All Life Events Are Positive My partner says he finds my tendency toward seeking the silver lining, the lesson, and the comedy, in a poor set of events
‘endearing’. I happen to consider this one of the healthiest and, dare I say, effective ways of living your life. It’s true. I’m forever seeking the lessons learned, the value, and the thing that gives it all meaning. This isn’t to say that my life has been roses. If you read my editorials frequently, I’ve been quite candid about the serious challenges I faced as a young adult, including an acrimonious divorce as I closed my 20s.

You see, when you are an otherwise sober individual with some degree of career success (i.e. you are working in a career path of your choice and for all intents and purposes are stable and fairly content), hitting rock bottom is a far different kettle of fish than that of perhaps … an addict. But perhaps that is what I was – an addict of sorts. Addicted to an outwardly acceptable, tried and true, even-keeled set of life choices, including marrying a quite controlling husband (who frankly I reflect back on and question whether I ever felt one ounce of love from) simply for the utter delight of declaring, “yes, I’m married and we have two gorgeous children …” You know, that- old chestnut. We gage our success and life achievement against such rudimentary scales. And from a spiritual perspective, it really is not only the ‘safe’ route. It is actually the primitive, smallminded, young soul path. How very brave to chase that which makes our heart sing! How utterly clever and responsible to reject all that does not resonate, in favour of exactly and only our truth and our calling! Why do we tell our children to play such safe games when choosing classes, careers or even partners? Why is art so undervalued when it is all around us, and so … integral … to our choices, the experience of a meal, our décor and even our interactions with technology? Why do we judge our preferences of whom we love, for fear rejection from others? Why, so many things, really. When you are out of resonance, life is a chore. Every aspect of living, working, even our celebrations, all simply another Letter From the Editor, Michelle Fitz •

task on our checklist of to-dos. This is wrong – you know this, right? It is. It’s wrong. It’s at this stage, (often after a prolonged period of time and very often after a series of broken promises, internal angst, and even arguments), that an otherwise sober and successful individual will hit his or her own rock bottom. Sometimes rock bottom means suffering a great, emotionally unsettling loss thereafter, other times it means a fresh start, however forceful it may feel at the time. You see when you seek to return to a state of grace and resonance, energetically you reject all which no longer serves you and by attaching a deeply held want, a basic and very genuine desire, to change, the universe responds very quickly. It’s like dominoes. My loss manifested in the form if a very dark phase of depression whereby quite honestly, my friend looked after me intermittently for many months. I had suffered a complete life change that left a void so great across all facets of my identity, my time, and even my choices, behaviours, and shopping habits – practically overnight. That was technically post-rock bottom … yet it felt like the very bottom of despair. And yet, eventually I chose happiness. Eventually, I chose positivity. Eventually, I chose to make life brand new. Why do I seek the lesson? Why do I see the silver lining? Darling, it’s so that I can live. It’s so that I can reflect back and rationalise that somehow it all had meaning. And you know what, by analysing my life this way, it also helps me understand at a deep level exactly the steps that brought me to that dark place. I know now exactly how and why it happened, that I was no victim, and my part played. I know the signs, both of repeat circumstances and choices, and as such, I know that I am stronger at this helm than ever. 10 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
When studying my Reiki II qualification, my Reiki master teacher asked that we go back through the course of our lives literally from birth and send Reiki to ourselves, those around us or involved, and the moment for every major life event we have experienced to date. I have taken away so much value from this exercise. Without my step-father and the chaotic, often physically harsh, yet somehow beautifully nostalgic upbringing I had, Hat Trick would not exist. For I would never have been a lost soul and I would never have sought to help other lost souls. I could go on for so very long explaining the relevance, the truth and the value in the lessons I’ve learned in every single misstep I have made, every exploitation, every injustice, every mistake or lie – all of it has meaning.
Celebrate your history. Do not allow it to define your personality or value. Embrace a future aligned to the joy you want to feel. Be the person you want to be. Show the world that you are a capable x, y or z, not by proclaiming to be one, not by adopting an agenda that you’ll show them all, but by literally being what you want to be. Be that. Be that and let the world see exactly that you ARE.

Branding Your
Juju
“Authentic brands have juju. Juju is innate energy, characteristic of an organization. It’s something a company creates, gives off, leaves behind, or picks up from someone in its mix.”
F
or more than a quarter century, I’ve been involved with building brands. And I’ve learned a number of things that are always true – entirely true – no matter what a business sells or who is at the helm. These are not things we learn in MBA School. These are things we learn as parents, players of team sports, partners in relationships, neighbours, members of the Home Owner’s Association Board and guests at cocktail parties – but they’re the things we forget when we’re staring at balance sheets. We tend to think that branding is a sort of magic – that the folks on Madison Avenue know secrets that mere mortals can’t possibly understand. I’m here to tell you: that’s bull. You can get this. It’s not magic that makes a brand. It’s hard work and consistency.

