vestment program. ways for you to give and serve along side us. Also, please pray for my family and I. We want to continue to walk in faith and obedience and sometimes this road is full of unknowns and for a person who enjoys control‌that is a scary feeling. We appreciate all the prayers, encouragement, and future partnerships. I am holding tightly to this verse right now. I am thankful that the One who goes before me is also the One who sends me. I am thankful that the One who will never leave me is also the One whose message we bring.

I know that what I am about to write will be really unpopular with some people. I might even get a few haters, but I am willing to take that chance because I believe in what I am saying and I believe in your right to live how you want to live. There is this massive trend among top ‘experts’ telling you the following untruths: That if you want material things you aren’t spiritual; That if you aren’t absolutely content with what you have now, you aren’t spiritual; That if you care how you look you aren’t spiritual; That if you regularly watch The Kardashians, then shame on you! Here’s the truth. Of course your happiness shouldn’t depend on material things. Of course you should always find something to be grateful for, and when you do, peace and love and abundance find you. And of course, your hair shouldn’t be the most important thing on your to do list. But … happiness is about what makes you feel good. Period. We are not simple, one dimensional beings. We are women! And we are dreamy and dynamic and brimming over with multiple Can I get a Hell Yes? •

passions and a laundry list of soul-deep desires. They all matter. Your preference for overpriced coffee is as important as your preference for friends who show up on time. That hot bath you enjoy at night? It matters as much as your need to be heard by your partner. All of these things—the surface and the deep—are pieces to your puzzle. They are ingredients to your happiness recipe. Wanting to wear nice clothes doesn’t make you less spiritual, it makes you human. Human beings are multi-layered works of art.

And women? Multi-layered masterpieces! You want to know what’s going on in Hollywood and in the White House. You care about the latest trend in beauty and the latest trend in wellness. You enjoy your personal development books, but you enjoy them more if you’re sitting on a comfy chair, with a cashmere blanket and a cup of tea. It’s ok to enjoy life on every level. It’s what you’re here for! Life is meant to be a colourful, scenic journey layered with earth shattering adventures, quiet moments, smiles and love, the contented sigh after your first sip of morning coffee, the deep breaths of meditation, the radiant smile after a day at the salon.

Anything that makes you feel good, that gets you laughing, that makes you smile, sets the spirit of love and the law ofattraction in motion 54 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

I’m a ‘girly’ girl. I spend stupid amounts of money on makeup. I also pray and meditate daily. Anything that makes you feel good, that gets you laughing, that makes you smile, sets the spirit of love and the law of attraction in motion. When you are happy, you glow. You light up the way for everyone around you. And it doesn’t matter if that glow came from a deep, meditative experience or a luxury face cream that makes you feel like a million bucks. Happy is happy. So yes. Learn how to process life in a way that serves you. Learn how to master your mind and stay grateful. But know what happiness means to you. On every level! Know what you like, what you prefer, what you expect. And know that it doesn’t matter if your goal this week is to hit the sale racks or start a revolution, it’s all valid, because it’s all you.

Know what you want! Realize how much you deserve it. Shout it! Claim it! And in the spirit of one life, in the name of the clock ticking, for the love of all things awesome go out and get it…

THE SCIENCE OF How Food and Sleep Affect Your Skin and Health Pt 2

FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Rachael Pontillo 60 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

In Part I, we talked about the importance of sleep to our mental and physical wellbeing, and how it affects our skin. In this post, guest writer Hayley Irvin discusses another way to supercharge your body and improve your mood, which will also improve your skin – food! Every year it seems we’re in for a new round of fad diets – low carb, no carb, gluten-free, raw food, paleo. The list goes on and on. A common theme throughout these different diet crazes is avoiding things that, for one reason or another, you shouldn’t be eating. No breads or grains, nothing cooked or derived from animal products, etc. However, a good diet is more about finding a balance of what you should be eating than it is about cutting out entire categories of food. Think about food as the fuel for your body: the better quality of fuel you put in, the healthier you’ll be in the long run – and the healthier your are on the inside, the better your skin looks on the outside. If you’ve seen how to improve your physical and mental health and skin, consider incorporating some of these healthy tips into your diet.