good brand shows the world what you’ve authentically got going on. Authentic is a tricky word these days. Folks are tossing it around like they did “outside the box,” “paradigm shift,” and “360-degree review.” But authentic is not one of those words. It means: Conforming to fact, and therefore worthy of trust, reliance and belief. Buzzword? I think not. Authentic brands have juju. Juju is innate energy, characteristic of an organization. It’s something a company creates, gives off, leaves behind, or picks up from someone in its mix. It can be good, and it can be bad, but it’s intrinsic. Your juju is already there. Julia Hook: Branding Your Juju •
15
A compelling brand identity package – which is what most people think of as a brand, and what ad agencies generally create for their clients – should be crafted around the juju that already exists. That way, the brand lives. It breathes through your products and your employees. And your customers feel it every time they bump against you. When you touch them, your juju rubs off on them.
A
llow me to explain brand juju in a way that might bring the idea home for you. When I was a kid, our house was where all the kids hung out. I had six brothers, and their tribes ate, slept, and horsed around at our house endlessly. One of my brothers was a bass player in a band, and they practiced in our basement. I was seven years younger and I can remember these long haired, pimply-fore-headed teens sucking down biscuits and sausage gravy like Dysons at our breakfast table. We lived in Dublin, Ohio, and we had no money. Other kids had giant houses, swimming pools with rock water features (before water features were the rage, and because in Ohio there were actually a piles of rocks in yards), new cars and nicer turntables with bigger speakers. But we had two seriously solid, authentic things going on at our house: First, my mum could cook. She could sling hash that would make you cry. She did it on a budget, and she did it for the masses. It was seriously good grub. And second, my mum loved kids. Julia Hook: Branding Your Juju •
17
Some clarification is in order here: my mum was a lover, but she wasn’t a pushover. She was a badass. She was doing her best to keep six boys in line during the early 70’s when kids were doing things that were literally out-ofthis-world. And she managed to somehow keep her finger on it. So while she was the boss, the kids could feel how she sincerely loved being around them, and she ran the house accordingly. We had cookouts and Gin-Rummy games. Softball tourneys in the backyard and bonfires. She let
my brothers play Led Zeppelin on full volume – when I’m sure she really wanted to listen to Charlie Rich – and she did her best to find the good qualities in every Zeppelin song. My mum is Nancy. And Nancy’s brand had, and still has, genuine juju. Kids came to her. They bought her whole program. They stuck around. They ordered repeat products. They referred friends. Why? Because she was the real deal. They were pickin’ up what she was puttin’ down. It was good juju, man.
A
llow me to take this analogy just a bit further, because we’re going to discuss this when we talk about building your brand. This was not an accident. My mum did not fall into being the kid whisperer. She worked at it every day. She never said, “You know kids, we won’t be having dinner tonight. I’m going to drink my pink wine from a box and put my feet up on the coffee table for a change. Make yourselves some fish sticks.” Never. She fried those pork chops and mashed those potatoes every single day. And more often than not, she did it for 15 of us. She also never said, “I’m trying something new tonight. It’s AsianEuro-fusion. I’ve got ginger-lemongrass fingerling potatoes and peppered pot roast in tiny rice envelopes.” Nope. She never said 18 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
that. Every day we showed up and got a home-cooked, southernstyle meal that made us belch, smile, sleep well, and think about coming back for more tomorrow. There was nary a kid who said, “I don’t like corn-on-the-cob with fresh butter.” Not a one. She was reliable. Consistent. Authentic. She was the brand the kids bought with the currency of their time. She was the region’s number one choice for dinner and a sleepover. Nancy owned the market, season after season. Nancy’s juju got around.
Did my mum set out to build a brand? She did not. She set out to keep her kids safe. To find a way to keep her eye on them and keep them healthy. And this, my friends, may be the very key to branding with juju: There must be a higher purpose. Juju is all about the share – all about creating good will and transforming the world, no matter how small the scope. And although Nancy did not call her juju a brand (nor did she call it juju), it wasn’t accidental or without some strategy. “The quickest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,” is just as effective for luring teens as it is for luring men. Nancy applied this adage during times of crisis. If my brothers disappeared the morning after the Deep Purple concert, she cried and wrung her hands, but she knew they would eventually head home for bacon and eggs. Once, when my oldest brother broke his leg, my mum cooked him spaghetti with meat sauce (we did not call it Bolognese) before leaving the house for the emergency room. Because emergency rooms take a long time, and long times on empty stomachs are less bearable. Julia Hook: Branding Your Juju •
19
Nancy’s higher purpose: Keep these kids close and safe. Nancy’s Juju: Love and deliciousness, dayin and day-out. Nancy’s core brand message? You can rely on Nancy for yum and fun. So, knowing what I know about Nancy’s brand, and what 25 years of branding for businesses large and small has taught me, I’d like to share with you Ten Essential Steps for Building a Brand from Juju. These steps are not about being slick and cool. They’re about being hot, delicious and reliable. Every time.
"Good juju transforms people and things, so you’ve got to know the reason for your juju. What are you trying to bring to the world?." 20 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
STEPS FOR BUILDING A BRAND FROM JUJU FIND YOUR JUJU. Figure out what you stand for, give off, or consistently and naturally do better than anyone else. ENSURE IT’S ABOVE AND BEYOND. This thing cannot simply be honesty or good service, which are required for all businesses. It must be something more. KNOW ITS HIGHER PURPOSE. Good juju transforms people and things, so you’ve got to know the reason for your juju. What are you trying to bring to the world? You can have juju without a purpose, but it’s a like a slinky without the stairs. It won’t travel far on its own. GIVE IT A NAME. Explain this concept thing in real words, succinct enough that people understand them. PAY SOME ATTENTION TO STYLE. There’s a lot of juju in the world. People must know and remember yours. It’s essential that it looks and feels distinctive. If it can also sound, smell or taste distinctive, then you’ve really hit the juju jackpot. TEACH IT. DON’T PREACH IT. Demonstrate and live this juju for everyone who works on your team and with your team. Don’t just talk about it. Emanate it. Radiate it. Spread it around. Lay it down. LET GO OF IT. You’ve got to let your people spread the juju. You can’t be stingy with it. Empower them. Encourage them to feel proud to share it. Your juju is their superpower. 22 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
TOUCH YOUR CUSTOMERS WITH IT. Build this juju into every place you bump into your customers: in person, on your website, on the phone, in your advertising and events, in the press, in social media. Leave it behind wherever you go. NEVER NEGOTIATE. This is your juju. It is your essence. Never sacrifice it. Take it off the table. It cannot be negotiated. USE IT TO MEASURE WHAT MATTERS. Good juju makes people feel a certain way. This leads to trusting relationships, which leads to action again and again. So that’s what you need to measure: How do people feel about what you’re giving off? And where does that lead them, and you? So there they are, my friends. The ten steps to branding your juju, your secret sauce, your superpower.
Y
ou can brand, or you can brand your juju. In the end, juju wins out. Because energy doesn’t die. It’s transferred, or transformed. And if your heads and your hearts are in the right places, your team can use your organisation’s juju to transfer good, and to transform the world.

A brand is about more than colours and icons and products and services. It’s about the way your organisation makes people feel. A good brand is about what your customers sense and experience every time they bump into you – in person, online, at a retail channel, in a private conversation at happy hour. It’s about what you give off. And it’s about what lingers … long after you’ve made the sale. Good branding is about juju. Juju is innate. It emanates, radiates. It colours things. We all have it. Every company’s got it, too. We all know what juju is: we just can’t always see it in ourselves. Sometimes we need a little help to put a finger on it – to wrap a brand and a message around the essence of it. And when we do … watch out. Teams rally around it, moments are shared within it, customers feel grateful for it, relationships are born from it, reputations are cultivated through it. Because the thing about juju is: good or bad, you leave a little bit behind wherever you go. A BRAND IS ABOUT THE WAY YOU MAKE PEOPLE FEEL. AND THAT SHOULD BE SOME GOOD JUJU, MAN. 24 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com

I used to wonder how to get great potential clients to join my email list. I mean, a few people would trickle onto my list, but I would talk with other business people with large email lists that were growing every day. That’s what I want for you. And now that I’ve figured out some of the secrets, I can spill the beans right here and now. In my humble opinion, most entrepreneurs don’t have enough optin forms. Having excellent, strategically placed opt-in forms can make all the difference for your business. Make sure you have various offers available and that your forms are easy to see and simple to complete. I love thinking of my opt-in forms as ‘irresistible offers,’ because that is exactly what they need to be. When someone comes upon your blog, they should get fired up and excited about what you are sharing with them. They will see your opt-in and think, ‘I absolutely must sign up for this offer’. That’s what I mean by an irresistible offer. It even makes me excited to think about the juicy content I’m offering. Your business is unique and that’s why I want you to promise you’ll experiment with your opt-in locations and styles. Too many people are afraid to try new things and just

see how they work. Track your analytics, check out how many visits you’re getting to a certain page and then discover how many visitors actually sign up for your list on that page. This is what we call conversions.
Depending on your business, here are some great places to put opt-ins: The bottom of a blog post. If a reader is enjoying the post you’ve written, that same reader is way more apt to sign up for something else you’re offering. Website homepage. Put an opt-in right there on your homepage where it’s easy to see and compelling. Some people use a ‘feature box’ for this purpose. A feature box is front and centre on your site and it lets visitors know exactly what your site is about. It also gives them a quick opportunity to receive more information by opting in. Website ‘about’ page. Analytics usually show that your ‘about’ page is one of the more popular places for visitors to go on your site. Therefore, it only makes sense to include a great looking opt-in opportunity right there on the page. The top of your sidebar. If you have a sidebar on your website, this is a great place to include an opt-in. Many websites are designed so the sidebar appears on lots of pages on your site, therefore your opt-in will appear even if your visitor lands on a random page within your site. 30 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
Pop-up Box. This is sometimes called a ‘lightbox’. I’m going to cut to the chase. I know a lot of people hate these things. They are timed to pop-up a certain number of seconds after you visit the site. Some people do click off the site as a result because they find the pop-up box annoying. But before you dismiss the idea, depending on your niche, a lot of people have found pop-up boxes to be wildly successful. This is the case especially if your opt-in is truly irresistible. It is definitely worth trying. If it doesn’t work for you, what have you lost? Your website footer. This is a place many people forget about. It can be great real estate. Think of it this way. If a visitor makes it all the way down to the footer of your site, they are probably interested, so I encourage you to experiment with an opt-in form in your footer. You’ll notice I don’t use all of these opportunities for opt-in locations. That’s because, just like you, my niche is specific. I use what has proven best for my business. Now you need to do the same .
Let me know of some other places you like to use opt-ins!