EAT YOUR FRUITS AND VEGGIES. A staple of every mum’s repertoire. More and more research is being done every year that proves just how right your mother was.

In addition to being high in fibre and low in sodium, fat and calories, fruits and vegetables are loaded with vitamins and minerals our bodies need. Indeed, regularly consuming a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables has been shown to reduce the risk for developing chronic illnesses like hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Eating fruit at breakfast is a great way to incorporate it into your diet. Bananas, as most people know, are packed with potassium and fibre. Citrus fruits, especially grapefruit and oranges, are loaded with Vitamin C, which is good for your eyes, heart, skin and immune system. In addition to Vitamin C, berries also contain antioxidants and amino acids that can help prevent inflammation, high blood pressure and certain types of cancer. Although the simple sugars found in most fruits can cause spikes in your glucose levels, this varies from fruit to fruit. Cherries, bananas, and grapefruit usually have a glycemic index of 35 or lower.

Yellow and orange fruits and vegetables like sweet potatoes are high in beta carotene Beta-carotene is an orange pigment found in carrots, red bell peppers, squash, cantaloupe and other similarly coloured fruits and veggies. When eaten, our bodies convert beta-carotene into Vitamin A, which plays in important role in vision health, skin health and gene transcription. 62 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Dark green vegetables like spinach, kale, Swiss chard and broccoli are packed with antioxidants and Vitamins A, C, E and K. The presence of folate, which our bodies convert into Vitamin B, and the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin indicates that leafy greens may help prevent macular degeneration and other eye diseases.

OPT FOR FISH AND OTHER LEAN SOURCES OF PROTEIN. Although there has been much debate about how much protein people should consume on a daily basis, almost everyone can agree that is a vital component of a healthy diet – and since skin is made primarily of protein, it’s important for healthy skin as well. When consumed, our body breaks protein down into amino acids that serve multiple functions throughout the body like digesting food, repairing tissue, growing bones and muscles, and building

new cells. Like Vitamin C, the human body is unable to synthesize new amino acids or store extra for a rainy day. Although protein is found naturally in seeds, nuts, beans and animal products, many people receive their protein exclusively from meat, usually beef or chicken. However, when choosing protein, you should also think about fat, as the two are often closely related.

Even lean cuts of pork, beef, and lamb contain saturated fats and ‘bad’ cholesterol that are bad for your heart. Salmon, tuna, trout and other fatty fish are loaded with mono-and polyunsaturated fats that promote cardiovascular health while also nourishing your eyes and skin. It’s important to keep in mind that meat can also have a lot of calories. Fish and skinless chicken and turkey have the lowest protein to calorie ratio, approximately 1 gram of protein per 4.5 calories. Pork loin and lean beef have similar ratios, 1:52 and 1:53 respectively. If you do not eat meat, keep in mind that beans (1 gram of protein per 10.4 calories) and nuts (1 gram of protein for 15.8 calories) are some of the most calorie-dense sources of protein. However, they are also rich in fibre and healthy fats. (I will point out that calories are mostly a concern for people who eat a lot of processed, fast, and packaged foods – people who eat balanced portions of a primarily whole foods-based diet of home cooked meals normally don’t need to worry as much about calories!) 64 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

CHOOSE YOUR CARBS WISELY. Contrary to many popular diets, carbohydrates are not the enemy. You don’t have to cut them out in order to eat healthy – you just have to choose better ones. Carbohydrates are an important nutrient that provides both energy and fibre. Found naturally in fruits, veggies and grains, fibre helps regulate glucose levels and the absorption of nutrients in our bodies. Smart carbohydrates include fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, quinoa, and rice, pasta and bread made with whole grains. As an added bonus, quinoa, seeds, nuts and beans are also great sources of protein. Because smart carbs have been minimally processed and contain unrefined, complex sugars, they take longer for our bodies to break down. This helps us maintain a more even blood sugar level throughout the day, which helps us feel fuller and avoid overeating. If your daily schedule or lifestyle doesn’t make it practical to carry these types of foods, protein bars like the low sugar honey peanut bar by Promax are a great alternative since they are easy to store, quick to eat and help maintain your glucose levels.