Late last year, as winter was approaching, I decided there was only one thing for it. It was time for me to go into my cave. That’s metaphorically speaking, of course. You see, as years go, 2014 was more challenging than most, both personally and professionally. By October, and although I seemed to be functioning, I was at a very low ebb. I was stuck and yearned for a way out. Yet I couldn’t see any escape. I was lost, bewildered and frankly, fed up. This sort of thing happens in all of our lives …Yes, coaches too!
Trusting in Nature This time, I thought I would do more than listen to my own advice. Nature can teach us so many lessons. And it was with this in mind that I decided to play with the idea of hibernation and restoration. Instead of struggling through as I would do normally, I stopped pretending. I stopped trying so hard. I stopped listening to the incessant voices chattering in my head. I stopped trying to have it all figured out. I allowed my natural instincts to guide me, and in their truest wisdom, they let me know what was needed. Clarity in Caves •
35
“I allowed my natural instincts to guide me, and in their truest wisdom, they let me know what was needed." I slowed down. I rested. I travelled. I spent a lot of time in the natural outdoors. I tended to my own needs, and to my development. I spent time with inspiring people, and especially those I love, and I started once more to see and feel appreciation for my life and the opportunities it holds. Eventually, amidst a new sense of calm, I began to hear my intuition speaking to me, more loudly and clearly than ever. This time, there was no mindless chatter. No ambiguity, no doubt, and no fear. With renewed energy, focus and confidence, I felt like ‘me’ again, and I was finally able to make choices that just felt natural, easy, and right.
Coming Home As of January 5th, I have now moved back to my home country after 16 years away, and I have re-connected with my life’s dream. This time, more fully and authentically than ever before. Sometimes, just as it is for the trees, plants and animals, the signs are there, screaming out to us that all we need is to ‘go away’ for a while, find calm, do our work, tend 36 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
to our needs and ‘re-enter’ when the timing feels right. We can then come back to ourselves. We re-discover who we are, and we remember what we’re really all about, and once again, we really are ‘home.’ This time, renewed, revitalised and ready to take our dreams into the world. Let me ask, where do you go to find your clarity? Do you have a 'cave'? Maybe you meditate. Walk in nature. Lie on a beach?
Sending you my warmest wishes until next time.

Mindful
Practise at Work

"…with mindfulness it’s less about the act itself and more about the experience of what you’re doing." When I started to learn about mindfulness, I was immediately drawn to it. Sure that’s because I’m a lefty liberal who is pink and fluffy, and I found that I struggled with it. This was mostly because my experience of meditation is different and I couldn’t make mindfulness fit. In the Sikh religion, meditation is done as a collective experience. Of course it can be done on your own, but the practice tends to be with a group of others. Mindfulness, then, for me was a
challenge. How could I embody this way of thinking and focus while being by myself? I’ve found that it’s in my day to day stuff and work practise that I’m more able to take on being mindful as opposed to sitting quietly. It tends to be in my interactions with others that I can open myself to being mindful in a way I may not do otherwise. Below are some further examples of how you can think about how mindfulness can be manifest in day to day work interactions.
Mindful Practise at Work •
39
Project work Often when we’re working on projects there are moments when we become personally stuck. It can be beneficial at these moments to take a break from the project, even if only for a few minutes, and cultivate mindfulness. This can be done by getting a glass of water, going for a walk, of even just breathing. Remember, with mindfulness it’s less about the act itself and more about the experience of what you’re doing. Taking the time to fully and wholly just experience that one thing. What does it feel like? What does it make you think? What’s happening to your body? Where are your thoughts being taken to? How can you focus just on the one thing? In doing this, what you’re enabling is for the body and mind to be occupied with just one thought. When you’ve had the time to do this, you’ll then be able to decide how to move forward with the project. Not necessarily immediately, but certainly with more options available to you as you’ve been able to separate yourself from it which gives space to think better on it.
Facilitation with groups As a facilitator, one of the many skills involved is encouraging the group to be inclusive with one another. That means needing to hear different people, be aware of the overall discussion, watch for people and their contributions, not forcing people to talk but creating an environment where they can, listening to tonality of voices, and being observant of body language. The role of the 40 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
facilitator in these situations is to help everyone be the best of themselves and contribute in ways that are useful and helpful to others. It’s also about your own thoughts, feelings and focus, and how you perceive these are being impacted or influenced by the group and how you can provide direction, instruction or guidance on moving forward.
Difficult conversations For many managers at work, they need to have difficult conversations at some point. When these need to be had, emotions are already flying high and it can be tough to ensure that the conversation will go well even with being well prepared. Being mindful in these situations enables the manager to be able to understand the fluctuation in their emotions as the conversation is being had and also in how the other person is responding. What that means is the manager should be able to respond in ways which are more useful to them and the other person to have a better conversation. These are just some examples of how I see mindfulness in practise may be easier to understand for some and allows for a different set of exploration on how to cultivate the practise‌

“He suffered for you. His passion was and is for you.”
I
watch, listen to, and read books from some of the most gifted Christian women who give speeches, teach sermons, and write about igniting our passions for the Kingdom of God. I think a common ground all of humanity has is the fact we deeply believe we serve a purpose on this earth. For Christians, our purpose is to make the name of Jesus great by obediently moving into action as we are sent, by our sending Saviour. Our purpose is surrender – to die to our flesh daily and to walk in the Spirit of love, truth, and righteousness. Our lives are filled with passion for things: family, career, hobbies, money, vacations, adventure, creativity, self expression, rights, liberties, global issues, God issues, and a multitude of other things that burn us from the inside and make us unable to be stagnant in this life. A passionate runner may spend hours training their body. A person passionate about orphans or sex trafficking may devote their entire existence to defending the defenceless. Passion •
47
Someone who is passionate about success may spend countless hours working late, working with money managers to handle their investments, and devoting every ounce of energy to working their way up a ladder of status and title. We all devote our lives to the things we are most passionate about.
W
e define passion as an emotion that is barely controllable; it’s an emotion that exceeds enthusiasm. In Greek, passion translates to the meaning “to suffer”. The suffering of Christ, found in the gospels, begins with the anointing of Jesus and ends on Golgotha where the Saviour of the world hung on a criminal’s cross and died for the redemption of humanity. I love, love, love that God chose to use a woman in the story of Jesus’ passion: “One of the Pharisees asked him (Jesus) over for a meal. He went to the Pharisee’s house and sat down at the dinner table. Just then, a woman of the village, the town harlot, having learned that Jesus was a guest in the home of the Pharisee, came with a bottle of very expensive perfume and stood at his feet, weeping, raining tears on his feet. Letting her hair down, she dried his feet, kissed them, and anointed them with the perfume." (Luke 7:36-38 MSG)
D
o you know that the name Christ is a Greek word for the Hebrew Messiah, and that the title Messiah means “the anointed one”? Before you become uber impressed with my Hebrew and Greek, let me assure you that what has been weighing heavy on my heart was birthed through study and only because of the Holy Spirit.

“Maybe she was worn out from laying her body out for men to use. Maybe she could feel it deep in her gut, that the only way to salvation was to surrender and fall at His feet.”
H
ow beautiful is the story of The Anointed One being anointed by this mystery woman? I read this passage as an incredible love story; one full of passion. This harlot, this untouchable, unworthy sinful woman saw something in Jesus. Maybe she had an intuition that something big was about to happen. Maybe God had called her there, to anoint her Saviour, and she was following in bold obedience. This perfume she lavished upon Jesus wasn’t the run of the mill stuff you can buy at a department store. This perfume was special,
sacred and she was sacrificing it by pouring it out. This woman was full of bravery as she went, uninvited and unwelcome to the home of the Pharisee. She went outside of her comfort zone just to see Christ. I am not certain as to why she was so emotional and raining down tears. Maybe it was because the filth of her own sin had built up inside her. Maybe she was worn out from laying her body out for men to use. Maybe she could feel it deep in her gut, that the only way to salvation was to surrender and fall at His feet.
As this scene plays out in my mind I picture a broken woman. I picture her coming humbly to His feet and just laying it all out before Him, as if to say “I am broken for you Jesus. Do you see this precious oil? You are the precious oil. I can feel it in my bones. Passion •
49
I know you are going away and I just needed to be with you and to feel you. There is something so special about you, Messiah. You don’t push me away from your presence. You are allowing me to sit before you and not just use some of my offering, but all that I have to offer you willingly accept. This jar of perfume is broken and poured for you. I just needed to touch you, to be near you. You see me, in all of my sin and you welcome me.”
I
don’t know about this unknown woman’s physical state, but emotionally she seems to be suffering. It was this suffering that gave her passion for Jesus. She needed Jesus whose whole aroma is love. The characteristic of genuine love is that it is freely given and the intensity of love is measured by the amount of suffering it bears. Jesus suffered out of love for the harlot. He suffered out of love for the woman at the well. He suffered for the religious and rebellious. He suffered for the outcast. He suffered for the sick and broken.
He suffered for you. His passion was and is for you. It wasn’t the nails that held Christ to the cross. It was you. It was me. It was His love. What Christ did for us at Golgotha was the greatest example of passion humanity would ever know. After studying through this and wrestling with passion, I can’t help but think about the cries of my heart as I have asked for clarity and wisdom for the passions of my heart to be used for His glory. 50 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
And yet what I have been asking for, without knowing, is for the suffering of my heart to be used for His glory. Passion comes with pain. Passion comes with a cost. He laid down His life for us – and we are called to lay our lives down for the purpose of His will.
What could a generation of sold out, surrendered, passionate women do for the kingdom and glory of Jesus Christ? What would happen if we poured out ourselves fully at His feet? What would our lives look like? Our marriages? Our relationships? Our children?
T
hese thoughts race through my mind and keep me awake some nights. There is about to be a revival. I am literally crying as I write this, excited at the thought of what God could do in us and with us if we would only surrender. Precious friends who journey with me through the ramblings of my heart: He is asking for us to lay it all down and move to action with passion filled hearts.