Bad carbohydrates, on the other hand, often lack fibre and contain lots of refined sugar andprocessed white flour. These simple compounds are easily digested and lead to sudden peaks in glucose levels, followed by sudden drops. This can The Science of How Food & Sleep Affect Your Skin & Health, Part II •

65

contribute to feelings of hunger even if you’ve just recently eaten. Bad carbs include white bread, white pasta, white rice and canned fruits and bottled juice.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT PROBIOTICS! Our digestive systems are home to more than 500 different types of bacteria. Known as gut flora, the bacterial medley found in our stomach and intestines plays an important role in our digestive health. An imbalance of good and bad bacteria can lead to bad breath, gassiness, constipation, bladder infections, candida overgrowth, food intolerance and immune dysfunction. A healthy balance, however, can prevent or improve many of these conditions. It’s not uncommon to take antibiotics to fight bacterial infections, but the reverse is also true – we can consume certain probiotics to encourage the growth of good bacteria needed to digest food and fight off illness.

Instead of munching on candy and chips, snack on brightly coloured fruits and vegetables. Substitute spinach for lettuce on sandwiches and salads 66 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

To improve your digestive function, try incorporating probiotics into your diet. Although there are many over-the-counter supplements available, many of these have not been fully evaluated by the FDA. Naturally fermented foods are rich in probiotics, and include yogurt, sauerkraut, tempeh, sourdough bread, kimchi, olives, kombucha, and miso soup. Although probiotics are safe for most people, they may not be the best choice for people with comprised immune systems. If you have a pre-existing immune disorder, consult with your healthcare professional before beginning a probiotic regimen. The best part about these healthy diet tips is that they are easy to incorporate into your day-to-day life. Instead of munching on candy and chips, snack on brightly coloured fruits and vegetables. Substitute spinach for lettuce on sandwiches and salads. Go for whole grain pasta and bread if you can. Instead of eating sausage or bacon at breakfast, eat a handful of nuts or seeds.

Remember, there is no better time to improve your health than the present. Use our easy tips and get started today! The Science of How Food & Sleep Affect Your Skin & Health, Part II •

ERIN & SARAH WHITAKER EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Article by Maurice Dwayne Smith Confessions of a Hollywood Stylist •

71

Erin and Sarah Whitaker, who co-founded Parker Whitaker Productions, have helped bolster and enhance the Los Angeles fashion industry’s national image as maverick talented designer and producer protégées of Art Hearts Fashion founder Erik Rosete, having augmented his platform’s image at not only this month’s LA Fashion Week, but also at New York’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Erin and Sarah have made a name for themselves as a very respected dynamic duo within the fashion industry.

Erik Rosete repeatedly emphasises the dynamic duo’s worth by saying, “They are my girls! They are my rock and they are the only ones that I trust, or feel is responsible enough to allow access to my baby, which is Art Hearts Fashion. They are intelligent enough and responsible enough to know what to do.”

Maurice: What are the keys to your success and what does one have to do to acquire the necessary skills to replicate your achievements?

72 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Erin: The key to our success is Sarah. There

is no way that I can do what I do without her. She has the answers to everything and we are always available. I rely on her and I couldn’t ask for a better partner. She is such a big support for me. She is the reason that I have made such strides in the industry. We have always had such a passion for this type of work. Sarah is the key. The best way to learn is to get your hands dirty and intern with us. You start at the bottom ‘volunteer’ level, but you can work your way up. The best way to learn is by being there. I forced my way into it and learned to be punctual, have dedication, communication and have persistence. I also made sure that I was irreplaceable.

Sarah: That’s so nice!

Maurice: What did you do before you started doing this?

Erin: I studied writing in college. I was writing for a makeup

company and a political website, and then I kinda saw Sarah. She was working on LA Fashion Week, and that’s when I knew I wanted to start writing about fashion; about the shows; doing all of their press releases. That’s kinda how I started working.

Sarah: Before this I was doing other types of events. I worked

with a non-profit for 5 years, then I got into event production and started to realize that I had a lot of strength … but I realized that something was missing – it was fashion. So I started doing a lot of fashion shows.

Confessions of a Hollywood Stylist •

We are doing the same thing we were doing before but now we can structure it the way we want and work with the companies we want to work with. Erin Whitaker

Maurice: What exactly are the duties of producers? Erik is the designer and producer of this bunch, yes?

Erin: Sarah handles the things that I am not good at, and I

handle the things she is not good at. Sarah and I work really well together. Sarah deals with all of the ‘A-Z of logistics’ and is in contact with the designers non stop. Right?

Sarah: Yes I would say so! Erin: I handle things that are more PR and

media related, so together it forms this really good foundation that we are able to build on. We spend time with each designer and we really make sure that we are able to answer all of their questions – because all new designers have questions about their guest list or their models etc. We take those questions and make them feel secure. We let them know that we are always available. If they call one of us then they can talk to both of us. We are probably always together. If there’s something they need, or unsure – something they want

to bring up or do something totally new, we’re able to answer those questions and help them. We are really keen on them being honest and creative with us, and then we let them know we are here to help – to make their show successful and comfortable, and that there’s a point to all of this.

Maurice: Do you produce shows in Milan, and other countries as well?

Erin: Well, we are working up to London, and as you know

we just wrapped up the final week of The New York MercedesBenz Fashion Week at Lincoln Centre. So, we got to close the tents. Our models took the final runway at this momentous occasion. Yeah! We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to close that show of The Mercedes-Benz fashion Week.

Maurice: This may seem like a crazy question, but

why is it closing. Why can’t it keep going on and continue to perpetuate?

Erin: Well it is going on but not in New York. Mercedes-

Benz is no longer the sponsor. Mercedes-Benz made that decision to pull out after 5 years.

Maurice: Are you going to do your own thing too?

Erin: Long, long ago, we started volunteering with a passion

to produce shows and building knowledge, and last May-June 2014 we launched our own brand. We are doing the same thing we were doing before but now we can structure it the way we want and work with the companies we want to work with. Confessions of a Hollywood Stylist •

75

Sarah: We have been able to branch out. We do film

premières. We launched our own nail polish line. Lots of fun things now.

Maurice: Diversification, right?

Sarah: Exactly!

Maurice: Are you leaning to do what Erik Rosete does on a full-time basis. It sounds like it?

Sarah: We do it with Erik on a full-time basis. We

worked on this show ‘The W Hollywood’ and in between seasons we work on other things such as fundraisers, what ever it is. We’ve done some Lions Gate premières as well.

Erin: We are diversifying!

Marina BerBeryan: (to Sarah & Erin)

Please do keep up the fantastic work that you’ve been doing because you make us very happy!

Sarah & Erin: Thank you. We do it for you guys. Erin: It’s about the community. It’s about Los Angeles. It’s about building this city into the next fashion Mecca. The talent is here but you need a platform … we are that platform!

Marina BerBeryan: What do you think of

Tom Ford coming to LA?

76 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Erin: It’s a huge, huge step! Sarah: We are making strides in the right direction. Him

coming here is amazing. It sets the tone.

Maurice: How did you meet Marina BerBeryan? Sarah: How did we meet Marina? She was attending all of the

shows of LA Fashion Week, and we started talking and we loved what she was doing. We just kind of formed this relationship.

Julia Murray Introducing Former Olympian, PowHERhouse Julia Murray FIND ME ONLINE HERE

By Charlene SanJenko 82 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Make goals and dream big. If you look at the big picture, it may seem overwhelming and near impossible, but continuing to take the little steps towards achieving your goals and dreams makes anything possible. Before you know it you’ll be creating the next goal for yourself. Meet Julia Murray, former Olympian, retired Canadian freestyle skier, female entrepreneur, fitness advocate and owner of Jules Fuel. Julia has recently accepted the position of Performance & Nutrition Editor with PowHERhouse, and we are proud to partner with her to continue building strong women, together!