"But don’t let the illusion of blemish-free, smooth, peachy skin fool you – smooth, plump skin doesn’t necessarily equate to healthy skin." Bright, clear skin is often an indication of good overall health. Eating a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and making healthful lifestyle choices all promote beautiful skin on the outside, and a healthy body on the inside. However, advancements in medical aesthetics, cosmetic dermatology, and ingredient technology now offer short cuts to skin that is physically clearer, with fewer lines, and more even texture and pigmentation. We now see people looking ten years younger overnight due to cosmetic treatments, have “miracle” ingredients that claim to clear up acne within days, and “brightening” serums to get rid of dark spots. These treatments can certainly seem attractive, especially for someone who’s been Skincare: Fact vs Fiction •

living with a skin condition for a long period of time. But don’t let the illusion of blemish-free, smooth, peachy skin fool you –smooth, plump skin doesn’t necessarily equate to healthy skin. While many of these treatments and products are effective, they may not be good for the actual physiology of the skin—in fact, some products and treatments can cause permanent damage. Following are the top 5 myths and realities about skin health.
Myth no.1 Squeaky clean skin is healthy skin. Many people believe that they aren’t removing excess oil and debris from the pores unless they use lathering or foaming cleansers and drying toners.
Reality Cleansers that foam or lather likely contain harsh detergents like sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate (SLS/ SLES). Toners that leave the skin feeling dry and tight often contain high amounts of alcohol. SLS and SLES and alcohol, along with other chemical detergents and foaming agents do remove dirt, but they also remove the skin’s protective lipid barrier which is necessary for protecting against the elements and retaining the skin’s moisture, in addition to other functions. When this barrier is stripped, the skin is more susceptible to free radical damage from the environment, different types of infections, and dehydration—any of which can have adverse effects on the immune system and speed up the skin’s aging process. 58 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
Myth no.2 Skincare products from a spa or doctor’s office are always good for the skin.
Reality While professional and medical skincare products do sometimes contain higher concentrations of higher quality ingredients than drug and department store products, more isn’t always better. It’s always important to get the best quality ingredients available; but super-high concentrations of active ingredients—even seemingly beneficial ingredients like Vitamin A or C or alpha hydroxy acids— can irritate the skin, increase its sensitivity to the sun’s rays, and disrupt its barrier function.
“A higher SPF does not mean better protection or that you can stay out in the sun without reapplying for longer periods of time.” Skincare: Fact vs Fiction •
59
Myth 3 Higher SPFs mean better protection from the sun’s damaging rays.
Reality A higher SPF does not mean better protection or that you can stay out in the sun without reapplying for longer periods of time. If this was truly the case, then skin cancer wouldn’t be as prevalent as it is now. It just means more chemicals, which can do more damage than good since most of the chemicals used in common sunscreens (such as oxybenzone) have been shown to cause toxic effects to the body. According to Kabana Skin Care, “SPF 15 equates to 93.3% UV absorption, which means by applying such a product 93.3% of the UV your skin would otherwise be absorbing is getting absorbed by the product. Doubling the SPF value to 30 provides 96.7% UV absorption, or only 3.4% more UV protection.” It’s best to use a product with a SPF of 15 to 30 and reapply about every two hours; or right after getting out of the pool, sweating, or towelling off after your workout.
Myth no.4 Drinking alcohol has no effect on skin. 60 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
Reality Getting flushed cheeks, neck, or ears after having a few drinks may seem like a temporary inconvenience for some. However, drinking too much alcohol (especially on a regular basis) can cause capillaries near the skin’s surface to dilate, and they can remain visibly dilated permanently. This is commonly referred to as “broken capillaries.” Too much alcohol also takes a huge toll on the liver, and liver toxicity is now suspected to contribute to the development of melasma (a mask-like pattern of hyperpigmentation or dark spots which can be permanent), acne, rosacea, and other conditions.
Myth no.5 Exfoliating regularly is necessary for healthy skin. People seem to be obsessed with exfoliation these days. At-home scrubs, spinning facial brushes, alpha hydroxy acid peels and microdermabrasion treatments have rapidly grown in popularity because people are convinced that they have to constantly slough off the old, dead skin so the vibrant, youthful skin cells underneath can come to the surface.
Reality The stratum corneum (the outermost “dead” layer of the epidermis) is there for a reason. It protects the layers underneath that house cells that produce skin pigment, cells that boost immunity, and cells Skincare: Fact vs Fiction •
61
that produce the proteins of youth, collagen and elastin. Skin cells are produced in these deeper layers and gradually flatten and rise to the surface in due time when the “old” ones shed on their own. Forcing the cell turnover rate to speed up brings the cells to the surface before they are ready, which may cause them to form incorrectly or become permanently damaged. This also causes unnecessary inflammation to the cells in the deeper layers of the skin which may lead to DNA damage and dermal thinning—both of which reduce immunity and speed up the aging process of the skin.

“I’m trying to turn anything I have to do … into play. I remind myself as often as I can that the whole point is to have fun!”
TANIS
Frame is a science-geek, soul-sister, thrivecatalyst, play-evangelist, world champion, and mum to two fierce young girls. She is also the powHERhouse behind the Decide to Thrive Revolution – inspiring women to claim the courage to live their lives in full colour. Tanis is charmingly obsessive about discovering the science and soul behind what cultivates thriving in our lives and what gets in the way. She shares insights and wisdom from leading edge science, ancient and modern wisdom traditions, and thriving women, and translates them into ridiculously simple tools that radically transform the way you live. I was fortunate enough to recently attend Tanis’ inaugural ‘Mamma Gone Coastal‘ retreat, and also to have the opportunity to sit down with Tanis and dig a little deeper into what it’s all about for her.
Describe your Mission. I’m on a mission to get women and their families thriving – to get them out of survival mode where life is relentlessly happening to them – and create the life they truly yearn for. Because every woman deserves to shine … and it’s a hell of a lot more fun than survival mode! Tanis Frame: Decide to Thrive Revolution •