An intro to Julia’s story I have been skiing since the age of two, then ski raced until the age of seventeen before switching to ski cross. With my mother Julia Murray being a professional freestyle skier in the 7080’s, along with my Dad’s background of being one of the four Crazy Canuck Downhill ski racers in the 70-80’s, skiing is definitely in my blood! I grew up in a town filled with inspiring people who shared my love for the mountains. Introducing Former Olympian, PoweHERhouse Julia Murray •

83

In grade five my teacher had us write down our dreams and goals, with drawings, on a opened up paper bag. With coloured pencils I wrote:

My Olympic Dream Is… “To be a down hill skier because my Dad was one and my Mom was a freestyle skier. So I want to be something to do with skiing. I think I have the ‘jeans’ in me. I would also like to travel.” So there you have it! Write your dreams down and you will be one step closer to making them come true! My skiing career took me to countries in all four hemispheres; the World Cup podium multiple times, to the Olympics in 2010, and 2nd place at the World Championships in 2011.

Ups and Downs It wasn’t all easy! I blew my knee one month before my Olympic race (I was considered a medal contender). With positivity, physio and a surgical scope, I made it into the start gate with my teammates and my friends and family cheering at the finish line. I was really disappointed at the time, but looking back, 12th place in the state I was in was okay. Reconstruction surgery followed, right after I proudly marched in the closing ceremonies with my teammates as part of Team Canada. The next year I came back, but blew my knee again at X Games – overshooting a jump and flying 150 feet! I competed at World 84 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Championships the next week. The x-rays at the time were unclear and the doctors didn’t know for sure that I had torn my ACL. As I eventually found out, I earned myself a silver medal skiing without an ACL! Then, in the following days, I underwent a more serious surgery – full reconstruction and microfracture surgery – which was followed by one and a half years of rehab and no skiing. I then decided it was time to move onto other things. I went to Capilano University and completed a communications diploma, started the ‘Ski with an Olympian’ program with Whistler Blackcomb, and set out to create Jules Fuel!

My passion for alpine ski racing wasn’t at a high point, and this was exactly what I needed to re-fuel my excitement. It was the beginning of the last steps of making my Olympic dream come true.

What kept you going, what was it about the skiing that kept pulling you back to the mountain? It all stems from growing up in Whistler and more directly from the Olympic Dream school project that I created in grade 5 (little did I know that I would live my project to a tee). It was ingrained in my mind before I even knew what it really meant. Growing up with kids in my community and competing in multiple different sports Introducing Former Olympian, PoweHERhouse Julia Murray •

had a big impact on growing to love competition. My parents were always there to support me but never pushed me in any particular direction. I really enjoyed skiing throughout high school with all of my really good friends, and that created a good base for the years of competition to come. Joining the national ski cross team five years before the Olympics was impeccable timing for me in my life. My passion for alpine ski racing wasn’t at a high point, and this was exactly what I needed to re-fuel my excitement. It was the beginning of the last steps of making my Olympic dream come true.

Injuries, Disappointments and Rising Again! Being that close to stepping into the start gate as a medal contender and then enduring a horrible injury just one month prior to my Olympic race was incredibly bad timing. It was extremely hard to take both mentally and physically. It was everything I had been working towards for as long as I could remember. My focus was tunnel visioned to get to that start gate in front of my family, friends and teammates to prove it to myself that I could do it … to be a part of something bigger than myself … to be part of making an impact in my sport. At the point of my injury before the Olympics, I was a trained elite athlete with a set goal in mind and an incredible support crew around me, all with the same drive and goal to help me achieve my dreams. Even though my surgeon recommended against me racing, there was so much more within and surrounding me that persuaded me that I had to race and that I could race. Introducing Former Olympian, PoweHERhouse Julia Murray •

87

It all happened very quickly – using every moment leading up to the Olympic race to get my knee in ‘race-able’ condition. From picking the right knee brace to physiotherapy for multiple hours each day, and tedious exercises in the gym along with a scope to allow me to bend my knee. But at that point, I was in the zone with my dream goal just a finger-length away.

Can you talk to us about athletic lessons learned that you are now incorporating into your entrepreneurial life with Jules Fuel? There are so many crossovers between being an athlete and my entrepreneurial Jules Fuel adventure. As an athlete, I had to promote myself to sponsors to gain support. With Jules Fuel, I’m excited to promote something that is outside of me that will help others to obtain their optimal health. Sharing this experience excites me! As an athlete, training and competing was my life. And you have to have fun in life! Baby-steps (going to the gym 5-6 days a week,

Baby-steps … are what counts in the big picture, and what gets you to your epic goal. During each baby-step, it was important for me to have fun with it and enjoy what I was doing. 88 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

visualizing, on-hill runs down the course, etc.) are what counts in the big picture, and what gets you to your epic goal. During each baby-step, it was important for me to have fun with it and enjoy what I was doing. Having fun with team mates, goofing around on training days … this kept the passion. Training as an athlete each day is very much like taking the steps with Jules Fuel. We take it day-by-day and excitement comes as well as issues, but each step, whether it be a hurdle, or little detail, gets us further and closer to our next goal. Looking back, it looks like I’ve done a lot to get to where I am now but each day it feels like I’m never doing enough!

Editor’s note:

Jules Fuel is a quinoa-based, superfood breakfast cereal with goji berries, chia, flax, sunflower and pumpkin seeds. It’s something that I used to make for myself as an athlete. Now it’s available in all Whistler grocery stores, Vancouver Whole Foods, Spud, Nesters and IGAs, including Gibsons and Wilson Creek. It’s a breakfast that will help you to make the most out of your day and be the best you can be!

What do you do ‘for thrills’ now that you don’t ski at that same level? You must miss the adrenaline. There’s nothing like racing head-to-head down a ski cross course. It’s the only way you can tell what your full potential is. There’s also no shortage of thrills to be had in British Columbia, and in my home town of Whistler. I have the coolest carbon fibre mountain bike – Introducing Former Olympian, PoweHERhouse Julia Murray •

On Nutrition I’m becoming a holistic nutritionist, so in the meantime here are some tips on what a day of eating should include: Drink a big glass of lemon water, apple cider vinegar and cayenne upon wakening. Eat breakfast! Make it a complex carbohydrate meal that is low glycemic and full of antioxidants – Jules Fuel topped with fruit and kefir!

Snack on low glycemic snacks (apple with almond butter). For lunch work on food combining. If you’re a vegetarian, eat legumes and grains together in a salad for a delish lunch option. Instead of grabbing a 4.00pm cookie, blend yourself a smoothie with kale, romaine, carrot, banana and berries. Or eat Jules Fuel by the spoonful to tide you over until dinner. Dinner should be the smallest meal of the day. Include a big salad with lettuce, tomato and avocado. Get your essential amino acids from either a lentil and rice stew (if you’re vegetarian) or a wild salmon packed full of essential fatty acids. Dessert – Banana soft serve (frozen bananas blended with vanilla and cinnamon) or a piece of fruit. Try popcorn with coconut oil and some sea salt if you’re having a movie night!

THE HOUSE THAT MADE ME

SICK

Several

years ago now I was going through the hardest time in my life. To say that life had thrown me a curve ball was a massive understatement. So much had gone wrong there was little left that could go right. I don’t want to bore you with the details I lost my health, my husband, my home, by so called best friend and a shed load of money within a few months.

Don’t

worry I’m not going to get all Poor Me about it, as you can see I got through it and things turned out great. I do want to share however my experience in the middle of all of this trauma, of moving to a house with really strange energy.