Describe how you stay PowHERful and on the top of your game. I play every day, in some shape or form, and I’m trying to turn anything I have to do … into play. I remind myself as often as I can that the whole point is to have fun!
"For me, success is to know who I truly am, what I’m uniquely here to be and do…"
Describe what success looks like. I love that you ask this – defining this for ourselves is the key to creating it! For me, success is to know who I truly am, what I’m uniquely here to be and do, then to be that with great love and a whole lot’ta fun and laughter, while sharing the journey with people I love. Yeah, that’s success to me.
Describe your success strategy in one sentence. Tanis Frame: Decide to Thrive Revolution •
77
Decide to thrive! The longer version would be my ‘playground rules’, which I’d never thought of as a success strategy, but that’s exactly what it is.
One thing that you feel has been most pivotal or useful thus far in your career? Being genuinely curious, and having the courage to follow wherever that took me.
Describe how you love to work with women. What’s your vehicle? What is the experience that you are hoping to create for the women that you work with? I love to work with great passion and humour – this work is deep, but I’m not convinced we’re really serving ourselves by taking things too seriously. Laughter is powHERful stuff! Whether I’m doing a speaking gig, PLAYshop, retreat or online program – I think of myself as an instigator and catalyst – I create opportunities for pause, play and reflection … really they do all the good work! There’s a magical synergy that emerges when you gather a group of women who individually and collectively are determined to thrive deeply in their lives, I’m just honoured to be along for the ride! 78 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
Best advice you ever received. Questions vs. advice. I firmly believe we have our own best answers and advice, so I’m all about asking really good questions. Two of the best questions I’ve been asked that were total gamechangers for me were:
What would you do if you didn’t have to tell anyone what you did for a living? That made me realise who I’d been living my life for … and it hadn’t been me!
79
How good can you handle it? – That one put me face-to-face with my own upper limit challenge. I wasn’t convinced that I deserved it all that good … so I was carefully engineering staying small or struggling somewhere in my life. I’ve come to believe that our lives are going to be as good as we can handle it!
What’s your favourite topic to speak on? It sounds like you are quite a storyteller! Do you have a speaking experience or memory you’d like to share? I love to riff on how transforming our relationship with ourselves can radically transform not only how we get to experience our lives, but also transforms how we show up in the world and the impact we have. Radical selfcare can become the greatest love affair of our lives, and that I believe it is the central catalyst to being truly powHERful in our lives and in the world. Last Fall, I had one of my favourite speaking experiences at Leah Goard’s Soul and Strategy Retreat – I was honoured to speak at the evening of Insight and Inspiration, but about an hour before the talk I threw out my plan and started crafting a new speech …not something I 80 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
would necessarily advise but in this case it turned out shockingly well! I shared my story of surfing … not because I’m a good surfer – far from it – but because surfing has taught me a whole lot about myself and about how to thrive in life. How to chose the right wave and to ride it with power and grace, and most of all, how to have the courage to paddle back out, even when it scares the crap out of me! That also happened to be the day the Decide to Thrive Revolution was launched in my heart … memorable day for sure, starting a revolution and all!
We are currently planning our upcoming PowHERtalks Speaker Series for women. What would be your top three tips for a powHERful presentation and to courageous approach public speaking? I am so thrilled about PowHERtalks and can’t wait to be a part of it! Be unapologetically you. Share your story with your whole heart, and finally…

huge wave of electromagnetic energy is prophesied to hit the earth in September 2015, and is being referred to as 'Wave X'. This is big news for the human race, many of us already feel the effect of the lunar cycle and solar flares as well as other planetary occurrences – but this one is a biggie. Ever since the year 2012 the earth has been subject to energy shifts that have been both disruptive and transformational, and if you look back at your own life in this time-frame you are likely to see that there have been big changes for you on a personal level, and in the lives of those around you too. The big shake up is happening, the shedding of our outer layers, and those of us walking a spiritual path have sent out a message to the universe that we want to accelerate and expand our consciousness. It has not been easy. Growing pains are evident in our lives and relationships and in the world around us as we limp into the new age like wounded souls in some instances, but now is the time when we need to have faith more than ever that the cosmic tide is turning. Do you feel on the verge of something amazing? Do you feel the anticipation building?
COSMIC WAVE SURVIVAL GUIDE Those of us that are energy sensitive have been experiencing old wounds surfacing to be healed and overwhelming emotions that seem to come out of no-where. We are being pushed to heal this old stuff and in some cases it has been buried so deep within our subconscious, that the only way to bring it to our attention is to pull off the emotional band aid and let the feelings flow. "Step into your power. We are being called now to discover and use our gifts for our own benefit and the greater good of humanity." Old stuff that does not serve you cannot stay buried, it remains in your vibrational escrow and will attract more of the same, and you are worthy of a better experience. Have courage and shine your light on your darkness, you are perfect in your human imperfection as are we all, and we are all here to do the same work – on ourselves.
If you are reading this it is likely that you are one of the awakened ones that have been accelerated through lessons on earth and will cope with this big cosmic push quite well. There are many that are in resistance or duality that will not fair that way, but they are on their own journey and this is to be honoured by us all.
Imagine it this way – a huge cosmic wave that is of higher vibrational light energy that will illuminate your darkness and wash you clean of patterns that do not serve you.
THAT SOUNDS GOOD DOESN’T IT? AND IT WILL BE IF WE ARE READY. 92 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
Make way for your authentic self, honour this part of you and know that anything fake, obligatory or compromised will struggle at this time. If aspects of this come up, go within and ask your higher self to assist you to release control and self- sabotage.
Step into your power. We are being called now to discover and use our gifts for our own benefit and the greater good of humanity. There is no other soul like you in the galaxy, therefore what you bring is totally unique. Other souls are waiting for what you do, get on and do it. Keep out of drama, distance yourself from those in drama as best you can. The gap will get wider as you evolve more and you can still have compassion for these people, but do not allow yourself to get stuck. Be open to your multi-dimensional self. As the wave comes we will have more access to the twelve dimensions as crystalline strands of DNA
are activated. You may see and feel aspects of yourself in other time space realities, this is expected and normal and do not be afraid. This is to facilitate you healing soul extensions and reclaiming stuck fragments of yourself. Know that what is right for you is happening in terms of transformation. As you shed old layers your light quotient will increase and you may have to change what you eat and drink and who you hang out with. We are all going through a version of this, you are not strange, you are evolving. The earth and humanity are changing for the better and you are a key part of that, we are all connected.
Keep going lightworker, we need you.