The house I am talking about is beautiful, make no bones about it. It’s Victorian and boasts all of the features you would expect, and from the moment I walked in I loved it. I offered the full asking price before I’d even seen the bedrooms, the high ceilings and stripped floors had me hook, line and sinker. I couldn’t wait for the day I moved in, I’d met someone else now and was heavily pregnant at the time. I only slept two nights in my new home before our beautiful baby girl entered the world, and I felt blessed beyond belief as I Am sure every new mother does. The first few months passed as expected and all was well, apart from the fact I was so tired. I know its tiring having a new baby but this was more than that, it was extreme, and to make things worse the baby would not sleep. Like hardly ever sleep. It wasn’t long before I was a walking zombie with a nappy bag.

I tried

everything to help us, and nothing worked at all and I started to suffer from other symptoms as well such as extremely bad psoriasis on my scalp and even more tiredness. My mother left work and practically moved in with us. Things got so bad that I was actually taken to hospital and admitted to the neuro ward to be tested for things like Multiple Sclerosis! Luckily that was not the case, but still the medical profession were stumped and wrote off my symptoms as severe ME or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. In desperation I went to see a kinesiologist who worked on me and I saw a marked improvement, but it was temporary. I went back the following week and the same thing happened. Then the penny dropped. There was something going on with the energy in the house that was knocking me all out of balance and also stopping my baby from sleeping. I looked online and soon immersed myself in articles about Geopathic Stress and found out loads about energy grids, ley lines and more and how they can be detrimental to health and well-being.

We all have a core signature vibration or resonance, and energy frequencies affect us all in different ways. I found that discordant energy can block your flow of income as well as create issues in relationships, sleep patterns, health and overall wellness. It was a real eye opener and something I had never considered before. I wondered why my husband

was not affected, but when I attended a full weekend workshop to learn how to map energy in buildings I was told that it affects people in different ways. We all have a core signature vibration or resonance and energy frequencies affect us all in different ways. In this house it was my daughter and I who were affected, and when the energy in the house was actually mapped there was a grid line right across my side of the bed and also an energy swirl in the nursery that made for a very unsettled atmosphere. I was amazed at this, and really pleased that I had learned about it because it meant there were some things that I could do to help balance the energy in the building and improve things for us all.

is part of the energy work that I include in my new program Working With Energy, if you are interested in helping to balance and clear the energy in your home and much more, it could be perfect for you!

About a Homemade Year

Food, Home & Family

Once

Upon a Recipe Once Upon a Recipe by Karen Greene is one of my favourite cookbooks. I bought this to enjoy with one of my daughters when she was not quite out of childhood. It’s lovely to read, like all good cookbooks, and has wonderful illustrations of nursery rhymes and quotes from children’s books. The book opens with Robert Lewis Stevenson’s ‘A Child’s Garden of Verses’ – “If you would grow great and stately, You must try to walk sedately. And must still be bright and quiet, And content with simple diet: And remain, through all bewild’ring, Innocent and honest children. Happy hearts and happy faces, Happy play in grassy places, That was how, in ancient ages, Children grew to kings and sages.” One of our favourite recipes from this book is Curious George Slush, and it’s easy to prepare with adult supervision!

METHOD This one’s really simple and takes just a minute to make! Just give the ingredients a ride in the blender. When blended to a nice, smooth consistency, pour and drink! There you have it. What a delicious treat for you to share with your children on those warm weather days (makes 1 serving).

That’s Not What I Was Expecting!

By Cherie DeBurger 104 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

Everyone needs some excitement or a little surprise in their life now and then. Occasionally that excitement happens naturally like when the weatherman says it’s going to rain and storm all day, but you wake up to bright warm sunshine streaming through the window. Other times a surprise is a thoughtful gesture, like getting a bouquet of flowers ‘just because.’ What about those times you scratch a lottery ticket and actually win something! It’s funny how winning ten dollars can make you so happy, even though you spent twenty dollars to win it. I have to admit that a lot of times things don’t happen as I expect them to and not all of life’s little surprises are wonderful. Having children you are guaranteed surprises of all shapes, sizes and colours. Sometimes, as was the case with my fifth baby, the children themselves are the surprise! It doesn’t seem to matter how young they are, all children love a surprise, all kinds of surprises, from the very simple game of peeka-boo to the ripping open of presents on Christmas morning. They not only love to get surprises but they love to give surprises as well. The trouble is that sometimes what they consider to be so ‘wonderful’, we, as adults think ‘umm … not so much!’ But as they gaze up at you with their big eyes and ear-to-ear smile we are unable to dash their spirits and try to react with the same enthusiasm that is exuding from their very being. ...he thought they were such a treasure. Here I’d been spending way too much on toys when I could have wrapped up a couple of rocks from the driveway! One of my sons came home the other day from kindergarten with a ‘guess what I got?’ look on his face. He was so excited as he fought to get out of his mitts, scarf, hat and boots all the while telling me he had something just for me. I thought he was going to pull out some wonderful work of macaroni art or a page with a brightly drawn and coloured picture of our family. Instead he reached into his pocket and pulled out some stones. “Wow!” I said with genuine amazement, not because I thought the stones were amazing but because of the fact that he thought they were such a treasure. Here I’d been spending way too much on toys when I could have wrapped up a couple of rocks from the driveway! What I didn’t realise was that he had kept a few of the pebbles that he liked the most and put them into his pants pocket. Of course that was one of the times I had been in a hurry and hadn’t checked the pockets before doing the laundry. Each one sparkled as we found them in various pieces of clothing as well as in the bottom of the washer.

One day I heard one of the boys talking in his room. No one was over so I stood just outside the door to listen and see who he was 106 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

talking to. After a few minutes of trying to figure it out I walked in and to my surprised he had made his own personal ant farm in one of his dresser drawers. He had been feeding them pieces of his bed time snacks and wanted to know if I was proud of him for taking such good care of his ‘pets’. The phrase ‘Mommy I got something for you’ now causes a momentary quickening of my pulse. Hoping for the best I turn around slowly, carefully, building up courage to face what is going to be thrust into what I consider my personal space. I usually ask a few questions before I dare to put out my hand. …

1. Is it alive? 2. Was it alive? 3. Can it bite me? My beautiful three year old with golden locks and big beautiful soft eyes that could put any puppy dog to shame stands in front of me with her hands behind her back. After getting my attention time begins to move in slow motion as she brings her hand forward with her pointer finger extended. It seems the treasure that she is so proudly displaying and wanting to give to me is a treasure that she has retrieved from her own nose. Quickly I grab a tissue and dispose of her ‘gift’. Then with total disdain she looks at me and turns – off she stomps loudly stating, “Now I have to get another one!” They never showed stuff like this on Leave it to Beaver! Just because the children get older doesn’t necessarily mean the surprises get better. Meeting your daughters new boyfriend for That’s Not What I Was Expecting! •

the first time can be one surprise after another. Opening the door as he flings his cigarette butt into the yard while you momentarily mistake his colourfully tattooed arm for a psychedelic t-shirt doesn’t make your heart feel warm and fuzzy. Although that’s better than the surprise of finding out he already has a child and an ex-wife or maybe a criminal record. Or when your thirty something year old child springs the surprise on you that he is moving back home again. He assures you it will just be for a little while as he parades in with his two Saint Bernard dogs, fully grown boa constrictor and his electric guitar and amp. As you grab your shop vac to suck up the shedding fur as well as the slobber that has now turned your hallway into a slip and slide leading to the location of your new furry house guests, you try to find the ‘good’ in the new situation.

In all of these scenarios we must remember that it could be worse, yes it could be. Learning to look at the positive of any and all situations is a very poignant survival technique and will also aid in self-preservation, mostly of your sanity. It is in any parents best interests to quickly learn how to lie to yourself and believe it.

As the parent of five children I will tell you that the good surprises more than out weigh the bad. Some of the surprises will turn out to be your most precious belongings and greatest keepsakes.