It's All Good
By Cherie DeBurger 100 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
Usually anything new is fun and exciting but over time, no matter how badly you try to resist the inevitable, the feeling starts to wane. When
a teenager gets their license to drive they want to drive all the time and for any reason. Any errand that needs to be done with the car brings them begging for the opportunity to do it for you. After dealing with enough traffic jams, other crazy drivers, engine problems and the uncanny ability to hit each and every red light driving soon loses its thrill.
This human fickleness also includes the beloved sanctity of marriage. Just like many other things, over the years,(sometimes it only takes a few months) the "newness" wears off. It’s not difficult to tell which couples have only just dreamily floated down the long white flowered aisle of wedding bliss and which couples have been married so long that they don't remember the date they declared their love let alone any type of bliss they once shared. For example newlywed husbands can be found waiting patiently for their wives to get ready when they have made plans and are going out on the town for the evening. Husbands with more years under their belts think having hot dogs in the back yard is considered going out because it's not in the house. If he can be successfully

bribed to go for drinks and dancing instead for waiting patiently he will sit in the car and lay on the horn, all the while threatening to leave without her if she doesn't hurry up.
New
husbands thoughtfully present their bride with her favourite flowers and expensive jewellery when a wedding anniversary comes around. Seasoned husbands are unaware of the date until they get home where they quickly make an excuse to run out to the store after their wife reminds them what day it is.
New husbands try to keep bodily functions disguised or hidden. Seasoned husbands will blame whatever child is closest if he breaks wind. It's not beyond him to blame the family pet if a child isn't handy. Seasoned husbands will declare their exit from the bathroom with a public service announcement while waving their hands saying, “You don’t want to go in there for at least an hour!” New husbands spend their days off doing hanging around the house and doing odd jobs from their “honey do” list. Seasoned husbands not only avoid the list but the house altogether and spend the day at the golf course or watching the game with the boys.
Now
don't get me wrong, I am not saying that women don’t fall into these categories as well. We are not above being lulled into the comfort zone of contentment. Women also work very hard at the beginning of a relationship to look great all the time, have gourmet meals on the table and make believe that being sweet 102 • Hat Trick Magazine • hattrickstrategies.com
“…seasoned wives are ahead of the game if what they are wearing has no rips or holes and the elastic still works.” comes effortlessly. As time goes on things begin to change or relax and fantasy gives way to reality. New wives get up early to fix themselves up, apply a little makeup and brush their teeth. They are singing sweetly in the kitchen brewing coffee and getting breakfast ready when their husbands get up. Seasoned wives will be staggering around the kitchen with their hair all matted and sticking up straight, no make-up, unmatching pyjamas, and a torn robe.
New
wives take special care to shave their legs and under their arms daily to keep their body soft and smooth for their husband's touch. Some even go the extra mile with bikini waxes, eyebrow shaping and matching underwear and bras. Seasoned wives can almost braid the hair on their legs by the time spring arrives and then shave in the summer only when they will be wearing a dress or shorts. The pain of waxing anything is only a memory and as for matching undergarments seasoned wives are ahead of the game if what they are wearing has no rips or holes and the elastic still works. New wives have three course meals cooked and on the table waiting for their husbands when they get home from work. Wineglasses filled and some music on maybe even a candle or two. take-out menus waiting on the table when their husbands get home. When he asks how long until dinner her answer is "however long it takes the delivery man to get here".
New
wives always have the house clean and tidy, carpets vacuumed, floors mopped. Things are picked up and put in their place. Scented wax warming so the whole house smells like cinnamon buns. Seasoned wives tell people to watch their step as they enter the house and need to clean a spoon out of the dishwasher for stirring the coffee. The dust and cobwebs that are noticed are declared as early decorations for Halloween.
So as the years go by and our true personalities emerge we find that the person we are sharing our life with is less than perfect, but before you complain remember they have to live their life with someone who is not perfect either ‌ you.
